Kendall County serves up season chock full of events

chools have closed their doors and children have an abundance of free time, which can only mean it’s summer. Thankfully, for children and parents alike, Kendall County is offering children special summer events and camps to keep their minds and bodies active.

Kid’s Connection at Oswego

All through the year, the Oswegoland Park District hosts Kid’s Connection, a recreational program that works in conjunction with School District 308.

Throughout the summer, as well as during the school year, kids will have the opportunity to play games, learn and keep active at locations like Wheatlands Elementary, Churchhill Elementary, Southberry Elementary and the Southpoint Park Distirct.

“It’s a before- and after-school program,” said Cheral Gerstung, coordinator of Early Childhood Special Projects at the Oswegoland Park Distirct. “And we have a summer camp which is a 12-hour-a-day program [with an] athletics mini camp and engineering program.”

Wesby’s children, Shemaiah, 9, Joshua, 6, and Faith, 5, all attend the Kid’s Connection and Jr. Kid’s Connection. According to Wesby, though the programs might be different between her children, they are together in one place and their activities often overlap.

“Having all three of them in one central location doing age appropriate things is a great thing,” Wesby said. “This year, their favorite part was going to Prairie Fest. They loved it so much they recreated it at home with their own snacks and their own games. They pretended to sell tickets and have rides. It was cute.”

Crownhart, age 81, a resident of Aurora, IL since 2005, formerly of Naperville, IL 19862005, passed away Friday, July 3, 2015, at his home with his family by his side. He was born to the late Fred and Miriam Crownhart on July 26, 1933, in Syracuse, NY. Carl is survived by his loving wife, Janette Ward Crownhart; his two children, Shari Frieders (Greg); Frederick Crownhart; his grandchildren, Samantha Kowalczyk (Alex); Jenna Ivkovich; Cheyenne Sincero; Sierra Crownhart; Nicholas Frieders; his sister and brother, Alice Delaurier (William) and Dan Crownhart.

Carl graduated in 1961 from Clarkson College and received a BA in Mechanical Engineering. He married his bride, Janette Ward, in 1958 in the First Presbyterian Church in Ogdensburg NY. Carl proudly served his country in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War where he was stationed at Thule Air Base, Greenland. He had a long successful career as a mechanical engineer.

His work in the aeronautics industry was instrumental as he was on the design team that developed the Lunar Excursion Module for the first Apollo Mission in 1969. Carl was considered a specialist in the application of electrical codes and standards. He sat on several committees for NEMA, where he helped set the national and international electrical equipment standards.

Carl was raised a Master Mason in 1977 and affiliated with Euclid Lodge No. 65 on July 18, 2002. He was exalted a Royal Arch Mason December 8, 2009 in Euclid Chapter No.13 Royal Arch Masons and served as Worshipful Master in 2013. Carl became a dedicated member of River Glen Presbyterian Church in 1986.

CAROL DHUSE Born: March 5, 1923 Died: July 4, 2015

Carol Virginia Kollman Dhuse, 92, left this Earth to live eternally with her Lord and Savior on Saturday, July 4, 2015.

She was born March 5, 1923, on the family farm south of Yorkville, the daughter of Oliver and Mabel (Dietrich) Kollman. Carol attended Cross Lutheran grade school and graduated from Yorkville High School in 1941. On August 31, 1941, Carol married Robert Dhuse, Sr. and they were blessed with 68 years together, until his passing in November of 2009. Carol and Bob farmed together, traveled and raised their family to know the Lord. Being a life long member of Cross Lutheran Church, Carol was involved in Ladies Aid, Choir, LWML and Bible Study groups.

She enjoyed being part of Home Extension, her work at the Yorkville National Bank and volunteering at Copley Hospital. Most of all, Carol loved her family.

Carol is survived by her three children, Diane (Gerry) Johnson, Janet Dhuse and Robert (Toni) Dhuse, Jr. all of Yorkville, IL; her sister, Patricia Brooks in California; ten grandchildren, Corey (Jen) Johnson, Tana (Jeff) Rice, Laird (Joey) Devick, Luke (Rachel) Schneider, Alissa (Josh) Bocek, Adam Cooper, Thera Cooper, Jenna Johnson, Kyle Dhuse and Jordann Dhuse; and twelve great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband.

Funeral Services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, July 9, 2015, at Cross Lutheran Church at 8609 Rt. 47 in Yorkville with Pastor Erik Gauss officiating. Burial will follow at Cross Lutheran Cemetery in Yorkville. Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, July 8, 2015, at the Church in Yorkville.

Donna was united in marriage on August 13, 1960 to Mr. Ronald E. Fannin and they spent the next 54 happy years together.

Mrs. Fannin was formerly employed for many years by CTS Knights in Sandwich.

She enjoyed cooking and going to garage sales. She was devoted to her family and loved nothing more than spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Donna had recently found a new love of her life, her dog, Daisy. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and aunt who will be deeply missed by her family and friends.

She is survived by her husband, Ron Fannin of Sheridan, IL; her children, Tony (Dawn LaGow) Fannin of Sheridan, IL and Bill Fannin of Sheridan, IL; her grandchildren, Stephanie (Brad Hardekopf) Fannin of Sandwich, IL and Steven (Brooke

THOMAS B. FRAHM Born: March 17, 1943 Died: June 28, 2015

Thomas B. Frahm died June 28, 2015, after a long battle with pancreatic cancer.

Tom was born March 17, 1943, in Park Ridge, Illinois. He graduated from the Rochester Institute of Technology, and afterwards joined the family printing business, BerGlad Service, in Park Ridge, Illinois. More recently, Tom was the well respected owner of Fidelity Limousine in Chicago. He served in the U.S. Army, and was an active member in the Yorkville Congregational Church.

Tom loved the game of hockey as a player, coach and fan. His annual backyard ice rink during his time as a resident of Arlington Heights is remembered by many. Tom had a passion for gourmet cooking, with breakfast crepes as his specialty.

Tom is preceded in death by his brother, Paul; and his parents, Gladys and Bernie Frahm.

Tom is survived by Susan, his wife of 44 years; a brother, Jim Frahm of Wisconsin; his children, Jennifer (Charles) Jones, Jeffrey Frahm; and grandson, Spencer Jones.

She was born on July 31, 1935, to Shelty and Emma Jones in Plano Illinois. Jean loved to bake, read, and play Canasta with the Ladies. She was a devoted Chicago Cubs, Chicago Bears, and Chicago Blackhawks and Bulls fan. She loved spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Joan Walkup Matthiesen, age 89, of Yorkville, IL, passed away on Saturday, July 4, 2015, at Rosewood Care Center in St. Charles, IL. She was born on February 11, 1926, in Chicago, IL the daughter of Clarence and Pearl (Langdon) Leiting.

Joan was united in marriage in 1947 to Mr. Raymond Walkup and they spent many happy years together until his passing in 1989.

She was then united in marriage to Mr. Earl Matthiesen who preceded her in death in 2007.

Joan was a loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother who will be deeply missed by her family.

She is survived by her children, Pamela (John) Reese of Aurora, IL and Jonathan Walkup of Milwakee, WI; her grandchildren, Chad Reese of Aurora, IL, Ashlee (Mike) Garcia of Aurora, IL, and Jessica Walkup of Crystal Lake, IL; as well as her great-grandchildren, Reese and Matthew Garcia.

Explore museums through Passport program Local museums throughout the Fox Valley, including Oswego’s historic Little White School Museum and the Kendall County Forest Preserve District’s Laws of Nature Museum in Yorkville, invite children and their parents to embark on a quest this summer to find fun facts, mysterious stories, amazing outdoors, and unbelievable history right here in their backyards.

The 24th annual Passport to Adventure Program offers an open invitation to the many activities that

local museums provide to enrich residents’ lives and communities.

This year’s program is underway and runs through Labor Day. At each location, children can receive a stamp in their Passport booklet.

Families are invited to fill their Passports with as many stamps as they can.

Children can explore all the wonders that local museums and nature centers have to offer, including art, history and living history, science, games, and nature. Many sites have designed special activities

for children who participate in the program.

The program is designed for children ages 4 to 12. Passports can be picked up at any of the 67 participating museums, nature centers, or libraries.

Chastin B. Pawson, born August 18th 1989, was a passenger in a tragic auto accident and entered through the gates of Heaven on June 28th 2015.

He was embraced by God and welcomed by his late Grandfather, Gerald E. Pawson; and Grandmother, Kay D. Woody (Capanash).

He is survived by parents, Laura Pawson (Joshua Thrush) of Sandwich and Bryant Pawson (Dina Broches) of Bristol; Grandmother, Carrie Pawson of Sandwich; Uncle, Jay Woody of Bristol; Aunt, Neva Janeteas of Sandwich; Girlfriend, Jordan Molkentine of Plano; and several cousins.

Chastin attended Sandwich High school and Waubonsee College. He was employed as a manager at Q-Bar in Plano where he bartended. He was also a talented photographer. Chastin was an animal welfare advocate and adored his adopted dog “Elsie.” He loved hanging out with friends, sports, travel and adventure. Chastin loved life. His smile

Savario “Sam” Simmons, 23, of Montgomery, IL passed away suddenly on June 28, 2015.

He was born on September 5, 1991, in Garden Grove, California.

He graduated from Oswego East High School and later went on to Illinois Welding School. He recently worked at Nikro, Jimmy Johns and Q Bar in Plano. He was loved by many and will be deeply missed.

He is survived by his parents, Gina M. DeMarco and Jeremy Borowski; grandmother, Debra DeMarco; aunts and uncles, Joseph (Dea) DeMarco, Savario (Janet) DeMarco, John (Amanda) DeMarco, Paul DeMarco, Patrick (Sylvia) DeMarco, Angela DeMarco and Jay (Jonnie) DeMarco; as well as 15 loving cousins and countless friends.

Sheriff adds mounted patrol unit Deputies will patrol parks, events, more SHAW MEDIA The Kendall County Sheriff’s Office has added an auxiliary mounted patrol unit, according to a news release from the department.

The unit is comprised of three deputies and their horses and can be used to patrol parks and neighborhoods.

Mounted deputies may be seen at large spectator events throughout the county.

They work closely with the Kendall County Emergency Management Agency and are particularly effective in conducting missing person searches, especially in wooded terrain that inhibits the use of vehicles. The unit functions as a result of tremendous community support and generosity, with volunteers

Collectively, the three deputies have 97 years of riding experience.

Spears is also a full-time Oswego police officer who has served since 2003. Spears rides a 20-year-old Paint named JoJo. Benson rides a 13-year-old Mule named Reba. Benson rides a 7-yearold Bayon Quarterhorse named Koda.

COURT CASES • Hyo Min Ahn, 28, of Palmer Drive, Bolingbrook, is facing theft charges in connection with incidents between August and October 2013 at a business in Yorkville, Kendall County court documents said. Ahn is accused of obtaining unauthorized control of property belonging to the business. A warrant was issued and bond was set at $10,000.

• Daniel E. Perkins, 39, of Madison Street, Oswego, was charged with aggravated kidnapping with a firearm and aggravated sexual assault with a firearm in connection with an incident on June 30.

Bond was set at $1 million and a court date was set for July 9.

• Donna L. Brooks, 61, of Lincoln Station Drive, Oswego, was charged with unlawful possession of cannabis with intent to deliver in connection with an incident on May 13.

Bond was set at $25,000 and a court date was set for July 27.

• A felony case against Eric J. Ziarko, of Pheasant Chase, Plainfield, was continued to July 29. Ziarko is facing charges of drug-induced homicide by knowingly delivering methadone, a controlled substance, to a victim who later died after taking the drug, court documents said. The incident occurred between Dec. 5 and 6, 2014.

• A hearing was set for July 29 in the case of Susan A. Bedenk, 57, of Washington Street, Serena. Bedenk is charged with aggravated DUI,

a special Class 2 felony. According to court documents, Bedenk drove a vehicle while her blood alcohol level was 0.08 or more and her actions resulted in the death of one person and injuries to another. The collision occurred on April 21, 2014, on Route 52 east of Brisbon Road.

• Kenneth F. Newsome, 19, of Avalon Lane, Montgomery, is facing charges of aggravated possession of a stolen firearm, a Class X felony. According to court documents, Newsome possessed not less than six but no more than 10 firearms at the same time or within a two-year period with knowledge that the firearms had been stolen. The original charges were filed in December 2014. A warrant was issued and bond was set at $150,000.

• Troy Bearden, 22, of Sexton Street, Aurora, was charged with aggravated battery to a merchant, a Class 3 felony. According to court documents, Bearden had been detained on suspicion of retail theft, and committed battery to a store loss-prevention employee by grabbing the victim’s throat.

Bond was set at $20,000 and a court date of July 29 was set.

• Kenny M. King, 24, of Springbrook Trail, Oswego, was charged with forgery, after he signed another person’s name on a bail bond, according to court documents. A warrant was issued and bond was set at $50,000.

• Ian Brooks, 27, of Lin-

coln Station Drive, Oswego, was charged with unlawful possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver. According to court documents, Brooks is accused of possessing a substance containing cocaine. Bond was set at $50,000 and a court date was set for July 29.

• Rick A. Hurst, 54, of Royal Drive, Montgomery, was charged with unlawful delivery of a controlled substance. According to court documents, Hurst possessed between 15 and 100 grams of a substance containing cocaine. Bond was set at $100,000 and a court date was set for Sept. 3.

• Jesse W. Klingberg, 27, of Maple Avenue, Downers Grove, is facing charges of

• Deashon T. Fultz, 24, of Kane Street, Aurora, was charged with unlawful possession and unlawful delivery of a controlled substance.

Fultz is accused of possessing a substance containing cocaine. An Aug. 6 court date was set.

• Andrew E. Wysocki, 26, of Marquette Road, Joliet, was charged June 20 with unlawful delivery of cannabis. Bond was set at $25,000 and a court date was set for July 6.

Blackberry Golf Inc. filed a lawsuit in Kendall County Circuit Court against James R. Campbell on June 24. According to court filings, the company is seeking a tort action claim for at least $1 million. The plaintiff claims that Campbell was the manager of the Blackberry Oaks Golf Course in Bristol from 1993 until Dec. 16,

2014, and during that time he is accused of taking funds from the business. Campbell, 50, of Reva Lane, Sandwich, is facing 23 counts on theft charges in Kendall County in connection with the incident. A case management conference in the civil matter was set for Sept.

18. A court date for the criminal charges is set for Aug. 3.

Summer classes, Mighty Explorers at Yorkville

Cheyne Charles of Oswego has been taking her daughters, Taylor, 11 and Jordyn, 7, to Kids Connections for four years. She said she appreciated that the park district makes use of the gyms of local elementary schools, which means a larger space for children as opposed to a smaller playground. She also appreciated how the park district keeps them active with special trips.

“They can go to a gym and play basketball and larger games than in a day care center,” Charles said. “We’re part of the summer program right now, so they have different field trips. They’ve gone to movies, roller skating, plus they get to the civic center and go swimming twice a day. It’s been great, the hours work for me.”

“Our Mighty Explorers is a camp meant for kids ages 5 to 7,” said Shay Remus, Superintendent of Parks and Recreation for Yorkville.

“These classes are a weekly theme each week. We’ll make crafts, read books and do some really creative stuff with the kids, like ‘I Spy’ and ‘Mad Scientist.’”

Rex Slocum, 5, of Yorkville, said he appreciated the classes on water safety. The chance to swim was also a bonus.

“I was excited to wake up every morning to go to Safety Town, and I was sad when it was over,” Rex said. “My favorite part was learning

about water safety because I love swimming and I always want to stay safe near the water.”

Summer enrichment at the Oswego YMCA

The Oswego YMCA at 160 E. Washington St. runs a summer camp at Camp Hudson, 160 East Washington near downtown, from 6:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. weekdays through Aug. 14, according to Shellee McCullum, Youth and Family director.

“We have activity camp where we do a themed weekly activity,” McCullum said. “It’s a structured curriculum. It’s got physical activities, a literacy component, games, arts and crafts and fields every Wednesday.

There is a very interesting psychology experiment where you trick people into either smiling or frowning without their knowing it (by telling them to hold a pencil either in their teeth, to make them smile, or with their pursed lips, to make them frown), and while they hold that facial position you tell them a joke. Those who are holding the smile usually rate the joke as being funnier, presumably because they are already halfway laughing to start with. The moral of the experiment, if experiments can be said to have a moral, is that our bodies often take the lead in making us feel happy or sad, or calm or anxious. Droopy, lackadaisical posture will make you feel defeated while standing up tall and strong will make you feel like a winner. So smile, even when you don’t feel much like smiling, or perhaps especially when you don’t feel much like smiling. And an added benefit to smiling is that it tends to spread the happiness. Have an attitude and a countenance that is worth catching.

There are many beneficial insects and pathogens in the home landscape that can help gardeners manage destructive insect populations without ever opening the pesticide cabinet. Common to the yard are insect predators, parasitic wasps and natural pathogens that all work to our advantage.

Some insects provide immediate control like lady bugs that feed on aphids.

There are others, like the parasitic wasp that lays its eggs on or inside an insect pest that later emerge to find additional pests to become hosts to their eggs.

Predator insects can have an appetite for all forms of the pest, often eating eggs, young adults and adult forms of the insect.

Natural pathogens could be fungi, bacteria and nematodes. These can attack the larvae or caterpillar stages above or below ground.

Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) is an example. Cabbage worms and the tomato hornworm are common targets in the vegetable garden. The natural rise and fall of lawn insects, like sod webworm, that live in the soil can be attributed to natural pathogens, too. With all the wet weather we have been experiencing, bacteria and fungi are doing very well.

With beneficial insects, the goal is to invite and keep them in your yard so they are there when an outbreak of destructive insects occurs.

DOWN THE GARDEN PATH Richard Hentschel Gardeners can initially introduce lady bugs, for example, but without something to eat to keep them in the landscape, they move away to find something to eat elsewhere. One approach is to plant what is called trap crops or trap plants. These plants are very attractive to destructive insects, which then are available to the predators. These plants are never treated with an insecticide. Later when there is an outbreak in the garden or on a shrub, predators are there to take care of the problem. Trap crops are typically placed at the edge of the garden or nearby. Gardeners also can augment existing populations by introducing additional predators to help out those already in the garden and landscape.

A more passive approach would be to make sure your garden contains flowers that those natural enemies are drawn to. Plants in the carrot, aster, pea and mustard families are good examples.

The carrot family contains several of our herbs we use, including dill and fennel, and the aster family has several of our flowers, such as coneflower, coreopsis, and cosmos. The mustard family has the mustards, sweet

Biological management of destructive insects then involves a wide range of naturally occurring enemies, which together can manage insect populations. If there is still a need to use a pesticide, use one that is safe for the predators. An example of one that is not friendly is a miticide, making no distinction between a predator mite and a destructive one. Bt is a natural pesticide that can control specific worms without harming desirable moths and butterflies. In all cases, when there seems to be a problem in the landscape or garden, be sure to identify the insect first to be sure that is the one actually doing the damage. Predator insects also have different stages that may look like they are the ones doing the damage.

Youth develop skills with community and 4-H volunteers Dozens of local kids and teens joined Kendall County 4-H in June for a diverse line-up of summer enrichment opportunities through University of Illinois Extension.

Led by local volunteers, June workshops focused on a variety of 4-H project areas, including animal care, foods, horticulture, welding and visual arts.

“We appreciate all of our volunteers for sharing their valuable time and expertise through our 4-H summer workshop series,” said Kim Eisnaugle, 4-H Youth Development Program Coordinator for Kendall County.

“Whether the participating youth were 4-H’ers preparing for the fair or community members trying new things and developing new skills, these fantastic volunteers helped make their summer more special.”

Four Seasons Summer Series continues in July Registration is open for two of the University of Illinois Extension’s Four Seasons Gardening programs, which focus on environmental stewardship and yard landscape. Each program will be led by Extension experts and presented via teleconference at county offices.

Horticulture Educator Sonja Lallemand will lead “Where the Wild Things Grow – Native Plants” at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, July 14, at the Extention office in Yorkville. Suburban gardens tie our homes to the surrounding landscape, provide an outlet for artistic expression, are a source for natural beauty, and offer refuge from a hectic world. This presentation will introduce ideas on designing your landscape with Illinois native plants that nurture and feed wildlife, bring residents joy and require minimal care.

“Don’t Blame the Camera: How to Take Better Landscape Photos” will be led by the Extension’s Chris Tidrick.

Whether using a digital SLR, a point-and-shoot camera or even a cell phone, Tidrick will teach the basic techniques of great garden photography at 1:30 p.m.

Each class is $10 per person.

KENDALL COUNTY FAIR KING & QUEEN CONTEST The Kendall County Fair will select its King & Queen this year. Fair dates are July 30 - August 2. Vote for one candidate for 25¢. Votes may be taken or mailed to the Kendall County Extension Office at 7775B Route 47, Yorkville, IL 60560. Just tape your 25¢ to the ballot and drop it in the mail. If you wish to vote multiple times, just write how many votes for each candidate and include the proper amount of money. FOOD TIPS Celebrate ice cream during July After splashing in the pool, rooting on your favorite team or playing in the backyard, nothing beats the end of a long summer day like a cool, classic treat.

July is National Ice Cream Month, and aficionados agree that when it comes to the best tasting ice cream, “fresh” is the must-have ingredient. Cherry Vanilla Crumble Squares Q 1 cup old-fashioned oats Q ½ cup whole-wheat flour Q 1⁄3 cup firmly packed light brown sugar Q ¼ cup butter, melted Q 1 package (12 ounces) frozen dark sweet cherries, thawed and well drained Q 1⁄3 cup all fruit black cherry fruit spread Q 4 cups Blue Bunny Sweet Freedom Cherry Vanilla Ice Cream, softened In medium bowl, combine oats, flour, brown sugar and butter; mix thoroughly. Remove ½ cup and set aside; pour remaining crumb mixture in an 8-by-8-inch baking dish.

Coarsely chop cherries and transfer to medium bowl. Add fruit spread, stirring to blend.

Pour over crust, gently spreading evenly in bottom.

Spoon ice cream over top, gently spreading evenly.

Sprinkle with reserved crumb mixture.

Cover and freeze at least 8 hours. Cut into squares to serve.

Healthy gratin By the editors of RELISH MAGAZINE “Gratin” or “au gratin” refers to a dish that has been sprinkled with bread crumbs or grated cheese and browned. In this casserole, a layer of sliced tomatoes is arranged over the top before it’s sprinkled with mild Muenster cheese. As the gratin bakes, the cheese melts into the tomatoes and turns a rich golden brown.

When the plate comes out of the oven, the filling will be juicy, but after a few minutes the rice absorbs some of the liquid. The rest can be spooned over each portion. To complete the menu, serve leafy greens tossed in a tangy Dijon vinaigrette and a loaf of crusty whole-grain bread.

Brown Rice, Broccoli and Spinach Gratin Q 3 cups bite-size broccoli florets Q 2 cups cooked brown rice Q 1 (10-ounce) package frozen chopped spinach, thawed and water squeezed out Q 3 tablespoons grated Parmesan cheese Q ¾ teaspoon dried crushed rosemary Q ½ teaspoon salt Q 1⁄8 teaspoon coarse ground black pepper Q 1 cup tomato juice Q ½ cup water Q 2 (about 4-ounce) tomatoes, thinly sliced Q 1 cup (4 ounces) shredded Muenster cheese Preheat oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit.

Coat a 10-inch pie plate with cooking spray.

Steam broccoli in steamer rack over boiling water until bright green and just tender, about 4 minutes.

In large bowl, combine rice, broccoli, spinach, Parmesan, rosemary, salt and pepper. Spoon into pie plate. Pour tomato juice and water over top. Arrange tomatoes over top. Sprinkle with Muenster.

Bake 25 minutes or until golden brown.

Let stand a few minutes before serving. Serves 4 to 6.

n the last decade, we’ve seen the rise of YouTube toning gurus, Crossfit devotees and Zumba instructors attempting to fuse exercising with a dance party.

Have you ever wondered which of these trends are old workouts rearing their heads and what past workouts are buried deep in the archives of health history? Join us in taking a look at the last six decades’ biggest fitness trends.

1950s The ’50s were all about rhythmic exercises, jumping jacks, calisthenics and the “Five Basic Exercises.” Jumping jacks were developed during World War II in order to improve the dismal cardiovascular shape of soldiers, and the movement entered the mainstream in the coming decade. “Five Basic Exercises” required participants to alternate between five exercises for 15 minutes three times a week. (Sounds kind of like circuit training, huh?) But nothing quite caught flame like the hula hoop. In the first year that hula hoops were distributed in the U.S., Americans bought 100 million hoola hoops.

1960s What a decade for fitness. In the ’60s, we re-popularized massage belts from the 1850s that apparently vibrated away areas of unwanted fat; we ordered many a trim twist rotating board to whittle away at that waist; and we participated in stretch classes designed for the working woman. Diet soda and artificial sugar became popular ways of eating healthier (oh, the horror!), but Weight Watchers was founded in 1963 (so it’s not all bad).

1970s Thankfully, we traded in massage belts for body building and jazzercise in the ’70s.

Granted, we did see the advent of the sauna belt trim jeans (which were to be worn while performing “magic torso” exercises), but this passing fad was short-lived.

invented in the 1960s by NASA’s Dr. Kenneth Cooper, no one really cared until Jane Fonda stepped onto the workout scene with her new book and videos. Aside from aerobics, indoor cross-country ski machines and racquetball clubs were other popular ways we got fit in the ’80s.

1990s Tae kwon do aficionado Billy Blanks started tae bo, a high-intensity form of martial art designed for anyone trying to get into shape, and we can thank the ’90s for starting the bootcamp trend that still isn’t over. And how many of us still remember the Cindy Crawford “Shape Your Body” video?

2000s At the turn of the century, our “staying fit” options exploded. From street dance with the cool kids to pilates, kickboxing and more weight-lifting exercises for women, a whole new world of fitness was at our fingertips.

Workouts were more scientifically based and heart rate became an essential measure of just how effective your work was. Let us also remember the introduction of the iPod to your cardio routine. Goodbye skipping CD players, we don’t miss you.

Now Halfway through this decade and we’ve already seen the rise of P90x, YouTube fitness bloggers, H.I.I.T., crossfit, tabata, bodyweight training and endless types of group fitness classes. There are a couple of arising themes so far: we tend to look down on total cardio bunnies and instead emphasize toning circuits or cardio that involves a fluctuating heart rate.

But who’s to tell what’s to come in the rest of this decade.

Getting the best harvest from your garden

resh herbs are packed with delectable taste and aroma, adding piquancy and nutrition to your cooking. They also are fantastic as refreshing iced herbal tea or natural health remedies. Yet another advantage is that most herbs grow rapidly and are easy to care for, making them a great project for novice gardeners. Just be sure to harvest their leaves the right way, so you’ll get them at the peak of freshness and flavor. Here is our guide.

Top tile trends to dress up floors New designs, styles and technologies are making tile the most versatile and accessible flooring material. Here are some top tile trends to consider for your interior design project: The look of real wood with a rustic finish. Many of the larger-format faux wood tiles mimic the look of real hardwood floors. Less expensive and more durable than real wood, these tile floors are practical yet beautiful choices for active households with children and pets. Details evoke the character of real wood, right down to the nails.

Longer tile planks. While standard square tile sizes will always have their place in home décor, rectangular tiles are gaining popularity. New 12-by-24inch tiles are a hot choice in bathrooms and 6-by-36-inch tiles or 8-inch by 8-feet planks are a favorite for living areas.

Poured concrete look. While concrete is a trendy design material right now, it’s not practical for every household or application.

New tile styles create the look of poured or stained concrete at a fraction of the cost, and with all the durability, versatility and ease associated with tile. Tile options range from long rectangular 8-by-18-inch or 12-by-24-inch planks to 18-by-18-inch squares.

Tiles are rectified – the edge is cut completely straight – and grout joints are very narrow to further create the look of seamless concrete.

Herb-picking tools You’ll need only a few basic tools for harvesting herbs: your hands and fingernails for leaves like basil or mint that are to be pinched off, a sharp pair of scissors or a small knife, and secateurs (hand pruners) for tougher stems such as rosemary or sage. When you plan to collect large quantities, a wicker basket will come in handy as well.

The right time to harvest Harvest your herbs on a dry day, early in the morning, but after the dew has evaporated, since dampness may cause them to mold before you are ready to use them. Pluck leaves prior to the plant’s flowering (“bolting”) to ward off the development of unpleasant bitterness.

New growth The majority of herb plants are very forgiving. Snipping a few sprigs to add interest to tonight’s supper

won’t harm them but in fact make them healthier by encouraging strong new growth. Just limit the cutting to no more than 1⁄3 of the plant’s foliage. Chives and lavender, however, should be cut to within a ½ to an inch from the ground.

Cilantro, dill and garden cress are the exception that prove the rule mentioned above, since they will not regrow once cut. Lovers of these aromatics are advised to practice succession planting. This means starting the seeds in several batches, spaced out over time, so that when you have harvested one crop, there will be others just about to mature.

Leaf removal Cut off parsley leaves together with their stems, scissoring just before where they are attached to the main stalk. There’s no need to go to the trouble of painstakingly separating the leaves if they are to be used in cooking; the stems, chopped fine, will impart plenty of zest and Vitamin A. Basil should be nipped off with your finger and thumb, or a small pair of scissors, just above where a

pair of leaves emerges from the stalk. This will allow new growth to form, whereas if you leave a length of bare stem, it will wither away.

Planting herbs Maybe you haven’t gotten around to planting herbs yet, let alone harvesting. No worries. Chervil, cilantro dill, garlic, chives, parsley and watercress all will thrive when sown in mid to late summer. Prepare a welcoming bed of moist, well-drained soil, protected from the harshest rays of the sun with shade cloth until the seedlings have become well established.

Most herbs will develop the best flavor in your backyard’s sunniest spot. If that coincides with where you are planning to build your concrete patio, there is a happy solution. Set up an herb container garden.

Planters full of fragrant herbage make an border for paved backyard areas like a patio or terrace. This is especially convenient when your outdoor space includes a fire pit or a spot for a grill. Then you will have the luxury of harvesting herbs “on demand” for delightful summer meals.

By DAVID LANZAFAME dlanzafame@shawmedia.com Businesses in the small strip mall at the northeast corner of Route 34 and Route 47 in Yorkville are feeling blocked off from their customers as a result of the continuing construction at the intersection.

Contractors for the Illinois Department of Transportation recently installed a center median on Route 34 past the center that prevents eastbound motorists from making lefthand turns into the strip mall.

To Andie Groff, owner of the Chocolate Shoppe at 175 East, W. Veterans Parkway, the median might as well be a wall with the number of customers she’s lost in recent weeks.

“In front of our store, there used to be a median that you could drive over and turn into our strip mall,” said Groff. “Now with this new plan of widening the road, they added a high concrete median that you can’t drive on and now there’s no entrance into our strip mall.”

While the strip mall and its businesses are not completely cut off from potential traffic, the only way to get in is through an access road through the nearby BP gas station off of Route 47. This path isn’t too difficult for locals who know how to get around, according to Groff. But she said it causes confusion for those unfamiliar with the landscape, which leads to lost business.

“We’ve received a few complaints over the years, and have tried to work with the businesses to clarify information and manage issues as they come up,” Olson said.

Among those officials she hopes to connect with are Plano Mayor Bob Hausler, Kendall County Board member Scott Gryder, Yorkville Mayor Gary Golinski, Montgomery Village President Matt Brolley and Sandwich Mayor Rick Olson.

“Our hope was just to have a frank conversation about how we move forward,” Johnson said. “My goal is to establish a task force and have each of the mayors decide who would serve on that from their village.”

“I don’t think it’s competitive, but the farther west that the termination point is, Metra can serve all of the communities.”

Plano neighbors working together Old-fashioned barn raising subject of grandfather’s photo

By KRISTY LAWRIE GRAVLIN Shaw Media correspondent As you may know, or at least surmise, I have access to many of the photographs my grandfather, Royal Edgar (or R.E. or Ed) Lincoln took during his career as a photographer in Plano.

He especially enjoyed photographing local scenery, and the changes he saw in Plano’s downtown area. He also took the opportunity to assist those who were creating new methods to supply the public with new items by photographing such items.

As far as I’ve seen, his are the only pictures of the “Tape Seed” Factory where young women made sure you could purchase a length of paper tape with the seeds already on it. All the purchaser had to do was to lay the tape on the prepared garden and cover the tape with dirt. Before long, plants would show themselves.

My favorite picture was of a toilet float the maker wanted to patent. It looked like the metal floats I remember from years ago.

But I don’t know who the inventor was, and I fear I “played away” all the extra copies of the photo.

Today’s photo is one that has always been another of my favorites.

Just in case you are too young to recognize the scene – one which rarely, if ever, happens any more – this is not a barn which lost its sides in a big windstorm. Nor is it a jungle gym for men who want to show off their climbing ability.

It is an old-fashioned barn raising.

Back in the early years of our community, it was common for friends and neighbors to meet on a nice summer day to help a farmer who had no barn and had invited all who wanted to partake of the “fun” to come to his farm to help. He had decided on what kind and size of barn he wanted to have.

He had gone to the local lumber yard and, using his general plan, purchased and had the necessary lumber and nails, and roofing materials delivered to his farm.

He had notified his friends and neighbors, especially those young enough to be willing to climb to the high points of the developing barn. They chose a day and all showed

up early in the morning.

Each one, and their oldenough boys, brought their hammers and any other tools they thought might be needed. They began working as soon as possible and it was not long before a change in the landscape was seen.

Their wives came along, too, in order to prepare enough food for the hardworking barn builders, no doubt bringing a specialty dish to share though the family would supply most of the food. Children came along because there was no one at home to watch them … and they wanted in on the fun, too!

They came as early as they could get their own stock fed and milked, knowing they had a long day ahead of them. But also knowing it would be a day to remember.

We can guess the calendar reads mid-summer of the 1890s – or thereabouts.

By 1900, the numbers of barn raisings dropped off.

There were fewer who still needed a barn by then.

They also came knowing their friendly efforts would be returned when they had need of help from their neighbors, whether it would be a barn raising or some smaller job requiring a few to assist at any one time.

Together they could make life in the rural area, which was often very hot in the summer and very cold in the winter – and where few had enough money to hire the number of workers needed, work together for the common good.

I carefully counted the men who were there to work – four times – and got four different answers.

It’s a harder job than one might think, even when one has a good clear copy of the picture from which to work. Some of the men are pretty high up and some of those look as if they are not in the least worried about where they are.

Look at the man at the center high point, calmly leaning on the post, his hands in his pockets, and his ankles crossed. On the far left a young man dangles, while another young man one post farther to the left looks like he may be readying himself for a nap.

A few men are in suitcoats, and/or dress hats, and perhaps wearing ties.

Others have not worn their best clothes for this day of hard work.

There seem to be 11 wives in the group. Their white dresses indicate the heat they expect by lunchtime. Four young ladies, no longer children, but with an eye out for a good farmer to marry no doubt, are perched with one such man, possibly, above the handful of youngsters. They are carefully being sure the young man in their midst is properly attended.

Each person in the group will have work to do this day, down to the very youngest, be it bringing something over, or just staying out of the way.

I’ve found three men who seem to attract particular attention. At the bottom of the center post, standing inside the barn and difficult to notice at first, is a man who may be in charge.

At the right corner of the barn is a shorter man in a dark shirt and suit and a derby hat. Beside him is a man who may be in charge of the workers today. He is tall and slender and came to work in his bib overalls.

Not all of the workers will be well-experienced and some will need direction to learn their tasks.

We can see some important things about the barn, which will give us information about what it will eventually look like.

You’ve no doubt noticed the cement foundation. We can see two windows, or small doors, in the cement.

But they are not big enough for a worker to use.

members are scheduled to meet again next Tuesday, July 14, to further discuss the possibility of re-forming, and Shanks says the group needs to move quickly since they have less than a year to organize.

“Each member district would then have a decision on whether or not they would be participants in a new cooperative at this next meeting,” she said.

Shanks said she doesn’t really know what will happen because each member district has unique needs.

“They really are talking very seriously about a new cooperative structure; who will participate I don’t know at this point in time,” Shanks said, adding that the smaller school districts might benefit the most from continuing a co-op.

Aside from forming a new

cooperative, the member districts could also choose to do special education completely within their districts or they could leave and join other coops in the area, according to Shanks.

“They need to make a decision in July … this month,” she said. “I will be waiting in anticipation with everybody else.”

Shanks said under a new co-op, the districts would run the diagnostic type of programming or instructional skills programming. The co-op could then take on on life-skills and vocational types of programming or transition programming and specialized autism programming.

“Right now we’re a very centralized co-op. The proposed structure was more of a low incident-type of cooperative,” she said, adding that that means having the cooperative do programs and services that would involve life skills types of programming.

“I don’t think it’s competitive but the farther west that the termination point is, Metra can serve all the communities,” he said. “I think it would be beneficial to serve all the communities.”

Hausler added that getting voters to join the RTA could be a tough sell.

“It would have to be sold to the voters and if it would create economic development and be good for each community then that would be the selling points – not only the ridership but the economic development that it would create,” Hausler said.

He added that he is confident that extending Metra service would be good for economic development.

“It would bring people other than residents of the city to the downtown,” he said. “Most of the communities to our east that have a Metra station usually have some other type of development around it.”

Metra is currently in the environmental impact phase of the study that Carrie Hansen, interim Oswego village administrator, said is the first of three phases for the extension on planning.

The engineering study has just begun, she said, and takes about 18 months to two years to complete. Should the Metra Board of Directors approve the environmental impact study, they would move on to design and land acquisition and then, finally, with approval, begin construction.

In May, the Metra Board

of Directors voted to add Yorkville to the environmental engineering study. The board awarded a contract to Muller and Muller, Ltd. to provide design engineering services for the BNSF Service Extension-Yorkville Station.

The contact for engineering services was slated to cost $557,635, according to information from board’s meeting packet.

Metra received a $7.5 million federal earmark over 10 years ago to study the possibility of extending BNSF service into Kendall County.

According to Metra, the project is funded in the Capital Program by two federal grants dedicated solely to the BNSF extension and requires no local match.

In 2012, Metra’s Board of Directors approved two professional services contract awards to engineering firms to study the feasibility of extending service from the current end of the line in Aurora to Oswego. Additional scope items included a new overnight train storage yard and two station and parking facilities in Montgomery and Oswego. The yard facility would consist of tracks, maintenance platforms, a crew welfare building, lighting, access roads and parking, according to Metra.

Metra’s records indicate that the engineering firm’s preliminary investigation of the proposed Oswego yard site revealed that it was inadequate to satisfy Metra’s yard needs and they began investigating alternate sites which included Yorkville.

Hansen said the village would like to see the environmental phase of the plan move forward in earnest after stopping and starting for years.

“There certainly is movement out here to make sure that we at least study to determine whether or not we are going to proceed any further,” she said.

Does this County awards loan to Yorkville arms manufacturer barn look familiar?

I think this is where they will put large double sliding doors so machinery or large, animals can go in and out when need be. A dirt ramp will be built to allow those using it to get in easily.

On the right hand end of the barn, at the top, is another area that’s open in the middle. I think this is where the farmer will put his hay and straw into the haymow, probably in big forkfuls now, but eventually in bales as the machinery to create them comes to be.

On the ground on both the left and back-right corners of the barn you can see the owner has purchased a good quantity of lumber so the men will have what they need to build the barn.

Now, you have made it through what I know, and I am wondering if anyone recognizes this barn. Do you have this picture in your home collection? Do you recognize the shape and size of the barn? There are a lot of trees behind the barn. My first thought was this might be near a creek.

But there were a lot more groves of trees once. Maybe they are now gone to allow more fields.

The Kendall County Board voted Tuesday night to approve a loan to Yanos Hagos and partners Ernest Johnson, and Armando Velasquez for Civilian Force Arms in an amount of $90,000 at 2.9 percent interest rate and five year amortization.

The loan dollars would come from the county’s economic development revolving loan fund. The revolving loan fund was originally funded through a State of Illinois grant to foster job creation in the county.

The company is located in Yorkville in the Fox Industrial Park, Hagos explained, where they assemble customized AR-15s and other weapons.

The company’s website says Hagos, who is from Sudan, is an U.S. Army veteran who received a Purple Heart after being wounded by a rocket propelled grenade while fighting in the Iraq War in 2004.

Approval of the loan came by a nine-vote majority with board member John Purcell voting “present.”

Hagos explained that they are a “class 7 FFL manufacturer” and they make “AR-15s, AR-10s and we’re getting into 19-11s.”

“We manufacture weapons,” he told the board.

Board member Dan Koukol, who chairs the board’s economic development committee, voiced support for granting the loan.

“He’s an arms dealer/manufacturer,” Koukol said. “He’s going to add some employees, add some jobs and be a good part of the community.”

Andrez Beltran, the county’s

economic development and special projects coordinator, said he believes that Hagos plans to add nine more employees to his current staff of six people.

Beltran said the company wants to manufacture parts for the guns that they currently assemble.

“Mostly they are doing customization of AR-15s from manufactures,” he said, adding that the guns are assembled in Yorkville.

“There is a stock design and people put their own tweaks on it and there is different types of metal for different parts,” he said. “It seems to be a very high quality weapon. They are getting into customizing their own parts. Currently, they are sourcing them and making a custom weapon from it.”

When asked after the meeting why he abstained, Purcell said that he just had a philosophical object to government giving out loans.

In a related matter, the board also approved a revolving fund loan totaling $80,000 at 2.1 percent interest to Robert and Debra Dearborn for the Countryside Café on U.S. Route 34 in Sandwich. The couple plans to use the funds to open a restaurant in a former Pizza Hut. Approval came in a majority of eight votes vote with Purcell voting present and Bob Davidson abstaining. There was no discussion by the board before they voted to approve the loan.

Before the vote to move forward with replacing Laken, the board considered a proposal by Davidson to delay the hiring and instead assign the duties of the director to Jim Smiley, the county’s facilities management director.

Davidson’s proposal came in the form of a letter he sent to the County Board’s Finance Committee as well as Chairman John Shaw and Jeff Wilkins, the county’s administrator.

The letter, dated July 1, says Davidson wanted to combine the two positions of facilities management director and technology services director under one position headed by Smiley.

Davidson said he discussed the issue with Smiley who felt he could take on the extra responsibilities.

“Jim (Smiley) said that he thought it was possible if … some reassignment of duties of staff and technology services and GIS Mapping departments were also included,” Davidson wrote. “We believe this would streamline operations of these two departments to better facilitate operations, coordination of projects, and day to day management of work orders and provide better customer service.”

Davidson notes Laken’s current salary is $109,790 plus benefits and that combining the office would save the county money.

“It’s even more important than just the IT because all of our public safety systems things are run off what the IT director does,” Gryder said.

Purcell said that appreciated Davidson “thinking outside the box” to save the county money but noted that if they give Smiley the added responsibilities they would have to increase his pay.

“I think that that individual would require a substantial bump in compensation and I’m not talking $1,000 to $2,000 – I think it could be $8,000 to $10,000,” Purcell said.

He added that at the end of the day it could be a wash since Smiley might need an assistant and additional staff members to support him.

“What would the actual changes be if you’re going to add a staff member and an administrative person?”

Purcell said. “Might you be better off paying more money … to get somebody who is an expert in technology versus somebody who is not an expert in technology.”

Wehrli noted that while there are a lot of monetary reasons not to hire a new IT director for the county he also wanted to make sure the department could be run properly.

County to repay $148,000 in wrong reimbursed sales tax

Sandwich man faces aggravated DUI after collision injures motorcyclist PLANO RECORD SANDWICH – A Sandwich man faces aggravated driving under the influence and other criminal charges in connection with a crash early Saturday near Sandwich that sent a Naperville man to the hospital with critical injuries.

David A. Brown, 40, of

the 900 block of East Railroad Street in Sandwich, faces charges of aggravated driving under the influence, David A. leaving the Brown scene of a personal injury accident, reckless driving, driving with a

revoked license, failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident, improper lane use, operating an uninsured vehicle and failure to report an accident, according to a news release from the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office.

Sheriff’s deputies, along with Hinckley and Somonauk police officials, were called to Creek Road west of

Somonauk Road shortly before 2 a.m. Saturday for a report of a collision.

Witnesses told police that Brown, who had been driving a black 1998 Ford Expedition, was swerving from ditch to ditch while heading east on Creek Road, the news release said.

Two motorcyclists traveling west were forced to lay

down their motorcycles on the north side of the road to avoid the Ford Expedition.

Police said Brown struck a third motorcyclist, Douglas B. Koehler, 32, of the 2200 block of Petworth Court in Naperville.

Koehler was taken to Valley West Hospital and later flown to Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital in Down-

er’s Grove with “critical injuries,” according to the news release.

Police said Brown left the scene of the collision without calling for help. Investigators later found him at a nearby residence.

Brown remained at the DeKalb County Jail on $100,000 bond as of Saturday afternoon.

by Plano police PLANO RECORD A man wanted on warrants from Kentucky is facing charges after a weekend incident in Plano, police said.

Jeffrey M. Heth, 32, of 45th Road, Leland, was charged with resisting a peace officer after he attempted to run from officers at about 9:05 a.m. Friday in the 200 block of West North Street, Plano police said.

He was found to be wanted on warrants from Kentucky on charges of failure to appear in court and a probation violation.

He was taken to the Kendall County jail in Yorkville where he was to be held on the Kentucky warrants, police said.

According to court documents, Christensen went outside her home on three occasions in late June. As a condition of her release, she was to remain at her home at all times except for medical appointments.

After she left her home on June 28, her husband called 911 and an ambulance was sent to the home.

Christensen was taken to an area hospital for observation.

A Kendall County court judge agreed to revoke the bond of a Montgomery woman accused of trying to kill her children, court documents said.

A judge agreed to revoke the bond of Pamela J. Christensen, 47, of Patron Lane, Montgomery, after she was found to have left her home on three occasions in June.

Christensen was charged

in September 2014 of multiple counts of attempted murder, aggravated battery and unlawful re- Pamela J. straint. Her Christensen bond was originally set at $1 million with GPS monitoring. That bond was reduced to $750,000 on May 11, 2015, with GPS home confinement.

Sandwich Opera House plans season Tribute performers, bands to fill venue’s 2015-16 calendar SANDWICH RECORD A wave of nostalgia may be behind the success of tribute bands, and the new season at the Sandwich Opera House reflects that trend.

Seven of the 16 acts coming to the venue in the new season will be tribute bands or performers.

“We started last year adding the tribute packages because everyone else around us was doing it,” Opera House Executive Director Sandy Black said.

Tribute acts played so well in previous seasons that it made sense to bring in more for the coming year, Black added.

“In the past few years, we have had Doug Church in as Elvis and he filled the place,” she said. “Every time we bring a Patsy Cline in, we pack the house.”

Black said the opera house strives to offer a variety of acts each year, with the most popular being country, bluegrass and pop.

The addition this year of “The Baby Boomer Comedy Show” adds to that, Black said.

“It’s good, clean comedy, too,” Black said.

The Sandwich Opera House kicks off its 2015-16 season on Sept. 26 with Shining Star – A Tribute to Earth, Wind and Fire – the magic, the music, the versatility, the vocals, the energy, the essence, the spirit and the songs of the ’70s and ’80s as only these pros can duplicate.

Three performances in October include “Close to You: The Music of the Carpenters” at 8 p.m. Oct. 10 and Brian McCullough’s Countywide/Roy Orbison Tribute at 4 p.m. Oct. 18.

The new year starts off on Jan. 30 with Southern Drawl Band, a melting pot of sound, attitude and entertainment spanning the boundaries of country, Southern rock, tropical rock and bluegrass.

American jazz singer Alexis Cole will sing Disney love songs, up-tempo and sultry numbers and

scat solos from jazz standards and blues to celebrate Valentine’s Day weekend on Feb. 13.

February also will bring The Prairie Brass Band, a 25-piece brass band from Arlington Heights, to the stage. The band features traditional British brass band instrumentation. The performance is Feb. 20.

The Special Consensus Bluegrass Band, a four-person acoustic bluegrass band with an attitude, returns to the Opera House stage on March 5. It last appeared on stage in March 1987 in Cottonpatch Gospel.

On March 19, Dakota Swings Bobby Darin will feature Bobby Darin’s life in song. Dakota Horvath often is compared to Harry Connick Jr., Michael Bublé, Bobby Darin and Frank Sinatra.

Singer-songwriter and vocalist Ericson Holt is considered similar to Jackson Browne with a little more swagger – a cross between Jerry Lee Lewis, Little Richard and Fats Domino.

Ericson performs with a lot of blues influence and a little New Orleans flare on April 9. He will be joined on stage by Jennifer Lowe of “The Covergirls Violin Show.”

“The Baby Boomer Comedy Show” with Kent Rader and Jan McInnes on April 23 will feature topics including family, children,

do-it-yourself projects, dieting and aging.

Kuba and Rebecca take the Opera House stage on May 7.

Rebecca is a singer of country, Broadway, pop, jazz and gospel with Kuba playing vibraphone, drums, guitar, violin, theramin and the kalimba.

Rounding out the season will be “Mod Rod Stewart and the Piano Man,” a tribute by Cliff Tartaglia as Rod Stewart and The Piano Man played by Nick Psyhogios on June 4.

The Reaper Volleyball Summer Camp will be held July 27-30 for incoming 4th12th graders at Plano High School. The camp will be divided into three sessions: 8:30 to 10 a.m. (4th-6th grade), 10 to 11:30 a.m. (7th-8th grade) and Noon to 2 p.m. (9th-12th grade).

The goal of camp is to prepare players for the volleyball season, build on skills as well as teach the basics to a first-year volleyball players. The camp will teach fundamentals, skills, and most of all fun.

With the win, Crestwood (10-5) solidified its grasp on second in the South and can continue to improve its stranglehold with a doubleheader versus the Westmont Red Sox on Sunday.

Oswego, however, dropped into third place in the North, 1.5 games behind division-leading Crystal Lake. The Cats will stay there for the time being, as they do not return to the diamond until July 9 against one of its newest opponents, Team Acceleration. First pitch is set for 7:30 p.m. at Jackie’s Field of Dreams.

“You really can’t (prepare differently); we just have to go out and play our game,” Miller said. “It’s

similar to the Oak Lawn game, where we didn’t know what we were getting there. We’ve just got to concentrate and do the things that we do best. We need hit the ball, we need to field the ball, and if we do that, and our pitching is good, we’re going to be in every game. “(Thursday night), it wasn’t there. We made too many physical mistakes, and we weren’t hitting the ball, and it just adds up. It’s just frustrating. We really kind of needed this game to keep pace in the division.

We’re all kind of bunched together anyway, but it would have really helped us.”

Notes: Oswego is expected to send two players to the College Veteran All-Star game at Madison Meadows in Lombard on Wednesday, with the first pitch scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Following its game against Team Acceleration, the Cats will host the Chicago Angels for an afternoon doubleheader July 11.

Plano football takes multiple college visits

The Plano football team hit the college camp circuit hard in the month of June. The Reapers and head coach Brad Kunz went to nearly 10 camps over the past month. That included stops as close as Northern Illinois University in DeKalb and as far as the University of Miami in Florida.

This is something the Reapers have never really done before.

Sure, they’ve been to camps here and there but never this many in one month.

“We are just trying to get as much exposure as possible for the kids,” Kunz said. “It’s definitely a blast for me, and the kids seem to have a lot of fun. There’s been about four to eight guys going to camp. Obviously, it costs money, so not everyone has gone to all the camps. It’s a good bonding experience and it makes them really work. I think they’ve really enjoyed the experience working with college coaches.”

The Reapers’ first stop – and perhaps Kunz’ favorite – was at the Al Golden Football Camp at the University of Miami, where Kunz played football in college.

Quarterback Tyler Ward, his younger brother, Cameron, and Jay Winter represented Plano in this camp, which took place on the weekend of June 6-7.

The two players’ families decided to make a vacation out of it, and the camp also gave Kunz a chance to catch up with former Miami players and coaches.

“It was a blast,” Kunz said. “I knew I wanted to be a part of this and when I brought it up at a team gathering, I was surprised they wanted to go.”

On June 10, the Reapers were a part of Purdue University’s camp in West Layfayette, Indiana. On June 13, several players visited the campus of Northwestern University – where former Plano football player Joe Jones plays.

“When everyone saw us, they said, ‘Hey, that’s Joe Jones’ school,” Kunz said.

June 17 saw a visit to a camp at NIU and June 19 saw a visit to

Iowa State for its Friday Night Lights camp. Tommy Brown was a part of the offensive line vs. defensive line camp on June 21 at NIU while Ward was at the Ann Arbor’s Aerial Assault Elite Quarterback Training camp at the University of Michigan.

“This is the most star-studded camp,” Kunz said. “There are a lot of big names from this camp. This was a good experience (for Ward).”

The Reapers then headed to Iowa City for the University of Iowa’s

Friday Night Lights camp on June 26. The focus was on quarterbacks, running backs, tight ends, wide receivers, linebackers and defensive backs. Brown, Winter, Ward and Israel Adeoti represented Plano.

Just two days later on June 28, four more Reapers were a part of Western Illinois University’s camp, which was held in Chicago.

The last stop on the Reaper camp tour was at Illinois State University on June 30. Seven Reapers were a part of this, includ-

ing Brown, whose brother, Wes, plays football for the Redbirds.

Kunz knows the Reapers did well for themselves while at these camps and represented Plano well.

“It was definitely worth it. The kids got a lot out of it,” Kunz said.

“They were up against a lot of kids from (Class) 7A and 8A schools. We did a lot of networking and made a lot of connections and really got our name out there. I’m hoping to get more kids to play in college.”

It might be too early for several of the Reapers to make their college choices just yet, but players like Sergio Chavez, an incoming senior, and Adeoti, an incoming junior, perhaps had some coaches paying more attention to them.

Chavez is a kicker for the Reapers. He is also a three-sport athlete who also plays basketball and football. He is set to go to a camp for kickers later this month. Kunz said programs like NIU, ISU and WIU are interested in him.

“He hasn’t kicked since last November, so he’s working on getting his rhythm back,” Kunz said.

In the spring, Adeoti qualified for the Class 2A state tournament in track and field in the 100-meter dash. He was the LaSalle-Peru Sectional champion in that event. He was also a part of the 4x200-meter relay team that qualified for state.

“He had a really good track season, and (with football), he’s really opened some eyes,” Kunz said. “It’s really cool to see the success he’s had. He’s really worked hard at it.”

After a busy and fun month of June, the Reapers will be spending a lot more time in Plano in July.

They will be a part of summer practices and will host the Reaper Up Youth Camp (Kunz said it’s not too late to sign up) in the third week of July.

Several of the Reapers will then be a part of West Aurora’s “Battle of the Big Butts” – an annual event for offensive and defensive linemen on July 16.

On July 18, Plano will be at Bolingbrook’s 7-on-7 – Kunz said this is one of the best tournaments in the area.

If July goes as well as June did, Kunz will be one happy coach.

“The effort and attendance has been wonderful,” Kunz said. “I’m really proud of our guys.”

Oswego (9-7, 8-7) entered the week having won five of its previous six contests, including three straight in which it had outscored opponents 29-3. In each of those victories, the Cats had allowed just one run per game, but they were a little more generous to the opposition in their latest outing.

Interial was effective in his support role, surrendering just two runs – both coming in the fifth on RBI singles – and four hits, while fanning six in 3 2-3 innings.

“We had a rough start.

Dom had a hard time locating the ball and throwing strikes, and we got behind early,” Cats field manager Todd Miller said. “We mis-

played several balls in the field and made some throwing errors. It’s just frustrating (with) plays like that; it just kind of added to everything, with Dom having trouble with the strike zone and then, them getting hits.

“It takes the wind out of your sails when you’re down 6-0 like that. Kendall held them and gave up two runs. Other than (the first two innings), it’s a 2-2 game, or it’s a lot closer than that, but it’s just a little bit deflating.”

While the Panthers found a way to make contact at the plate, the Cats struggled to do so, managing six hits on the night despite a total of 33 during their three-game winning streak. On Thursday, their first run came in

the third inning on a sacrifice fly from right fielder Bobby Smith (North Central College) that plated second baseman Adam Lipscomb (Aurora University).

Lipscomb added an RBI-single in the fourth inning against left-handed starter Matt Strzelczyk, who also pitched the Panthers to an 11-5 victory over the Cats in the teams’ respective season-opener on June 4.

“We didn’t hit well,” Miller said. “We had six hits, and we just didn’t get the hit when we needed it. (Strzelczyk) threw strikes, but I wasn’t a fan of the umpire’s) zone, and I know some of our hitters weren’t either, but you know, you can’t let that bother you, because he’s calling it both ways.”

Strzelczyk went seven strong innings, allowing those two runs and four hits, while walking four and fanning six. He was spelled by a pair of pitchers who conceded two hits to preserve the win.

The Cats’ relief staff was similarly effective, as lefthander Andy Grunewald (Park University), righthander Austin Kapusinski (College of DuPage), left-hander Bailey Watros (Waubonsee Community College), and right-hander Kelse Gengler (North Central College) each tossed an inning, respectively, to end the game, surrendering one hit and one walk and striking out one as a group.
