The power of the bystander Matt Wilhelm uses BMX to teach students how to deflate bullies

BY DAVE COOK news@putnamcountyrecord.com GRANVILLE — Being picked on and intimidated by someone is bad in any situation, but it’s even worse when the target is surrounded by those they know and no one is stepping in to help.

Illinois native and BMX star Matt Wilhelm has been there, and through several appearances at Putnam County (PC) Schools on Nov. 8, he taught students of all ages how they can be someone’s hero by speaking out against what they know isn’t right.

“I talk about bystanders rather than bullies or targets because kids, and even adults, usually think of a bully as being someone else. It can be a friend and bullying is also

often done in front of others,” he said.

Wilhelm has turned his fame as a stunt-rider into a career as a motivational, anti-bullying speaker who performs at more than 300 schools a year and also impresses anyone who’s seen him while he’s on two wheels (and he’s often just on one).

Through his BMX flatland riding, he’s achieved fame during his semi-finals appearance on “America’s Got Talent”; won $25,000 on television’s “30 Seconds to Fame”; set a Guinness World Record; medaled three times at the X-Games; was a silver medalist at the World Championships; is a two-time United States National Champion; was fea-

tured in the award winning documentary “Stop Bullying: Speak Up” with President Obama; has starred in popular YouTube videos; and has been the subject of an award-winning photo series.

His visit to Putnam County included daytime performances at the primary and elementary schools and an evening performance at PCHS. The day was the result of a collaboration between the school district, the Putnam County Educational Foundation and the PC Parent Advisory Committee.

Those attending the performance at the high school also had a chance to win one of the two bicycles donated by the PC Rotary. The lucky winners were thirdgrade student Veronika Mack and fifth-grade student Valeria Villagomez.

Early in Wilhelm’s performance, he tells a childhood story of how he was at a local dirt track to ride his bike when he became surrounded by bullies. Teased for his small size, poor health, speech impediment and big ears, they knocked him off of his bike and down a hill.

“Falling down the hill hurt, but it didn’t hurt as bad as it did to look up and see everyone on top of the hill looking down and laughing at me,” he told the students.

He was reluctant to return to the track, but after someone from a different group of riders who had seen what had happened approached him with an offer to ride with their friends, Matt felt more comfortable riding.

“He became my hero that day and because I was with them, the other group never picked on me again. All it took was for one person to come forward and they no longer bothered me,” he said.

Wilhelm was asked how things have changed since he began his motivational speaking career.

“Social media, Facebook wasn’t around then. Bullying was usually just around school or other places, but now it follows you home and you can’t really get away from it. I recommend to read out loud anything you’re

• Bullying is when someone hurts you on purpose repeatedly.

• Being called a name once isn’t bullying. It becomes bullying when it’s done over and over again.

• Not letting other kids play with your group of friends is a form of bullying.

• If you feel like someone is always trying to do something to hurt you on purpose, tell a teacher, parent, or adult.

• Constantly excluding someone is a form of emotional bullying.

• Many bullying situations are hidden by the phrase “Just joking” or “Just kidding.”

• Pay attention to the people around you. How are they feeling? Are the words being said making them feel more valuable or less valuable?

• The students at your school will remember you. The only question is how will they remember you? Will you be remembered as a hero, a bystander, or a villain? about to post online and then wait a minute to see how it makes you feel,” he said.

He also taught the lesson of perseverance through his story about placing dead last during his first X-Games appearance. The following year he returned ... and won.

“You can’t give up, if you really want something it takes a lot of practice and hard work,” he said of his more than 10 years of stunt riding experience.

one going home and trying what they’d seen him do.

“As with everything, you have to start with the basics and build from there. No trick is too easy, don’t skip anything. You’re going to fail and you’re going to fall, but you have to get up and keep at it. If you really want something, you’re going to have to work hard for it,” Wilhelm said.

His speaking engagements alternate between easily relatable and often humorous stories and demon-

Driving under the influence arrests totaled 8. Troopers issued a total of 288 traffic citations and 528 written warnings to motorists during the month.

District 17 troopers handled 46 traffic crashes within the three-county area of LaSalle, Bureau and Putnam.

There was one fatal crash handled by District 17 troopers.

• A hero is an ordinary person who does an extraordinary thing.

• Think of your words like money.

Before you speak, think to yourself, “Are my words going to make someone feel more valuable or less valuable?”

• Heroes are kind and do the right thing.

• The main ways to be a hero: Speak up, be a friend, take a risk, take action.

• Words are more powerful than fists, so don’t fight. Speak up! Tattling is when you are trying to get someone in trouble. Reporting is when you’re trying to get someone out of trouble.

• Be a friend to someone without many friends.

• Being popular doesn’t make you a hero.

• Bystanders can make a bad situation worse because by saying nothing, they’re saying, “It’s okay.”

• The bystander effect takes place when people in the crowd don’t help.

• Bystanders have the power.

• People become bystanders because they’re afraid to act first, or they’re afraid of what others will think of them. It’s normal to be afraid to act first, but heroes have courage.

• Get a group of students to stand together against the bully.

• Offer private support to those being targeted.

POLICE REPORTS District 17 troopers handle calls in August

LASALLE — Illinois State Police District 17 announced that during the month of August 2017, troopers handled 1,023 calls for service and assistance. Of these calls, 117 were to help motorists whose vehicles were disabled on area highways.

Good or bad, it’s money down the drain Village to test sewers to combat flooding and will also be pushing some homeowners to finally make change

BY DAVE COOK news@putnamcountyrecord.com GRANVILLE — According to the village board, some Granville homes have waited roughly 40 years for a connection to an improved sewer line on the other side of their property. And for the owners of those homes, time will soon be running out.

The village continues to have to make repairs to a line in increasingly poor condition, and it’s one they’ve wanted to abandon for several years.

But, after a sinkhole developed near a driveway, the village once again had to spend money to make repairs.

The board announced during its Nov. 7 meeting that only one of the homes in the 500 block of West Main had made the con-

nection to the new line as requested years ago.

“They’re going to find out it’s gotten much more expensive, and they’ll no longer be able to get the deal they were originally offered at that time,” board member Lucian Verda said of those homeowners who hadn’t made the change.

The board agreed to table the discussion until Brad Popurella, the village attorney, would be present to give legal advice on how to proceed to force those homeowners to make the change.

Smoke testing After being presented with a written estimate, the board approved Chamlin & Associate’s Mike Richetta to schedule three days of smoke testing for the village’s sanitary sew-

ers. The testing will be an effort to find any problems, including improper connections, to help combat future flooding such as the village experienced earlier in the year.

The estimate is expected to allow for the testing of approximately 1,800 to 2,000 feet of lines per day at a total cost of $4,725.

Richetta will be creating a map of areas to test, which will include parts of East and West Main Street, Colby Street and Archie Avenue. Richetta will also have other areas ready to test if time allows. Both village officials and residents will be notified in advance of the testing.

Public works Valves and piping repairs are scheduled to be made at the village water plant, and the board began

discussion to address the ongoing electrical problems the plant faces after every lightning storm.

Public Works employee Dan Siegmann reported a leaking water line on South Street, west of the water building, had been repaired as had another line in the Lincolnshire Subdivision.

He also reported he’ll be working with Richetta to use a camera to inspect the sewers in problematic areas of Lincolnshire to further identify causes of increased flooding.

Siegmann said the department had completed its spray-patch road repairs for the year.

The Granville Public Works department also recently planted 42 trees throughout the village, with an additional three provided by the Putnam

County Rotary. Eighteen more are scheduled to be planted in the spring.

He also informed the board a faulty fire hydrant near the 300 block of South McCoy Street will be replaced next spring at a cost of $20,000, and that the fire department was aware it was currently unusable. Replacement of the hydrant became complicated after it was discovered that the underground portion of the existing hydrant was encased in concrete when originally installed.

In other board news Brandon McNeil, of Hopkins & Associates, presented the results of the yearly audit and reported the village was “in compliance with all accounting standards and has a strong cash balance in all

accounts.”

The village had a $3,500 decrease in Motor Fuel Tax funds, and street maintenance costs increased by $2,000, a situation that will almost certainly get worse after the state budget significantly slashed funding for road projects.

Board members also began discussion about reducing the amount of funds donated to various causes after learning they had donated $8,600 last year, roughly $2,000 more than they’d donated through the previous few years.

The board attributed the increase to receiving a higher number of donation requests.

Rather than denying the additional requests in the future, the board discussed approving them, but with smaller amounts.

PC Food Pantry credits success to community support

help and added that most of the pantry’s clients have two working parents.

“We have lots of hard working parents who depend on us for help, it’s just they’re not making enough to get by,” she said.

While many pantries assemble Thanksgiving Day baskets for their clients, the Putnam County Food Pantry concentrates on Christmas and it’s become a countywide effort.

All Putnam County churches work together each year to provide the many items needed to assemble Christmas baskets which contain food for both a holiday family dinner and breakfast; gift wrapped toys and clothing for each child; and a gift and clothing item for seniors.

“What’s so amazing about our residents of Putnam County is that all we have to do is put the word out and it seems like the next day we’ve got what we need,” Reno said.

The pantry also makes good use of their several freezers and is capable of storing large quantities of meat. In previous years hunters have donated venison, and last year a local student donated an entire processed hog he’d raised.

Reno said the pantry

to approximately 25 local families a week.

Along with food, the pantry is also able to provide families with toiletries, cleaning and laundry supplies and other personal and household items.

Along with donated items and money from individuals and community, church and school groups, the pantry receives regular support from PC Foods, Hennepin Food Mart, the WalMart Distribution Center and area food banks.

“The Putnam County FFA students recently did their annual canvassing of our communities for food donations and we’re always so impressed with the amount of food they collect,” Reno said.

She also said while donated items are always welcome, money is equally important, as it allows them to purchase increased amounts when they visit food banks.

One local mother of several who uses the pantry’s services said she doesn’t know what she’d do if it wasn’t available.

“It’s so hard to make ends meet. It’s hard to keep them fed, especially when they’re not in school,” she added.

Reno said no one is judged when they need

Residents of Putnam County, however, have shown a spirit of generosity which Gayle Reno, the president of the Putnam County Food Pantry, said is vital to their mission.

“We couldn’t do what we do without the wonderful support of our Putnam County communities and our amazing volunteers who do so much for us,” Reno said.

Those households needing assistance are able to visit the pantry located beneath Granville’s United Church of Christ on Saturday mornings and Reno said the pantry provides monthly support

OTTAWA — William “Bill” R. Mix, 75, of Ottawa died Sunday, Nov. 5, 2017.

Bill was born Jan. 27, 1942, in Lincoln, Ill., to Robert “Tom” and Pauline (Snow) Mix. He married Joyce Kostellic on Oct. 30, 1965, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Granville.

He graduated from Hopkins High School and received his master’s degree in industrial tech at Illinois State University. Bill was a teacher at LaSalle – Peru Area Vocational School. He organized and initiated the areawide automotive class. Bill and his brother Jim owned and operated Mix Automotive “The Eliminator Shop” in LaSalle. He worked at J&L Steel Plant in Hennepin and was a foreman on the galvanizing line.

Bill was superintendent of maintenance at Ottawa Silica. He was also a manager at Dayton Hydro Electric Plant. He retired from LaSalle County Highway Department.

Bill was a member of the Northern Illinois Archaeological Society, where he served as president. He helped establish the Illinois Valley Headers car club in Standard. Bill was also on the Standard Rescue and Civil Defense for Putnam County.

One of his proudest achievements was that he and his wife, Joyce, established in 1989, the present Mix Trading Post in Utica. Family will continue one of his proudest achievements.

He is survived by his wife, Joyce of Ottawa; four sons, Lt. Col. Timothy (Yvonne) Mix of Georgia, Tom (Jacqueline) Mix of Utica, Terry (Lucina) Mix of Ottawa and Tracy (Jamie) Mix of Utica; one daughter, Janet Mix of Ottawa; one sister, Betty Nuske of Hennepin; three brothers, James (Kathy) Mix of Spring Valley, David (the late Mary Jane) Mix of Peoria and John (Sara) Mix of Virginia; 12 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one granddaughter, Victoria.

PERU — Sylvia M. Hall, 89, formerly of Hennepin, died Sunday, Nov. 5, 2017, at Heritage Manor in Peru.

Sylvia was born on March 22, 1928, in Helenville, Wis., to Harry and Edith (Splittsgerber) Carrier. She married Arvin Tearl “Bunk” Hall on Nov. 8, 1947. Tearl preceded her in death on Jan. 28, 1996.

She graduated from Hennepin High School.

Sylvia was a certified CNA at Heritage Manor in Peru. She worked at Westclox for many years.

Sylvia loved to read and enjoyed spending time with her family. She was very active with her church and their activities.

She received the Citizen of the Year Award in 1994 for the village of Hennepin.

Survivors include her son, Terry (Vicki) Hall of Peru; three grandchildren, David Hall, Adam Hall and Brianna Hall; and one great-grandson, Evan Hall.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, “Tearl”; and one sister, Norma Story.

A memorial gathering was held Friday, Nov. 10, at the Dysart-Cofoid Funeral Chapel in Granville with the Rev. Carl Hammer officiating. Cremation rites have been accorded. Burial will be at a later date at Riverside Cemetery in Hennepin. Visitation was held prior to the services.

PRINCETON — Audrey Opal Herrett, 98, of Princeton passed away Friday, Nov. 10, 2017, at Perry Memorial Hospital in Princeton.

Audrey was born on April 9, 1919, in Henry to Raymond and Lela (Euard) Thomas.

She married Earl Reinhert, he was missing in action in World War II. She married Lloyd Herrett in 1951, he passed away in 1985.

She was a graduate of the University of Miami with a major in education and music. She taught piano and violin in her home for years.

She was a member of the Putnam Christian Church. She sang for many years in the choir for the Methodist church in California.

She is survived by her daughter, Sucanne Peters of Woodruff, Wis.; three cousins; three grandchildren, Scott Smith, Jennifer (Nick) Crocker and Robin (Dan) Davis; six great-grandchildren, Amber, Daphnee and Sterling Smith, Luke and Dash Crocker, and Audrey Joy Davis; one brother, Jerry (Alice) Yarrington of Princeton; two nephews, Barry Bernardi and Jay Yarrington; and one niece, Amy Boers.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husbands; and her sister, Faye Thomas Bernardi.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 13, in the Putnam Christian Church with the Rev. Terry Broady officiating.

Interment followed in the Putnam Cemetery.

Her family received friends from 1 p.m. until the time of services Tuesday at the church.

Memorials may be directed to the Putnam Christian Church.

BY LYLE GANTHER news@putnamcountyrecord.com HENNEPIN — A Putnam County grand jury on Thursday returned an indictment against Clifford Andersen, 67, of Standard for the murder of his sister-in-law, Deborah K. Dewey, 62, of Ladd, who was last seen alive on Aug. 22, 2016, in Spring Valley.

During the search of the residence and surrounding property, investigators exhumed a body from a shallow grave located in the yard of the residence. The body was later confirmed to be that of Dewey.

An intense year-long investigation by the Illinois State Police led to the newest indictment, according to a press release issued Thursday.

Bond, ... bird bond

ecently, I have been dabbling in the hobby of aviculture. I say dabbling, but birds have become my obsession.

Last January I didn’t even own one bird. The most recent count of my indoor population has me tallyCOMMENTARY ing 38 avian friends in my house. In my defense, 12 of those birds are not Lori mine. I am just babysitting. (Its a weak argument, but it’s all I’ve got.) I Boekeloo have gotten very curious looks from people who have learned of my newfound delight.

I simply explain that for a year, I was the only human occupant in my house, and I didn’t have anyone here to tell me no. My birds are caged in pairs with the intention of breeding them and making new birds. I love creating life and encouraging it however I can. It’s all a learning process and I’m finding out so many new and exciting things. One of the interesting things to me is the bonding process.

In order to successfully breed, lay eggs and raise babies, a pair of birds must bond. The male and female display such behaviors as preening one another, calling to one another and they become very anxious when they are apart from one another. The best chance at successfully bonding birds is to put them together when they are very young, and raise them together.

Don’t get me wrong, there are birds who will mate with a variety of partners and successfully raise babies, but to watch a bonded pair preen and cuddle is a thing of beauty. You can see the caring and love they have for one another. During breeding season, they will take on a foe of any size together, knowing they have one another to fight by their side. My pair of conures attacked me with badger-like vigor when they were sitting on eggs and protecting their nest. My bloody fingers are proof that they were ferocious in their attempts to keep me away from their offspring.

I had a male finch whose partner died unexpectedly and the poor guy called and called for her for days until I found him another partner. It was sad to hear his cries and know that his little birdy heart had been broken.

He missed his companion and mourned the loss.

It is also possible to put older birds together and have them bond, but the success rate isn’t as high and you might end up with a pair who are just buddies and never make the Chuck Woolery “love connection.”

Those birds can have just as strong of a bond, but the percentage rate of success isn’t quite as high.

Isn’t it like that with relationships to Jesus? We need to be bonded to Him in order to fulfill our purpose — to go out and spread the Word. Our chances of making a strong bond are best if we are introduced to Him early in our lives by going to Sunday School and Bible School and making Him a part of our every day habits and routine. Early exposure isn’t foolproof, but chances are much better.

Many people don’t encounter His love until later in life, and they can still find that special bond. If we are truly bonded to our relationship with Him, we seek Him. We call out to Him. We become anxious when we are apart from Him. We know He is by our side to fight our foes, no matter their size. If for some reason, we lose our way and become separated, we mourn the loss of His presence in our lives until we are reunited. He is our partner and will fight for us and with us to the bitter end. So seek that bond ... that God bond.

The party’s over; what will replace it?

I

n 1972, the late political writer David Broder authored “The Party’s Over,” in which he chronicled the decline and pending demise of American political parties. I think the demise has just about arrived.

As Broder saw it, the two major parties long provided critical, understandable, helpful cues to American voters about party positions.

Roughly speaking, Democrats were for the working man and Republicans for Main Street businessmen. No longer. Candidates for office rarely even name their party in commercials.

In a recent column in this paper, I called for a third, moderate party, out of my frustration that, on the one hand, the GOP has been hijacked by an incoherent mix of the Far Right and now populist (at least in rhetoric) Trump-tweeted platform.

As for the Democrats, a number of readers were incensed with my admittedly clumsy, at best, characterization of their party leaders. I should have simply said the Democrat leadership is largely captive of urban minorities plus old-line liberals, often elitist, who think that is where most attention should be focused.

The Dems seem to have forgotten the hard-working, white middle and struggling classes that for decades made up the bulwark for Democrats’ successes, from FDR to LBJ. For example, the Democratic Party is now irrelevant in my rural county. Indeed, there is no longer any formal Democratic Party there.

A very brief history of parties.

George Washington decried factions (parties), yet they were inevitable in a new system that had to organize around like-minded men (at that time, indeed white and property owning) to contest elections.

From Jefferson and Hamilton, then Jackson, came what would be our Democratic and Republican parties. A Whig Party contested

UNDERSTANDING ILLINOIS Jim Nowlan elections with some success in the 1830s-’50s, yet fell apart when the party couldn’t resolve its differences over the issue of extension of slavery. This offered an opening for a new Republican Party, quite grassroots initially, that grew from nothing to the presidency between 1854 and 1860.

By the Gilded Age of the late 1800s, plutocrats dominated the GOP, and urban bosses were often representing – and controlling the politics of – the working and immigrant classes.

There were also small-city political machines. Republican Len Small of Kankakee, twice governor (1921-28), ran his county and then the state with an iron hand.

Remnants of that political operation remained through the recent career of former Gov. George Ryan, also of Kankakee.

Parties were held together by union or business philosophies, respectively, plus the glue of patronage jobs (jobs awarded by a political patron, such as an urban boss or governor) for precinct workers who linked themselves directly to voters. For my master’s thesis on the Illinois Republican Party of the 1950s-’60s, I found that at one time, 82 of the state’s 102 GOP county chairmen held state jobs courtesy of a Republican governor.

The push by reformers for selection of state government employees on merit and court decisions that prohibited job largesse based on party affiliation have largely eliminated patronage jobs.

The resource that patronage provided parties has now been replaced, ever more expansively, by the money of mega-millionaires.

So, today, party organizations are

shells of their past importance, and big-money candidates use parties almost solely as labels by which to get onto the ballot.

This coming year in Illinois, for example, two billionaires are spending hundreds of millions – at current spending rates – to win the governorship a year from now.

Incumbent Gov. Bruce Rauner is also funding the campaigns of favored legislators, a job traditionally left to the candidates themselves (in my era) and more recently by legislative leaders who raised money for their troops.

In the past, when party organizations helped win elections, a wannabe candidate was asked: How much work have you done for the party, and how loyal have you been?

Now the question is: How much money do you have or can you raise?

Comparison to the Roman Republic of more than two millennia ago might appear a bit melodramatic. Yet I find it hard not to see similarities then with today.

That is, the transition from the yeoman Roman farmer of about 500 B.C., who reputedly volunteered to his tribe/nation’s success, to the decadent final days of the Republic four centuries later.

By 100 B.C. or so, senators of massive wealth would buy their elections as consuls, and later hire their own armies. Goodbye Republic, hello Emperor.

So, what to do today? Can grassroots groups conceivably use the ubiquitous, inexpensive – and viral – Internet to organize, fund and advocate for, say, a new party on a basis competitive with that of big money?

And what would that party be? For example, moderates are notorious for failure to ignite passions the way advocates at polar extremes can.

These questions haunt me.

We want more from government than we’ll pay

A

s Republicans in Congress move forward on their tax plan, it’s worth remembering one thing: whatever the legislative particulars, keep your eye on the plan’s impact on the federal debt. Our debt load is already worrisome. It’s almost certainly going to get worse.

There are a lot of different ways to characterize our fiscal situation at the federal level. We spend too much. We borrow too much.

We spend more than we take in.

We don’t tax enough to cover our expenses. However you describe it, the plain truth is that Americans want more from their government than they’re willing to pay for.

This is not new, but at some point it will become unsustainable – we just don’t know exactly when.

One common measure of the debt problem is to compare the total federal debt to our gross domestic product, or GDP. This basically measures whether a country’s economy is healthy enough to carry its debt burden. When Presidents Carter and Reagan were speaking out against the dangers of our large national debt, it stood at around 30 percent of GDP. Today it stands at 103 percent.

For years, people who worry about the debt have warned that this trend could not continue; it’s turned out that the economy is far

COMMENTARY Lee H. Hamilton more resilient than many of us thought. And so the fear of debt has faded. This is too bad.

The problem is that regardless of what our political leaders say about deficits and debt, their actions tend to belie their words: they continue expensive federal programs and lavish tax breaks on favored constituencies without regard to the long-term fiscal impact. I’ve come to believe that deficits will likely continue – with increasing debt – until some financial crisis focuses our attention on the serious imbalance between our taxes and spending. There is little real seriousness about trying to solve our fiscal issues, or real appetite to get our spending under control and use taxes to get a handle on our finances.

Which brings us to the current move for tax “reform.” Tax reform can have several meritorious goals, including establishing a more equitable tax system, encouraging economic growth, and imposing fiscal restraint. What I don’t see in the current debate is much more than

lip service to any of these goals. To achieve even a measure of fiscal restraint you can reform entitlements, which are the chief drivers of increased spending; you can moderate or cut defense spending; and you can increase taxes. Some politicians like to add a fourth – becoming more efficient – but while helpful, that won’t have the necessary impact.

You’ve heard a lot already about how we need tax cuts to unleash economic growth. But the history of tax cuts makes clear there’s only a tenuous connection between the two.

What always worries me about tax debate on Capitol Hill is that it begins with a lot of talk about reform, and usually ends with a lot of talk about tax cuts. This isn’t surprising. Tax cuts are popular. Tax reform, which helps some people and hurts others, is politically treacherous.

So as you watch the debate on Capitol Hill, use your discrimination and judgment. Tax cuts can often help the economy, but not if they balloon deficits and the debt.

If that happens, they’ll eventually end up lowering growth and slowing the economy.

Upcoming events at the Hennepin Park District HENNEPIN — The Hennepin Park District will sponsor Movie Mania in its community room on their 82-inch HD big screen TV on Friday, Nov. 23. They will show three movies.

At 9 a.m. they will show “Cars 3,” at 11:30 a.m. they will show “Leap” and at 1:30 p.m. they will show “Lion King 1 1/2.” Participants can attend any or all of the movies they choose. Popcorn and a beverage will be served during the films.

BLOOMINGTON — University of Illinois Extension Marshall-Putnam Master Gardeners, received awards at the 2017 Illinois Master Gardener Convention held in Bloomington. Sharon Gallup from Magnolia received the sustained excellence award and Barb Dahlbach of Toluca received an outstanding master gardener award.

With more than 3,200 master gardeners currently in the state of Illinois, only 10 received the sustained excellence award and 36 receive the outstanding master gardener award.

This is the fourth year in a row the Marshall-Putnam Master Gardeners have been recognized by the university as an outstanding organization. According to both Gallup and Dahlbach, winning these awards would not have happened without the entire group of master gardeners and master naturalist of the counties working together.

Gallup received the outstanding master gardener award in 2016 and continues to be the foundation rock of the Marshall-Putnam Master Gardeners and Master Naturalist.

She enjoys giving her time to help teach the youth of the counties. She has been instrumental in teaching the classes for the lettuce bed program in the local schools and programs at the Marshall-Putnam Fair.

Last year, she volunteered more than 300 hours to the master gardener program thus making her one of the elite 10 master gardeners in

Cirilo graduates from basic military training

SAN ANTONIO, Texas — U.S. Air Force Airman 1st Class Sergio Cirilo graduated from basic military training at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, San Antonio, Texas.

Cirilo completed an intensive, eight-week program that included training in military discipline and studies, Air Force core values, physical fitness, and basic warfare principles and skills. Airmen who complete basic training also earn four credits toward an associate in applied science degree through the Community College of the Air Force.

Cirilo is the son of Berta and Jose Cirilo of Granville. He is a 2012 graduate of Putnam County High School in Granville and earned an associate degree in 2015 from Illinois Valley Community College in Oglesby.

Nomination deadline Nov. 24 OmniArts, an organization dedicated to supporting local artists and art organizations, is seeking nominations from the community for its third annual Omni Honors Awards Gala in April 2018.

“The Omni Honors Awards Gala is a celebration of the finest in local music, dance, theatre, patrons and visual arts in April,” Bill Jankowski, executive director of OmniArts, said, “but the selection process begins now.”

The gala will feature an awards ceremony with live performances.

“This is one event anyone who values art, music, drama and dance in our local communities should not miss,” Jankowski said. “It will be a very memorable day for all.”

PRINCETON

Donna Braida retires after 45 years at PMH PRINCETON — Donna Braida officially retired Oct. 20 after 45 years at Perry Memorial Hospital in Princeton.

Braida began as a volunteer candy striper in 1970, caring for patients during their stays that at times were measured in weeks, not days. Her official PMH employment began in dietary in September 1972, and in 1976, she received her associate’s degree in nursing.

She worked a variety of positions as a RN, including surgical, medical, pediatrics and ICU departments. LCN and PMH formed a partnership in 1996, and Braida became LCN’s occupational health nurse. Her job at LCN came to a close in 2012, and Braida has been PMH’s occupation health nurse until her retirement.

Train fair and farm toy show planned Saturday PRINCETON — The 11th annual Northern Illinois Model Train Fair and Farm Toy show will return to the Bureau County Fairgrounds in Princeton on Saturday, Nov. 18. Show hours are 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
