In 2011, Hollywood glitz and glamour descended on the city of Plano as the Superman movie “Man of Steel” was filmed partly on location in the town of “Smallville.”

Now, four years later, the film experience lives on for hundreds of people each year in the form of “Smallville Superfest.” This year proved no exception as the downtown area was filled with people enjoying the food booths, musical acts, craft vendors and the ever-popular zip line through downtown.

Dozens of volunteers helped make the family-oriented event successful, helping to coordinate everything from the information booth to Fishing with the Mayor to car shows. The Little Rock-Fox Fire Department offered some cooling relief in the form of water bucket fights. For more photos, see page 7.

Assistant Kendall OKs new technology director principals named in Plano

By LYLE R. ROLFE news@kendallcountynow.com The Plano High School at 704 W. Abe St., and the Emily G. Johns Elementary School at 430 Mitchell Court, will start the school year with new assistant principals.

Plano School Board members recently approved hiring Krystal Rasmussen for the high school position and Kevin Swann for the elementary school.

Rasmussen replaces Phil Pakowski, who returned to Plainfield School District 202 to work as assistant principal for curriculum and instruction, and Swann replaces Abby Alvarez, who was named principal at Centennial School in Plano.

Rasmussen, a Sycamore resident, said she applied for the new position because she wanted a challenging administrative position where she could use her communication, mentoring and curriculum skills while growing professionally.

She had been principal since 2012 at the HS Academy, which was in East High School in Rockford. The Academy had 470 students and 20 teachers, she said.

Before that, she had taught English at the Regional Learning Center in Rockford since 2009 and taught English in the Belvidere School District for two years.

Rasmussen received her master’s degree in educational administration in 2011 and her master’s in curriculum and instruction in 2009, both from Northern Illinois University.

In 2005, she received her BA degree in English at the University of Illinois in Springfield.

She earned certificates and endorsements for K-12 administration, grades 9-12 English and grades 6-8 in middle school language and is a qualified Charlotte Danielson Evaluator.

Rasmussen joins Laurel Mateyka, the other assistant principal at the high school.

Kendall County has a new technology director.

The County Board hired Scott Koeppel of Bloomington to the position during a special board meeting Aug. 13. The vote to approve Koeppel was split, 7-2, with board member Bob Davidson and Dan Koukol casting the two “no” votes. Board member Elizabeth Flowers was absent from the meeting.

Scott Jeff Wilkins, the Koeppel county’s administrator, said Koeppel’s base salary is about $90,000 not including any benefits he chooses including dental, vision and health insurance or the IMRF pension program.

Koeppel will begin his position on Aug. 24.

Wilkins added that Koeppel was “an excellent candidate” because of his experience working with county and municipal government.

“Definitely a well rounded candidate,” Wilkins said.

Stan Laken, the county’s former technology director, retired earlier this month. He had been with the county for 14 years.

Laken said he thought Koeppel would be a good fit for Kendall County and supported the board’s decision to hire him.

Koeppel, 35, currently works in McLean County as the county’s assistant IT director and manages a staff of about 14 people.

He graduated from Illinois State University with a degree in information technology. His first job was with the city of Bloomington as the support specialist for the city’s fire department. He then went to Livingston County, where he became a support specialist for the county. He noted that he reported to the County Board in that position and was its first IT person.

“I’m looking forward to helping out,” he said. “I think this is a great, growing place.”

After the meeting, Koeppel said maintaining his department with the uncertainty of Illinois’ budget will be the biggest issue for him.

“That’s something that could be changing frequently, so not knowing what’s going to come from the

state is the biggest hurdle,” he said.

Budget issues also were the reason Koukol and Davidson said they couldn’t support the hire.

Davidson said he would have liked to see the top two or three candidates before the County Board. He added that he took issue with the hiring procedure.

“We’re the ones [who are] going to do the hiring and that’s the way it’s always been,” he said.

Koukol said he also couldn’t support the new hire.

“Originally, when this position was going to become open I was hoping we could keep it open a little bit longer with our financial outlook and our budget the way it looks,” Koukol said. “I think this guy is a great guy just because of the input I got from my colleagues.”

Board member Jeff Wehrli countered that the position was too important to go unfilled.

“There are a lot of different ways to trim the budget but I don’t believe one of them would be not hiring a new IT director,” he said. “We have already spent some time without leadership in several other areas and it’s not the greatest feeling in the world.”

Getting off to a healthy start Students head to the doctor’s office on their way back to class

By KATRINA J.E. MILTON kmilton@shawmedia.com Dr. Sylvia Trevino’s office has been busy this past week, but it’s not because of a flu strain or summer colds.

Trevino, the pediatrician at Healthy Beginnings Pediatrics, 1200 US Highway 34 in Plano, has been busy squeezing in last-minute appointments for students before the start of school.

As summer vacation comes to an end, students are making sure they have new backpacks, crayons, notebooks and outfits for the start of school. School physicals and vaccines also are on the backto-school list for students to make sure they are healthy for their first day of class.

“Having back-to-school physicals makes sure the students are healthy and ready for school,” Trevino said. “It’s a full headto-toe physical that makes sure nothing is overlooked. We want to make sure they’re starting off the school year on the right foot. ... It’s a way to assess their risk of diabetes, lead poisoning and tuberculosis and discuss asthma, allergies and medications. It’s an opportunity for parents to bring up concerns they might have.”

Depending on what grade students are entering, the state of Illinois requires different vaccines before the first day of school.

“Vaccines make sure they are fully protected against communicable diseases,” Trevino said. “It’s important for the child’s health and the general public, both at school and outside of school.”

Shirley DeCorte, the principal at Woodbury Elementary School in Sandwich, said not only are immunizations required for students before they enter certain grade levels, but also dental, medical and eye exams.

Dr. Sylvia Trevino pediatrician Corte said. “They’re very important. For example, measles could be deadly. If your child does not have the vaccine and gets measles, it could put everyone, both at school and in the community, in jeopardy.”

Jay Streicher, the superintendent of Somonauk School District 432, said most people don’t think about checkups as students head back to school.

“Staying healthy is a critical aspect of education,” Streicher said. “In school, we are teaching healthy habits that last a lifetime.”

DeCorte said her school also promotes wellness and a healthy lifestyle.

“In order to benefit from academic pursuits, the students need to have a healthy body physically, mentally and emotionally,” she said. “We’re not just teaching them their ABCs. We have a complete health program. We encourage hygiene, like handwashing, and we have local dentists come in to talk about brushing their teeth.”

Both Somonauk and Sandwich schools partnered with KishHealth System at Valley West Hospital in Sandwich to develop a wellness plan. Sandwich also has a wellness committee that allows representatives from each school to meet monthly to discuss health topics, including nutrition, limit-

Last year, both Somonauk and Sandwich schools participated in a 10,000 steps a day walking challenge using pedometers. Streicher said the challenge worked so well with his teachers and staff,

the students plan on participating in the challenge this year.

“Everyone in our school is trying to stay active,” Streicher said. “We also participate in International Walk to School Day in October.”

In a move toward fitness, phys-

ical education is taught every day in grades kindergarten through 12 in Sandwich and Somonauk schools. But instead of traditional P.E. with dodgeball, Streicher said that at least 80 percent of Somonauk High School students participate in lifetime fitness.

“We have six hours of lifetime fitness and one traditional hour of P.E. during the school day,” said Curt Alsvig, the lifetime fitness teacher in Somonauk. “Lifetime fitness includes weight training and cardiovascular exercises. It’s all based on fitness and achieving personal goals the students set for themselves.”

During the summer, Somonauk school’s workout room remained open and, for a small fee, students could use the facilities, exercise and be trained by Alsvig.

Kayla Heerhold, a junior at Somonauk High School, said she visited the workout room two or three times a week throughout the summer.

“I’m a cheerleader, and we have a cheer competition coming up,” she said. “I wanted to get in shape, and I wanted to push myself harder than before. It makes exercise and fitness fun. I think I’m ready for the school year.”

Local Mutual Ground office a needed step forward As we reported this past week, Mutual Ground, a nonprofit agency that provides assistance to victims of domestic violence and sexual assault in the lower Fox Valley, plans to open a small office inside the Kendall County Courthouse in October.

County State’s Attorney Eric Weis, who has worked to secure the opening of the office, noted that until now local individuals in need of Mutual Ground’s services have had to either phone or drive to the agency’s Aurora office.

The opening of a local office

in the courthouse will provide a secure place for victims to receive necessary services that can help them get their lives back on track.

Though many county residents may not be aware, there is a continuing need for the types of services offered by Mutual Ground here in Kendall County.

We see evidence of that need every week in the incident reports we receive from the Kendall County Sheriff’s Office and local municipal police departments.

For example, in Oswego alone last year village police filed reports on 72 separate cases of

domestic battery and 11 cases involving criminal sexual assault, according to the department’s annual report.

Ironically, at the same time as Weis, County Sheriff Dwight Baird and other county officials are looking forward to the opening of the Mutual Ground office at the courthouse in Yorkville, agency officials are warning that the opening of the office may be delayed due to the continuing stalemate in Springfield over a new state budget.

The state has previously contracted with Mutual Ground to

provide its services to residents of southern Kane County and Kendall Counties for fiscal 2016 at a cost of $679,611. However, the agency reports that it has yet to receive any of those funds.

The non-payment from the state comes on top of its failure to pay the agency the full amount of money it was owed for fiscal 2015.

In addition to the possible delay in the opening of the local office, Mutual Ground officials have already postponed the hiring of an early intervention counselor who would serve children ages up to 5 years old

and are considering other service cutbacks to rein in expenses.

While some taxpayers may shrug at Mutual Ground’s current financial plight, they should remember they will still pay for the cost of domestic violence through increased taxes for other services. We believe taxpayers are best and most economically served when an agency like Mutual Ground can help individuals address their problems through counseling and other services, instead of through their local police department and the court system.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Illinois budget impasse threatens safety, prosperity

To the Editor: Home is where we should be able to prosper and feel safe. Home is where I am most comfortable and the spot that I am most likely to defend to my death. Illinois is my home and for most of you reading this, Illinois is your home, too.

Now I ask you, do you want to live and die here? Do you feel safe and prosperous here? Are you comfortable enough to defend Illinois to your death? If your answer is no or you are the least bit hesitant to respond, it is probably connected in some way to the Illinois state budget … or the lack

of a state budget.

The governor and the leaders of the Illinois General Assembly have dug their heels in and tossed compromise into the wind. The dust is hitting you and me in the face. Human services providers are choking, trying to stay alive to serve those most at risk in our communities. This budget impasse is threatening our safety, our prosperity and our comfort. We the people cannot be happy with or passive about that.

Please join me in urging the governor and the General Assembly to act now to resolve their political differences and enact a state budget.

Taking no action has terrible conse-

quences for all of us, especially for our fellow citizens at greater risk, including low-income families, children, older adults and persons with disabilities.

Already, community action agencies are reducing staff and hours of operation, cutting energy assistance programs and interventions for the homeless and victims of domestic violence. The longer the budget impasse lasts, the deeper the erosion to human services. Financial reserves will be exhausted, lines of credit will be maxed-out, staff will be laid off, hours and days of operation will be reduced, and finally doors will close.

postponed or prevented the institutionalization of more than 87,000 homebound elderly. Adult protective service providers will not have the staff or resources to investigate an estimated 19,000 reports of alleged abuse, neglect, and financial exploitation. Those suffering from mental illnesses may not be able to obtain stabilizing medications. This amounts to “shooting our wounded.”

One injured in car crash at Rt. 34, Eldamain Road One person was injured in a two-car collision at about 11:14 a.m. Aug. 12 at Route 34 and Eldamain Road, Plano police said.

According to reports, a Honda minivan was stopped on Route 34 for the traffic light when a Jeep driven by Kathleen C. Richmond, 67, struck the back of the Honda.

A passenger in Richmond’s vehicle was transported to Rush-Copley Hospital in Yorkville for treatment.

Richmond was cited for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident, police reports said.

Drive wraps up today PLANO RECORD While the Relay For Life of Plano, Sandwich and Somonauk is over and was held successfully on a beautiful night in June at Plano High School, fundraising goes on through Aug. 31.

Right now, the Relay is just shy of the $35,000 mark and is looking for help to pass that goal.

As before, several area restaurants have partnered with the American Cancer Society on various dates again this year to help raise funds. The final restaurant day for the 2015 Relay has now been scheduled for Thursday, Aug. 20.

KENDALL COUNTY SHERIFF’S REPORTS Fence posts missing Someone took several green metal fence posts from an intersection at Fox River Drive and Fox Road in Fox Township, the Kendall County Highway Department told sheriff’s deputies on Aug. 11. The posts had been used to keep motorists from driving on the grass, reports said.

Underage drinking Devin T. Morgan, 18, of the 400 block of Fawn Drive, Oswego, was charged with unlawful possession of alcohol by a minor, unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia and unlawful possession of cannabis at about 10:30 p.m. Aug. 12 at Commerce Drive and Dolores Street, Oswego Township, Kendall County sheriff’s police said. A male juvenile also was charged in connection with the incident, reports said.

Warrant arrest Grace M. Rodriguez, 28, of the 0-99 block of Springdale Road, Boulder Hill, was found to be wanted on a warrant on a charge of failure to appear on a traffic offense in Kendall County court, Kendall County sheriff’s police said. Police responded to the scene of a car accident involving a pedestrian at about 11:45 a.m. Aug. 12 at Long Beach and Winrock roads in Boulder Hill and arrested Rodriguez, who was driving, according to the report.

Rodriguez also was charged with failure to yield to a pedestrian in the crosswalk, the report said. The pedestrian, Charles A. Rosseter, 68, of the 0-99 block of Sheffield Road, Boulder Hill, was taken to Rush-Copley Medical Center in Aurora for treatment.

Devivo, 24, of the 900 block of Fawn Ridge Drive, Yorkville was charged with DUI after a rollover crash at about 5:20 a.m. Sunday in the 1600 block of Route 25 in Oswego Township, Kendall County sheriff’s police said. According to reports, Devivo was taken to Rush-Copley Medical center for minor injuries and was charged

after being released from the hospital. Devivo also was charged with improper lane usage and operating an uninsured motor vehicle, reports said.

Speeding ticket Delia A. Salgado Saucedo, 21, of Cicero, was charged with speeding at about 1:30 a.m. Aug. 14 on Route 126 and Old Ridge Road, Na-Au-Say Township south of Oswego, Kendall County sheriff’s police said. According to the report, Salgado Saucedo was driving 95 mph in a 55-mph zone.

Nails in entryway Someone threw nails and screws at the front entrance to a residence in the 15600 block of Griswold Springs Road, Plano, the owner told Kendall County sheriff’s police. The incident occurred between 6 p.m. Aug. 12 and 1:30 p.m. Aug. 13, according to the report.

Dog bite Kendall County sheriff’s police are investigating an incident of a dog bite that occurred about 4:20 p.m. Aug. 16 in the 1300 block of Beecher Road in Bristol Township. Details on the incident were not immediately released.

Laundry taken An Oswego Township man told Kendall County sheriff’s police that someone took his clothing from a dryer at about 8:30 p.m.

Aug. 16 at a laundry facility in the 100 block of Light Road. The loss was estimated at about $200, the report said.

Traffic citations Tajvon Z. Jackson, 20, of the 900 block of Summerhill Drive, Aurora, was charged with driving on a suspended license at about 3:30 a.m. Aug. 17 at Routes 30 and 31 in Oswego Township,

Wheels and rims taken Kendall County sheriff’s police are investigating the theft of wheels and rims from a car between midnight and 9:40 a.m. Aug. 14 in the 0-99 block of Bereman Road in Boulder Hill.

According to reports, all four wheels and tires were removed from the car and it was left directly on the ground.

Assault charge Michael Walls, 45, of the 0-99 block of Harbor Drive, Oswego Township, was charged with assault at about 11:20 p.m. Aug. 14 in a parking lot on Harbor Drive.

According to reports, Walls is accused of assaulting a female victim in the parking lot. Walls also was charged with resisting a peace officer, reports said.

Plano played key role in early auto industry

By KRISTY LAWRIE GRAVLIN For Shaw Media Chester “Cal” Bolum was born in Fowler, New York, on Jan. 17, 1852. By about 1859 he began earning his own way, working for his board, clothes, and schooling. Then about 1865 he began “lumber-jobbing” and soon had 10-30 men under his charge.

In about 1873 he moved to Plano and entered the employ of Lewis Steward.

Soon he became a foreman and general manager, working in Steward’s extensive mills and factories.

When he was 29, he rented a farm about a half-mile out of Wasco, Ill., where he set up an extensive dairying operation. Soon he was operating several rented places in the area.

He had three large farms by the time he was in his late 40s and raised livestock on all of them.

Cal is not well-known in Plano at this point but he certainly started from “nothing” and became a successful farmer and stock-raiser before he was 50 years old. His life-partner was Cassie Buckley from the family then living near Plano. We’ll have to look farther to see if that connects her to the Buckley family we know now.

Gerald “Bunnie” Garrett was the fifth child of Joseph and Jessie (Wise) Garrett. His father was from Hancock County

and his mother was from Massillon, Ohio. The first four children are not wellknown. Two of them died in infancy – perhaps the other two did also since all we have are names. Childbearing and child-rearing were very difficult in those times.

Gerald was born on October 2, 1891, in Plano. I am assuming that “Bunnie” was an early childhood name that “stuck” with him through the years.

When he was 22, there was a disaster in Indiana.

A spring tornado roared through there, doing terrific damage and also causing a lot of flooding. The residents there were all but overcome.

Plano gathered together and determined that they should raise funds for the stricken people.

They organized a play and Bunnie was chosen to play the role of “Leonard Everett” in a play entitled “Home Ties.” Written by George Middleton, it was based on women’s suffrage, a popular issue in Plano in the spring of 1913.

The play had a good attendance and a helpful sum of money was sent on to those suffering in Indiana. There are several other stories of Plano people getting together to send earned funds to the scene of a natural tragedy.

Bunnie passed away at the age of 32, and is buried in the Plano Cemetery.

He was survived by his parents, who both passed away in 1926. He had two younger brothers who also survived him.

Cars in Plano

The Holsman Auto Company came to Plano and began manufacturing their “high wheeled” model car there in 1910. The company had been in production in Chicago for 10 years before then.

When automobiles first came to be, people were quite confused about what to do with them. Take a ride on a nice day? Get someone to the doctor quickly? Or just to show off how wealthy a person was?

Could they help on the farm in some way?

Another issue was whether the wheels should be high like the wheels on a wagon … making it not very easy to get in and out of the vehicle.

Others chose small wheels to overcome that problem, but that resulted in a vehicle that had a very difficult time getting through the ruts on the dirt

Nearly a disaster in 1896

“The handsome $40,000 schoolhouse at Plano narrowly escaped destruction last Monday night.

Contrary to the wishes of the members of the Board, there had been allowed to accumulate a barrel of refuse. In an unaccountable way it ignited, burdt [sic] a hold [sic] in the ceiling above and then, for want of a draught, died out. The barrel and contents were wholly destroyed, only a pile of ashes awaiting the janitor on Tuesday morning. Sufficient to say that acumulations [sic] of all kinds have no accomodations [sic] in the basement department of our school building.”

By 1910, the Holsman manufacturing plant moved to Plano where he tried to revive the business. But, of course, Ford’s plant produced more popular and easier to handle machines … and Holsman went under after a few years.

The high-wheeled Holsman had an advantage in that it could get over bumpy ground well. The catchy motto was “High Wheels Travel All Roads Because All Roads Are Made To Be Traveled By High Wheels.”

The Holsman appears to have been the first auto with a reverse gear. It did not have any cable drive, differential, clutch, pedals or radiator, however.

The cost was $500-$1,050 over the years. They were sold as far away as New Zealand, but the greatest market for them was the Midwest.

Holsman autos were sold to nearly 1,500 buyers.

By 1906 they were a strong contender in the business – but when the bank loan came due in 1910, they did not have sufficient funds.

Mr. Holsman sold his patents to International Harvester.

By 1908, the Model T by Ford was proving its efficiency and becoming more and more desired.

There were few garages of any sort available. (Note that Plano did have an automobile garage. There are pictures in your Plano book.) Jack Lawrie, one of the sons of James Brown Lawrie, and his family ran the garage. Jim and Bub worked there when they had time to share.

Even their father, J.B., and brother Billie, who was a farmer and had less time to assist, donated time.

Others took it upon themselves to know how to repair common problems, and to carry spare parts with them. You probably

There is just one senior on the Plano boys’ golf team, and Tim McTighe has big plans for this season.

“I expect to go out with a bang,” McTighe said.

“This is my senior year and I want to make it count. I just want to give it my best because this is probably my last year. We have a young team, but I believe in them.”

McTighe and junior Anthony Martinez are the top two returning golfers.

Junior Tyler Knispel and sophomore Josh French are also in the top four while sophomores Tim Malkosky, Peyton Gatza and Bowen Gain, along

with freshmen Kayvon Crenshaw and Sean Knispel, will be battling for the next two spots to complete Plano’s top six.

Plano head coach Scott Smith knows he has to be patient with his young team.

“We have to get them repetition as much as possible, try to teach them the basics of the game, the etiquette and the rules and get them to understand there will be good days and there will be bad days,” Smith said. “It doesn’t matter if it is their first year or their second year or if they have been golfing for 20 years.”

Just one player, Joe Secor, got out of the Class 2A Mendota Regional, where Plano placed ninth as a team. Secor, along with Izzy Mendez, graduated

but left an impression on the returning golfers.

“Joe and Izzy and me always practiced together and they taught me some tricks here and there,” Martinez said. “[As a team], we just have to work hard and get our numbers low. If we work hard in practice and listen to coach, I think we will be a pretty good team.”

The first week of the season included two outings at Sandwich and a trimeet with fellow Interstate Eight Conference teams Peotone and Lisle.

Plano is at Aurora Central Catholic’s Charger Invite on Sept. 19, Genoa-Kingston’s Invite on Sept. 26 and LaSalle-Peru’s Invite on Oct. 3. The conference meet is scheduled for Sept. 28 at Wolf Creek Golf Course.

Girls return several talented players; boys led by senior McTighe

The talented golfer set the tone for this season after recording a hole-in-one at Cedardell Golf Club on Aug. 10.

“That’s how we roll around here – we start our seasons with hole-in-ones and off we go,” Plano head coach Tammy McGinnis

said. “Someone in [the pro shop] said, ‘Well, didn’t you set the bar high for yourself, Rylie?’ Absolutely not. This is how we do it.”

Loux should be used to doing big things for Plano. She is a three-time Class A state qualifier and All-Conference player in the Interstate Eight who is looking to not only qualify for state again, but to finish in the top 10. Last year, she placed 11th in the state, first at both the conference meet

and regional and second at the sectional overall.

Behind Loux is fellow senior and co-captain Arieanna Accidentale. “[Accidentale is] always just a couple strokes behind Rylie, but it’s fun to have an internal competition,” McGinnis said. “But both are very solid ... I expect – and I know they do too – to go to state this year as a team as opposed to just Rylie. Arieanna has missed

it by one or two strokes the last couple of years so she is hungry to get to state.”

The next two to watch out for are junior Ashley Martinez and sophomore Lexi Clark, followed by sophomore Shannen Paxton.

The other sophomore on the Reapers is Adela Martinez and there are also two freshmen, Madison Long and Camryn Rydzewski.

“We always seem to come in second – Lisle is always tough,” McGinnis said. “Lisle always has a solid five where we are looking at four, but we hope to stand strong there.”

Team setting sights on path to improvement Eight seniors return to provide leadership for Reapers

By CHRISTINE BOLIN DASCHER cbolin@kendallcountynow.com In Tom Dean’s first year as the Plano boys’ soccer head coach, the Reapers had no seniors on the roster and finished 3-16-1 overall and 2-8 in the Interstate Eight Conference last fall.

Now, with more experience and eight experienced seniors, Dean is sure this season will be much better.

“We have a good crop of seniors who have played together and a good crop of juniors and a good group of sophomores who are all going to going to augment

the team, and hopefully that will end up in a more successful year than last year,” Dean said. “We have a talented group. Everyone is a year more mature and that really shows physically. We have some individuals who are very talented with their feet who have really big hearts. Hopefully that will play out pretty well for us.”

Seniors looking to contribute on the field this year are midfielders Gerardo Barraza, Izaiah Avila, Hugo Nunez (five goals, three assists) and Willie Velasquez, defenders Noel Salas and Alexander McKie and midfielder/forwards Robert Jacobsen (five goals, one

assist) and Angel Avila (four goals, three assists).

“I believe we are more mature because we are all seniors now, and we are all stepping up into that role,” Barraza said. “It’s our last year and we want to make it a good one. I’m hoping this is the best year of the last four years.”

Leading the junior class is midfielder/forward Ivan Alanis, who led Plano in scoring last year with nine goals and four assists while landing a spot on the All-Conference team in the Interstate Eight. The other juniors on the Reapers are midfielders Luis Alcantar, Agustin Garcia, Julian

Moreno and defender Will Benson.

There are five sophomores on the team – goalie Trevor Scott (75 saves last year), midfielders Alban Hoti, Emmanuel Valles, Eric Nunez and defender/midfielder Omar Alanis.

A good starting goal for the Reapers this year is doubling the amount of conference wins from two to four. The season starts on Monday at Newark before a game with Genoa-Kingston on Tuesday and Somonauk’s Breakout Tournament on Aug. 29.

The first conference outing of the season is scheduled for Sept. 1 at Manteno. That will be followed by three straight league contests against Coal City, Westmont and

Herscher. “[Conference] should be strong again, and I’d like to get off the bottom [of the standings],” Dean said. “If we double our win total in conference to at least four, that will put us somewhere in the middle. Whether we are at the top of the middle or the bottom of the middle still is to be seen but I think we have the talent and ability to improve in our conference – or maybe at least surprise some people who aren’t prepared for what we could do.”

“Hopefully, we can at least get top half of the conference – there’s no reason not to,” Jacobsen added. “I can tell already we have a lot better team and we understand each other more.”

Woman, horse train for show jumping competition in Belgium

aylor Flury has a horse named Catania Saflo Z. “I did not breed her,” Flury said. “I got her when she was like 4 months of age.”

Since Flury did not breed her, she did not name her either. But she did give her a nickname.

“My nickname for her is Minnie Mouse,” she said. “If she’s fresh, she’ll squeal like a mouse so we called her Minnie Mouse.”

Minnie Mouse is 5 years old, which is young for a show jumper.

“She’s 5; most Olympic horses are 8 or 9,” Flury said. “She’s leading the country for the 5-year-olds.

“She’s just a really special horse, she’s got a big heart and she wants to be the winner.”

The same could be said for Flury herself.

Since she was a young girl, Taylor, a resident of rural Kendall County, wanted to train horses to be Olympic competitors in the show jumping competition. But when she was 15, that dream was threatened by what ended up being a medical issue she had since birth that had been misdiagnosed.

“I was born with a condition called chiari malformation. When I was like 9 or so, I was misdiagnosed as bipolar manic depressive,” Flury said. “I went to see a neurologist at 15.”

That neurologist pulled her off the medication she was on for the misdiagnosis and ordered an MRI where the medical issue was discovered.

“It’s where [my] cerebellum descended into my spinal cord,” she said. “My cerebellum went down to my second vertebra. It was basically killing my cerebellum.”

Flury did not have to have surgery, but chose to when the doctor explained the risks to her.

“My surgeon told me you don’t have to have the

Catania Saflo Z surgery, but if you hit your head the wrong way, you can cut off the [cerebellum],” she said. “My brain was so damaged I should barely have been able to walk. Mine was white because it wasn’t getting circulation.”

So Flury was 15 years old and was recovering from brain surgery. The recovery left her in the hospital for months, but also gave her a new outlook on life.

“The surgery was the best thing that ever happened to me,” she said.

“When you live in the hospital for six months, you realize it all comes into perspective. It was like a 9-month process before I could even basically leave the house.”

Janet Flury, Taylor Flury’s mother, explains how that changed things for her daughter.

“When Taylor had her brain surgery, it really only shifted us onto a different course,” she said.

“The horse industry breeders as a whole were really encouraging, helped her to realize success.

“When she had her surgeries, I think at that time she thought she might never ride again and if that was the case, she wanted to be able to breed horses.”

So the breeder, rider, Olympic dreamer was born. Today, at age 24, Flury rides at AliBoo Farm stable near Minooka. Her schedule is intense as she continues to pursue all her

everyday responsibilities.

She wakes up around 5:30 a.m.

“I am very hands-on,” she said. “I am the first one out there so I feed them, I turn them outside in the pastures. I clean their stalls.”

After she cares for the horses, it is time to exercise them.

“Usually by 8 a.m., I am riding. I ride from 8 to 4,” she said.

“On a typical day, I will ride anywhere from 8 to 11 horses, 30 to 45 minutes per horse.”

She said the younger horses get a little shorter workout than the older ones.

“I usually am done riding by 4:30, so then I am on to my next job: paperwork, talking to customers and then I am also going to school.”

Flury is pursuing a bachelor’s degree in business.

“I have two semesters of school left, I am taking 14 credit hours,” she said.

“The worst part is that I am a perfectionist.”

Since she cares for and

shows the horses as well as competing with them, she chose to attend an online university so she could continue to study no matter where she was. This was a blessing because she is trying to raise money to take her horse to Belgium to compete in the Young Horse Showjumping World Championships for horses aged 5 to 7 years. The competition is in September. To fund the trip – which requires getting both Flury and her horse Catania Saflo Z to Belgium – Flury has set up a Go-

FundMe page. As of Aug. 7, she has raised $6,955 of the $30,000 she hopes to raise.

The desire to go to the competition, which is an invite-only event and only two Americans per age group receive invitations every year, is to prove to the world that an American can breed, train and compete with a horse and win.

Joyce Ann (Voga) Bankson, 67, of Lake In The Hills, Illinois (formerly of Newark, IL) passed away August 12, 2015, at home after a courageous battle with cancer and her loving husband Terrye at her side.

She was born September 19, 1947, in Morris, IL, the daughter of Arlyn and Verdell (Sebby) Voga. Joyce grew up in the Newark area and graduated from Newark High School. She was employed at Union Special in Huntley, IL, for 38 years. Joyce married Terrye Bankson June 11, 2004.

She is survived by her husband, Terrye of Lake In The Hills; two brothers, Jerald (Myrna) Voga, Taft, TX and James Voga, Sandwich, IL; an uncle, Robert (Fern Marie) Sebby; nephews, Steven (Donna), Jeffry, Dan and John Voga, Brendan Flinn, Nicholas Heinz and Darren Voga; nieces, Ellyn (Donald) Heinz, Carolyn (Michael) Flinn, Ashley Voga, Melissa and Megan Flinn and Allie Heinz and numerous cousins.

Joyce was preceded in death by her parents; and brother, John Voga.

Funeral services will be private family only. Celebration of her life will be held at a later date.

Colin “Cole” Robert Coppert, 57, of Aurora, died suddenly Friday, August 7, 2015, at his home.

Colin was born August 27, 1957. He graduated from Oswego High School in 1975. He worked many years at Allsteel in Aurora. He went on to do carpenter work in the area. He enjoyed reading, gardening, and was a great music lover. He also loved traveling if he got the chance.

Colin is survived by his sister, Carrie (Robert) Dew of Yorkville; and one niece, Laurie Dew also of Yorkville. He leaves behind many friends and will be greatly missed.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and his sister, Gay Lynn in 2010.

Frank was united in marriage on February 15, 1947, in Aurora, IL to the former Helen Junkins and they spent the next 68 happy years together. He proudly served his country as a member of the United States Army. For his service during WWII, he was selected for one of Springfield’s first Honor

His friendly and outgoing nature and love of the outdoors combined perfectly with his devotion to his golf game and socializing with his many friends. Frank was an excellent woodworker and among his numerous creations were the toys that he annually made for children at Christmas.

He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, and uncle who will be deeply missed by his family and friends.

Holdiman, age 69, of Yorkville, IL, passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, August 11, 2015, at Rush-Copley Medical Center in Aurora, IL. She was born on April 11, 1946, in Sandwich, IL, the daughter of Guy E. and Hazel M. (Brainard) Smith.

Sandy was united in marriage in Yorkville, IL on May 11, 1974, to Clarence Holdiman and they spent the next 41 happy years together. She was a very active and lifetime member of the United Methodist Church of Plano in Plano, IL. Sandy was also a very active member of both the Women’s Auxiliary of the Yorkville American Legion Post #489 and Women of the Moose Chapter #1059 in Sandwich, IL. Sandy had a true servant’s heart and was always willing to help others in any way that she could. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and aunt who will be deeply missed by her family and friends.

She is survived by her husband, Clarence Holdiman of Yorkville, IL; her children, Brian (Michelle) Holdiman of Millbrook, IL and Beth (Jim) Ward of Yorkville, IL; three grandchildren, Bryce, Kendyll, and Quinn Ward; three brothers, Edward (Helen) Smith of Plano, IL, Jack (Joan) Smith of Pleasant Valley, NY, and Larry (Kathy) Smith of Plano, IL; her sister-in-law, Joanne Smith of Plano, IL; several nieces and nephews; as well as her granddogs, Captain and Morgan.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Guy and Hazel Smith; brother, Donald Smith; and a nephew.

Funeral services were held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 15, 2015, at the Larson-Nelson Funeral Home, 1617 N. Bridge St., Yorkville, IL with Pastor Kent Svendsen officiating. Interment followed in the Lincoln Memorial Park Cemetery, Aurora, IL. Visitation was from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Friday, August 14, 2015, at the Larson-Nelson Funeral Home in Yorkville, IL. His family members include his wife, Nancy; two daughters, Diane Gordon and Lynne Olson; two step-daughters, Jane Sickler and Sandra (Steve) McKinney; a step-son, Eric (Dawn) Sickler; eleven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and a brother, Fred Huntington.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother, William Huntington.

A memorial service will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 22, 2015, at First Baptist Church, 15 Oak Ave., Aurora; where a visitation will begin at 1:30 p.m. until the time of services.

Geralynn “Lynn” Marie Scheller, passed away on July 29, 2015, at the age of 51.

Lynn was born on November 10, 1963, to Ambrose and Judith Scheller in Dubuque, Iowa. She was one of eight children. Lynn graduated from Oswego High School in Oswego, Illinois in 1982.

Lynn was blessed with two children, Ricky and Sadye. She was a loving and supportive mother. Lynn was also a proud grandma to two granddaughters, Rilynn and Breckyn. She cher-

ished every minute spent with her children and grandchildren.

Lynn worked for Optimae in Chariton, Iowa, helping disabled individuals in the community to thrive. She was an avid gardener and loved to work in her garden.

She also loved all animals and enjoyed having pets around.

Keith Wheeler (R-Oswego) is accepting applications from interested parents, educators and community members to serve on his Education Advisory Council serving families in Illinois’ 50th District, which includes portions of Aurora, Batavia, Campton Hills, Elburn, Geneva, Montgomery, Oswego, Plano, St. Charles, Sugar Grove and Yorkville.

Wheeler’s Education Advisory Council will hold quarterly meetings throughout the year, with the first to be scheduled for September.

• A Sandwich man is facing charges of harassment by telephone and harassment through electronic communication in connection with an incident involving a Plano woman, Kendall County Court documents said.

According to reports, Seth D. Orczykowski, 26, of the 300 block of Wilshire Drive, is accused of posting obscene comments on a social media website and linking the victim’s account to a video of herself that she had earlier given him. He also is accused of making numerous calls and sending text messages to the victim’s phone, reports said.

Wet summer could be Anniversary: J. Robert and Marilyn Constantine problem for tomatoes “Gardeners are wondering if they are going to get a crop of red, ripe tomatoes because of the frequent rains across the state,” says Kelly Allsup, University of Illinois horticulture educator. “If you suspect disease, there are few signs to look for and what you can do about it.”

Septoria leaf spot is the most common of all the tomato diseases. The disease symptoms begin mid to late summer and start off as dark leaf spot the size of a pencil tip, surrounded by a yellow halo. The smaller spots advance to dark brown lesions with a purple border with lighter-colored centers.

This fungal disease attacks leaves, stems and sepals (the outer leaves of the flower) and spares the fruit. However, diseased and damaged leaves can cause fruit abortion and expose fruit to sunscald.

Early blight’s initial symptoms are small, dark, round spots (larger than Septoria leaf spots) that advance to reveal dark, brown concentric lesions. This fungal disease starts on the seeds or transplants and causes yellowing, dead leaf edges, and leaf drop. Leaves, stems and fruit are affected. The fruit has the same concentric ridges, which look like leather. In addition to tomatoes, peppers and eggplant can be infected.

To control leaf spot diseases on tomatoes, horticulturists recommend a two- to three-year crop rotation when the disease has been detected and removing infected plants to prevent fur-

ther spread.

Good cultural practices include the following: proper plant spacing and staking to ensure good air movement; reducing humidity by removing weeds; and mulching the soil. To prevent the spread of fungal diseases, do not work in the garden while the plants are wet.

Fungal pathogens can live in the soil for three to four years. All plant debris must be composted or tilled into the soil and all stakes and garden tools should be disinfected with alcohol or bleach solution. It is important to always find reputable sources of seeds as they, too, can be infected with leaf spot.

If fungicide sprays are going to be used, they should be used as a preventative treatment. Before deciding to do a curative spray, understand that leaf loss can be at 50 percent before there will be a loss in yield. To further prevent the spread, University of Illinois recommends a weekly spray of chemicals with the following active ingredients: chlorothalonil, copper, mancozeb and Maneb. These names will be listed on the label of the chemical container. Be sure to read the label and follow instructions exactly to achieve optimal control.

Peter was writing to “God’s elect… 2 who have been chosen according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, through the sanctifying work of the Spirit, for obedience to Jesus Christ and sprinkling by his blood.” (1 Peter 1:1-2). These are Christians.

Why should Peter need to warn the “elect” to be “sober” or “alert” about Satan if they could never fall? How can the devil be an “adversary” to those who are once saved always saved” If the elect are eternally secure with no possibility of falling from grace, what is Satan going to “devour”?

What does God say about this man-made doctrine of once saved, always saved? A child of God can deny the faith (1 Timothy 5:8, 12). The Spirit said a child of God can fall away from the faith (1 Timothy 4:1). Paul writes Timothy again stating that men “have gone astray from the truth” (2 Timothy 2:18). We are saved by grace, we have an opportunity to be obedient to His Word that we do not deserve, but because of His grace we can be saved if we obey His Word. But we can fall from grace because we did not continue to be obedient to His Word. “You have been severed from Christ, you who are seeking to be justified by law; you have fallen from grace.” (Galatians 5:4). A Christian can be “carried away by the error of the wicked” (2 Peter 3:17).

Yellow jackets are the ones that bother us the most during outdoor events, as they like to snack on the same foods we do. Sweet pop is a favorite.

One trick you might try is to actually feed them starting two or three days ahead of the event in an area well away from the picnic. They get used to finding an easy meal and it will take quite a while before zeroing in on the meal you have for the picnicgoers. Yellow jackets can sting repeatedly.

The next most likely to be ready to sting are the paper nest building wasps and hornets. They will leave you alone if you leave them alone, but will certainly sting if provoked.

Any of these insects will protect themselves when threatened and do so in great numbers.

These insects will typically die off in the fall with enough overwintering adults to start again the following year. Adults overwinter singularly in cracks and crevices and in naturally occurring spots in nature.

Lesser-known stinging insects include carpenter

bees (only the female when disturbed), found tunneling in wood and the giant cicada killer that only really stings its prey.

When these stinging insects pose a real threat to humans, control measures are warranted. Treating a nest can be very dangerous, so be well prepared and have a buddy system in place! (As always, read and follow label instructions.) If you just have found the nest and have not been bothered all summer, let nature take its course.

Those that have strong allergic reactions to a sting should talk with the family doctor about potential treatments.

All of these stinging insects are important to the insect world, our ecosystem and our food chain.

BRIEF Diabetes support group begins Aug. 25 at OSC

The Illinois Department of Public Health reports more than 827,000 adults in Illinois have been diagnosed with diabetes. Management of the disease requires lifestyle changes that can challenge patients and caregivers alike, but they are easier to make with education and support.

In August, University of Illinois Extension and the Oswego Senior Center will begin a new session of the “Living Well with Diabetes” support group.

“The overall goal is to offer social support and community education around the topic of lifestyle changes associated with a diabetes diagno-

sis,” said Laura Barr, University of Illinois Extension nutrition and wellness educator. “Meeting others facing similar situations can ease what may feel overwhelming now. Once patients and families feel informed, they are more comfortable with the nutrition and routine adjustments.”

The diabetes support group meets from 1 to 3 p.m., beginning on Tuesday, Aug. 25. This group will use the “Living Well with Diabetes” workbook.

While there is a lot of summer left, now is the time homeowners are discovering nests of a variety of flying, swarming and potentially stinging wasps and hornets in the home landscape. In nearly all cases, homeowners have been unaware that a nest even exists in the yard until one day when foliage starts to change color or the nest itself grows in size and becomes much more visible.

The more common paper nest building wasp builds a flat nest under the eve of the home or near the gable on the end of the home. Another wasp that can easily be spotted by the nest it builds is the mud dauber. You will see singular or multiple rows where mud was used to build the tunnels containing the eggs and food supply.

The bald face hornet builds a much more elaborate nest usually found in the canopy of a tree. Their nest resembles a mottled grey football. Once in a while a nest will be found attached to the home in an area seldom seen. Farther down on the ground, yellow jackets like to nest in abandoned rodent holes and runs in the soil beside building voids, cracks and crevices, which can be commonly found on homes.

September canning presentation set at Aurora Farmers Market SHAW MEDIA Whether you grow your own, or frequent your local farmers market, there is nothing like the taste of fresh, ripe produce.

“Like many others, this is my favorite time of the year – harvest time,” said Laura Barr, University of Illinois Extension nutrition and wellness educator. “I have ‘put up’ strawberry preserves, green beans, dill pickles, corn relish, tomato sauce and salsa with the fresh, abundant produce of the season.”

Barr is sharing samples and tips from projects like these during food preservation demonstrations with the Aurora Farmers Market this summer. Here are a few of her steps to success:

Produce selection

The timing for produce selection depends on what is ready and in abundance, and that should be in mind when harvesting from the garden or purchasing at the market.

“Choose the best pieces for preserving,” Barr said.

“Look for the ripest, firmest produce, with no visible bruising, signs of spoilage or insect damage. It may seem counter-intuitive, but those slightly flawed items can be used for table use

right away.”

Proper method

The plentiful harvest lasts a short time, but the fresh produce can be preserved by freezing, drying or canning.

“Choosing the method of preservation may seem tricky, but with a few scientific guidelines, the decision becomes simpler,” Barr said.

When freezing, vegetables and fruit lose texture because plant cells expand and burst, and when thawed, they become soft.

“The more water in the fruit, the more structure lost. For instance, if you freeze grapes and bananas and thaw them both, the grapes will be soft and the banana will hold its form,” Barr said. “Vegetables need to be blanched prior to freezing because it prevents enzyme actions which can cause loss of nutrients, texture, flavor, and appearance.”

Additionally, blanching – which is placing produce in boiling water for a short time and cooling quickly – removes dirt, destroys bacteria and softens the product for easier packing.

“Under-blanching acti-

vates enzymes, which make it worse than no blanching, and over-blanching destroys nutrients, color and flavor,” Barr explained.

A dehydrator is a great tool for removing moisture from product to make it safe and last longer.

“We can dry fruit, vegetables, herbs, beans, seeds and meat jerkies with proper methods and continue to enjoy the harvest into the winter months and beyond,” Barr said.

Canning is an effective method to customize produce like low-salt or no salt options. The two methods are hot-water bath and pressure canning determined by the pH – the percent hydrogen or acidity – of the product.

“It’s a science, and the procedures need to be followed according to each step as described in a tested-recipe. This ensures a safe product,” Barr said.

Getting started

For new preservers, Barr recommends a hot-water bath system as a good first choice method. Equipment includes a large cooking pot, Mason or Ball brand canning jars, canning jar lifter with rubber grips, stainless steel ladle, a canning funnel, kitchen tongs and bubble remover. Keeping an open and

Summer is a time for fun, food and relaxation, but it is also a time when foodborne illnesses increase, according to a University of Illinois Extension nutrition and wellness educator.

“Foodborne-related illnesses do increase during the summer months, primarily for two reasons. The reasons, however, may not be what one would typically think,” said Diane Reinhold.

In order to understand why foodborne illnesses occur, Reinhold explained that we first need to understand some of the science behind their causes. The two culprits responsible for most foodborne related illnesses are bacteria and viruses.

“Bacteria are naturally present throughout our environment and can be found almost everywhere. Under the right conditions, there is a never-ending threat of bacteria quickly multiplying to unsafe numbers,” said Reinhold, also a registered dietitian. “Viruses, on the other hand, such as norovirus, can spread directly from person to person or by an infected person who unknowingly contaminates food or drink prepared for others.

“Norovirus can survive for weeks on surfaces that it has contaminated,” she added.

Trinity bids farewell to youth director Trinity Church United Methodist in Yorkville recently said goodbye to Youth Director Clay Hougham and his family. Hougham has been the youth director for the last two years, initiating a youth band and taking the youth on several mission and fellowship trips. He has decided to leave to continue his education. New Life Church hosts Everest Day Camp

Everest Day Camp at New Life Church was a great adventure. Over 300 kids and volunteers had an incredible week together. Throughout the week, kids learned that God has the power to provide, heal, comfort, forgive and love. Through music, games, Bible adventures, crafts, imagination station and more, kids were led on a journey to discover more and more about Jesus every day. Volunteers had smiles on their faces and gave every bit of energy they had to the kids. Family Fest on Friday night was great fun as kids were able to share their experience with their parents.

SHAW MEDIA Fox Country Players will hold auditions for the musical “Oliver” on Aug. 27, 29 and 30 in the auditorium of Waubonsee Community College’s Sugar Grove Campus, Route 47 at Waubonsee Drive.

Adult auditions will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Aug. 27, and 1 to 5 p.m.

Aug. 29. Children are invited to audition from 1 to 5 p.m. Aug. 30.

Those auditioning should prepare a short song to sing and bring the sheet music along; an accompanist will be provided.

Cold readings from the script and a short dance will also be included in the audition process.
