Experts say don’t just show up at health departments, hospitals

BY J.T. PEDELTY jtpedelty@shawmedia.com The daily number of new COVID19 cases in Illinois — including in Starved Rock Country — is at an all-time high.

So, too, is the number of tests.

To avoid becoming overwhelmed, local hospitals and health departments are asking those seeking testing or suspecting they may have contracted the coronavirus to first contact their physicians or use services such as telehealth instead of showing up at health care facilities unannounced requesting a test.

“There is a flood of people trying to figure out where to go for testing,” said Janet Long, public relations manager at Morris Hospital and Healthcare. “It’s resulting in tons of phone calls and misuse of the emergency room, which should be reserved for medical emergencies, not for asymptomatic people who are seeking quick test results.

“I think people really just need to know what’s available and how it works at each place.”

That varies by community, but even with rising demand COVID-19 testing is available across Starved Rock Country for those who have reason to be tested — or perhaps just evaluated.

Joan Fernandez of Illinois Valley Community Hospital Community Relations said a great first step for people who suspect they may have been exposed to someone with COVID-19 is to call IVCH’s COVID hotline, 815-780-3425.

“The easiest thing for people to do is call our hotline number [open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily], and then a nurse will guide them as to what is appropriate for that particular person,” Fernandez said.

“Right now, people sometimes will call for exposure, or their work makes them have a test even though they have no symptoms. We are really only testing people right now who have symptoms or a true exposure — more than 15 minutes, no mask, less than 6 feet away ... but every situation is a little individual.”

Those displaying symptoms can call their primary care physicians, visit OSF PromptCare or UrgentCare facilities, consult Chatbot Clare on the OSF website or call the OSF Nurse Hotline 24/7 at 833673-5669.

“Certain conditions apply,” Arco said, “and a member of our care team will determine which type of test is most appropriate.”

Morris Hospital offers drive-up nasal-swab testing on the far southwest corner of its campus from 7:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Friday. A physician’s order and an appointment are required.

St. Margaret’s Hospital in Spring Valley also requires a physician’s order, with testing available 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday as well as 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on weekends.

For patients who don’t have a physician but are exhibiting signs of an illness, the St. Margaret’s walk-in clinics at Midtown Health Center in Peru or Center for Family Health in Princeton are available. Patients will be offered a telehealth visit and,

if warranted, be sent for a swab test.

A number of pharmacies are beginning to offer coronavirus testing, and the LaSalle County Health Department offers additional testing beyond its weekly drive-thru.

That includes rapid testing for excluded symptomatic children who are not a close contact to a confirmed case to help get them back into school, employees who need a negative test result to return to work or anyone who is planning to travel or has traveled. Contact testing is also offered — again, by appointment only.

Additional health department testing can be found in nearby communities such as Bloomington, Pontiac or Aurora. The Illinois Department of Public Health maintains an online directory of such testing sites as well as mobile testing sites, such as the one which recently visited Streator.

Terry Madsen with the Bureau, Putnam and Marshall County Health Departments said the BPMCHD advertises testing locations regularly, but the best first step may be a simple phone call to the patient’s physician, who can better direct them where to go.

“Of course, if they think they have COVID-19,” Madsen said, “they should probably just call their doctor’s office and follow their instructions.”

The 42 elementary and secondary schools of the Diocese of Peoria returned to remote learning Monday. In-person instruction is expected to resume Jan. 19.

St. Bede Academy in Peru is not a Peoria diocese school, so it does not follow these guidelines.

Sharon Weiss, superintendent of Catholic schools for the Diocese of Peoria, said in a letter the decision came after “a review of data and information regarding the escalation of positivity and exposure rates for COVID-19 in Illinois during the next few weeks.” It was approved by

Bishop Daniel R. Jenky and Coadjutor Bishop Louis Tylka, who directed her to share the information.

The communication noted while the school buildings are closed, principals should make arrangements “to thoroughly disinfect and sanitize all areas within the schools.”

Principals and teachers may be in their offices and classrooms to facilitate remote-only learning during this time but must observe all public health mandates to prevent the spread of the coronavirus. That includes wearing masks, washing

hands frequently, checking their temperatures throughout the day and maintaining social distancing of more than 6 feet while interacting with other teachers.

No students will be allowed to enter the school buildings.

“Principals will coordinate with their faculty and families and publish guidelines for the distribution of school computer laptops, grading and assignments that must be picked up from and returned to the school,” according to the letter from the Office of Catholic Schools. The schools were asked to share their

procedures and protocols with families as soon as possible.

The Diocese of Peoria’s 42 elementary schools, middle schools and high schools enroll 9,107 students.

When the school year began, families were offered the option of in-person instruction or remote learning, with both being for five days a week.

A recent parent survey indicated about 9% of families chose remote learning for their students.

In addition, there are to be no sporting or extracurricular events scheduled at the school during the system-wide shutdown.

Granville Township donates $2,000 to Toys in the Pantry

BY GOLDIE RAPP news@putnamcountyrecord.com GRANVILLE — Granville Township has $2,000 towards Toys in Pantry organization.

Jim Moriarty, township supervisor, said when he read that the annual pork chop dinner fundraiser had to be canceled this year due to COVID-19, he knew the township needed to step up to help make up for the organization not being able to host its largest fundraiser of the year.

Cathy Oliveri, Toys in Pantry chair, recently met with Moriarty and Granville Township Clerk René Twardowski to accept the donation.

Toys in Pantry works through

the Putnam County Food Pantry to ensure all children in Putnam County receive a present or two under the Christmas tree. While Christmas only comes once a year, the Toys in the Pantry organization works through the year to ensure they serve every family in need.

Toys in the Pantry is currently accepting donations. The committee accepts unwrapped new toys or monetary donations, or monetary donations can be made to: Toys in the Pantry, P.O. Box 247, Granville, IL 61326.

Putnam County Sheriff ’s Office locates missing 2-month-old boy The Putnam County Sheriff’s Office responded to the complaint of a domestic disturbance on Nov. 15, at 8:55 a.m., that had occurred earlier that morning in McNabb.

During the course of the investigation, it was learned that a non-custodial parent, Kevin A. Delhotal, 32, had left the scene of the domestic disturbance with a 2-month-old boy.

Efforts were made to have Delhotal meet with the sheriff’s office to ensure the safety of the child. These efforts were met with negative results. Due to statements reported to the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office, the criteria was met to disseminate an Amber Alert to make contact with Delhotal to ensure the safe return of the child.

Delhotal was taken into custody without incident. The child was recovered unharmed.

Delhotal is currently in custody awaiting a bond hearing. At this time, Delhotal is being charged with domestic battery. The investigation is ongoing and further charges may be forthcoming.

HENRY — Cloverbuds (4-H youth ages 5-7) participated in a spider workshop on Oct. 31 at the University of Illinois Extension, Marshall-Putnam 4-H office in Henry.

The Cloverbuds listened to facts about spiders from Abrianne Holler.

They learned about the life cycle of spiders and how they are good for our environment.

IVCC approves tax levy not expected to increase its portion of property tax bills

OGLESBY — Homeowners should not see an increase in the Illinois Valley Community College portion of their property tax bill.

The estimated 2020 tax rate of 0.3557 is down slightly from the 2019 rate of 0.3644. The IVCC board adopted the tentative $12.8 million 2020 tax levy Oct. 12, a 3% increase over the $12.4 million actual 2019 levy.

Since the increase is less than 5%, there is no requirement for a public notice and public hearing before trustees move for final approval Dec. 10.

‘This could turn out to be a criminal investigation’

LaSalle Vets home workers silenced as COVID deaths rise to 13

BY TOM COLLINS tcollins@shawmedia.com Lawmakers are pledging to investigate the surge of COVID-19 at the Illinois Veterans Home at LaSalle that has infected 79 residents and killed 13 from complications related to the respiratory disease.

Answers from Springfield are pending; a spokeswoman for the Illinois Department of Veterans Affairs fielded questions from Shaw Media but did not respond by the close of business Friday.

Some workers at the veterans home are not holding their tongues, however. These workers contacted Shaw Media and, after explaining they would face retaliation for speaking out by name, were granted confidentiality. They blame the current surge on a combination of unreliable test results and gaps in infection controls.

“We did shoot up in numbers,” said one woman, who is among the 89 infected staff members. “Our numbers have just skyrocketed.”

Shaw Media requested public documents Thursday from the LaSalle County Health Department and the state documenting any complaints that have been made about the veterans home. Those entities have five days to provide a response.

While she and others use PPE to protect themselves and the veterans they care for, there have been noticeable flaws in the overall infection controls. She noted, for example, the time clock — one of the most-touched items at the facility — is not regularly sanitized, and there was an incident where a seemingly proven infection control was suddenly dropped.

The veterans home imposed a 14-day quarantine for residents who left the premises, such as for a doctor’s appointment; but that practice was halted.

“Our facility got too comfortable these last few weeks before the outbreak,” she said. “Now that was something we’ve been doing for a while and stopped, and later we have an outbreak? Why would management stop a precaution that seemed to work?”

Another worker, a man, believes the surge has less to do with vigilance than with laboratory testing that yielded skewed results.

“I want people to know we sent our tests to Springfield for 17 straight weeks. The only time we sent them to Chicago, we got 144 positives,” he said. “I think Springfield [did this to] us. I think it’s odd we went from 0 to 144 cases the same week we switched labs.”

And considering the rigid protective measures taken — temperature checks three times a day, once-aweek COVID-19 testing, vigilant use of masks and shields — the surge is more likely a byproduct of bad testing than a failure in infection controls, he said.

“There’s no way it spread to 144 people that fast,” he said. “That’s why I believe something went wrong at the Springfield lab, who also happened to have a COVID outbreak themselves and were probably running short-handed like us and made a mistake.”

The anonymous female staff member partially agreed that testing failures are part of the problem, as hers was among the test results that yielded a false negative. She said she was tested the first week of November, and the results came back negative three days later. While awaiting results, however, she said she dis-

played symptoms and sought another test at a private hospital, and those results came back positive.

Her doctor further noted a two- to five-day lag time between infection and the onset of symptoms, meaning the onsite test should have shown her to be positive.

Meanwhile, she’s been waiting for a particular type of PPE. Coworkers were provided N95 masks when the virus prompted widespread infection controls in March, but she never got one. N95 masks are used to protect the wearer from airborne particles and from liquid contaminating the face.

“Now, I caught COVID-19,” she said, “and I still have not been fitted for an N-95 mask.”

Not helping matters are rising tensions between management, staff and leaders of the union, the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees Local 3693.

The author was messaged for comment but did not reply.

“Please do not talk to the press, etc.,” read the missive. “We do not

want this to come back on us. AFSCME is in contact with the papers.

This could turn out to be a criminal investigation.”

Anders Lindall, spokesman for AFSCME Local 31, said there have been no complaints from union workers at this time, though membership is cognizant of the many risks of serving veterans during the pandemic.

“This goes without saying, the veterans in the home deserve and need the best care possible at all times.

Despite the pandemic, AFSCME members are going to work everyday with providing the best care for the veterans in mind. That means risking themselves and risking exposure to their families.”

“We believe we’ve followed good safety practices. We believe there’s been adequate PPE and cleaning supplies. We believe management understands the risk employees are taking.”

But the anonymous woman is a longtime employee who said mismanagement is a driving force behind the surge of infections.

“Under this management, it’s the worst I’ve ever seen it,” she said.

“It’s a disgrace.”

BRIEFS From Nov. 8 to Nov. 15, Bureau, Putnam, Marshall County Health Departments reported 33 new COVID-19 cases in Putnam County.

As of Nov. 15, there had been 162 total cases of COVID-19 in Putnam County since the beginning of the pandemic.

There have been a total of 2,025 COVID19 cases in the three-county region served by Bureau, Putnam, Marshall County Health Departments.

To date, there have been no COVID-19-related deaths reported in Putnam County. There have been 32 deaths reported in Bureau and Marshall counties. Bureau County has had 27 deaths and Marshall County has had five deaths.

Putnam County cities and villages that have reported more than six cases since the start of the pandemic: • Hennepin: 72 cases; 630 tested.

• Granville: 34 cases; 489 tested.

• McNabb: 18 cases; 172 tested.

• Magnolia: 12 cases; 222 tested.

• Putnam: 13 cases; 238 tested.

• Mark: 8 cases; 136 tested.

• Standard: 11 cases; 56 tested.

An upcoming opportunity to be tested for COVID-19 will be Wednesday, Nov. 25, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Bureau County Health Department, located at 526 Bureau Valley Parkway, Princeton.

Leonel A. Rosario, 36, of Providence, R.I., and Luz N. Torres, 44, of Cranston, R.I., are being held at the Bureau County Jail on charges of unlawful possession of methamphetamine with the intent to deliver — more than 900 grams.

The charge is a Class X felony, carrying with it a possible minimum prison sentence of six years and a maximum of 30 years if convicted.

Tri-DENT agents said a traffic stop was made at 9:25 a.m. Wednesday on Interstate 80 heading east near mile post 63 in Bureau County. Police said Rosario was stopped for improper lane usage and following too closely.

Agents conducted a search and located in the lower rocker panels of the vehicle nine plastic-wrapped packages of purported methamphetamine (about 9 pounds) and seven kilo-sized packages heavily wrapped in tape and plastic wrap (about 15 pounds) of an unknown controlled substance. Rosario and Torres were arrested and taken to the Princeton Police Department for further investigation, according to a press release from Tri-DENT. Authorities said further charges are pending lab results of the other controlled substance.

Administrator: 2 deaths this weekend at La Salle Veterans Home Two residents died this weekend from complications related to COVID-19 at the Illinois Veterans Home in La Salle.

In total, there have been 15 COVID-related deaths since an outbreak began Nov. 1 at the veterans home.

There were 12 additional cases announced Sunday, increasing the number of infected individuals to 93 res-

idents and 90 employees, according to a letter issued Sunday by administrator Angela Mehlbrech.

“We are following the latest medical guidance and are working with state, federal and local health officials to ensure the continued care for all of our residents and testing and protection of anyone potentially exposed,” Mehlbrech wrote.

Anyone who has a loved one affected by the virus can request to visit them in person.

“Please understand this is a risk to your health and safety and though we will provide all the appropriate PPE, we cannot guarantee you will not contract the virus,” Mehlbrech said. “We continue to offer virtual visits, and you can schedule those by calling the Activity Department.”

Lawmakers in the Veterans Affairs Committee have said they would like to investigate the outbreak to better understand it.

Program credits would be transferrable OGLESBY — The Illinois Valley Community College Board approved an Associate of Applied Science degree in Dental Assisting.

“After discussion with the dental assisting advisory board, local dentists, current and past students, it is apparent the AAS in Dental Assisting would be beneficial to future, current and past students from a continuing education and employment perspective,” program coordinator Heather Seghi said.

The 60-credit AAS aligns with dental hygiene program requirements at various Illinois schools and will thus ease transfer to those institutions, said dean of workforce development Shane Lange.

IVCC receives grant to help students from vulnerable populations OGLESBY — Illinois Valley Community College has been awarded more than $130,000 from the Governor’s Emergency Education Relief Grant to enroll, retain and graduate first-generation, low-income and underrepresented students.

Beginning Jan. 14 with the spring semester, the $130,981 GEER Grant will help students transition to college or continue in college toward their educational goal.

The program will award up to $1,000 in assistance to qualifying students. It also features tuition forgiveness and vouchers for necessary supplies such as textbooks and PPE. IVCC will identify, recruit and assist at-risk students who lack reliable digital devices and/or internet connectivity. The program has 20 student laptops to loan and 25 mobile hotspots and allows for the hiring of a specialist to support online learning.

With basketball season in doubt, IHSA invites Pritzker, IDPH to next board meeting

The IHSA Board of Directors met in a virtual update session on Wednesday to review recent developments related to the high school basketball season, which is set to start with practices this coming Monday.

The board announced that it is formally inviting representatives from Gov. JB Pritzker’s office and the Illinois Department of Public Health to meet with the board Nov. 19. Additionally, the IHSA hopes to have representatives from the Illinois Principals Association (IPA), Illinois Association of School Administrators (IASA), the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) and a coalition of nearly 200 school superintendents who recently contacted the governor regarding school sports during the 2020-21 school year.

The IHSA is asking schools that do choose to start practices on Monday to adhere to IDPH’s Level 1 guide-

lines during the COVID-19 pandemic until at least Nov. 19. Level 1 allows for only no-contact practices and training.

“The board hopes to create a dialogue and build a more collaborative relationship with all the entities involved with developing sports policy in our state as everyone tries to navigate through the myriad issues caused by the pandemic,” IHSA executive director Craig Anderson said. “The board’s decision to move forward with the basketball season was not meant to be adversarial.

It was rooted in a desire to receive more direct communication and data from our state partners. (The board) hopes all the groups will see the mutual benefit of increased discourse and be represented at the meeting on Nov. 19.”

The IDPH listed basketball as a medium-risk sport in July, but changed its status to high-risk two weeks ago, just a few days after the IHSA had met with the IDPH and presented what it felt was a work-

able plan to play basketball in a safe environment.

At the time it was announced that basketball was considered high-risk, Pritzker said the sport would be put on hold. The IHSA had already reformed its sports year from three seasons to four – fall (Aug. 10 through Oct. 24), winter (Nov. 16 through Feb. 13), spring (Feb. 16 through May 1) and summer (May 3 through June 26). Three fall sports – football (high), boys soccer (medium) and volleyball (medium) were slotted into the added spring season.

The IHSA, which had received limited feedback from the governor or the IDPH in prior months, stated a day after Pritzker’s announcement that it would go ahead with basketball as a winter sport.

Many school districts, however, have not committed to basketball for insurance reasons. Many insurance companies will not cover events not approved by the IDPH and ISBE, which would leave districts poten-

tially liable for anyone who got sick at a sporting event.

The IHSA has 813 member schools, most of which play basketball. A recent survey revealed that nearly 300 (of 546 school responding) do not plan on starting basketball Monday.

Another 212 were unsure of their status.

The board also cited rising COVID19 cases in the state as a reason for the recommendation for member schools to stick to the IDPH Level 1 guidelines if they start basketball workouts.

“The board recognizes the difficult decisions it has placed on member schools regarding basketball,” Anderson said. “With the limited number of schools to begin their season on Nov. 16, (the board) believes it is prudent to adhere to IDPH guidance as they work with state officials to gain greater clarity on the metrics and mitigations required to conduct certain high school sports throughout the remainder of the 2020-21 school year.”

Bulldog’s is a great stop for regional favorites With the latest news about restaurant guidelines and indoor dining in the La Salle and Bureau counties area, a drive-thru restaurant happens to be perfect timing for this Mystery Diner’s visit.

It wasn’t planned that way, but Bulldog’s serves up plenty of made-to-order favorites from its drive-thru restaurant across the street from the high school in Streator, making it a COVID-aware lunch or dinner destination.

My meal centered on the Trapp’s beef sandwich ($3.99) – which pays homage to the former Streator bar/tavern. It didn’t disappoint. This slowcooked beef sandwich just soaks the bun with its juices, and the beef is stacked on there to get a full taste. Lots of folks in Streator order it by the pound for the holidays or for parties – so there’s a chance you may have had it at a gathering.

The homemade onion rings ($2.79) were amazing. This isn’t your typical run-of-themill fast food side. These sizable onion rings have a batter with a flaky crust, tasting more like the onion blossoms you’d get at a steak house.

Chili was the soup of the day ($2.75) – and I added onion and cheese to my cup. I really enjoyed the bites of seasoned hamburger in it.

I was excited to find out they have 1919 root beer served out of a tap – giving the meal a complete old-fashioned car-hop vibe.

My companion chose the Italian sausage sandwich with green peppers and onions. The Italian sausage is from Harcar’s Meat Market in Streator and was a juicy link, and not too hot or spicy.

Harcar’s also has provided other kinds of bratwursts as specials on the menu – which are all worth trying.

My companion added chili cheese fries as their side. The chili cheese comes in a dipping cup for the wonderful, well-salted fries.

But for now, Bulldog’s is a great option for anyone looking to order via drive-thru, and also seeking more quality than the standard chain places. There are plenty of homemade and regional favorites

to explore on the menu.

IVCC Foundation announces 21st Century Scholar 20 students received a total of $20,250 OGLESBY — Grace McCormick of Peru is the Illinois Valley Community College Foundation’s 21st Century Scholar for 2020.

The 14th annual Society celebration is available online at www. ivcc.edu/foundation and on YouTube at https://www.youtube.com/ watch?v=beZta4G-4OE. McCormick, a 4.0 GPA student, plans a career in nonprofit management and hopes to eventually run an agency aiding the homeless or victims of domestic violence. She plans to transfer to the University of Wisconsin Madison or the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

McCormick, the daughter of John and Holly McCormick, is a PADS homeless shelter volunteer and helped raise more than $2,000 for the agency while in high school.

She is IVCC’s Rotaract president, a Student Ambassador, member of the admission’s recruiting team and a counseling center receptionist/ student worker.

As the 21st Century Scholar, McCormick will receive $3,000. Four other finalists will receive $1,500 each and 15 merit award winners $750 each.

Finalists include Skylar Arwood of Utica, who plans to become a physician. She is a student worker in the biology and chemistry labs and a math and science tutor. A 4.0 student and the daughter of Keith and Darsi Arwood, she finished No. 6 in an L-P graduating class of 263 in 2019. She is a Student Ambassador, blood donor and Oglesby election judge planning to transfer to Northern Illinois University.

Ryan Lane of Peru will study civil engineering at the University of Wisconsin-Platteville or UIUC. After college, he plans to work on public works construction projects and open his own business. The son of Dave and Lori Lane, he is a Student Ambassador who works parttime at Menards and for the city of LaSalle.

Paula Taylor of Granville is planning a career in early childhood education. A librarian and Granville Boy Scout Troop leader, Taylor will transfer to Illinois State University and hopes to teach Pre-K in a public school. She and her husband Troy have three children, daughter Carden and sons Preston and Jonathon.

Reid Tomasson of Oglesby, has a 4.0 GPA, is president of SPAMO (Students of Performing Arts &

Music Organization), is co-editor of the student literary magazine River Currents, a Student Ambassador and performed in IVCC productions of “Elf,” “Broadway Backwards” and “Legally Blonde.” He has worked in 50 community productions and has directed Stage 212 plays. He is the son of Cory and Traci Tomasson. He will transfer to Columbia College in Chicago to major in filmmaking with an emphasis in screenwriting and directing.

Festival 56 will host a virtual cabaret starting on Friday PRINCETON — Festival 56 positions itself on promoting the cornerstones of the theatrical art form and to provide the community with no-barrier access to professional theater. However, since audiences cannot congregate to the theater in recent times, Festival 56 is taking action to continue to be creative in serving our patrons with theater going forward.

Virtual performances continue to be a main source of providing theater to audiences across the globe and Festival 56 will be utilizing these resources to provide theater experiences to the community until they can meet together again at The Grace Performing Arts Center or at their free Shakespeare in the Park at Soldiers and Sailors Park.

As they try to line up a variety of

virtual viewing options leading up to their summer 2021 season, participants are invited to join them for a virtual cabaret that they have themed “Connection.” This cabaret will feature familiar faces to the community with performances from individuals spanning over the last five seasons.

The link to the upcoming cabaret can be found on YouTube and social media pages starting at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 20, and closing at 5 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 22. It’s a donation-based performance, where viewers can give as much or as little as they can provide at this time.

After COVID cancellations in spring, weddings are back on

Brittany Chasteen and now-husband Mitchell Barker of LaMoille initially had the big day set for May 2, but the COVID-19 outbreak and ensuing restrictions forced them to set a rain date. Then another. And then another.

The LaMoille couple decided the nuptials couldn’t be postponed forever and made the fingers-crossed decision to tie the knot July 18, pandemic or no pandemic. They told some 300 invitees to use their best judgment and assured everyone their decisions would in no way be second-guessed. About 100 showed and all were vigilant staying 6 feet apart.

“We actually got really lucky,” the new Mrs. Barker said, though she hastened to add they didn’t merely roll the dice. “We had hand sanitizer everywhere. We had masks. We tried to social distance.”

They tinkered with the wedding-day itinerary, too. The Barkers had initially ordered a dinner buffet but switched to a limited-selection menu so that plates could be brought to the tables in safety.

They also skipped the “dollar dance” held to pad the new couple’s purse.

A rising number of couples in Starved Rock Country have followed suit and are braving trips to the altar despite the again-rising risk of infection. But while some couples such as the Barkers opt to hold nuptials with infection controls in place, others are making vows privately with the promise of a public reception when the pandemic has eased.

Aubrey Smigel and new husband Alex Vlastnik, both natives of Peru, opted for the latter. They held a small wedding and then pledged to hold a big blowout some time in 2021.

“We had already been planning on a small wedding — under 100 people — ­ at a historic home in Peoria,” Smigel said. “In April or May, we saw it wasn’t going to work the way we planned.”

They pushed back the ceremony until phase 4 restrictions made it possible to hold even a small ceremony — “We changed it so many times” — and finally exchanged vows June 26 before fewer than two dozen loved ones in Peoria, where they now reside. To those who otherwise would have been invited, Aubrey and Alex said to watch for a reception next year.

One longtime wedding photographer said she’s seen a mixture of marry-now and marry-later plans from the couples who booked her services.

Annette Barr owns Annette Barr Photography Studio in Ottawa and she said there was “a bit of a panic” when COVID-19 first struck. One client opted to hold a reduced-size wedding while the other married privately and then scheduled a vow-renewal ceremony and large reception, tentatively set for May 2021.

“People are adapting,” Barr said. “The funny

Linda Kelsey, owner of Kelsey’s Kakes in Peru, estimated she’s baked a dozen multi-tier wedding cakes over a span when she’d typically bake 50.

All the April and May weddings orders were rescheduled, she said, but since then several couples have forged ahead with their nuptials.

“I’m finding if they went ahead with the wedding,” Kelsey said, “it’s either in somebody’s backyard or some place out in the country and it’s mostly 50 people or less.”

But another vendor observed that most local engaged couples are in a holding pattern. Dio Rios runs the rental hall for Calvert Council Knights of Columbus 792 in LaSalle and so far he’s gotten mostly cancellations and postponements until 2021.

“I do have one (wedding reception) coming up in December, but we’re going back and forth with the couple and it will depend on what the state does. It’s a lot of stress for the couple because they don’t know what to do or who to invite. I can tell she’s frustrated.”

Any frustrations that Smigel felt were simply obliterated on her wedding day — “It was the best day ever” — but many understanding friends will have the chance to toast the bride and groom some time next year. She and her groom know of many similarly-situated couples.

“We do have some friends who have changed their dates four or five times now,” Smigel said.

Jen Stack of Chicago, formerly of Utica, also is planning a “sequel wedding” — that is, a vowel renewal with a much larger ceremony than she was able to organize amid the pandemic. Stack said she advises other brides and grooms to tem-

per their expectations some if they plan to get hitched amid COVID-19.

“The day most likely will not be what you envisioned, but it will be beautiful,” Stack said. “And it’s about the marriage, not the wedding itself.”

One couple moved the big day up, believing (correctly, as it turned out) that the pandemic would not simply vanish by summer’s end.

Katie March of Oglesby and husband Justin were originally going to marry Sept. 5, during Labor Day weekend, with some 160 invited. However, the spring arrival of the pandemic hindered their planning and they reached a now-or-never crossroads.

“We were starting to run out of time for planning when COVID hit and we were waiting around and waiting around,” Katie said. “We also realized we’d have to either cut our list to 50 people or they’d be afraid to come.

“We didn’t want people to have to choose between supporting us or being safe so we decided to change the date.”

The decision wasn’t made in a vacuum. The vendors and venue operators were as bound by the pandemic as they were and the various postponements forced their hands somewhat.

“They all apologized to us,” Katie said. “They were sorry we had to go through this. We just wanted to get married. We didn’t care.”

Katie and Justin exchanged vows July 18 at an outdoor setting, McPhedran Park in Oglesby, with just 25 in attendance. They did not insist on masks — “We trusted them all to use good judgment and we were outdoors most of the time,” Katie said — but they did get a group photo of everyone in masks. The pandemic is now part of their life story and it seemed fitting to memorialize it.

“I don’t care if it’s the end of the world,” Justin March remembered thinking. “I’m marrying Katie.”
