SHAW MEDIA STAFF REPORTS The Wetlands Initiative and Ducks Unlimited have combined resources to help Illinois farmers install smart wetlands to combat the Gulf of Mexico’s hypoxia zone – a “dead zone” of oxygen-depleted water covering more than 5,000 square miles at the Mississippi River Delta. This dead zone threatens to deplete valuable fisheries and disrupt fragile ecosystems. The Illinois River Watershed is one of the largest contributors to the Gulf’s dead zone; the same nitrogen and phosphorus runoff problem has caused recent hypoxic events in midwestern waters as well, including Lake Erie and the Ohio River. Wetlands are one of the most effective natural water quality filters and are a major solution for reducing nutrient runoff and hypoxia. DU, a wetlands conservation, has teamed with the Illinois-based organization TWI to create new Smart Wetlands in strategic locations on agricultural fields. Developed and tested by TWI on several working farms in Illinois, a smart wetland is a small constructed wetland that uses naturally occurring processes to remove excess nutrients from agricultural tile drainage before it leaves cropland. According to TWI, agriculture producers are the greatest ally for improving water quality. Michael Thacker, who farms 4,500 acres of corn and soybeans in Walnut, is an example of how landowners can blend profitable farming with conservation practices. TWI installed a four-acre smart wetland and grassland-pollinator habitat on a parcel of Thacker’s farm. The project has successfully treated drain tile runoff from the surrounding 40 acres. The University of Illinois at Chicago monitored the nutrient load before water entered and exited the constructed marsh. Between 2016 and 2019, the small site removed more than 7,200 pounds of nitrates, or up to 46 pounds

I have a daughter and I want to keep this area nice for her. The wetland requires no work on my part and it makes me feel good that I’m doing things to help the environment.” Through the new partnership, TWI and DU will educate farmers on the benefits of installing smart wetlands and jointly pursue funding opportunities. TWI will share years of smart wetland modeling and technical know-how, while DU’s engineering teams will help design and implement new farm-based projects. “Ducks Unlimited has conserved more than 15 million acres of wetlands across North America over the last 85 years, including more than 55,000 acres here in Illinois,” said Mike Sertle, DU biologist for Illinois. “Most of our projects are on large stretches of land. What makes this partnership so exciting is that DU will help TWI expand the crucial practice of creating precision-sized marshes directly at the source of nutrient runoff.” Smart wetlands align with Illinois’ strategy for nutrient loss reduction and are a time-saving practice that can effec-
tively remove pollutants for more than 30 years at a location. When properly sited, sized and designed, a smart wetland of just a few acres can treat tile runoff from hundreds of acres of drained cropland. TWI’s Senior Environmental Engineer and Smart Wetlands Project Manager, Jill Kostel stated that working with DU has helped create a broader reach and stronger farmer relationships, which creates new opportunities to grow the smart wetlands project. “Working with our ag sector partners these last few years, TWI has learned how to make these wetlands work successfully within the context of productive row crop farms,” Kostel said. According to TWI’s release, smart wetlands can help Illinois meet its nutrient reduction goals of reducing its phosphorus load by 25% and its nitrate-nitrogen load by 15% by 2025. The eventual target is a 45% reduction in the loss of these nutrients to the Mississippi River. The partnership includes DU and TWI field staff spending time on the ground with prospective landowners, explaining the process and subscribing to Farm Bill programs and other grants to help cover construction costs. The first AgView FS intern is Jolene Bobinski, of Magnolia. Albert Gutierrez, of Streator, was the first GRAINCO FS recipient. GRAINCO FS is offering two internships for the 2022-23 academic year.
The program allows select students to enjoy paid internships, summer jobs and two years’ reimbursement of all educational expenses while completing IVCC’s Associate of Applied Science degree in agriculture. Participants are also guaranteed three years’ full-time employment with GRAINCO or AgView. Putnam County Sheriff’s Office recovers street signs in Varna Authorities in Putnam, Marshall counties executed a search warrant for signs believed to be stolen SHAW MEDIA After seeking information on the theft of road signs, the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office said Wednesday it has recovered numerous signs from a residence in Varna. The Putnam County Sheriff’s Office along with the Marshall County Sheriff’s Office executed a search warrant at the property Friday. As a result of the warrant, a multitude of various street and road signs were recovered. The matter has now been turned over to the Putnam and Marshall County state’s attorney’s offices for a review of charges. Putnam County thanked members of the public for tips that led to the recovery of the county’s property. The organization is continuing to take information regarding the signs reported stolen as it believes there

The park district will have Gerrie’s Craft Corner starting at noon Wednesday, April 13. Participants will be able to make fun spring crafts. The district also will have free swim for Hennepin and Hennepin Township residents during its open swims on Monday, April 18.

Illinois Valley Community College’s Phi Theta Kappa chapter recently donated $500 in appliances to Illinois Valley Animal Rescue’s April 9 silent auction.
Phi Theta Kappa co-president Dylan Zupec said the group spent the last two semesters working on the IVAR project. “We volunteered 40 man-hours at Upscale Resale, a thrift store in Spring Valley that donated over $30,000 to the community this year through their nonprofit organization, Helping Hands. “For our service, we received two $250 microgrants we used to purchase the appliances for the IVAR auction,” Zupec said. Volunteers included Zupec, co-president Sophia Rucinski, Kelly Devert, Eliza Atkinson, Joe Krakovsky, Ben Johll, Madeline Phillips, Harvey Vela and IVCC Student Recruitment Specialist and PTK adviser Gracelyn Quesse. Authorities seeks info after reported ruse burglary By JAYCE EUSTICE
jeustice@shawmedia.com The Marshall County Sheriff’s Office issued a release Wednesday detailing a suspected ruse residential burglary that occurred Monday. A ruse burglary utilizes distraction or diversion where a burglary is committed. According to authorities, this crime is often directed toward the elderly. A perpetrator will lure the homeowner out of the house or distract them inside while accomplices enter the home and take valuables. About 6:30 p.m Tuesday, the Marshall County Sheriff’s Office received a call from a citizen in rural Varna reporting that a safe was stolen during the suspected ruse burglary. Investigators discovered at 4 p.m. Monday three unidentified men approached the residence wearing neon reflective vests and surgical masks. The men alleged to be with a power company and said they were in the area to work on power lines. One man reportedly told the homeowner they needed to install a generator at the residence to complete their work, police said.
Shortly after, the other men came inside and asked the homeowner if they could secure a device in his safe to ensure his house would not explode during their work, police said. The homeowner agreed and showed them to his safe, which he was unable to open at the time. The first man then escorted the homeowner outside to locate a suitable location to place the generator while the other two removed the large safe from the inside of the residence and loaded it into their vehicles, police said. All three men departed shortly after. The Marshall County Sheriff’s Office said the incident is under investigation. The organization also encourages citizens to be vigilant in granting people access into their homes and to contact the department with questions regarding a service provider’s credibility. Police also ask the public to speak with elderly relatives and neighbors regarding this type of crime. Anyone with information regarding this incident is encouraged to contact the Marshall County Sheriff’s Office at 309-246-2115.

Five goats died Wednesday following a shed fire on North 1100th Avenue – four adults, one baby. No people were injured as the Granville/Hennepin Fire Protection District responded. A Putnam County Sheriff’s deputy used a fire extinguisher prior to the fire department’s arrival and extinguished most of the fire, the Granville/Hennepin Fire Protection District said in a news release. Arriving crews completed extinguishing the fire and began an overhaul of the small animal shelter. The cause of the fire was determined to be a heat lamp either knocked onto a straw bedding by the animals inside or the cord was damaged by one of the animals. The Hennepin Fire Department thanked the Putnam County Sheriff’s deputy and the Granville and Hennepin firefighters that assisted the family. The Standard and Spring Valley fire departments as well as the Putnam County EMS also responded. – Jayce Eustice
The Prairie Arts Council will be hosting a month-long Art and Pop Culture Exhibit by Austin Burrows at the Prairie Arts Center gallery, 24 E. Park Ave., in Princeton. The exhibit will be open for viewing from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays from April 2 to April 30, at the Prairie Arts Center. Burrows, a Princeton native, began drawing at a young age and began to take it seriously in high school. Burrows has amassed more than 20,000 followers on Instagram and has made a name for himself in the comic arts community. Burrows original artwork, comic book history and memorabilia will be on display at the exhibit. Burrows will also have a number of items available for sale. Dr. Holly Novak named IVCC distinguished alumnus Illinois Valley Community College’s 2022 Distinguished Alumnus is Dr. Holly Novak, a 1974 graduate who has gone on to an illustrious career in cardiology. Early in her career, Novak founded a cardiac catheterization laboratory and an open-heart surgery program at OSF St. Joseph Medical Dr. Holly Novak Center in Bloomington. She accomplished this before she had her first cardiology partner, working independently for five years and “on call” constantly to build the practice. Today she specializes in heart disease prevention and women’s health at HSHS Medical Group Multispecialty Care in Springfield and also sees patients in Clinton, Jacksonville and Rushville. Novak is also one of the most significant donors in IVCC’s 98-year history and is a member of the IVCC
Foundation’s 21st Century Scholars Society. In conjunction with the IVCC commendation, she has been nominated for the Illinois Community College Trustees Association Distinguished Alumnus Award and will be honored at the organization’s annual convention and banquet in Chicago in June. IVCC graduates will get a chance to hear from Novak and learn of her IVCC experiences when she delivers the keynote at the college’s 56th annual commencement at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, May 14. Following IVCC, Novak graduated from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 1976 and Southern Illinois University Medical School in 1979 before completing her residency at the University of Louisville School of Medicine. She helped found a Springfield parents’ group for children with disabilities. Novak attended IVCC when most classes were held in temporary east campus buildings while the permanent campus was being built. “The majority of my IVCC career was spent in those buildings: cold in the winter, hot in the summer. It was there I learned the basics of
biology and chemistry. I did not come to IVCC to find myself or to find direction. I was laser-focused on medical school,” she said. “My most amazing memory of IVCC is that I had no car, worked two-to-three part-time jobs and did not miss class. Not sure how I did that,” she said. “IVCC prepared me for 300-level classes at the U of I, then medical school at SIU. “There was never any question I would start my college career at IVCC. As the youngest of three, financially it was the best option. More importantly, it is a family tradition.” Novak’s parents, Bill and Bernadine, met at IVCC predecessor LPO Junior College and were the school’s homecoming king and queen in 1940. They raised three children and Bill went on to a hall of fame football coaching career at Ottawa High School. “My father put no limitations on his children,” Novak said. Novak’s sister, Dr. Kim Novak, went on from IVCC to become a veterinarian in Ottawa and Streator and brother Kerry attended IVCC on his way to becoming Starved Rock State Park site superintendent. He is now retired.

IVCC auto tech coordinator receives excellence award SHAW MEDIA STAFF REPORT Illinois Valley Community College automotive technology program coordinator Art Koudelka was selected by colleagues this spring as the recipient of the college’s prestigious Stephen Charry Memorial Award for Teaching Excellence. Koudelka has been preparing students for jobs in the automotive industry for more than three decades. Prior to his 33 years at IVCC, he taught part-time at College of DuPage for five years and full-time at Reavis High School for Art Koudelka two. “When I have a question, I know I can rely on Art to provide helpful direction and motivation,” automotive student Elizabeth Grimland said in her nomination of Koudelka for the Charry award. “Everything we are taught revolves around making the right choices.” As part of his selection, Koudelka has been nominated for the Illinois Community College Trustees Association 2022 Outstanding Full-Time Faculty Award. All
nominees will be honored at the ICCTA’s annual convention and banquet in Chicago in June. He also will be honored at IVCC’s employee recognition reception Friday, April 22, at Grand Bear Lodge in Utica. Koudelka led the effort to ensure IVCC’s program is Automotive Service Excellence-certified and he is an ASE Master Certified Automotive Technician. His extensive expertise in the profession allows him to teach numerous courses including basic gas engines, manual and automatic transmissions, fuel systems, heating and air-conditioning, steering, suspension and braking systems. Koudelka is past president of the Illinois College Automotive Instructors Association and has been the executive treasurer the past 25 years. He is also a member of the Automatic Transmission Rebuilders Association. Among his greatest achievements is the high number of automotive technology graduates on the floors of district dealerships, independent repair shops and parts stores. A married father of three, Koudelka was a youth hockey coach and referee for more than 30 years.

The TBM Avenger Reunion continues to grow. This year’s show at Illinois Valley Regional Airport in Peru will be a full two-day event, scheduled Friday and Saturday, May 20 and 21, but festivities are expected to begin Thursday and go into Sunday with the opportunity to ride in several of the aircraft, Peru Alderman Mike Sapienza said. With the expansion of the event, Sapienza said there is need for more volunteers. Meetings are scheduled 9 a.m. Saturday, April 9, and Saturday, April 30, at the Illinois Valley Regional Airport for anyone looking to help out with the activities. All volunteers will receive a free T-shirt, Sapienza said. The TBM Avenger Reunion also includes a salute to veterans. A full airshow is planned on both Friday and Saturday. Friday will include the AeroShell Aerobatic Team’s night airshow, the TBM nighttime flame show, beer gar-
and B-17 bomber. A Yankee Clipper is expected to be on hand for rides and some Vietnam-era aircraft – the Huey and Cobra – may also be available. Despite rains canceling portions of the second day of the 2021 event, it was estimated about 10,000 people cycled through the Peru airport on the opening Friday of the event. Last year was the first year the event expanded to two days, featuring a nighttime air show and festivities. Despite the rain last spring, organizers still were able to perform a flag ceremony where members of the community brought funeral flags of fallen loved ones to be flown in a missing man formation. In the missing man formation, a pull airplane drops out of formation and flies West to honor those veterans that are deceased. The Peru City Council has said it is committed to keeping the TBM Avenger Reunion in the city and makes a sizable contribution to the event, along with city staff assisting in coordinating traffic and parking during the festival.

A chartering ceremony was at a Peru restaurant during the yearly InterCity Meeting hosted by the La Salle-Peru Area Zonta Club. Zontians from La Salle-Peru Area, Ottawa and Streator clubs were in attendance for the dinner meeting and chartering ceremony. IVCC instructor Kimberly Radek Hall, president of the La Salle area club, gave the welcome and conducted the meeting. Zonta District 6 Area Director Rhonda Thomas, of Kankakee, gave a keynote address featuring Zonta’s service and advocacy projects done at local, district and global levels. The NewsTribune Illinois Valley Sports Hall of Fame will be inducting its third class on a night in which food, drinks, honors and memories are all on the menu. The 2022 NewsTribune Illinois Valley Sports Hall of Fame Inductee Banquet will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday, June 2, at the Auditorium Ballroom, 109 Wright St. in La Salle. Doors will open at 5 p.m., dinner will be served at 6 p.m. and the inductions and storytelling will commence immediately after. Tickets are $37 and are available at qr.shawlocal.com/IVHOF22. This year’s class will be revealed in Shaw Media publications such as the NewsTribune, The Times, the Putnam County Record and the Bureau County Republican as well as social media throughout the coming weeks. Panthers win consolation title at Rantoul Tournament SHAW MEDIA STAFF REPORT Nicholas Currie and Drake Smith combined to toss a one-hitter Saturday to lead the Putnam County Panthers to a 5-0 victory over Grant Park in the consolation championship of the Rantoul Tournament on Saturday, April 2. Currie threw three innings, striking out seven batters and walking one, while Smith pitched four innings, allowing one hit while striking out seven and walking none. Andrew Pyszka went 3 for 3 and scored two runs, Josh Jessen was 1 for 3 with two RBIs and Jackson McDonald tripled and scored a run. The Panthers beat Rantoul 13-1 on Friday, April 1. Austin Mattingly, Currie and McDonald each drove in three runs. McDonald was 2 for 4 with a triple
and also scored two runs, while Currie went 2 for 4 and doubled. Troy Petty earned the win for PC (5-3), striking out nine batters in 42/3 perfect innings Also on Friday, the Panthers lost to Wilmington 2-1.

Carlson was the starting pitcher in the Jaguars’ 8-3 Game 1 win, pitching six innings while scattering eight hits with three earned runs, a walk and six strikeouts. Olson went the distance in the Jaguars’ 6-1 win in the nightcap, striking out 10 over seven innings while allowing seven hits and two walks. Olson will attend Division I Ohio University on scholarship next year.
