McNabb Library prepares to plant community garden this week

MCNABB — Last year, McNabb librarian Peggy Smith received permission from the village board to plant a flower garden on the east side of the library building.

During the planning process, it was decided that a better idea might be to plant a community garden for the library with help from the University of Illinois Extension Office and local Master Gardeners. With the help of Rich Haar and his tiling abilities, a nice area was developed and plant-ready. But, then the COVID-19 pandemic hit and the library was forced to close and suspend programing.

By the beginning of May 2020, the library had plants and seeds and needed to do something with them, so Smith and the Sandberg family, along with their foreigner exchange student at the time, Valentina Daza-Guitetrez, got together and planted a community garden with donations of seeds and plants given by the University of Illinois Extension Office/Master Gardeners program.

Daza-Guitetrez was the Putnam County Rotary foreigner exchange student who stayed with the Sandberg family. Anna and Lily Sandberg, along with Annette Camp,

were big assets to the garden by watering and weeding throughout the summer. The help was greatly appreciated, Smith said.

In the garden were three different styles of tomato plants, cabbage, cauliflower, peppers, lemon cucumbers, celery and even carrots with monster sunflowers, zinnias and marigold flowers. Anyone from the community was invited to pick and use the produce.

Some of the produce was picked and set inside with the little pantry that was put in place by the Putnam County Rotary to help area families hit financially by the COVID-19 situation.

“This was the first year of learning in what we needed to do or not to do for the next year,” Smith said.

Plans are in place to get the community garden planted again this year.

“We would like to do a community garden this year with the hopes to have more help and participation of the community because it takes a lot of work to grow and keep up a garden of any size. It is a good opportunity for children to get service hours or anyone that likes to plant and doesn’t have the room or has extra time on their hands and

would like to help others,” Smith said.

The hope is to start preparing to plant as early as this week. Smith is hoping to get started by April 7, weather permitting of course.

Master Gardener program accepting online applicants For the University of Illinois Extension Master Gardener program, the last four decades can be measured by the millions of volunteer hours given to help bring horticultural help to communities across the state.

This year marks the 46th anniversary of the Illinois Master Gardener program. With more than 2,600 members today, Illinois Master Gardeners have given more than 2,309,348 volunteer hours, a value of over $46 million, to the state.

Today, Master Gardener volunteers — who come from farms, small towns, suburbs and cities — offer numerous educational opportunities related to gardening in nearly every county in the state.

The mission of the Illinois Master Gardener program is “Helping Others Learn to Grow.” After 60 hours of training in topics such as vegetable and flower gardening, insect problems and plant diseases, the

volunteers participate in programs throughout their communities.

Some of those opportunities may include speaking at garden clubs, civic groups or schools; answering calls or emails at garden help desks; establishing demonstration gardens that serve as educational tools; and educating citizens on how to establish community gardens.

You don’t have to be a gardening expert to become a Master Gardener. All you need is an interest in gardening, some time to volunteer in the community, and a desire to share your knowledge with others.

The program is more about connections; connecting people with other gardeners, with their community and with reliable resources for information. Once connections are forged, it’s time to get sowing and growing in our many meaningful community projects.

University of Illinois Extension is now accepting applications to

participate in the online Master Gardener training program. This online program allows volunteers to complete the training who may have never been able to in the past due to schedule or time conflicts.

This online, self-guided course for Illinois residents can be completed any time of day or night. Set aside about four hours per week for videos, reading manual and completing quizzes, and the training will be completed in 14 weeks.

Registration for the summer class is open until May 14, and the class will start on June 14. The registration cost for the program is $300, which includes the Master Gardener manual.

The Perry and OSF HealthCare integration journey

Editor’s note: The following piece was submitted by Perry Memorial Hospital and is part of a monthly series that will explain the integration between Perry Memorial Hospital and OSF Healthcare taking place over the next three months.

PRINCETON — The OSF HealthCare and Perry Memorial Hospital integration teams held a virtual kickoff meeting on March 9 with over 170 participants from both organizations.

The meeting focused on ensuring a successful day one, which is expected to occur on July 1. Perry team leaders learned about integration milestones and the value of team efforts across many work streams to ensure a smooth, timely transition over the next four months.

As the progress of the Perry and OSF HealthCare integration journey is shared, the first feature will focus on two foundational departments within the hospital: plant operations and information technology (IT).

Scott Hartman, vice president of operations, oversees both departments.

“Most people don’t think about plant ops or IT as integral health care delivery components,” said Hartman. “Both are expensive to maintain and are as essential to providing patient care as other medical services departments.”

Since the integration process began, OSF Mission Partners, with expertise in facilities, have visited Perry to review systems includ-

ing electrical, boilers which heat and sterilize, cooling systems and phones.

“Every Mission Partner I have worked with so far has been helpful and encouraging,” said Jeff Day, interim plant operations director.

Through his tours with OSF facility teams, Day was pleased with feedback from the OSF team that the Perry team has done a lot of things well.

“With the added OSF facility resources and standardized systems, our plant ops team will focus on becoming proactive in providing smooth and efficient operations,” he said.

Information technology is the anchor to OSF HealthCare’s innovative digital health approach. IT supports the critical systems of communications and medical information.

Aven Friday, IT director, has spent the last year implementing hardware and software updates to keep Perry’s network systems protected and secure to avoid system interruptions. Integration priorities include improving network connections.

“The OSF technology network will enable us to advance local health care delivery,” said Friday.

“Ultimately, our work helps keep patients better connected and closer to home.”

Perry and OSF teams are working together to strengthen technology and infrastructure. They will identify future projects to improve to support patient care services.

Becoming part of OSF will bring additional knowledge, technical and financial resources for our hospital facilities and information technology services.”

Hartman is also preparing to assume the interim CEO position on April 12 as current interim CEO, Patty Luker, will be resuming her retirement. Scott will oversee the integration process through the

merger date of July 1.

“I am honored and grateful for the opportunity to lead Perry through the final months of the integration process with OSF,” said Hartman.

“I will have the opportunity to work more closely with Perry team members and OSF leaders for a successful integration as we become OSF HealthCare Saint Clare Medical Center.”

Next month, Perry will feature its nursing and human resource teams through the integration process.

Blood drive set for April 16 in Granville GRANVILLE — PCHS Interact Club will host a Red Cross blood drive from 1 to 6 p.m. Friday, April 16, at the Granville American Legion, 209 N. McCoy. The event is co-sponsored by Putnam County Rotary.

The Red Cross is experiencing lifethreatening shortages, and encourages

Community Comforts Drive planned In honor of National Library Week, April 4-10, a Community Comforts Drive will be held during the month of April.

It has been a tough go for communities during this pandemic. This year they will be collecting personal items for the Putnam County Food Pantry — shampoo/conditioner, body wash, laundry soap, dish soap, paper towels, toilet paper, toothbrush/toothpaste, tampons/pads, deodorant and personal care items. This is the same as the past Food for Fines drive, for every donation $1 will be taken off your library fines.

Annual taco sale set for May 2 GRANVILLE — Sacred Heart Altar Society of Granville will host its seventh annual taco sale on Sunday, May 2, at

PUTNAM — Area residents will have an opportunity to learn basic principles of safe hunting at a Department of Natural Resources hunter safety course at the Putnam County Conservation/Senachwine Unit, 5769 Lake Road, Putnam. The course will be from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, April 10, and from 9:30 a.m. to finish on Sunday, April 11.

A 1996 state law requires that all hunters born on or after Jan. 1, 1980, successfully complete the hunter education course before they can receive their first hunting license. Participants completing the hunter education course receive a Hunter Education Certification card verifying that they have passed the course of instruction. Participants should provide their Social Security Number at the time of class.

“This will be an excellent opportunity for hunters who need the course in order to qualify for their hunting license,” said Randy Witko. “It can be beneficial for both beginning and advanced hunters, even those born before Jan. 1, 1980.

The minimum 10-hour course includes instruction in wildlife management, firearms safety, hunter ethics, game identification, first aid, survival techniques and regulations.

Women Inspired Network celebrates 5th year with new scholarship As the Women Inspired Network enters its fifth year, all women are invited to attend the 2021 network kickoff on Tuesday, April 13.

WIN is is a charitable giving circle of local philanthropic women and a component fund of the Starved Rock Country Community Foundation.

The gathering begins at 5:30 p.m. at Star Union Spirits in the Westclox Building in Peru, and includes dinner, beverage and dessert, with cocktails available for purchase. The program features WIN 2020 grant recipients; financial update; plans for the current year and a presentation on women’s mental health by Danielle Stoddard, LCPC. Reservations and pre-payment of $17 are required and can be made at www.srccf.org.

Masks and required social distancing will be mandatory.

One of the highlights of the gathering will be the announcement of the new Women Inspired Network Scholarship. WIN created the scholarship to help young women pursue their dreams and goals through leadership and higher education. Young women graduating from high school in 2021, recent high school graduates, homeschooled students with graduation status and young women who have earned a GED with a score of 750 and higher are welcome to apply.

The scholarship will be awarded in accordance with established criteria, answers to two defined essay questions and an additional essay of the applicant’s choosing that tells us what else the scholarship evaluation team should know about her. Applicants will also need two letters of recommendation from educators or employers who can attest to her worthiness as a recipient of the

The Women Inspired Network welcomes all area women to attend the April 13 gathering to learn more about the WIN organization. Membership is not required. Distinguished Women of Starved Rock Country: Eunice Lovejoy The Women Inspired Network has featured Distinguished Women of Starved Rock Country, both past and present, over the course of the last month. Below is the feature for Eunice Lovejoy.

Eunice Lovejoy (1809-1899) was a remarkable woman in her own right, but her place in history is overshadowed by her more public husband, Owen Lovejoy.

Eunice Storrs was born in Trenton, near the city of Utica, N.Y. in 1809. Her parents were Joshua and Mary Perkins Storrs, and her grandfather, Rev. John Storrs of Mansfield, Conn., was a chaplain in the Continental Army. Eunice married Butler Denham when she was 26 years old and came to Princeton in 1838 where she lived the rest of her life.

Butler Denham died in 1841, and Eunice married Owen Lovejoy two years later. The Denham’s land and other assets always remained the property of Eunice — the title never passed to Owen Lovejoy, even though the farm became known as the Lovejoy Homestead after Owen and Eunice were married.

By all accounts, Eunice Lovejoy was a congenial and sensible woman. She successfully handled the business of the farm during her husband’s absences in Washington, D.C., and was also a good parent to her children.

After Owen Lovejoy’s death, Eunice remained at the farm with several of her daughters and her son. She died in January 1899 at the age of 89 and is buried in Oakland Cemetery in Princeton.

Event set for May 15 HENNEPIN — Volunteers are needed for the upcoming Marshall-Putnam County hazardous waste cleanup event.

Organizers are seeking volunteers who can assist with traffic direction and ask survey questions to residents entering the event to be held from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday,

May 15, at the Marshall-Putnam County Fairgrounds.

Volunteers will not be handling any of the materials. The Environmental Protection Agency’s contractor does all of the product handling.

Organizers are seeking six all-day volunteers or two sets of half-day volunteers.

An online public hearing on redistricting is scheduled noon Friday, April 9.

State Rep. Lance Yednock, D-Ottawa, encouraged a public hearing of the House Redistricting Committee in his district.

“Community leaders, organizations and citizens all deserve to have a say in the process of drawing new political districts,” Yednock said.

“By holding this hearing, Illinois Valley residents will have the opportunity to offer input and testimony on the boundaries that both federal and state legislators will be elected to serve in. I encourage anyone from local elected officials to community and advocacy groups to offer testimony in this process.”

The hearing is one of 23 scheduled hearings across the state where legislators will receive input from groups and individuals. Members can share their thoughts on demographic trends they see in their areas, communities of interest, and other information about the region that should inform the process of creating new legislative districts.

The Canal Corridor Association is relaunching the Illinois & Michigan Canal Bike Share program.

The easily-accessible bikes will allow locals and visitors to cover more ground when exploring miles of scenic trails and canal towns within the heritage area.

Bike stations are located near the canal trails at La Salle, Morris, Channahon and Lockport and at the trails at Midewin National Tallgrass Prairie. This will be the first full year of operation for the program.

“The trail is an underappreciated asset,” said Ana Koval, CCA’s executive director. “We hope this program to provide easily accessible bikes will encourage more people to get outside and discover the Illinois & Michigan National Heritage Area since the trail ties much of it together.”

The system is operated from Movatic, an app downloaded on a smart phone and available for Apple, Android and Google phones.

Bike rentals are $5 an hour, available dawn to dusk. Visitors start at the station, download the app, register and add their credit card, then select a bike and ride. Bikes can be returned to any station.

The trail offers so many adventures.”

Three of the stations are located on the I&M Canal State Trail, which runs 62 miles from Joliet to La Salle and is managed by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources. The Lockport station is located on the 8-mile I&M Canal Trail managed by the Forest Preserve District of Will County.

Midewin National Tallgrass Prairie manages its own trails not connected to the canal towpath.

Designated by Congress, the Canal Corridor Association is the only local coordinating entity for the Illinois & Michigan Canal National Heritage Area. Semi driver cited on complaint of following too closely Four motorists and a passenger, including a Spring Valley man and two Princeton women, were taken to local hospitals after a seven-vehicle crash Thursday morning on Interstate 80 in Peru near the Route 251 exit and mile post 75 – one of them with serious injuries and the other four with non-life threatening injuries.

After a preliminary investigation, Illinois State Police said units two, three, four, five, six and seven were all stopped in the right lane of Interstate 80 near the Route 251 exit shortly after 8 a.m. Thursday because of traffic congestion from road construction.

Hao Li, 32, of Vaughan, Ontario, Canada, was traveling east in the right lane in a 2020 Volkswagen tractor-trailer combination, approaching the exit where traffic was stopped.

The front of Li’s vehicle struck the rear driver’s side of a vehicle in the right lane driven by Mark Mautino, 49, of Spring Valley, police said. The force of the impact caused Mautino’s vehicle to travel to the right shoulder and into the ditch, striking the Exit 75 ramp sign.

Li’s vehicle continued east, moving into the left lane, and struck the rear driver’s side of a vehicle driven

by Karen Kloepping, 51, of Princeton. The force of the impact caused Kloepping’s vehicle to come to rest in the right ditch.

Li then struck the rear driver’s side of a vehicle driven by Kimberly Foster, 37, of Dalzell. The force of the impact pushed Foster’s vehicle into the right ditch, causing it to overturn and come to rest on its driver’s side.

Li’s vehicle also struck the rear driver’s side of a vehicle driven by Steven C. Mautino, 56, of Bettendorf, Iowa. Steven Mautino’s vehicle came to rest facing north in the right ditch.

Li then struck the driver’s side of a vehicle driven by Anthany Alfarano, 27, of Anderson, Indiana. Alfarano’s vehicle came to rest in the right lane.

Diners can hear steaks sizzle at Prime Quarter I have been craving a tasty steak from Prime Quarter Steak House in Princeton for the year since the pandemic hit. It’s been a place for many family celebrations over the years, enjoyable meals and get-togethers.

We made it back recently, and my taste buds have thanked me over and over.

The Prime Quarter reopened with some concessions to the pandemic. Reservations now are required to better help the staff provide social distancing in the dining area.

One of the most appealing features of Prime Quarter is the “grill your own” option at one of the two big fire pits.

Because of the guidelines currently in place, that option is off the table for now.

They have a crew of master chefs ready to grill your steak of choice to your liking.

Though we were unable to grill our steaks this time, we sat right next to the grill and could hear the steaks sizzle.

The steaks are now on display the moment you walk in the front door, serving to whet your appetite even more quickly. Hearty eaters may accept the challenge to take on The Beefeater in the display case. That monster portion of beef is way out of my league, though I have witnessed past diners attempt it.

I ordered the top sirloin ($19.95), which normally I would split but got all to myself this time. There was way too much steak for me to eat at one sitting, so it proved to be just as enjoyable the second time around for lunch during the week.

The other four members of my party chose to split two 18-ounce rib-eyes ($32.95 each) between them, one for each pair. There is an additional charge of $10.95 for the “Split a Steak” option.

One of the rib-eyes came with sauteed mushrooms ($4.95) that were more than enough to share among the five of us.

We requested an order of Texas toast, golden off the grill with a spread of butter and garlic salt, before our meal. We had a second round

of it with our food, which made it twice as nice.

Of course, nothing starts the Prime Quarter meal better than a trip to the salad bar. It remains open as normal, with sanitizing stations on hand to provide for safe handling of serving utensils.

I loaded my plate up, trying to save room for my favorite

item, potato salad, even if I had to pile it on top.

Arriving soon were our steaks, filling up our plates, accompanied by a baked potato as a side dish. I take mine medium well.

Needless to say, none of us left hungry. We could only laugh when our server asked if anyone wanted dessert.

Barring any future pandemics, we’ll be back much sooner next time.
