Superintendent discusses mitigation efforts BY KIM SHUTE kshute@shawmedia.com GRANVILLE — Putnam County Schools are pledging to remain open for in-person learning provided they can keep students and staff safe. Several area schools, including Bureau Valley School District and

Princeton High School and Prince ton Elementary School District have opted for remote learning, at least through the Thanksgiving holiday due to COVID-19 outbreaks, but so far Putnam County is holding it’s own says superintendent Carl Carlson. “We’re monitoring the numbers and we’ve been communicating with the health department, our nurses and our families,” Carlson said. “As long as our numbers are good

and we have adequate staffing at the schools our plan is to remain open for in-person learning.” According to Bureau, Marshall and Putnam County Health Departments Administrator Hector Gomez, 154 people were tested at the Hennepin drive-thru COVID testing at the Putnam County EMS building on Nov. 12. As of Friday, Nov. 20, Putnam County had 192 cases, with 15 new daily cases. They have had no recorded COVID deaths.

Putnam County educators awarded grant When springs starts to come back around, beautiful colors will brighten up the area around the Putnam County Junior High School sign and east side of the building. Missy Actis and Debbie Thompson of Putnam County Junior High were awarded the 2019 Schoolyard Habitat Action Grant, which provided plant species to the school. With this grant, students were able to help provide a natural area to the school’s landscape and learn about native species in the community. This grant was made possible through the Illinois Department of Natural Resources, the Jadel Youth Fund, Daniel F. and Ada L. Rice Foundation and the Illinois Conservation Foundation. Sponsors and an anonymous donor also supplied mulch for the landscape, which Actis and Thompson were thankful for.

68 new COVID cases, no deaths in Putnam County From Nov. 15 to Nov. 22, there were 68 new cases of COVID-19 recorded in Putnam County. As of Nov. 22, there have been a total of 229 total cases of COVID-19 in Putnam County since the start of the pandemic. There have been a total of 2,541 cases recorded in the health department’s three-county service area, which includes Bureau, Putnam and Marshall counties.

There have been no COVID-19 related deaths recorded in Putnam County to date. There have been 35 deaths recorded in Bureau County and five deaths recorded in Marshall County since the beginning of the pandemic. Putnam County cities and villages that have reported more than six cases since the start of the pandemic: • Hennepin: 43 cases; 558 tested.

• Granville: 96 cases; 736 tested. • McNabb: 19 cases; 189 tested. • Magnolia: 13 cases; 234 tested. • Putnam: 21 cases; 266 tested. • Mark: 17 cases; 153 tested. • Standard: 16 cases; 70 tested. There are two opportunities coming up to be tested for COVID-19. On Wednesday, Nov. 25, and Friday, Nov. 27, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Bureau County Fairgrounds, located at 811 W. Peru. St., Princeton.

Donations of cash and food being sought for 33rd annual Christmas basket project GRANVILLE — Again this holiday season, the Putnam County Food Pantry, in collaboration with Toys in the Pantry, organizations, businesses, churches and schools from across the county, will be distributing Christmas baskets to local families in need. This is the 33rd year the pantry has sponsored the basket project. The baskets contain food and gifts for the children and senior citizens. Included are items for a full Christmas dinner, breakfast and pizza for

Christmas Eve. The baskets will be distributed on the morning of Saturday, Dec. 19. To support the basket project, cash and food donations continue to be needed. Products such as coffee, hot chocolate, drinks, Jell-O, canned fruit, easy-to-prepare meals and personal care items will be especially appreciated. A cash donation of $75 will support the cost of food for one average-size family. Donations may be sent to the Putnam County Food Pan-

try, Box 96, Granville, or deposited directly at the Granville National Bank. Food may be left at any of the county banks or at the food pantry. Over the years, the Putnam County community has been tremendously supportive of the on-going work of the food pantry and the Christmas Basket Project. The pantry board sends its thanks and wishes for a happy holiday and a new year of peace to the people of Putnam County.

Joe Massino remembered for instilling confidence, getting most out of players BY KEVIN CHLUM kchlum@shawmedia.com When three high schools consolidated to become Putnam County High School in the late 1960s, Joe Massino made sure it was a smooth and successful transition for the athletic programs. After coaching at Hennepin High School, Massino took over the basketball and baseball programs at the new high school. “I think he really took on a difficult task when Putnam County became Putnam County, coaching student-athletes from three different schools and bringing them together to be successful,” said Jerry Zielinski, a 1968 PC graduate who is a member of the PC, Northern Illinois University and Illinois Basketball Coaches Associations Halls of Fame. “He had a knack for bringing people together and bringing teams together. He really got the most out of the athletes he had.”

Massino died Friday at the age of 83. “Joe was one of those guys you think is going to be around forever, and now he’s gone,” said 1972 PC graduate Tom Pomatto, a PC Hall of Famer. “His legacy will live on. The lessons I learned from him many years ago are still with me. “I was very fortunate to have learned the game from Joe and play the game under Joe. It’s something that has lasted me a lifetime. I’ll never forget him.” Massino led his baseball teams to a 191-42 record with three regional championships, a sectional championship and a state tournament appearance in a one-class system in 1972. “In terms of the overall impact, coach Massino had on then baseball program, the numbers don’t lie,” current PC baseball coach and athletic director Chris Newsome said. “He certainly paved the way for PC baseball by setting the bar high. From the yearbooks I’ve gone back through and former players with whom I’ve spoken, he expected hustle and hard work. He would tell you when you screwed up then coach you up so that you didn’t repeat the same mistakes. “He will certainly be missed, but his legacy and the same team characteristics carry on into current PC baseball teams.” Pomatto, who was a standout

pitcher on Massino’s state baseball team, said Massino was innovative. “He was ahead of his time back in that era,” Pomatto said. “Yes, we had talent, but coach had us doing things that I believe were ahead of their time. We mastered the squeeze bunt. That was something I believe put so much pressure on opponents. It was something we used strategically, often and successfully to win a lot of games. We also stole a lot of bases. We did a lot of things to put the pressure on the defense.” As a basketball coach, Massino led PC to a 59-16 record in then school’s first three years with a 20-4 record in 1966-67 and a 25-1 mark in 1967-68 — Zielinski’s senior year. “He saw something in me that I hadn’t seen in myself,” Zielinski said. “He really instilled in me the work ethic to become a better player. He worked me very hard. I didn’t always agree with it at the time. He taught me how to work, how to prepare and how to become a better player. I really give him probably most of the credit as far as the success that I had in high school and at Northern Illinois University. The things he taught not only me, but I think everybody around him, I used in my teaching and coaching professions. He had a tremendous impact on my whole life.” Pomatto also said Massino’s impact carried on beyond high

school. Pomatto kept up his relationship with Massino over the past five decades, even receiving a text from his old coach last week congratulating him on his Senior Baseball World Series title. “Joe was really a quiet guy, but as a coach, when he spoke, you listened,” Pomatto said. “He gave me a lot of confidence. A lot of times I was out there on the mound, he said, ‘Get your head up.’ He instilled a lot of pride in the program. His actions probably spoke louder than his words. He gave us respect.”

GRANVILLE — Betty Johnson, a member of Putnam County Rotary Club, was recently recognized by the club for her dedication to the Rotary ideal of Service Above Self. Johnson was surprised with the honor of being designated a “Paul Harris Fellow,” named after the founder of Rotary International. The award recognizes contributions made to the Rotary Foundation by Johnson, and contributed credits added by fellow Rotarian Brandy Sandberg. Monetary donations to the Rotary Foundation support international projects including health, literacy, vocational independence, polio eradication and world peace initiatives. Johnson’s professional past includes more than 50 years as a registered nurse, while also helping on the family farm in her earlier years. She is an active member of PC

New equipment has arrived at Festival 56

PRINCETON — Festival 56 has been creating and innovating art in the Princeton and surrounding communities for 16 consecutive summers. The 2020 season would have been the 17th summer, however, the world had other plans. Festival 56 was set to perform six incredible shows including, but not limited to, “Matilda,” “Fun Home” and its very own free Shakespeare in the Park “King Lear.” It was a season of life, love, grow-

ing up and getting old. Although the season could not continue on as originally scheduled, Festival 56 has other exciting news to share. It has received funding from both Church Women United and the Sun Foundation in order to produce Shakespeare in the Park, although free to patrons, not free for Festival 56. While it is custom to use these gracious funds to help us produce these shows, this summer we appropriated them to go toward the equipment

that goes into building and creating the sets patrons see and love every summer. Festival 56 operates with old equipment that has been in need of some serious updating over the past few years. This is the year those wishes finally came true. With the funds provided, Festival 56 was able to purchase equipment such as a new Miter saw, drills, gloves, casters and various other needed equipment used daily in the scene shop each and every summer.

This was all made possible in part by a grant from both Church Women United and the Sun Foundation, a state agency, funded by the National Endowment for the Arts and matching First National Bank of Lacon, Hallmark Corporate Foundation, Jim and Sue Weber for their incredible support. We also would like to thank our patrons and community for their undying support for live theater and keeping Festival 56 in operation.

Koch, 40, of Henry died from blunt force injuries occurring when the vehicle she was driving collided with a westbound tanker freight train south of Granville on Thursday, Nov. 19, Putnam County Death Investigator Bob Cofoid said. Putnam County Sheriff’s Office, the Death Investigator’s Office and Illinois State Police still are investigating the incident.

GRANVILLE — Allan L. Mecagni, 71, of Granville passed away on Sunday, November 15, 2020, at his residence. Cremation rites have been accorded. Service arrangements are pending at this time. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery. Dysart-Cofoid Funeral Chapel will be assisting the family with the arrangements. Allan was born on September 11, 1949, in Spring Valley to Nildo and Rose (Story) Mecagni. He married Mary Bryan on December 1, 1972. Allan served in the United States Army. He was a tractor operator in the coil yard at Hennepin Steel Mill. Survivors include his mother, Rose Mecagni of Spring Valley; one son, Corey (Marci) Mecagni of Merritt Island, Florida; two daughters, Mandy (Dan) Thompson of Hinckley, Illinois, and Sarah (Mark) Bogner of Kalaheo, Hawaii; one brother, Steve (Karen) Mecagni of Granville; one sister, Bonnie Lucas of Ladd; and eight

grandchildren, Joshua and Faith Thompson, Maya, Allan “A.J” and Letty Mecagni, and Tatum, Taelynn and Oriana Bogner. He was preceded in death by his father, Nildo, in 2014; his wife, Mary, on April 22, 2005; one brother, Vernon; and one son, James. College. Eddie served in the United States Army during World War II. He and his brother owned and operated Capitani Bros. Hardware Store in Granville for 20 years. After that, Eddie worked for 30 years for plumbing contractors with Local 597. Eddie was a member of the United Church of Christ, Masonic Lodge #1093, American Legion Post #180 and Plumbers Local #597. For many years he and his other American Legion friends drove their gaspowered horse and buggy called “The Mule” in numerous parades. Survivors include two sons, Norman (Cindy) Capitani of San Antonio, TX, and Frank (Kathy) Hiden of Spanaway, WA; one daughter, Kathy (Mike) Miroux of Spring Valley; 13 grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Luella Capitani; brother, Brunis Capitani; sisters, Jean Smith, Enis Barbaris and Nora Ingersoll. JOSEPH F. MASSINO Born: March 19, 1937 Died: November 13, 2020 HENNEPIN — Joseph F. Massino, 83, of Hennepin passed away Friday, Nov. 13. Mass of Christian Burial was Wednesday, Nov. 18, at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Hennepin. Burial was at St. Anthony’s Cemetery, Hennepin. Dysart-Cofoid Funeral Chapel assisted the family with the arrangements. Joe was born on March 19, 1937, in Streator, to Frank and Sandrina (Carrara) Massino. He married Johanna DiGiacinto on July 30, 1960, in Streator. He received his bachelor’s degree in education from Western Illinois University, and he received his master’s degree from Northern Illinois University. He was an administrator at Putnam County High School. He worked his entire 36-year career in the Putnam County School System. He was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Hennepin. He served as the district chairman for the Illinois High School Coaches Association and was inducted into the IHSA Coaches Hall of Fame in 1980. He was also inducted into the Putnam County High School Hall of Fame in 2012. His baseball coaching record included six district championships, three regional championships, one sectional championship and one trip to the state finals in 1972 in a single class system. He also won five Tri-County Conference titles

and three Illinois Valley championships. He Massino coached Connie Mack baseball in the summer, and his teams appeared in the state tournament eight out of ten years, winning the title in 1973. His Putnam County baseball record was 191 wins and 42 losses, not including the Connie Mack summer league. The final game he coached was the first Illinois High School Coaches Association All-Star Game. He spoke at numerous baseball conventions and clinics in Illinois. The baseball field in Hennepin was dedicated to him and named “Massino Field.” He was responsible for starting baseball and basketball programs and the consolidation of Putnam County Sports. He held the Tri-County Tournament basketball single game scoring record for multiple decades with 39 points in one game. Joe enjoyed hunting, fishing and spending time at his cabin in northern Wisconsin. He loved watching his grandchildren participate in sports. Survivors include his wife, Johanna Massino of Hennepin; two sons, Greg (Pam) Massino of South Beloit and Randy (Cindy) Massino of Birchwood, Wis.; two brothers, Larry Massino of Villa Park and Frank Massino of Las Vegas, Nev.; four grandchildren, Mallory (Jeff) Lewis, Julia Massino, Melissa Massino and Mitchell Massino. He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Anthony, Chester and Gary Massino; and three sisters, Rita Biagini, Sylvia Faw and Angie Healy. Irma loved having Sunday dinners with her family and she enjoyed her time on Bass Lake in Gwinn, Michigan, at the family cabin. She had a heart full of love and will be sorely missed. Putnam County Library District will return to curbside service due to COVID In order to help the prevention of COVID-19 and other flu-type viruses, the Putnam County Library District ent to curbside service effective Nov. 19. Materials can still be returned in the book drops, and all fines, during the time the library is in curbside, will be waived. Electronic databases, like RBDigital, Omni, eReadIllinois, Hoopla and Kanopy will remain open and available. Links for all can be found on the library’s website. Suspect in Ambert Alert facing new charges HENNEPIN — A Henry man involved in an alleged non-custodial child abduction has been hit with new charges. Kevin A. DelHotal, 32, last week was accused of taking his 2-month-old son from the baby’s mother’s home. After a a multi-agency search, the baby was safely located. DelHotal initially was charged with domestic battery. On Thursday his charges were upgraded to criminal sexual assault, a Class 1 felony, punishable by up to 4-15 years in prison. DelHotal is being held in custody on $100,000 bond, 10% of which must be posted for his release. Additionally, Putnam County State’s Attorney put a condition of bail that DelHotal must be fitted with an electronic monitoring device should he post bond. BY ALEX KANTECKI Shaw Media With the state moving to Tier-3 COVID-19 mitigations beginning Friday, the IHSA announced Thursday that all winter sports and activities will be paused. The announcement comes two days after the IHSA said it was temporarily pausing the winter sports season for low-contact sports, which were allowed to begin practicing on Monday. Those sports are boys and girls bowling, cheer, dance, boys swimming and diving, and girls gymnastics. Now, all winter sports, including those in the low-risk category, are on hold. Boys and girls basketball was moved to the high-risk category last month. Wrestling, a high-risk sport, already had been moved to the sum-

mer season (May 3 through June 26). The IHSA Board of Directors said it will revisit the status of winter sports at its next meeting on Dec. 2. The next scheduled meeting after that is Dec. 14. “All IHSA sports and activities will cease by Nov. 20 for what we hope is a short-term pause,” IHSA Executive Director Craig Anderson said in a statement. “Given the rising COVID19 cases in our state and region, we support the Governor’s mitigations and believe it is imperative for everyone in the state to do their part in following them so that we can return to high school sports participation as soon as possible.” In addition, conditioning and weight training both before and after school and open gyms are also paused. Outdoor workouts may be conducted in any sport in groups of 10 or less with masks and social distancing.

One-on-one skill work between a coach and student is permitted for winter sports, but limited to one coach and one student; however, coaches cannot organize non-school participation in any fashion. Practices and competitions may be conducted virtually for activities only. “Taking into account the current state mitigations, the Board believes that early to mid-December will be the most reasonable target to review the status of winter IHSA sports and activities,” Anderson said. “The Board is sensitive to the scheduling difficulties these delays create for athletic directors and coaches. However, our experiences this summer and fall lead us to believe that setting arbitrary start dates hinders the process even more. We realize it may seem redundant, but we have to preach patience as we await more data and direction from the state. Despite the

obstacles this unprecedented school year has presented, the Board’s vision to provide participation opportunities in all IHSA sports has not wavered. The IHSA had invited Gov. JB Pritzker, the Illinois Department of Public Health, Illinois State Board of Education and other agencies to Thursday’s meeting, but representatives from the governor’s office and IDPH did not attend. The IDPH has said the recent spike in coronavirus cases and statewide positivity rate already have surpassed the spring peak. On Thursday, the IDPH reported 14,612 new confirmed and probable cases of COVID-19 and 168 additional deaths, the second straight day with more than 100 deaths reported. The IHSA added that “adhering to the mitigations is vital to the hopes of safely playing high school sports in Illinois as soon as possible.”

Groups come together to repair pole bent in August derecho PRINCETON — Old Glory waves again in Princeton. Workers with Symonds Flag and Poles Inc. in Dallas teamed up with

Barnhart Crane in East Moline and the Flags of Freedom organization to raise a 143-foot American flag pole behind the AmericInn in

Princeton on Nov. 16. All four of the flagpoles were bent from the derecho storm in August. One of the poles had to

be totally replaced. The other three were repaired. The pole cost $37,000. It will support a 30-by-60foot flag.
