“My grandmother used to make cookies during the holidays for her church and would give them out in similar fashion as we do to people in her town,” Dean said.

“I guess back in 2009, something clicked in me, and that’s where it began.”

The annual baking event started when he asked if he could use the fire department’s kitchen to bake a large quantity of cookies.

news@putnamcountyrecord.com GRANVILLE — While books are most closely associated with libraries, regular patrons know librarians are also important to a library visit.

Linda Garcia, the Granville librarian for seven years, recently retired.

While children attending the library’s reading programs and other events will no doubt miss her warmth and friendliness, she said she’ll miss them just as much.

“I’m going to really miss my relationship with my patrons, and especially all the children I’ve come to know,” Garcia said.

“Our library has a strong children’s program, and some of these children I’ve known since they were coming here in strollers.”

About the library The Granville Library is part of the Putnam County Library district and its headquarters are in the Hennepin branch.

Other district libraries are in Standard, McNabb, Magnolia, and Putnam. The Putnam County Public Library District is also a member of the Prairie Area Library System.

Garcia said the children’s reading programs were an enjoyable way to satisfy her longtime desire to be a kindergarten teacher.

“I guess I’m just a frustrated teacher,” she said with a laugh.

Granville Township office, the small area where the office and library had to share space for nearly two decades.

“I’m very proud to have been a part of that, and to

have been able to give my input with designing the layout, helping to install the art which had been in storage for so long, and welcoming the patrons to the new location,” she said.

One of her favorite library events was last year’s Christmas program, which more than 60 children attended.

Garcia’s husband retired last year, and she’ll be joining him as they plan to spend more time with their six grandchildren.

“We’re going to be able to travel more, and I’ll also be doing a lot of babysitting and also visiting the YMCA more,” she said.

She added she feels very fortunate to have worked with so many good people through the library, and also greatly enjoyed her relationships with her patrons, young and old.

“Linda was a great employee and loved by our patrons. She’ll be greatly missed,” Putnam County Library Director Jay Kalman said.

IVCC to launch Certified Medical Assistant program Alum donates funds to finance it OGLESBY — Illinois Valley Community College is planning the launch of a Certified Medical Assistant program in 2019, thanks in part to the generosity of 1951 alumnus Ralph Scriba, trustees learned Dec. 14.

IVCC President Jerry Corcoran said district hospital officials have encouraged IVCC to consider starting the Ralph program as Scriba employment opportunities for CMAs are expected to increase dramatically over the next decade.

By 2026, the number of working CMAs is expected to rise 29 percent, according to the U.S. Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Medical assistants perform both administrative and clinical work in physician’s offices, hospitals and clinics.

Scriba, a philanthropist from Palos Verdes, Calif., has pledged $50,000 in 2018 to assist IVCC with the purchase of equipment, software and licensing to ensure accreditation in advance of the fall 2019

start-up.

“Our goal is to add CMA to our already impressive list of health career options,” Corcoran said.

“Ralph’s support ensures the program will have the resources it needs to succeed.”

Scriba, a native of Troy Grove, was honored Oct. 23 with the naming of the Ralph Scriba Conference Center in the Peter Miller Community Technology Center for his previous $250,000 in donations to IVCC. An alumnus of LaSalle-Peru-Oglesby Junior College, Scriba moved to California in the early 1950s and eventually founded aircraft parts supplier Swift-Cor.

Levy approved In other action, the board gave final approval to an $11.8 million tax levy for 2017, up less than 5 percent over the actual 2016 levy of $11.3 million. As a result of the levy, the owner of a $120,000 home can expect taxes equal to or slightly less than 2016, Cheryl Roelfsema, IVCC vice president for Business Services and Finance, said.

Roelfsema said the levy assures the college is at the maximum rate for the education fund and operations

and maintenance fund, the two accounts most crucial to IVCC’s daily operations.

There will likely be a slight increase in the district’s equalized assessed valuation due to Marquis Energy’s Hennepin plant adding $18 million in EAV and preliminary numbers from LaSalle County, the district’s largest county, showing a 2 percent increase in EAV. The assessment for Exelon’s LaSalle Station nuclear power plant remained at $430 million but will rise to $435 million in 2018 and $460 million in 2019.

IVCC draws taxes from all or parts of eight counties: LaSalle, Bureau, Putnam, Marshall, Lee, Livingston, Grundy and DeKalb.

The board also approved:

• An Associate of Applied Science degree in agronomy that will begin Jan. 10.

By fall, the college’s revitalized ag program will be offering 14 courses, up from three classes two years ago.

• The appointments of Patrice Hess as director of Learning Resources, Shane Lange as dean of Workforce Development, and Judy Day as secretary to the Board.

• The bid of Southern Bus & Mobility for the lease of two vans for 36 months for $9,498 annually. The vehi-

cles will replace the existing shuttle buses when their leases expire in February.

• An intergovernmental agreement for “joint action in regard to certain real estate valuation proceedings” with Exelon’s Generating Plant. The taxing bodies want to negotiate an extension of the 2008 agreement they signed with Exelon that expires at the end of 2019.

• About 30 former employees attended the IVCC Foundation’s 12th annual Retirees Reception on Nov. 16.

• In his remarks, Corcoran noted the recent death of longtime Jacobs Library employee Evelyn Moyle.

“Evelyn gave 27 years of her life to IVCC, eight as head librarian. Ed Anderson, our director of learning resources when Evelyn retired in 1997, credited her with ‘bringing the library into the 21st Century by leading the effort to get

the library automated and online.’” Moyle was inducted into the IVCC-LPO Hall of Fame in 2012.

• The Nov. 29 Support Staff Craft Fair raised $1,165 for the Foundation’s Student Emergency Living Needs fund.

• Seven students received certificates and another five earned AAS degrees at the Dec. 5 therapeutic massage graduation.

• The Dec. 6 “Honors-palooza” featured Honors Program capstone project presentations by dozens of students.

• More than 100 students participated in the Section 7 FFA Agronomy and Dairy Foods contest at IVCC Dec. 6. “Many of the section agriculture instructors and FFA advisers had not been on campus in a while, especially since the CTC was built and new wings were added to J Building,” said Willard Mott, ag program coordinator. “They were impressed with our campus and supportive of the agriculture program.”

• Former IVCC President and trustee Larry Huffman will deliver the keynote address at IVCC’s 52nd annual commencement May 19 in the gym.

• COOKIES Continued from Page 1 His plan was to not only bake Christmas cookies for family and friends, but to honor his grandmother’s tradition and deliver some to seniors in the Hennepin area.

A few fellow firefighters pitched in to help during the first year, and by the next winter the idea had caught on and involved most of the department, as well as several of their family members and friends who helped deliver cookies to even more people.

Each year the tradition has grown, and this year nearly 200 boxes of handmade cookies were baked by department members and their wives. More were baked and donated by community members, including extras from the Hennepin United Methodist Church cookie walk. A few of the firefighters also donated 16 dozen of the popular fire department cutout cookies baked and frosted by the Spring Valley Bakery. “We try to hit those who are retired, have lost somebody loved or any other persons who just need to have a good holiday pick-me-up. The list

is always evolving, growing and sometimes sadly shrinking,� fellow firefighter and board member Quentin Buffington said.

The amount and variety of cookies varies from year to year, but boxes typically have between 18 and 26 different treats.

This year, 61 different ingredients were used. “The holiday cutouts, stained glass, peanut butter and peanut blossom cookies are always crowd favorites,�

Buffington said.

How does a simple and kind act during the holidays, such as delivering a box of cookies to a senior, help the community as a whole? “It allows us to connect with people we might not get to regularly see,�

Buffington said. “A lot of times, we find out important information in regards to the well-being of our residents while delivering cookies, and of course it’s just another act of kindness that reminds so many people why they chose to live in small-town USA.�

Dean was asked how it feels to have seen this continued family tradition grow into what it is today. “It’s pretty awesome to see so many people volunteer their weekend time

as the Christmas carols played from the speaker on the fire engine. “Whether you’re receiving cookies, seeing your neighbor get cookies, or working with us and delivering cookies, I’m pretty sure everybody’s hearts were left a little fuller, and a few stomachs, too.�

GRANVILLE — Linda Diane Robinson, 77, of Granville passed away Monday, Dec. 11, 2017, at her residence.

Linda was born Oct. 28, 1940, in Granville to Quentin and Dorothy (Jeppson) Tyler. She married Fred Robinson on June 18, 1960.

She graduated from Hopkins High School and taught Sunday school at the Lutheran Church in her early years. She was also a devoted worker to Family Pride Cleaners in Peru for 24 years.

Survivors include a daughter, Mindy Robinson; four grandchildren, Savanna Lansing, Gianna Rigazio, Aden Robinson and Emily Gifford; one great-grandchild, Taylee Prater; a brother-inlaw, Charles Robinson, a sister-in-law, Romona “Joan” Cofoid; two nephews, Mike and Steve Cofoid; and many great-nieces and great-nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Fred Robinson, who died Feb. 15, 1994; and two nephews, Greg Cofoid and Gary Cofoid.

Services were held Saturday, Dec. 16, at the Dysart-Cofoid Funeral Chapel in Granville with the Rev. Bob Kinas officiating.

Burial was in the Granville Cemetery. Visitation was held prior to the services in the funeral home.

Contributions may be made to donor’s choice.

Pallbearers were Mike Cofoid, Steve Cofoid, Austin Prater, Adam Cofoid, Brian Cofoid, Matthew Gifford and Roger Wright.

STANDARD — Nancy Passini, 84, of Standard passed away Monday, Dec. 11, 2017, at St. Margaret’s Hospital in Spring Valley.

Nancy was born Oct. 29, 1933, in Chicago to Willard and Myrtle (Decker) Lansing. She married LeRoy Passini July 4, 1953, in Granville.

She graduated from Hopkins High School in the class of 1951. Nancy was a homemaker. She worked at the Standard Post Office and was a secretary for Helmig Law Firm.

Survivors include two sons, Robert (Mary Ann) Passini of rural Granville and Ronald Passini of Standard; two sisters, Carolyn Grosenbach of Bloomington and Paula Neps of Florida; two grandchildren, Sara Passini of Peoria and Roger (Tara) Passini of Woodway, Texas; and two great-grandchildren, Ryder and James.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, LeRoy, who died July 17, 2009; and one brother, Robert Lansing.

Services were held Saturday, Dec. 16, at the Dysart-Cofoid Funeral Chapel in Granville with the Rev. Dr. Ron McNeill officiating. Burial was in the Granville Cemetery.

Keep Christmas well, and its spirit well after Inspired by charity, mercy, kindness and love, Putnam County residents know how to keep Christmas well. Keeping the Christmas spirit well into the new year would be a joyous sequel to a special season.

T

he miser-turned-benefactor in Charles Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol,” Ebenezer Scrooge, learned a life-changing lesson from three ghostly visitors.

Totally transformed, Scrooge embraced the holiday spirit, much to the surprise of all who knew his former curmudgeonly ways.

“And it was always said of him, that he knew how to keep Christmas well,” Dickens wrote.

Keeping Christmas well.

Scrooge did it by changing his focus from money to mankind.

Charity. Mercy. Kindness. Love.

Those became his new watchwords.

What about Putnam County residents?

Do they keep Christmas well?

We have only to read our newspaper to know they do.

Stories tell of many folks who keep Christmas well.

They prepare Christmas baskets at the Putnam County Food Pantry to distribute to local residents who need a helping hand this holiday season.

They participate in holiday activities sponsored by the Hennepin Park District.

They take part in Christmas season activities sponsored by the Putnam County Library District.

They decorate their homes with colorful Christmas lights.

Hennepin firefighters, spouses and loved ones bake large quantities of cookies and other treats to distribute for the holidays.

Members of the Putnam County High School Student Council host a special Christmas with Santa and the Panther, featuring crafts, cookie decorating, pictures with Santa, and a holiday movie.

Residents hold other Christmas activities, such as Granville’s annual Christmas celebration, which attracted a standing-room-only crowd this year at village hall.

Putnam County Rotary Club members distribute Christmas poinsettias to senior citizens throughout the county as part of their Poinsettia Project.

Christmas Eve and Christmas Day services at local churches will give Christians the opportunity to keep Christmas well through prayerful worship and inspirational music.

And then, around the Christmas tree, family gatherings, be they large or small, are a greatly anticipated way of keeping Christmas well.

With reverence, we recall the story of the babe in the manger.

With glad hearts, we share the joy of the season.

Keeping Christmas well?

“May that be truly said of us, and all of us!” Dickens wrote.

What about after Dec. 25?

Keeping Christmas well need not end the day after Christmas.

The spirit of charity, mercy, kindness and love is just as welcome — and yearned for — the rest of the year.

Keeping the Christmas spirit well into the new year would be a joyous sequel to this special season.

It’s our Christmas wish for you.

The reality of Santa and belief SPOILER ALERT: Do not let your Santa believers read this, or read it first and judge from there. I’m not arrogant enough to think that anyone under the age of 40 even wants to read my columns, but just in case, you’ve been warned.

••• ith the Christmas season upon us, and a young child in the house several years ago, I had somewhat prepared myself for the age-old statement, “I don’t believe in Santa any more.”

I don’t think we can ever fully prepare ourselves for the loss of innocence of our oldest child. There is something disheartening about knowing they have moved on to another stage of belief.

As much as I had pondered how I would respond, I was quite impressed with myself when I was finally confronted with the issue.

I don’t believe in lying. It’s all too messy of an affair and with my feeble memory – too hard to keep track of which story has been told to which person.

Truth is always best, but there are occasions when the truth sometimes seems too harsh, or when it seems just a tad inappropriate for the situation. The loss of Santa in a child’s world is one of those occasions.

COMMENTARY Lori Boekeloo Many have great issues with the fat man in the red suit and his commercialization in the Christmas season. I choose to focus on the essence of Santa.

His concept is good. He gave toys to children who had nothing. He was selfless. He worked hard to make others happy.

When we speak of Santa in our house, it is not to detract from the celebration of Jesus’ birth, but to enhance the celebration of giving and the spirit of love.

My daughter one day declared to me, “Santa isn’t real.” I asked her why she felt that way.

Her response was, “I know YOU put the packages under the tree. I know YOU wrote the note he left last year. I know YOU put the stuff in our stockings. I know YOU did all the things you let us believe that Santa did.” ( I also eat the cookies every year. Why should they go to waste?)

So I said to her, “Does that mean God isn’t real?” She would never dream of questioning that reality at her age, and I knew it. Indignantly, she

said, “Of course God is real!”

So I told her that I do God’s work. I help out at church. I perform tasks that many attribute to godly work. I said that her argument against Santa meant that God didn’t exist either. I left it at that, walking away and sweating the whole time. I was hoping to invoke in her some thinking. I did.

(Yeah!)

Time went by and I went about my business, waiting for her response to the whole situation. Shortly she came to me and said, “Mom, I was thinking about what you said, and I think Santa IS real.”

Chalk one up to Fat Old Mom ingenuity!

“It’s not what we see that makes something real, it’s how we perceive it and how it makes us feel.”

I know it won’t last forever, and someday she will know that the bearded man doesn’t come down our chimney (if we had one!) on Christmas Eve, but I have held back her innocence for one more year, and now she understands the reason for the season just a little better.

Face to face with a predator, and the lifelong consequences Crimes against kids should never be swept under rug

felt the hay scratch through the back of my thin white T-shirt.

The man’s hands gripped my spindly arms as his weight bore down on me. As I struggled beneath his powerful frame, he kissed my sweaty face, and I struggled to break free.

I gasped, “Let me go,” as his hands grasped on my writhing form.

I was 12 years old, and I had come face to face with a predator.

Most folks who know me now think of a big man. But back then, I was slight, no match for a full-grown man. But somehow, I broke free and ran.

In my 52 years, I’ve never had a more terrifying moment.

Never.

I told my mother what happened. She listened quietly as we sat at the kitchen table.

She told me to take a shower and then instructed me to never speak of it again.

The predator had come to work on our farm to help bale hay that day. He’d graduated from college and was an aspiring academic. An adult.

For years, I blamed myself for what happened. Like many 12-year-old boys, I could be

But I was a child. And he was an adult.

That kind of behavior is never acceptable. If I hadn’t broken free, far worse things could have happened.

It is never acceptable to touch someone against their will, let alone throw a person on the ground and kiss and grope them. That isn’t “roughhousing” or “horseplay.” It’s criminal assault.

I know that now. But back then, I blamed myself. It was especially hard because I was forbidden to ever speak of it. I wondered what I did to provoke him? What did I do to bring this on myself? Was I a bad person because this happened to me?

Those aren’t unusual things to contemplate. Over the years, as a reporter, I’ve talked to plenty of survivors of assaults. They, too, wondered what they did wrong.

The answer is, nothing.

No one but the perpetrator is responsible.

The lasting impact of such crimes is great. A decade later, I’d wake up in terror in my college dorm room reliving the

incident.

It shaped me. I’ve always been a bit shy and awkward in my personal interactions, and this incident made me sink even further into myself.

And I became reticent to trust others.

After more than 20 years passed, I thought only I remembered what happened.

Then my mother mentioned it, her voice cracking.

She was a good woman, unprepared to deal with something like this.

In the 1970s, such incidents almost always were swept under the rug.

It was often viewed as “workplace misbehavior” or “boys being stupid.” But such incidents rarely were viewed as the criminal acts that they are.

So, why do I bring this up now? After all, 40 years have passed.

Well, I’m now the father of a 12-year-old. I don’t want anything like this to happen to her or her two sisters.

I survived. And it has made me wiser and stronger.

I know this: crimes like this should never be swept under the rug.

Nov. 11 for ceremonies at Veterans Park and for the coffee held at the American Legion Building afterwards. Nearly 100 items were donated to the Putnam Food Pantry for the NSDAR Day of Service project.

IVCC students participate in ninth etiquette dinner OGLESBY — Illinois Valley Community College’s Career Services office recently hosted a Business Etiquette Dinner for students in the Ralph Scriba Conference Center.

Thirty-one students, along with IVCC faculty, administration and six local employers, experienced a meet-and-greet with hors d’oeuvres and a four-course meal. Instructors Bob Reese and Cory Tomasson presented proper business etiquette before each course.

Reese said, “Resumés get you in the door, your business etiquette and charisma get you the job. The simplest faux pas in dining etiquette can show an employer that you make decisions abruptly or without an open mind.”

In addition to learning about business etiquette, students practiced networking with employers and learned what to do in awkward social situations.

While most employers were from career program industries, students

were encouraged to think outside the “industry” box and remember there are many facets to managing a business, such as accounting and/ or payroll departments, customer service or marketing.

Students sent thank-you notes following the event.

Martha Hoffman of Earlville wrote, “I learned so much and I’m better prepared for my future career. I can now confidently interact and network and I know I will use these skills frequently.”

Career and Student Services Associate Lisa Witalka said, “This is our ninth Etiquette Dinner and we are grateful for our employers that were willing to give up their evening to participate.

“While we aim to educate our students, our employers also commented that they learned a few things and will benefit from knowing just how well prepared our students are to enter the highly competitive job market,” she added.

Superintendent’s message

I want to take this opportunity to wish all the families, community members and Putnam County residents a safe, relaxing and happy holiday season!

Also, with this time of year comes the possibility of inclement weather that could interrupt the plans for our normal school day. As district superintendent, I want everyone to know that any decisions regarding questionable weather and the safety of our students is taken very seriously. The decision on whether or not school will be cancelled due to weather related issues will try to be made as soon as possible. As a rule of thumb, I would like to make the decision prior to 6 a.m.

However, Mother Nature does not always cooperate with that time table.

In an effort to promote more efficient communication between the school district and families, we have developed a free new app that can be downloaded on any smartphone or device that uses the Internet. If you visit your app store and search Putnam County Schools, you should find an app available with the Black & Gold PC Shield created by Apptegy. Please feel free to download the app.

Also, in order to receive any of the informational notifications sent by the school district you must allow noti-

fications when prompted during the download. This app will be utilized for pushing out notices such as weather related decisions, early dismissals, and important information and events from each school. Also, if you visit our website at www.pcschools535.org, you can click on Menu, then under District click on Communication Data Entry. There will be a link for the form to fill out with name and cell phone numbers if you would like to receive text/SMS notifications as well.

Anyone that has already downloaded the app should have already been receiving information so long as you allowed to receive notifications. We will still contact the local radio stations as well.

However, this app allows for us to push this information immediately which is very helpful as we know how hectic morning schedules and routines are on a daily basis. If anyone has questions on the app, please feel free to contact me via email or call the district office.
