Andersen murder trial date scheduled for July 9

Deborah Dewey murder suspect to face 65 prosecution witnesses

BY DAVE COOK news@putnamcountyrecord.com HENNEPIN — Attorneys for Clifford A. Andersen Jr. argued against a continuance request from the prosecution, as well as the admission of video evidence, during the murder suspect’s hearing on April 19 in Putnam County Circuit Court.

Andersen, 67, of Standard, is charged with murdering his sister-in-law, Deborah Dewey, and concealing her body.

Dewey, 62, of Ladd was reported missing in August 2016.

Her body was found Debra on Sept. 12, 2016, in a Dewey shallow grave in a yard of a Standard home for which Andersen was caretaker.

Police were alerted to the property following an interview with a person who had knowledge about the case. One day after Dewey’s body was found in Standard, police arrested Andersen.

The prosecution made the continuance request to Judge Stephen Kouri during a previous conference call during which both sides had agreed to waive the need for Andersen’s presence. The request was made because new evidence continues to arrive from investigators, and the defense argued for Andersen’s right to a speedy trial.

Assistant Illinois Attorney General Bill Elward countered that all previously granted continuances

had been agreed upon by both sides and that made the speedy trial issue not yet relevant.

Kouri granted the request after saying it would be best for both sides to not have to be Clifford in a rush to be prepared, Andersen Jr. and he set the date for a financial evidence motions hearing for May 7.

Andersen’s lawyers, Drew Parker and his son, Robert Parker, of Peoria’s Parker and Parker Law Firm, also argued against the admission of video evidence that Elward said showed Andersen driving Dewey’s car into a truck stop. He also said Andersen intentionally left Dewey’s car unlocked and with the keys in the ignition with hopes it would be stolen.

Elward also said Andersen then lied to police and others about his whereabouts and actions. During Elward’s description of the contents of the video and Andersen’s behavior, Andersen smiled and shook his head in disagreement.

Andersen was also smiling as he passed by Dewey’s family as he left the courtroom following the hearing.

Dewey’s gray 2007 Buick LaCrosse was found unlocked on Aug. 29, 2016, at the TA Truck Stop on state Route 47, just north of Interstate 80, in Morris. There’s also evidence showing the last calls made on Dewey’s phone were to Andersen.

After the hearing, Robert Parker

said the resolution of the video was too grainy to show anything definitive. Parker also said the financial evidence the defense wants to use is obtuse and doesn’t establish a motive. He added the reasons given by the prosecution for the continuance requests were for “the vague reason of the arrival of additional evidence.”

“More evidence is always good,” Putnam County State’s Attorney Christina Judd-Mennie said of the continuing arrival of supportive information.

It also came to the court’s attention during the hearing that Andersen hadn’t been able to fully hear what was being said during his court appearances.

“I don’t want an appeal because of a hearing issue,” Kouri said to the defense.

He then placed responsibility for getting Andersen hearing assistance on his attorneys. Amplified headphones will be the likely remedy.

Parker also said the state will be calling 65 witnesses against Andersen and added that Andersen’s health won’t be used in their defense arguments.

Kouri set the date for jury selection to begin on July 9 and blocked off two weeks for the trial. In the event there’s difficulty in selecting a local jury, Kouri said he would try to have a backup venue available in Peoria, and both sides agreed with the prudence of that decision.

Andersen remains jailed on a $150,000 cash bond.

During the patrols, troopers made zero arrests for driving under the influence and one arrest for other alcohol/ drug citations. One citation was issued for an occupant restraint offense.

Troopers also issued one citation and three warnings for registration offenses and three citations and three warnings for driver’s license offenses.

A total of eight citations and 41 warnings were given during

the patrols.

Alcohol and drug impairment is a factor in more than 30 percent of all fatal motor vehicle crashes in Illinois.

Over half of all fatal crashes in Illinois occur at night. The NITE program allows officers to work even harder at removing dangerous impaired drivers from the road and making sure everyone is buckled up.

This project is funded through the Illinois Department of Transportation.

ILLINOIS STATE POLICE Nighttime Enforcement Patrol results announced LASALLE — Illinois State Police (ISP) District 17 announced the results of Nighttime Enforcement (NITE) patrols in LaSalle County during April.

These NITE patrols allowed the ISP to focus on preventing, detecting and taking enforcement action in response to impaired driving and occupant restraint violations, especially between the hours of 9 p.m.

Henderson’s next court date is May 10 Judge in Bradley murder case grants extended media coverage request

BY DAVE COOK news@putnamcountyrecord.com HENNEPIN — Attorney Roger Bolin, public defender for Richard A. Henderson, the Standard man whom investigators believe stabbed and killed 16-year-old Diamond Bradley, said he’s continuing to receive discovery evidence from the prosecution during Richard A. Henderson’s April 17 Henderson status hearing.

Henderson, 26, is charged with the Class 3 felony of concealment of a homicide death and is being held on a $1 million bond. Putnam County State’s Diamond Attorney Christina Judd-Mennie reportBradley ed the state is still waiting for the lab results of multiple tests.

Judge Stephen A. Kouri said he needed to make a ruling regarding an extended media request and asked Bolin whether he had any objections.

“I’m not prepared to respond because I don’t know what it

involves,” Bolin said.

Kouri explained how he’d handled such requests during previous trials and told Bolin the media’s presence hadn’t been noticeable. Bolin then said he had no objections if it didn’t interfere with the way the trial was conducted.

Kouri then approved the request and said he would set forth the parameters for media coverage, such as the recording of witnesses on the stand as they testified.

It’s expected Henderson will face additional charges as the state’s evidence against him continues to be compiled.

“More charges will likely be filed against Richard A. Henderson as the investigation progresses,” Putnam County Sheriff Kevin Doyle said Feb. 6 during a news conference at the Spring Valley Police Department shortly after the arrest was made.

During the ongoing investigation, the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office developed information that Henderson may have discarded a weapon at Color Point, the commercial greenhouse in rural Granville where he’d been employed.

On April 11, the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office was assisted in a search by Tri-DENT, Illinois State Police Crime Scene Services, the Spring Valley Police Department and the LaSalle County Sheriff’s Office.

The recovered weapon, a knife, is being analyzed at the Illinois State Police Crime Scene Services laboratory.

Bradley was last was seen by her family the evening of Jan. 23 and was reported missing the following morning. Her body, stabbed multiple times, was found Jan. 27 alongside 850th North Road in Putnam County.

According to Doyle, investigators think the two met online and that Henderson picked the teen up near her home between 6:30 and 7:30 a.m. on Jan. 24. He then allegedly drove to the spot where her body was found and killed her after an altercation.

Henderson was arrested after being interviewed at the police station. Tips, interviews, surveillance cameras and pings from Bradley’s cellphone link him to her death, Doyle has said.

Judge Kouri set the date for the next status hearing for 2 p.m. on May 10.

Although the results of multiple lab reports have yet to be received, Doyle said investigators are confident they’ve arrested the man responsible for Bradley’s murder.

Kevin E. Kunkel, Putnam County treasurer, was awarded the 2017 Zone IV Treasurer of the Year award on April 10 at the spring conference of Illinois County Treasurers in Springfield. The award is for distinguished service to the Illinois County Treasurer’s Association. Zone IV is the northern 24 counties of Illinois. The award is voted by the treasurers in the zone. Kunkel is the Zone IV chairman.

Board OKs more school safety measures Metal detectors, hiring of off-duty officers approved

GRANVILLE — The Putnam County School Board continues to discuss options to improve security in the wake of recent school shootings across the country.

“This is about the things we can do right now,” board member Laurie Glenn said at the April 16 board meeting.

The board discussed the installation of exit alarms on doors and agreed to get a cost estimation before proceeding further.

The board then approved the purchase of two hand-held metal detectors at a cost of $250 each.

They’re expected to mainly be used at Putnam County Junior High School and Putnam County

High School, and the district will develop a policy regarding their use before their implementation during the next school year.

The board also approved the hiring of Carl Carlson off-duty police officers Putnam at a minimum of $20 per County School hour to provide securi- superintenty during highly attenddent ed school functions.

Discussions then turned to the possibility of requiring vendors to wear identification. Board member Jason Judd recommended vendors be charged $150 per employee to fund background checks and the cost of the identification.

“This cost should be on the vendors, not the taxpayers, and it will be the cost of doing business with the Putnam County School District,” Judd said.

Other board members argued that established vendors shouldn’t be included, and Judd’s concern focused on a scenario of shooters

High school Principal Clayton Theisinger said the larger safety issue was in the layout of the building and ensuring everyone checks in at the office before they have further access.

The board decided to table the issue for future discussion.

In other board news • The state owes the district $393,687.21 in mandated funding.

More than $280,000 of the owed monies is for transportation costs.

• Licensed daycare provider Lindsey Sabotta of Granville spoke to the board to request her location, as well as the locations of other licensed providers in Hennepin, Standard, Granville, and Hennepin Farms, be added as regular bus stops.

“This will benefit our children, as well as the working parents of Putnam County,” she said.

• The board tabled the renewal of the contract with LaSalle’s Hillman Pediatric Therapy Services

after Judd requested the district put the job out for bidding in order to secure the lowest costs.

• The board approved a change to the district’s summer school program, which will return it to a four-day-a-week program to be held during the two weeks before the next school year begins.

• The district will be waiving Casimir Pulaski Day after it received no objections.

• Junior high students Eli Postula and Isaac Wujek recently competed at the regional science fair competition at Northern Illinois University. Their experiment on the effects that music has on people as they exercise was selected to advance to the upcoming state competition.

• The board got to see five costumed Putnam County Elementary School fifth-graders perform their Living Wax Museum roles portraying historical and popular culture figures Rosa Parks, Albert Einstein, Paul Revere, Steve Irwin and Steve Jobs.

PERU — Enis M. (Piacentini) Barnato, 92, of Peru, formerly of Mark, passed away peacefully in Manor Court in Peru on Wednesday, April 18, 2018.

She was born July 21, 1925, to Alfonso and Eliza (Pattussi) Piacentini. She married John Barnato on Sept. 15, 1945.

She was a graduate of Mark Grade School and Hopkins Township High School, class of 1943, after which she began employment at Sampsel – Soring in Spring Valley. She later became an employee of Westclox Corp. in Peru, where she worked for several years.

She also farmed with her husband for 16 years. She was then employed as a secretary for Farmers Insurance Group office in Oglesby, where she worked for 25 years.

Upon retirement, both Enis and her husband, John, toured Alaska for 31 days and for their 50th wedding anniversary they visited Italy and Switzerland for 31 days.

Her hobby was cooking Italian foods, at which she was very, very good. She was an excellent homemaker.

She was a lifetime member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church and its Altar and Rosary Society.

Survivors include her sisterin-law, Adelaine Eschenbaum of Spring Valley; two nieces and a nephew, Kathryn (Gordon) Virgo of Spring Valley, George (Victoria) Eschenbaum of Spring Valley and Rita (Gordon) Armstrong of Peru; one great-niece, Heather Virgo; and one great-nephew, Alan Eschenbaum.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, John; two brothers, Lt. Irvin Piacentini and Lodovico Piacentini; and two sisters, Dena Puccetti and Irene Ann Rinaldi.

A Mass of Christian burial was held Saturday, April 21, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Granville with Father Patrick DeMeulemeester officiating. Burial was in Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery in Granville. Visitation was held prior to the service Saturday at the church.

ZEARING — Arlene A. Richards, 90, of Zearing passed away Monday, April 16, 2018.

Arlene was born Dec. 18, 1927, in Hall Township, Ill., to Otto E. and Lillian L. (Weissenburger) Koerner. She married Roger L. Richards July 3, 1946, at the St. Johns Lutheran Church on the Hill in Princeton.

She was a graduate of Malden High School, class of 1944. She worked at General Telephone Company as a local operator and Westclox in Peru until she started her family.

She was a member of St. Matthews Lutheran Church in Princeton, and enjoyed playing cards and spending time with family and friends.

Rezin backs legislation to target phone scammers Robo-calls are a top complaint SPRINGFIELD — State Sen. Sue Rezin, R-Morris, is co-sponsoring legislation that would help reduce unwanted robo-calls, the No. 1 complaint to the Federal Trade Commission.

“Robo-calls are annoying, frustrating, and they seem to never end,” Rezin said. “It’s time we beef up our laws on this issue to protect consumers from this unwanted practice.”

Under Rezin’s Senate Bill 2573, robo-callers would face a separate violation if they disguise or falsify their caller ID in any way, which is commonly known as “spoofing.”

In addition, Rezin’s legislation would require prior written consent before robo-callers could use auto-dialer software. The Illinois attorney general would be given the responsibility of enforcement.

“While most people hang up when

they hear, ‘Congratulations, you’ve won a free cruise,’ the problem is, some of our more vulnerable citizens think it’s real,” Rezin said.

“They are taken advantage of, getting State Sen. swindled out of their Sue Rezin money or personal R-Morris information.

These 38th District callers are scammers, they threaten, and they prey on people until they can hit a payday. This legislation puts more teeth into our laws, allowing the Illinois attorney general to take action in the same way the federal government can do now.”

According to the Federal Trade Commission, U.S. consumers received about 2.4 billion robo-calls every month in 2016.

Rezin is also co-sponsoring other legislation (Senate Joint Resolution 59) that would create the bipartisan Illinois Automated Dialing and Solicitation Task Force.

The group would be responsible for studying penalties for violating the Do Not Call List and penalties

for call spoofing, and seeing what new technology is available for preventing automated calls, among other responsibilities.

The Federal Trade Commission provides an online resource for consumers if they are seeking ways to block unwanted phone calls.

The web address is consumer.ftc. gov/articles/0548-blocking-unwanted-calls.

On April 17, Senate Bill 2573 passed the Judiciary Committee as amended, 11-0, and on the same day was placed on calendar order of second reading, according to the Illinois General Assembly website.

Rezin’s 38th Senate District includes southeastern Bureau County, Putnam County and LaSalle County.

Village board extends McCoy Street project

BY DAVE COOK news@putnamcountyrecord.com GRANVILLE — The bumpy roadway known to Granville residents as McCoy Street will soon be a smooth ride all the way to Silverspoon Avenue after the approval of a project change order by the village board.

During its April 17 meeting, the board approved the $35,000 change

order to the long-awaited McCoy Street project scheduled for this summer.

Even with this addition, the project will still come in far below the initially estimated Jared Baker Granville vilcost of $550,000.

LaSalle’s Universal lage president Asphalt & Excavating was awarded the contract after submitting a bid of $368,231. Richetta previously said because the bids were lower than expected, the contractor was also willing to extend

the reach of the project in both directions if the village wanted to do so.

“We’ll also be planning to improve the driveway entrance to the alley that runs to the west between Main Street and Front Street so it’s not so steep,” Richetta added.

Richetta said the contracts for the resurfacing project would soon be ready for signatures. Work on McCoy Street is expected to begin in either May or June, and it should be completed in time for the annual Granville Cruise.

he dahlia bulbs sit under the chair in the foyer. The gloves are handy, and the light jacket hangs on the hook.

The tools are sharpened and oiled. Oh, those are the ones I put away two years ago. The tools from last year have clumps of dried mud.

It seems they were neglected.

So, in spite of my relaxed approach to all things gardening, I am ready.

So-o-o-o, where are the warm sun rays and the warm breeze and the fluffy clouds, and the warm earth, and … oh well. So what, I say.

When IT does come, we will have a great time and forget to grumble.

This is an important month for people who have experienced violence and sexual assault. It is

Because, it can happen anywhere, anytime to anyone. This includes older folks.

Stay with me a minute. Someone may feel safe enough to come to an older person, even a child. If they even hint or tell you about someone hurting them in some way, tell authorities. You can call Freedom House, and they will tell you what to do. Always believe them.

I trust you all, and it makes me feel better to talk to you about this life work of mine and of so many others.

There is nothing funnier than newborn animals. Sometimes you get to see little calves jumping around in fields with their moms close by. Or pictures of kittens and puppies on TV that programs show.

Why are they so funny to us?

Maybe it is the innocence of their stumbling, rolling and playing that intrigues us so much. They seem to know how to play as soon as they are born. Maybe we should all be a little playful at times.

I grew up watching mares and colts in a nearby pasture. The older colts would race and jump around, showing off, and the littler ones would attempt to run along. Noth-

ing doing — the mares put a stop to that very quickly. With a big nose and a shove, the very young got moved back to safety.

Every spring the same routine went on. Later in the summer, in the same pasture, with no moms to stop them, the yearlings and colts ran as fast as they could, as they were born to do. Later, with sulkies and harness they still tried to outrun each other.

Thank goodness we don’t have to race anybody. That would really be a sight!

To elites, downstate isn’t on their radar W

hen I was a kid politician in the 1960s, titans of commerce and industry often served on appointed boards in Illinois, especially those for higher education. No longer, it seems.

Instead, the elites of commerce, technology, industry, law, and financial services focus their influential efforts on Chicagoland. They serve through the likes of the Chicago Economic Club, the Commercial Club of Chicago, Chicago Ideas Week, World Business Chicago, the Chicago Club, and 1871 (a Chicago incubator).

You see “Illinois” anywhere in that list?

Elites tend to focus on matters of direct concern to them, like business, family, social circles. Illinois as a state and its government aren’t on their radar screens.

The state of Illinois is basically responsible for education, higher education, transportation, social services and health care.

Yet, elites in Chicagoland send their kids to private schools or good suburban public schools, which don’t rely on state dollars.

Later, elites send their youngsters East and to other, well, elite private colleges.

As for transportation, the one-percenters mostly fly; they don’t drive state highways much. That’s why Chicago mayor Rahm Emanuel

UNDERSTANDING ILLINOIS Jim Nowlan recently announced a breathtaking $8.5 billion program to keep cityowned O’Hare International among the best-connected airports in the world.

In contrast, the state of Illinois hasn’t since 2010 had a major infrastructure program to maintain its deteriorating but rich network of interstates and feeder highways.

And, of course, elites don’t use the state’s social services and health care programs, which care for 3 million to 4 million lesser mortals in our state.

Downstate Illinois, in particular, is becoming a backwater. In very recent years, ADM and CAT moved their headquarters to Chicagoland from Decatur and Peoria, respectively. CAT and insurance behemoth State Farm have been slowly, maybe not so slowly, moving jobs out of Illinois.

The state capital in Springfield is sleepyville except for the few weeks each year the state Legislature is in session. Chicago lawmakers would much rather serve on the Chicago City Council than trek down to Springpatch.

I recently ended a 4-year term on the state ethics commission (yes, we have one; doesn’t have much power).

We had 12 meetings each year, 11 of which were in Chicago.

Even agriculture, downstate’s mega-force, doesn’t much need Illinois, either. Farm policy is set in D.C., and it’s the national, not state, commodities and livestock trade groups that count for them.

State governorships are often seen as stepping stones to the presidency, which might make Illinois politics attractive to the ambitious rich and famous. Yet the quagmire of our present dysfunctional state government offers but a killing field for anyone so inclined to try it.

There are pockets of energy downstate. Peter Limberger, actually a German who has adopted his wife’s central Illinois, is an economic development spark plug along the Illinois-Michigan Canal corridor from Ottawa to LaSalle.

Ditto for Jason Anderson and his team in bustling Rochelle, and also for the entrepreneurial missionaries in the Schultz family of Effingham.

There are others, I’m sure, but not enough.

And the University of Illinois, in out-of-the-way Urbana-Champaign, remarkably holds on somehow as one of the world’s great universities.

State policymakers have no clue

about and offer little support for the creative power of a great graduate research center in a world now dominated by rapid advances in technology and engineering.

Yet Illinois does matter, even if the power elites don’t realize it. Just go back to the top and review the basic functions of state government.

But as we know, Illinois is a mess right now. So, where to start?

As a broken-down former prof, I nominate our system of public higher education, which is really hurting.

Students flee, universities shrivel.

This, when we could be a magnet for students from other states, as we are indeed for those from China and other countries.

Yet we have too much capacity and administrative overhead in higher ed; hurting university campuses are understandably hunkered down, protecting their shrinking bases.

We need a band of powerful top elites to organize and think about what Illinois higher education must do, for the sake of their own companies, firms and futures.

Then, they need to present a plan for the future of higher education to the Legislature and governor.

Boys First-place finishers were Kyle Lawless in the 100 meters in 14.26; Joseph Mecagni in the 200 meters in 26.75; Mike Dzierzynski in the 400 meters in 57.40; the 4x100 meter relay team of Sami Khouaja, Alex Judd, Kyle Lawless and Nolyn Thompson in 52.08; 4x200 meter relay team of Sami Khouaja, Joseph Mecagni, Federico Cecchini and Kaleb Wright in 1:47.50; Ian Woitynek in the long jump with a leap of 16-7 and in the triple jump with a leap of 33-6; and Luke Griffith in the shot put with a throw of 47-0.5 and in the discus with a throw of 126-8.5.

Second-place finishers were Alex Judd in the 100 meters in 14.83 and 200 meters in 30.67, Wes Grimshaw in the 800 meters in 2:44.52, the 4x400 meter relay team of Ian Woitynek, Kyle Lawless, Clay Newsome and Wes Grimshaw in 4:42.64; Nolyn Thompson in the triple jump (31-7), and Kaleb Wright in the shot put (39-1.5).

Third-place finishers were Caden Smith in the 400 meters in 1:14.30, Wes Grimshaw in the long jump (13-5), Clay Newsome in the triple jump (283), Joseph Mecagni in the shot put (37-8.5), and Kaleb Wright in the discus (114-6).

Panthers beat Pearl City and Amboy; lose twice to OM The Panthers lost twice to Ottawa Marquette this past week, but beat Amboy and Pearl City.

Putnam County 13, Pearl City 3 The Panthers cruised to a 13-3 win in five innings over Pearl City on April 21. Putnam County had six hits on the game, but drew 13 walks. Max Huffstodt and Caleb Tonozzi both drove in three runs each. Brayden Holmes and Luke Olson had two RBIs each. Dan Sabotta was the winning pitcher, striking out one, walking three and allowing six hits. Putnam County scored in every inning, highlighted by a six-run third inning.

Putnam County 15, Amboy 5 Luke Olson drove in five runs with a triple and a single on April 21 while Caleb Dzierzynski had three doubles and three RBIs. Logan Kreiser had three hits (two doubles and a single).

Jacob Williams picked up the win, throwing 4.1 innings, striking out four and walking one.

Luke Olson pitched two-thirds of an inning, striking out one.

Putnam County scored in every inning, with five runs in the fifth and four in the fourth.

Lady Panthers beat Henry, lose twice to Marquette The Lady Panthers lost two of the three games they played last week.

Putnam 8, Henry 4 Morgan Hundley’s four hits and two RBIs led the Lady Panthers to a 8-4 win over Henry on April 20. Alecya Davis and Alivia Resurreccion both had two hits. Davis and Olivia Holmes both drove in two runs each. Resurreccion was the winning pitcher, going four innings, walking two and allowing four hits. Holmes threw three innings, striking out three and walking three.

PC Library District will host programs

BRIEFS Annual taco sale on May 6 GRANVILLE — Sacred Heart Altar Society of Granville will host its fifth annual taco sale on Sunday, May 6, at the Sacred Heart Parish Hall.

Orders are for carry-out only at a cost of three tacos for $7 per order. Tickets can be purchased from any Altar Society member, from Granville National Bank or by calling the parish office at 815-339-2138. Extra tacos for freezing can also be ordered in advance at a cost of $20 per dozen. Advance sales only until May 2.

Hennepin team to hold plant sale GRANVILLE — Hennepin Team, Relay for Life, will hold its annual plant sale Mother’s Day weekend, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday, May 11, and from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, May 12, at the Casey’s General Store parking lot on Route 71 in Granville. All proceeds will go to Relay for Life, American Cancer Society. The event will be held rain or shine.

Available for sale will be hanging baskets, ready-refill planters and various assorted planters. Plants are provided by Color Point in Granville.

Annual fine arts festival on May 4 GRANVILLE — The 23rd annual Hazel

Marie Boyle Fine Arts Festival will be Friday, May 4, at Putnam County High School, featuring both Putnam County junior high and high school students.

Artwork will be on display in the commons from 6 to 8 p.m. The junior high band and chorus will perform from 6 to 7 p.m. and the high school band and chorus will perform from 7 to 8 p.m. The 2018 Cultural Interpretation Contest awards will be presented during intermission.

Townwide garage sales in McNabb MCNABB — The village of McNabb will again sponsor a spring garage sale from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, May 5.

Anyone with a McNabb address who wishes to have a garage sale should call Candace Haar at 815-882-2224 and leave a message of name, address of the sale site and telephone number to get on the list. There will be no fee for the garage sale.

Ads will be placed in seven area newspapers and will be announced on WLPO-AM 1220 and WAJK-FM99.3 Radio.

The McNabb Fire Department will hold a fundraiser at the James Goldasich Community Center (fire hall) on Route 89.

Public restrooms will be available there, as well.

The Putnam County Library District has announces two upcoming programs — Bees! and the Hindenburg Disaster. Bees! will be presented at 6 p.m. Tuesday, May 1, in Magnolia. Anthony Gedritis will talk about bees and their habitat and the importance of their existence. This program is for kids and adults. Hindenburg Disaster will be presented at 6 p.m. Thursday, May 3, in Hennepin. Historian Jim Gibbons will discuss the famous Hindenburg Disaster, a horrific day in our nation’s history that killed 13 passengers, 22 crewmen and one ground crewman. He will explain the various theories on how the tragedy struck and how the disaster marked the end of airship travel as we knew it.

Stanbary attends theater camp OREGON, Ill. — Have you ever thought about going to a summer camp? Maybe taking a friend and spending a week away from home?

Sixth-grader Abbie Stanbary thought that last year. In July of 2017, she and her cousin Madison, set off to start an adventure at the Stronghold Camp & Retreat Center in Oregon, Ill. A week away from their parents, the girls enrolled in the week-long camp about Music, Art and Drama (M.A.D.). Focusing on rehearsals, prop building and an introduction to behind-the-scenes theater arts, The Stronghold Team put together a week of adventures for kids aged fourth grade through sixth grade to help guide them in learning about the theater and what goes into a production. They practiced and worked hard for a great musical finale for Friday evening of the week.

While talking to Abbie, she stated that her favorite thing outside the theater, was learning archery.

She said they had a lot fun learning how to hit the targets from different places and still reaching them. When asked if she would go again, she smiled and said, “Yes! I made new friends there. I would do the M.A.D. camp again because it was a lot of

Applications are now available for Stonier scholarships GRANVILLE — Applications are now available for the I.F. Doug Stonier and Ella Stonier Education Trust which provides for awarding college scholarships to a number of college students for the school year commencing in August.

To be eligible, each student must have resided in the township of Granville, Hennepin or Magnolia, Putnam County, for a period of three years prior to the award of a

scholarship.

The scholarships will be awarded on a basis of educational capability and financial need to students working toward a bachelor’s degree who are entering their third or fourth year of college.

Applications for a scholarship may be picked up at the Granville National Bank in Granville. Completed applications will be accepted no later than Wednesday, May 31.

Kenneth Bence and the former Sharon McCloud were married April 27, 1968, at the First Lutheran Church in Granville. Their attendants were Gary Lucas, best man, and Cathy Christensen, maid of honor.

They are the parents of two daughters, Rachel (Terry) DePauw of Tiskilwa and Jennifer Bence of Peru. They also have three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

An open house will be held from noon to 4 p.m. Sunday, April 29, at the Wyanet VFW. It is requested that gifts be omitted.

Passini and Drennen will wed July 6 Lauren Passini of Standard and Jake Drennen of Standard are announcing their engagement and approaching marriage. She is the daughter of David and Mary Frances Passini of Standard and he is the son of Bill and Ann Drennen of Standard.

The bride-elect is a 2010 graduate of St. Bede Academy and received a Bachelor of Science in 2015 from St. Francis Medical Center College of Nursing. She is currently studying at the University of Illinois-Chicago for her Doctor of Nursing Practice and will practice as an acute care pediatric nurse practitioner. She is a registered nurse in the pediatric critical care unit at OSF Healthcare Children’s Hospital of Illinois in Peoria.

PERU

PERU — Registration for Carus Corporation’s annual Summer Science Camp will begin at 8:30 a.m. Friday, April 27. The free camp, which is open to students entering sixth grade in the fall, will take place June 4-8.

This year, campers may be in for a treat — a chance to learn inside St. Bede Academy’s brand-new STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) addition. St. Bede will again house the camp, with the school’s chemistry department head, Dan Fitzpatrick, leading as camp director.

Carus is also working with the Canal Corridor Association to bring back Camp Day at the Canal. Always popular, canal day offers campers a science-filled canal boat ride and mule meet and greet.

Camp runs from 9 a.m. to noon each day with, a graduation ceremony taking place on Friday. Families are invited to celebrate the end of camp with their kids, as each student receives a camp certificate.

Casting call announced for Stage 212’s ‘Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat’ LASALLE — Director Cindy Myers has announced upcoming auditions for the summer production of Stage 212’s 50th anniversary season, “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat,” the enduringly popular musical by Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber.

Men’s auditions (high school age and above) will be at 6 p.m. Thursday, May 3. Women’s auditions (high school age and above) will be

at 6 p.m. Friday, May 4. Children’s auditions (entering grades 4-8) will be at 9 a.m. Saturday, May 5. Callbacks will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 5. All auditions will be held at the theater, 700 First St. in LaSalle.

Adults auditioning will be taught a song from the show to sing. There will be a dance audition for those interested in being a “featured dancer.” Those who have tap shoes are encouraged to bring them, as tap

experience is a plus. Children auditioning will be singing “Happy Birthday” and “My Country, ’Tis of Thee.”

“Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat” will be presented July 12-29.

Stage 212 auditions are open to all regardless of prior theatrical experience.

Princeton Jazz Festival concert will take place on April 28 PRINCETON — The sixth annual Princeton Jazz Festival concert — “Swing Sets to Swing Sets” — will take place at 7 p.m. Saturday, April 28, in Logan Junior High School’s Pannebaker Gym. The evening will include performances by the Logan Junior High School Jazz Band, the Princeton High School Jazz Band and the Princeton Community Jazz Band. Proceeds from the festival concert will support the music programs at LJHS and PHS. Admission to the concert is $5 ($3 for students and seniors), and doors open at 6:30 p.m.

Desserts will be available for purchase.
