Route 26 bridge over I-80 in Princeton dedicated to Staff Sgt. Lincoln Hollinsaid ‘People are going to drive across this bridge and his name will be there’

jeustice@shawmedia.com After years of behind-the-scenes work, State Sen. Win Stoller’s legislation to name the Route 26 bridge over Interstate 80 in Princeton as the Staff Sgt. Lincoln Hollinsaid Memorial Bridge was officially brought to fruition April 12.

Hollinsaid grew up in Lake Wildwood, graduated from Princeton High School and enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1995. He rose to the rank of staff sergeant and was killed in action while serving in Iraq on April 7, 2003.

Hollinsaid was tasked with taking down a wall the platoon didn’t realize covered enemy troops on the other side.

Once the wall was taken down, Hollinsaid was hit and killed by small arms fire and an RPG before the rest of the platoon could take out the enemy troops.

While serving, Hollinsaid requested a transfer to a different division so he would have a greater chance of serving in combat.

“This bridge here is over I-80, which is one of our nation’s premier highways and also has the Flags of Freedom flying over it,” said Dan Hollinsaid, Lincoln Hollinsaid’s father. “I cannot think of a better way to honor and remember Lincoln.”

Lincoln Hollinsaid was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting and fishing and loved most of all his family, friends and his country.

“I am beyond honored to have played a role in ensuring that his name and legacy will be enshrined and remembered by our future generations,” Stoller (R-Germantown Hills) said.

“Lincoln Hollinsaid, or Link as his friends and family called him, was an American hero who bravely put his life on the line in defense and service of our nation,” Stoller said.

Stoller was excited to see the many years of work finally become a reality.

The legislation that made the naming possible was passed during the early morning hours on Saturday, April 9.

“Almost 19 years ago to this day, Staff Sgt. Hollinsaid made the ultimate sacrifice for our country when he was killed in action while serving in Iraq,” Stoller said.

“Naming this bridge in his honor is the least that we as a nation and state can do.”

During the April 12 event, the Hollinsaid family was presented with the legislative resolution from the Illinois General Assembly, officially naming the bridge after their son.

Dan Hollinsaid said he was incredibly proud to pursue and accomplish this

honor in memory of his son and the sacrifice he made for his country.

“People are going to drive across this bridge and his name will be there,” Dan said. “When they see his name, some of them are going to remember him while others may ask the question, ‘Who was Staff Sgt. Lincoln Hollinsaid?’ As his father, it is up to me to make sure that Link is remembered, which is why we pursued this naming.”

Quiram said the commemoration will create a great tribute to Lincoln Hollinsaid for generations to come.

“There is no finer tribute to Staff Sgt. Lincoln Hollinsaid than to name this prominent bridge in Princeton in his memory,” Quiram said. “This enduring tribute will forever remind us of his valiant sacrifice for our country.”

Quiram said there will be signs placed on the bridge to commemorate the occasion by the Illinois Department of Transportation and the city plans to host a dedication ceremony during the Homestead Festival.

Putnam County Rotary to host Post-Prom Afterglow on May 7 The Putnam County Rotary will be sponsoring the Post-Prom Afterglow on Saturday, May 7, immediately following the prom and lasting until about 2 a.m. at the PC Primary School Gym in Granville.

The event is free for all Putnam County High School juniors, seniors and their dates, including those who didn’t attend prom.

The Rotary hopes to discourage any possible post-prom parties or activities

that would draw students away and asks parents to encourage their students to attend and allow them to stay until the prize-winning end.

The group’s hope is that through 100% participation, the community can help ensure a safe, fun and memorable prom experience for everyone.

This year’s Afterglow “Carnival” experience will include carnival games, a bags tournament, darts and balloons, Plinko and Skee-Ball, in addition to a fun

mock casino in which students will use play money and gather winnings for use in an auction for valuable prizes at the end of the night.

Through the support of many donations, the Rotary is able to offer a party with prizes to be won throughout the event. Gifts include Apple watches, a laptop computer, a Yeti cooler, a dorm fridge, microwave and other electronic gifts, restaurant and shopping gift certificates and many other items. Some gifts

will be auctioned at the end of the night.

Other gifts are raffle drawings, including cash prizes, so that all students have a chance to win prizes. Every student also will receive an Afterglow T-shirt with this year’s theme art if the student is present at evening’s end.

The Afterglow has become a part of the PCHS prom tradition and is something students look forward to as an extension of the evening, according to a Putnam County Rotary news release.

Nationals to feature 400 to 500 entries and 6 days of racing

That means there will be no camping in the football field this year, but you can reserve a spot in what was the baseball field to the west of the lakefront. It is a short walk from the lakefront. You can reserve both a pit spot and a camping spot by going to depue22.com to register.

The Pro classes that DePue fans are used to seeing will be run in the afternoons from Wednesday to Sunday. The Modified and Junior classes will be running each morning. The Modified division runs the same kinds of boats as the Pro division with speeds from 50 mph up to close to 100 mph for the 850CC hydro class. The difference is the Modified’s boats run on gas and oil while the Pro classes run on methanol with speeds well over 100 mph.

I would expect there will be several drivers who will run the Modified class as well as jump into the methanol boats.

For the first time, the Nationals will include Junior classes in both Runabouts and Hydros and an outstanding group of youngsters will be represented from all over the country as they race on Lake DePue in what probably will be the largest audience in their careers. These youngsters will be running a stock motor capable of about 50 mph, and I would expect a few to jump into a pro division called K-Pro for younger racers in the Pro division.

Racing events are expected to begin on Tuesday afternoon and run through the traditional ending day on Sunday.

Racing will start about 9 a.m. and go to about 5 or 6 p.m. each day.

A total of about 160 heats will be contested over the six days. So get there early each day, mark your viewing spots and enjoy great food at the DePue Men’s Club shelter and from vendors along the lakefront. There also will be a beer garden. And stick around for nightly entertainment and dancing each night of the event.

DEPUE – Steve Solorio, president of the DePue Men’s Club, has received word that the American Power Boat Association has awarded the 2022 Nationals for the Pro, Modified and Junior classes to Lake DePue, with racing from Tuesday, July 26, through Sunday, July 30.

This will be the largest racing event in many years at DePue with 400 to 500 entries. Drivers will come from all over the country, as well as Canada. There will be drivers from California, Washington, Florida, Texas, Oklahoma and the East Coast, and, of course, there will be drivers from the Midwest, including fan favorites from DePue and the Illinois Valley area.

As Gene East, a leader in the Quincy Welding engine design, said, DePue is the mecca of boat racing.

All over the world, DePue is synonymous with boat racing. Mention DePue and drivers’ eyes light up. Unlimited drivers such as J. Michael Kelly and J.W. Myers have been to DePue in the past, and DePue has hosted drivers from Germany, the Czech Republic and Japan over the years.

The U.S. Title Series will be led by DePue Boat Races President Pete Nydahl, chief scorer Susan Eldridge Sailer and pit boss Paul Bosnich. The Title Series will be the host club once again for the 37th year of the Nationals boat races being held in conjunction with the DePue Men’s Club.

County Board allows construction of 3 MET towers in Macon Towers approved with a 13-5 vote, 3 members abstaining

jeustice@shawmedia.com Following the recommendation of the Bureau County Zoning Board of Appeals with a 3-2 vote, the Bureau County Board voted in favor of allowing the construction of three temporary MET towers to be built in Macon Township.

The towers are to be constructed by Leeward Renewable Energy Development and are required to be shorter than 200 feet and will be used to collect meteorological data for possible wind energy development moving forward.

The towers will be located in the northwest corner of the intersection of 1000 N. Ave. and Route 40, in the southwest corner of the intersection of 1000 N. Ave. and 1200 E. St. and on the north side of 600 N. Ave., about half a mile west of Route 40.

Before the vote took place, board member Connie Stetson initiated a discussion and voiced her opposition to the MET towers.

County,” Stetson said. “How many wind turbines do we need? Is this going to be good for tourism, all of these turbines everywhere? Think about the red lights everywhere.”

Board member Jim Donarski responded to Stetson verifying that the April 12 vote was not to allow wind turbines but to allow the proposed MET towers.

“For some reason here, I think we are kind of missing the point,” Donarski

said. “As far as I can see we are not voting for any wind towers. We are voting for meteorological towers.”

“MET towers lead into turbines,” Stetson said in response.

After hearing public comments from concerned Bureau County residents, the board voted in favor of the construction of the towers with a 13-5 vote, with three members abstaining.

The board members who voted for approval included Derek Whited, John

Baracani, Joseph Bickett, Keith Cain, Ronald Dobrich, Donarski, Deb Feeney, Paul Humpage, Marsha Lilley, Mary Jane Marini, Kerwin Paris, Jane Piccatto and Dan Rabe.

The board members who voted against allowing the MET towers included Stetson, James Thompson, Kristi Warren, Robert McCook and Robin Rediger.

Marshann Entwhistle, Robert Albrecht and Ralph Anderson abstained from voting.

Bureau County resident Laura Rose was one of five who spoke during public comment against allowing the towers.

“While these MET towers in and of themselves are not intrusive, their end use is,” Rose said.

Rose said allowing the towers was the first step toward allowing further wind farms in the county and restated not all of the votes from the previous zoning board and appeals board were collected unanimously.

“While Leeward Energy has the right to pursue a business venture and landowners have the right to lease their land to be developed for a wind farm, other landowners in the same area have a right to oppose this business venture,” Rose said.

A sense of humor can go a long way while coping with life’s challenges.

Years ago, when I was an intern at the Kansas City Star, I did a story about the link between humor and health, specifically as it relates to treating cancer. Still, the principle applies to just about everything.

Laughter is good medicine.

So it’s probably not surprising that in dealing with my husband’s Alzheimer’s disease, Tony and I try to find the humor in this very dark situation.

The progressive neurological disease that is taking away a lot of the man I married thankfully has not stolen Tony’s sense of humor.

One of Tony’s most endearing qualities has always been his ability to laugh in the face of the worst crises. He could be counted on for a one-liner that would ease the tension in a room.

His quick wit could find humor just about anywhere.

Since he was a firefighter and a journalist, he was well-versed in the humor that might be a little dark for the rest of the world. As a boss, he used levity to motivate and comfort his employees.

When I was falling for this wonder-

VIEWS Joan Oliver ful guy, we discovered a mutual appreciation for the movie “The Princess Bride,” which is one of the most delightfully funny movies around. We enjoyed the antics of Monty Python, both the movies and the TV show.

When I found out he also is a fan of Dr. Seuss, I knew I had found my other half.

Our first date, we watched reruns of Monty Python episodes. For years, we would quote lines from “Monty Python and The Holy Grail” at each other, which invariably would morph into lines from “The Princess Bride.” “Anybody want a peanut?”

We cracked each other up. All it would take was a raised eyebrow from one of us to get the other one laughing.

Usually, it was because we’d see something and both find it funny.

If anything, our sense of humor was a bit on the “dry” side, but it usually was witty and gentle. Tony helped me get over my penchant for sarcasm,

which too often is cruel and mean-spirited.

As his Alzheimer’s disease has progressed, those wonderful one-liners have disappeared. I miss them more than I can say.

Yet, my Tony retains some semblance of his sense of humor. Occasionally I’ll even get an eyebrow raise.

Most times I even can still figure out the inside joke.

When he watches TV with me, he will occasionally find a commercial to be funny. I’ll watch him chuckle to himself or he’ll look at me to see if I’m laughing, too.

When we were watching the movie “The Martian” recently, Tony seemed to be able to follow a lot of the one-liners of the character portrayed by Matt Damon. Then again, he also might have been mimicking my laughter.

Either way, we both seemed to enjoy it.

Happily, I’ve always been one to make fun of myself in a lighthearted way, particularly when I drop things or make a lot of noise. Tony has always found that to be a source of humor, and he still does.

Although his humor is less highbrowed and more toward “The Three

Stooges” these days, I’m thankful that it’s still there. Even if the humor involves pratfalls and embarrassing noises.

One problem, though, is that it’s so much harder to tell when Tony is playing around and when he’s not. For instance, he finds throwing his T-shirt at my head to be hilarious. That is, unless he’s unhappy with taking it off and throws it at me to show his displeasure. The facial expression is the same.

I remind myself to just assume that he’s goofing around. If he is, then I’m happy to be in on the joke. If he’s not, well, that becomes abundantly clear.

I’ll be the first to admit that as the years have passed and my caregiving duties have increased, it’s been harder to find the humor.

Yet, I know it’s there. I just have to look around.

Or trip. Because these days, that’s good for a laugh. Just ask Tony.

Former GED graduate establishes a $1,000 IVCC scholarship Shaw Local News Network Taylor Richards of Olathe, Kansas, has established a scholarship at Illinois Valley Community College more than a decade after she received her GED from the college.

Richards was honored in 2010-11 for her accomplishments while overcoming formidable obstacles and she told her story at GED graduation.

She recently reached back from her Kansas home to create a $1,000 annual award at IVCC for adult women who are GED graduates.

“IVCC has a special place in my heart because I would not be where I am today without its GED program,” Richards said.

Richards credits Sara Escatel, Cindy Lock and retired coordinator Mary Gross of IVCC’s Adult Education program for her success.

“They were all amazing. IVCC is such a great school,” Richards says.

Lock remembers Richards well.

“Taylor faced obstacles head-on and persevered to achieve her High School Equivalency (GED) and transitioned successfully into higher education. It is

inspiring to see what she has made of her life,” Lock said. “And it is so kind of her to give back to help other students.”

When Richards, then Taylor Sulgrove, arrived at IVCC in August 2009 she did not know multiplication and struggled with spelling and grammar.

By the time she earned her GED in May 2010, she was on her way.

“Education is so important,” Richards said. “I started a scholarship to encourage women to take care of themselves. Going back to school is hard. If this helps someone, that’s all that matters.”

When husband Tanner changed jobs, Richards moved to Kansas City and attended Johnson County Community College for a year before transferring to Kansas University. She graduated in 2016 with a bachelor’s in business administration.

She worked at K-State Olathe as an events coordinator before returning home to raise children Julia and Lilian.

Today, a third daughter, Faith, is on the way.

“I do have my degree if I ever need it,” she said. “It is so important to be able to take care of yourself.”

Isha Gollapundi of Normal Community High School had her piece “Golden Repair” selected as LaHood’s winner. It will be displayed in the halls of the nation’s Capitol Building in Washington D.C. There were 142 entries from 12 schools throughout LaHood’s 18th Congressional District, which includes all of Marshall and Woodford counties among several others in central Illinois.

The competition was hosted at the Peoria Riverfront Museum. Participants were judged anonymously by a select, volunteer panel and award winners were determined by a cumulative vote. The artwork will be displayed at the Peoria Riverfront Museum through April 30 for free viewing.

Results from a fresh analysis of evidence from the Starved Rock murders still are pending, so a La Salle County judge has moved a hearing until Aug. 1.

On April 13, Judge Michael C. Jansz continued a hearing in the case of Chester Weger, now 83, who was paroled in 2019 after serving six decades for murder.

Last fall, Jansz granted Weger’s request to have an independent lab analyze several pieces of evidence collected from the crime scene inside Starved Rock State Park. There, three suburban women were found bludgeoned to death.

Seneca scores 3 in 7th to slip past host PC

bhoxsey@shawmedia.com GRANVILLE – Like many sports, baseball is about taking advantage of opportunities when they are presented, especially late in a tight contest.

Seneca did just that in the seventh inning of the April 12 Tri-County Conference matchup against host Putnam County in a 7-5 victory at a windy Ken Jenkins Field.

Down a run in the final inning, Paxton Giertz reached on a dropped third strike to lead off, Matt Cruise was hit by a pitch, and Bryce Roe walked to load the bases. Tyler Sulzberger smacked the first pitch he saw from Panthers reliever and losing pitcher Troy Petty to the fence in center, scoring the tying and go-ahead runs. Later in the inning, Austin Aldridge drew a bases-loaded walk to finish the day’s scoring.

“Coach said to all of us going into the inning, ‘If it’s your pitch, hit it,’ ” said Sulzberger, who also doubled in the second. “I thought it had a chance of going out because it felt like I hit the [heck] out of it. I rounded first, and Bryce was still on second ... I was like ‘Shoot,’ but then I realized we scored two runs and had the lead.

“It was a great feeling to be able to come through in that situation and help the team win today.”

Giertz, who had come in to pitch in the sixth, closed the game, finishing with one walk and three strikeouts in two scoreless innings to earn the win.
