The Red Covered Bridge Chorus treated patrons to a few Christmas songs at the end of its recent barbershop harmony performance at the Granville Public Library. Putnam County Food Pantry getting ready for Christmas Donations sought to support annual Basket Project GRANVILLE — Again this holiday season, the Putnam County Food Pantry, in collaboration with Toys in the Pantry, organizations, businesses, churches and schools from across the county, will be distributing Christmas baskets to local families in need.

This is the 31st year the Pantry has sponsored the basket project.

The baskets contain food and gifts for the children and senior citizens. Included are items for a full Christmas dinner, breakfast and pizza for Christmas Eve. This year so far, there have been basket requests from 102 families.

The baskets will be distributed on Saturday morning, Dec. 15.

To support the Basket Project, cash and food donations continue to be needed.

Products such as coffee, hot chocolate, drinks, jello, canned fruit, easy to prepare meals, and personal care items will be especially appreciated.

A cash donation of $75 will sup-

port the cost of food for one average-size family.

Donations may be sent to the Putnam County Food Pantry, P.O. Box 96, Granville, IL 61326, or deposited directly at the Granville National Bank. Food may be left at any of the county banks or at the Food Pantry.

Over the years, the Putnam County community has been tremendously supportive of the ongoing work of the Food Pantry and the Christmas Basket Project.

The Food Pantry board sends its thanks and wishes for a happy holiday and a new year of peace to the people of Putnam County.

GRANVILLE

Water treatment project nears completion

BY DAVE COOK news@putnamcountyrecord.com GRANVILLE — The work to improve the village of Granville’s water treatment plant is nearing completion and will quite possibly be the second major project for the village to come in under budget this year.

“The project is right on target, and we’re still under the estimated cost by $1,500. To be there at this point in the game is really good,” Mike Richetta, village engineer, told the Granville Village Board at its Nov. 20 meeting after board members approved an additional expense.

The extensive work will result in the plant being fully up-to-date with standards. Vissering Construction Co. of Streator was awarded the job with a $552,000 bid.

The project has included the replacement of a variety of pipes, valves and controls that weren’t part of the initial estimates and required the village to previously approve an additional $80,000, which will come from village funds. Approximately $373,000 for the project has been provided through grants.

Richetta was at the meeting to get a change order approval from the board that would authorize a $1,100 payment for an additional piece of unexpected equipment. The manufacturer of a made-to-order regula-

tor valve for the plant’s brine system recommended the addition of a pressure regulator valve.

“We’ve been modulating the pressure with a ball valve, but it’s not really the right way to do it, so I recommend approval of this change order,” he said prior to the vote.

The village’s Public Works Department reported the final connections of the major renovation project’s piping and control improvements would likely be completed the following week and that the work was on schedule.

Insurance changes Mike Gonet, of Gonet Insurance, spoke to the board about the renewal of the village’s liability insurance policy and his recommended changes.

The first change was to add $25,000 in coverage for the village tornado siren. Gonet also recommended an increase to the coverage for village hall.

“It currently has a replacement coverage of $450,000, but we recommend increasing that to $600,000.

That will increase the premium about 300 to 350 dollars,” Gonet said.

The board approved both additions and the overall policy renewal at a cost of $45,000, which is $1,000 lower than last year, even with the additional coverage.

In other board news During the public comment portion of the meeting, resident and former board member Bob Fescenmeyer suggested the board look into the possibility of purchasing maintenance and repair insurance.

“We used to have it years ago, and it saved us a lot of money,” he said.

However, it saved the village so much money during that time that they were eventually dropped by the insurer. Fescenmeyer said enough time may have passed that the village could once again purchase a policy to cover all the new equipment the village has recently acquired.

Board member Jim Petit told the board he’d begin gathering information regarding this issue.

The board approved a $1 per year lease to resolve the zoning issue at 602 E. Hopkins Ave. The landowner will pay the village a dollar to retain the fence which was found to be on village property. The lease will remain in perpetuity and will be transferable unless the village has need to access the area for public works uses.

The board approved an hourly salary of $13.50 per hour, up from $10 per hour, to hire a part-time and on-call snow plow driver.

Petit announced he would have the village’s levy information ready for the next village board meeting scheduled for 6:30 p.m. on Dec. 4.

Putnam County Board accepts budget deficit Nov. 19 Finance Committee meeting targets staff ’s health insurance, wages

BY DAVE COOK news@putnamcountyrecord.com HENNEPIN — Putnam County is facing a significant budget deficit for the upcoming year and during the recent Putnam County Board’s Finance Committee budget meeting, it became apparent the problem won’t likely be solved easily or soon.

During the previous finance meeting on Nov. 14, funding for the school’s youth programs and the county’s senior center, less than $10,000 combined, was eliminated, as were the county’s economic rebate incentives, but not much else.

Other previous spending cuts have been a reduction in the hours of operation at the courthouse, which lowered the overall pay of the hourly employees, and a cut in material expenses.

The Nov. 19 meeting began with discussions about reductions to health insurance coverage for the county’s 27 employees.

‘On the backs of employees’ Putnam County Sheriff Kevin Doyle was in attendance and said board members were trying to put the county’s financial problems “on the backs of the employees.” Doyle also questioned how, at this point in the budget process, with only days to go until the deadline, the board still didn’t have all its necessary financial information.

“You start messing with people’s

health insurance, and we’ll start losing good employees, and then you’ll get what you get.

You’re making decisions, and you don’t even have all of your information. How can Steve Malavolti you come to a budget meeting without that?”

Chairman, Putnam County Doyle said.

The sheriff also told Board the board to remove the $25,000 budget line item for a new vehicle for his office, saying it was his contribution and that he’d find a way to pay for the vehicle with other funds.

Bolstering Doyle’s argument that the problem was being passed on to employees, the board later discussed possible wage cuts for employees.

The courthouse employees present were personally asked by board members about their hourly wages, even though the board had their income information on the paperwork being reviewed.

It was said the county’s total health insurance costs for the previous year was approximately $518,000, and the county currently pays 80 percent, or more than $415,000.

“Do we want to keep paying that?”

Putnam County Board Chairman Steve Malavolti asked.

He estimated there would also be a 6 percent increase, or $40,000, in these costs, a figure provided by the state’s Office of Central Management.

“We’ll be passing along the 6 percent increase, which we haven’t done in the past,” he said.

Board member Sheila Haage was opposed to reducing the percentage of coverage for employees from 80 percent to 75 percent, saying it would be a burden for young families.

Special meeting Putnam County Clerk Dan Kuhn has announced a special county board meeting is scheduled for 8 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 28 at the courthouse to approve the budget appropriation ordinance for 2019. the financial challenge.

“We’ve got to do something,” board member Willie Holmes added.

Another suggestion the board discussed was eliminating coverage and giving employees a flat-rate stipend to be used to purchase health insurance on their own.

The board ultimately decided on a pay freeze in lieu of changing employee’s health insurance.

“However, the committee will still to try to find if there are other possible solutions to offset the high cost of health insurance. We are not alone in this issue,” Malavolti later said.

He said operating expenses for the courthouse had basically been cut to the bare necessities.

The board also reviewed the expenses of the county’s Office of Emergency Management. Haage said the office has been spending only a small percentage of the amount budgeted for them and requested their appropriated amounts be changed to reflect that.

Small amounts do add up to larger amounts, but many of the figures discussed by the board, several hundred here and a few thousand there, weren’t going to result in any substantial reduction in the county’s deficit.

After almost two hours, Malavolti said the budget wouldn’t be balanced and that a deficit would remain.

He said the treasurer’s office was estimating $2.6 million in revenue for 2019, an increase from the $2.4

million the previous year. Malavolti also said because of the time constraint, the corporate levy for the General Fund would be increased only by the amounts allowed by statute. He said this would result in an estimated increase of revenue from roughly $553,000 to $574,000.

The board is still waiting for an estimation of the increased revenue that higher court fees and fines could provide. Zoning inspection fees will also be raised.

‘Out of whack’ He said early in the meeting that last year’s budget was almost $1 million “out of whack” and that there was a current deficit of more than $358,000. It was later said that number wasn’t accurate and shouldn’t be used because the board was still working on the new budget.

On Nov. 20, Malavolti reported the final budget deficit would be $455,963. The 2018 budget totaled approximately $4.3 million. The 2019 budget total is approximately $3.8 million.

“The committee knew going into this process the budget wouldn’t be able to balanced within one year.

We managed to curtail the budget to hopefully what the county’s revenue will be. In the mean time, we’ll only borrow what the county needs in tax anticipation loans or through other avenues available to the treasurer.

Also, we’ll continue to watch spending and see where the revenues are at mid-year, based on the expected revenues we budgeted from,” he reported.

Rotary project to distribute more than 600 plants; senior citizens, 68 and older, should call by Dec. 1 to confirm they are on list Putnam County Rotary’s sleigh bells will once again be announcing the arrival of Christmas poinsettias for senior citizens throughout Putnam County, from 8 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Dec. 8.

The evening benefited the school’s Unified P.E. and Special Olympics programs by raising $1,600, and Sandburg Trucking graciously donated an additional $500. Wiesbrock said the funds will be used to purchase new uniforms and modified equipment for the students.

RICHARD WEDDELL JR. HENNEPIN — Richard C. Weddell Jr., 68, of Hennepin passed away Tuesday, Nov. 20, 2018, at his residence with his loving family by his side.

Richard was born May 12, 1950, in Florid to Richard C. and Hazel (Galiher) Weddell Sr. He married Lee Ann Barnes on Sept. 20, 1969, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Granville.

Richard graduated from Putnam County High School. He served in the U.S. Air Force in Vietnam.

He was an operator on the pickle line at the Hennepin Steel Mill in Hennepin.

Rich was a member of the Hennepin Fire Department, Hennepin American Legion Post 1044, Hennepin Park District Board for 10 years, Hennepin Town Board for 16 years and United Steel Workers of America for 43 years.

He was a registered IHSA umpire for many years.

He is survived by his wife, Lee Ann Weddell of Hennepin; his mother, Hazel Weddell of Ottawa; three sons,

Cremation rites were accorded following the service. Burial will be at a later date, with full military honors.

Visitation was held Friday, Nov. 23, at the Dysart-Cofoid Funeral Chapel in Granville. Additional visitation was prior to the service at the church.

GRANVILLE — Robert “Bert” M. Giuliani, 70, of Granville passed away Thursday, Nov. 22, 2018, at his residence with his loving family by his side.

Bert was born Sept. 14, 1948, in Pittsburgh, Pa., to Edward and Hazel (Stallings) Giuliani.

He married Cynthia Deuth on April 20, 1968, in Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Granville.

He graduated from Chartier Valley High School in Pennsylvania. Bert also attended Robert Morris College and Illinois Valley Community College. He was an operator on the Gal Line at the Hennepin Steel Plant.

Bert was the union safety representative for United Steel Workers of America. He was the lead singer in the Cadillac’s band and in a band called the National Pastime. Bert was an avid Chicago Bears fan.

Survivors include his wife, Cynthia Giuliani of Granville; three sons, Jeff (Angela) Giuliani of LaSalle, James

Giuliani of Florida and Jesse Giuliani of Florida; one daughter, Joely (Brent) Lyon of Sheffield; two brothers, Edward (Rachel) Giuliani of Pennsylvania and John (Sharon) Harley of Georgia; four grandchildren, Jordan, Josh, Abby and Jeno; and two great-grandchildren, Gianna and Oakley. Also surviving is his beloved dog, “Charlie” He was preceded in death by his parents; his nephews, Johnny and Christopher; and one great-grandson, Brantley.

A Celebration of Life was held Monday, Nov. 26, at the Dysart-Cofoid Funeral Chapel in Granville. Cremation rites will be accorded. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery at a later date.

PERU — Emma Zielinski, 96, of Peru, formerly of Hennepin, passed away Friday, Nov. 23, 2018, at Manor Court in Peru.

Emma was born Aug. 22, 1922, in Hennepin Township to Barney and Mary (Vacca) Bima.

She married Joe Zielinski in 1943 in Hennepin.

She was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Hennepin. She loved traveling with her husband. She enjoyed going to sports activities and cheering on her children and grandchildren.

Emma loved playing cards and cooking Italian foods, she was a great cook.

Survivors include two sons, Joe (Janet) Zielinski of Lostant and Jerry (Barbara) Zielinski of Naples, Fla.; two daughters, Jo Ann (the late Chuck) Hatton of Hennepin and Judy (Steve) Gabrielse of Hennepin; two brothers,

John Bima of Hennepin and Barney Bima of LaMoille; one sister, Katherine Waldschmidt of LaRose; nine grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded by her parents; her husband, Joe, in 2001; one granddaughter; and a son-in-law, Chuck Hatton.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held Tuesday, Nov. 27, at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Hennepin with Father Patrick DeMeulemeester officiating. Burial was in Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery in Granville. Visitation was held prior to the service at the church.

Organizer would like to see more such groups started

I

had the pleasure of meeting several Democratic women candidates from Lake County during the Illinois State Fair last summer. Sen. Melinda Bush (D-Grayslake) was showing them around town and brought them to a reception I was attending. We chatted for a while before they went on their merry way.

“Merry” is actually an understatement. Those candidates were positively joyful. They seemed genuinely thrilled to be running for office. Only one had ever run for something before. The rest felt compelled to get involved after the 2016 election.

Sen. Bush brought 10 women with her to Springfield, and she said four of them went on to win their respective races. Well, maybe three, but Bush is optimistic that Mary Edley-Allen will wind up defeating appointed Rep. Helene Miller Walsh (R-Mundelein). Edley-Allen is ahead by two votes as I write this, with more to count.

Joyce Mason, the only candidate who had run for office before and who defeated Rep. Sheri Jesiel by

more than 1,000 votes, was also at the event, as were two county board candidates who appear to have won, Jessica Vealitzek and Julie Simpson.

The county board flipped from Republican to Democratic control for the first time ever, and those two candidates were crucial to that effort. Two other women candidates who didn’t make the trip to Springfield both won countywide races, Robin O’Connor (clerk) and Holly Kim (treasurer).

Sen. Bush helped found an organization called the Lake County Democratic Independent Women on Oct. 30, 2017. She said she sent out some emails and started a Facebook page.

Women came out of the woodwork after the 2016 election, and Bush wanted to help them focus their enthusiasm on actually winning races and then holding on to those seats down the road.

The group has an office and a field director, and members meet once a month. A “pink wave” garden party fundraiser pulled in $15,000, and Bush said people told her at the event that it felt like “coming to a wedding, everyone is so happy.”

When Bush first won her own Senate seat in 2012, her district and both of its attached House districts were held by Republicans. Now, with Rep. Jesiel’s defeat, all three legislators are Democratic.

Things are definitely changing in Lake County, but they didn’t necessarily change on their own. The House Democrats did their part by pumping in tons of money and staff over the months, but Mason was also helped by that independent women’s group.

The House Democrats got into the Miller-Walsh race late, but Edley-Allen had taken the group’s training and had already been walking precincts for months.

“These were areas where we weren’t supposed to win,” Bush said.

Sen. Bush said that while House Speaker Michael Madigan is likely pleased that he has two more Democratic seats, she cautioned that both women are independent Democrats.

In other words, they’re not the usual ducklings who will quietly follow orders traditionally given to targeted members.

Bush said she doesn’t just want to help people win elections, “I want to help them be really good representatives.” She said her advice to all candidates is that they shouldn’t be thinking how their voting record in Springfield or on the county board would get them re-elected. Hard

work back in the district will pay greater dividends.

“The harder you work, the luckier you get,” she said. “I want to see people work really hard and do what they think is right.”

Bush should know. I jokingly chided her during her freshman year in office for having such a liberal voting record while representing an area not known for its liberalism.

But she won her last election by 9 percentage points and is encouraging others to do what she does: vote your conscience and work your tail off back home. So, even if you wind up losing, you can go out with no policy regrets.

That’s a refreshing attitude in the suburbs, where Democratic candidates are generally cautioned to steer a far more moderate, poll-tested course. But it’s not like the House Democrats need those two seats to retain their hold on Statehouse power. If nothing else, it could be an interesting experiment.

And Bush isn’t finished. She said 13 women have signed up for training in the upcoming municipal elections. “I’d like to see more of these in both parties,” she said of her organization.

I couldn’t agree more.

know that there is a portion of our great nation that would like to condemn us all to the fiery pits of hell, and that is their right under our Constitution, which we all took an oath to defend.

More than 16 million living veterans have served in war; 2.4 million of us from the Vietnam war.

Around 2 million American veterans are women.

More than 2.9 million veterans receive compensation for service-related disabilities.

World War I was believed at the time to be the “war to end all wars,” as it had been so terrible, no country would ever consider going to war again.

Nov. 11 marked the centennial of the end of that war. Since the end of World War I, America has fought

in nine more wars or “operations.”

We never seem to run out of enemies to fight in the world today.

However, our greatest number of war dead occurred not while fighting foreign foes, but came from when we fought ourselves in the Civil War, a war that claimed 618,000 lives — one death for every five men in service.

If nothing else, Veterans Day is a reminder that we should rededicate ourselves to the cause of peace. Sadly, politicians do NOT have the answer. They always seem to manage to get us into trouble.

As veterans, nothing on our uniforms said Republican or Democrat, etc. We all came from different backgrounds, united in the common goal of service to our country. And whether that service

was voluntary or not, we did our duty, whatever our country wanted that duty to be.

America will fight in more wars.

It seems to be what we have to do, as the world is so full of unsavory characters that keep the pot stirred. Those who want to kill us all could care less what political party we belong to.

The price of freedom is war. Service to our country is a principle that forms part of the bedrock of our nation.

Perhaps a time will come when we will no longer have a need for a Veterans Day holiday in the future.

Wishful thinking? Most likely, but at least, thanks in large part to our veterans, we can have that wish.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Thoughts on Veterans Day and the ‘war to end all wars’ To the editor: Veterans Day, which began in 1919 as Armistice Day to commemorate the end of World War I, became an official national holiday in 1938.

The day is intended to honor all American veterans, living and dead, whether their service was in peacetime or in war. (Memorial Day is the national holiday to honor our war dead.)

Typically, the day is the opportunity for most of the people in our country to give thanks to our living veterans for their honorable service given to preserve our American way of life, whatever that means to us.

Women’s group turned the tide in one county

Chief Senachwine Chapter helps locate World War I grave

HENRY — The Chief Senachwine Chapter NSDAR, in collaboration with John H. Kraus VFW Post 454, the “All Present and Accounted For” Project and the Lexington Genealogical and Historical Society, has been involved in a joint effort to recognize the sacrifices of American soldiers in World War I. The DAR chapter was asked to locate the grave of Vergne Greiner in Hennepin’s Riverside Cemetery.

Greiner was a 19-year-old soldier who grew up in Putnam County and later lived in McLean County.

Beginning with the goal to have all McLean County World War I graves located, cleaned and decorated by the Centennial Armistice Day on Nov. 11, 2018, McLean County groups sought identification of the burial locations of all McLean County soldiers who died during World War I. Information was scattered.

The Chief Senachwine Chapter was contacted after it was learned

that a McLean County soldier, Vergne Greiner (1899-1918), was buried in Hennepin. Assisted by Sidney Whitaker, president of the Putnam County Historical Society, chapter members learned the location of the grave and aided the McLean County organizations in their project.

Members committed to cleaning up the gravesite and the headstone, improving the appearance of the grave and sending a photo of the grave for historical preservation.

Flowers and the U.S. flag were placed at the gravesite and photos taken of Whitaker and Chief Senachwine regent Nancy Gillfillan to record Greiner’s grave location.

The Chief Senachwine Chapter was happy to have contributed to this intensive Find-a-Grave project and to help remember a World War I soldier who died in the service of his country. Vergne Greiner is buried in Riverside Cemetery in his family’s plot along with his parents, George and Irma Greiner.

OTTAWA OTTAWA — The Omicron Chapter of The Delta Kappa Gamma Society International met Nov. 20 at the Pitstick Pavilion in Ottawa.

Bill Harris of Neshkoro, Wis., presented the program, touching on renewable energy education, environmental conservation, electricity and magnetism, as well as adventures with canoe trips. He was assisted by three area middle school students.

Harris, through his public foundation, Renewable World Foundation, touches the lives of over 7,000 middle school students a year in six states. He has been doing this for 25 years. His objective is to inspire young people to think, use their minds, bodies and hands, not just their computers.

The business meeting was conducted by Mary Sue Myers, co-president. Correspondence was read, committee reports given and chapter goals established for the biennium.

Omicron Chapter will award a $750 grant-in-aid to a young lady who is a junior in college. Email gmgreek@gmail.com for an application which will be due Dec. 31. Omicron will also offer a $750 recruit-

ment grant to a young lady who is a senior in high school. Applicants should contact their high school guidance office for an application packet. Applications are due by Feb. 1, 2019. Applicants for both grants should either be attending or graduated from a high school in Grundy, LaSalle or Putnam counties.

Three Omicron members received $200 stipends from the chapter to be used in their classrooms as needed. They were Alaina Weatherford, Rutland Grade School, Ottawa; Stephanie Benson, River’s Edge Academy, Morris; and Marilee Applebee, Seneca High School.

Members brought their “loose change” to the meeting, which will be distributed to area food pantries.

HENRY — The Relay For Life teams of Marshall and Putnam counties will kick off the 2019 Relay season on Sunday, Dec. 2, with a pancake and sausage breakfast from 7 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Shandy’s Pub and Grub.

Teams already have already been hard at work raising money scare away cancer. Last year, the Marshall and Putnam counties raised almost $80,000 to finish the fight, and teams are keeping up that momentum going into this year’s Relay season.

Although Relay For Life of Marshall and Putnam counties is not until spring, now is the time to get involved. One in every 100 Americans participates in this fundraising event that has become a global phenomenon. Community members are

invited to attend the kick-off celebration to learn more about the upcoming event and how they can become part of this year’s Relay For Life.

Baked goods will also be available for sale at the bake sale. The event will also feature a silent auction, with items donated from each team.

The cost for breakfast is $8 for adults and $5 for children age 4 to 12. Children 3 and under are free. All proceeds benefit the American Cancer Society Relay For Life.

Donations can be made to this local Relay For Life event by visiting RelayForLife.org. Community members can also start or join a team by following the links to their local Relay event. For the latest information about M-P Relay events like their Facebook page.

MARSHALL, PUTNAM COUNTIES The Marshall-Putnam Farm Bureau Foundation welcomed President Abraham Lincoln and his wife, Mary, to Marshall and Putnam counties on Nov. 20.

President Lincoln began the

morning by visiting students at Midland Elementary in Lacon, and then headed to Putnam County Elementary School in Hennepin.

He and Mary spoke to the children about the Thanksgiving Proclama-

tion that he signed in 1863, working in agriculture as a child and the Bicentennial of Illinois. The President was asked numerous questions about his height, his childhood and his hat!

The Foundation also donated the book, “Thank You Sarah: The Woman Who Saved Thanksgiving,” to both school libraries. Julie Read, MP Ag in the Classroom, assisted with the day.

President Lincoln visits with students in Marshall and Putnam counties

U OF I MASTER GARDENER PROGRAM

Master Gardener program is now accepting online applications For the University of Illinois Extension Master Gardener program, the last four decades can be measured by the millions of volunteer hours given to help bring horticultural help to communities across the state.

This year marks the 48th anniversary of the Illinois Master Gardener program. With more than 3,000 members today, Illinois Master Gardeners have given more than 2,309,348 volunteer hours — a value of more than $46 million, to the state.

Today, Master Gardener volunteers, who come from farms, small towns, suburbs and cities, offer numerous educational opportunities related to gardening in nearly every county in the state.

The mission of the Illinois Master Gardener program is “Helping Others Learn to Grow.”

After 60 hours of training in topics such as vegetable and flower gardening, insect problems and plant diseases, the volunteers participate in programs throughout their communities. Some of those opportunities may include speaking at garden clubs, civic groups or schools; answering calls or emails at garden help desks; establishing demonstration gardens that serve as educational tools; and educating citizens on how to establish community gardens.

You don’t have to be a gardening expert to become a Master Gardener. All you need is an interest in gardening, some time to volunteer in the community and a desire to share your knowledge with others. The program is more about connections; connecting people with other gar-

deners, with their community, and with reliable resources for information. Once connections are forged, it’s time to get sowing and growing in our many meaningful community projects.

University of Illinois Extension is now accepting applications to participate in the Online Master Gardener Training Program. This new online program allows volunteers to complete the training who may have never been able to in the past due to schedule or time conflicts. This online, self-guided course for Illinois residents can be completed any time of day or night. Set aside about four hours per week for videos, reading manual and completing quizzes, and the training will be completed in 14 weeks.

The 2019 Winter Master Gardener Online Training includes 13 modules — an introduction and 12 subject-areas. Module topics include: botany; soils and fertilizers; plant diseases; entomology; integrated pest management; annuals and perennials; trees, shrubs and woody vines; lawns; small and tree fruits; vegetables; composting/organic gardening; and living with wildlife.

Each module consists of several videos and an online quiz; therefore, a strong Internet connection is highly recommended. Please note this training is not being offered in local Extension offices, but must be completed through use of a personal computer or other computer access. The registration cost for the program is $300, which includes the Master Gardener manual.

Registration for the winter 2019 class is now open and will continue through Jan. 4, 2019, and

Prairie Arts Council announces 2019 season

PRINCETON — The Prairie Arts Council is announcing a full season of community theater, featuring comedies and thrillers, in addition to its annual children’s musical.

The PAC will start off the year with a trip to “down home” Tuna, Texas. “Greater Tuna” by Jaston Williams, Joe Sears and Ed Howard is a comedy set in the ‘third smallest town’ in Texas. A cast of two will portray a variety of local and very colorful residents. This show will be performed Feb. 22-24 and will be directed by Dixie Schroeder.

The spring offering will be Neil

Simon’s classic comedy “Plaza Suite,” a play in three acts, each involving different characters but all set in Suite 719 of New York City’s Plaza Hotel. Director Ken Schroeder will be looking for seven men and four women to cast for the April 26-28 show.

The PAC’s third offering will again be presented in conjunction with Princeton’s Homestead Festival. “Deathtrap,” a mystery/thriller written by Sydney Lumet, will be performed Sept. 6-8. Director Joe Ennenbach will be looking for three men and two women to complete

the cast.

As in past years, the PAC will complete its season with a children’s holiday musical. Dates, show selection and director are to be determined.

Persons interested in participating in the theater program are encouraged to watch the PAC website, prairiearts.org, for tryout dates and information on each show. Volunteers are always welcome for all parts of the productions. Prairie Arts Council programming is funded in part by grants from the Illinois Arts Council, the National Endowment for the Arts and OmniArts.

Hunters in area counties shoot more deer in 2018 than 2017 SPRINGFIELD — Hunters in Illinois harvested a preliminary total of 58,836 deer during the first weekend of the Illinois Firearm Deer Season on Nov. 16-18. Hunters took 51,450 deer during the first firearm weekend in 2017.

Illinois’ seven-day Firearm Deer Season will conclude Nov. 29 through Dec. 2.

Other deer hunting opportunities in the weeks ahead include: • Muzzleloader-Only Deer Season on Dec. 7-9; • Late-Winter Antlerless-Only and CWD Deer Seasons (in select counties only) on Dec. 27-30, 2018 and Jan. 18-20, 2019; • Archery Deer Season continues through Jan. 20, 2019 (archery deer hunting is closed Nov. 29-Dec. 2 in counties open for Firearm Deer Season).

Hunters in Marshall County bagged 460 deer in 2018, compared to 424 in 2017.

Anderson named to Midland States Bank board EFFINGHAM — Jason T. Anderson, economic development director for the city of Rochelle, has been appointed to Midland States Bank’s board of directors.

“Jason’s experience in the Rock River Valley is important to our board, especially given our growing presence in the area. He has shown commitment time and time again to his region,” said Jeffrey C. Smith, chairman of Midland States Bank board of directors.

“When paired with his overall expertise in community based economic development, Jason is clearly a strong addition to our board,” Smith said.

During his 14 years with the city of

Rochelle, Anderson has been directly involved with attracting 12 new industries, three data centers, and 17 plant expansions. He also served as the CEO of the Greater Rochelle Economic Development Corp.

“Jason has gained a reputation as a champion for industrial development in rural America. He was born in Sterling, Illinois, and over the past 35 years has been business leader in the communities of Dixon, Rochelle and Ashton, all communities in northern

Illinois. He consistently has demonstrated a strong commitment to the development of the region,” said Leon J. Holschbach, Midland States Bancorp Inc. chief executive officer and Midland States Bank vice chairman.

“His experience as an economic development professional will be an asset to the board. This, along with his understanding of the northern Illinois market and successor to Tom Shaw, CEO of Shaw Newspapers, is noteworthy.”
