Sales have been ‘brisk’ at area Christmas tree businesses

‘I think everybody just wants to get out and do something positive’

BY KEVIN CHLUM kchlum@shawmedia.com Whenever customers arrive at Larson Family Farm in Sandwich, Rhonda Larson asks them if they’d been there before.

“If they have, I don’t have to talk as much,” Larson joked. “But if they say no, then I have to tell them how to get down to the trees, how to get back, where to put their tree, park here.

I’ve had a lot of people who said it was their first time, or they’ve cut trees before but not here.”

Larson said she’s been getting customers from Chicago and the suburbs.

“What I have noticed ... talking to people is they seem to be coming from farther away,” Larson said. “I think there people are wanting to get out with their families because they feel it’s safer.”

Larson said her farm sold as many trees opening day last year as it did in 2019, and she’s predicting this year could be among their best, joining 2016 and 2017 when there was good weather combined with a local competitor closed because of a lack of inventory.

The farm sold all of the wreaths Steve Larson made for opening weekend on the first day.

“I honestly believe when we get to the end of our season, things may be better this year than back in 2016 or 2017 because we have had a lot of new people come,” Larson said.

Sales have been strong at Christmas tree businesses across the area.

Ronnie Baudino from B&B Christmas Trees in Ottawa said sales are ahead of last year after opening weekend.

“Right now, sales are very brisk,” Baudino said. “We had a fantastic weekend last weekend. I think everybody just wants to get out and do something positive.

“We’ve been in business over 30 years, and we have a pretty good customer base. We’re seeing people earlier this year than in the past. A lot of people we normally wouldn’t see until this weekend or the following weekend have already been here to pick trees up.”

Holocker Tree Farm in McNabb posted on its Facebook page that Nov. 27 was “definitely our busiest opening day to date.” The farm closed its fields to customers cutting down their own trees but will sell pre-cut trees until Friday before closing for the season.

“Due to an overwhelming number of people on opening weekend, the fields are officially closed for the sea-

son,” Holocker Tree Farm posted on Facebook.

With customers coming early this season, Baudino feels sales could slow down in the coming weeks.

“In a town our size, we’re only going to sell so many trees whether we sell them this week or next week,” Baudino said. “I think it will average out over the season.

“I think sales are going to be up overall for the year, but how much is hard to say. We’ll know more in a couple weeks.”

Baudino said B&B will stay open until it runs out of trees, and while he has access to more trees at this time, he hesitates to get more.

“We can still purchase trees for another week or so, but [our suppliers] only cut so many trees,” Baudino said. “The guys raising trees are out 10 to 12 years on inventory. We won’t go cut into next year’s crop, because if we do, we’ll cut into next year. We want to keep everything on an even keel from year to year.”

Larson Family Farm, meanwhile, will stay open until Dec. 19.

“This is our 30th year cutting trees,” Larson said. “We have 19 acres of trees planted. We plant about 1,500 per year. Of that lot, 500 to 600 die between the time we plant and the time we cut.

“We have plenty of trees. We never stop planting, no matter what.”

PRINCETON — When Covenant Children’s Home decided to sell its 17-acre Princeton campus, the Freedom House Board of Directors was faced with a difficult decision: Relocate, or extend its already pandemic-stressed finances to buy its headquarters building and Nelson Chapel, each provided virtually rent-free

by Covenant for many years.

Ultimately, the Board decided that the many advantages of making its longtime Princeton home permanent outweighed the financial burden. On Dec.1, Freedom House purchased 440 and 446 Elm Place with financing by Heartland Bank.

Nedda Simon, who founded Freedom House in 1983, said “Both my family and I are gratified that the agency now has its first permanent home. This has been a dream that we thought could never become a reality. But today, it has.”

“Freedom House has deep and abiding roots in Bureau County and Princeton, the symbolic center of the five-county area it serves,” said Board President Marshall Jones.

“The Board is quite pleased that it was able to come to terms with Covenant and Heartland Bank to accom-

New Board of Directors appointed to lead the combined health system

St. Margaret’s, IVCH move forward with integration planning SPRING VALLEY — St. Margaret’s Health in Spring Valley, a member of SMP Health System, and Illinois Valley Community Hospital (IVCH) in Peru received approval on their proposed affiliation from the Illinois Health Facilities and Services Review Board (IHFSRB) on Nov. 1. With this authorization from the state, St. Margaret’s and IVCH have commenced their integration planning process, which includes the creation of a new Board of Directors.

The board will provide oversight and guidance to the newly combined integrated health system that will also be known as St. Margaret’s Health. After the affiliation is complete, IVCH will be known as St. Margaret’s Health - Peru. St. Margaret’s Hospital will be known as St. Margaret’s Health - Spring Valley.

“We are honored to have such dedicated community leaders represented on the Board of Directors of St. Margaret’s Health,” said Aaron K. Alton, president & CEO SMP Health System. “Their leadership will be invaluable as our hospitals move forward together to care for communities across the Illinois Valley.”

The board members’ new terms will take effect Jan. 1, 2021. St. Margaret’s and IVCH intend to finalize their affiliation by the end of this year. Once the affiliation is complete, the combined entities will conduct a thorough assessment of facilities, the services provided and the needs of the community. It is anticipated that the full integration of the two organizations will take one to two years.

Driver services facilities to stay closed until January Princeton office to stay open for new drivers, CDL applicants Driver service facilities in Illinois will remain closed until the week of Jan. 4, according to a Friday news release issued by Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White. Sites closed statewide Nov. 17 because of a rise in COVID-19 cases.

However, the Princeton office is among a handful in the state remaining open to selectively serve new drivers and commercial driver’s license applicants.

“As the health and safety of employees and the public are paramount, we decided to extend the closure of Driver Services facilities until Jan 4, 2021, due to the continuing COVID19 pandemic,” White said in a news release. “Unfortunately, face-to-face transactions potentially increase the further spread of the virus, and protecting the health and safety of our residents is my top priority.”

White said expirations for driver’s licenses and ID cards have been extended until June 1.

Services expanded online Online services have been expanded during the office closures.

Services at cyberdriveillinois.com include: • Renewing a license plate sticker.

• Renewing a valid driver’s license for qualifying drivers.

• Renewing a valid ID card for people ages 22 to 64 (seniors 65 and older have free, nonexpiring IDs).

• Obtaining a driver record abstract.

• Filing business services documents, such as incorporations and annual reports.

Customers with issues involving administrative hearings can contact adminhearings@ilsos.gov.

In an effort to reduce future facility visits, White expanded online renewals for driver’s licenses and ID cards. Not everyone qualifies, particularly those who are required to pass a written or road test. For qualifying drivers, if the driver’s license or ID card expired between Feb. 1, 2020, and Jan. 31, 2021, the individual will receive a letter this month with a unique PIN needed to renew online.

If the driver’s license or ID card expires after Feb. 1, 2021, the individual will receive the PIN letter about 90 days before the expiration date.

Locations include facilities in Bradley, Charleston, Chicago North, Chicago South, Danville/Tilton, DeKalb, Marion, Mascoutah, Moline/Silvis, Olney, Peoria, Princeton, Quincy, Rantoul, Rockford, Salem and Springfield.

Select facilities also will be open for CDL applicants to take written and road exams. The 18 CDL facilities are in Bradley, Charleston, Dan-

ville/Tilton, DeKalb, Elk Grove Village, Marion, Mascoutah, Moline/ Silvis, Olney, Peoria, Princeton, Quincy, Rantoul, Rockford, Salem, South Holland, Springfield and West Chicago.

vide essential services by ensuring goods can be transported safely and efficiently throughout the state and country during this pandemic,” White said.

Hearing of Illinois House’s Veterans Affairs Committee scheduled Dec. 15

BY SHAW MEDIA The Illinois Veterans Home at LaSalle reported no new COVID-19 cases Saturday but stated that there was an additional COVID-19 death suffered by a veteran at the facility.

To date, 32 veterans with the disease at the Illinois Veterans Home at LaSalle have died.

A hearing of the Illinois House’s Veterans Affairs Committee has been scheduled for 10 a.m. Dec. 15 with testimony from agencies regarding the state’s COVID-19 mitigation at LaSalle Veterans Home.

Since the beginning of the outbreak, the veterans home has had

108 positive residents and 97 positive employees. To date, 37 residents and 81 staff have recovered from the virus, according to Administrator Angela Mehlbrech.

“We understand this news can be distressing,” facility administrator Angela Mehlbrech wrote Thursday, “which is why we encourage you to contact your loved ones for mutual support of one another. If your loved one has been affected by the virus, we want to offer you the opportunity to visit in person.

Please understand this is a risk to your health and safety and though we will provide all the appropriate PPE, we cannot guarantee you will not contract the virus.

“We would like to further clarify our process for ‘compassionate care visits’ as defined in the IDPH guidelines. Residents who are positive for COVID-19 run the risk of a rapid change in condition. We do not want to risk that the family can’t say

directly to their loved one and back out at the end of the visit. The visitor is not allowed anywhere else in the building. We continue to offer virtual visits and you can schedule those by calling the activity department. …

Three, including Putnam man, killed in Bureau County traffic crash

BY SHAW MEDIA Three were killed Friday evening in a fatal accident at the intersection of Route 40 and Kentville Road in Bureau County. Bureau County Sheriff James Reed said deputies responded at 6:32 p.m., and upon arrival they observed a Mitsubishi Outlander and Lexus

with severe damage.

The driver and sole occupant of the Mitsubishi, a 62-year-old man from Putnam, was deceased at the scene.

The Lexus had four occupants.

A 39-year-old male driver and 11-year-old female passenger were deceased at the scene. The other two passengers – a 39-year-old

woman and 13-year-old boy – were transported to OSF Medical Center in Peoria. All four individuals in that vehicle were from Davenport, Iowa.

Names are being withheld pending the notification of family.

The cause of the crash is still under investigation by an Illinois State Police Traffic Accident

During this time, there were no deaths reported. There have been zero COVID-19 related deaths recorded in Putnam County since the start of the pandemic. There have been 55 deaths recorded in Bureau County and six deaths in Marshall County.

Always wanting to live life to the fullest. She enjoyed skydiving and going to Six Flags. She was a big family person. Christy became a grandmother in April of 2013 and that was one of the

things that made her happiest in life.

She loved spending time with her granddaughter, Taylyn, and making all sorts of lasting memories.

Christy was always willing to help when needed and be there for all of her family and friends. She had many friends that knew that she was a great person to turn to for advice and a listening ear.

She will be missed by many.

Survivors include her husband, and her three daughters, Erika, Charlie and Cynthia, along with her beloved fur-baby.

Due to COVID-19 restrictions a private funeral service will be held at Christ Community Church in Princeton, IL, officiated by Pastor David Mundt, with a graveside service to follow at Riverside Cemetery in Hennepin, IL. A celebration of Iner’s life will be held at a later date.

He is survived by his wife, Marjorie Anderson of Princeton, IL; two children, Cindy (Scott) Smith of Princeton, IL, and Randy (Jennifer) Iner Anderson of Manhattan Beach, CA; four grandchildren (the joys of his life), Trisha Marie Smith, Taylor May Smith, Jackson Thomas Anderson and Ava Evelyn Anderson. Iner was preceded in death by his parents, Oscar and Eva Anderson, and his mother and father-in-law, Ivan and Berneda Brown of Fairbury, IL. He was born at St. Margaret’s Hospital in Spring Valley, Illinois on September 17, 1932, to the late Oscar and Eva (Nielsen) Anderson of Granville, IL. He spent his earliest years in his father’s home town of Abbekas, Sweden, and later returned to Putnam County where he graduated

from Hopkins High School where he was valedictorian to the Class of 1950.

He received his Bachelor’s Degree in 1955, and his Master’s Degree in School Administration in 1964 from Illinois State University in Normal, IL. Iner faithfully served in the U.S. Army, as a Medical Technician and Supervisor for two years as well as serving in the United States Army Reserves. After serving his country he met his wife of 55 years Marjorie Ellen (Brown) Anderson.

They married on June 13, 1965. She survives.

Iner began his passion in education as a classroom teacher and coach in Magnolia, IL. Shortly thereafter he became the Superintendent of Putnam/ Senachwine Schools in Putnam, Illinois.

He enjoyed his years there so much and made many lifelong friends. He then served for 32 years as the Regional Superintendent of Schools for Marshall, Putnam and Woodford County. He was always so grateful to all the voters who supported him and enjoyed working with all his colleagues.

After retirement he spent several years as Interim Superintendent at Ransom Grade School, Ransom, IL, and 16 years as a part-time school bus driving instructor. Throughout his many years in education he made many lifelong friends whom he enjoyed.

Iner was a member of numerous professional and civic organizations including: The National Education Association; The Association of Regional Superintendents; The State Public Transportation Advisory Committee where he served as President; Education Chairman for Marshall and Putnam County Cancer Society; Past President of the Lacon Rotary Club. He was also a member of the Putnam County Welfare Committee and a member of the 1st Lutheran Church in Granville, IL, where he served on the church council.

BY SHAW MEDIA After seven years as an assistant coach at two different area programs, Gavin Kurtz is getting his chance as a head wrestling coach.

Kurtz was hired as the head coach of the Putnam County-Hall co-op, taking over for Jerry Kreiwald.

“I’ve never been a head coach

before, so I feel like I’m progressing and furthering my coaching career,” Kurtz said. “I’m not too sure what I even have coming in as far as numbers and returning athletes, but I’m just excited to get an opportunity.”

Kurtz served as an assistant coach at St. Bede for three years then went to Seneca for two years before returning to St. Bede for the last two seasons.

“I’m going to bring a source of aggression,” Kurtz said. “My practice rooms are notoriously pretty tough. I hope that translates well to the athletes. I hope they take my style of wrestling and run with it.”

Kurtz, an Ottawa graduate, hopes to bring postseason success to the Panthers.

“For this year, if we even have a

season, it’s going to be about getting numbers and getting kids mat time and experience,” Kurtz said. “The long-term goal is always going to be a regional championship. That’s the No. 1 thing I can think of wanting to achieve as a coach. I’d like to get one in the first five years. It’d be great to get a kid on the medal stand in Champaign.”

IVCC partners with universities to expand opportunities for ag students SHAW MEDIA

Illinois Valley Community College announced agriculture transfer agreements with Illinois State University and Southern Illinois University.

With these agreements, IVCC students can pursue and complete an Associate of Applied Science degree in agronomy or agricultural business management, then transfer to ISU or SIU to com-

plete a bachelor’s degree in agriculture.

IVCC agriculture program co-coordinators Willard Mott and Kathryn Seebruck said they are excited about the impact the agreements will have on IVCC students.

“These agreements mean students pursuing traditional, nontransfer career degrees can now seamlessly transfer and finish a bachelor’s degree in agriculture at a major university,” Mott said.

“These agreements provide more versatility

for students who may be undecided on whether they want to transfer after two years at IVCC,” Seebruck said.

Former IVCC students holding an AAS in agriculture also are eligible to pursue a bachelor’s degree with ISU or SIU under the terms of the new agreement.

Petition filing for Illinois Valley Community College board begins Dec. 14

Terms are ending for two members of the Illinois Valley Community College board of trustees, and the seats will be on the ballot for the April 6 election.

The one-week period for interested candidates to file nomination petitions for the seats will open Dec. 14 and run through Dec. 21.

Petitions will be accepted 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Monday through Friday, with extended hours of 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Dec. 21, in the president’s office, room C301. The president’s office will be open Dec. 21 despite all other college offices are closed.

Wally’s wild ride leads to legal questions, health updates, T-shirts

In the 24 hours after his chase through the streets of Peru, Wally the Wallaroo has become a social media phenomenon and has been highlighted on countless media outlets throughout the country.

Wally and his owner, Nathan Drewel, captivated much of the Illinois Valley on the afternoon of Dec. 2, as all were happy to see that no one was injured during the wild ride.

Wally’s afternoon sparked many questions from the community, from the legality of owning exotic animals in Illinois to what even is a wallaroo.

While the latter can be answered with a quick Google search — a species of macropods between the size of a kangaroo and a wallaby — the legal question has proven to be more complex.

In Peru Police Chief Doug Bernabei’s initial statement given hours after Wally’s arrival at Bridgeview Veterinary Hospital in Peru, he said he believed the animal was lawfully

owned and possessed by state permit.

Thursday morning, Bernabei said the PD still is going through an investigation, but they now believe Wally was owned without a proper permit, and the city and an agricultural agency will work with his owner to find a new and suitable home.

Wally himself was able to return home Wednesday evening after receiving treatment to help bring his temperature up to normal and check for further injury.

Dr. Allison Spayer said in the short time Wally was at Bridgeview, they saw his condition and movement improve.

“He looked actually really good,” Spayer said. “He was standing, and he was able to hop around. He was hopping down by surgery, so we actually let him move around for like an hour or so to make sure he had his bearings and wasn’t limping.”

Spayer said Wally was sent home with instructions to continue monitoring him and look for any signs of pain or discomfort from Wednes-

day’s journey around town.

Spayer also mentioned she had a phone call with the owner a few hours after Wally returned home.

Drewel said Wally was almost acting back to normal.

He was reportedly hopping around the house, eating Wheat Thins and seemed to be recovering from the chase very positively.

On top of the social media craze that occurred, a Tonica T-shirt business saw an opportunity to use Wednesday’s events to raise money for a great cause.

Savvy Tees and Apparel, located at 11 Bailey Creek Drive in Tonica, announced on its Facebook page Wednesday evening it would offer “Free Wally” T-shirts in response to the event.

The business also said its intent to donate all proceeds from the shirt and sweatshirt to the Cops 4 Cancer charity.

Savvy Tees and Apparel owner Mark Coons said the idea came from a friend of his joking about the ongoing event asking, “Where is the T-shirt?” Coons’ friend commented and tagged him in a video on Wally

“I thought it’d be funny to kind of throw something together real quick, and I commented back at her,” Koons said. “I thought, ‘I wonder if I could sell these and donate the money to Cops 4 Cancer?’”

Coons said the idea took off on social media, as in the beginning he didn’t believe the shirt would gather a lot of buzz.

As of Thursday afternoon, Coons has sold around 50 shirts that will make for roughly a $500 donation.

The shirt still is available to buy until Dec. 6, as Coons hopes to be able to present a $1,000 donation to the charitable organization.

As for the future of Wally the Peru Wallaroo, only time will tell ... but everyone will remember where he or she was when Wally went on his wild ride.

People in the know seek out Annie’s Hide-away My family always has recommended Annie’s Hideaway in Naplate to me, and while I’d always intended to try it, I just hadn’t gotten around to it.

That was the case until recently, when I finally gave it a try.

I’ll definitely be back.

Annie’s truly is hidden away; it’s located two blocks off the main drag within the neighborhoods of Naplate.

There’s a neon sign glowing “Annie’s” to help direct you there.

Though family-style fried chicken was tempting, since the restaurant boasts it has the best fried chicken around, my dinner companion and I decided to order chicken Oscar, chicken Parmesan and an appetizer of macaroni and cheese bites.

The chicken Parmesan ($18.95) featured a sizable breaded chicken breast coated with mozzarella cheese, nestled on top of a heaping bed of spaghetti. The chicken itself was juicy and tasty, and the breading was a light batter that crumbled into the spaghetti, providing wonderful batter-accented bites to the pasta. The spaghetti sauce had a pleasant, fresh taste with an herbal profile that took me by surprise, but was really good.

My companion’s chicken Oscar ($20.95) featured another juicy chicken breast beneath a hollandaise sauce mixed with crab meat and asparagus. It was served over a bed of rice, giving it a savory flavor boost. The taste was rich, but not overbearing.

Both of our dinners were served with a choice of soup or salad.

We opted for the soup of the day, creamy potato. We loved the bacon bits and potato chunks. The soup also comes with homemade bread for dipping.

Finding an appetizer was difficult, because there are 26 different items to choose from. We debated getting the cheese squares, poppers or

They were the perfect combination of deep-fried batter and cheese.

Part of the charm of Annie’s is eating in the intimate dining room and bellying up to the bar for a drink before or after.

Because of the COVID pandemic, however, Annie’s dining room was closed, so they brought food to the car curbside. The process was very easy. The staff asked what type of car I drive when I made the carryout order, and delivered my food as soon as I pulled up to the designat-

ed parking spot.

I see now why my family loves Annie’s so much. Each dish had a homemade quality.

There are several items, such as the ravs in chicken broth, the fried chicken, the seafood and the baked mostaccioli that I want to try.

MORRIS — On Nov. 30, state Sen. Sue Rezin (R-Morris) brought together dozens of high school students from across the 38th Senate District to participate in her annual Youth Advisory Council, a unique opportunity for area students to learn about state government and public policy.

“This is the fourth year that I have hosted a Youth Advisory Council for area high school students. With the ongoing pandemic, we had to do it a little differently this year,” said Sen. Rezin. “This yearly event is one of my favorite experiences, so I am very pleased

As part of the event, Sen. Rezin invited guest speakers to talk with the students, including Cody Grandadam, owner and president of Promier Products, and Amanda Vinicky, correspondent and segment host with WTTW. Sen. Rezin also spoke about her experience as a state legislator.

“My favorite speaker was Amanda Vinicky,” said Drew Kalsto from LaSalle-Peru Township High School. “I loved her honesty and

integrity for giving the public the real information and addressing the concerns that we have had with the media in the past four years. It was very interesting to hear her perspective.”

In the past, the fall discussion would be the basis for the spring meeting where Sen. Rezin would bring the students to the Statehouse in Springfield. At the Statehouse, the students would continue their discussion about the legislative process, tour the Capitol and give the students the opportunity to witness state government in action.
