By LYLE R. ROLFE news@kendallcountynow.com Jonathan Whowell was sworn in Monday night as the new Plano police chief.

Whowell, who had been serving as interim chief since July 1, took the oath to officially become chief at Monday’s City Council meeting in front of more than 80 people. He replaced Steve Eaves, who retired from the chief position on July 1 of last year.

The well-wishers who packed the council chambers included Whowell’s family, fellow law enforcement officers from departments throughout the area and many of his officers, who were able to leave the city in the hands of the Kendall County Sheriff’s Office while at the ceremony.

Two of Whowell’s brothers, Andrew and Joey, who had become police officers before him also were in the audience to see their younger brother take the oath to be chief.

Whowell said he joined the Plano Police Department 19 years ago after admiring his oldest brother Andrew, who became an officer with the Arlington Heights Police Department, and their middle brother Joey, who was an officer with the Prospect Heights Department.

Andrew, now celebrating nearly 30 years with Arlington Heights, holds the rank of deputy chief, which was the highest of the three until Monday night when Jonathan became Plano chief.

Now that the younger brother outranks him, Andrew said he has to listen to Jonathan as the leader in the family of police officers.

Joey, the middle brother, had to give up police work with the Prospect Heights Department after several years because of a physical problem.

Whowell was raised in Chicago, where he was working as a carpenter, but moved to this area when his wife, Wendy, took a teaching job with the Oswego School District. He said seeing his brothers as police officers gave him the bug to join a department. He said he wanted to join his brother Andrew, but that department would not allow mem-

bers of the same family to serve on the department. He learned of an opening with Plano and applied, never dreaming, he said, of ever becoming Plano’s Top Cop. He was promoted to sergeant in 2004, lieutenant in 2008 and interim chief on July 1.

Andrew Whowell said Jonathan has the perfect temperament to be a police officer. He is easygoing, always smiling and rarely lets anything bother him.

“I am very proud of my brother. He’s been very passionate about this community,” he said.

“I never thought I’d be a chief of police. I was just thankful to be in law enforcement,” Jonathan Whowell said. “I love having the opportunity to serve the citizens of Plano. This is a great community and this is a great job.”

Along with the new title, he also received a raise, going from $89,000 to $94,103 plus the usual benefits of working for the city.

Whowell said he was close to having his full staff of 20 officers, but one of the three now at the Police Academy did not pass the physical requirements, so they will be hiring a replacement in April for this person.

Following the swearing-in ceremony, council members took a short break so they could enjoy a huge cake that was cut and served by city officials.

The council chambers then returned to normal with its usual small audience of spectators and city employees.

DeKalb judge sought for clerk case

By TONY SCOTT tscott@kendallcountynow.com A Kendall County judge is asking a DeKalb County judge to hear the battery case of Kendall County Circuit Court Clerk Robyn Ingemunson.

Ingemunson is accused of misdemeanor battery against one of her deputy clerks at a Yorkville bar in December. Kendall County Judge Timothy J. McCann sent a letter Jan. 12 to 23rd Circuit Court Chief Judge Robbin J. Stuckert asking that the case be heard by a judge from outside Kendall County. The 23rd Circuit consists of Kendall and DeKalb counties.

“It is my opinion, as presiding judge of Kendall County, that this mat-

ter should not be heard by any judge currently sitting in Kendall County,” McCann wrote. “I am asking that you exercise your authority to assign a judge to hear this matter.”

According to a Yorkville Police Department news release, Ingemunson, 49, of the 2300 block of Iroquois Lane, Robyn Ingemunson Yorkville, was charged following a Dec. 21 incident at a bar in the 600 block of West Veterans Parkway, where she made “physical contact with the victim.”

However, the release states that the victim was not injured.

A complaint filed with the Circuit

Clerk’s Office on Dec. 27 states that Ingemunson “knowingly made physical contact with [the alleged victim] in that she placed her hand on her head and pushed her head.” The alleged victim is an employee of the Circuit Clerk’s Office, according to court records.

Kendall County State’s Attorney Eric Weis filed charges Jan. 9 against Ingemunson for misdemeanor battery.

Weis explained that if a new judge is assigned, the case would still be physically heard at the courthouse in Kendall County but that the judge would be from DeKalb County.

A court hearing and plea setting for Ingemunson is scheduled for 8:30 a.m.

Ex-speaker files countersuit against ‘Individual A’ over hush money SHAW MEDIA Imprisoned former House speaker Dennis Hastert wants one of his sexual abuse victims to return the $1.7 million in hush money the Illinois Republican paid him over several years, according to a court filing last week in an ongoing civil case, the Associated Press reported.

The document is a counter claim to the victim’s breach-of-contract lawsuit that he filed last year, arguing that Hastert owed him $1.8 million – what he said was the unpaid balance of an unwritten $3.5 million hush-money deal, according to the AP. Hastert, 75, is serving a 15-month

sentence in a federal prison for violating banking laws as he withdrew thousands of dollars, starting in 2010, to pay the victim, abruptly halting the payments after the FBI interviewed Hastert in late 2014.

Documents in Hastert’s federal criminal case say he abused the victim – referred to in filings Dennis only as “Individual A” Hastert – when he was 14 in the late 1970s when Hastert coached wrestling at Yorkville High School, the AP reported.

According to the AP, the Jan. 18 filing on Hastert’s behalf in Kendall

County Circuit Court asserts the victim was obliged to keep quiet about their deal “for the remainder of his life.”

“Since Plaintiff breached his obligations ... any nonperformance on the part of Defendant [Hastert] is excused,” the filing said. It adds: “Plaintiff’s retention of the $1.7 million is unjust.”

At Hastert’s April sentencing, a federal judge dubbed him “a serial child molester,” saying he sexually abused at least four former students at Yorkville from 1965 to 1981.

A Jan. 19 statement from the victim’s attorney, Kristi Browne, criticized Hastert’s filing, the AP reported.

“Mr. Hastert has decided that rather

than live up to his promise to compensate his victim for his molestation and resulting injury, he will ask his victim to pay him,” Browne told the AP. The AP reported that federal prosecutors have said Individual A did not threaten to expose Hastert if he didn’t pay, adding they don’t regard the payments as part of an extortion. It was Hastert, they said, who refused Individual A’s request to bring in lawyers and put the deal in writing. Prosecutors have also said they would have charged Hastert with sexual abuse if they could have. But the statute of limitations expired decades ago, so the only option for offering those abused some semblance of justice, prosecutors said, was to charge Hastert with comparatively mundane banking violations.

Won’t be replaced right away

By TONY SCOTT tscott@kendallcountynow.com Kendall County Coroner Jacquie Purcell’s chief deputy has resigned, Purcell confirmed Monday.

Samantha Marshall was introduced to the Kendall County Board in December as the office’s new deputy coroner; she had worked in Grundy County before coming to Kendall.

Purcell said Marshall “resigned during a

disciplinary hearing.”

Purcell said she and Senior Deputy Coroner Brian Leonard would fulfill the chief deputy role in the interim.

She said she will see how that “plays out over the next few weeks” and a decision would be made whether Leonard would go full-time.

She said if she decides to hire someone to replace Marshall, she will post the job on the website for the American Board of Medicolegal Death Investigators.

“Regardless, someone would come in with full experience,” she said.

announced for WCC SHAW MEDIA Waubonsee Community College recently named John Metych III as assistant dean for social sciences, education and world languages.

In this role, his primary responsibilities are to provide additional support and leadership for the hiring, supervising, mentoring and evaluation of credit adjunct faculty in the division.

He was previously employed at ITT Technical Institute for more than seven years, first as an associate dean and then, most recently, as the dean of academic affairs.

Prior to ITT, Metych was employed at Westwood College as a full-time instructor and then as the Technology Institute program director and the technology program chair.

Metych also served as an interim director of education.

Metych also has experience as a lead instructor for Computer Learning Centers, as an adjunct faculty member at College of John DuPage and Metych III Triton College, and as a freelance course writer for Pearson Custom Learning Solutions.

Throughout his career Metych has had experience with accreditation, curriculum development and faculty development and training programs.

Metych holds a master’s degree from the University of Illinois and a bachelor’s degree from Benedictine University.

Plenty of bad news, but did you miss these stories?

Over the past several weeks you may have noticed that we’ve published a significant amount of bad news – most of it involving serious crime here in and around Kendall County. But in case you missed it, we’ve also published several “good news” articles over the same several weeks and want to call your attention to just a few of those stories in case you overlooked them: • In the weeks leading up to the Christmas holiday, the students in Lisa Paluch’s third-grade class at Prairie Point Elementary School in Oswego made and then with the help of their parents distributed 300 snowman decorations to residents in several local nursing homes. We’re certain the decorations helped brighten the holiday for many of the nursing home residents.

• The past several months have been extremely difficult for the many volunteers at the Kendall County Community Food Pantry in Yorkville.

In June the pantry’s former longtime

director Maria Spaeth was found dead of a prescription overdose, just days after the Yorkville police department executed a search warrant at the pantry. Then, last week Spaeth’s husband, Ken, was arrested at his home in Lake Holiday and his father-in-law, William Crowley, 77, of Scottsdale, Arizona, was taken into custody by authorities in Arizona in connection with the theft of between $150,000 and $200,000 from the pantry.

Despite the unfortunate series of events, the pantry and its determined group of volunteers have managed to continue to serve the county’s neediest residents over the past several months and through the holidays without missing a beat.

As Tandy Pinter, a member of the new food pantry board, said, “The search warrants, missing money and shocking drug overdose of our trusted leader in June should have collapsed the operation. Instead, our 50-plus volunteers kept their heads in the game, showed up every week, and perse-

vered through their grief to guarantee the mission was fulfilled – caring for the hundreds of clients each week, relying on us to help feed their families.”

• Over the past few weeks several buildings in downtown Oswego have been vandalized with graffiti. In one especially despicable act, a vandal or vandals spraypainted a wall at the Veterans Memorial in front of the Oswego Public Library. We’re happy to report this week the graffiti was not on the wall for very long, thanks to Nedrow Decorating Inc. Last Wednesday morning, Nedrow employees Matt Gibson and his cousin, Bryan, chemically removed the graffiti. They are set to return in late spring or early summer when warmer weather will allow them to powerwash the entire memorial and then seal it to protect it from further damage.

Nedrow, a commercial painting firm based in Aurora since 1965, is providing its services at no charge to the village.

Congratulations are in order! We’ve managed to survive the mid-winter holiday season relatively intact, from the grueling Christmas shopping season, through school and church programs and concerts, and ending up welcoming in 2017 with the fervent hope that it won’t be any worse than crazed 2016 was.

We spent another typical Matile New Year’s at home where we kept our supply of pickled herring handy to welcome in the year as we watched TV hosts acting goofy and trying, unsuccessfully, to pretend to be wild and crazy hipsters. And with the start of 2017 we’re now practicing writing the new year on our checks and still trying to decompress from the November election.

With election and holiday hysteria both now thankfully past, we can start dealing with our regular, day-to-day hysteria.

It’s times like these when we grab onto any bit of normalcy we can find, and for me, that means anticipating each day’s mail delivery with its usual load of junk and real mail. But even junk mail – absent those aluminum siding and Publishing Clearing House circulars – can provide the alert reader with a few new factoids to file away. And so, with no (or at least very little) further ado, here are a bunch of things I never would have found out had I not carefully opened, scanned and recycled all the junk mail that arrived each and every day the mail carrier showed up at the mailbox out in front of the Matile Manse: This week’s U.S. Navy quiz: What was the name of the first sub to cross the North Pole beneath the ice? As all us ’50s kids know, it was the U.S.S. Nautilus, the Navy’s first nuclear submarine, that made the transit on Aug. 3, 1958.

Nobody on Earth has ever lived to be one Neptune year old. A Neptune year is the 164.8 Earth years the distant planet spends making one circuit of the Sun. January is National Soup Month.

Says here the term lee, meaning the sheltered side of a ship, comes from an Anglo Saxon word referring to the side of a building that was out of the wind where a laborer would take his lunch.

Plano Rotary Club honors two students of the month PLANO RECORD Plano High School Principal Eric Benson hosted PHS seniors Marily Arboleda and Bradi Gann at the Jan. 17 Plano Rotary Club luncheon meeting, enabling the students to see a service club in action, and to also enjoy a presentation by a local author.

Benson chooses two students to represent the high school each month, focusing specifically on academic success and extracurricular activities.

Marily is currently enrolled in five AP classes. Upon graduation, she will have a total of 12 AP classes equaling 36 college credit hours earned during her high school years. In addition to academic pursuits, Marily said she participates in soccer and is applying for scholarships to attend either Northwestern University or a state school in neurosciences and human communication sciences. She hopes to work in speech pathology.

Bradi told the club members that she is currently enrolled in three AP classes and upon graduation she will have total of nine AP classes to her benefit. Bradi is looking at Lincoln Memorial University in Harrogate, Tennessee, to pursue a degree in veterinary medicine. Bradi is a three-sport athlete at PHS. Plano resident Rania Zeithar, author and speaker, was featured at the meeting, promoting her new book,

Zeithar has been writing since the age of 10, and is now working on her second book, in Arabic, to help readers in the Middle East understand everyday life in the United States.

The mission of Rotary International is to provide service to others, promote integrity, and advance world understanding, goodwill and peace through its fellowship of business, professional and community leaders. The Plano Rotary has incorporated a special focus to their mission to support local youth through scholarships and leadership opportunities.

Sandwich working on rules for chickens Ordinance to set out details for keeping hens in city limits

By PAT WALLIS news@kendallcountynow.com SANDWICH – An ordinance that sets regulations concerning backyard chickens was discussed at a recent Sandwich City Council meeting.

The council approved allowing chickens within the city at an earlier session in 2016, but they are presently not allowed until an ordinance is passed that states specific rules.

The ordinance is to include regulations for the construction of chicken coops and where they can be placed;

the fencing, sanitation and noise; the number of hens allowed; and other details, such as the permit fee and the fines charged if rules are not followed.

One alderman mentioned he’d talked to several residents about the issue and “most said they didn’t care [about backyard chickens], but they don’t want them next door.”

In other matters, Director of Public Works/City Engineer Tom Horak reported on the 2016 Concrete Street Maintenance Project, telling the council that a sidewalk has to be replaced at the corner of Sunset Avenue and Cindy Lane because there are footprints in the concrete and expansion joints have to be filled at the sidewalk/curb interface.

Mayor Rick Olson reported the auction of the city’s surplus equipment brought in $9,000, and he considered the one-hour auction to be successful.

St. Charles man charged with aggravated DUI, reckless homicide in 3-car incident

After the collision, a 2002 Hyundai Elantra driven by Scott McAdams, 36, of DeKalb, rear-ended Yanni’s truck, police said.

A judge approved a warrant for Yanni’s arrest Jan. 18, according to court documents, but he remained at Kishwaukee Hospital late that afternoon. Hospital officials would not provide information about his condition.

Evan Cortez, 23, of Elgin, was a passenger in Ode’s vehicle. He was taken to OSF Saint Anthony Medical Center in Rockford with serious injuries.

Both Ode and Cortez were wearing seat belts at the time of the crash, police said.

River and McAdams were treated for minor injuries, police said.

Katie Bryant, River’s mother, said her son was driving east on Route 38 when he saw another truck coming toward him. He was able to pull over to avoid a more serious accident.

Bryant said her son’s vehicle was clipped on the driver’s side. He then called 911 when he looked back and saw more vehicles were involved in the crash, Bryant said.

His mother, Marsha, died in 2008.

DeKALB – A St. Charles man is facing multiple charges after a four-car crash that killed a DeKalb High School student and left many in the local educational community in mourning.

Johnathon R. Ode, 18, was in his senior year at DeKalb High, where both his father and stepmother work.

DeKalb School District 428 Board President Victoria Newport called Ode’s death “a Johnathon tragic loss to the Dis- R. Ode trict 428 school family and the DeKalb, Malta and Cortland communities.”

“We send our deepest condolences to the Ode family,” she said. “District 428 Student Services personnel have been available all day today to support our students as well as our staff and they will continue to be available to students and staff as necessary. Additionally, a therapy dog was in the high school today to help comfort our

students and staff.”

Ode previously lived in Sandwich and attended Sandwich High School.

His father, Stephen Ode, is a science teacher at DeKalb High School, and his stepmother, Katie Ode, also works there.

Prosecutors have charged John A. Yanni III, 25, of the 100 block of south 18th Street in St. Charles, with aggravated driving under the influence and reckless homicide in connection with the crash. If convicted of the most serious charge, aggravated DUI causing death, he could face three to seven years in prison.

The crash occurred about 7:15 p.m.

Jan. 17 on Route 38 east of Peace Road, according to a news release from the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office.

Police said Yanni was driving a 2001 Chevrolet Silverado pickup west on Route 38 when his vehicle crossed the highway’s center line.

Yanni’s truck first hit a 1995 Ford F-150 pickup driven by Rich J. River, 19, of Cortland, then collided head-on with Ode’s vehicle, a 2000 Ford Taurus, sheriff’s Chief Deputy Andy Sullivan said.

Police identify victim of Orchard Road shooting

Police said Terrelle A. Suggs, 20, of the 900 block of New Haven Avenue, Aurora, died at Loyola Medical Center in Maywood at 8:30 a.m. Jan. 14.

According to police, Suggs and three passengers in his vehicle were driving northbound on Orchard Road at 9:44 p.m. when another vehicle pulled alongside them and shot several rounds into the victim’s vehicle. One of the rounds struck Suggs in the head, police said.

Police said they were initially summoned to the scene on a report of shots fired and found Suggs’ vehicle had crashed.

John Chernick Plano girls basketball coach and another by Cali Caruso, Coal City led 4-3 and never trailed again.

Plano’s MaKayli Vann had 21 points and 17 rebounds and she scored all 11 of the Reapers’ points in the third quarter. MaKenzie Vann added six points and Jaz Hill had five points and 14 rebounds.

Coal City led 25-20 at half and 3531 after three quarters, but Plano was within 39-37 with two minutes left.

From there, though, Coal City’s Makenna Crater hit a 3-pointer to boost the lead back up and Plano was held scoreless the last two minutes.

Coal City advances to play Herscher in Friday’s final.

“I think people underestimated us coming into this tournament,” Bugg said. “Now we get to play for the title on our home floor. That’s going to be a lot of fun.”

Plano plays Seneca at 7 p.m. Friday for third place.

“This was a tough loss, but if we just hit a few of the easy shots we missed and took care of the ball just a little bit better we’d be fine,” Chernick said. “We will regroup from this loss.”

Coal City struggled out of the gate this season.

The Coalers won just two of eight games before Interstate Eight Conference play began.

That was then. This is now.

The Coalers have transformed themselves into “that team nobody wants to play.”

Just ask Plano coach John Chernick. Chernick’s Reapers, the No. 1 seed in the I-8 tournament, were upset by the Coalers 47-37 in Monday’s semifinals at Coal City.

“Give a lot of credit to Coal City for this game,” said Chernick, whose team fell to 16-5. “We knew they would be up in our face on defense, and they were. We had too many empty possessions with missed shots and turnovers. We only shot 22 percent and you aren’t going to win a lot of games doing that. They took us out of what we wanted to do.”

The tight man-to-man Coalers defense not only limited the Reapers to a low shooting percentage, but forced 22 turnovers.

Meanwhile the Coalers (11-12) were patient on offense, always looking for the best shot. Junior Bridget Kauzlaric finished with a team-high 18 points with four 3-pointers. Mackenzie Bugg added 15 points and nine rebounds.

“We have definitely learned how to mesh together as a team,” Bugg said.

“We really take pride in our defense.

We work on it all the time and it’s what other teams know us for.”

Reapers rally in fourth

Kee, the Reapers head coach, estimates they’ve played for third place five times. Playing in the final, though, is another story.

Not anymore.

In rallying past Streator 51-46 in Tuesday’s Interstate Eight Conference tournament semifinal in Coal City, Plano advanced to Friday’s 7 p.m. final against Lisle.

“I don’t think we’ve ever been in the championship game before,” Kee said. “It will be fun playing in that last game.”

Plano (14-5), the tournament’s second seed, earned its way there.

Streator led 23-18 at halftime Tuesday, 33-29 through three quarters. Plano finally took the lead with three minutes left on Ethan Kee’s 3-pointer, one of his three makes from distance.

Garcia gambled late in the match, and it didn’t pay off.

“Toward the end I kind of made a desperate move,” Garcia said. “I tried to roll through and catch him off guard and ended up getting pushed on my back. The move didn’t work out but it was worth the try.”

Krotz (23-5) won a 6-1 decision over Herscher’s Colin Burke, then was pinned by eventual champion Jackson Beene of Seneca in the 126-pound semifinal.

Plano, which has won five straight games since the calendar flipped to January, previously beat Lisle 64-44 on Dec. 22 in Lisle. The fifth-seeded Lions beat Manteno 65-59 in Tuesday’s other semifinal.

“This is huge, getting to the championship,” Kee said. “We have not played well in tournaments and it’s haunted us all year. It should be a great crowd Friday and a lot of fun to play in that last game. Lisle will be a challenge.”

Plano previously beat Coal City 6150 on Saturday.

Shead had 19 points, Anthony Martinez 15, Maisonet 10 and Brandon Contreras 10.

He rebounded to decision Coal City’s Lane Kutemeier 13-7 for third place.

“It’s good to see Jake wrestle for third the way he did,” Masten said. “I know he was extremely disappointed with his semifinal match; he was like a different person. It was good to see him bounce back.”

Coincidentally, Krotz hurt his knee against Kutemeier in their match during dual season. Krotz still claimed to be “beat up,” but it couldn’t stop him from besting his fifth-place finishes from freshman and junior year.

“I was kind of iffy for this weekend, but it’s my senior year. I wanted to compete for a conference championship,” Krotz said. “I’m glad I got the chance. It was a little bit of a sloppy match, but it was good to get the win.”

The Leathernecks are coming off a 6-5 season under first-year coach Charlie Fisher, highlighted by a 28-23 win over Northern Illinois.

Ward, 6-foot-1 and 215 pounds, threw for 1,787 yards and 20 touchdowns as a senior in leading Plano to a 7-3 record and playoff berth. He also ran for 247 yards and six TDs. Ward, a three-year starter, has come a long way from the 5-9 kid Plano coach Brad Kunz first penciled in as a sophomore.

“He has probably put more time and effort into chasing his dreams than any kid I’ve ever had,” Kunz said. “He really put in the time in the weight room and his parents did a great job of giving him opportunities to get better.”

Adeoti is the fifth Reaper in four years to commit to a Division I program.

His is a unique story.

The 5-foot-10, 190-pound speedster who runs a 4.4 40-yard dash never played football before high school.

His mom had to be talked into letting Adeoti play as a freshman.

“My mom didn’t like the whole contact thing with football,” said Ad-

eoti, who also runs track. “My freshman year I didn’t know anything about football.”

By his junior year Adeoti had caught up, catching 30 passes for 637 yards and seven TDs. This past year he caught 35 passes for 745 yards and 12 TDs. He joins a North Dakota program coming off a 9-3 season and share of the Big Sky Conference championship.

“Israel has the speed to play at the next level,” Kunz said, “and the speed to contribute next season at the next level.”

Plano could have as many as 15 players competing in college next year.

Ward is the fifth hard commit for Western in the 2017 class and the second quarterback, joining Adam Mullett of Fishers Hamilton Southeastern (Indiana). Western returns starting quarterback Sean McGuire, who threw for 2,914 yards last fall as a sophomore.

“Tyler has a phenomenal arm in terms of strength and a great football mind,” Kunz said. “Western is getting a heck of a deal.”

Ward is going to Western ready to compete.

“Injuries happen, things happen, you see NIU, they went through six quarterbacks,” Ward said. “I’m going to bust my butt and continue to bust it.”

Ward, Adeoti reap rewards Plano QB commits to Western Illinois, WR headed to North Dakota

Israel Adeoti and Tyler Ward spent all of spring break together last year in a car, two football players searching for a college home.

Plano’s wide receiver and quarterback visited five colleges in the Midwest. No offers came. Neither did they arrive during the summer, when the two frequented camps together.

“It got to the point where we did everything right, did all the right moves and nobody would give us a chance,” Adeoti said. “We have both been overlooked so much.”

They’ve both been found.

Ward committed to Western Illinois Jan. 17, and four days later fellow Plano senior Adeoti announced that he was joining North Dakota. Both are Division I Football Championship Subdivision programs.

Western Illinois was a natural fit for Ward, and not just for the Plano purple-like colors. His dad, Jim, went to school in Macomb. Ward has visited Shaw Media file photos the school a number of times.

Plano’s Krotz third, Garcia fourth at I-8 meet

Ivan Garcia slammed his headgear down, incensed at how his last match ended.

At least the Plano junior made it to the medal podium.

Garcia missed the Interstate Eight Conference wrestling meet as a freshman with a knee injury. A broken ankle cost him all of last season.

He had wrestled just eight matches this year before Saturday, but managed to earn a fourth-place finish at 138 pounds at the conference meet in Wilmington.

Garcia joined teammate Jake

Krotz, third at 126 pounds, as medalists for the Reapers. Both have been plagued by injuries all year.

“Ivan has wrestled maybe eight matches in the last 14 months, so any match he can get in before regionals is important,” Plano coach Sean Masten said. “It’s nice to see Jake and Ivan back wrestling. I won’t say that they’re 100 percent, but the fact that they are able to compete is a good thing.”

Coal City, ranked No. 1 in Class 1A by Illinois Matmen, won the team title. Wilmington was second, Sandwich fifth and Plano 12th.

Garcia (7-4) won an 11-3

major decision against Wilmington’s Landon Flynn in his first match, then was pinned by eventual 138-pound champ Drew Sonnefeldt of Lisle in the semifinal.

Limited by a sprained ankle this season, Garcia got a different injury scare in the first period of his third-place match with Streator’s Mike Dunkleberger.

“We got into a little scramble, he caught me and somehow I landed on my neck,” Garcia said. “I felt a sharp pain running through my back. It hurt throughout the entire match but I knew I had to finish.”
