tanding at the start line there is a sea of families, classmates, neighbors and friends all encouraging each other and ready to celebrate at the finish.
The Plainfield Harvest 5K/10K race is the community event. While many race for personal records or think of it as a warm-up to the season’s marathons, the true mission of the race is supporting those in need.
“We donate proceeds back to the community,” explained Tasha Marsaglia, executive director of the Plainfield Shorewood Area Chamber of Commerce. The race is organized by the chamber and its members in cooperation with fellow community organizations and team of volunteers.
To date, the race proceeds have totaled more than $350,000 in donations back to the community, she said. Last year the agency distributed donation checks to 20 different agencies including Big Brothers Big Sisters of Will & Grundy counties, the local food pantry, Friends of the Plainfield Public Library and the Plainfield Emergency Management Agency.

This will be the 26th year for the race. The first race started with around 200 participants, Marsaglia said. Today the race expects around 1,000 participants to line up at the start line, including many families who race together.
“It’s always been a familyorientated race and we want to keep that vibe,” Marsaglia said.
The race includes the 1-miler race for children along with its 5K and 10K distances. To celebrate the race’s 25th anniversary last year it added the 10K distance and runners were excited for the opportunity to run the longer distance.
“It was such a great addition to the event. It gave people an opportunity to run another longer distance,” Marsaglia said.
The community-wide race takes teams of volunteers who lend a hand along with village and park district staff. From helping runners stay on the course to keeping runners hydrated at the water station, often groups will volunteer
together to share the fun.
“We’ve had groups from the YMCA, a local dance studio and high school students along with the members of our business community,” Marsaglia said.
The community feeling doesn’t end at the finish line. There is an after party and many participants and their families stay in town for brunch and lunch, watching football and enjoying the Sunday in downtown Plainfield.
And make sure to plan some extra time for race pick up at DNA Active Outfitters to enjoy some shopping in downtown Plainfield, stroll over for an ice cream cone or check out a restaurant too.
The Plainfield Harvest Race is a kickoff to the Endeavor Healthy Driven Running Series featuring three local races and encouraging participants to lace up for each race in the series. It Includes the Healthy Driven Naperville Half Marathon, 10K and 5K on Oct. 22 and the Fraidy Cat 5K, Ghost Run 8K and Meow Mile in Oct. 29 in Oswego.

From new restaurants to new homes, the Plainfield community continues to welcome new developments.
Another new eatery is slated for downtown Plainfield, explained Jake Melrose, economic development director for the village of Plainfield. Barrel & Vine, which has a location in Lemont, has applied for permits in Plainfield, taking the place of the former Opera House Steak and Seafood restaurant. Barrel & Vine describes its concept as “simple, fresh eats with artisanal crafted cocktails” according to its website.
The new restaurant follows a recent pattern in the downtown with one business closing its doors and another one in short-time taking its place. The former Tap House is now Fuse’d and joins fellow new restaurants The Clifton, created by the owners of the Next Whiskey Bar in Plainfield and Lisle and the family-owned Altiro Latin Fusion.
Melrose said talks are in progress to replace the site of the former Big Sammy’s Italian Eatery in downtown Plainfield and the new business promises to be delicious.
The mix of dining locations serves to continue to make Plainfield a destination
for residents of the southwest suburbs.
Another development that continues to grow is The Boulevard Place development that straddles Joliet and Plainfield at Interstate 55 and Route 30. On the Plainfield side of the development plans are underway for the new Cooper’s Hawk restaurant.
Construction continues to progress on new housing developments in Plainfield including Riverstone along the DuPage River at 127th Street, which includes plans for single family and town homes. The development Keller Farm located off Wallin Drive and Lockport is mix of single-family homes with townhomes near eight acres of new commercial property for future development. The development called Lockley Park near Steiner and 143rd Street includes townhomes.
The Woodman’s Food Market at 119th and Route 59 continues to move forward with the village of Plainfield and Woodman’s working on plans to bring more than $10 million of improvements to the intersection. The new Woodman’s grocery store will be 243,000 square feet, which is roughly 100,000 square feet larger than the Costco in Plainfield, Melrose said.

Progress continues the partnership between the Village of Shorewood and the YMCA to create more recreation and fitness opportunities for the community.
The two entities are in the design phase of creating a YMCA location in Shorewood that would also provide a site for some of the village’s park and recreation programs, explained Natalie
Engel, economic development director for the village of Shorewood. The village and the YMCA, a nonprofit organization, would share the construction costs and have outlined a multi-decade agreement. Plans for the YMCA include a large gym and an indoor pool. It would provide programming such as its popular summer camp, helping to fill a void in the community when it comes to summer
programming for school-age children.
The target is to open the facility in 2026, Engel said.
While the village and the YMCA create indoor recreation opportunities, the village of Shorewood continues to move forward on its newest outdoor park, River’s Edge Park.

Located along the DuPage River and off River Road, the 32-acre park will be constructed in phases, over the course of several years.
Engel said the village sought community input in designs and concepts and the feedback was to create a more natural park with trails, trees, a pollinator garden, play areas and river access for kayaks.
“We had the public guide us in the design,” Engel said.
A local franchisee is bringing We Rock the Spectrum to Shorewood, providing a gym and activity center for children that also serves those with special needs with its sensory equipment. The center will provide a location for indoor play for children as well as serve as a location for physical therapy.
For adults, there’s excitement on the construction of the X-Golf in Shorewood Crossing. An indoor facility, X-Golf will include multiple stations where individuals and small groups can use golf simulators to practice or play a round at a world-famous course. Engel said the business plans to launch leagues and have a golf pro on site to provide lessons. There will be a small sports bar located inside the facility. Construction is underway
and the target is to open the Shorewood location later this fall.
Construction is underway on the Dollar Tree within the shopping center that has Home Depot. Shorewood was tapped to be the first U.S. location for the Canadian restaurant chain BarBurrito. Known for its Tex-Mex menu, a franchise is interested in leasing a space in Shorewood Crossing under the restaurant name Barrio Burrito Bar, Engel said.
In residential developments, Engel said Lennar Homes is applying for permits to begin construction in 2025 of the Town Center 2 development, the creation of 139 single-family homes. She said Lennar is also interested in creating another residential development in Shorewood and is in the concept phase of the second development.
Also looking to start construction in 2025 is Hamptons of Shorewood, a mixed-use development that includes commercial, residential spaces and recreational space located near the Towne Center. The development includes a mixture of first-floor retail and upper floor residential units as well as townhomes with attached garages and rental homes.

Safety and security continue to be a top priority for Plainfield Community Consolidated School District 202 with further facility enhancements completed at all 31 schools this summer.
This summer the school district’s technology staff installed lockdown buttons in more than 3,700 classrooms across district schools, explained Superintendent Glenn Wood.
While it is already largely in practice, the district will continue to promote door safety in the schools and the expectation that all classroom doors are locked and closed.
“Security and safety is our top priority,” Wood said, adding that the district has implemented facility improvements aimed at improved safety and security for the past three summers.
He continued, “The door policy is really
the safest, fastest and most effective way to deter an active shooter.”
Health and safety is a top priority in the district for all of its members. This summer the district provided access to a community health clinic to provide reduced rates for student immunizations.
The district leaders continue to work on the implementation of the district’s five-year strategic plan, Wood said. This includes further review of start times at the high school and middle school and continued monitoring of school demographics. Wood said while there is no recommendation for any boundary changes for the next year, it is a subject that continues to be reviewed as new subdivisions develop. If there was a need for a boundary change in the future it would be inter-district, within the district’s 31 schools.
While some local schools are rolling out new cell phone policies this fall, District 202 leadership updated its policies and procedures at cell phones last school year and Wood said the response was very
positive from students, parents and staff.
“The response to the policy went very well,” Wood said.
In the policy, student cell phones are not allowed at elementary schools. At middle schools students may have a cell phone but it must remain in their lockers during the school day. At high schools students may access their phones outside of the classroom instruction time, such as during lunch periods and while passing between classes. Additionally, staff can ask a student to put their phone away and can refer to the policy if additional follow up, consequences are necessary, Wood said.
“We have armed our staff with the knowledge of our support for their decision to uphold the policy,” Wood said.

Riding the school bus has never been cooler for students at Troy Community Consolidated School District 30-C.
The district has completed equipping the buses in its transportation fleet with air conditioning. It seems every September there’s a warm weather spell that descends on the area. And when that occurs this year, students won’t be uncomfortable during their rides to and from school, explained Sarah Wells, director of communications for Troy School District 30-C.
“By keeping the kids and the bus driver cool, we are keeping everybody feeling better and the students will be better able to learn,” Wells said.
The district has about 50 buses in the fleet it manages for the school district, Wells said.
As students returned to the classroom on Aug 21 many were greeted by fresh new faces to the district. Troy 30-C welcomes 60 new staff, including teachers and other professionals, to its classrooms this year. The district has also implemented

new administrative positions with the addition of two new deans at the middle school that serves seventh and eighth grade students and at the intermediate school that serves fifth and sixth grade students.
Troy 30-C serves residents from portions of Joliet, Shorewood, Channahon, Crest Hill and unincorporated Troy Township. It has one middle school, one intermediate school and five elementary schools that serve students in Pre-K through 4th grades.
An exciting new element is the addition of new, interactive display boards installed in classrooms. The district will install the interactive display boards in every classroom across the district during
the next few years. The LCD display boards enable teachers to project work and students can interact directly with the screens, whether solving mathematical equations or composing sentences.
The district completed the development of its threeyear strategic plan that was approved by the Board of Education, but the plan isn’t merely on a shelf. Throughout the district work is underway to implement the plan, Wells said.
“The plan is there, but there is so much work to continue,” Wells said.
A part of the plan includes a rebranding of the district with the new tagline, “Together we learn, grow, and achieve.”
