PIES FOR PAWS PCES students raise money to help IVAR’s animals

The annual Food for Fines amnesty program, which runs from Nov. 6 to 18, allows library patrons with overdue fines to make a food donation in exchange for $1 worth of fines. The participating libraries include the Graves-Hume Public Library

“We’ve been doing this for many years and it’s important for us to be community partners.

This program allows us to reach further into the community and continue our outreach work,” Donna Blomquist of the LaSalle Public Library said.

“I think this helps encourage the return of overdue items and we’re also always happy to help such a good cause,” Princeton Public Library Director Julie Wayland said.

These libraries will accept canned or boxed, non-perishable food donations. At the end of the program they’ll then give the collected donations to their area food

The group eventually decided they wanted to raise money to help the animals at the Illinois Valley Animal Rescue (IVAR) in LaSalle. The students of each class collected whatever they could and as a reward, their principal announced a lucky few from the class raising the most money could throw a pie at her.

“It doesn’t matter if you gave five cents or five dollars, your efforts have made a difference and you’ve helped these animals,” Balestri told her students.

The school raised a total of $160 and the final morning of the event found Balestri a bit nervous.

“I’ve spoken in front of hundreds of people many times and I’ve never been nervous, but for some reason my hands are shaking this morning,” she said.

To help celebrate the success of the fundraising, IVAR volunteer and PCES alumnus John McKirgan attended the Oct. 31 assembly. He also brought a four-legged representative in Laya, who was appropriately dressed in a hamburger Halloween costume. Laya is a two-time IVAR rescue who McKirgan adopted after she was returned to the shelter a second time.

McKirgan told the students the funds will help provide medical care to the shelter’s 35 dogs and more than 100 cats. He later spoke about why he likes taking shelter dogs to visit schools.

“I like getting the kids to enjoy the dogs and when they see a bit of the sadder side of pets, it helps give hope

for the future because they’ll see how important their compassion is and that they can make a difference,” he said.

After the students were assembled in the gym, Balestri reviewed the school’s “Six Pillars of Character,” an ongoing exercise designed to help instill positive behavior and decision making. The pillars consist of truth, responsibility, respect, caring, fairness and citizenship.

Following that, Laya was introduced.

When the students learned she’d had puppies while in the shelter, they asked how many babies she’d had. McKirgan’s answer of “Nine,” resulted in a roar of approval.

Balestri then drew three names from Valerie Peterson’s fourth-grade class: Brayden Zuniga, Jonathan Avila and Vincen Dobson. As their principal assembled the pies which she’d soon be wearing, the student body grew increasingly louder as they encouraged her to make them as big as possible.

Through each of the three pies, everyone in the gymnasium was laughing, including Balestri. Following the issuance of the pies, Balestri, as she wiped the cream from her hair, announced they were rather cold and wet.

As the PCES student body filed from the gym, many stopped briefly to pet Laya. Before heading back to class the organizers were asked which they enjoyed more, their principal wearing pies or helping the animals in the shelter.

The answers were unanimously “Helping the animals,” which shows Balestri’s students have been paying attention to their “Six Pillars of Character.”

“Along with helping our local food pantries, this also helps patrons who’ve incurred fines and allows them to take care of them in a way that also benefits the community. We’ve been doing this for several years and while the amounts vary from year to year, there’s always a large amount of food donated,” Marilyn Calbow of the Putnam County libraries said.

A maximum of 25 items to pay up to $25 in overdue fines will be allowed and items must be presented at the circulation desks.

The library will also be accepting donations from patrons without fines.

“Any donation, no matter how small, helps our efforts to feed the hungry and we’re always happy to receive assistance from our

libraries,” John Shimkus, director of the Putnam County Food Pantry, said.

“Food for Fines is extremely important to our pantry because it comes at a time of great need.

Children are out of school more during the holidays and it helps us stretch our funds and keep our shelves full through the winter,” Vanessa Hoffeditz, director of the Bureau County Food Pantry, said.

Donated food will not be accepted for lost or damaged materials, the replacement of cards or inter-library loan fees. Because of safety concerns, donated items must be in their original packaging. Damaged packaging, expired items or those packaged in glass will not be allowed. Suggested items include canned fruits and vegetables; soups, cereals, pasta mixes and canned meats. Opioid Crisis workshop scheduled for Thursday PRINCETON — University of Illinois Extension’s Community and Economic Development team will host a free webinar, “The Opioid Crisis: Community Strategies for Treatment and Recovery,” which will be presented by Heidi Clark, Division Chief of Health Data and Policy from the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH), from noon to 1 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 9.

Opioid addiction is of increasing concern to rural Illinois. Join this free webinar to learn about how local government officials and community leaders can address the opioid crisis.

Clark received her undergraduate degree at Stanford University, majoring in human biology with a concentration in global health and development of underserved communities. She then moved to New York City to work in clinical research at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. While in New York, she received her Masters of Public Health Degree from New

York University.

In 2016, she returned to her rural roots and moved to Schuyler County, Ill. She is currently the Division Chief of Health Data and Policy at the Illinois Department of Public Health, where she oversees the Center for Rural Health and the Center for Health Statistics as well as helping with the IDPH response to the opioid crisis.

Participants in this webinar will learn about the impact of opioids on Illinois, what the state and federal government are doing about it, and what local government or coalitions may do to address the crisis.

Meeting on Monday GRANVILLE — On Sept. 19, the Lions Club asked to be recognized at the Granville Village Board meeting to speak about the possibility of setting up a Lions Club in town or in the county. It was voted by the board to endorse the idea of trying to form a Lions Club in the local community.

An informational community meeting will be at 6:30 p.m.

Monday, Nov. 13, at the Granville Village Hall for people who are interested as to how a Lions Club can help area communities. People can have their questions answered at this meeting.

Prairie Arts Center Mini-Tree Festival opens Nov. 17 PRINCETON — The Prairie Arts Center will open its doors from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Nov. 17, for the kick-off of its eighth annual Mini-Tree and Holiday Decor Festival.

The festival showcases mini-trees, wreaths and tabletop pieces by artists and crafts persons throughout the Princeton area.

All are welcome to this completely free reception that includes holiday music and refreshments. Following the reception, the festival entries will be on display Saturdays and Sundays, from 1 to 4 p.m. through Dec. 3.

The festival is a fundraiser for community arts programming by the Prairie Arts Council. Festival visitors may bid on the trees in a silent auction at the reception or by phone at 815-875-2787.

Book World’s final chapter at mall All of chain’s book stores to close by January

BY DAVE COOK news@putnamcountyrecord.com PERU — In yet another blow to the Peru Mall, it was recently announced that Book World will soon be closing.

In a press release, Mark Dupont, Book World’s senior vice president, stated all 45 Book World stores, which are located across seven states, are expected

to be closed by January.

This follows the Peru Mall’s recent losses of both Sears and JC Penney as anchor stores and leaves only Bergner’s as a major tenant.

Dupont said consumers are now choosing to shop online and this change in commerce is what fueled the company’s decision. All 325 Book World employees, including those in Peru, will soon be losing their jobs.

Book World will be using the holiday shopping season to help liquidate its inventory through dis-

counted sales which were scheduled to begin on Nov. 2 and will continue until all inventory is sold.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, retail sales at bookstores have dropped approximately 11 percent in the past year and although e-commerce has flourished, e-books aren’t quite as popular as they’ve previously been, which gives hope to those who love traditional books.

The management of Peru’s Book World was contacted, but they said they had been instructed to not speak of the closures.

“We’re disappointed Book World’s corporate parent has chosen to take this step. Our shoppers appreciated Book World’s broad variety of titles across many different categories,” said Phillip Hileman, general manager of Peru Mall.

Hileman also said GK Development, the real estate acquisition and development company which owns the Peru Mall, is looking at numerous opportunities to reinvigorate the mall so it continues to be a significant retail presence in the Illinois Valley.

Brady’s Bunch benefit helps 14-year-old L-P student

BY ZACHARY J. PRATT news@putnamcountyrecord.com OGLESBY — A recent benefit for a 14-year-old boy was successful as community members came to provide their support.

L-P freshman Brady Blanco, having dealt with epilepsy and hemophilia for much of his life, was diagnosed with familial dysautonomia a few months back. His body is unable to properly regulate his heart rate, blood pressure or temperature, and he has lost feeling in a number of nerves.

The Brady’s Bunch benefit held in October at the Oglesby Elks was

intended to raise funds to alleviate some of the family’s burden with mounting medical costs, both those in the present and those to come. The event included raffles as well as food.

While attendance was not at the number which was planned for, Brady’s mother, Janell Blanco, referred to the event as “a major success.”

“We had quite a turnout,” Blanco said.

The benefit saw 230 people arrive in support of Brady, a fact which pleased the teenager.

“Brady loved seeing everyone,” said his mother.

The Henry County Sheriff’s Office is investigating several cases of altered U.S. currency appearing at local businesses.

The suspect is described as a black male, approximately 50 years old, who walks with a limp. Photos of the suspect are available on the Facebook pages for the Woodhull and Monmouth Police Departments.

The counterfeit bills are actual currency altered to appear to be a larger denomination. Since they are actual bills they’ll pass the pen test commonly used to detect counterfeit currency. Closer inspection will reveal irregularities in serial numbers and picture.

Holding a bill up to a light source may also help detect the fake.

Neither the Bureau County nor the Putnam County Sheriff’s Offices have received any reports of this activity within their respective jurisdictions.

If you have contact with this suspect, contact your local law enforcement agency immediately. All businesses are also asked to alert their employees to this activity and report anything of a suspicious nature to police, especially any vehicle information.

Allegion Americas hosts area high school students for Manufacturing Day PRINCETON — Allegion Americas hosted Princeton Mayor Joel Quiram and nearly 40 local high school students on Oct. 26 at its fourth-annual Manufacturing Day event in Princeton, a part of the community-wide “North Central Illinois Discover Manufacturing Career Expo.”

Manufacturing Day is an annual nationwide event supported by the National Association of Manufacturing, during which American manufacturers open their doors to help educate people about the industry. The Princeton-area expo is supported by the North Central Regional Betterment Coalition, Illinois Valley Community College (IVCC) and Starved Rock Associates Vocational and Technical Education.

Allegion manufactures LCN door closers at its Princeton facility on Railroad Avenue, where it has operated for nearly 90 years.

“Allegion holds Manufacturing Day events across the U.S. in an effort to start a collaborative conversation about

manufacturing careers and the skills gap in the industry,” said Allegion Senior Vice President of Global Operations and Integrated Supply Chain Chris Muhlenkamp. “I’d say most manufacturing jobs today are centered on employee empowerment, engagement and innovation. Unfortunately, our industry has not effectively communicated this – and Allegion is trying to help change that.”

Students and government officials who attended Allegion’s 2017 Manufacturing Day were given the opportunity to tour that facility and see, first-hand, how those security products are made. They also heard from Quiram on the importance of manufacturing.

“Manufacturing is alive and well in the city of Princeton,” Quiram said. “Products manufactured here in town are used throughout, not only the country, but the world; we’re very proud of that. And we look forward to future growth and expansion in the years to come.”

Allegion employs more than 300 people at the Princeton facility. Manufacturing Day, as a part of the community manufacturing careers expo, gives Allegion the opportunity to cultivate relationships with local schools and to develop innovative ways to teach students about the future of manufacturing. To actively address the skills gap, Allegion is also developing skilled trade apprenticeship programs and offering tuition reimbursement opportunities, as well as transitioning some part-time and temporary employees to full-time positions.

“Informing and inspiring the next generation of manufacturers will require a good deal of work within our communities – but it’s a worthy cause,” Muhlenkamp said. “Allegion is committed to combating the skills gap. We will continue investing in our manufacturing processes and equipment, our people and the communities in which we work to further advance the manufacturing competency.”

HENNEPIN — Sandra Palm, 74, of Hennepin passed away peacefully Tuesday, Oct. 31, 2017, at her residence.

Sandie was born July 11, 1943, in Spring Valley to Lawrence and Arlene “Red” Trovero. She married Kenneth Palm July 24, 1964, in Peoria. Ken passed away June 25, 2002.

She graduated from Hennepin High School.

Sandie was a teller for the North Central Bank in Hennepin for 31 years.

She was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Hennepin, the Hennepin Betterment Association, and the Altar and Rosary Society. Sandie received the Citizen of the Year award from Hennepin in 2016.

Survivors include one son, Jeff Palm of Minneapolis, Minn.; one daughter, Tracy (Amy) Palm of Portland, Maine; one brother, Len Trovero of Bloomington; two sisters, Barb Paxson of Hennepin and Cathy Stout of Sunnyvale, Calif.; and one grandson, Devin.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Ken. Visitation was held Friday, Nov. 3, at the Dysart-Cofoid Funeral Chapel in Granville.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held Saturday, Nov. 4, at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Hennepin with Father Patrick De Meulemeester officiating. Cremation rites were accorded following the service.

Pallbearers were Paul Miskowiec, Terry Judd, Lance Boecker, Kevin Trovero, Kris Trovero and Curt Stout.

MAGNOLIA — Eleanor J. McCoy, 84, of Magnolia died Wednesday, Oct. 11, 2017, at her home in Magnolia.

Eleanor was born Feb. 8, 1933, in Creston, Ill., to Robert W. and Gladys M. (Skinner) Bunting.

She graduated with the Magnolia-Swaney High School Class of 1951. She studied science at the University of Illinois, where she was elected to Phi Beta Kappa Society. The university had no medical technology program at the time, so she completed her training at Joliet Junior College in 1962. She was a registered medical technologist at Silver Cross Hospital in Joliet, where she remained until she retired in December of 1996.

Eleanor belonged to Marshall-Putnam Quilters Guild and Princeton Quilters Guild. She was a member of the Magnolia Township Preservation Society, the Magnolia United Methodist Church’s after-school program and the American Society for Clinical Pathology.

Survivors include one son, Andy McCoy of Plainfield; one daughter, Carol (Mark) Fredrickson of Shorewood; one brother, Roger (Sheila) Bunting of Normal; two sisters, Lois (the late Robert) Lawler of Bureau and Gail (Richard) Hopkins of Farmington; two grandchildren, Andrew McCoy and Michael Fredrickson; and one great-grandchild, Emmett McCoy. She was preceded in death by her parents, Robert and Gladys Bunting; one brother, Charles Bunting, and his wife, Patricia McKirgan; one sister, Dorothy Wood, and her husband, Leonard; and her canine companion, Bosco.

LASALLE — Illinois State Police District 17 announced the results of Alcohol Countermeasure Enforcement patrols in LaSalle County during October.

These ACE patrols allowed the State Police to focus on preventing, detecting and taking enforcement action in response to violations associated with impaired driving and illegal transportation or consumption of alcohol or drugs.

During the patrols, two arrests were made for driving under the influence violations, and one arrest was made for one other alcohol/drug violation.

Troopers issued a total of seven citations and 13 warnings during the extra patrols.

Alcohol and drug impairment is a factor in more than 30 percent of all fatal motor vehicle crashes in Illinois. There is one alcohol-related traffic fatality every 53 minutes in the U.S. The ACE program allows officers to work even harder at removing dangerous DUI offenders from the road.

Even if giving is in your DNA, it’s also OK at times to receive

Unnecessary roughness vs. road budgets State lawmakers should be penalized for unnecessary roughness toward county and township highway budgets. Their financial cuts will lead to unnecessarily rough roadways, which is not what farmers and other rural residents need.

T

here’s been a lot of football played – and watched – in these parts this fall.

Whether the games have been high school, college or professional, the men in the striped shirts have played important roles to make sure the rules are followed and everything is aboveboard.

It’s too bad an extra officiating crew couldn’t have been hired to cast a critical eye on the game-playing behind the Illinois budget process and the major cuts that have emerged this fall for county and township roads statewide.

No doubt their penalty markers would have littered the field of play.

Where to begin?

First of all, “holding” should be called on state legislators who approved a budget that held back money that should have gone to county and township road budgets.

Instead, legislators shifted $303 million in transportation funds to pay for Chicago Transit Authority bills and Series D bond payments, both formerly financed by the general fund. County and township transportation budgets are suffering a $50 million hit, while state highway construction projects bear the rest of the burden.

What does that mean for Putnam County?

Less state revenue will mean a 50 percent reduction in local road maintenance projects.

Pat Sloan, Marshall-Putnam County highway engineer, told the Putnam County Board last month that less road repair money from the state, combined with higher costs for materials, means the highway department can do only one-fifth of the road repairs that were done in 2000.

In neighboring Bureau County, the outlook is just as bleak.

A 12 percent reduction in state revenue – $73,493 – from the county transportation budget.

Not to mention $90,517 in state transportation money that will be cut from 22 of the county’s 25 townships. Only Princeton, Hall and Leepertown townships were spared.

John Gross, Bureau County highway engineer, explained in a letter that the county will make up the cost by not replacing an employee who recently retired. Other cuts will be made from the fuel and parts budget.

Throughout the state, with certain normal road maintenance activities being lessened, county and township roads are bound to suffer.

Those roads are vital arteries for farmers to transport millions of dollars of commodities to market, which in reality is a main reason rural township and county roads were built in the first place.

That calls for more penalty flags.

• Interference (in local road budgets).

• Hitting a defenseless player (rural folks have little power over state actions).

• Offsides (reaching into the transportation fund from the general fund).

Making light of the situation is not our aim. Our aim is to point the finger of blame at any lawmaker who supports such callous and short-sighted cuts in rural road maintenance.

There’s one final penalty that should be called: unnecessary roughness (against local road budgets).

These financial cuts might well lead to unnecessarily rough roadways, which is not what farmers and other rural folks need.

It’s something to keep in mind the next time you encounter your legislator.

am a biological blonde. I have fought the stereotype for my entire life and I have tried to take it in stride when I do something “blonde.”

Last weekend, my blonde roots came shining through and I encountered the epitome of blondeness. I was getting ready to type my column for the paper on the computer last Friday night. I lost Internet service.

I only had so much time and a full weekend planned and I wanted to get it done. I did all the typical troubleshooting tricks that had worked before, and I still couldn’t get it to work. I am not tech-saavy. Quite the opposite as a matter of fact, so I didn’t even know enough of the basics to investigate too far, and so I made the uneducated choice that it was the router. Okay. I’ve done this before. I know how to match the colored cords on the back of the thingy-ma-doodle. I’m pretty good at deciphering pictures. Don’t bore me with all of the long words.

My daughter was coming from Iowa, so I asked her to pick me up a new one on her way home. She did, but when we tried to install it, we still weren’t getting service. So, on the outside chance that it was something bigger, I called Mediacom, and lo and behold, I discovered that they actually expect you to pay for Internet service. I promptly paid my bill over the phone, and I was back on line.

In the chaos of my days, I had simply forgotten, or maybe I ignored the past due that was

I hate bills. I hate when I forget to pay them. I also hate when I don’t have the money to pay them.

Oftentimes in my life, I have been in a situation where my income did not match what was going out. I don’t live extravagantly, but sometimes, even basic bills can become overwhelming. I have been self employed for most of my life and even though there are perks, one of them is not paid vacation and paid sick days.

I often blame my good health on the fact that I simply cannot afford to be sick. I have to admit, I was in my 40s before I worked a job that had paid sick days. When I interviewed, and they informed me I would get nine sick days a year, I sat with my jaw in my lap. I hadn’t taken nine sick days in my life. I had to have someone (who I’m sure laughed privately at my expense) walk me through the procedure of taking a sick day. I’ve never felt dumber in my life.

Often times, I have had debts that have overwhelmed me and I’ve had to accept help. This is a difficult thing to do (for me). I struggled with being a taker. My heart and

spirit scream giver, and being a taker didn’t sit well with my soul, until I had someone explain to me that I wasn’t being a taker. I was being a receiver. There is a difference.

I was asked if I enjoyed giving to people. Did it bring me joy? I emphatically and enthusiastically responded yes. Then that person said, “Why would you deny someone else the joy of giving to you?”

Wow. That really hit home. Since then, I’ve tried to be a gracious and grateful receiver when the situation calls for it.

In church last Sunday, we sang a song with the lyrics, “He paid a debt he didn’t owe. I owed a debt I couldn’t pay.” What a profound thought. We screwed up. We didn’t pay our Internet bill, so we lost service. Jesus stepped in and took care of that for us. He loved us enough to cover those debts and bail us out of our “blonde” moments.

He did it with a glad and willing heart, much as we would gladly help our neighbor. It’s comforting to know that when I get my final disconnect notice, and I’m about to lose power, there is someone there who loves me enough to wipe away that debt and cover my expenses, even when I don’t deserve it.

That, my friends, is called grace.

Change isn’t easy, but it’s worth the work

O

ne of the gifts of living in a representative democracy is that voting is only one of the rights it confers. For ordinary people who want to make change – who in some way want to alter their neighborhood or town or state or even the nation – the promise exists that by dint of their own efforts they can do so. This is a precious gift.

But it is not an easy one to enjoy.

Even in a democracy, bringing about significant change requires hard work – a level of intensity and commitment beyond the ordinary responsibilities of citizenship. You need a workable, achievable remedy that will correct the problem you’re worried about. You need patience and perseverance, and a specific set of skills and capabilities.

To begin with, you can’t make change alone. You’ll require the help of others. So you have to be able to listen carefully to people – and then identify the interest groups and individuals who can help you achieve what you want.

This means you also need to be able to look around you and understand the political lay of the land. How intensely will this or that individual or group support you? Will they actually help, or just pay lip service? What are they willing to do – and, just as important, not willing to do?

What about the lobbyists, the mayor’s or governor’s office – or the White House? What kind of reception can you expect from the media? And what will it take to get your allies to work in a coherent, coordinated way?

You also have to take responsibil-

COMMENTARY Lee H. Hamilton ity for being the expert on your proposal. You’ll need to understand its weaknesses and strengths, its potential impact, and the arguments both for and against it. There’s nothing quite so challenging as appearing before a city council or congressional committee and answering questions from politicians who have their own agendas as they grill you.

You have to know what you’re talking about, and be willing constantly to update yourself on the facts. Facts drive the public dialogue, and you want always to be on the lookout for the most persuasive facts or developments that can support your proposal.

This is because you’ll also need to communicate constantly, whether you’re trying to build support one on one or before a gathering of hundreds.

On radio, television, in print, online – it’s impossible to over-communicate.

And though amplifying the reach of your voice has value, so does retail persuading – plain one-on-one conversations that teach you which arguments carry weight and which don’t. Because although you might be starting with like-minded allies, inevitably you’ll need to broaden your coalition to include people who were initially skeptical or saw the issue differently from you.

Which is why you also should

always be open to the idea that you could be wrong, that your proposal could be improved and strengthened, that others might have better ideas both on substance and on strategy. Part of the art of building coalitions is being open to proposals that alter or change your proposal.

You may have put a lot of work into designing and drafting it, but one of the first things you’ll encounter is someone who’s got an amendment.

No one possesses all the skills needed to persuade, cajole, negotiate, and strategize his or her way to success. Especially when it comes to pushing a cause at the state or national level, it will take money: to communicate, to advertise, to travel. It takes resources to accomplish changes of consequence, which means raising money – and dealing with donors who want a role to play, with all the challenges that brings.

Fortunately, there is no single center of power in this country. It takes a complex effort within a complex system to make change, which is why it’s such a challenge and why many people get discouraged.

It’s built into the idea of representative democracy that making change is difficult. But most of us wouldn’t have it any other way. Few things can exceed the satisfaction of helping shape the direction and success of your community or nation.

Organizational meeting set for new DAR chapter HENRY — An organizational meeting will be held at 1:30 p.m.

Sunday, Nov. 12, at the First Presbyterian Church in Henry to begin the process of founding a new DAR chapter. The church is located at 511 Wirt St. Any new prospective members, any transfer members or women wanting to learn about the Daughters of the American Revolution are welcome.

State leaders will attend, including Gloria Flathom, Illinois state

regent; Donna Benshoof, state organizing secretary; Joy Upton, chapter development and revitalization committee; and Patricia Holcomb, District II director.

Founding a new chapter is a special event and exciting for the Illinois Organization and the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution. When a new chapter is formed, women want to be part of the organizing and later the charter list of members.

The new chapter will join the current 104 chapters in the Illinois state organization and promote patriotism, preserve American history and support education. Members are descended from the patriots who won American independence during the Revolutionary War. DAR is one of the world’s largest and most active service organizations.

Putnam County Public Library District hosts programs HENNEPIN — Putnam County libraries will have programs coming up in November.

At 6 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 8, the Granville Library will have a Vietnam War veteran sharing his story.

Kenneth Troyan will discuss the Tet Offensive as well as his own time over there. He also has some original music. P.C. Public Library

District is inviting Vietnam veterans to share their stories and memories of the war after the presentation.

At 6 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 14, the Granville Library will have April Casey-Reaska discussing nutritional food for a healthier you.

At 6 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 16, at the Hennepin Library Branch, Vic-

tor Croasdale will present a program on Islam and the Middle East.

He will speak about his journey through the Middle East and help attendees understand the peaceful side of Islam. Discover the arts, culture, food and the theocracy that dominates the region. The presentation will be shown with 35 mm images slides.

Hennepin Park District card party results HENNEPIN — The Hennepin Park District held its monthly senior citizen card party on Oct. 25. Winners playing euchre were Jerry Bejster, Margaret Eattoni, Dave Trainor, Nancy Bejster, Vicki Esposito, Paulette Trainor and Mary Crook.

Cindy Fox-Starr will speak at IVCC for Native American History Month OGLESBY — Illinois Valley Community College’s Diversity Team will host Cindy Fox-Starr’s “Racial Mascots and Urban Natives of Today” at noon Monday, Nov. 13, in CTC125 in honor of Native American History Month.

Fox-Starr of the American Indian Center of Chicago is a first generation urban-born native of full-blood native parents. She has been active in the powwow circle since childhood and has been with the AIC for 12 years.

She has recently been working with the Chicago Blackhawks organization to educate the public about the true history of Blackhawk and urban Natives today.

Annual ‘Sparkling Evening at the Reddick Mansion’

4-H officer training held at IVCC OGLESBY — 4-H members from Bureau, LaSalle, Marshall and Putnam counties gathered together at Illinois Valley Community College for a fun, Halloween-themed 4-H officer training.

Through hands-on activities, participants learned all about their role as a club officer, positive youth development, how to make meetings fun and effective and parliamentary

procedure. They took home many resources that they will be able to use within their 4-H clubs.

4-H clubs are run by youth officers, including a president, vice president, secretary, treasurer and reporter, with the support of adult volunteer leaders. Other offices can also be included like historian and parliamentarian. Officers are responsible for the monthly meet-

ings running smoothly and efficiently, as well as setting the tone for the club and its members. In lending support to their clubs, officers are also learning leadership skills that they will be able to put to use in many settings beyond their 4-H club.

M-P Quilter’s Guild will meet HENRY — The Marshall-Putnam Quilter’s Guild will meet at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 8, at the Henry Presbyterian Church on Wirt Street in Henry. After the business meeting, the program will be given by Judy Murphy. The program is “Ewe Won’t Believe What You Can Do With Wool.” She will also have a trunk show of her wool creations. Guests are always welcome for a small fee.

Tree of Lights begins annual campaign PRINCETON — The Perry Memorial Hospital Auxiliary Tree of Lights Committee kicked off its annual campaign at the Auxiliary Candy Cane event on Nov. 3.

Since 1990, more than $101,000 has been raised and donated to the hospital for needed equipment. This year, donations to the Tree of Lights will be used to two EKG machines, one for Perry Memorial clinics located in Henry and Walnut.

Special stars will be hanging this Christmas at Perry Memorial Hospital on the tree located in the emergency room waiting area. A donation to the Tree of Lights is a unique way to express appreciation by honoring loved ones, friends, teachers, special groups and others. It is also a special way to memorialize someone who has left behind countless memories and friendships.

A donation of $10 will hang a small star on the

tree and a donation of $100 will hang a large star on the tree. When a donation of $20 or more is given, an acknowledgement card will be sent to the person or family the donation is honoring.
