Local artist creates memorial painting for late beloved star Betty White: America’s Golden Girl John Kettman creates a one-of-a-kind painting to commemorate the late actress By JAYCE EUSTICE
jeustice@shawmedia.com When local artist John Kettman felt inspired to create a unique painting to honor the late Betty White, he never thought it would become something that thousands around the country would be able to see and enjoy. Kettman heard of the late actress’ passing and began working on a one-of-a-kind piece of artwork that draws on White’s history and how much she was beloved by her fans. “I heard that she had passed on the 31st and I thought maybe I could try Betty White,” Kettman said. “So I started painting it. I drew a sketch of her and I was going to put pictures of her around it, kind of like a time capsule. Then I just started sketching and I thought against that.” Kettman titled his work of art “Betty White: America’s Golden Girl.” Kettman bounced around as he tried to decide how he wanted to depict White. The delicate facial paint looks almost like a pencil sketch, but was actually created using acrylic paint. Kettman also struggled to decide if the painting should be done in full color, but elected to only include colors in her clothing and in the background. “I thought maybe I won’t add any color to it,” Kettman said. “Betty White is Betty White and I wanted to convey that in the painting. I wanted this particular one to be white because of her name.” Kettman also included subtle swirls of gold paint in her hair that can only be seen when you look at the painting from an angle. White is surrounded by a gold background that Kettman described as a tribute to her golden girl status. He also decided to include the writing of White’s former husband
Allen Ludden on her shirt and over her heart. Kettman did extensive research on White, as he does with many of the subjects he portrays. He tried to incorporate parts of White’s personality, as well as used many different images that he mixed together to create the expression on her face. “The personality of the individual has to come out of there,” Kettman said. “You have to convey that.”

Jayce Eustice named Putnam County Record news editor Eustice worked as reporter at the NewsTribune SHAW LOCAL NEWS NETWORK Jayce Eustice has been named to the position of news editor at the Bureau County Republican and Putnam County Record. Eustice previously served as a news reporter for the NewsTribune in La Salle where he was responsible for reporting on the La Salle and Peru city beats. Eustice grew up in Henry where he graduated from Henry-Senachwine High School in 2015 before continuing his education at Northern Illinois University. He graduated in 2019 with a bachelors degree in journalism. While attending NIU, Eustice wrote for the Northern Star student newspaper covering the school’s track and field team as well as its Division 1 football program. He also served as the sports editor. Eustice worked for the NewsTribune for a year and half where he was able to report on many important and breaking news items during his time.
From chasing down Wally the wallaroo to covering La Salle County’s first COVID-19 vaccine recipient as well as local elections, Eustice has been involved in a wide range of news stories in that time period. Eustice also has broadcasted baseball games for the Illinois Valley Pistol Shrimp in Peru during the team inaugural season. As a resident of La Salle, Eustice looks forward to tackling his newest task as news editor. A few openings remain for the Illinois Valley Community College Dental Assisting program’s free/reduced-cost dental clinics for IVCC students, staff and the community. Clinics are 8 a.m. to noon Fridays, Jan. 28 through May 6 (excluding Feb. 25, March 4 and March 11) in the Dental Lab, B214.
Screening days for new patients only are Jan. 28 and Feb. 4 and include X-rays, a comprehensive exam, treatment plans and oral hygiene instruction. Recommended treatment will be scheduled. Funds were donated to the Starved Rock Historical and Education Foundation By JAYCE EUSTICE
jeustice@shawmedia.com After creating a seasonal-accurate Starved Rock and Matthiessen State Park calendar, local entrepreneur and photographer Matthew Klein was able to present a donation of $3,375 to the Starved Rock Historical and Educational Foundation. The Starved Rock Historical and Education Foundation is a volunteer-run nonprofit that was founded in 1992. Klein set out with a goal of creating a calendar that took the work of 12 photographers to create a truly one-ofa-kind piece of work. The calendar was put up for sale at locations around the Illinois Valley, as Klein intended to donate the proceeds to an organization whose goal is to support the parks that he has grown up to love. “We’re very thankful for the large

These photographers included Andrew Kenning, Tom Tarner, Steve Stout, Joe Howard, Kathy Casstevens, Kyle Petersen, Connor Broderick, Nicholas Albert, Tea Lamboley, Paula Gutilla, Jacob Etzenbach and Klein himself. Klein wanted to create a piece of artwork that exemplifies what these parks mean to visitors and those who grew up in the area. “I believe these parks offer some of the most pristine, unique and beautiful areas in the Midwest,” Klein said. “The idea of creating a calendar to benefit the places we love exploring came naturally.” Klein mentioned that the donation was made possible by the generosity of those who purchased a calendar, as well as the local businesses that housed the calendars such as the Starved Rock Visitor Center Foundation Store, Bruce & Ollies in Utica and Stage 212 in La Salle. “It was great to see local businesses and organizations supporting the fundraiser and I can’t thank them enough,” Klein said.

It’s official: Wahlburgers opens in Peru Hy-Vee with celebration Restaurant will be open from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily By JAYCE EUSTICE
jeustice@shawmedia.com There’s excitement in Peru about the new Wahlburgers restaurant that opened Tuesday in Hy-Vee. Wahlburgers opened to the public Tuesday following its grand-opening celebration. The chain restaurant owned by Mark, Donnie and Paul Wahlberg within the Hy-Vee grocery store now will be open from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily. Peru Hy-Vee store manager Andrew Cochran said the community response both from Monday’s exclusive trial run to Tuesday’s opening has been nothing but positive. “We sent out 300 invites for an event (Monday) where we did a test run for lunch and dinner,” Cochran said. “I was here for both of them. I’ll tell you that all the comments were good and hopefully people come on out and eat.” The restaurant will function in conjunction with the many food court items that Hy-Vee customers are accustomed to. Those looking to grab a Wahlburger will order from the counter outside of the seating area and receive a number before finding their seat. Their order then will be brought to them once it is prepared.

The restaurant will be open from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily. “The format won’t affect any of our other food options,” Cochran said. “You can still grab Chinese and pay for it and eat it here. You can still have a drink at the bar or anything else you’d like.” Cochran said Hy-Vee was proud to have the additional option of Wahlburgers while still being able to provide the food options it previously had. “This creates one more option and it doesn’t eliminate any options,” Cochran said. “We are still going to serve breakfast from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. every day. You can come in and order breakfast that way. It’s
kind of like the food hall concept where you can come in and enjoy whatever you want.” Tuesday’s grand opening marked the first time Illinois Valley residents could get a taste of the new menu from the burger joint opened by the Wahlberg brothers. Mark has become a world-renowned actor starring in many feature films in his career while Donnie was a founding member of the popular boy band New Kids on the Block and also went on to become a well-known actor and producer. Paul became a chef who teamed up with his brothers to open the first Wahlburgers in 2011. The company then entered into a partnership with Hy-Vee in 2018 to open more than 20 locations within the grocery store chain. Wahlburgers has since grown to include more than 50 locations both independent and in partnership with Hy-Vee. Cochran, who worked at the Bloomington Hy-Vee location during its opening of the Wahlburgers restaurant, said in his experiences the transitions have been smooth and most importantly the community seems to enjoy the food.

Class will take place from 1 to 3:30 p.m. every Saturday OGLESBY – The Illinois Valley Community College’s Continuing Education Office will begin to offer a 12-week Private Pilot Ground Training Course from 1 to 3:30 p.m. Saturdays beginning Feb. 5. There will be no class March 12. The main campus class will prepare students for the Private Pilot Knowledge Exam and will provide knowledge of flight con-
trols and instruments, airport and airspace considerations, aircraft weight and balance aircraft performance tables, basic weather meteorology, federal aviation regulations, flight psychology and emergency preparedness. Students will be able to tour the Illinois Valley Regional Airport and experience a flight simulator. Flying or airtime is not included in the course. Upon completion of the course, students will be eligible to take the F.A.A Private Pilot
Knowledge Exam. There is an additional fee for the test. Textbooks for the course include Federal Aviation Regulations Aeronautical Information Manual, Private Pilot 2022 Test Prep and the Pilot’s Handbook of Aeronautical Knowledge. Mrs. Tidaback was preceded in death by her husband Robert Tidaback on June 28, 1997, and two sisters Ella Mae Moss and Ilene Verda. cellerbrock@shawmedia.com OTTAWA – Marquette Academy’s Lilly Craig would be the first one to say that she’s definitely not a one-person team, but one would have difficulty convincing the Henry-Senachwine/Lowpoint-Washburn girls basketball squad of that fact after what they experienced on Thursday night in Bader Gym. Craig, a sophomore, scored a huge 25 points, including the go-ahead 3-pointer with just 29.9 seconds remaining, to give the No. 2 seeded Crusaders a wild 33-31 victory over the No. 1 seeded Mallards in the championship game of the Tri-County Conference Tournament. It was Craig who canned a 15-footer to tie the game at 28 with 6:04 left in the fourth quarter to snap an eight-minute stretch in which MA scored only two points, going from a four-point lead to a twopoint deficit in that span. Another of her jumpers knotted it again at 30 and, after the Mallards’ Hope Self sank a free throw with 3:17 left to give her team the slimmest of leads, Craig, out of a timeout, moved from the left low post where she’d spent most of the half out to the right wing and found herself wide open for the game-winner. “I was in a different spot for me and the pressure was higher because that’s not really one of my best shooting places,” said Craig, who with teammate Josie Eager was an all-tourney pick after making 10-of-17 shots, 4-of-11 of those from the arc, and added five rebounds on the night. “I knew if I didn’t make it, it would be hard to rebound it. No backboard … but it felt like a good shot as soon as I let it go.” The shot gave Marquette (15-8) its first girls tourney title since 2012 and denied the Henry-Sen-
achwine/Lowpoint-Washburn girls (14-8), who were playing in their first T-C tourney title game in 31 years and got 13 points from all-tourney choice Nakeita Kessling. Avery Durdan and McCallum each had four points, the only MA points not scored by Craig. “Sometimes you end up surprised that you’re so open and that’s what happened to Lilly,” Marquette coach Eric Price said. “We hadn’t run that play since the first quarter, then went away from it because we were out of whack, but we went back to it and it worked out. Lilly’s a great 3-point shooter, over 40% for the year, and she made another big one tonight. “It’s always nice to win a championship and it’s even nicer when it’s on your home court. I’m happy for the girls.” Craig had 15 of her points in the first half as MA led by two after one period and one at the break, thanks to plenty of second-chance points by Kessling, Kaitlyn Anderson (10 points, 10 rebounds on the night) and Laney Lester (seven points, six rebounds). But the only Cru bucket during that second-half drought was a 10-footer by Eva McCallum that kept the hosts up 26-24 through three. A free throw and a three-point play by Kessling and a Lester deuce gave H-S/L-P the lead twice before Craig tied it twice. Self drained the high-pressure go-ahead toss and, after a few turnovers by each club, the ball ended up in Craig’s hands for the final points. The Mallards’ last chance, a possession with 16.9 left after MA’s 22nd turnover, yielded two missed shots. “We had our chances, but they just made that one more shot than we did, just like we did when we played at our place last month,” said H-S/L-P coach Erik Greenwood, referencing the Mallards’ 39-36 win

Starved Rock Country Community Foundation offers several scholarships Scholarships tailored to a variety of students SHAW LOCAL NEWS NETWORK Starved Rock Country Community Foundation announced the 2022 scholarship program to help students pursue their dreams and goals of higher education. Unlike many other scholarship offerings, the foundation also will offer these scholarships to students that are home-schooled. The Carol and Dick Janko Scholarship for Promising Entrepreneurs will award a total of $7,500 to young entrepreneurs in Starved Rock Country. The scholarship reflects a lifelong commitment to youth, education, economic development and philanthropy. Applicants must be enrolled in an accredited university or college for the 2022 school year and be able to demonstrate recent studies, or work-related activities focused on entrepreneurship, and the intent to become an entrepreneur. The SRCCF included the Internet of Things (IoT) Scholarship for Science,

It was older women joking around and it was quite the show. Then I saw on TV that they were having a celebration in her hometown of Oak Park. I thought to myself ‘Can I get this painting done in time to take it up there?’” Kettman then made the trip to a celebration of White’s life with the newly completed painting in hand. He was joined by hundreds of White’s fans who spent time remembering and honoring her memory. Kettman was approached by the Chicago Sun Times and ABC7 Chicago who both featured him and his painting in news segments and articles. Photos of the painting were shared throughout the country as people enjoyed seeing White memorialized. “There were probably 20 people that were posing with it in front of the theater and wanted their picture with it,”

The scholarships will be subsidized through proceeds realized from the Adam and Ida Deck Scholarship Fund.
