Pickup times 8-9:30 a.m.; deliveries that morning GRANVILLE — The Putnam County Food Pantry reminds those families who have requested Christmas baskets that the baskets will be ready for pickup between 8 and 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 21.

The baskets will be distributed from Bonucchi Hall, located on the main floor of the new addition to the Granville United Church of Christ. The hall is in the upstairs of the same building as the food pantry.

For those who specifically requested that their baskets be delivered, the baskets will arrive at their

homes sometime that same morning.

These persons are asked to please try to be home that morning to accept the baskets.

Mid-American Growers asks for permission to grow marijuana Granville facility already used for hemp production

BY KIM SHUTE Shaw Media HENNEPIN — The Putnam County Board heard last week from Mid-American Growers, formerly known as Color Point, about a request to amend existing county ordinances to allow the growing of medical and recreational marijuana.

In advance of the Jan. 1 legalization of recreational marijuana, many Illinois businesses are gearing up to get into the cannabis business. Known again as Mid-American Growers, the former flower grower wants to start growing medical and recreational marijuana in addition to the hemp production they’re already involved in.

Color Point was purchased in June

by MichiCann Medical Inc., which operates as Red, White & Bloom for use as a hemp production facility.

Hemp grown at the Granville facility is used for the cannabidiol (CBD) market. Cannabidiol products do not contain any of the chemicals in marijuana that produce a high.

The Granville-based grower has the largest indoor hemp production facility in the world, utilizing a 3,612,866-square-foot greenhouse and including 451,282 square feet of production and warehouse facilities on more than 231 acres of land.

Lack of candidates for board remains to be addressed HENNEPIN — The Putnam County Board hasn’t yet officially addressed the lack of candidates to fill two upcoming vacancies, but there is a plan in place should no one step up.

The deadline to file for a place on next spring’s primary passed without anyone stepping up to put their name in the ring. Two seats, held by Democrats Sheila Haage (Granville) and Brad Popurella (McNabb), are up for grabs.

County Clerk Dan Kuhn said at last week’s county board meeting he’ll need to check with the Illinois State Board of Elections to determine the exact steps that are next, but his understanding is that the parties can appoint by committee persons to run in the November general election.

— By Kim Shute, Shaw Media man Steve Malavolti said the board already has been working on an ordinance prior to implementation of the law, so he doesn’t foresee any issues with the request.

“We already decided to allow and tax the 3 percent on it,” Malavolti said. “They’ll set aside a specific area for it, which will be higher

security. I don’t foresee anyone on the board objecting to it.”

Malavolti said the proposal still will need to go through the zoning board of appeals and the planning commission, which could take about 90 days.

“It won’t be happening right away,” he said.

MCNABB — A Spring Valley man died in a head-on crash with a semi at 1:51 p.m. Dec. 11 on Route 89 about 1.5 miles south of McNabb.

Putnam County Death Investigator Bob Cofoid identified the victim as the car’s driver, Henry “Hank” S. Bland, 81.

According to the Putnam County Sheriff ’s Office, Bland attempted to pass a northbound semi, and the car struck a southbound semi head-

on. He was killed instantly, a press release stated.

Bland died from multiple blunt force injuries sustained in the crash, according to Cofoid.

The crash occurred in a relatively flat, open area about a quarter of a mile south of Edgewood Park Golf Course.

The Putnam County Death Investigator’s Office is awaiting final results from the autopsy, and toxicology is pending and may take

four to six weeks before completion, Cofoid stated.

The investigation is continuing with the Putnam County Sheriff ’s Office and the Putnam County Death Investigator’s Office. Assisting at the scene were the Illinois State Police Reconstruction Units, McNabb Fire, Magnolia Fire, Standard Fire-Rescue, Putnam County Ambulance and IDOT units.

Authorities, with help from Illinois Department of Transportation, closed

Route 89 for approximately four hours between the McNabb Blacktop and Route 18 after the accident.

Both the driver of the southbound semi, Van C. Hock of Toluca, and the northbound semi that was being passed at the time of the crash, Arnold Litwiller of Secor, refused treatment at the scene, according to the sheriff ’s office.

Tracy Byrd booked for Marshall-Putnam Fair Craig Gerdes will open the July 16 concert HENRY — Country music legend Tracy Byrd will be at the 99th Marshall-Putnam Fair on July 16 with Craig Gerdes opening the Thursday show at the fairgrounds.

Gates will open at 5:30 p.m., and the show will start at 7 p.m.

Ticket sales began last week.

“Holdin’ Heaven” was Byrd’s first hit in 1993, after which he went on to release a lineup of hits that Tracy i n c l u d e d “ Wa t e rByrd melon Crawl,” “Big Love,” “I’m From the Country,” “Ten Rounds With Jose Cuervo,” “Drinkin’ Bone” and “The

Keeper of the Stars,” which earned him the Song of the Year title at the 1996 ACM Awards.

Taxable value of property rising in school district

BY CRAIG STERRETT Shaw Media GRANVILLE — The property tax base has grown in recent months in Putnam County.

The overall taxable value — or equalized assessed valuation — of properties in the Putnam County School District grew.

It grew so much that school Superintendent Carl Carlson says the district could capture almost 10 percent more in local tax dollars, without increasing any tax rates.

“Our EAV really jumped,” Carlson said.

Because the school district’s request for local revenue, also known as the tax levy, is increasing by more than 5 percent, the school board must host a truth-in-taxation hearing, which was scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Monday, Dec. 16, at the beginning of the regularly-scheduled board meeting.

More portions of the Marquis Energy ethanol plant at Hennepin are coming onto the tax rolls, Carlson said. Part of the plant is 10 years old now, with enterprise zone tax

benefits running out, so the district will see revenue from the plant.

Carlson is anticipating between $2.8 million and $3 million in corporate personal property replacement tax revenue, too.

Carlson says, yes, he has seen the signs put out, presumably by landowners, advertising their opposition to wind turbines.

He said most of those signs appear in rural areas east of McNabb, around Mount Palatine and stretching into LaSalle County.

Carlson said he can’t speak for the school board, but he’s not opposed to green energy. Neither would he oppose the tax revenue a wind farm could generate for the district. He knows nearby districts such as Princeton, Bureau Valley and Ohio have seen an infusion in cash flow from wind farms.

Separately, Carlson also wouldn’t oppose placing solar energy panels on the junior high building south of McNabb. He said a solar installation there could be on the roof, mostly out of sight to the public in that rural location.

Topics of discussion in the Putnam County School District include needs at the buildings. For example, the district replaced most of the boilers and other appliances in some of the older buildings about 13 years ago, and many will likely need work around the same time.

PERU — Matt “Spooney” Boehm, 34, of Peru passed away Thursday, Dec. 12, 2019, at his residence with his loving family by his side.

Matt was born May 20, 1985, in Peru to Thomas and Sherri (Bradley) Boehm. He received two associate degrees at Illinois Valley Community College and a bachelor’s degree at Illinois State University.

Matt was employed at Illinois Valley Community College as technical director for the theater. He was a member of Stage 212 and River Valley Players, and in the past worked for Prather Entertainment Group and Theatre by the Sea. Survivors include his mother, Sherri Boehm of Mark; his maternal grandmother, Marjorie Bradley of Peru; and one uncle, David Bradley of Elmhurst. Also surviving are numerous members of the Boehm and Bradley families, and many friends in the theater and online gaming groups.

He was preceded in death by his father, Thomas Boehm; his paternal grandparents; his maternal grandfather, Dennis “Buck” Bradley; and his maternal great-grandparents, Albert and Beryl Pyszka.

A memorial service/celebration of life for Matt was held Monday, Dec. 16, at the IVCC Theatre with Pastor Raymond Mitchell of Praise Center Assembly of God and Steve Chamberlain of Christ Family Four Square officiating. The service included friends and colleagues Don Grant Zellmer and Dr. David Kuester. Cremation rites have been accorded. A light meal was served after the service for sharing and social time. Matt’s family was available for visiting and sharing time prior to the service.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the IVCC Matt Boehm Memorial Scholarship fund or Cops for Cancer.

The Dysart-Cofoid Funeral Chapel in Granville assisted the family.

HERRIN — Frank Sidney Bonham, 84, of Herrin passed away at 12:12 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 10, 2019, at the Herrin Hospital.

Frank was born Sept. 27, 1935, in Herrin to Frank Vernon and Laura Sydney (Bell) Bonham.

Frank was the food and beverage manager of Herrin Elks Lodge 1146 in Herrin.

Frank was a veteran of the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He was a member of Herrin Elks Lodge 1146, Herrin Prairies Masonic Lodge 693, the Moose Lodge in West Frankfort, American Legion Post 645 in Herrin and the Baker-Ladd VFW Post 1567 in Herrin.

Surviving are a son and daughter-in-law, Jeffery and Kimberly Bonham of Plainfield; three grandchildren, Kaylie Bonham, Jessica Bonham and Christopher Hess; his longtime

Last week, more than 100 Walmart drivers hauled 100,000 wreaths 40,000 miles and stopped at 40 distribution centers on their way to national cemeteries across the United States. This is the first time drivers from Spring Valley will carry a load. Wreaths Across America is a non-profit organization formed as an extension of the Arlington Wreath Project. It began in 1992 with the donation and laying of 5,000 Christmas wreaths at Arlington National Cemetery by Morrill Worchester of the Worchester Wreath Co. in Harrington, Maine. Dec. 14 was National Wreath-Laying Day. Walmart is the largest corporate supporter of Wreaths Across America. Sanders, from Rochelle, has been with Walmart for 16 years.

Veterans selected to receive quilts GRANVILLE — At their last meeting of the year on Dec. 10, a group of veterans from American Legion Granville Post 180 were selected to receive patriotic quilts. The quilts were sewn by 10 members of the Stitches organization of Sacred Heart Church in Granville.

In past years, the Stitches group made prayer shawls and more than 100 pillow cases that were included in charity baskets distributed to the needy at Christmas.

This year, the group decided to make the quilts in patriotic red, white and blue patterns and donate them to deserving members of the post. Making the presentation were Photo contributed three representatives of the church group — Pam Ellena, Edna Struthers Pictured with the quilts donated by the Stitches organization are Edna Struthers, Mary Edgerley, Doug Ossola, Jerry Masini, Gary and Mary Edgerley.

LASALLE — Stage 212 in LaSalle is currently seeking submissions from directors for the 2021 season.

The organization is looking for a wide variety of well-known, highly recognizable musicals, dramas and comedies to fill the winter, spring, summer and fall slots, but will also entertain proposals for a special “off-season” production, typically small cast and a little out of the ordinary, to run in a slot outside of the regular season. The organization will consider all submissions, including repeats of past shows if they have not been performed in the past 15 years.

Anyone interested in submitting a play for consideration should visit the Stage 212 website at stage212.org

for application information. Visitors to stage212.org will find a reference list of all productions Stage 212 has put on in its history, as well as a director’s résumé and application to be completed and submitted online. Applications are due Feb. 2, 2020.

The latest acquisition is a new exercise bicycle for the hospital’s cardiac rehab unit. HENRY — The Chief Senachwine Chapter NSDAR embraced a recent project supported by the Illinois DAR chairmanship of Women’s Issues by donating more than 190 personal care items to the women’s shelter in Princeton.

Illinois State Chairwoman for Women’s Issues, Janice Hall, encouraged the project for women who flee from domestic violence to various women’s shelters, often without personal items for themselves or their children.

Chief Senachwine Women’s Issues Chairwoman Carol Byrd inspired members to participate in the project, labeled OOPS (Operation Old Purses). In November and December, members donated purses

filled with a variety of items, such as toothbrushes and toothpaste, mouthwash, dental floss, deodorant, soap, lotion, shampoo, conditioner, lip gloss, monthly products, makeup and remover, cleanser, laundry soap, baby powder, shower caps, perfume, nail care and hair care items, socks, boots, Kleenex, hand sanitizer, Chapstick, shower caps, razors and miniature Bibles.

Overall, members donated 26 purses or backpacks with 192 items in them, valued at approximately $430. The Chief Senachwine Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution joins the 100-plus Illinois chapters in supporting their communities in God, home and country interests.

PC falls to Storm in double overtime

BY TOMMY ROSE Shaw Media SPRING VALLEY — The 2019 Colmone Classic basketball tournament continued on Dec. 12 with Putnam County and Bureau Valley squaring off in an all-out battle, with the Storm getting the big buckets and free throws they needed to pull out a 92-84 double overtime win over the Panthers.

“Hot diggity, that was fun,” BV coach Jason Marquis said with a laugh. “We made some stupid mistakes down the stretch, but mistakes, death, and taxes are inevitable. You’ve just got to learn from them and not repeat ‘em.”

“Truthfully, it was a close enough game where we played hard for five or six minutes and got ourselves back into it and got a little lead,” Putnam County head coach Harold Fay said. “Trying to get the point across that we need to play like that for the entire game.”

The Storm got off to a good start, draining a hat trick of three pointers (one by Adam Johnson and two

by Dalton Dean) to jump ahead 9-3 in the early going.

The Panthers then scored eight unanswered points to take an 11-9 lead, but BV went on a 7-0 run of their own to end the first period back in their favor at 16-11.

Salisbury (20), Adam Johnson (13) and Jonah Johnson (11), extended their advantage to 31-22 at halftime and 47-36 at the end of the third period.

In the fourth period, however, the Panthers’ image got bigger in BV’s rearview mirror when buckets by Matthew Liebhart (PC points leader with 30), Jakob Pyszka (15) and Nick Mattern (6) brought the score to a 69-69 tie with 21 seconds left in the game.

Salisbury was able to draw a foul and knock in a couple of free throws to get BV back in the lead at 71-69, but the Panthers’ Liebhart struck again with a basket to even it up 71-71 at the end of regulation time.

The Stor m were 29-36 in free throws, and Salisbury, shooting 11-13 in the game, was glad his trips to the charity stripe made a difference for BV. The teams traded the lead back and forth in the next five minutes, with Liebhart and Pyszka both fouling out and Jacob Wiesbrock (14 points) having a hero’s turn for PC with an under-the-goal basket to tie it up again 80-80 at the end of the first overtime.

The Storm got their second wind in the second OT, creating a points cushion just enough to finally hold off the Panthers and collect a hardfought 92-84 victory.

Fieldcrest 41, Putnam County 33: Ella Goodrich scored 15 points to go along with eight steals and six rebounds Dec. 10 to lead the Knights to a non-conference victory in Minonk.

Ashlyn May and Nevada Park each added eight points for Fieldcrest (9-0).

Caitlyn Cioni led the Lady Panthers with 11 points, while Sophie Harris added nine points.

Putnam County 43, Peoria Christian 38: Liv Lamis scored a career-high 14 points Dec. 12 to lead the Lady Panthers to a Tri-County Conference victory in Granville.

Molly Boyd had 13 points for Putnam County, while Sophia Harris added 10 points and eight rebounds.

PC to play in Lady Bruins Classic Dec. 20-23 Eureka (8-2) and Fieldcrest (10-0) have drawn the top seeds for this year’s Lady Bruins Christmas Classic, which runs Dec. 20-23 at St. Bede Academy Eureka heads the Green Pool with #3 Mendota (8-4), #5 Putnam County (6-4) and #7 Princeton (5-5). Joining Fieldcrest in the White Pool are seeds #4 Seneca (7-2), #6 Kewanee (5-3) and #8 St. Bede (1-10).

Putnam County will open at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 20, against the top-seeded Lady Hornets.

The Lady Panthers come back Saturday, Dec. 21, vs.

Princeton at noon and against Mendota at 6 p.m.

There will be a slate of eight pool games in all that day, with the finals night slated to begin at 2 p.m.

In a triangular Dec. 11 at East Peoria, Jesse Lucas won by pin and decision at 106 pounds as the PutnamCounty Hall wrestling team lost to Orion and East Peoria.

Lucas won by 10-6 decision in a 53-9 loss to Orion and won by pin in a 66-18 loss to East Peoria.

PUTNAM COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE

Sheriff issues appeal to citizens to fight crime Responding to the increasing number of people wanting to assist law enforcement officials and build a stronger partnership in the fight against crime, Sheriff Kevin Doyle announced that current members in Putnam County are receiving their annual renewals as Associate Members of the Illinois Sheriffs’ Association.

Membership renewals go out in the mail in early January. If someone is not a current member and would

like to become part of the program, they may become a member for as little as $25, while businesses can show their support for a $50 contribution.

The funding provides critically important technical resources, training and legislative support on key criminal justice issues.

Contributions are tax deductible, and unlike other organizations in Illinois, the membership program does not solicit member-

ship by telephone.

“With government funding becoming increasingly difficult to secure, the membership drive has taken on greater importance than ever before,” Doyle stated. “The funding is vital to helping us carry out our mission of making our communities safer places to live, work and play.”
