Illinois Policy Institute releases labor report

On Nov. 20 the federal Bureau of Labor Statistics released the economic and unemployment statistics for the states. The Illinois Policy Institute, a nonpartisan research and education organization, has headlined its’ press release to say the report shows Illinois is beginning to keep pace with neighbor state job growth. However, a closer look at the numbers show the state is still far behind the rest of the Mid-

west, and its’ economic condition is far from favorable.

The figures which are being shown as a positive sign are from October, when Illinois added 14,100 payroll jobs on net, which brings the total job growth for 2015 to 20,200 new jobs.

According to the release, Illinois’ manufacturing district, which is an important indicator of the economic health of the middle class, lost 1,900 jobs in October and 14,100 in 2015. Illinois has the worst loss of manufacturing jobs in the region for October

and the year overall.

“Although it’s only one month, this is a positive sign for the state that has had the slowest recovery from the Great Recession in the country. However, Illinois’ manufacturing and blue-collar industries are continuing to fall dangerously behind its neighbors.

Illinois’ inability to keep manufacturers in our state is devastating areas around Illinois where families rely on these blue-collar jobs to survive. It is always a positive sign to see job growth in the state, but Illinois lawmakers should be looking at what policies can improve jobs across the economic spectrum, not

So far, 2015 has been a good year for deer hunters in Illinois. According to an Illinois Department of Natural Resources report released on Nov. 24, hunters took a preliminary total of 57,968 deer during the opening weekend of the state’s firearm deer season on Nov. 20-22. During the same period in 2014, hunters took 51,830 deer or 6,138 less than this year.

Hunters in Bureau County successfully downed 714 deer, 38 more than the 2014 opening weekend total of 676.

Putnam County hunters bagged 12 more deer this year than last with an opening weekend total of 252.

In LaSalle County, 547 deer were dropped, seven more than the 2014 opening weekend total of 540.

Mautino reminds seniors to review Medicare coverage SPRING VALLEY — In effort to remind older residents about the approaching deadline to change Medicare plans, state Rep. Frank Mautino is encouraging residents who feel their Medicare coverage is not meeting their needs to review their options by Monday, Dec. 7, and make desired changes.

The manufacturing job growth report for the region shows Indiana has gained 10,900 manufacturing jobs so far this year; Michigan has gained 17,100; Ohio has gained 13,500 and Wisconsin has gained 3,700. By comparison, Illinois has lost 14,100 manufacturing jobs so far this year.

“I encourage seniors living on a fixed income to compare plans to see if they can save money by making changes to their plan,” Mautino said.

The state’s unemployment rate remained at 5.4 percent for October. Illinois has lost manufacturing jobs during every month but one in 2015 and is the state in the Midwest which has lost the most manufacturing jobs in 2015.

Illinois has 67,000 fewer jobs than it did before the recession began in 2008. According to the report, Illinois is home to the worst economic recovery of any state in the country.

Kinzinger seeks re-election OTTAWA — Congressman Adam Kinzinger (R-Channahon) announced he has filed his primary petitions with nearly double the signatures required to run for re-election in the 16th District of Illinois.

USDA Rural Development funding assists Illinois producers Funding supports solar and energy efficiency projects to create jobs and promote energy independence CHAMPAIGN – Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack has announced that USDA is awarding loans and grants that will help more than 1,100 rural small businesses and agricultural producers reduce energy usage and costs in their operations.

The funding is for energy efficiency improvements and/or renewable energy systems. In Illinois, 42 producers and small businesses are recipients of this funding which totals $1,566,148.

The projects are being financed through USDA Rural Development’s Rural Energy for America Program (REAP).

“Rural business owners, including agricultural producers, are blending these energy saving measures into their operations to help reduce their carbon footprint and cut operational costs,” said Colleen Callahan, USDA Rural Development Director for Illinois.

“The Rural Energy for America Program helps

fund these projects that are mutually beneficial for the environment and the business’s bottom line,” she continued.

Among the Illinois projects funded: • Four County Renewable Energy LLC in Elizabeth has been approved for an $89,125 grant to install a 126.5kW solar photovoltaic system, which will result in the generation of 176,600 kWh. The proposed system is projected to generate enough energy to power 16 homes.

• A Winnebago County producer has been approved for a $33,511 grant to replace a diesel irrigation system with an electric powered pump that is estimated to reduce energy by 76 percent.

• A Coles County producer will use a $40,413 grant to help finance the installation of a 51kW solar photovoltaic system, which will result in 100 percent energy replacement annually. A Wabash County producer has been approved for a

$30,522 grant to upgrade an existing grain drying system that is estimated to reduce energy by 35 percent.

Funding of each award is contingent upon the recipient meeting the terms of the grant agreement.

Applications are currently being accepted for future REAP funding.

Congress created the Rural Energy for America Program in the 2002 Farm Bill. Because of the success of the program, Congress reauthorized REAP in the 2014 Farm Bill with guaranteed funding of at least $50 million annually for the duration of the fiveyear bill. The 2014 Farm Bill builds on historic economic gains in rural America over the past seven years while achieving meaningful reform and billions of dollars in savings for taxpayers.

Illinois’ mass exodus: New IRS data shows the state lost one resident and $50,000 in taxable income every 6.5 minutes in 2013 Illinois outmigration sets a new record: IRS reports that in 2013, Illinois lost more than 81,000 taxpayers to other states – and they took with them $4.1 billion in taxable income CHICAGO – The rate at which people are leaving the state of Illinois has reached an all-time high, according to an Illinois Policy Institute analysis of new data from the IRS. During 2013, one resident and $50,000 in annual, taxable income moved out of Illinois every 6.5 minutes.

These figures are on net, and are calculated after taking into account all people who moved into the state.

During 2013, Illinois lost more than 81,000 residents and $4.1 billion in annual, taxable income – making 2013 the worst year for outmigration in Illinois history, according to the IRS data. Economics experts at the Illinois Policy Institute, who have been tracking state-to-state migration patterns for the past five years, say the IRS data shows why resistance to reform and a renewed push for higher income taxes is so dangerous to the vitality of the state.

“The new IRS data shows people fleeing the state faster than ever before.

People are voting with their feet against Illinois’

legacy of high taxes and poor jobs climate,” said Michael Lucci, vice president of policy at the nonpartisan Illinois Policy Institute. “High property taxes means people are struggling to stay in their homes. Many can’t find jobs because of the state’s poor economy. What’s the result? Residents are looking to other states and seeing greener pastures.

This is a clarion call for lawmakers: The way things have operated in Illinois is forcing people to cross the border. It’s not working. We need a dramatic change. It is extremely clear that Illinois needs to change course and enact major economic reforms.”

Here are some key findings from the Illinois Policy Institute’s analysis of the new IRS data: Outmigration from Illinois has been evident since the IRS started tracking this information in 1990, but it accelerated dramatically after the state raised income taxes in 2011.

• In 2011, Illinois lost 49,728 taxpayers plus dependents and $2.5 billion in taxable income, on net, to other states.

• In 2012, Illinois lost 66,922 taxpayers plus dependents and $3.8 billion in taxable income, on net, to other states.

• In 2013, Illinois lost 81,117 taxpayers plus dependents and $4.1 billion in taxable income, on net, to other states.

Illinois lost residents on a net basis to 45 of the 50 states, including every neighboring state and every other state in the Midwest.

Texas had the biggest net gain of Illinoisans; the IRS reported that Illinois lost 14,739 people on net to Texas in 2013.

Illinois suffered a net loss of 6,575 Illinoisans to Indiana in 2013.

Illinois suffered a net loss of 4,757 Illinoisans to Wisconsin in 2013.

BBB says beware of dangers of online shopping ROCKFORD — The Christmas shopping season is now in full swing, and scammers are geared-up as well.

While the majority of shoppers will still be hitting brick and mortar retailers; a sizable portion, nearly 30 percent according to some surveys, will do their shopping on line. The Better Business Bureau is warning consumers to look for the tell-tail signs of scams.

“A recent study done by AARP shows that 70 percent of consumers failed a quiz about holiday scams,” said Dennis Horton, director of the Rockford Regional Office of the Better Business Bureau. “That study also showed that online shopping was at the top of the list of scams.”

“Shopping online is convenient but it comes with some risks consumers need to take into consideration,” stated Horton.

Horton added, “As an example shoppers worry about retailers losing their credit card information in a data breach. But a bigger concern should be about hackers using retail tools to fool them.”

Scammers have a number of schemes they use to trick buyers into giving up credit card and personal information: • Online coupons — These are often too-good-to-be true.

How it works: The scammers use fake websites that lure their potential victims with coupons for popular items such as a new electronic devices or the hot toy of the season. The websites will require the buyer to provide personal and credit card information as well as their address. With that information they can go on a buying spree of their own. Racking up hundreds of dol-

lars in purchases charged to you.

How to protect yourself: Look for red flags, such as misspellings and multiple pop-up windows. Use only retailers you know and check out the business at www. bbb.org.

• Malicious links — Using fake emails.

How it works: Because many legitimate retailers send deals directly to your inbox, scammers will send fake emails also promising incredible deals and savings.

The emails will ask you to click on a link or open an attachment that could load tracking software onto your computer allowing the scammers to search for and find personal and credit card information.

How to protect yourself: Never click on a link in an email from someone you do not know. Check with the retailer directly. Delete all suspicious emails.

• Gift cards — More for your money deals How it works: You may get an email or a text that offers a $50 dollar gift card for half price, or an offer that states you have won a $100 gift card. If you have to provide credit card information immediately to redeem … it’s a scam.

How to protect yourself: Look for information about the deal on the stores website. If the email is from a person, contact them directly. A real gift card will have a code that you put in at the end of check to claim the money. It will not ask that you for personal information, to download an attachment or take you to a third party site.

Mark graduated from Putnam County High School and had been employed by J&L, LTV and Mital Steel plant in Hennepin Mark Zorzi as a crane operator.

He was a member of United Steel Workers of America.

He married Kathy Kostellic (Siemers), and surviving is their daughter, Alexis (Gary R.) Boggio, and his grandchildren, Bella and Landon Boggio of Hennepin.

Also surviving is his brother, Doug (Joy) Zorzi of Orlando, Fla., and his sister, Janet (Norm) Raffety of Hennepin.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one son, Gabe, in 2002.

Cremation rites have been accorded. A “Celebration of Life” will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Dec. 4, at the Dysart-Cofoid Funeral Chapel in Granville.

Shirley Addis HENNEPIN — Shirley T. Addis, 88, formerly of Hennepin, died Friday, Nov. 27, 2015, at Heartland Healthcare in Henry.

Shirley was born Sept. 16, 1927, in Canonsburg, Pa., to James and Ada (Jones) Champ. She married William Addis on Nov. 8, 1946, in Canonsburg, Pa. After graduating high school, she attended School of Design in Pittsburgh, Pa. She was a member of the Order of Eastern Star of the Grand Chapter in Pennsylvania and she was also a volunteer for “Meals On Wheels”.

Shirley is survived by two daughters, Cheryl (Mike) Pezzelle of Phoenix, Ariz., and Elizabeth (John) Ciucci of Hennepin; one granddaughter-in-law, Mandy Ciucci; four grandchildren, Mike (Megan) Pezzelle, Mark (Stephanie) Pezzelle, Matt (Renee) Pezzelle and Keith (Stephanie) Ciucci; and 12 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, William, in 2012; a grandson, Eric Ciucci, in 2014; and one brother and three sisters.

Cremation rites have been accorded and there will be a private service at a later date.

Santa expands racket into November First, let me proclaim I’m not anti-Christmas. I’m not a Grinch or a Scrooge, and I don’t think I’ve ever said “Bah, humbug!”... No, I can’t recall having ever said that. I kind of like it though; maybe I’ll start.

While not anti-Christmas, I’m not pro-Christmas either. I appreciate the tradition and sentiments at the core of the holidays, but they’ve been brushed aside in a rush of commercialism.

Dave Each year, and I think most agree Cook they’ve noticed the trend, the pressure COMMENTARY of the yuletide season seems to begin earlier than the year before. This year I noticed the first Christmas items on display the day after Labor Day. That’s 109 days. Three months and 18 days of intensifying holiday cheer. No wonder people get burned out and are happy when it’s over. You can read more articles and hear more people talking about the unpleasantness of it all rather than any joy it brings.

Before I forget, I sympathize with retail employees who are forced day after agonizing day to listen to the same dozen Christmas songs repeated endlessly over their store’s speakers. I dislike it as a customer I can only imagine the mental state of the employees by the time the New Year arrives.

Thanksgiving, a day during which we’re supposed to give thanks for all we have in life, has been turned into a day where we see the worst of consumers. A family dinner isn’t nearly as valuable to the stock market as frenzied shopping. There are a few nice mentions of food drives and free dinners, and of course many will gather with their families, but the main focus has now become about how much money is saved and how much is spent. Hurry up and finish eating, so we can go stand in a crowd outside a store and save 25 percent. It’s about what must be bought to make everyone happy and who is offering free shipping. People go into debt chasing their version of a perfect holiday fantasy. The more you buy, the happier you and your family will be. Christmas has become a bill due by Dec. 25.

Cities are beginning their Christmas promotions and lighting their trees well before Thanksgiving.

You can buy real trees in mid-November. We can no longer wait for Black Friday. It used to be about family, pilgrims and turkey, but Santa openly walks the November streets and he and his gang have muscled Tom Turkey into the background. November is Santa’s month now.

I enjoy the holiday atmosphere, just not so early.

People seem genuinely more cheerful as Christmas gets close, and that’s nice. I even like Christmas music in small doses. I have a nice collection of old holiday records — Bing, Dean, Elvis, Johnny, Gene and even The Chipmunks are all waiting to provide me with the classic, cheerful melodies of holidays past if the mood strikes me.

I don’t decorate for Christmas and haven’t for years. There’s no appeal in decorating for a month and then having to take it down and store it for the remaining 11. There’s more than enough work around the house as it is. I used to decorate, but after moving here, I found myself sharing a home with a rambunctious pair of very large dogs and more specifically, one wild card of a small dog. A tree would’ve never remained intact until the end of December.

But, as the dogs settled and with kids grown, I realized I wasn’t concerned with decorations. I can get my fill of holiday cheer every time I venture out and then peacefully return to my tinsel-free sanctuary.

I do struggle with gift giving though. It’s not that I don’t appreciate the feeling of giving a nice gift to someone I care about. I also, like everyone else, enjoy being on the receiving end of a good gift; but where does it stop? Think about how quickly it adds up, not just financially, but even time-wise if you’re admirably making your gifts ... and even that comes with costs. It’s a game that’s expensive to play.

Family, friends, co-workers and acquaintances, that’s a large group. I’d love to give them all thoughtful gifts. Even if you follow thrifty recommendations and only allot $10 a gift, you’ll soon find yourself trying to find hundreds of extra dollars in your budget.

My granddaughter, Krista Jeanne Pearl Kimme, works for the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

She is associate director of development at College of Applied Health Sciences. I asked Krista to give my program for the Putnam County Rotary. I wanted her to tell about the new Chez Family Foundation Center for Wounded Veterans in Higher Education, which was ready to open for wounded veterans.

Krista started off by saying she wanted to tell what the University of Illinois is doing for the wounded veterans at their campus. They have a remarkable program that has never been done anywhere in our nation. Illinois is rated as the most disability-friendly university in the United States. It has in-state tuition for qualified veterans using the post 9-11 GI bill. There is a fulltime Department of Veterans Affairs representative on campus. There is a thriving veterans community and an active Student Veterans of America chapter, adaptive sports and a designated paralympic training site, as well as a successful program for job placement after graduation.

The Chez Foundation will be a source of transformative educational innovations, research breakthroughs, best practice models and product developments that support health and full participation in society. The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign recognizes the selfless service and vast contributions that veterans bring to our campus.

With a land grant and military history and distinction of providing pioneering services to students with disabilities, the College of Applied Health Sciences has established a center for wounded and injured veterans that will support veterans with a wide range of disabilities as they pursue an academic program and prepare for their transition into meaningful careers.

When we help a veteran to heal, we help his or her family heal, and from there, the country.

Krista then told of a wonderful man, Ken Newsome, a World War II veteran. He noticed the veterans trying to get around to attend classes had a tough time. So he decided to build ramps, and drive a bus that he put a ramp system in. So the first handicapped bus started in Champaign-Urbana. The first handicap sports started at U of I. The director, Rick Osborne, is a veteran and has worked for the Veterans Affair Administration on campus for five years. These veterans have experienced things that other people will never experience in their life. They come to campus and do not know what to expect.

They are going from military to college. One veteran said, “I go into the classroom and I am surrounded by 18-year-old children.”

They have had a different experience before going to college than the traditional student. The veterans are prepared for college by the university. They are helped on how to study and how to retain information.

They are taught how to navigate the university.

The second floor has a research center, health program, physical therapist and speech therapist. All residential rooms have laundry rooms and private bathrooms.

There are 13 residential rooms. The building cost $14 million, all from private donations, individual companies, and the Chez family donat-

ed $6 million.

Krista said she feels fortunate to work for a college that wants to help wounded veterans. Please thank a veteran when you see one.

The dedication for the Chez Family Foundation Center for Wounded Veterans was held Oct. 2, 2015, at the center in Urbana. My daughter, Debbie, her husband, Dennis Kimme, and their daughter, Krista, invited me to the dedication because they had donated a room in the center called the PFC Danny Kimme Research Office in honor of Dennis’ nephew, Danny Kimme, who was killed during Operation Hood Harvest in Iraq.

When we visited the room, we met Doug Kimme, Danny’s father, and Purple Heart Iraq veteran Sergeant Garrett Anderson, who will work in Danny’s research office. Garrett told us he had met Danny while serving in Iraq. It was not planned that he would work in the room that the family donated on the second floor. It was a pleasure to meet this wounded soldier, his wife, Sami, and their two daughters.

U of I must halt further missteps The University of Illinois has enough financial trouble on its hands without reeling from self-inflicted wounds. Principle and character in the athletic department must be restored.

One need not be a University of Illinois student or alum to be concerned about the state of affairs at our state’s flagship university. The U of I – the state’s largest university – is vital to the state’s rural economy, of which Bureau County is a part. It imparts knowledge through its 17 colleges that drives acrossthe-board advancement in rural and urban areas alike.

The University of Illinois Extension system serves farmers and people in small cities and towns with research-based, unbiased information on a wide range of subjects.

The U of I is a leader in innumerable areas, so when troubles at the university’s athletic department threatened its prestige and effectiveness, action had to be taken.

Gone are football coach Tim When I’ve tried to spread it out over several months, it’s still difficult.

I often see things which I know certain people would enjoy and wish I could buy them, but if I’m in a store it means I’m there for a reason, it’s usually more of a pressing matter to get what I need, so I typically stick to the budget ... but I am thinking of you.

For a few years, back when I used to travel from home to home for a living, I’d give my long-time cus-

In it, according to The Associated Press, independent investigators “found that Beckman pressured players to play hurt, sometimes profanely questioning their toughness in front of other players, and interfered in medical decisions.”

That’s certainly not good for the public perception of this top-shelf university.

The chaos hasn’t been limited to athletics. Former Chancellor Phyllis Wise resigned earlier this year after a hubbub about her emails, leaving the decisions to clean up the athletic department to her successor, interim Chancellor Barbara Wilson. tomers a small tin of homemade fudge. Every day, from Thanksgiving to Christmas, I’d come home and make multiple batches and prepare the tins and batches made the night before for the next day’s deliveries.

I did it all on my own, and it was fun, but it was also tiring. No one knew the scope of what I was doing, but I must have delivered hundreds of tins. I’ll never return to that production level, but I’ve been thinking of once again making a few batches

We applaud Wilson’s take-charge approach, and we encourage the university’s first-year president, Timothy Killeen, to ride herd on the process to restore principle and character to the athletic department.

That, along with continued academic excellence and, at some point, we hope, a renewed tradition of athletic success, will help keep the campus full of students.

The university has enough on its hands with a reduction in state funds and the loss of MAP grants so far this academic year because of the state budget stalemate.

Self-inflicted wounds, therefore, must be kept to a minimum. Going forward, that is one of President Killeen’s main challenges.

Putnam County Record here and there. A simple gift of chocolatey goodness, that’s about as far as I’ll journey into Christmas town.

PEKIN — The Christian Center’s Play with the Pros Baseball Clinic Dec. 19 at the Avanti’s Dome in Pekin will include instruction from World Series champ Ben Zobrist and Zach McAllister of the Cleveland Indians.

Zobrist, who is from Eureka, and McAllister (Chillicothe) are scheduled to be joined by Toronto Blue Jays pitcher Pat Venditte, and area minor league players.

Baseball clinic

SOUTH HOLLAND – South Suburban College head baseball coach Steve Ruzich will be directing a two-day Catching Camp on Wednesday, Dec. 30, and Thursday, Dec. 31, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

This clinic will provide catching instruction in the areas of blocking, calling a game, pick offs, pop throwing times, stance and footwork, drills for practice, pop ups, handling pitchers, and conditioning. In addition to Ruzich’s instruction, Bulldog baseball players will be on hand to help and develop skills. The players’ enthusiasm and expertise always adds to the camp’s success. The Catching Camp is open to boys ages 8-18. All players should bring their glove and gear. All participants should wear baseball or sweat pants and gym shoes, and boys must wear cups.

Ruzich has directed youth camps for the past 29 years and has taught baseball skills at many other baseball camps throughout the state. He was an All-American catcher at the College of St. Francis. He graduated in 1985 and was drafted by the Chicago White Sox. Coach Ruzich had a short stint as a pro catcher before coming to SSC as head baseball coach in 1987, where he has compiled a winning record of 1,048-607.

Panthers place second in tourney

KEWANEE — The Bureau Valley Storm and the Putnam County Panthers were fighting for two different things Saturday, Nov. 28, as the Panthers topped the Storm 56-41 in the final day of play at the Wally Keller Invite at Wethersfield High School in Kewanee.

BV played for pride while PC played for a chance to claim the championship.

Putnam County’s victory achieved their goal but they were forced to watch from the sidelines with their fate in the hands of the Wethersfield Geese in the final game of the tournament. A loss for Wethersfield would have given the tournament championship to the 4-1 Panthers through tie-breakers, but the Geese edged out Elmwood 43-37 to shift the championship from the Panthers, who claimed second place, to the Annawan Braves with the Geese taking third.

“We played hard and played with intensity. When we do that, we look pretty good,” PC coach Josh Nauman said.

BV knew coming in they would have their hands full with PC senior forward Alex Veverka, but a hot shooting night from senior guard Michael Miller provided a onetwo punch that the Storm couldn’t handle.

“Our effort was good, but our execution left something to be desired, especially in the first half. We were flaccid and we didn’t look to attack the basket. Giving up 35 points in the first half isn’t a recipe for winning for us. Giving up 21 points in the second half is much better. They are very coachable kids and want to get better and we’re making strides,” BV coach Jason Marquis said.

PC raced out to an 18-5 first quarter lead with less than a minute to play in the quarter anchored by two 3s from junior guard Noe Flores. The Panthers controlled the first half and much of the third quarter, as the young BV couldn’t contain the duo of Veverka and Miller as they combined for 27 of PC’s 35 first half points.

“It’s hard to double Alec because we have shooters on the outside that can knock down shots. Alec has so many moves that he’s hard to guard, but he finds people cutting towards the basket all the time,” Miller said.

The Storm were resilient and continued to maintain their never-give-in attitude as a 9-0 Storm run led by freshman guard Nate Paup with two buckets and two assists aided BV in cutting its deficit to only 56-41 by the time of the final buzzer.

Veverka was a force inside for the Panthers with 15 points, 18 rebounds and five assists. Three of Veverka’s assists came on Miller treys as he knocked down five shots from behind the arc on his way to a game-high 17 points.

“Tonight, Alex got his points but other guys stepped up and hit shots, and when we have both the inside and outside going it’s pretty tough to guard,” Nauman said.

Paup provided the pop for the BV offense with 12 points with junior forward Hunter Sebby nipping at his heels with 10 points for the Storm.

“Going 4-1 is a good way to start the season and the last four we played really well,” Nauman said.

“With the exception of our first half against Annawan, our effort was very good. That’s the big thing we are looking for from these kids is to continue to get after it.

We could make the excuse that we’re young, but we’re not going to. We’re just going to say we’re going to get a lot better,” Marquis said. “We have a lot of improve-

ment to do, but I’m confident with the character and work ethic of those kids they’re going to get a lot better.”

Putnam County beat Wethersfield 63-28 behind Michael Miller’s 17 points while Christian Harris added 10 on Nov. 27. The Panthers held a 22-14 halftime lead and extended it to 41-19 after three quarters.

Putnam County beats Elmwood

The Panthers beat Elmwood 59-35 on Nov. 25 behind Alec Veverka’s 19 points and Christian Harris’ 15. Putnam County jumped out to a 23-7 lead at the end of the first quarter and never looked back in cruising to the 24-point win.

Putnam County beats Midland

The Panthers easily defeated Midland on Nov. 24, 74-38, behind Alec Veverka’s 25 points and Noe Flores’ 12. Connor Taylor added 11 while Christian Harris had 10.

Annawan beats Putnam County

The Panthers lost to tourney champion Annawan 59-50 on Nov. 23. Alec Veverka led the Panthers’ scoring with 18 points with Connor Taylor scoring 10.

Upcoming events planned for Magnolia MAGNOLIA — Santa Claus will make a stop at the Magnolia Fire Department on Sunday, Dec. 6.

Starting at 1 p.m., children are welcome to enjoy lunch (pizza, hot dogs, chips, applesauce, juice and desserts), play Bingo for age-appropriate prizes and take part in a take-home craft.

Santa will come about 2 p.m. to talk with the children and for parents to take photos.

Book fair planned at PMH PRINCETON — The Perry Memorial Auxiliary will sponsor a book fair from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 17, and Friday, Dec. 18. The book fair will be held in the Medical Office Building lobby at Perry.

Festival 56 will present Jacob Marley’s ‘Christmas Carol’ for the holidays PRINCETON — There’s more to Jacob Marley’s ghost than meets the eye.

In this Festival 56 holiday performance, Marley, the first ghost in Dickens’ “Christmas Carol,” reveals what he’s been doing for the seven years that have elapsed between his death and his famous translucent, shrieking, chain-clanking appearance in Scrooge’s parlor.

“Christmas Carol” readers will recall Marley’s remorseful lament and warning to Scrooge to mend his hard-hearted ways: “I wear the chain I forged in life,” says the ghost, and Scrooge, for being a Scrooge, wears one too, “full as heavy and as long as this.”

But that’s not the half of it.

In the hands of playwright Tom Mula, Jacob Marley’s “Christmas Carol” takes audiences through Marley’s seven-yearlong ghostly crusade to redeem not only his own soul but Scrooge’s soul as well.

He is accompanied in his efforts by a Bogle (think mischievous sprite) as they travel from the Jaws of Death to the Mouth of Hell – and farther.

This is a Jacob Marley whose reimagined story contains echoes of not only the original “Christmas Carol,” but also of Lewis Carroll in what reviewers

have called its “zany” and “irreverent” moments. But like its Dickensian ancestor, this ghost story has (spoiler alert) a happy ending.

Jacob Marley’s “Christmas Carol” played for two seasons at Chicago’s Goodman Theatre, was nominated for four Joseph Jefferson Awards, and received an After Dark Award and the Goodman Theatre’s Cunningham Prize for Playwriting. It has been featured for seven seasons on NPR. Jacob Marley’s “Christmas Carol” opens at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 5, at the Grace Performing Arts Center, 316 S. Main St., Princeton. Additional performances are at 7:30 p.m. Dec. 11, 12, 18 and 19, and 2 p.m. Dec. 6, 13 and 20.

Tree of Lights begins annual campaign PRINCETON — The Perry Memorial Hospital Auxiliary Tree of Lights Committee kicked off its annual campaign at the Auxiliary Candy Cane event in November.

Since 1990, more than $90,000 has been raised and donated to the hospital for needed equipment.

This year, donations to the Tree of Lights will be used to purchase an elliptical exercise machine for the cardiac rehabilitation department.

Special “lights” will be

shining this Christmas at Perry Memorial Hospital. A donation to the Tree of Lights is a unique way to express appreciation by honoring loved ones, friends, teachers, special groups and others. It is also a special way to memorialize someone who has left behind countless memories and friendships.

A donation of $10 will light one these special “lights” and a donation of $100 will light a special “light” on the star. When

a donation of $20 or more is given, an acknowledgment card will be sent to the person or family the donation is honoring. A tax deductible receipt will also be sent when requested.

IVCC instructor attends annual meeting of geologists Illinois Valley Community College geology instructor Mike Phillips attended the annual meeting of the Geological Society of America (GSA) Nov. 1-4 in Baltimore. The meeting was attended by more than 7,000 geologists from around the world presenting more than 4,700 talks and posters.

Phillips presented a talk describing a new instructional module he has developed with Ph.D. candidate Lisa Phillips of Illinois State University’s English department and Kate Darby, assistant professor of environmental studies at Western Washington University. He also coauthored a talk with geologist David Voorhees of Waubonsee Community College discussing transfer issues for community college students.

“The meeting and field trip were

an excellent opportunity for me to share and learn,” said Phillips. “I gained a wealth of information I will be able to use in the classroom and the community.”

On first day of the meeting, Phillips began a three-year term as a councilor-at-large on the executive committee of the National Association of Geoscience Teachers, which meets in conjunction with the GSA. Phillips attended presentations describing research on the geology of Mars, the causes and impacts of the recent earthquake in Nepal, and the impact of hydraulic fracturing (fracking) on the environment.

In the exhibition hall, he reviewed teaching materials, made contacts and obtained maps and other items to use in the classroom. When the meeting concluded, Phillips went on a two-day field trip to examine the rocks present in the Appalachian mountains of Virginia and discussed the processes responsible for their

Student exchange looking for community members The World Heritage International Student Exchange Program is seeking representatives to work with volunteer host families and international exchange students in the community.

WH provides academic year and semester exchange programs in the U.S. for high school students from around the world. Students are 15 to 18 years old, have passed a series of academic and character requirements and are awaiting an opportunity to embark on their American adventure. Local representatives also have the opportunity to support American students in their journey abroad.

Area representatives recruit and screen prospective host families, supervise the exchange students in their community throughout the year and interview American students who wish to live and learn abroad. Area representatives are compensated based on the number of students they are supervising.

WH’s primary goal is to contribute to international understanding by enabling students to learn about other languages and cultures through active participation in family, school and community life. Through sharing their home, host families and communities also gain new knowledge

and appreciation of other cultures and languages.

WH is a non-profit, public benefit organization affiliated with and operated under the sponsorship of ASSE International. WH programs are conducted in accordance with the standards established by the U.S. Council on Standards for International Educational Travel.

WH is also a member of the Alliance for International Educational and Cultural Exchange.

Diabetes meeting offered monthly PRINCETON — The diagnosis of diabetes is becoming more common than many other health conditions.

Ongoing management of diabetes is important in limiting the complications which can develop with diabetes.

An individual with diabetes must learn many lifestyle changes in order to take control of the disease and decrease the

complications and their impact on their quality of life.

Change isn’t always easy and especially difficult if it is being done without support. Perry Memorial Hospital wants to provide information and support to those who are dealing with diabetes.

Each month, on the second Tuesday, Perry has an informational meeting to provide up-to-

date guidelines and realistic ways to manage the diagnosis of diabetes.

There will also be time at each meeting for open discussion and sharing of ideas.

The next diabetes meeting will be at 6 p.m.

Tuesday, Dec. 8, in the White Oak Classroom at Perry Memorial Hospital.

‘The Most Wonderful Time of the Year’ will be presented Dec. 5 OGLESBY — Illinois Valley Community College’s music and theatre departments will present “The Most Wonderful Time of the Year” at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 5, in the Cultural Centre.

The annual holiday revue is free and open to the public and features the combined music and theatre departments for a one night engagement starring Santa and Mrs. Claus. The Choir and the Show Choir open the show together.

Act 1 features the Choir, a combination of IVCC students and staff and community members under the direction of instructor Norman Engstrom. They

will present a variety of holiday songs from a wide range of genres.

Selections include a classical flavor with “Silent Night,” a Baroque medley and Tchaikovsky. Some international flair is provided with a Hebrew song and a Caribbean carol.

Also included are some humorous songs and some newer Christmas songs.

Act 2 features the high-energy song and dance troupe, the IVCC Show Choir, under the direction and choreography of Don Grant Zellmer, this year presenting a Pop Holiday. The cast will sing and dance through familiar standards, such

as “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree,’ as well as Mariah Carey’s “All I Want For Christmas Is You.” Many cast members are familiar faces to IVCC theatre audiences, having appeared in many shows throughout the year. With sentimental ballads, novelty songs, and familiar holiday tunes, the cast presents an exciting and entertaining salute to the season.

As a finale, both the Show Choir and Choir will recombine to lead the audience in a holiday singalong, with Santa and Mrs. Claus, the two groups’ directors, Engstrom and Zellmer.

IVCC Adult Education program announces upcoming classes

OGLESBY — The Adult Education program at Illinois Valley Community College will offer free high school equivalency (HSE) traditional and online preparation classes as well as English Language Acquisition (ELA) classes beginning the week of Jan. 19 and 20.

Classes are offered at IVCC’s Oglesby campus, its Ottawa Center, and in LaSalle, Mendota and Spring Valley. For a class

In addition to the GED computer-based test, the Test Assessing Secondary Completion (TASC) and the High School Equivalency Test (HiSet) are scheduled to be offered in Illinois beginning in January at designated sites.
