Capstone classes added at PHS Advanced Placement offerings aimed at boosting college skills

news@kendallcountynow.com Plano High School has the distinction of being one of only 17 high schools in the state to be approved to have students take Advanced Placement Capstone courses, said Superintendent Dr. Hector Garcia at the recent Plano School Board meeting.

Capstone students are more prepared in scholarly research and project management than their non-Capstone peers, which benefits them when they enter college, Garcia said.

And they are considered to be varsity scholars and future leaders, he added.

Laurel Mateyka, assistant principal for Curriculum and Instruction at the high school, said skills developed in two courses – AP Seminar and AP Research – will prepare students to handle college coursework more successfully than peers who only take “traditional” courses.

And teachers of the Capstone classes go through much more intensive training than those who teach other Advanced Placement courses, she noted.

To choose students eligible for the Capstone courses, Mateyka said school officials reviewed the honors and Advanced Placement course enrollments for the completed ninth-grade students.

They also review the list of the top 20 to 30 ninth-grade students based on cumulative and weighted grade point average.

A diverse list was then developed that matched the demographic enrollment of the school and or the overall AP program. Students must be enrolled in at least one honors and or Advanced Placement course.

Mateyka said discipline-specific mentors and consultants can guide students’ formulation of research questions and interpretation of data. They can also provide feedback to strengthen the student’s voice in the academic paper.

“We are very proud of the diversity in our AP programs and in this course,” she said.

Selection for the two-year program is made during sophomore year, although recruitment begins during freshman year.

Mateyka said this is the first year for Plano to offer the AP Seminar course and they have not yet offered the AP Research course. It will be offered starting next year, she added.

Students must commit to both courses. The Seminar course is completed in their junior year and the Research

course in their senior year.

Mateyka said 20 students completed the entire recruitment process as Capstone Seminar candidates for 2016-17 and all 20 were selected from a class of 170 students.

She said 24 students continued through the recruitment process as Capstone Research candidates and 23 students were selected. One student did not complete the course. They were selected from a class of 184 students.

60th Anniversary

CORRECTION An article in last Thursday’s edition of the Plano Record said the City of Plano saved on the cost of its employee health insurance over last year’s cost through Blue Cross Blue Shield. However, the cost of the policy will be higher than last year.

Mayor Bob Hausler said the city’s cost for the coming year was expected to be up 7 percent over last year’s cost. But the city’s agent, Robert M. Bryce, employee benefits consultant from Infinity Benefits of Rolling Meadows, was able to get the increase reduced to 5 percent and finally down to a 3.74 percent increase, according to Hausler.

This saved the city nearly 4 percent over the original expected increase, Hausler said.

The city’s cost for medical insurance through Blue Cross Blue Shield for the coming year will be $856,196.

Employees pay about 4.5 percent of the insurance cost, Hausler said, adding that the city provides insurance for only full-time employees from all departments.

Larry Nelson, owner of Nelson Multimedia, spoke during the Kendall Country Board meeting March 1.

Nelson told the board that his lawsuit is not against the county but against the county coroner’s office.

“This surveillance video that is in question, and I think all of you are aware of it, it is what it is and it’s not going to change,” Nelson said.

“I would hope that we don’t go down the same road through the FOIA and through the courts because, somehow, I think at the end the county board and me and you, the taxpayers, are going to get stuck with the bill for the lawyer end of it and I don’t think that’s right.”

He added that the interests of the County Board are different than those of the coroner, who is an independent officeholder.

“I think the person who has signed on to defend the coroner is the state’s attorney office and the state’s attorney,” he said. “I don’t see how he can serve two masters in defending the coroner and representing the best interests of the Kendall County Board and the taxpayers in this case,” Nelson said.

Nelson also made reference to the fact that he heard the Illinois State Police were interviewing county employees.

“Also, recently, one of your employees, was interviewed by the state police I understand – the man in charge of building and grounds. He is an employee of yours. He is not an employee of the county coroner or the state’s attorney’s office, yet it would be my guess when the state police went in to interview him they said, ‘We’re here at the request of the coroner and the state’s attorney, I’m here to interview.’”

“That’s an unfair position to put that employee in and any other employee of the county board. They work for you,” Nelson said.

“Generally in situations of a conflict of interest we are called in to have an unbiased approach to look into any criminal allegations. It’s an active investigation and there’s not a whole lot I can comment on.”

Illinois State Police District 5 Investigations Commander Nelson added that there are comments on the surveillance video about things the state’s attorney’s office has said.

He said the lawsuit could end up involving the state’s attorney, coroner and county board.

“You might need three attorneys before it’s over,” Nelson said.

When asked by the media if they had a public comment on what Nelson said, board members declined.

Weis added that he didn’t have anything to say.

“From the state’s attorney’s side we don’t comment on pending litigation and we’ve been told by the state police that we are not to make any comments, so we will not,” he said.

“I guess mum’s the word here,” County Board Chairman John Shaw said after no one on the board spoke up.

When asked if the board would appoint a special prosecutor to represent the coroner’s office, Shaw said he didn’t know.

“I have no idea if we are going to go with a special prosecutor,” Shaw said.

“I’ll defer to Mr. Weis on that.”

Weis added, “I have nothing in front of me to request a special prosecutor at this time so I have nothing at this point. And just so it’s clear I don’t choose to represent the coroner, that’s my statutory duty to represent the coroner.”

The Illinois State Police have been conducting a criminal investigation of the Kendall County Coroner’s Office over the past several weeks, State Police Lt. Richard Wilk, District 5 Investigations Commander, has confirmed.

Wilk declined to discuss the nature of the investigation because he said the agency does not comment on active investigations.

“It is a criminal investigation,” he confirmed.

The investigation began in February at the request of County Coroner Ken Toftoy, according to Wilk.

“Generally in situations of a conflict of interest we are called in to have an unbiased approach to look into any criminal allegations,” Wilk said. “It’s an active investigation and there’s not a whole lot I can comment on. We need to find evidence and that will dictate the direction we take.”

Toftoy declined to comment when questioned about the investigation.

According to Kendall County State’s Attorney Eric Weis, the investigation involves a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request Nelson Multimedia of Plano filed with Toftoy’s office in January. After the coroner’s office denied the FOIA request, the company filed a lawsuit in the 23rd Judicial Circuit on Feb. 8.

Nelson Multimedia owns the radio station WSPY-FM. The lawsuit seeks electronic copies of “all of the audio and video recorded from the closed circuit monitoring equipment and system(s) used in the lobby and reception area, the Main Entrance and Sally Port Entrance of the Kendall County Coroner’s Office (in Yorkville) between June 1, 2015 and August 31, 2015.”

According to the lawsuit, it ap-

pears Toftoy requested the investigation of his office before he sent a letter of denial to Nelson Multimedia on Feb. 4.

The letter says the ongoing police investigation is one of the reasons the FOIA request was denied.

The lawsuit includes a copy of the letter of denial from Toftoy’s office.

The letter states that Nelson Multimedia filed the FOIA request on Jan. 28 and the coroner’s office requested a five-day extension that is allowed under the Freedom of Information Act. The letter signed by Jacquie Purcell, chief deputy coroner, states that the records are exempt from disclosure because the records contain “private information and the disclosure of this private information is not required by any other provision of the Freedom of Information Act.” “The requested records contain personal information, the disclosure of which would constitute a clearly unwarranted invasion of personal privacy,” according to the letter. The letter goes on to say that the material is the subject of a police investigation and cannot be turned over to Nelson Multimedia.

The letter concludes that turning over the records would “obstruct an ongoing criminal investigation by the agency that is the recipient of the request.”

Under the FOIA Act, Nelson Multimedia has the option of having the denial reviewed by the Illinois Attorney General’s Public Access Counselor.

On March 9, 1898, the Kendall County Record’s Oswego correspondent Lorenzo Rank noted that a group on its way to the Klondike gold fields in Canada had steamed through Chicago by rail: “The outfit went through Chicago one day last week, and consisted of 539 reindeer and 118 Laps, including the women and children.”

Reindeer? Laplanders? Yep, right here in northern Illinois.

As you may recall, gold was discovered in the late 1890s up in the Klondike River region of Canada’s Yukon Territory, resulting in the Klondike Gold Rush, and more than a few years later, “Sergeant Preston of the Yukon,” who with his great lead dog King went sledding along on both radio and TV. Back to the reindeer. It took a year for word of the gold strike to get back to the Lower 48 States, but when it did the media created a firestorm of gold lust. Tens of thousands of Americans and Canadians headed to the Yukon, either to Washington State and from there north along the coast to Juneau and then on through Alaska to Skagway, or overland through Canada where Edmonton in British Columbia was the jumping off place for the gold fields.

Thousands of miners took those two routes on their way to the isolated arctic wilderness where the gold fields were located.

Soon, tales of starving miners began sharing the front pages of newspapers down in the Lower 48 with stories of striking it rich, stories that caught the eye of politicians in Washington, D.C. Proving that panic-stricken responses to real and imagined crises are not only a 21st Century thing, and at the behest of determined lobbying

The Kendall County State’s Attorney’s Office has charged Ramon Flores, 25, of Joliet, with 14 counts of criminal sexual assault, all Class 1 felonies, and 11 counts of aggravated criminal sexual abuse, all Class 2 felonies.

Flores was taken into custody by the U.S. Marshals Service Great Lakes Regional Fugitive Task Force without incident March 2, according to the sheriff’s office.

Flores appeared before a judge who set his bond at $2 million, with 10 percent ($200,000) required to apply for release.

He remains in custody at the Kendall County jail in Yorkville.

The investigation that led to Flores’ arrest began Feb. 7 when county sheriff’s deputies took a report concerning criminal sexual assault of a female juvenile by an acquaintance on several occasions.

The alleged assaults took place approximately four years ago at a farm located in the 13000 block of McKanna Road, unincorporated Minooka, according to the sheriff’s office.

“I would like to commend the Kendall County Sheriff’s Office, in conjunction with other law enforcement agencies, for quickly apprehending Flores.

Cooperation between law enforcement agencies, like in this case, is vital to ensuring that wanted fugitives are taken off our street,” said Kendall County State’s Attorney Eric Weis.

“In many instances, the AP program enrollment for schools and districts doesn’t come close to matching the overall school demographic for minority and or low-income students.

Plano High School is very proud that our overall AP program demographics, including this highly selective Capstone course sequence, accurately reflects the overall school demographics,” she said.

She said the Capstone courses are relatively new for College Board, the organization that administers the Advanced Placement program, so they and Plano officials are in the early stages of developing the program.

Many colleges are also developing scholarships specifically for Capstone students.

For the student selection process, the initial list of recruits was determined by enrollment in honors and AP courses, the student’s current GPA and overall rank, as well as how

they scored on a written essay and an interview with the selection team.

Selection team members, who also reviewed the essays, included Mateyka, Capstone Seminar teacher Jessica Dellorto and Capstone Research teacher Karen Franks.

Mateyka said Dellorto customizes her summer enrichment program to meet student needs based on what they determine are areas of deficit in a student’s writing on the essay, divergent thinking on the essay and interview, ability to express themselves in the essay and during the interview, and strengths and weaknesses shown during the interview.

“The full benefit to students is still unknown at this time. At this point, most students and families are satisfied with the high level of academic skills, leadership development, scholarly focus and ‘outside the box’ experience as the main reasons to commit to the program,” she said.

As part of the program, the Research students will be working with mentors they will select at the beginning of next year, after they have determined their research projects.

The Capstone program also has a summer enrichment program that includes team building, provided in collaboration with the Kendall County Outdoor Education Center, as well as instruction in writing and collaboration.

“This is only the second year of recruitment, but as we continue to build the Capstone program and have more experience in recruitment, our conversation will move to the middle school,” Mateyka said.

The AP Capstone students will be honored at a Seminar Dinner and Initiation Celebration on March 31.

This event, to be hosted by the Plano Chamber of Commerce, is designed to introduce the Capstone students to the community and to begin networking with potential AP Research course mentors.

Community leaders, business people, Plano School Board members, and other local dignitaries are invited to the event. The location for the event has not yet been decided.

The other Illinois schools chosen to take the Capstone courses are Cary-Grove; Crystal Lake Central and South; Prairie Ridge; East and West Leyden; Glenbard East, North and West; Gwendolyn Brooks; Jones; Lane Tech; Northside College Prep; Walter Payton College Prep; Lake Forest; and Whitney M. Young Magnet.

Plano is the only school in Kendall County chosen to offer the Capstone courses, Garcia said.

Lange, 27, has an incurable rare muscle disease called McArdles (GSD). She recently had surgery for compartment syndrome due to this rapidly progressing disease, and lost part of her left leg muscle. She is married with two children, and has been unable to work for two years. All funds raised were given to help pay for medical expenses.

The mathematical perspective though, is that their color vision is reduced to only two dimensions. Many people (and actually most mammals) are colorblind this way. In its most common form, colorblindness means you can perceive the difference between blue and yellow, but a pattern of red and green stripes or a football game between teams with red and green jerseys is impossible to distinguish.

The surprising thing is that many birds and insects have four – or even five – types of cones, allowing them to see an even more vibrant spectrum of colors than any person has seen.

From the insects’ point of view, we humans are hopelessly colorblind.

With only three dimensions of color vision, we are unable to see the radiant ultraviolet bulls-eye pattern on the black-eyed susan. We see the daffodil as a flat yellow, oblivious to the shocking alternating stripes that appear on every daffodil blossom.

Imagine what the world would look like if you had 16 types of cones, like the mantis shrimp?

Enjoy the many hues of spring, no matter how many dimensions of color you can see. And enjoy the mystery of it all a little bit more, knowing there’s even more beauty that we cannot see.

As we finally approach spring, we look forward to the return of brilliantly colorful spring flowers. But even more interesting than the beautiful colors we will see are the beautiful colors we cannot see.

The strength and beauty of mathematics is that it gives us the right perspective to think about confusing statements like the one above.

Many people see mathematics as a morass of formulas and calculations, but if you advance far enough, you get to learn things like “linear algebra.”

Don’t stop reading there, because I am about to tell you the many ways linear algebra impacts your everyday life.

Netflix uses linear algebra to predict what movie or TV series you will enjoy. Google uses linear algebra to predict what website you are looking for.

The Math and Engineering Club at Waubonsee Community College uses linear algebra to predict who will win the NCAA basketball tournament.

And we can use linear algebra to describe how color really works.

Human eyesight is based on three types of cones in our eyes. Using linear algebra, we know to think of this as seeing three “dimensions” of color.

Look at a computer screen with a magnifying glass to see that the colors are generated by three types of pixels: red, green and blue.

Look inside your inkjet printer to see that the colors are generated using three types of ink: cyan, magenta and yellow. Look at an image in a computer graphics program to see the color described in terms of three quantities: hue, saturation and value.

There are many ways to describe color, but for most humans, color is always built out of three dimensions.

Plano schools stress importance of college

news@kendallcountynow.com College is an important move for Plano High School graduates and it’s something school officials encourage all students to do, Eric Benson, school principal, told board members recently.

“Because of increased encouragement, the number of applicants is increasing,” he said.

Applying to four or more colleges has become a national movement to help every student prepare for and succeed in college and career opportunities, Benson noted.

“It aims to increase the number and quality of college applications, helping you find at least four colleges that are a good academic, social and financial fit,” Benson said. “Dramatically, over the past few years we continue to move in a stronger direction, with students applying to four-year schools.”

Benson said that from a total senior class of 148 students, 106 have applied to colleges. Thirty-two applied to four or more colleges, 74 have applied for up to three colleges, and of the remainder, five are enlisting in the military and the rest are either undecided or are planning to enter the workforce, he said.

College lists include three catego-

ries of schools, he said. They are safety, good fits, and reach.

In a safety school the student will exceed the admissions requirements, which include ACT/SAT scores, weighted and unweighted GPA, class rank, awards and honors, and extra-curricular participation.

“Of the 71 percent that have already applied to college, only 15 percent have applied at Waubonsee Community College,” he said, noting that many students consider this to be a safe school.

A good fit school means the student’s academic profile matches up well with the admissions requirements for the college.

And in a reach school, the student may apply with the minimum requirements for admission, knowing that depending on the other applicants, they may or may not make it.

“We have students that are stretching and seeing what options they will have, while knowing they can always apply to WCC. These numbers are improved for us,” he said, noting that usually by now, only 50 to 60 percent of the seniors have applied.

“Our guidance counselors and staff have really pushed the importance of having options. You don’t have options when you sit back and wait for things to

come to you,” he said.

Benson said 60 students have received confirmation that their Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) has been received, 25 students are PELL grant eligible and 20 students are MAP grant eligible.

“Generally, we would have 50 to 60 percent of students eligible for state or federal financial aid, with approximately the same number receiving additional awards, scholarships and grants from their attending schools.

“Many students are awaiting financial aid packages from the schools they have been accepted to before committing,” he added.

Benson said counselors are currently assisting and following up with students who have not submitted the FAFSA application.

Local scholarships such as the Gustafson Scholarship offered by Waubonsee Community College will be among the 50 to 75 that will be awarded at Senior Awards night on May 18.

Benson said freshmen and sophomores are now working on their fouryear plans. They are meeting with counselors every two weeks to review transcripts and credits and setting end of year and academic goals.

There also is an ineligibility group

which consists of students who failed two or more classes from the previous semester or five points.

Freshmen and sophomores that have good behavior but struggle academically total 24 students. Benson said school officials are working to help provide strategies for the students to become better prepared with academic skills.

He said these are the students that become at risk of not graduating on time, so school officials are working to get them back on track immediately.

Benson said Andrew Bobbit, chief executive officer for the Fox Valley Family YMCA, has offered an incentive for students to apply to four or more colleges. Those who do will receive a free individual membership to the YMCA, through September 2016. This is the first year for this program. It was not advertised until midway through the process.

“When many applications for college run from $50 to $100 or more, it becomes taxing to families to apply to multiple schools. This was a great perk offered by the Y. The cost to the Y was approximately $3,000, with a private donor covering half of the cost. It is a great reward for some of our hardest-working students,” Benson said.

12 Man charged in hit-and-run crash

mmallory@shawmedia.com A Yorkville man was arrested Sunday following a hit-and-run crash at the intersection of Dickson Road and Route 30 in Montgomery.

Peter J. Holich, 28, of the 1300 block of Evergreen Lane in Yorkville, was charged with leaving the scene of a property damage accident, driving on a suspended license and a Kendall County failure to appear warrant for a charge of improper use of a credit/ debit card.

According to an arrest report from the Kendall County Sheriff’s Office, at about 3:20 p.m. Sunday, the vehicle

driven by Holich struck the vehicle of Matthew J. Jaquez, 30, which was stopped at a stop sign. There were no reported injuries from the accident, but the report states Holich did not stop to exchange insurance information with Jaquez, of Montgomery.

Holich was later located and taken into custody by Sugar Grove police when his vehicle was parked at the Aldi supermarket along Route 47 in Sugar Grove. He was detained by Sugar Grove police and transfered to Kendall County sheriff’s deputies, at which point charges were filed. He was also cited for failing to reduce speed to avoid an accident and operating an uninsured motor vehicle.

ive years ago, Joshua Wetterich of Millbrook was home-schooled and didn’t know too many boys his own age. His parents signed him up for Boy Scout Troop 71 of Plano, and he said that it is one of the best things they could have done.

“I met all of my best friends in Boy Scouts,” said Wetterich, now 17 and a Life Scout. “I’m really glad my parents had me join Boy Scouts. I’ve done so many things outdoors, like going hiking in New Mexico and going camping and fishing. I would not have gone or done any of those things if I wasn’t a Scout.”

Boy Scout Troop 71 either camps or participates in an activity each month. Excursions include camping, canoeing, skiing and rock climbing.

Last year, they spent a week at the Boy Scouts of America’s Florida National High Adventure Sea Base. The Scouts are fundraising to attend the 2017 National Scout Jamboree in West Virginia. Attending the event will cost each scout approximately $1,600.

Boy Scout Troop 71 has been hosting fish fries as its annual fundraiser for 38 years.

“It’s actually the only fundraiser we do,” Scoutmaster Tim Barker said.

“It pays for our equipment, badges and scholarships for summer camp. People look forward to our fish fries and ask all year long about when they start. Even though it’s a typical Friday night fish fry, you don’t have to be Catholic to come. It’s a great place to meet, talk to friends and eat good food.”

Barker said that each week, between 180 and 280 people attend the dinner, and between 250 and 300 pounds of fish are purchased and fried.

He served on the council Repair and Maintenance committee and staff for the National Jamboree at the Summit in 2014 and 2015. He is an active Vigil member of the Order of the Arrow, working on service projects, and attended a project in the Missouri Mark Twain Forest to help conservation efforts there. He has coordinated and chaperoned student trips to Washington D.C. and supports the Plano School District 88 and American Legion Post 395.

The Maramech Hill District is part of Three Fires Council of the Boy Scouts of America.

The Boy Scouts help run the fish fries and do everything from breading and frying the fish to refilling tartar sauce on the tables.

“My philosophy is to help teach the boys to become men,” Barker said. “The boys do most of the work themselves.

Many have been doing this for multiple years, so they are pretty good at what they do.”

Tenderfoot Andrew Harrelson of Plano, 11, said he likes to attend the fish fries because he has fun when he helps others.

“I like helping the community and the troop,” Harrelson said. “Refilling bottles of ketchup and tartar sauce and getting drinks for people is helping them. One of our Boy Scout oaths is to help other people at all times.”

Two area Boy Scout leaders were honored recently for their service to Scouting by being awarded the District Award of Merit.

Kirt Byerley of Hinckley and John McGinnis of Plano were each awarded the Maramech Hill District Award of Merit at a ceremony on Sunday, Feb. 28. The ceremony was part of the annual dinner held to honor Scout leaders in Kendall County and the surrounding area.

The District Award of Merit is presented to Scout leaders who render noteworthy service to youth in Scouting.

Kirt Byerley is presently serving as Chartered Organization Representative, Executive Officer, and Institutional Head for Pack 317, Troop 71, and Crew 0013 in Plano. He was previously awarded the Den Leader, Webelos Den Leader, Cub Scouter, Pack Trainer, and Boy Scout Leader’s Training Awards.

He has served on many activities and training staffs, including OKPIK cold weather training, Archery and BB Gun Range Safety Officer training and district Cub Day Camp. He is a member of Plano American Legion Post 395, Sandwich VFW Post 1486, and Sandwich Sportsman’s Club. He is registered as an NRA instructor.

John McGinnis is presently serving as Advancement Chair of Troop 71 in Plano.

Previously he has served as an Assistant Scoutmaster and a Merit Badge counselor, and was awarded the Boy Scout Leader’s Training Award. As

Area Boy Scout leaders given Awards of Merit

mschury@kendallcountynow.com Metra Board Chairman Martin Oberman suggested Monday that Kendall County leaders may want to consider using $6.6 million in federal funding currently earmarked for studies for a possible extension of Metra commuter rail service into the county for some other project.

“If I were making the decision I’d say if I look at the odds of ever getting a railroad versus the odds of what I need today in terms of infrastructure or public works – I could use that $6.6 million for something I could sink my teeth into right now rather than a study that is going to sit on a shelf,” Oberman said.

The former Chicago alderman, who was elected chairman of Metra’s Board of Directors in 2014, spoke Monday during a task force meeting at the Historic Kendall County Courthouse in Yorkville. The meeting was set up by U.S. Rep. Randy Hult- U.S. Rep. gren, R-Plano.

Randy Oberman stressed Hultgren, that no one was sug- R-Plano gesting taking the money away from Kendall County but he added the funds could probably be redirected to another local transportation improvement project.

Oberman said it would currently cost between $200 million to $300 million to extend Metra service from Aurora to Kendall County, depending on how far west the service would extend.

“If it is physically impossible to do anything else with it, I suppose you might as well do the studies,” Oberman said. “If you want to say to me, ‘Listen, Oberman, we think you’re all wet, we think that we are such persuasive people that if we had our studies in hand we could get Springfield and Washington to give us the $300 million,’ then, OK, make that judgment.

I just want us to make the judgment rationally.”

Oberman added that Metra has its own financial difficulties funding its existing infrastructure. He said the agency has $11.7 billion in capital needs.

“If we had the funds I’d put a train in every town where anybody wanted a train,” Oberman said. “We’re not against providing service to Kendall County or any place else.”

Michael Gillis, a Metra spokesman, said after the meeting the $11.7 billion in capital expenses the agency is facing is the amount of money the RTA estimates that Metra needs to spend over the next decade to maintain its facilities in good repair.

“At best, we can expect about $2.8 billion during that same timeframe from traditional state and federal sources,” Gillis said.

Among those listening to Oberman during the meeting were elected officials, staff and mayors from Plano, Yorkville, Oswego, Montgomery and Kendall County. Also in attendance were former State Rep. Tom Cross and State Sen. Jennifer Bertino-Tarrant, D-Shorewood.

Cross said only a few years ago most people thought an Oswego Metra station was going to happen sooner rather than later.

“There was an expectation that this was going to get done,” Cross said.

Kendall County Board member Scott Gryder said he agreed with Cross that it felt like just a few years ago Metra service might become a reality here.

“It’s something that we expected to have happen and I think many people thought it would be done by now,” Gryder said. “We all know that government can move very slowly at times.”

Cross recalled about six or seven years ago the Illinois General Assembly passed a capital bill that was to include a portion of the estimated $125 million to bring the line from Aurora through Montgomery to Oswego.

Cross said there was also talk that former U.S. Speaker of the House Dennis Hastert, R-Plano, was going to get about $75 million in federal funds for the project.

Cross said he recalled Hastert secured that $75 million for the project before leaving office.

“It may have been in or it may have been out – it sounds like it’s not there,” Cross said. “I realize life changes but

Plano police seeking local woman who fled traffic stop attempt

Plano police have issued a warrant for the arrest of Karen J. Reeves, 47, of the 100 block of Long Beach Road, Boulder Hill. Police said Reeves is wanted on charges of driving while her license was suspended or revoked, fleeing or attempting to elude a police officer, speeding, improper lane usage and disobeying a stop sign.

The charges stem from an incident that occurred Feb. 23 at 9:11 a.m. when a Plano police officer attempted to Karen J. stop Reeves’ vehicle at Big Reeves Rock Avenue and Church Street. Police said the vehicle would not pull over and continued northbound on Rock Creek Road. Police terminated their pursuit in the area of Jericho Road and Dugan Road near Sugar Grove.

If anyone has information on Reeves’ whereabouts they are asked to contact Plano police at 630-552-3122. how to move forward with the remaining funding.

He said that in the next few months they need to figure out if they want to move forward with the engineering studies.

“What I think we take away from this is common commitment to look forward to what’s good for Kendall County, a common commitment that this money was intended to be used here and should still be used here,” Hultgren said.

Johnson said they need to get beyond “guesstimates.”

“Right now we have nothing ready,” Johnson said. “Right now all we are asking for is those studies to be completed so that we know the true costs and we can talk to our residents about joining the RTA if that’s the direction we decide we are going.”

Cross said everyone in the room realizes it’s going to take some time and financing is hard to come by at the state and local level, but they have to at least ask if they expect to make progress.

“For folks that don’t live out here – it takes me, if I’m lucky, an hour and a half to two hours to drive into the city of Chicago; on a bad day it takes three hours – that’s insane.

That’s bad for the economy, that’s bad for my blood pressure, it’s bad all around,” he said.

that’s where the municipalities were coming from and where Oswego was coming from,” Cross said. “I was told to my face by Phil [Pagano, former Metra executive director] that this was going to happen.”

Pagano died in 2010.

Hultgren said they looked and can’t find the money to pay for the service extension anywhere.

“There has been some misunderstanding of what dollars are actually available and what dollars have actually been allocated,” Hultgren said. “There have been other things floated out that there have been $75 million. I don’t believe that’s true, we have not been able to find that anywhere – if anybody can help us identify that.”

Hultgren said he feels like the engineering can get worked out later.

“How is this actually going to come together? How are we going to pay for it? To me that feels like that challenge,” Hultgren said. “If we can have that I feel very confident that the engineering can get done, you can figure that part out.”

Oswego Village President Gail Johnson said she felt they should move forward with the studies.

“If the study is going to tell us

some of these things and I think we ought to get that information from the experts rather than me making up whether my constituents will bear it,” Johnson said.

“I don’t mind continuing the conversations about what if – I mean I’m from the generation that thought we were going to have George Jetson-style hovercrafts by now,” she said. “My concern is that the faces around this table change every two years and so if we don’t have the willpower to pull the trigger and say ‘Let’s get this study done’ … we’re going to keep pushing it out.”

Johnson added that Kendall County’s population is expected to grow exponentially over the next few decades.

“We’re going to have an onslaught and are expected to double within the next 20 years. Kendall County is still the fastest growing county in the state by quite a bit,” Johnson said. “We just want the studies done so that when federal money becomes available we can say we need a piece of that – without that [study] we have nothing.”

The Village of Oswego funded a study in 2002 that examined the feasibiity of bringing a Metra station to the village. That study put the cost for a station at about $100 million.

With Streator gaining momentum, Chavez (15 points) knocked in eight points in the third quarter, but Pryor countered with 10 points as the Bulldogs stayed within six points entering the fourth quarter, 39-33. Following a basket by Ramirez, Plano went to the line 12 times and although the Reapers made only 13 of 21 attempts, it was enough to maintain the lead down the stretch.

“We’ve been on a roll and we stuck to what we know, and that’s good de-

fense,” Chavez said.

Streator hit a 3-pointer to close the gap 49-40 with 2:13 to play, but Will Benson, Chavez and Ramirez (21 points, 12 rebounds) scored six quick points before Ramirez closed out the game with four more at the free-throw line.

“Loose balls were big. Once we get loose balls, we get people running down the court and that’s what our game is,” Ramirez said. “We just run down the court and get those transition buckets.”

Plano’s last postseason win came as a Class 2A team in 2012, and is the first championship for the third-year head coach.

“It’s tremendous. There was a buzz at school and the guys were excited,” Kee said. “It’s just an awesome win, and to do it here, it hasn’t happened here a whole lot. To do it in a 3A regional is pretty big for us.”

The Reapers knocked in six free throws before Anthony Martinez hit his shot to cap a big Plano run. Dahveed Mckinney (9 points) and Marcus Ramirez (15 points) hit back-to-back shots to cut the Hawks’ lead to four late in the first half, and Ramirez’ final shot just before the buzzer created a 35-29 game at intermission.

“It took us a while to get into the flow of the game,” Kee said. “They play at a much faster pace and get in the passing lanes and make it really tough. Once we did, we were able to take it to them a bit, but we just couldn’t score in the second half. We rushed some shots.”

Plano was held to 20 points in the second half, but made one more charge at Hillcrest behind an 11-0 run in the third. The Hawks fouled Maisonet with

7:00 left in the fourth quarter, and Maisonet sank both free throws to tie the game at 45. Hillcrest scored the next nine points over a four-minute span to take control and seal the victory.

“We’ve played in such big games this year and we’ve been in situations like this. You can’t get rattled,” Houston said. “I just tried to be as composed as possible and they calmed down and just started to play like they normally play.”

Plano closed its season with its first 3A sectional appearance in school history after winning its own regional last Friday. Plano’s last regional title came in 2A play in 2012.

“When you get to this point, you’re not going to face any bad teams,” Kee said. “Normally in Plano, people only come for football games and it was great to see this kind of response. This past week has been unbelievable with the home regional – it’s been great.”

Hillcrest has not played a game west of Aurora all season, but the Plano boys’ basketball team was prepared to show the southern Cook County squad just what Interstate Eight basketball is all about.

Playing in Tuesday’s Class 3A Streator Sectional semifinal, Plano rallied from a double-digit deficit in the second half to tie the game in the opening minute of the fourth quarter, but the Reapers never led against the Hawks.

Plano (19-10) faded down the stretch in a 64-49 loss to Hillcrest to bring the 2015-16 season to a close.

“I told them I didn’t know what to expect tonight, and what an idiot for thinking that because these guys have fought so hard all year that they weren’t just going to lay down,” Plano coach Kyle Kee said. “They’ve had a

great year. Yeah, we would have liked to move on – everyone would – but we faced a tough team and I couldn’t be more proud of the way we played and the way we fought.”

Hillcrest (23-6), winner of the Thornridge Regional, will advance to Friday’s sectional championship game, taking on the winner of Wednesday’s semifinal between Peotone and Lincoln-Way West. Results of the second semifinal game were unavailable at press time.

“Plano played very well tonight.

They moved the ball well and shot well early,” Hillcrest coach Don Houston said. “I knew at this point in the season, no team was going to be easy.

We expected this type of game coming here.”

Explosive start vs. Streator leads Reapers to first regional title

ksharp@kendallcountynow.com An explosive start to Friday night’s Plano Regional set the wheels in motion for the host Reapers to hoist their first Class 3A championship in program history.

Plano built a 22-5 lead over Streator and kept its composure at the foul line late to clinch a 62-52 victory. With the win, the Reapers (19-9) advance to Tuesday’s Streator Sectional semifinal against Hillcrest – winner of the

Thornridge Regional.

“We’re just going to stick to what we know, and that’s good defense, and hopefully we can sneak out with a sectional championship,” Plano senior Sergio Chavez said. “We’ve been playing together for the last six, seven years and to finish it off like this [at home], it means a lot to us. We’re not done yet.”

Plano’s Anthony Martinez got things started for the Reapers with a pair of 3-pointers early before Marcus Ramirez hit one midway through the

first quarter. The Reapers got their fifth triple of the game off the hands of Marcus McKinney to start the second quarter and give Plano a 17-point advantage as Streator shot just 26 percent in the first half.

“We wanted to come out and pressure,” Plano coach Kyle Kee said. “We think we’re a little bit bigger than them and quicker, so we wanted to put pressure on them. I think it paid dividends; they didn’t shoot the ball as well as they normally do. We wanted to get in their face and we were able to really

frustrate them.”

Streator (14-17) turned to D’Angelo Pryor for help, and the junior forward poured in 11 second-quarter points to cut Plano’s lead at halftime, 27-22. Pryor finished with a game-high 30 points for his third best offensive night of the season in addition to 12 rebounds.

“It’s never a good thing when you’re down 22-5, but we told them after the first quarter that we were fine,” Streator coach Beau Doty said. “We got
