Greetin s Greetings
FROM THE MAYOR OF PLAINFIELD
F
or over two and a half years as Mayor, and with your help, we have been making the Best Plainfield! By untapping the energy of all of our 45,000 residents, an unprecedented era of progress has dawned – a new Golden Age in our history. The door has been opened to a new generation of ‘doers’ who are stepping forward, respecting our traditions but also innovating and creating the new Plainfield.
VILLAGE OF PLAINFIELD
24401 W. Lockport St. Plainfield, IL 60544 (815) 436-7093 www.plainfieldil.gov
During the last few years our industrial base has grown by leaps and bounds, helping to provide a diversified tax base that relieves the burden on the homeowner. For the first time, in fiscal year 2022/23, our sales tax revenue has outstripped our real estate tax base with so much more to come. While there are so many new, expanding, and thriving small businesses, some of the larger additions include Costco, MNS1 Express, and the Hawk Auto Group with more in the pipeline. Plainfield abounds in food and beverage options both in the old downtown and out on our major highways offering craft food, locally roasted coffee, cocktails, craft

beer, and live music every week. We have also focused on green space and recreation as we develop our Green Belt – a buffer of green space to be used as a wildlife habitat and recreational buffer, screening our new industry from our homes. Plans are underway to expand our municipal parks to provide more recreational space to our residents and additional development at Electric Park continues as we obtain state and federal grants. Plainfield is about quality of life – economic opportunity, safety, and recreational options for our residents. People and businesses want to be here and new homes abound. A strong sense of community has always been a part of our culture and transcends age and diversity, new and old. We are One Plainfield – the Best Plainfield for everyone who calls it home.
JOHN ARGOUDELIS Mayor of Plainfield
Greetin s Greetings
FROM THE MAYOR OF SHOREWOOD Hello! My name is Clarence “CC” DeBold and I am the proud mayor of the Village of Shorewood. Serving as mayor in Shorewood is not only rewarding, but it has also given me the opportunity to meet so many wonderful people who care about Shorewood as much as I do.
VILLAGE OF SHOREWOOD
One Towne Center Blvd. Shorewood, IL 60404 (815) 725-2150 www.shorewoodil.gov
The Village of Shorewood is a town of just over 18,000 residents, and we continue to grow. Shorewood sits along the DuPage River, which is a source of recreation for many during the summer months. People enjoy rafting, kayaking, and fishing on the river, as well as the use of our numerous parks. Shorewood is a community that still has that “small-town” feel, and people find it a desirable place to call home. Shorewood prides itself on the many exciting events and activities that take place throughout the year. Our annual Holiday Markets bring in residents and visitors, alike, and take place the first weekend in December. We have food, drinks, vendors, and plenty of activities and “special” guests to get everyone in the holiday spirit!
The Village also hosts Thursday night “Parties in the Park” throughout the summer. There are alternating concert and movie nights, both of which are family-friendly events. We also host BBQ & Brews in June, Crossroads Fest in August, and Oktobrew Fest in September. If you have not been to an event in Shorewood, definitely put it on your agenda because you will not be disappointed! For more information, or to see what is happening in our town, check out our Facebook page, or visit the Village of Shorewood’s website at www.vil.shorewood.il.us. One of my main goals as mayor is to “Showcase Shorewood” because I truly believe we have an amazing community. We have dedicated businesses, loyal residents, and a clean, well-maintained town that we hope you enjoy as much as we do. Kind regards, CLARENCE “CC” DEBOLD Mayor of Shorewood

ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT
WHAT’S DEVELOPING T IN PLAINFIELD
he state of the economic development commercial and business climate in Plainfield continues to be active and strong in all areas of the village. There is vigorous activity going on now and more coming in the near future, according to Jake Melrose, Economic Development Director for the Village of Plainfield. Melrose notes that the Prairie Creek development just south of the Meijer is filling in with development with only 7.8 acres of development left of the 86 acres that was vacant just three years ago. “It was also announced that Black Dog Distillery will be relocating their facilities to the Warehouse District building with Werkforce Brewing, Ten Drops Coffee Lab, and Sable Creek Winery,” adds Melrose. The Animal Medical Center of Plainfield opened their 12,000-square-foot animal hospital in 2023 and a new 20,000-squarefoot Aldi grocery store is currently under construction at the corner of Joseph Avenue and Route 59. What’s next on the horizon? The upcoming bigger development is that Hawk Auto was approved for a rezoning of 20 acres on Route 59, just north of Rolf Road. “They are proposing the potential for four total dealerships with the expectations for the first two to move forward with construction in 2024,” adds Melrose.

According to Melrose, the village is seeing many other commercial developments. They include a new Dollar Tree store in the Menards development; a new Taco Bell just north of Industrial Drive and Route 59; and a Belle Tire opening soon just south of Industrial and Route 59. A new medical facility for longterm child treatment – N&C Impact Care – is under construction on U.S. Route 30 near 135th and a new modern Indian cuisine restaurant, Imperial Kitchen, is moving into the center with Chop’d/Khaos Brewcade. Oasis Senior Living is under construction at 143rd and Wallin Drive, and a new 80,000-square-foot selfstorage facility was approved at the northwest corner of Fraser and Route 59. The 143rd Street west expansion from Steiner Road to Ridge Road will be under construction with anticipation of bringing new developments along with it. A new 350,000-square-foot cold storage facility is currently under construction near Steiner Road and 143rd; a 1.2 million square foot DHL Logistics center will also begin construction plus another 1.5 million square foot warehouse building is expected to also break ground next year. “These development additions represent over $3.6 million in property taxes to the local taxing bodies,” said Melrose.
ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT
WHAT’S DEVELOPING IN SHOREWOOD
T
he economic forecast in Shorewood is active with a wide range of opportunities and services available for economic growth, including bringing Lake Michigan water to the area. According to Economic Development Director Natalie Engel for the Village of Shorewood, the village has also unveiled a new website at www.shorewoodil.gov. “We encourage everyone to check out the website. You’ll find current information on village events and services with an opportunity to conveniently pay water bills. Plus, residents will find a local businesses directory to help with their shopping needs.” In addition, the village adopted a new comprehensive plan, a long-range document that looks at everything related to land use and development. This plan was for all of Shorewood – for existing neighborhoods as well as future development. It can be viewed on the village’s website. Engel notes that the village met with many residents throughout the planning process
and incorporated their feedback into the plan. She adds that “some of the things the residents influenced were making sure that Shorewood preserves its community-oriented small town charm, adding shopping and dining opportunities, building on the DuPage River as an asset, and enhancing park, recreation and trail opportunities throughout the village.” Engel adds that it’s also been a great year in Shorewood for people who enjoy dining out and pampering themselves. “We have welcomed several new businesses which sell food and sweet treats as well as businesses specializing in personal care,” she said. Five restaurants have joined the community offering their wide range of menu specialties. They include West 52 BBQ, Pizza Ranch, The Wing Stop and LaMichoacana. Opening soon will be Corrigan’s, a large, family-friendly Irish Pub. Two new bakeries, Cheesecakes by James and Making Sweet Memories, provide a variety of delicious handcrafted sweets.
Indulge at unique cafes and tea shops, too, for tasty hot and cold beverages, like Biggby Coffee, 2 Teas Boba, Critical Grind and the Royal Tea Room. Several options for good health and personal care have arrived on the scene. Pro-active health maintenance facilities such as Treadfit, Strength Revolution, GritRX and Stretchlab provide the tools to accomplish fitness goals. Express Med Spa offers a variety of medical esthetic procedures. Midwest Medical Weight Loss Clinic provides a specially tailored “personalized weight loss program” for individuals. Emediate Cure is opening a second location at Route 59 and Jefferson with adult and pediatric walk-in clinic services. Engel adds that the village has welcomed several new personal care businesses to town including Blu House of Barbers, Style Haus, Petite Nails, Lux by Maya, Lacy’s Nail Salon, Hidden Gem Hair Salon, White Sage Hair Company, Adora Nails and Elegant Salon Suites.

DINING
DIVERSE FLAVORS IN LOCAL DINING
T
here are so many delicious and tasty dining options here in the Plainfield and Shorewood area. No matter what your appetite craves at any time of the day or night, there are plenty of choices that won’t disappoint. Restaurants, bars and grills specialize in triedand-true American favorites. Plus, there’s a richness of diversity that expands tastebud flavors with enriching Asian, Italian, Mexican, and Middle Eastern aromas. No matter what you choose, they’re all close to home throughout the downtown areas, walking distance, or a quick drive. Looking for a casual place to kick-back with family or friends or a lively place with a different kind of vibe that’s filled with music, tasty meals and amazing liquid refreshments? That means you’ll be enjoying yourself at two of the area’s unique and favorite eateries – Mauve Nosh & Libations in Shorewood and Moe Joe’s in Plainfield. Mauve Nosh & Libations came on the scene several years ago and became an instant hit. Owners and friends Nick Pena and Kala Saunders have over 30 years combined experience in the restaurant industry and they took the plunge of opening their own special place. Nick and Kala would like your time at Mauve Nosh & Libations to have a communal experience of time and conversation with family and friends. Note that there are no TVs blaring with the latest sports spectacle. “We want you to enjoy your experience with no distractions,” adds Nick.
Ever wonder how they chose the name Mauve? “Well, it’s a funny story,” says Nick. “Kala and I were hanging out together and working on our business plan to start our own restaurant. “We were drinking wine and accidentally spilled some of the wine and it turned out to be a pretty color, mauve. We were thinking of names for the restaurant and it was meant to be.” Mauve showcases an innovative menu that features culinary creative bar snacks and intriguing seasonal fare and small plates that are easy to “nosh” any evening. You can savor cheeses and meats, plus seasonal ingredient salads, and stylish sandwiches and soups. Nick also notes that “we don’t even own a freezer here as everything is made with fresh ingredients from local purveyors.” Mauve devotees enjoy the delicious libations – seasonal cocktails, bourbons, and specially selected wines. Nick knows his stuff. He’s certified as a beer cicerone and a Level 2 sommelier. Looking for fun? It’s time to turn your meal experience into a party Mardi Gras style at Moe Joe’s in Downtown Plainfield. Jamie Littell and her late husband Stu opened the restaurant in 2004. Its atmosphere is intoxicating from the minute you see it. The building’s exterior sets up a perfect Bourbon Street mood with wrought iron, street lanterns, and more to give you an idea of what you can look forward to inside. The creative menu fuses Cajun and Caribbean cuisine. Moe Joe’s has many signature and classic dishes to enjoy for lunch or dinner. Appetizers, soups, and salads all

have that special mouth-watering Creole or Cajun touch. Sixteen scrumptious Po Boy sandwiches options run the gamut from blackened chicken, alligator, fried crawfish and grilled portobello, to name a few. Bayou entrees delight your palate when you try a delicious saucy jambalaya and a Moe Joe gumbo soup, plus etoufee’s, fricasse’s and more. There’s such a wide variety of sides that accompany all of the meals on Moe Joe’s extensive menu, too. Jamie Littell is enthusiastic about her restaurant and grateful for her 74 employees, who add to the atmosphere and provide excellent customer service. “They really go the extra mile,” she said. “They are kind and good-hearted and will do anything here for the fun of it.” 2024 will be a special year as Moe Joe’s celebrates its 20th anniversary. “Our first big event of the year will be our infamous “Fat Tuesday” event when we will have a huge party,” says Jamie. “We’ll have a big circus act atmosphere and so many other fun things are planned,” she said. Jamie loves dreaming up ideas to keep Moe Joe’s fresh and to find ways to help others and she intends to celebrate Moe Joe’s 20th anniversary all year long. After all of these years she still keeps in touch with many former employees who always reach out to her. “My four children, ages 19 to 7, spend a lot of time in the restaurant,” she adds, “but I also am so blessed to have so many employees here where we all feel like family, too.”

ntrepreneurs have that certain “something” that gives them the energy and confidence to move forward with their businesses. Whether it starts with their professional or personal backgrounds or a need to fulfill a passion, they work hard and share their products or services for the benefit of others. Jennifer Joho, owner of J. Joho Boutique in Plainfield, followed her unique dream to open a storefront affordable boutique after starting with a small home-based business that grew with success. This busy wife and mother of two has also been a full-time hairdresser for the past 21 years. The J. Joho Boutique focuses on women’s clothing, accessories, shoes and special finds, but the spotlight surely shines on the exclusive jeans which have been designed by Jennifer herself. “There are six different styles of my J. Joho Jeans USA that fit your body the same way and there are different bottoms, such as non-distressed and distressed,” said Jennifer.

She notes how she and her mom would shop and could never find a good fitting pair of jeans. That gave Jennifer the needed spark to design her own comfortable jeans. Without any fashion design experience, but carrying her complete faith in the project, she found a manufacturer in Los Angeles who helped her move forward. “He is a wonderful man that believed in my story and helped me

EDUCATION
“We are very excited about providing this proven elective program for our students,” said Cindy Egizio, associate principal of curriculum and instruction at Plainfield East High School, “and thrilled that we have 24 junior and senior students in each of our high schools already signed up to participate when we begin in the fall of 2024.” “The success of this program as we’ve seen across the country is that the INCubatoredu empowers students through learning on how to start a business while actually creating one.” The key element of the INCubatoredu is the combined efforts of teachers, staff, and members of the community who work together to guide the students in their learning efforts. Egizio met with the board of directors of the Plainfield Shorewood Area Chamber of Commerce to pitch the INCubatoredu program and to both inform and enlist the help of the community’s business owners. “To help our students in the classroom explore the world of entrepreneurship, we will need assistance in three categories from
our community,” Egizio said. “Mentors will facilitate learning; a Community Champion with serve as a liaison between the school and business communities; and a Coach will work with students in their class to help them learn.” For two semesters, students work in teams and learn by doing. They develop a business model and gain market input to determine a viable product or service. Students are taught by a team which includes a classroom teacher, volunteer coaches and subject matter experts; and volunteers mentors, such as a business professional/ entrepreneur who guides one student team. Egizio is looking for volunteers from large companies, small business owners, and retirees, who are invaluable in collaborating with student teams as they build their business. Volunteers don’t conduct classes, but are there to support teachers and students during various stages of the school year. Volunteers are available to listen and guide students to facilitate learning and to have a listening ear to determine if students are interested in the
topic of their business building pursuit. The INCubatoredu school year program culminates with a final student “Pitch Night” competition to a volunteer Board of Advisors and/or investors. A charitable group, such as an educational foundation, may consider providing small grants to the student teams so that they can test business concepts at the mid-year “Minimum Viable Product” (MVP) stage to gain in-market experience. At “Pitch Night,” board members ask key questions to students about the team’s MVP goal, what did they learn about the experience, the team’s final product/service, and their financial model. The excitement builds as board members determine the top teams and rank them to determine the top student team business. The first place student team business model can turn into a reality during the summer and following school year. The INCubatoredu program is exhilarating for all concerned. It showcases the student’s yearn to learn through the expert advice of community business leaders.
We prepare learners for the future.

EDUCATION PLAINFIELD SCHOOLS
S
ince its infancy as a village, Plainfield has always been focused on providing a high level of education to the student population. Throughout the boom days of growth during the late-1990s and early-2000s, it was the award-winning Plainfield schools that attracted so many young families to the area. District 202’s mission is to serve the community as the primary source of comprehensive, high quality education in a trusting, supportive environment – to develop, at all levels, responsible, successful citizens by providing an education, in cooperation with home and community, which fosters each individual’s value, uniqueness, and importance and promotes lifelong learning in an ever-changing society. Today, covering more than 64 square miles, Plainfield Community Consolidated School District 202 serves parts of Bolingbrook; Crest Hill; Joliet; Lockport; Naperville; Plainfield; Romeoville and unincorporated Will and Kendall counties.
The District served 25,133 students during the 2020-21 school year. By enrollment, District 202 is the fifth-largest public school system in Illinois. While District 2020 may cover a vast territory, the Village of Plainfield can tout one of the bright educational spots in the region. BY THE NUMBERS Made up of 31 schools, Plainfield offers: l 1 preschool l 18 elementary schools l 7 middle schools l 4 high schools l 1 alternative school

RACIAL MAKEUP Plainfield Community Consolidated School District 202 has a diverse racial makeup of the student body with 51.9% White; 24.7% Hispanic; 11.8% Black/African American; 7% Asian; 4.3% Multi-Racial; 0.3% American Indian/Alaska native; and 0.1% Native Hawaiian/other Pacific. NEW RESOURCES While remote learning certainly had an impact during the 2020 school year, many of the resources purchased to assist with remote learning will become a valued asset for future learning. In September 2020, Plainfield District 202 purchased 6,700 laptops for pre-kindergarten through third grade students for use with remote learning. The additional resources will undoubtedly make future learning more flexible and increase the number of overall students who will have access to laptops.
