In 2011, Hollywood glitz and glamour descended on the city of Plano as the Superman movie “Man of Steel” was filmed partly on location in the town of “Smallville.” Now, four years later, the film experience lives on for hundreds of people each year in the form of “Smallville Superfest.” This year proved no exception as the downtown area was filled with people enjoying the food booths, musical acts, craft vendors and the ever-popular zip line through downtown. Dozens of volunteers helped make the family-oriented event successful, helping to coordinate everything from the information booth to Fishing with the Mayor to car shows. The Little Rock-Fox Fire Department offered some cooling relief in the form of water bucket fights. For more photos, see page 7.

The fourth annual Back to School BASH is from 5 to 8:30 p.m. Friday, Aug. 21, at Plano High School in Reaper Stadium (rain location is the main gym) for Plano students and their families in prekindergarten through 12th grade. Kick off for the evening is Purple and White Night with football and soccer scrimmage games beginning at 5:30 p.m. Enjoy the bounce house, concessions, music and giveaways from community organizations. All Plano students will receive a free hot dog, chips and a drink. This event is sponsored by Plano Community Unit School District 88 in partnership with Kendall County Health Department, Nandra Family Practice, Kish Health Services, Chestnut Health System, Plano High School Thespians, Centennial Counseling, U of I Kendall Extension, Heartland Bank and Trust Company, Plano Music Boosters, Plano Youth Athletic Association, Plano Youth Tackle Football, DuPage Children’s Museum, Family Focus, PATT, Northern Illinois University, Waubonsee Community College and many others.
