The students of Putnam County Elementary School in Hennepin honored the service of local veterans during a commemorative Veterans Day assembly on Monday morning. Students selected by the teacherled “Character Counts” committee each read a short essay about the importance of what veterans provide our country. Also, U.S. Air Force Tech Sgt. Ken Arndt was the guest speaker; songs were sung; and everyone in attendance was invited to view the school’s “Wall of Honor” on which students had listed why they were thankful for the service of veterans. Henderson admits his guilt, gets 53-year prison sentence Pleads guilty to January killing of Diamond Bradley of Spring Valley

BY DAVE COOK news@putnamcountyrecord.com HENNEPIN — While it was expected Public Defender Roger Bolin would file motions the afternoon of Nov. 6 in Putnam County Court for the upcoming bench trial of Richard A. Henderson for the murder of 16-year-old Diamond Bradley, the plea deal sentencing Henderson to 53 years was a surprise.

“The talk of negotiations really picked up last night, but we didn’t know until today whether he’d take the deal or not,” Putnam County State’s Attorney Christina Judd-Mennie said after the hearing.

Henderson, 26, of Standard, pleaded guilty to one count of first-degree murder, a Class M felony. The state dropped the remaining charges.

Mennie said the state would have sought a motion stating the crime was “brutal and heinous,” which would have had Henderson facing a sentence of 20 years to natural life in the Illinois Department of Corrections if the case had gone to trial and Henderson had been convicted.

Judge Stephen A. Kouri, before discussing the terms of the deal, asked Henderson about his education. Henderson told Kouri he has a 10th-grade education and no GED, but that he understood he would have to serve 100 percent of his sentence followed by a mandatory three years of supervised release. He will get credit for the 275 days served in pre-trial custody.

Diamond Bradley, 16, of Spring Valley was last seen by her family on Jan. 23. She was reported missing the next day and was found stabbed to death alongside a rural Putnam County road on Jan. 27.

Henderson was taken into custody on Feb. 5 after investigators linked him to Bradley through interviews, surveillance footage, and cell phone data.

Mennie previously said the prosecution was well prepared for a trial and that there was “an abundance of evidence.” Both sides expected a trial to last only three to four days.

He will serve 53 years in prison. The plea agreement avoids a bench trial that had been scheduled for Dec. 17. sheriff ’s deputy would have testified Henderson had picked up Diamond Bradley on or about Jan. 24, 2018 and taken her to the road where her body was Diamond later found.

The prosecution Bradley would have also entered video evidence taken from surveillance cameras linking Henderson to Bradley and their route together; cell phone evidence from the FBI linking their cell phone locations on Jan. 24; as well as a knife, the murder weapon Henderson used to stab Bradley several times. He then hid the weapon in an ash pit at the commercial greenhouse where he worked in Granville.

Though Henderson was initially charged with concealment of a homicidal death, a Class 3 felony with a sentencing range of 2 to 5 years, Bolin successfully got that charge dropped during a Sept. 6 hearing.

Bolin argued the 120-day limit of the Speedy Trial Act has been exceeded, and Judd-Mennie agreed to drop the charge to focus on the murder charges.

The additional three first-degree murder charges were entered on Aug. 30, and each carried concurrent $1 million bonds. Henderson had previously entered pleas of not guilty on all counts.

Bradley, spoke on the stand to share the impact the killing of her daughter has had on her family.

She said she had initially moved to the Illinois Valley for a better life for her children, but now that dream was gone, and that her family no longer wanted to be here because of the painful memories of Diamond.

“I have two other children, 14 and 11, and they can’t sleep at night. I can’t work the way I used to, and we’re all just trying to get through this so we can get on with our lives. Diamond was my everything. My house is so quiet, she was everything to us, and now it’s all been taken away from us. I brought my children here for a better life, not something like this. I don’t want to be here anymore, but we’re going to make it through this and go on,” she said, tearfully.

Mennie said it was the family’s decision to allow Henderson the negotiated deal and that they had been deeply involved through the entire legal process. “This was their decision, and they really needed the closure. I can’t imagine being in their place,” she said.

Mennie credited the many local law enforcement agencies who, she said, worked seamlessly together and “really nailed the case down for us.”

Bolin said Henderson gave no indication why he became interested the prior week in a potential plea deal, adding, “This was his decision.”

news@putnamcountyrecord.com HENNEPIN — Putnam County voters overwhelmingly voted against a proposed tax increase in Tuesday’s general election.

Slightly more than three-fourths of voters (75.22 percent) chose “No” on their ballots in regard to a proposition to increase the current corporate tax rate of .37 percent to .67 percent.

At the .37 rate, the county collects approximately $553,000 a year. The increased rate would have collected about $1.04 million for the county’s General Fund.

“We’ve heard the voters. The corporate rate will remain at the maximum amount of .37,” Putnam County Board Chairman Steve Malavolti said.

“In the meantime, the county board will have to look at other areas and ways to increase revenue and to reduce spending. As I’ve said before, all areas will be looked at. The board will do their best in working through this situation and will continually explore all options available. There are many hard deci-

Incumbent Putnam County Board members Steve Malavolti and Luke Holly retained their seats on the board and will be joined by Charles Lenkaitis.

“Now is when the hard work starts. We’ve got a lot of important decisions to make,” Lenkaitis said the morning after the election.

Lenkaitis received the most votes with 28.15 percent; Holly received 25.03 percent; Malavolti received 23.63 percent; and Brad Popurella trailed with 23.2 percent.

“I would like to thank all those who trusted me enough to vote for me, and I wish our winners all of the best of luck,” Popurella said after the votes were counted.

Statewide, Mendoza was victorious.

State senator for the 38th Legislative District Incumbent Sue Rezin received 58.6 percent of the local vote, compared to 41.4 percent for Heidi Henry. Districtwide, Rezin was victorious.

Representative in the General Assembly for the 76th District Locally, 53.1 percent of voters chose Lance Yednock compared to the 46.9 percent who voted for Jerry Long. Districtwide, Yednock was victorious.

Attorney General Putnam County voters gave Erika Harold 54.4 percent of local votes compared to Kwame Raoul’s 42.4 percent and Bubba Harsy’s 3.3 percent.

Statewide, Raoul was victorious.

Secretary of State Jesse White easily won the Putnam County vote with 60.6 percent compared to Jason Helland’s 37.4 percent and Steve Dutner’s 2.1 percent. Statewide, White was victorious.

Treasurer Jim Dodge won 49.1 percent of PC votes while Michael W. Frerichs received 46.5 percent and Michael Leheney received 4.4 percent.

Judge retention Paul Gilfillan, Kevin W. Lyons, and Kate Gorman were all chosen by PC voters to be retained as judges of the 10th Judicial Circuit Court.

Princeton Elementary School District’s $35 million referendum The two Putnam County residents voting on the referendum to issue $35 million in bonds to fund the construction of a new, 109,900-square-foot building for grades 3 through 8 in Princeton split their votes, one voting in favor, one opposed.

The referendum was defeated 51.9 percent to 48.1 percent in Bureau County.

Credit or blame now falls totally on Illinois Dems They’ll control all government facets in Land of Lincoln

A

s a result of the election Tuesday, Democrats are totally — I mean totally — in charge of Illinois government.

Gov.-elect J.B. Pritzker won a resounding 15-point victory, and his party achieved more than three-fifths majorities in both the House and Senate. And the Illinois Supreme Court continues to have a Democratic majority, as has been the case continuously since 1962.

This offers an unusual opportunity in Illinois for voters to place credit or blame, with some clarity, over the coming four years with one political party.

For most of the past half century, Illinois government has been divided, with Republicans often holding the governorship and Dems one or both chambers of the Legislature.

Even when Democrats controlled both the executive and legislative branches under Blagojevich and Quinn (2002-2014), these governors were often at odds with their legislative leaders.

In contrast, under parliamentary governments (think Canada and the United Kingdom), government is unified. Those nations do not have separate executives and legis-

So, it is easier for voters to assess blame or credit in parliamentary systems, as it will be in Illinois over the coming term of Gov.-elect Pritzker.

Legislatures in the U.S. rarely lead. Indeed, Illinois House Speaker Mike Madigan’s power has been almost totally negative. He can block any piece of legislation, but he cannot necessarily pass anything he wants.

Then how should Pritzker lead?

I think it is fair to say that expectations for Pritzker are modest, at best. He didn’t overwhelm voters in the campaign with his knowledge of how to govern or of a vision for our state. This is probably a plus for Pritzker going forward.

My unsolicited guidance to the incoming governor: “Do not think about how your actions will affect chances for a second term. Whatever you accomplish will be done in your first year in office. If you start off by equivocating because of how an action might affect voter support in the

future, you are doomed to failure.”

Illinois has a careerist political culture. That is, many are in politics for a career and pension benefits. It is human nature for such folks to want to do things for voters (spending programs) and not do things to people (raise taxes).This has led Illinois into a deep fiscal hole.

Because of this human nature, the state has been running a fiscal deficit (spending more than taking in) of roughly $2 billion to $3 billion a year, on average, for decades.

To address this fiscal problem, Pritzker has proposed a progressive income tax (higher rates for higher incomes).

And while I share the concerns of some of my friends that the top 1 percent is snarfing nearly all new wealth and using much of the money to control elections — and thus democracy — the idea of a progressive income tax at this time in Illinois is terrible.

The Illinois business climate is viewed as worst in the nation by most business leaders, even with all our incredible economic strengths. The message that we are going to worsen that picture by piling more taxes onto entrepreneurs and job creators is destructive.

We can batten down the hatches on spending a bit tighter than we already have, to save some budget money, and tweak some taxes, without raising rates, to close the defi-

cit. And we should build on that by laying out a plan for predictable budgets and taxes into the future, knowledge that business craves for its planning purposes.

Labor unions are expected to have a big say in the Pritzker administration, because they pulled out all the stops to defeat Gov. Rauner. These leaders will have to be responsible. They should, for example, come to the table to help figure out how to stave off collapse of many municipal police and fire pension funds, as well as those for state employees.

In effect, I am calling for pragmatic steps to send signals that Illinois is, step by step, going to bounce back over time. Pie in the sky, grandiose plans that sound fetching but will fall of their own weight should be avoided at all costs.

The “Loyal Opposition” (Republican Party) should mount its own clear program for how it would solve our fiscal problems. And “cutting waste and corruption,” good as it sounds to voters who don’t understand our budget woes, won’t cut it.

Friends might observe that my suggestions will never be followed.

So be it. Either way, voters will be able, more clearly than in the past, to assign credit or blame in coming elections.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Improving teen driver safety must be a top priority To the editor: Nearly half of all teen drivers will experience a car crash before graduating from high school, and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) cites one of the main reasons being that parents are becoming less involved in training teen drivers after they receive their licenses and are not regularly reinforcing teen driving safety measures.

to curb the number of teen driver-related crashes, but teen drivers are still 1.6 times more likely to be involved in a car crash than adults.

Illinois has made important strides to improve teen driver safety, such as banning the handheld use of mobile devices while driving, and implementing a Graduated Driver Licensing system that gives beginning drivers more supervised time behind the wheel before graduating to full licensure. As a result, teen driving fatality crashes have decreased by 60 percent in Illinois since 2008.

The Illinois Insurance Association (IIA) and its members

recognize that while progress has been made, more needs to be done to protect teen drivers and their passengers.

IIA continues to promote safe driving initiatives for teens such as the NHTSA’s “5 to Drive” campaign, which offers teen driver safety tips and highlights five practices statistically associated with safer outcomes: no drinking and driving, no distracted driving, no extra passengers, no speeding and consistent seat belt use.

Coal Miner’s Cafe has a new cook in the kitchen, but the same hometown appeal

BY DAVE COOK news@putnamcountyrecord.com MARK — When Nico Luna was younger, he made a promise to his sister, Maribel, that he’d someday buy her a restaurant so she could continue to do what she loves: cooking.

He made good on that promise when he, Maribel, Flor Castaneda and Jessica Perino re-opened the Coal Miner’s Cafe on Oct. 20, with Maribel in charge of the kitchen.

“We saw there was an interest and wanted to own something in the community. It’s been a lot of work, but we’re very happy,” Luna said.

Perino, of rural Putnam County, is taking care of things up front and is enjoying her new challenges.

“I love the working atmosphere, it’s very upbeat and the customers have all been so friendly,” she said.

The new management has been surprised at how quickly everything has come together, as the group has been busy refreshing everything from the interior to the menu, but things haven’t changed too much.

“We’ll still be serving Ray’s spaghetti sauce and some other customer favorites, along with homemade desserts,” Perino said.

The morning of the interview, Verda was one of a group of regulars enjoying breakfast around a large, round table.

“It was just time for us to step away, because it was a lot of hard work. We think the new owners are doing a wonderful job, and we’re happy for them and wish them well,” Verda said.

Along with new specials and old favorites, the Coal Miner’s Cafe is also offering a new “Mexican Night” menu on Wednesdays. It offers tempting homemade specials such as

a variety of tacos, burritos, enchiladas, tamales, homemade salsa, guacamole, rice and beans, and much

more. Customers can also buy tamales to enjoy at home for $12 a dozen.

Another special part of the Coal Miner’s Cafe is the booth honoring the late Darrell Alleman, who was a regular customer. Several photos of Darrell and his well-known classic truck are mounted on the wall above his favorite booth.

In the future, the cafe is hoping to begin offering limited catering services. To help ensure deer hunters take to their stands with a warm, full belly, the cafe will be opening for breakfast at 3 a.m. when shotgun season begins on Friday. That schedule will run from Nov. 16-18; and from Nov. 29-Dec. 2; and from Dec. 7-9.

“We want to welcome everyone to come and eat here, and we’re looking forward to being a part of this community for a long time,” Luna said.

OSWEGO — Carol A. Bachio, 80, wife of the late George Bachio, formerly of Hennepin, died the afternoon of Saturday, Nov. 3, 2018, at Symphony at The Tillers in Oswego.

Born Nov. 27, 1937, in Hooven, Ohio, to William Woodrow and Margie (Atkins) McKnight, she married George Bachio July 8, 1961, in Moline. He preceded her in death on Aug. 19, 2006.

She graduated from Illinois State University. She was a teacher in the Putnam County School District and DePue Unit Schools for several years. She was also a member of St. George Orthodox Church in Spring Valley.

Survivors include her children, Anne (Ralph) Townsend of Streamwood, Mike (Christie) Bachio of Sugar Grove and John Bachio of Oswego; her grandchildren, Jacob and Emma Bachio, and Chris Townsend; her brother, Neal McKnight; her sister, Beth Austin; and nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband, Carol was also preceded in death by her brother, Woody McKnight, and her sister, Cindy McKnight.

Funeral services were conducted Friday, Nov. 9, at the Barto Funeral Home in Spring Valley with Father Andrew Kishler of St. George Orthodox Church officiating. Burial followed at the DePue Serbian Cemetery. Visitation took place prior to the services at the funeral home.

Donations in Carol’s memory can be made to the St. George Orthodox Church in Spring Valley.

PC School Board meeting time change The Putnam County School Board meeting scheduled for Monday, Nov. 19 will begin at 5:30 p.m. instead of 6:30 p.m.

Four school board seats up for election The Putnam County School Board will have four seats appearing on the ballot for the April 2 Consolidated Election.

IN BRIEF Health department releases inspection scores The Bureau-Putnam County Health Department makes routine and unannounced visits each month to various food service establishments in Bureau and Putnam counties to inspect the operations.

Health inspectors use an identical scorecard at each facility, where they check for health code compliance in 45 areas. Each area carries a rating from one to five, with five being the most critical.

Inspectors check the entire operations of the facility in 14 different categories, such as food protection, personnel, and garbage and refuse disposal.

the health inspector deducts one to five points for every violation. The final total is the facility’s inspection report score.

A passing food inspection score is 65 or above.

At 65, the Bureau-Putnam County ordinance allows the health department to close an establishment, but a score doesn’t have to be that low for the department to close it. It depends on the number of critical and non-critical violations and the type of violations. Certain combinations can create a domino effect for food-borne outbreaks.

Marshall-Putnam 4-H’ers recognized during Achievement Night HENRY — University of Illinois Extension Marshall-Putnam honored 4-H’ers from throughout Marshall and Putnam counties to celebrate a year of hard work, leadership and dedication to personal growth on Nov. 4 at the Henry Presbyterian Church.

Project Achievement winners receive a bronze medal, Service Achievement winners receive a silver medal and Leadership Achievement receive a gold medal. The award level is earned by how many experiences the member completes in each area.

The Bronze Clover Award is for youth who complete at least one experience in each of the four dimensions.

The Silver Clover Award is for youth who complete at least two experiences in each of the four dimensions (at least two of those experiences must be at the county level or beyond). Record books are a very important part of 4-H. It gives the members an opportunity to reflect on their yearly work and helps develop written skills for all the records they will need to keep in their life. The junior Best Kept Record Book winner is Ryan Carlson of Henry Guys & Gals. The senior Best Kept Record Book winners were Jonathan Downey of Saratoga Leadaways, and Christin Wier and Michaela Wier, both of Steuben Rangers.

4-H would not be possible without the hard work of volunteers and leaders. Those recognized for milestone years were: Joy Meachum and Sara Miles, one year; Shauna Breckenridge, Jamie Eilts and Helen Lenkaitis, five years; and Rhonda Downey, Ruth Hofstatter, Lisa Kull and Lisa Palm, 15 years.

The Spirit Stick is a favorite of the members.

Each club presents a skit or sings songs to show their 4-H spirit. Creativity and group involvement is the key to winning the Spirit Stick. It is a tough competition with original songs, costumes and a game show. This year’s winner was Henry Guys and Gals with their rendition of “Are you Smarter than a 4-H’er”.

The evening ended with refreshments from the host clubs, Lostant Leaders and PC Progressors.

Youth symphony orchestra announces fall concert LASALLE — The Illinois Valley Youth Symphony Orchestra will perform its fall concert at 3:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 8, in Matthiessen Auditorium at LaSalle-Peru High School.

Hennepin Pool will show movies on Nov. 25 HENNEPIN — The Hennepin Park District will sponsor Movie Mania on Friday, Nov. 23, on their 82-inch HD big screen TV in the Community Room. They will be showing three movies — Incredibles 2 at 9 a.m., Robin Hood at 11:30 a.m. and Beauty and the Beast Enchanted Christmas at 1:30 p.m. You can come for one of the movies or come for all of them. Popcorn and a beverage will be served during the films.

Hot dogs and chips will be served after the first movie. Following the second movie, participants will make their own ice cream sundaes. Participants may also bring a sleeping bag and pillow to lie on.

All movie goers are invited to stay after the movies for open swim at no additional cost.

Open swim will be from 1 to 5 p.m.

The cost of this program is free to Hennepin and Hennepin Township and $10 for all other areas. If you only attend one movie the cost will be $4 for all other

areas. Pre-registration is requested. Due to space constraints, only 50 participants will be taken. They will take walk-ins on the day of the activity if they have not reached capacity. “I Love a Piano” is the celebration of the music and lyrics of Irving Berlin. It follows the journey of a piano as it moves in and out of American lives from the turn of the century to the present. Along the way, the story comes to vibrant life with 69 of Irving Berlin’s most beloved songs, including classics such as “Blue Skies,” “There’s No Business Like Show Business,” “Puttin’ on the Ritz,” “Cheek to Cheek,” “God Bless America” and, of course, “I Love a Piano.”

Alternately heartbreaking and hilarious, rousing and reflective, “I Love a Piano” is a fitting tribute to the man Jerome Kern famously said had “no place in American music — he is American music.”

Festival 56’s 2018 fall production is directed by Luke Brooks and made possible in part by the National Endowment for the Arts and the Illinois Arts Council. Curtain time is 7:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 16, and Saturday, Nov. 17, and 2 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 18.

BY SAVANNAH TUCKER AND LILLIAN SANDBERG Special to the PCR GRANVILLE — The Putnam County High School Theatre Department will presenting “The Diary of Anne Frank,” dramatized by Frances Goodrich and Albert Hackett, on Friday, Nov. 16, and Saturday, Nov. 17, in the high school auditorium.

Doors will open at 7 p.m. and curtain is at 7:30 p.m.

“The Diary of Anne Frank” is based on the true story of Anne Frank, a young Jewish girl and her family who are hiding from the Nazis during the Holocaust. The inspiration behind this production at PCHS has been to recreate a small part of history that we hope to never endure and a opportunity to pay tribute to all those who suffered through the Holocaust and those who still suffer today.

Annual holiday preview party on Nov. 16 at the Reddick Mansion OTTAWA — The Reddick Mansion Association (RMA) invites the public to its “Sparkling Evening,” its fifth annual Holiday Preview Party on Friday, Nov. 16, from 5 to 8 p.m. Refreshments will reflect the “Sparkling Evening” theme and will feature champagne and chocolate. Well-known local guitarist and vocalist Steve Sharp will be performing throughout the evening.

“We are very excited to have Steve at the Mansion,” said Lorraine McCallister, president of the RMA. “His music will add another ‘sparkle’ to the evening. We hope that many will come to the Mansion to see him perform and to enjoy the Mansion in all her Christmas splendor.”

The “period rooms” will be lit by candles and Christmas tree lights.

“These lovely rooms take on a totally different ambiance with the subtle lighting. And you get a much better sense of what Mansion would have been like when the Reddicks lived in it,” according to McCallister, While enjoying the music and beautiful decorations, visitors will be able to chat with costumed docents as they leisurely wander throughout the Mansion. People will also be able to visit and take photos with Father Christmas (as portrayed by RMA board member Roger Hooper).

A donation of $10 per person is requested.

The Reddick Mansion, located at 100 W. Lafayette St. in Ottawa, was built in 1858. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Sites and is open to the public for tours.

OGLESBY — The Oglesby Elks have announced Madison Keegan and Kane Clendenen as their October Teens of the Month.

Keegan, a senior at Putnam County High School, is the daughter of Josh and Jen Keegan of Granville. She is currently second in her class and has been active in golf, track and cheerleading all four years, as well as participating in school musicals for three years. She has been on the high honor roll every quarter since sixth grade.

Keegan is president of her class and Interact, and the vice president of Student Council. She is also a member of the Spanish Club and Scholastic Team for the last two years. For the last three years, she has been in the National Honor Society as well. She is currently the captain/ co-captain for golf, track and cheerleading. As a junior, she was honored for being all-conference academic for golf, cheerleading and track.

Keegan has also volunteered at Illinois Valley Community Hospital, St. Jude Pediatric Hospital and blood drives, as well as kids and elderly programs. She wants to attend Michigan State University to major in pre-med and to enter into a Ph-MD program at a medical school to specialize in pediatric oncology.

Clendenen, a senior at St. Bede Academy, is the son of Kevin and Barb Clendenen of Mendota. He has been on the honor roll for three years.

Clendenen has been active in football, basketball and baseball for four years, including a travel baseball team as well. As a junior, he was

He has volunteered at several sports camps, Holy Cross Church and School, as well as the

St. Bede Abbey. He has been honored with the Volunteer Service Hours Award as a sophomore and junior. He was also selected as the Grandma Rosie’s Outstanding Student of the Month as a junior.

Clendenen plans to attend college and major in business/sports management with a minor in Spanish, as well as play baseball in college before attending law school.

Seventh- and eighth-grade basketball teams for Putnam County Junior High Pumas played Waltham on Tuesday.

The seventh-grade team won 25-17.

Nathan Husser led with eight points.

Cole Vipon put in six and Orlando Harris added five. Bryce Smith, Noah Polhson and Gavin Cimei each scored two.

The eighth-grade squad won

42-17. Jackson McDonald scored 10.

Wyatt Grimshaw added six. Austin Mattingly had five. Ryan Migliorini added four. Andrew Pyszka and Nicholas Currie scored three points each. Blake Baker, Carter Holmes and Troy Petty had two points each.

The eighth-grade boys lost to Roanoke-Benson 46-43 on Thursday.

Putnam County placed third in the Little Tri-County Tournament, beating El Paso-Gridley 36-16 on Saturday, losing to Roanoke-Benson 37-17 on Thursday and beating Henry in overtime 22-19 on Nov. 6.

Ava Hatton scored 10 points in the third-place game. Mikenna Boyd added nine. Gabby Doyle scored eight and Gracie Ciucci had six points.

Hatton led the scoring in the Henry game with eight. Boyd scored seven points, Ciucci added three. Doyle and Sihanouk Zulberi had two points each.

Rep. Kinzinger defeats Dady in 16th District

BY PAM EGGEMEIER Shaw Media U.S. Rep. Adam Kinzinger easily withstood a challenge from Rockford immigration attorney Sara Dady in the Nov. 6 election to win his fifth term in the U.S. House of Representatives. With all 648 precincts reporting, Kinzinger had 60 percent of the vote to Dady’s 40 percent.

Illinois’ 16th Congressional District covers all of Putnam County,

along with Boone, Bureau, Grundy, Iroquois, LaSalle, Lee, Livingston and Ogle counties, and parts of DeKalb, Ford, Stark, Will, and Winnebago counties.

The Channahon Republican has represented the 16th Congressional District for three terms after serving his first in the 11th District.

Kinzinger had defeated Oswego Republican James Marter in the primary, while Dady knocked off three Democrats — Neill Mohammad,

Amy Murri Briel and Beth Vercolio-Osmund — on March 20 to earn a shot at the incumbent.

In a conference call Election Night, Kinzinger said it was a great night for his camp, but called what was happening nationally “a split decision.”

“It was nice to get a win by a sizable margin — it reaffirms the hard work I’ve done and our great team,” Kinzinger said. “It appears, however, that the House will lose its majority, but it’s been a great

night for the Senate so far.”

Democrats succeeded in winning enough seats to take control of the House, a development that must be considered a referendum on the presidency, Kinzinger said.

“Democrats were motivated, and although good policies have come from the administration, people are disgusted by some of the president’s language. We have to show respect for each other, and the president has to take the lead,” Kinzinger said.
