PHS principal to step down Will be reassigned within District 88

By LYLE R. ROLFE news@kendallcountynow.com Plano High School principal Eric Benson has resigned effective with the end of the current school year this spring, Superintendent Dr. Hector Garcia announced at a special board meeting Monday night.

Benson’s letter of resignation was accepted by the four board members who were present: board president Tim Campbell, Paul Heller, Mike Jernigan and Estela Martinez.

Garcia said the administration made the recommendation for Benson to step down, but he declined to elaborate. He said Benson will continue to serve as principal and then be reassigned to a new position for the 2017-18 school year. Garcia said Benson’s new position has not yet been determined.

Garcia said he does not expect to create an additional position for Ben-

son. He added that he could not say at this time whether Benson would continue to be a member of the administrative staff in his new position.

In a memo, Garcia read to the board he explained, “...we recognize Mr. Benson’s efforts over the last six years. We look forward to the future of Plano High School as Mr. Benson shifts to a new position for the 2017-18 school year. Mr. Benson will continue to support Eric Benson our goals and the work that has been the staple of our progress. The search for a new principal will begin immediately.”

In a letter that was to be sent to parents, Garcia said of Benson, “He will continue with his responsibilities through the remainder of the school year. Day-to-day operations, activities, or school priorities will not be interrupted.”

He said they planned to post the position on Feb. 8 and said they would advertise statewide for applicants to fill the vacancy. Staff members also will be invited to apply.

“Parents will have an opportunity to share their perspective and desired characteristics for the new principal through a parent focus group and the interview process. We have established the following tentative timeline for the search,” Garcia said.

Focus groups will meet Feb. 13-17.

Committee interviews will be held with prospective candidates March 1315, he added.

When asked whether the committee will present its recommendation to him or the board, Garcia said they will have a process in which teachers, parents and administrators share their feedback, and other factors that will be weighed before making a final recommendation.

The interviewing committee is expected to include teachers, administrators and parents. He could not say how many people will be asked to serve but added that he does not expect to limit the size of the group.

Garcia said they expect to present a recommendation for a new principal to the board for approval at the March 20 board meeting. The new principal would start work on July 1.

ROLFE news@kendallcountynow.com Growth in enrollment figures for Plano School District 88, as of Jan. 1, were small according to a report given to board members recently by Superintendent Dr. Hector Garcia. He said they are showing an increase of 23 students in the district, going from 2,393 at the start of the school year last fall to 2,416 on Jan. 1.

The numbers were about what he expected for the year, so he does not expect much of a change for the remainder of the 2017-18 school year.

He said the high school saw an increase in the number of seniors this year, going from 152 to 185 on Jan. 1, but they expect to see that number to be more consistent next year.

Garcia said there were no major

changes in the number of students moving from one grade to the next in any of the schools, so there will be no need to increase any classrooms.

The report showed an increase in the number of preschool students, going from 108 to 127. But he noted that the preschool number is very difficult to predict because of many variables, including special needs students.

“Therefore, I would not place a great deal of value in our projections of 127,” he said. He added that they would have more solid numbers before school opens for the 2017-18 year.

The biggest increase for one school between Sept. 20, 2016, when the official count for this school year was made, and Jan. 1, is 23 students at PH Miller School. It increased to 452 from 429.

The high school showed a decrease of 11 students this year, which Garcia

attributed to a large number of students transferring. “We expect this number to return to normal,” he said.

Emily G. Johns School also showed a decrease of four students, but he said they do not see decreases as a trend.

Garcia said some new town­ homes are being built behind Johns so district officials are working to predict the number of new students they think will attend the school.

“Due to the limited number of new homes, I don’t predict a large number, but we will monitor the situation carefully,” he said.

“However, if Johns does have an increase in students next year, it will not cause a problem because they have plenty of classroom space available,” he added.

Garcia said they could see an increase of about 35 students in the district next year, but they will be scattered throughout the grade levels and schools so he does not see a problem in terms of staff or facilities at any grade level or building.

The second floor was a community center, where shows by traveling troupes, lectures, recitals, high school graduations, political rallies, temperance meetings and church gatherings were held.

Since the initial investigation in January 2016, the MGS has held four guided paranormal investigations open to the public at the opera house.

On Jan. 28, 11 of the group’s 16 members led the society’s fifth guided investigation for 30 members of the public.

“We hosted this event and other public investigations to introduce people to what we do,” Lemire said.

“We want people to get involved, learn about our equipment and have a good experience.”

Lemire started MGS in 2010. Since its founding, the MGS has traveled across the country to investigate public locations, businesses and private residences. For some of the locations that are farther away, the group spends the night or even a few days in the building while they investigate.

“I love being in a goal-oriented team environment,” Buchanan said. “Many of us have a love of history and historical places. There are a few locations that we visit regularly. The events are fun, but we use scientific methods in our investigations to both disprove and prove if anything is out there. I am both a believer and a skeptic, but it’s hard not to believe.”

Some examples of phenomena the MGS has reported and can’t explain include seeing spheres of light in dark rooms, having chairs pushed over and hearing mysterious noises such as whispers, screams and whistling.

Tammy Hawke of Hinckley, who has been with the MGS for more than five years, said she had her first paranormal experience after having a nightmare as a child.

“I remember waking up from a horrible nightmare, and there was an old lady sitting at the foot of my bed,” Hawke said. “She told me, ‘It’s OK, honey, go back to sleep.’ That’s when I realized that ghosts were real. I work for Fermilab. I believe very strongly in using science to debunk what we

see. However, some things can’t be explained by science.”

To try to debunk phenomena, the group uses electromagnetic field sensors, REM-pods with temperature detection, video cameras with night vision capabilities and audio recorders.

They also use a converted AM/FM radio to generate white noise, hoping to capture electronic voice phenomena, or EVPs. Setting up and taking down the equipment and wires is the most time-consuming task of investigations.

Reviewing the collected video, audio and data can take two weeks or longer.

“When we investigate, we ask the spirits or entities questions and record audio to see if there are any EVPs,” said Joseph Lemire, lead investigator and Michelle’s husband. “Humans can usually only hear around decibels 20 Hertz and louder. Dogs and electronics can pick up the lower decibels.

But sometimes, our technology can’t explain what we hear or see. Most of us have theories about what they are, though.”

When the group was investigating the Tinker Swiss Cottage in Rockford, Hawke had a direct response when she asked aloud, “Can you say my name?”

“Right now, we don’t know what they are or why we can see or hear these things,” Hawke said. “Maybe they are from another dimension or are souls or energy left behind when a person passes on. Some people call them ghosts, but we use the terms spirits or entities. We have also witnessed shadow figures, dark shadows with no features.”

SANDWICH – Chris Roe believes in the paranormal. She has heard tales of real-life experiences and has witnessed firsthand what she describes as “things not quite what they appear to be.”

Roe is the executive director at the Sandwich Opera House, 140 E. Railroad St. in Sandwich. After having one or two odd experiences at work, she decided she would try to determine what was happening.

But instead of calling the Ghostbusters, she invited members of the Midwest Ghost Society, which is based in Plano, to the opera house to conduct a private investigation.

“Once, as cleanup for an event was ending, I was told that the lights in the basement were on,” Roe said. “I knew nobody had been down there because the door was locked. When I went downstairs, the lights were on. I don’t know how that happened.

“Also – this was years ago – but the opera house had a problem with flickering lights. As the maintenance man was fixing the problem, he unplugged the lights. They were still flickering,” she said.

Others have reported of unnatural phenomena occurring in the building, including random drops in temperature and people saying they can feel an aura. Michelle Lemire, founder of the MGS, said that during the private investigation, audio recorders captured voices, including a young child’s voice, that could not be explained.

At least one funeral service was held in the opera house, that of Sandwich Mayor Julius M. Hummel in 1930.

Then-mayor Hummel had commissioned the building of the Sandwich City Hall and Opera House, which was completed in 1878.

When first built, the building housed all the functions of city government, including city offices, the police department, a jail and the fire department.

School forums gave info on difficult topics School District 308 and Yorkville School District 115 have hosted special forums over the past two weeks to present information on important, yet extremely difficult topics affecting today’s students and parents.

A program on youth suicide and depression was presented by Northbrook-based Elyssa’s Mission on Jan. 26 at Yorkville Middle School. School officials noted that program was especially important due to the loss of a YMS student to suicide last October.

Katie Baker, program director with Elyssa’s Mission, said the organization uses the S.O.S. or “Signs of Suicide” national program when they teach suicide prevention and they will be bringing the program to eighth-grade classrooms at Yorkville Middle School later this spring.

Over at Oswego High School, sexual assault, sex-

ual harassment and social media use by teens were among the topics addressed Jan. 30 by representatives from a social service agency (Mutual Ground), a licensed clinical psychologist, and the district’s two high school resource officers from the Oswego Police Department.

Rhonda Annala, Mutual Ground’s prevention education coordinator, said educators from Mutual Ground give age-appropriate prevention education to students in kindergarten through 12th grade. Annala noted that sexual abuse crosses all demographic boundaries. “It doesn’t matter how much money you make, it doesn’t matter what color your skin is, where you go to church. None of that matters. It crosses every single solitary boundary,” she said.

Dr. Lorna London, a psychologist based in Naperville, suggested parents should keep an eye on their

kids’ social media presence, and let them know that they are protecting them as parents. Perhaps even more importantly, London said parents should model good behavior themselves when they are online.

Unfortunately – but not surprisingly in today’s hectic world of working parents – both forums were sparsely attended. Despite the light turnout, the school districts should be commended for hosting the forums and attempting to inform parents and the community at large about how they are helping students deal with these extremely difficult issues.

From our perspective, the overriding message from both forums is that parents should strive every day to be fully engaged and involved in their children’s lives, and if that is not enough they should not hesitate to reach out to school officials for help and/or a referral.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Can’t get over it

To the Editor: The left just can’t get over the election results. Trump’s cabinet choices are stalled by Democrats despite the fact that the up and down vote will approve all of them.

Immigration was a keynote issue during the campaign. Trump is following through and the left is upset. They want everyone who enters the country to be able to stay. Really? Any goof or terrorist can enter, set up shop and do whatever mischief they desire. Doesn’t the left understand that you cannot have a country if you don’t have an enforceable border?

Democrats, the election is over.

Hollywood is irrelevant. The Russians did not rig the election. Hillary was a poor candidate who thought she had it won and didn’t campaign to the finish line.

She screwed up. I hated that Obama won

twice. I accepted the results and moved on. I guess when you’re a Democrat, if you don’t think and feel their way you are wrong and should be ostracized.

I suspect that most of us really would like to believe that race doesn’t matter as much as it used to. And in some ways, that’s a fair statement.

Until Jan. 20, a black man sat in the Oval Office in the White House, a black man has been chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, two black women in both Republican and Democratic administrations have served as National Security Advisors, and we’ve become used to seeing all manner of black celebrities, from sports heroes to TV stars.

But the legacy of slavery and the pernicious effects of Jim Crow still persist, as we see in those all-too-frequent headlines.

On the positive side, it’s been a while since we had our last major race riot. The most recent disturbances, with residents of black neighborhoods rioting, were caused by real and perceived unfairness, bias and prejudice in the justice system.

In fact, I suspect many of us tend to think of riots concerning race and racial issues as relatively recent things. The ones that stick in the minds of most of us Baby Boomers, for instance, are those that occurred after the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King in the late 1960s, during which large portions of several major cities were destroyed.

But race riots have a much longer and more complex and violent history.

Most all of those earlier riots, including those in New York City and Chicago during the Civil War, involved whites attacking blacks.

One of the most violent race riots in U.S. history happened here in Illinois in East St. Louis in 1917. At least 50 persons were killed (the actual toll was probably much higher) and 240 people were reported injured. Damage was set at $1,400,000 ($26 million in 2016 dollars).

At first, they did not bother us (we watched from the basement window), they remarked that ‘white people live in that house, that is not a nigger house.’ Later, someone must have tipped them that it was a ‘nigger’ house, because, after leaving us for about 20 min. they returned and started shooting in the house, throwing bricks and yelling like mad ‘kill the nigger, burn that house.’

Farm-to-table restaurant coming to Yorkville

By TONY SCOTT tscott@kendallcountynow.com The owners of Crusade Burger Bar are planning to open their next project on that same block of Bridge Street in downtown Yorkville sometime this spring.

1836 Drink Lab & Provisions is set to locate in the former Cobblestone Bakery & Bistro space at 101 W. Van Emmon St., with an opening planned for sometime in April.

Dale Lewis, owner/partner of the restaurant, said it would be a farmto-table concept restaurant similar to Sovereign restaurant in Plainfield, of which he is also owner/partner.

“1836 will have a similar style of menu,” he said. “It’s going to be locally-sourced products, no freezer, no microwave, a chef-driven menu, prepped daily. It will be just good old American comfort food, slightly elevated. And we’re going to focus on wine and cocktails.”

The restaurant will offer smallbatch spirits and wines made in the United States, he said.

Lewis said there will be changes to the building’s interior from when it was Cobblestone. He said there were five different entrances to the building,

Lewis said the interior of the main dining area will be changed to make it “more of our style.”

“It will be more like 1920s, ‘30s Gothic-type atmosphere, a little darker but not too sinister,” he said. “And we’re going to redo the bar and it will have a ton of display space for all the wines and whiskeys we’re going to be housing.”

Lewis said new high-back leather booths will be added to the dining room area.

The former Mongolian 211 and Bridge Street Cafe space will be broken up into two spaces, and part of it will be used as a workspace for meat processing. He said the meat processing for the restaurants has been in high demand.

Lewis said Crusade Burger Bar, down the block at 209 S. Bridge St., is “killing it.”

“Yorkville’s been good to us with that store,” he said. “It’s done an amazing job. Revenues are solid, staff is solid, you couldn’t ask for a better environment.”

Plano man gets 8 years in prison PLANO RECORD A Plano man has been sentenced to eight years in state prison for selling cocaine to undercover police officers, Kendall County State’s Attorney Eric Weis recently announced.

Kendall County Judge Timothy J. McCann sentenced Arturo Pulido, 52, of the 300 block of Prairie Street, Plano, to eight years in the Illinois Department of Corrections for unlawful delivery of a controlled substance.

A Kendall County jury found Pulido guilty of multiple drug offenses last November, Weis said, and he has remained in custody since the jury trial.

According to Weis, the sentencing range for Pulido’s actions ranged from six to 30 years. The jury trial consist-

ed of testimony mainly from members of the Kendall County Cooperative Police Assistance Team, who purchased cocaine from Pulido on three separate occasions.

Pulido was arrested in March 2015 after a search warrant was conducted at his residence, where an additional 50 grams of coArturo Pulido caine was found.

Pulido’s attorney, Domingo Vargas of Blue Island, argued that his client had been entrapped by the police into dealing cocaine.

Weis, who tried the case along with Assistant State’s Attorney Frank Gorup, said, “The jury saw through

Pulido’s attempt at painting our officers as overzealous. Pulido delivered cocaine to an undercover police officer on three separate occasions and had a large amount of additional cocaine in his home. That is not something that an entrapped person would do, but it is something a drug dealer does all too often.”

Weis complimented the Kendall County Police Assistance Team on using their resources to target drug dealers operating in the Kendall County area.

“These officers go where the evidence takes them, and if they learn that an individual is a drug dealer, they are going to gather the evidence needed to bring the drug dealer to justice,” Weis said.

Police said unknown subjects fired shots from a firearm during the incident.

Anyone with information on this or other crimes is urged to call Kendall County Crime Stoppers at 630-553-5999. Callers remain anonymous and are eligible for a reward of up to $1,000 for information leading to the arrest of the offenders.

Adams, 28, of the 4000 block of Hoffman Street, Plano, for driving under the influence of alcohol, leaving the scene of an accident, reckless driving and improper lane usage following a crash Feb. 1 at 3:02 a.m. on Route 34 at Waubonsee Drive.

Police said Adams lost control of his vehicle and it left the roadway, ending up on Waubonsee Community College property. Police said Adams fled the vehicle after the crash but was later located in the area of Boyer Lane and Hoffman Street.

Woman charged in fatal overdose of Oswego man

By JOHN ETHEREDGE jetheredge@shawmedia.com The Kendall County State’s Attorney’s Office has charged an Aurora resident, Stevi Myerscough, 29, with drug-induced homicide, a Class X felony, in connection with the death of an Oswego man last summer.

According to the Kendall County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were dispatched to a residence in the 0-50 block of West Anchor Drive in Oswego Township Aug. 24 on a report of an unresponsive man who was later identified as Chester Secor, 44, of Oswego.

Police said Secor was pronounced dead at the scene and an autopsy later

determined that his death was due to a heroin overdose.

While investigating the incident, police said they determined that Myerscough, an acquaintance of Secor, had provided him with the fatal dose of heroin.

Warrant arrest County sheriff’s deputies arrested Laura Ashley Tinsley, 21, of the 100 block of Beauwick Road, Boulder Hill, at her residence while responding to a reported domestic situation Feb. 6 at 10:41 a.m. Police said Tinsley was taken into custody after they determined she was wanted on a warrant for failure to appear in court on a prior charge of child endangerment.

Motorist transported to hospital A Sandwich resident, Wade Preston Johnston, 56, of the 0-100 block of Country Side Estates, was taken to an area hospital as a precautionary measure after the vehicle he was driving was involved in an accident in the 12000 block of Fox Road in Fox Township Feb. 1 at 5 p.m., according to the county sheriff’s office. Police said Johnston was driving westbound on Fox Road when his vision became obstructed by the sun. He drove through the intersection of Fox Road and West High Point Road and struck a pine tree, police said.

DUI charge in crash Two motorists received non-life-threatening injuries in a head-on crash on Ridge Road south of Wheeler Road in NaAuSay Township Feb. 5 at 10:37 p.m., according to the county sheriff’s office. Police identified the injured as Margaret M. Szczepanik, 38, of the 5400 block of South Komensky Avenue, Chicago, and Quovadis Nabor, 51, of the 3000 block of West Evergreen Street, Chicago. Both drivers were transported to Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center in Joliet.

Police said their investigation determined that Szczepanik was traveling northbound in the southbound lane of Ridge Road at the time of the crash. She was cited for driving under the influence, driving in the wrong lane, illegal transportation of alcohol, failure to reduce speed to avoid a crash and no proof of insurance.

Boulder Hill theft County sheriff’s deputies took a theft report at a residence in the 0-10 block of Hampton Road in Boulder Hill Feb. 3.

Respond to domestic County sheriff’s deputies investigated an alleged battery between two individuals at a residence in the 0-20th block of Park Drive North in Bristol Township Feb. 5 at 1 a.m.

Police said no complaints were signed in the incident.

SHAW MEDIA Two Aurora residents, Rosalio Ramirez, 54, of South Bishop Road, and Lino Sosa, 36, of Rural Street, were both recently sentenced to prison by Judge Timothy J. McCann for unlawful delivery of a controlled substance pursuant to negotiated plea agreements, according to Kendall County State’s Attorney Eric Weis.

Both Ramirez and Sosa pleaded guilty to the crimes, Weis said.

Ramirez will serve a 10-year jail term, while Sosa will serve nine years for his role in a cocaine delivery that occurred last February.

According to Weis, charges were filed against both Ramirez and Sosa after an investigation by members of the Kendall County Cooperative Police Assistance Team (CPAT) revealed that Ramirez was selling cocaine.

During the investigation, officers learned that Sosa was also involved in the sale of illegal narcotics to undercover officers. Both Ramirez and Sosa were caught on authorized overhears discussing the sale of cocaine with undercover officers just prior to their arrest.

Weis stated that because a high volume of narcotics was involved in this case, over 100 grams of cocaine, truth in sentencing would apply to their jail sentences. As a result, neither offender will be eligible for release from prison after only serving half of their sentence. Ramirez is a twice-convicted felon and has been sentenced to prison on a prior occasion.

Assistant State’s Attorney Frank Gorup prosecuted the cases. Attorney Richard Irvin represented Ramirez.

Attorney Liam Dixon represented Sosa.

The Plano star’s night was over.

Better safe than sorry.

Vann, a junior guard, scored 20 points and had 11 rebounds for the Reapers in Monday’s nonconference game at Rosary. But she sat the entire fourth quarter of Plano’s 64-37 loss in Aurora.

“I’m not sure what happened,” Vann said. “I hit my shin. Whatever it was, I felt some pressure. Especially with regionals next week and a game for the conference title coming up, best to stay out.”

Indeed, the Reapers’ (18-8) biggest games lie ahead.

She responded. They all did.”

Peotone snapped Plano’s eightgame winning streak on Tuesday 54-47, and in the process handed the visiting Reapers their first Interstate Eight loss and first defeat since December.

Nathan Shead scored 19 points and Elijah Maisonet added 10 for Plano (176, 7-1), which shot just 35 percent from the floor.

The Reapers held a 10-point lead early, and took an 18-17 advantage into halftime. But Peotone surged ahead with a 24-15 third quarter. Jack Halverson had 19 points and 10 rebounds to lead Peotone.

“It was their night. Peotone is a good team,” Plano coach Kyle Kee said.

“They seemed to hit every shot and we were sluggish. We couldn’t get anything going to the basket, couldn’t get any rhythm.”

Plano came into Tuesday fresh off a resounding 60-35 win over Streator on Friday. Shead scored 14 points, Maisonet and Anthony Martinez 12 in that game.

The Reapers return to action Friday, when they host Manteno. It’s also Senior Night and Hall of Fame induction night.

“We hadn’t lost in a while,” Kee said. “It’s one of those things that we’ll watch the film, learn from it and move on to Senior Night.”

Ivan Garcia remembers his first regional title like it was yesterday.

“Freshman year, we were at Chicago Agriculture,” said the Plano junior.

“I teched the first kid, moved onto finals and pinned a kid in the third period.”

It’s been a long road, but Garcia looks like he’s back.

Dominating the 138-pound bracket at the Class 2A Plano Regional on Saturday, Garcia led a group of three Reapers into the sectional meet at Sterling.

Garcia will be joined at Sterling by teammates Jake Krotz, third at 126 pounds, and Michael Marshall, second at 152. Ottawa won the team regional championship.

Nobody was as relieved by the regional results as Garcia. A state qualifier as a freshman, he missed all of last year with a broken ankle and barely wrestled in November and December this season.

“I finally feel like myself again,” Garcia said. “It feels great to get after it.”

He certainly got after it Saturday.

Only seeded fourth, probably because of lack of match results this year, Garcia (13-4) pinned Joliet Catholic’s Luke Singletary in 46 seconds and won an 11-0 major decision over Streator’s Mike Dunkelberger, then decisioned Ottawa’s Jacob McCarrens 10-6 in the final.

“Ivan got absolutely zero respect in the seeding meeting and he plowed right through the bracket,” Plano coach Sean Masten said. “Ivan wrestled today like I heard he wrestled before I came to town. I hope he can carry it forward.”

He’s put in the work, practicing twice a day after school first at Plano and then at Martinez Wrestling Club.

“Everybody doesn’t really know who I am in Class 2A so I think they underestimate me,” Garcia said. “I want to keep staying low on the radar.”

Marshall, a football and track standout, was off the wrestling radar before this year. He had not wrestled since he was in the sixth grade.

He approached Masten about joining the team days into the season, and reaped his rewards Saturday. Marshall (14-23) pinned Sandwich’s Eli Thielk and LaSalle-Peru’s Jake Fitzgerald to reach the finals before taking a pin against Manteno’s Jimmy Silva.

“He was raw when we first got him.

Great strength, great quickness, great speed,” Masten said. “To see him qualify for sectionals four months later is

just outstanding.”

Krotz (27-7) was in as fierce as any bracket at regionals, with the two of the top six 126-pounders in Class 2A at Plano.

Krotz was pinned by sixth-ranked Caleb Boudreau of Manteno in the semifinals, but came back to take a 4-0 decision over Zach Saler of Morris.

“It could have been my last match ever if I had lost. I was definitely think-

ing about it,” Krotz said. “I could have done better. I’m still a little beat up right now.”

That was apparent afterward, as Krotz had a wrap applied to his left shoulder. His bid for a fourth straight state meet, though, is still alive for another week.

“I’m going to celebrate this for now,” Krotz said. “Once I see the brackets, I’ll start thinking more about sectionals.”

Plano’s next opponent, Sandwich, is near the bottom of the pack in the Interstate Eight, but Chernick knows to expect a battle from the neighboring

school.

Plano beat Sandwich 52-43 in the conference tournament, a game the Reapers trailed at half.

“It won’t be easy – Sandwich played us extremely tough in the tournament,” Chernick said. “It sure would be a nice reward for these kids. They work extremely hard and have done everything we’ve asked of them.”
