Farmers Market coming to Genoa T

he Genoa Area Chamber of Commerce is excited to introduce The Genoa Homegrown and Handmade Fresh Farmers Market, which will feature local farmers, live music, children’s activities, tastings and much more.

The market will be held in the Genoa City parking lot, as well as on South Genoa Street in downtown Genoa.

Markets will be on the last Saturday of the month and will begin May 30 and run through Sept. 26.

The 2015 summer market dates are May 30, June 27, July 25, Aug. 29 and Sept. 26.

Hours are 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Wouldn’t you rather stroll amidst outdoor stalls of fresh produce on a sunny day than roll your cart around a grocery store with artificial lights and piped in music?

Coming to the farmers market makes shopping a pleasure rather than a chore.

The market is a community hub – a place to meet up with friends, bring the children, or just get a taste of small-town life in Genoa.

The 2015 Boone County Fair August 11 – 16

with young ladies vying for the title of “2015 Miss Boone County Fair” along with 20 young girls looking to win the title of “Little Miss”. Admission to the pageant is free.

BELVIDERE – Country Star Josh Turner will be headlining the 2015 Boone County Fair, 8791 Rt. 76, which runs from Tuesday, August 11th through Sunday, August 16th. This will be the 52nd fair at the Rt. 76 location one mile north of Belvidere.

Tickets for the grandstand shows will go on sale Saturday, July 11th from 8:00am to 4:00pm. at the fairgrounds ticket office at Gate 1. Starting July 13th the ticket office will be open Monday – Friday 9:00am to 6:00pm, Saturday 8:00am to 12noon. Closed Sundays.

Josh Turner will take to the grandstand stage on Saturday, August 15th at 8:00pm. You won’t want to miss “An Evening with Josh Turner” with Turner’s rich, deep voice and distinctive country style. Tickets are only $15 and $18.

The premier tribute band ‘Transit Authority’ will bring the dynamic and energetic sounds of the iconic band ‘Chicago’ to the grandstand stage on Wednesday, August 12th at 7:00pm. Tickets are only $8.

Other grandstand shows will include the popular Next Level Professional Bull Riding Competition on Friday at 7:00pm with the meanest bulls and toughest cowboys the sport can offer. Also included in the show will be Mutton Bustin’ with 4 to 9 year olds trying to ride a sheep for 8 seconds, a Wild Cow Milking contest, and Barrel Racing. Tickets are only $10.

The 2015 Boone County Fair August 11 – 16 New free shows on the grounds will include of WGN Radio fame, Orion ‘Big O’ Samuelson doing his Noon Show with the Dale Rhode and the Crossroads band in the Entertainment Pavilion from Noon to 1:00pm on Wednesday, August 12th.

Two all new shows on the south end of the grounds along Big Thunder Rd between gates 2 and 3 are: Timber Tina’s World Champion Lumberjills, the first and original all women group of logging sports entertainers. These are ‘Chics with Axes’, highly skilled athletes competing in several events such as log rolling and axe throwing.

The other new show is called “The Marvelous Mutts”.

This seasoned crew of performing canines, all adopted from shelters and through rescue groups have wowed crowds throughout the world with their amazing athletic ability. Each dog has an amazing story and even bigger heart.

There will be a new chain saw wood carver this year.

He’s Zoli of Zoli’s Woodcarving from Monroe, Wisonsin.

His carvings will be sights to behold as he creates them Wednesday through Saturday afternoons. All of them will be auctioned off at noon on Sunday.

The Flaming Monkeys 4-H Robotic Club will be putting on robot demonstrations on the Flora Rd. stage from 12noon to 1pm Tuesday through Saturday. On Sunday at 2:00pm on the same stage Mathew Wundrow will be performing with his 4-piece band until 3:00pm.

There will also be the Stilt walking silliness of Richard Renner and “The Real Beal’s One Man Band” strolling the grounds every day along with the ever popular “Magic Mike” with his amazing slight of hand magic tricks Wednesday through Sunday.

Midwest Museum Of Natural History’s Rockin’ For The Reptiles Festival Get ready to rock for the Midwest Museum of Natural History’s Rockin’ for the Reptiles! On June 27th at 11 am-3 pm, this outdoor family-friendly summer festival will be the talk of the town, located at the corner of Somonauk St. and Elm St in downtown Sycamore, IL. There’s something for everyone at this event: live music, delicious food and desserts, a bounce house crafts, games for all ages, and of course, LIVE reptiles!

Get hands on while learning about what makes a reptile special; Friends of Scales Reptile Rescue and the Chicago Herpetological Society will bring amazing reptiles including tortoises, turtles, lizards, and snakes!

Visit with the Museum’s fan favorites as they stop by for a picture in the selfie-booth, where you can enter your selfie into a contest; win prizes like a free birthday party at the Museum. Rockin’ for the Reptiles is $6/person, and will include admission to the Midwest Museum for the day with your Rockin’ wristband!

Dance the afternoon away with the reptiles as you support a great cause. The Museum is the home to

approximately 30 live animals, each of whom are rescues. Museum staff and volunteers take care of the animals in every way, from feeding to training them! Fireflies are often seen lighting up the night sky on warm evenings. They are particularly abundant during the summer months. One reason that fireflies glow is to attract mates. Males will flash, and females will respond to mates they find interesting. Fireflies also may glow to avoid predators. The luciferase enzyme in firefly cells causes a chemical reaction that stimulates light, a phenomenon called bioluminescence. Fireflies are filled with lucibufagins, a poor-tasting chemical that turns off predators from attacking the blinking bug. Some fireflies cannot light up at all and use pheromones to attract mates. Fireflies can be fun to catch and release and also beneficial to have around. In the larval stage, fireflies will eat destructive insects. Adult fireflies may feed on nectar and could help to pollinate plants.
