St. Bede Academy sets record on largest-ever day of giving

More than 320 donors raise over $165K on Giving Tuesday PERU — St. Bede Academy surpassed its goal on Giving Tuesday, observed Dec. 1.

During the daylong event, more than 320 alumni, parents, friends, faculty and staff connected with the Peru school contributed to the St. Bede Fund, raising more than $165,000. The day of giving broke records for the school both in participation numbers and dollars, according to a news release from the school, making Giving Tuesday 2020 St. Bede’s largest day of giving ever.

“The faculty and staff have been working diligently each day to keep the safety and the best academic interest of our 275-day and boarding students at heart,” said Abbot Philip, OSB Class of ’65, in a news release. “We are truly blessed and moved with the impact of our St.

Bede family’s kindness on Giving Tuesday, especially this year. I continue to pray for the health and safety of the world as we start 2021 and look forward to our students remaining on campus.”

St. Bede students are close to finishing the first semester in person and on campus.

“In an extraordinary year filled with new challenges, I am humbled by the overwhelming support and confidence provided by our St. Bede community on Giving Tuesday,” Superintendent Eve Postula said in a news release. “Our determination to deliver in-person instruction this semester, providing our students the spiritual, emotional and academic support they deserve during this confusing time, is driven by the unwavering support and commitment of our alumni, parents and friends.“ The day was set in motion with matches totaling $71,500 from several donors: $15,000 from Gene Bernardoni ’58, $10,000 from Daubert Chemical Co., $10,000 from Michael

Dwyer ’72 and his wife, $5,000 from an anonymous donor, $5,000 from Angelo Perino ’80 and his wife, $5,000 from David Porter ’61, $5,000 from Michael Rossiter ’61 and his wife, $5,000 from Stephen Stevens ’69 and his wife and $1,500 from LaSalle State Bank.

Julia Yaklich, the director of mission advancement and major gifts at the campus, thanked the community for its contributions.

“We are overwhelmed with the kindness and generosity that is truly heartfelt from our St. Bede family,” Yaklich said in a news release. “The outpouring of support continues on this special day year after year, and we are grateful to all who made Giving Tuesday a tremendous success.”

Gifts generated on Giving Tuesday support the St. Bede Fund, which provides a steady stream of income to the school and helps with the day-to-day costs of operation and meeting its annual budget. Gifts to The St. Bede Fund reduce the actual tuition cost by 61%.

BY KIM SHUTE kshute@shawmedia.com HENNEPIN — Putnam County’s treasurer said Monday that refund checks have been issued for overpayment of property taxes.

Kevin Kunkel said about 600 checks went out last week to refund a portion of taxes that some property owners were overcharged for.

About 50 checks were sent to residents who paid using the old bill after corrected bills were issued.

Kunkel said the checks were issued to residents who paid both tax installments before corrected bills could be sent — an error in the levy caused some to be charged incorrectly.

“If anyone hasn’t received their checks, they’ll need to contact me,” Kunkel said, “But only one check has been returned which had an address error and that one has been resent.”

Kunkel said the overages amounted to about $21,000.

During this time, there were no deaths reported. There have been zero COVID-19 related deaths recorded in Putnam County since the start of the pandemic. There have been 59 deaths recorded in Bureau County and six deaths in Marshall County.

SRCCF gives $11K in grants to two local organizations through Women’s Inspired Network

The Starved Rock Country Community Foundation gave $11,000 in grants to two local organizations through the Women’s Inspired Network.

Cathryn Steele, chairwoman of the Women’s Inspired Network, said the network would normally hold a bigger presentation but had to adjust because of the pandemic.

“The award presentation was altered due to COVID, so we were unable to really celebrate the awards,” Steele said. “We plan on a much bigger celebration once we are able to get together in person so we can give these two organizations the celebration they deserve.”

WIN issued a $10,000 grant to Freedom House for free counseling services for victims of domestic violence.

They also presented a $1,000 grant to Starved Rock Center for Therapy and Development for purchase of developmental toys for their participants.

Clete Winkelmann, president and CEO of SRCCF, said the organization is happy to be able to give back to other organizations that help strengthen the community.

“We are so pleased to be able to assist these two wonderful organizations,” Winkelmann said. “Both organizations provide such important services to our community, and without their services, many individuals would go without these services.”

‘I am very hopeful that somehow the IESA can weather this pandemic’

Local school officials react to IESA’s financial crisis, fundraising efforts

BY KEVIN CHLUM kchlum@shawmedia.com For two decades, Greg Peterson has been athletic director and a boys basketball coach at Fieldcrest Middle School.

During that time, he’s seen the positive impact the Illinois Elementary School Association can have on middle school athletics and activities.

“I’ve hosted more regionals, sectionals and state tournaments than I can count,” Peterson said. “We have been fortunate enough to participate in, and enjoy success in, these tournaments. Our kids have even experienced the thrill of placing and winning state championships. Without

the IESA, none of those memories would have been made. The IESA also promotes academic success and good sportsmanship.

“I’m not going to say that the IESA is perfect in everything they do, and I’m sure they would agree. But, they really do try to do what’s in the best interest of our student-athletes.”

In a few months, the IESA may not be around to help students make memories or promote academics and sportsmanship.

With sports seasons and state tournaments canceled over the last nine months due to the COVID19 pandemic, the IESA is facing a severe financial crisis.

This week, the IESA set up a GoFundMe account in hopes of saving the organization.

“The COVID-19 pandemic has had a devastating financial impact on the IESA,” the organization wrote on the GoFundMe page. “We do not receive any funds from the state

of Illinois. We are not a state agency. Most of our operating funds are the result of attendance at the state series events. As those events have been cancelled because of the pandemic, the association has been crippled by the revenue loss.”

The IESA said the loss of volleyball, wrestling and track and field championships in the spring cost the organization $440,000, and estimates the loss of golf, baseball, softball, cross country and girls basketball in the fall, along with the presumed loss of winter sports, will cause a nearly $1.5 million deficit to the budget.

The GoFundMe page said the IESA is spending its reserves, and the association anticipates running out of money by April without help.

Officials at area schools that compete in IESA athletics are hoping the organization can find a way through the crisis.

“We believe that the mission of the IESA, as listed on their website, is noble and in line with what we want for all of our student-athletes at Putnam County,” Putnam County athletic director Chris Newsome said. “It is unfortunate that the pandemic has caused such a negative financial impact on the IESA. We feel that the framework they provide regarding student safety, equity and opportunity are all positive benefits of the IESA. We hope that they will be able to continue operating and providing these benefits for many years to come.”

“The association works hard on behalf of school districts across the state, and we have benefitted from their work on the local level,” Princeton Elementary School superintendent Tim Smith said. “It is my hope that the IESA can sustain itself during this very difficult time so that it can continue to make a positive impact for students at the elementary level across the state.”

Dave Knottnerus, Northbrook athletic director, said he hopes the IESA can get some corporate help.

“I know it is a really trying time for the IESA,” Knottnerus said.

“Missing out on all the tournament revenue is going to be hard to come back from. I hope the word gets out about the GoFundMe page. I would also hope some of the companies that the IESA promotes (Rawlings, The Cubby Hole, Royal Publishing, etc.) would be able to donate to the cause.”

IVCC will consider joining state manufacturing academy OGLESBY — Illinois Valley Community College is exploring an opportunity to enhance its manufacturing course offerings, President Jerry Corcoran said at the Dec. 10 board meeting.

Corcoran said IVCC is considering joining a consortium of community colleges representing more than a third of central Illinois’s manufacturers to pursue one of two manufacturing academies being offered by the state.

Up to $15 million is available from the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity to build the academies in central and southern Illinois.

“We’re interested in partnering with other colleges to offer students more advanced manufacturing opportunities,” Corcoran said. “If our consortium were to be selected for funding, the academy would be located at one of the colleges, and IVCC would be one of the satellites.”

Foundational credit and noncredit-bearing courses would be offered at the satellites while advanced manufacturing would be offered

online and at the academy college.

“We believe this will benefit traditional students, nontraditional students upgrading their skills and employers in need of incumbent worker training,” Corcoran said.

In other business, the board approved:

• A $12.8 million 2020 tax levy representing a 3% increase over the $12.4 million actual 2019 levy.

• The addition of a full-time administrative assistant in Continuing Education and Business Services. The department now will be responsible for handling its own student registrations, formerly processed by admissions.

• The retirement requests of instructors Dan Serafini, mathematics, and his brother, Rick, accounting, effective July 31. “It has been both an honor and a pleasure instructing mathematics and being a part of IVCC,” Dan said in his retirement letter. “IVCC has been an important part of my life beginning as a student in 1976.

BY TOM COLLINS tcollins@shawmedia.com PERU — The pastor of Peru’s Catholic parishes died from complications related to COVID-19.

The Rev. Monsignor Richard Soseman died early Wednesday at OSF St. Elizabeth Medical Center, Ottawa, where he was placed on a ventilator after contracting COVID-19 in late November. He was 57.

Soseman was ordained in 1992 and within a year was dispatched to Rome for study. He rose swiftly through the ecclesiastical ranks and was named monsignor (Chaplain of Honor to His Holiness) in 2000, before the age of 40.

Soseman would return again to the Vatican on assignment, most notably in 2004 when he was named Episcopal delegate for the Cause for Sainthood for Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen. El Paso-born Sheen was ordained in the Diocese of Peoria and is closing in on canonization, thanks in part to Soseman’s research and work.

It was widely noted among parishioners and fellow clergy that Soseman died the same day as Sheen.

“Today is the anniversary of the death of (Venerable) Fulton Sheen and I think Richard would have picked today,” his sister, Cheryl Soseman McKittrick, wrote in a social media post announcing his Wednesday passing.

Actually, Wednesday was a double feast day for Soseman. The Rev. Gary Blake is pastor of Holy Family Church in Oglesby and a longtime friend. Blake noted Wednesday is the feast of St. Juan Diego, an eyewitness to the Marian apparition at Guadalupe, and the Spanish-speaking Soseman had ministered to migrant workers from the Americas.

“He put heart and soul into the parishes where he was assigned,” Blake said. “Personally, he enjoyed having people around. He was always having dinners at the rectory for the local clergy or he’d call and ask if you wanted to come and watch a movie.”

Tributes poured in from across Starved Rock Country, while Peru parishioners expressed shock at losing their second pastor in three years. Soseman was recalled from service in the Vatican in 2017 after the sudden death of Monsignor J. Brian Rejsek.

Fred Steele recently stepped down as a trustee for the Peru Catholic Parishes after 14 years of service and said he enjoyed working with Soseman, not least because of his ease with people and sense of humor. Steele’s wife, Gina, helped choose new flooring for the altar at St. Joseph’s and passed her selection on to Soseman, who approve her choice with the missive, “Great minds think alike.”

“He was a super nice guy and very dedicated to his faith and to his flock,” Fred Steele said. “He was just a very intelligent man and I liked him a lot. He had a huge impact on people in his lifetime and will be missed by many.”

John Koehler is a trustee at Peru Catholic Parishes and said Soseman’s absence would be felt across the area. Soseman was a frequent and thoughtful guest on local radio programs and was a much-followed figure on social media. Soseman was an avid cyclist who would mount a camera phone on his handle bars and churn out spiritually themed vignettes while riding.

“He was contemplative and always seemed to be positive and supportive of anyone who went to him with issues,” Koehler said. “He had a good head on his shoulders, too. I’ll miss the guy.”

Soseman had a formidable intellect, and one of his clerical assistants said he returned “very knowledgeable” from his years in Rome.

Deacon Dan O’Connor said Soseman was noted for his thoughtful reflections in the parish bulletin.

“He was a very spiritual man and very reverent at the altar,” O’Connor said. “He was there for the people.”

Chief Senachwine DAR chapter holds December Zoom meeting

HENRY — Substituting the Chief Senachwine DAR chapter’s usual Christmas potluck with a Zoom meeting, members met virtually on Dec. 4 for their regular end-of-the-year meeting.

Chaplain Diana Williamson extended sympathies on behalf of the chapter for the loss of Richard (Moby) Finfgeld, husband of member Florence Finfgeld.

The winning essays of the Good Citizens students selected by Henry-Senachwine High School, Midland High School and Putnam County High School have been advanced to the DAR District level for advanced judging.

The collection of calendars for nursing homes is ongoing. Members from the Henry area are asked to drop off calendars at the home of Diane Zimmerman. Members in other areas may donate their collected calendars at a nursing home of their choice.

Six members attended the virtual DAR Day on Nov. 7, a time of sharing the latest DAR information with members throughout Illinois.

Additional business was conducted: monetary donation to the LaSalle Veterans Home, election of a Nominating Committee, election of delegates to the state conference in April 2021 and election of a delegate to Continental Congress in June 2021.

Continuing the chapter’s December tradition of sharing stories about favorite items, members displayed and related memories of favorite Christmas items and treasured antiques.

The program for the meeting was a Christmas scavenger hunt. Members were to collect 15 of 30 listed items, and as names of items were drawn from a hat, the first participant to reach 15 was the winner. The first-place prize winner was Jean Watkins with Sharon Bittner and Diana Williamson winning second and third place prizes.

The next meeting will be Friday, Feb. 5. Since February is National Heart Month, members are asked to wear red. The program, “Women’s Heart Health,” will be given by member Carol Byrd. Information will be forthcoming on a meeting location or a Zoom meeting.

Cranberry white chocolate mousse cheesecake takes Christmas to another level

Festive and decadent, this dessert will be the highlight of your holiday dinner table

the springform pan in heavy duty aluminum foil from bottom up to the sides. (I recommend wrapping the outside of the springform in foil before adding the crust and cheesecake batter.)

Crust:

Mix the graham cracker crumbs, sugar, melted butter and vanilla. Stir very well, until all incorporated. Press graham cracker mixture into the pan, evenly, all over the bottom and about half way up the side.

Spread half of the cranberry jam over the crust.

I have for you this month, what may be my crowing baking achievement, a cranberry white chocolate mousse cheesecake worthy of a magazine cover — and I promise that everyone from novice to expert can pull this together.

Layers of homemade cranberry jam, vanilla cheesecake, decadent white chocolate mousse and a crown of candied cranberries this sweet-tart masterpiece one that you’ll want to make a new tradition.

Don’t let the recipe intimidate you. The ingredient list is extensive, and it’s not a quick prep but the steps are simple and easy to follow even if you’ve never attempted a cheesecake.

A word of advice, read the recipe through several times before getting started. This rule always applies to baking, but you especially want to have a thorough understanding of the steps in order for the preparation to go smoothly. Also, make sure to allow your dairy to come to room temperature.

Failure to do so will keep the cream cheese from blending smoothly with the other ingredients.

Both of my kids, who normally are my taste testers, apparently don’t like white chocolate or cheesecake or cranberries in things, so they and their terrible opinions were excluded from this trial. Instead, I shared with a few of my girlfriends to get their thoughts on the recipe.

The concensus? The cheesecake istself is amazing (but the candied cranberries get a mixed reaction, with some of us opining that they’re better as a decorative accent so make sure you like them before you commit.) Four out of four recommend.

Ingredients Cranberry Jam 16 ounces fresh cranberries 1 cup white granulated sugar 1/2 tablespoon vanilla extract

Crust

1 1/2 cups graham cracker crumbs 1/4 cup brown sugar 5 tablespoons butter, melted 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Cheesecake Filling

24 ounces cream cheese, softened 3/4 cup heavy whipping cream 2 tablespoons sour cream 2 eggs

Homemade cranberry jam layered with decadent mousse and sparkling sugared cranberries will be the highlight of the holiday table.

1 teaspoon vanilla extract 2 tablespoons corn starch 1/2 cup white granulated sugar 1 vanilla bean

White Chocolate Mousse

8 ounces baking white chocolate bars (2 4-ounce bars) 8 ounces cream cheese,softened 8 ounces whipped topping, like Cool Whip Candied Cranberries (optional) 8 ounces fresh cranberries 1 1/2 cups water 1 1/2 cups sugar 1/2 cup sugar or super fine sugar

Instructions Candied Cranberries (overnight): Combine water and 1 1/2 cups of sugar in a sauce pot, over medium heat. Heat the mixture until sugar is all dissolved, while stirring slowly.

Take off heat.

Let the mixture cool a bit before adding cranberries. Add cranberries, stir, cover and refrigerate overnight.

Drain cranberries in a colander.

Add 1/2 cup of sugar to a shallow bowl and coat cranberries is sugar. Set aside until ready to decorate.

Quick Cranberry Jam:

In a sauce pot, over medium heat, combine cranberries, sugar and vanilla extract. Mix well cook cranberries stirring often. Cook for 12-15 minutes.

Take off heat and let it cool completely.

Preheat the oven to 325 degrees and grease a 9-inch springform pan. You will need a large roasting pan that’s bigger and longer than the springform pan. (I use the aluminum foil disposable ones). If you are not sure about your springform holding up in water, you can wrap the outside of

Start beating cream cheese and sugar on medium-high speed until smooth, about 2 minutes.

Add vanilla extract, and sour cream. Mix until combined.

Add eggs, one at the time, beating after each addition. Scrape sides and bottom of the bowl and beat until all incorporated.

Lower speed and add corn starch. While on medium-low speed, pour in heavy cream. Mix until all combined, scrape the sides and bottom of the bowl and mix again until smooth.

Cut vanilla bean lengthwise and scrape out the seeds into the cheesecake batter. Mix well until incorporated throughout.

Spoon all of the cheesecake batter into the springform, over the jam.

Place roasting pan into the oven and place the cheesecake springform pan inside the roasting pan. Carefully add water to the roasting pan, about half way up the side of the springform.

Bake for 70-75 minutes. Turn off the oven and open the oven door half way. Let cheesecake rest for about 10 minutes and take it out of the oven (out of the roasting pan and carefully take off the foil).

Let it rest for 20 minutes on the counter and then gently run a greased butter knife between sides of the cheesecakes and the springform to carefully separate it. (You don’t actually have to take the cheesecake out of the pan until ready to add topping.)

Cool cheesecake for an hour.

Spread remaining cranberry jam over the top of the cheesecake. Cover the pan with saran wrap and place the cheesecake in the refrigerator.

Refrigerate for at least 4 hours before adding the mousse.

White Chocolate Mousse:

Break up white chocolate bars and melt them according the to package instructions.

Beat cream cheese with an electric mixer for a couple of minutes.

Drizzle in melted white chocolate while continuing to beat cream cheese. Mix well.

Fold in whipped topping gently until all combined.

Spread white chocolate mousse over the top of the cheesecake. You can separate the mousse in two batches and use one batch to decorate with a frosting tip.

If using candied cranberries, spread them on top of the white chocolate mousse.

HELP WITH BASIC PHONE SERVICE McNabb Telephone Company is pleased to offer the LINK UP and LIFELINE programs.

LINK UP is a program that helps pay the installation charge for telephone service.

This Illinois program will assist qualified low-income consumers by paying up to $35.00 of the cost of installing local service in their principal residence.

LIFELINE is a program established to help pay the monthly charge for local telephone service. This federally funded program is available to qualified low-income consumers.

If the qualifying low-income consumer voluntarily elects toll blocking while initiating LIFELINE service a deposit is not required.

WHO IS ELIGIBLE FOR THESE PROGRAMS? To be eligible for the program you must be a recipient of one of the following: a. Medicaid b. Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program c. Supplemental Security Income (SSI) d. Federal Housing Assistance (Section 8) e. Veteran's Pension and Survivor Benefit f.
