Habitat for Humanity of La Salle-Bureau-Putnam counties Board President Dan Fitzgerald welcomes the Heath family to the site of their new home during a February ceremony. The home now is ready for the Heath family to move in.

Habitat for Humanity home in Ladd dedicated By DEREK BARICHELLO

dbarichello@shawmedia.com LADD – An empty lot in Ladd a year ago now will be home to the Heath family. The Habitat for Humanity house at 319 S. Iowa St. was dedicated during a Nov. 20 ceremony. The house was the result of hard work and dedication by the volunteers and donors of the Habitat for Humanity of La Salle, Bureau and Putnam counties. The dedication highlighted those instrumental in the build, the Habitat board, and included a blessing by the Rev. Ron Margherio. The Heath family was selected from

a group of applicants by a committee representing the Habitat for Humanity. The family includes father, Justin; mother, Kayla; daughter, Hazel, and baby Evelynn. The new home is located just blocks away from the Ladd Community Consolidated School. The residents of Ladd and Club Ladd 89 members are the true “can-do” commitment behind this Habitat project, said Sally Van Cura, executive director of Habitat-LBPC. “The Ladd build is a story of the Habitat mission as it is actually being played out in Ladd,” Van Cura said when the build first launched. “It’s a community coming together to vol-

unteer, fundraise, donate and provide services to make the dream of home ownership possible for a qualified family. It’s welcoming a family and giving them a change for a safe and affordable place to call home.” Club Ladd 89 issued a statement thanking everyone who contributed. Club Ladd 89 provided donations for the Habitat home. Club Ladd 89 members provided a donation of $89 (or more), which helped launch the build. “Thank you everyone for turning a dream into a reality,” Van Cura said. “It makes you realize how many good people there are. So proud to say I am from Ladd. The village always amazes me.”

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Is aerial spraying possible with wind turbines? A: Yes. There are thousands of wind turbines in Illinois and farmers continue to spray their crops.

Q: How will the turbines impact land use? A: A turbine and its access road combined take up less than an acre of property -- you can use your property as you have always done in the past.

Q: Are the turbines a safety hazard? A: A team of locally hired, highly-skilled wind technicians monitor the turbines on a daily basis to ensure everyone's safety.

Q: Do wind turbines create sound? A: Turbines create sound, but by the time it reaches a residence it is no more noticeable than the humming of a refrigerator.

Q: Will I experience flicker? A: Turbines are placed in the middle of farm fields and they are sited to minimize flicker.

Q: Who removes the wind turbines at the end of the project? A: A bond will be in place to guarantee funds are available to remove (decommission) the wind farm at the end of its life cycle.

Q: How does construction impact drainage tile? A: The locations of drainage tile lines will be identified before construction and wind facilities will be installed to minimize impact. The company will pay to locate, move and repair any impacted tile lines.

Behind the lights: What goes into La Salle’s display Display runs through New Year’s Day By JAYCE EUSTICE

jeustice@shawmedia.com The work on La Salle’s Celebration of Lights in Rotary Park begins roughly six weeks before the gates open. It takes city employees hours to construct and prepare for opening night Monday, Nov. 15. From a handful of displays on a single road at its genesis, the event has grown to one that spans 2 to 3 miles and holds nearly 400 displays, attracting 15,000 to 20,000 vehicles this past year. The Celebration of Lights started nine years ago when Mayor Jeff Grove came up with the idea to have another holiday activity in La Salle. At its beginning, there were about 13 displays on a gravel road. The displays have grown from mostly being selected from a catalog to now many sponsors opting for a custom display that better exemplifies the company. Much thought and work goes into the setup, said Director of Community Development Brent Bader, who along with Administrative Assistant Beth Ketter gave a behind-the-scenes online presentation Tuesday night for the La Salle Public Library. “It’s something where we want it to feel like when you pass through those illuminated gates, you’re in an actual winter wonderland,” Bader said. “I think we’ve captured that pretty well. It’s something that we’re all very proud of here.” This year’s celebration will host 45 new displays and a newly designed route to take advantage of the recently constructed pathways. The new route also will include a Grinch Exit positioned about halfway through the event for those with small children or others who may need an early exit. The event will be open from 5 to 9 p.m. on weekdays and Sundays and from 5 to 10 p.m. on Fridays, Saturdays and the week of Christmas. The event began on Monday, Nov. 15, and runs through New Year’s Day. The city has developed a way of tagging and keeping each display for each sponsor to be showcased. The city orders a varying number of new displays each year. This helps keep the event fresh for repeat visitors. “What’s great when we’re adding new displays every year is that when you come back for repeat visits it’s a different experience every time,” Bader said. “You never know what

BELOW: Hundreds of extension cords are used in the Celebration of Lights display at Rotary Park. you’re going to find that wasn’t there last year.” Many hands outside of La Salle are essential to the survival and growth of the event. Bader said one of the most important aspects to the celebration is the amount of volunteers who donate their time to make the event possible. Whether it’s school volunteers collecting funds or a resident just trying to get into the holiday cheer, the work doesn’t go unnoticed by the city. “I think everyone that has a hand in this, from the volunteers to the sponsors of the displays and everyone that donates,” Bader said, “I think it’s something that really benefits from the spirit here in La Salle and our surrounding communities.” Ketter said in the beginning the displays weren’t run on traditional electricity but rather a system of generators to keep them illuminated. After the first year, the city decided to go to local businesses with catalogs, explain the program they wanted to grow and ask for them to sponsor a display. This tactic worked as many busi-

nesses not only in La Salle, but also across the Illinois Valley have become sponsors as the event continues to grow. “We don’t go out and ask people to participate anymore. We don’t have to,” Ketter said. “We haven’t done that in about three years. They call

us now so that makes it much easier.” Despite the pandemic the event was able to offer an opportunity many families were happy to take advantage of, Bader said. As a result, the event saw immense support and growth during its last season.

Storm rally past Panthers, claim title at Wethersfield By KEVIN CHLUM

kchlum@shawmedia.com KEWANEE – Entering the fourth quarter down four points, the Bureau Valley boys basketball team extended its pressure and turned up the intensity. The Storm forced Putnam County into turnovers on its first six possessions of the fourth quarter and converted the miscues into nine points. Bureau Valley led the rest of the way to win, 49-41, on Saturday to claim the championship at the Wethersfield Wally Keller Invitational with a 5-0 record. “It means a lot,” said BV senior Carter Salisbury, who was named as the tournament MVP. “We’ve been practicing hard. We went game by game. We got to this last game and to pull through being down going into the fourth, it means a lot.” The Panthers scored the last two baskets of the third quarter to take a 33-29 lead into the final eight minutes. Putnam County was whistled for a charge on the first possession of the fourth and Salisbury sank a pair of free throws at the other end. Then the Storm’s defense kicked in. A tipped pass led to a bucket by Layton Britt. Brock Foster tipped another pass and took it in for a fast-break basket and a 35-33 lead. The Storm then got steals on Putnam County’s next three possessions, converting the turnovers into 3-of-6 free-throw shooting for a 38-33 lead. “That was just players making good plays,” BV coach Jason Marquis said. “It was no adjustments from a coaching standpoint. It was just kids starting to realize what’s on the line. The more you put into it, the more you seem to be able to find in your tank when you really need it.” The Storm extended their lead to 41-33 before Putnam County scored its first points of the fourth quarter with 4:11 left. “For about three and a half quarters, we competed,” PC coach Harold Fay said. “Then we had a couple bad breaks and we seemed to kind of hang our shoulders and stopped doing what

kept us in the game. “We went back to one-on-one and trying to go by ourselves instead of keeping it a team concept where everybody is moving. That’s what got us in trouble.” Britt drained a 3-pointer from the corner and Salisbury followed with a pair of free throws to expand the Storm’s lead to 47-35 with 2:10 left. “That’s a mental toughness quarter,” Marquis said. “Fatigue sets in. I don’t think we had a turnover. I don’t think we gave up an offensive rebound. That’s the epitome of what good teams do – do the simple things with extraordinary consistency. We made sharp passes, met passes, made free throws, rebounded the ball and made sure every shot they took was contested. I thought we played really well in the fourth quarter.” The Storm led, 10-4, after the first quarter, but the Panthers outscored BV, 17-9, in the second to go into halftime up 21-19. Putnam County led by as many as six points at 29-23 with 4:14 left in the third, but the Storm rallied to tie it at 29 before the Panthers took their fourpoint lead into the fourth. Salisbury scored a game-high 22 points for Bureau Valley, while Foster and Adam Johnson added eight points each. “We haven’t won this tournament in a while, so to win it is going to provide some momentum going forward for the season,” Salisbury said. Andrew Pyszka led Putnam County (3-2) with 14 points, while Jackson McDonald added 12 points. • Notes: Pyszka and Jackson McDonald were both named to the all-tournament team. …. The PC sophomores finished 3-0 to capture the F/S division.
