Putnam County was scheduled to play in the Lady Bruins Christmas Classic at St. Bede, but it, like all other holiday tournaments and regular-season play, have been shut down due to the pandemic. The Lady Panthers won the St. Bede tournament in 1995, then known as the Mid-I 80 Tournament, defeating Princeville 60-55. PC finished second in 1998, falling to Princeton, 58-50. LaSalle veterans home changes donations policy to distribute items to residents quicker Drive will continue through Dec. 31

BY DEREK BARICHELLO dbarichello@shawmedia.com The Illinois Veterans Home in LaSalle changed its policy to distribute donated items.

Last week, the superintendent at the LaSalle County Veterans Assistance Commission wrote a letter saying that donations from a recent drive for residents were not being made “readily available,” noting the facility’s practices often took a week before items were distributed.

Steven Kreitzer, superintendent of the LaSalle County Veterans Assistance Commission, was informed recently by state officials that a new process has been set up to distribute donations through the registered nurses on each wing.

“Multiple keys have been made to the donation storage area and each wing has a key,” said Bridget Dooley, public information officer

at the Illinois Department of Veterans Affairs. “If a veteran needs an item, staff can take the key and retrieve the item for them and log what was retrieved and for whom it was retrieved 24 hours a day.”

Prior to this change, items were locked in a secured area, out of concern that staff were taking some of these supplies. This process left the facility’s head of activities in charge of distributing supplies when requested for residents, a process that could take days or a week, Kreitzer said.

Kreitzer thanked everyone who helped spread the word to enact the change. Sen. Sue Rezin, R-Morris, was one of them; she wrote a letter to the Illinois Department of Veterans Affairs asking for a resolution.

Kreitzer received clarity on whether veterans are being charged for donated items. He also raised this concern in his letter. He was told there is a process so that there is no confusion when a donated item is given to a veteran or a purchased item is charged.

“We look forward to sharing this process to clear up any and all confusion,” Kreitzer said.

The donation drive, which asked folks to drop off specific items at the LaSalle County courthouses or Peru HyVee, supplied the facility with 61 denture creams, 3,598 denture cleaning tablets, 31 electric razors, 176 toothpastes, 480 toothbrushes, 247 body washes and shampoos, 48 conditioners, 159 bottles of lotion and 78 pairs of socks.

Items may be dropped off at the LaSalle courthouses at 119 W. Madison St. or 707 E. Etna Road in Ottawa, or HyVee on Midtown Road in Peru. Call the La Salle County Veterans Assistance for special arrangements at 815-433-1761.

Needed items are shampoo/conditioner, body wash, shaving cream, lotion, denture glue/denture cleaner, toothpaste/toothbrushes and electric razors. All items must be in new/unopened condition.

Jodi Mahoney named president and CEO Jodi Mahoney has been named president and CEO effective Jan. 1 The North Central Behavioral Health Systems board has announced changes in its management team, effective Jan. 1.

Don Miskowiec, president and CEO, will retire Jan. 1 after a 25-year tenure in the position.

Diane Farrell, chief clinical and compliance officer, will retire after 35 years of providing leadership to clinical operations and processes at the organization.

Jodi Mahoney, current executive vice president and chief operating officer, has been named president and CEO, effective Jan. 1. She has been with the organization since Jodi Mahoney 1997 and has held a variety of management roles overseeing education and prevention, treatment and other administrative areas and currently serves on the Illinois Association for Behavior-

al Health board, is a member of the Governor’s Connect Illinois Task Force Telehealth Committee and is a past board member for the Community Behavioral Healthcare Association of Illinois.

Mahoney has provided consulting services for multiple behavioral health providers on the implementation of telehealth within their service lines and has provided national presentations on electronic health record implementation and telehealth for the National Council for Community Behavioral Health Association and Open Minds Consulting, both located in Washington.

Mahoney holds a master’s in business administration from the Graduate School of Management at Lewis University, Romeoville. She currently resides in Oglesby with her husband, Jim; two children, Tessa and Travis; two dogs, Rosie and Gabby; and her cat, Izzy.

Larry Block, current vice president and chief financial officer, has been named executive vice president and will remain CFO. Block has been CFO since 1996 and oversees financial operations and human resources. He has more than

30 years financial management and consulting experience in behavioral health. Block holds a bachelor’s in accounting from Illinois State University and is a certified public accountant.

Current assistant vice president and director of integrated care, Noelle Sliker, will become vice president and chief operating officer.

Sliker has been with the agency since 2007 in a variety of clinical and management roles. She has played a pivotal role in developing the Primary and Behavioral Health Integrated Care Treatment Model and is responsible for the development and oversight of the care coordination department within the agency.

In addition, Sliker is credited with researching, recommending and facilitating the utilization of the evidenced-based functional assessment tool Daily Living Activities 20, which is pivotal in prescribing behavioral health treatment that allows individuals to live their fullest lives possible. Sliker holds a master’s in social work from Illinois State University, Bloomington, and is a licensed clinical social worker.

Hennepin law office changes hands

HENNEPIN — The year 2021 ushers in a new era for the Boyle & Goldsmith law office building in Hennepin, as attorney Roger Bolin turns over the keys and ownership to fellow attorney Scott Shore. Also, longtime legal secretary Connie Halbleib, who in August celebrated her 40th year as a legal secretary in the office, will retire.

The building still bears the names of original law partners Walter Durley Boyle and Linn C. Goldsmith, who opened its doors in 1976.

Shore joined the firm as an associate in 1977 and became a partner in Boyle, Goldsmith & Shore in 1983.

Bolin had joined the firm as an associate in 1979 and “followed suit” as a partner in 1985, in Boyle, Goldsmith, Shore & Bolin. Scott Shore left the office in 1990 when elected circuit judge and returned upon retirement from the bench 24 years later, in

2014, sharing office space with Bolin.

Original partners Boyle and Goldsmith had both passed, in 2008 and 2014 respectively.

Bolin plans to work from home, completing a number of cases still in progress, and continuing as Putnam County public defender, a post he has held since 1990 when Judge Shore gave up the office to serve on the bench.

Halbleib says she will enjoy retirement, giving her more time to spend with her family, friends, church and hobbies.

Shore says, at age 68, he plans to continue practicing law as long as he is able. He also serves as a mediator for civil cases, helping lawyers and their clients resolve cases without the delay, expense and uncertainty of a trial. Shore says he is proud to continue the founding partners’ legacy of legal service in Hennepin.

IVCC to host virtual student registration in January Illinois Valley Community College will host Virtual Express Registration events from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Jan. 5 to 6 and Jan. 12 to 13. Students can apply, register, and speak with a counselor and a financial aid representative, IVCC Director of Admissions and Transfer Services Quintin Overocker said.

“All students need do is call 815-2240324. We will direct them to everything they need,” Overocker said.

Students who are unable to pay for spring semester classes, which begin Jan. 14, are encouraged to call the college’s financial aid department at 815224-0438.

Gateway calendars have arrived PRINCETON — Gateway Services held a calendar fundraiser and the calendars have arrived.

The pages feature artwork submitted by individuals in the day programs. Calendars measure 11-by-17 inches when opened and are available for $10 each at the main office (406 S. Gosse Blvd., Princeton). Office hours are 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. Those visiting the office should wear a face mask.

McDonnell makes case for cybersecurity OGLESBY — Illinois Valley Community College cybersecurity program coordinator Nancy McDonnell recently presented “Cybersecurity Today” live via Zoom to about 30 small business owners and staff.

McDonnell’s presentation, sponsored in partnership with district chambers of commerce, focused on what businesses can do to thwart cyberattack.

“The basic premise is, if it connects to the internet, it can be hacked,” McDonnell warned, adding, “It can be breached if you don’t take precautions.”

Cyberattacks cost businesses an average of $200,000 to $320,000 and 43% target small business, she said.

However, 60% of small businesses have no plan and 60% fold within six months of an attack.

“If cyberattack can put you out of business, it should be a high priority,” she said.

A pandemic that has forced many employees to work remotely, ignited a firestorm of cybercrime: • Ransomware attacks rose 148% in March; • Cloud-based attacks spiked 630% between January and April; and • Phishing attempts surged 660% since March.

McDonnell said every IT professional needs cybersecurity proficiencies to protect and defend apps, data, devices, infrastructure and people.

Security training is no longer optional, it is essential.

Putnam County weekly COVID report: 15 new cases

From Dec. 20-27, Bureau, Putnam, Marshall County Health Departments reported 15 new COVID-19 cases in Putnam County.

During this time, there were no deaths reported. There have been zero COVID-19 related deaths recorded in Putnam County since the start of the pandemic. There have been 65 deaths recorded in Bureau County and eight deaths in Marshall County.

Putnam County cities and villages that have reported more than six cases since the start of the pandemic: Hennepin: 56 cases; 891 tested; Granville: 139 cases; 1,074 tested; McNabb: 23 cases; 291 tested; Magnolia: 22 cases; 323 tested; Putnam: 31 cases; 379 tested; Mark: 20 cases; 247 tested; and Standard: 22 cases; 119 tested.

There have been a total of 318 cases of COVID-19 in Putnam County as of Dec. 28 since the start of the pandemic. That’s up 11 cases from last week.

The public is reminded to stay at home whenever possible and, if you must go out, make sure that you: • Distance. Distance. Distance.

• Wear a facemask or other face cover in public, especially when distancing is not possible • Avoid crowds and large gatherings, especially if you see that people are not following guidance for distancing and masks.

• Avoid any locations where employees or staff are not following guidelines and/or not encouraging customers and patrons to do the same.

Oriental Gardens a Chinese delight in Princeton Nestled on South Main Street in Princeton sits a small Chinese restaurant that gets big, positive reviews throughout the year.

Oriental Gardens is among people’s top favorite restaurants in town and is always a “must visit” place to go when natives return to the area.

With my family in the mood for Chinese food, we pulled up a menu online.

Among the appetizer choices of egg rolls, crab meat rangoons, pot stickers or fried wontons, we couldn’t decide on just one starter, so we opted for the item at the bottom of the list, the pu pu platter, which comes with a little bit of everything.

The menu says the platter serves two, but I truly believe this would satisfy up to four people. It features chicken and beef teriyaki on a stick, a handful of fried chicken pieces, two egg rolls and two crab meat rangoons.

The platter went over well. The kids loved the idea of eating meat off a stick and split the egg rolls and crab meat rangoons. We each dipped the fried chicken pieces in duck sauce that came with the meal, and polished off the crowd-pleaser.

Next on our order was soup. Oriental Gardens offers six options – egg drop, vegetable, wonton, hot and sour, and chicken or shrimp sizzling rice. We’re big fans of wonton soup, so it was a quick decision to opt for the pint portion.

We appreciated the secure plastic container that kept it hot. This soup is a must-try, its broth very mild, similar to a chicken noodle soup base. The wontons are like a dumpling filled with bites of beef. The soup is garnished with green onion slices that give a nice crunchy seasoning to the broth.

As for the entrees, we decided to go with two classics – the sweet and sour chicken, served with white

The chicken’s sauce was sweet and tangy with pineapple pieces, onions and green pepper bites.

For dessert, we tried the fried doughnuts actually

listed under appetizers. The 10 warm rolls sprinkled with sugar blew away any and all expectations we might have had. The warm dough melted in our mouths and the only thing we regretted was that we barely had enough room to have more than two each.

PRINCETON — Perry Memorial Hospital and Community Partners Against Substance Abuse are presenting a community opportunity to be at the forefront of battling suicide.

Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST), a two-day, workshop designed for members of all caregiving groups, will be held from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Feb. 18 and 19 in the Perry Memorial Hospital White Oak Classroom. Family, friends and other community members may be the first to talk with a person at risk but have little or no training. ASIST teaches participants to recognize when someone may have thoughts of suicide and work with them to create a plan that will support their immediate safety. ASIST can also provide those in formal helping roles with professional development to ensure that they are prepared to provide suicide first aid help as part of the care they provide.

ASIST is widely used by health

care providers; however, participants do not need any formal training to attend a workshop. Anyone 16 or older can learn and use the ASIST model. Since its development in 1983, ASIST has received regular updates to reflect improvements in knowledge and practice, and more than 2 million people have participated in the workshop.

The learning process is based on adult learning principles and highly participatory. Graduated skills development occurs through mini lectures, facilitated discussions, group simulations, and role plays.

Participants will receive a formal certification that acknowledges their successful completion of the course and understanding of the core principles.

Gianna Grivetti and Ryan Brady selected Sophomores Gianna Grivetti and Ryan Brady have been selected by St. Bede Academy faculty and staff as recipients of the 2020-21 HOBY Award.

Grivetti and Brady will attend the state leadership seminar this summer with other HOBY Award winners from around the state. HOBY stands for Hugh O’Brian Youth Association. The HOBY seminar is a national program exclusively for high school sophomores. The mission of HOBY is to seek, recognize and develop leadership potential commencing with high school sophomores. The expected outcomes of the seminar are for students attending to learn to think critically; to enhance their leadership skills; to learn more about democracy, free enterprise and volunteerism; and to accept the risks of leadership.

Throughout a three-day seminar, Grivetti and Brady will interact with key leaders in media, politics and business in Illinois. They will

have the chance to ask these individuals questions and hear their plans for the future. They will also have the chance to speak with various representatives from different colleges.

Gianna is the daughter of James and Stephanie Grivetti of Ladd.

She attended Peru Catholic Grade School and is a sophomore at St. Bede Academy. Gianna is on the golf and bowling teams and was selected for the All Conference Golf Team in 2019 and 2020. She received the Foreign Language award, English award, Academic award and Citizenship award in 2019. Gianna has also been on the honor roll every semester.

Ryan is the son of Tom and Kerri Brady, of La Salle. He attended Dimmick Grade School and is a sophomore at St. Bede Academy.

He has been involved in Spanish Club, Interact Club, Lectio and Student Government. Ryan plays basketball, football and baseball. He has been on the honor roll every semester.

Lenkaitis signs with D-II Truman State

Lenkaitis to play soccer in college despite PC not offering sport In a lot of ways, Taylor Lenkaitis has had to pave her own way in terms of athletic success.

The senior at Putnam County High School — who hails from the tiny town of McNabb (population 342) — has never enjoyed the advantage of competing for her school in the sport she’s grown to love.

That’s because Putnam County does not have a soccer program, and soccer is the sport in which Lenkaitis has proven to be incredibly adept.

Over the years, Lenkaitis has honed her skills playing club soccer away from her local friends and PC classmates.

So much so that all her hard work has paid off in a big way.

Recently, Lenkaitis signed a National Letter of Intent to play soccer for NCAA Division II Truman State University after she graduates from PCHS in the spring.

“We used to go to dance classes in Princeton, so we wanted something else to pass the time while we were there,” Lenkaitis said. “My mom saw soccer was available at Zearing Park, so she signed me up, and I

ended up really liking the sport, got better at it, and ended up quitting dance in order to compete in soccer full time.

“Once I got to high school, I knew the sport wasn’t offered there, so I just kept on trying to get better every year with my club teams, and here I am now with a chance to play the sport I love in college. I’m so excited to be moving on to the next level at Truman State.”

The Bulldogs, out of Kirksville, Mo., are members of the 15-team Great Lakes Valley Conference, and are coached by 28-year veteran bench boss Mike Cannon (350-12860 career record), who currently ranks fifth in terms of wins for active coaches on the NCAA D-II soccer level.

Cannon is thrilled to have Lenkaitis as part of his most recent recruiting class.

“Originally, Taylor sought us out and we kept in touch, and I eventually saw her play with her club team at a showcase tournament in St. Louis,” Cannon said. “Then I got to see her again several weeks ago at another showcase event, and I knew we wanted her in our program. She’s a very adaptable player who can compete at a lot of positions, both offensively and defensively. I couldn’t be happier to have her as part of our team

That club team that helped propel Lenkaitis to her achievement is the Illinois Fire Juniors based out of Bloomington, and is coached by the program’s high school girls director Brandon Menke.

“Taylor is extremely versatile and possesses the unique quality of both attacking and defending,” Menke said. “She’s tenacious and isn’t afraid, even though she’s maybe only 5-foot-2 or so. She’s absolutely fearless, and I think her game translates very well to the

Division II level of soccer, where I believe she’ll succeed in a big way.”

Lenkaitis is unsure what she’ll study, but she knows Truman State is a great fit for her all the way around, especially on the soccer pitch.

“Hopefully, I can compete and perform well in college and show that my high school might want to develop a soccer program in the future that can potentially benefit future players like me that love the sport so much,” Lenkaitis said.

New PC-Hall coach wrestled at Ottawa

When wrestling season rolls around this summer, Gavin Kurtz will get his first shot at being a head coach.

After seven years as an assistant at St. Bede and Seneca, Kurtz is taking over the Putnam County-Hall program.

As he steps into his first lead role, he’ll use lessons he learned from Ottawa coach Peter Marx.

“I try to be the coach that I needed as an athlete,” said Kurtz, a 2007 Ottawa graduate. “Coach Marx at Ottawa is a huge reason for me being the coach I am today. We still talk a few times per week, and he continues to help me learn and grow.

“Marx gives me advice on how to deal with different personalities,

ways to promote the sport, and we bounce practice ideas off each other.”

Kurtz was a three-sport athlete at OTHS, playing football and wrestling for four years, and participating in track and field for three years.

As a wrestler, Kurtz helped the Pirates to conference championships as a junior and senior, to runner-up regional finishes those years, and a new school record for dual wins in a season.

Individually, he was a two-time conference champion and won titles at the Yorkville, Conant and Princeton invitationals. He won the 189-pound bracket at the Class AA Minooka Regional as a junior before repeating in the weight class as a senior at the Pontiac Regional.

Kurtz qualified for state as a junior in 2006 by placing third at

the Normal Community Sectional.

He finished the season 34-10 and was named the team MVP. Kurtz also was a two-time Ottawa Times All-Area selection.

Following graduation, Kurtz went to Jamestown College (now University of Jamestown) to play football and wrestle.

He later transferred to Iowa Lakes Community College to wrestle, where he helped the Lakers to a top-five finish at nationals in their first year as a program.

While Kurtz said his current athletes “don’t even know what I look like yet” and thus don’t know anything about his own career, he does use examples from his time on the mat with his wrestlers.

“I do use examples from my playing days,” Kurtz said. “The biggest one would be about never being too good to work on the little details.”

kchlum@shawmedia.com Five years after starting the girls basketball program at St. Bede, Don Carlson was looking to find more games for his Lady Bruins.

“I was the coach and athletic director,” Carlson said. “At the time, you could have 18 games and two tournaments. The year before, we had gotten into the U-High tournament over Thanksgiving, but there were hardly any holiday tournaments around for girls (near Christmas). We weren’t in a conference, so we didn’t have a conference tournament. I wanted to get the girls in another tournament, so I got on the phone with Jim Campbell at Putnam County, Mary Stephenitch at Mendota and John Smith at Princeton and said, ‘I think we can run one at St. Bede.’”

So the Mid I-80 tournament was born.

It was eventually renamed the Lady Bruins Christmas Classic in 1997 and is still held each December at St. Bede.

“For me, it’s the fact that I get to sit in the gym and watch basketball all day long,” current St. Bede coach Tom McGunnigal said about why he likes the Lady Bruins Christmas Classic. “I could do that almost every single day.

I like the fact we get 4-5 games in a relatively short amount of time. Sometimes it’s a bit of a strain physically on the team, but it’s always nice to have something going on around the holidays. In the past, some girls have had family in town and it gives them the opportunity to see them play.

“It’s always been competitive. I enjoy seeing the different players and it’s nice seeing different teams all come together to play.”

In the first version of the tournament in 1986, each team played two games. Carlson said initial matchups were drawn out of a hat.

The next year, LaSalle-Peru and Hall joined the field and the tournament was bracketed with two teams receiving byes.

In 1990, the tournament expanded to eight teams and remained a bracketed tournament through Carlson’s tenure.

The tournament became an eightteam tournament with pool play then a 10-team tournament with pool play and currently is an eight-team tournament with pool play followed by crossover games on the final day.

“We’ve always enjoyed going to St. Bede for their Christmas tournament,” Fieldcrest coach Mitch Neally said. “We’ve had some opportunities to go to other tournaments and have turned them down because we appreciate the tournament and its history.

It’s nice to be able to play some teams from that area that we normally don’t play during the season. One of my favorite parts of the tournament is the Saturday of it. I enjoy starting to scout/watch games beginning at 9 a.m. and not leaving till 9 p.m.

It’s good to see your team’s mental toughness on a day like that playing two games in one day. Our players and myself just enjoy being in the gym watching or playing basketball around the holidays.”

Former Hall coach Pat Cinotte said he felt the tournament was extremely competitive during his time taking the Lady Red Devils there starting in 2005.

“I thought it was one of the strongest ones in the state at the time because us, St. Bede, IVC and Princeton were always very good,” Cinotte said. “One year, Princeton, us and St. Bede were all close to being undefeated where we couldn’t even seed the teams because of the talent in the tournament.

“It was such a strong local, regional tournament. It had a huge fan base back in the day because of how strong it was.”

Top teams Mendota has claimed the most Lady Bruins Christmas Classic championships with nine — coming in three three-peats.

Under coach Randy Weibel, the Lady Trojans won titles from 1987-89 and from 1991-93.

“When Randy Weibel came to Men-

dota, they dominated the tournament for quite a while,” Carlson said.

Mendota’s most recent three-peat came from 2012-14 behind twins Abby and Ally Bromenschenkel and Amy Devitt.

“The run Mendota had with the Bromenschenkel girls, those were some high quality teams,” McGunnigal said.

Eureka has dominated the tournament in recent years with titles in 2011, 2015-16 and 20-18-19. The Lady Hornets also reached the title game in 2017 against Fieldcrest, but the game wasn’t played due to inclement weather.

IVC also had five titles, while the host Lady Bruins have claimed the top prize six times while appearing in the championship game 15 times — five more appearances than any other school.

L-P, Princeton and Bureau Valley have captured two titles each, while Hall and Putnam County each have one.

Back-and-forth game One of the most memorable games in tournament history was the 2005 championship game between rivals St. Bede and Hall.

The Lady Red Devils finished the 2005-06 season 29-4, while the Lady Bruins went 27-6.

Hall advanced to the Class A state tournament, beating St. Bede in the Mendota Sectional final along the way.

GROUND MAINTENANCE PERSON

Putnam County Conservation District is looking for a ground maintenance person. Responsibilities include finish mowing two sites weekly, rough mowing large acre areas monthly, maintaining walking trails, keeping brush cut back off trails and removing downed trees that fall across horse and walking trails.

Able to drive a tractor, plow roads and parking areas in the winter. Basic upkeep of equipment, changing oil in mowers and tractor when needed yearly and changing mower blades out as needed and be able to use a chainsaw.

Cleaning shelters, cabin, and education room for reservations when needed. Able to work independently during all seasons outdoors, valid driver's license and able to pass a background check and drug test.

Pay rate dependent on job skill. IMRF retirement plan with fulltime status. Summer work schedule March 1- Sept 30, 80 hours bi-weekly. Oct 1- Feb 28 Winter schedule 64 hours bi-weekly. Must be flexible to adjust schedule to fulltime year around if needed.

IVCC Theatre Department’s releases second online production Show features pop holiday music OGLESBY — The IVCC Theatre Department released its second online production of the season on Dec. 20 with “Cool Yule! The Big Fat Holly Jolly Covidian Christmas Special!”

Featuring a large cast of 24, “Cool Yule!” is an homage to the multiple holiday specials televised in the 1960s.

“We decided to do this in an unexpected and fun way,” said Don Grant Zellmer, IVCC director and choreographer of musical theatre. “Once we started brainstorming this idea, the more we realized it opened a lot of opportunities for comedy as well as showcasing the amazing talent our area offers.”

The show features pop holiday music, as well as traditional tunes and some novelty numbers. The cast is made up of students, alumni, and community members, and is being filmed by film and theatre student Reid Tomasson, Oglesby.

“We are very fortunate to have

Reid in our theatre family with his abilities for film making. The quality of the recorded performances are very professional and slick,” said Zellmer. “I think our audiences will be delighted and highly entertained by the finished product.”

Preparing a show — even virtually — during a pandemic presents a unique set of challenges. Theatre Professor Dr. David Kuester explained, “we follow protocol to the letter, and go even a little further.”

The rehearsing and filming were spread out to ensure social distancing with temperature checks and masks required of all cast and crew.

“While it’s bittersweet to be performing on this huge stage for an audience of two, it’s also a creative outlet that we all crave,” said IVCC student Ashley Hurst. “I’m so thankful we’re able to this until live theatre returns.” she said. “I feel like everyone is just giving their all since opportunities to perform right now are nonexistent.

I’m anxious for the show to air.”
