Henderson trial date still set for Dec. 17 Defense unaware if suspect will take the stand during trial

BY DAVE COOK news@putnamcountyrecord.com HENNEPIN — In a Nov. 1 status hearing lasting about a minute in Putnam County Court, the defense attorney for murder suspect Richard A. Henderson told the judge pre-trial motions would be filed by Nov. 6.

Henderson, 26, of Standard is accused in the January killing of a 16-year-old Bureau County girl. He previously decided to waive his right to a jury trial and will have his fate decided by Judge Stephen A. Kouri during a bench trial scheduled to begin Dec. 17.

Henderson faces charges of three counts of murder for the stabbing

death of Diamond Bradley, of Spring Valley. She was last seen by her family on Jan. 23, was reported missing the next day, and her body was found along a rural Putnam County road on Jan. 27.

Henderson was taken into custody on Feb. 5 after investigators linked him to Bradley through interviews, surveillance footage, and cell phone data.

A motions hearing was set for 10 a.m. on Nov. 21.

While Public Defender Roger Bolin didn’t elaborate, he did say after the hearing that a few pre-trial motions will likely be filed and that he had recently received additional evidence to review. He also said he didn’t know whether Henderson would take the stand during his trial.

Putnam County State’s Attorney Christina Judd-Mennie said, “We’re ready,” when asked about the state’s case against Henderson. The prosecution has previously stated it had

an “abundance of evidence.”

Both the prosecution and the defense are expecting the trial to last only three or four days.

Henderson was initially charged with concealment of a homicidal death, a Class 3 felony with a sentencing range of two to five years.

However, Bolin successfully got that charge dropped during a Sept. 6 status hearing.

Bolin argued the 120-day limit of the Speedy Trial Act has been exceeded, and Judd-Mennie agreed to drop the charge to focus on the murder charges.

The three additional first-degree murder charges were entered on Aug. 30, and each carries concurrent $1 million bonds with 10 percent to apply. If convicted, Henderson faces 20 years to life in prison with each felony charge, and would have to serve 100 percent of his sentence.

Henderson previously entered pleas of not guilty on all counts.

Tuesday, Nov. 30. Then the prosecution will have until Jan. 4 to respond, if the timeline is kept.

Andersen, 68, of Standard was sentenced Aug. 24 to 60 years in prison for the murder. He also was found guilty of concealment of a homicidal

death during his two-week trial in July.

He received an additional concurrent sentence of five years in prison for that crime.

Andersen is being held at Stateville Correctional Center.

‘Students are moving in the right direction’ Putnam County’s 2018 Illinois Report Card results released

BY DAVE COOK news@putnamcountyrecord.com GRANVILLE — The Illinois State Board of Education has released the 2018 Illinois Report Card information for the Putnam County School District. Each of the district’s four schools earned a “Commendable” designation.

Commendable schools are those that have no underperforming student groups, a graduation rate greater than 67 percent (Putnam County has an 85 percent graduation rate), and whose performance is not in the top 10 percent statewide.

Funding for PC schools is at 93 percent of the state’s target minimum needed to provide a high-quality education.

“The changes in funding for schools haven’t affected our district as much as it may have for other districts,” Superintendent Carl Carlson said.

“We’re so close to our adequacy target at 93 percent that we don’t see a large amount of additional new dollars flowing. We continue to responsibly utilize our local capacity to offer the best programming we can for our students,” he said.

Carlson said the district’s admin-

istrative team reviews the results each year so they can then assess the next steps needed for improvements.

This year the ISBE expanded the number of indicators used to Carl Carlson demonstrate a deeper Putnam look into each district’s County School success. Some tradi- superintendent tional indicators, such as the PARCC testing for grades 3-8, shows mixed results.

“Our district philosophy is to look at the top three categories, which include meeting, exceeding, and approaching. When you view that numerically across the subjects and grade levels, we’re at or above the state average in numerous areas,” Carlson said.

For example, grade 11 SAT results show that using all three categories in the English Language Arts that PC is at 78 percent versus the 75 percent state average. In Grade 11 SAT Math, PC is at 64 percent versus the 66 percent state average.

Eighty-two percent of PC graduates are enrolled in either a two- or four-year college within 16 months of their graduation.

“This demonstrates students are moving in the right direction and showing growth annually. This also reaffirms the time spent on curriculum review, collaborating with staff across grade levels, monitoring data over the course of the year, and providing a rigorous curriculum are

all important components,” Carlson said.

He added a critical factor that often gets overlooked is student engagement while being assessed.

“It’s very important all our students continue to give their best effort so we get an accurate measurement,” he said.

He also pointed out the reason that PC’s “9th Grade on Track” statistic shows a lower rating than last year. Each year the state uploads data from each student management system and translates that information into statistics.

“Unfortunately, the state pulled this information from our system, but it was translated improperly due to confusion on the number of credits earned each semester. The current report card shows our rate at 78 percent, but realistically when comparing actual credits earned, our number is 86 percent ‘on track,’ which is right on pace with the state average,” Carlson said.

He added that Putnam County takes a team approach in providing the best possible educational opportunities for students, and that there are a lot of moving parts to coordinate in raising student achievement levels.

“This ranges from student and parental support of the schools, the administration and staff continually analyzing our curriculum to maintain high expectations and rigor to provide the necessary supports along the way, and ultimately

the celebration of success.” he said.

The average class size in Putnam County is 15 students, lower than the statewide average of 20 per class.

The local district has a 2018 enrollment of 288 students, which is only one less than in 2014.

Of those students, 36.5 percent are in families receiving public aid, living in substitute care, or eligible to receive free or reduced price lunches. This is a 3 percentage point increase from 2014, but lower than the state average of 49 percent.

PC students are also more physically active than those statewide.

Local students receive 5 days a week of physical education compared to the state’s average of only 3 days per week.

Fifteen percent of PC students receive special education and individualized education programs.

“The one philosophy I like to share, when asked to examine or provide feedback on these types of statistics, is that our students are more than just a number. There’s always a deeper story behind that number. We want to make sure students understand the importance and need to be actively involved in their learning,” Carlson said.

The local district has 69 full-time educators. 62.3 percent of those have a bachelor’s degree and 37.7 percent have earned a master’s degree or higher; 98 percent have been rated by the state as “proficient” or “excellent.”

Marini: Bridge a link to commerce, jobs, emergency aid and families

BY GOLDIE RAPP news@putnamcountyrecord.com SPRING VALLEY — The new Spring Valley bridge, which links Putnam County to Bureau County’s second largest city, symbolizes much more than just eight spans of concrete across the Illinois River.

With its new name, the Illinois Valley Veterans Memorial Bridge, the structure embodies an unwavering, strong and unyielding veteran.

“It’s very name stands as a promise kept by our veterans to you as a citizen of the state of Illinois,” said Scott Buennenmeyer, 9th District Regional Commander of the VFW, during the dedication ceremony for the new Spring Valley bridge on Nov. 1.

“There will be a lot of maintenance done over the lifetime of this bridge. Make sure it doesn’t decay, make sure it doesn’t weaken, and make sure it’s protected. So should it be with our veterans,” he said.

The ceremony, held at Spring Valley Boat Club, brought together Spring Valley officials, engineers and construction crew members who were instrumental in the bridge project, state representatives, members of the Spring Valley VFW, color guard members of Dominic O’Berto Post 182 American Legion, and even two Spring Valley residents, Eva Pienta and Jane Kunkel, who were both present at the dedication

“In simple terms, a bridge is a structure that connects two things.

However, the bridge we’re here to dedicate means so much more. It is a means of bringing people to their places of employment, customers to places of business and service, emergency personnel to the aid of victims, and friends and family to each other. People connecting with people.”

When construction of the bridge was taking place, three members of the Spring Valley VFW Post 3666 —Jim Taylor, Blair Tiger and Dan Savitch — approached state Sen. Sue Rezin and former state Rep. Andy Skoog and suggested the

bridge be named in recognition of the efforts and sacrifices made by the Illinois veterans and their service to the country.

The idea was well received, and on Thursday, Rezin said she was honored to have worked on the bill with Skoog to get the name approved.

“It’s only fitting to have this ribbon cutting very close to Veterans Day. Veterans in the state of Illinois are somebody both parties support.

We need to make sure we continue to honor you,” she said.

The new structure provides improved safety, traffic flow and access for vehicles, pedestrians and bicyclists.

Joe Wick, project implementation engineer for Illinois Department of Transportation, recognized his team who helped oversee the day-today operations of the construction.

Tony Frazzini, project manager

for ICC, which was the construction company hired for the job, recognized his crew members.

“We’re very proud to be involved in a project with this magnitude. It doesn’t get done overnight, and you can’t complete a project with this magnitude without the support and joint effort of everyone involved,” he said.

Throughout the project, ICC placed orders for more than 10,000 yards of concrete and set 5 million pounds of structural steel.

Plans to replace the bridge began in 2010. Construction began in February 2016. The new structure opened to traffic on June 18.

The $41.5 million project involved replacement of the old structure with a new one in a parallel alignment. The old bridge, which was constructed in 1934, was demolished in August.

Arriving in late August from Zimbabwe through Mennonite Central Committee’s 11-month International Volunteer Exchange Program (IVEP), Nomakhosi shares with Hungry World Farm and the broader Tiskilwa community her enthusiasm, love of learning, desire to help build a healthier and more just and peaceful world, and strong professional background in nutrition and dietetics.

Before beginning this year’s IVEP program, she worked as a nutritionist, developing strategies to promote the health of children and to support young mothers.

She has found it satisfying to work in nutrition education because of the significant impact she sees her work making in the lives of those she serves.

Nomakhosi recognizes the healing difference that diverse and balanced diet, adequate nutrition, and healthy lifestyle choices can make in individuals and communities, and she desires to strengthen the systems that

make health-promoting foods and resources more accessible to those in greatest need.

Nomakhosi recognizes the vital connections between the health of humans, lands, foods, food systems, and communities, and she seeks to learn more about, and Melissa Nomakhosi strengthen, these connections while interning with Hungry Ndlovu World Farm.

“In working with HWF, I hope to gain an in-depth knowledge of the food I work with as a nutritionist. I hope it prepares me for being able to answer at any advisory platform involving food,” she said.

She recognizes how a healthy intersection of agriculture and nutrition can holistically transform the life and health of communities, and she plans to promote that transformation through her work now at HWF and in the future through additional studies and an eventual career in Development Policy back in Africa.

She and her co-workers at Hungry World Farm are confident that her experience with Hungry World Farm will provide new insights and skills that will strengthen her ability to respond to the health needs of the times in

Her first months provide a context for reflection on nature and creation, deepening her “appreciation that every living creature has a role in maintaining balance in the ecosystem.”

She has also enjoyed learning to actively recycle everything, and she is growing in her awareness of the cycles and patterns that are a part of life and death.

Hungry World Farm began in the fall of 2017 as a nonprofit organization receiving the former Plow Creek property east of Tiskilwa that includes tillable land, woods, and a native hillside prairie.

Hungry World Farm utilizes the farm as a textbook for healthy, sustainable food production and seeks to empower individuals and communities to strengthen local food systems and reflect on their own consumption and systemic impact on the environment.

The HWF team currently consists of two lead farmers, a steering committee and board of directors, and a growing number of local volunteers.

The warm comfort of a good soup PCCC and U of I Extension share the necessary ingredients

Butternut Squash Soup

BY DAVE COOK news@putnamcountyrecord.com STANDARD — When temperatures drop and families begin to retreat indoors, one of the most common cravings is for a warm bowl of hearty soup.

“Soup has always been a comfort food, and you could probably eat a different soup every day and not repeat yourself,” Susan Glassman, nutrition and wellness educator for the University of Illinois Extension, told those at the Putnam County Community Center (PCCC) on Oct. 23.

Glassman hosted “Hearty Soups and Stews,” a program about the perennial kitchen favorite and reviewed the types of soups, tips to make them their tastiest, their health benefits, several recipes, garnish ideas, storage and reheating, and how to solve common problems.

“There are so many things you can do with soups that are delicious, and one of my favorites which proves this is “Kitchen Sink Soup.”

That’s when you get to use all of the leftovers from the week,” she said, to knowing laughter from her audience.

She added that with the large variety of soups, as well as the list of possible ingredients, that the combinations are endless.

“Soups are a great way to use all of the small quantities of leftover meat and vegetables that routinely accumulate in your refrigerator, and fresh, frozen or canned ingredients can all be used in them,” she said.

Glassman then reviewed the basics of bisques, vegetable soups, cream soups, purees, consomme, chowders, broth and stews. She also provided several tips on reducing sodium and fat content, as well as providing nutritional information

She said rinsing canned vegetables can reduce their sodium content by up to 40 percent, and that as long as a soup is broth or tomato-based, its calorie count will remain reasonable.

“But all of that changes, though, once you begin talking about creambased soups,” she said. “One cup of light whipping cream is 698 calories, and the same amount of half-andhalf adds more than 300 calories.”

By comparison, one cup of stewed tomatoes adds only 66 calories, and chicken broth adds 25. Fat content is also greatly changed depending on your soup’s base. That same cup of whipping cream provides 74 grams

Once the soups are ready to serve, Glassman shared the power a good garnish can create.

Servings: 8 (one-cup servings) Ingredients: 1 cup of chopped carrots 3/4 cup of diced celery 1 medium diced onion 6 cups of cubed butternut squash (about one large squash) 2 tablespoons of olive oil 1/2 teaspoon of ground black pepper 1/2 teaspoon of garlic powder 1 teaspoon of crushed thyme 1 teaspoon of crushed sage 1 teaspoon of rosemary 1/2 teaspoon of fennel seeds 6 cups of chicken or vegetable stock (48oz. package) Directions 1. Wash butternut squash with cold running water. Remove squash skin using a vegetable peeler. Cut and remove the seeds. Cut squash into cubes.

2. In a 6-8 quart soup pot, heat oil. Add onion and saute until caramelized, then layer carrots and celery over the onion, stirring until tender. Sprinkle in the spices, saute until the ingredients are combined and enjoy their aroma.

3. Add squash cubes and toss the vegetable mixture together. Cover with the chicken or vegetable stock. Cover and simmer until tender (approximately 30 minutes). Taste, and salt as needed.

4. Using an immersion blender, blend soup until smooth and creamy. If using a regular blender, let soup cool and blend three cups at a time.

Garnish ideas: Pepitas, goat cheese, dried cranberries, chopped apple, homemade croutons or toasted wheat bread, a dollop of sour cream or heavy cream, in moderation, cracked pepper, freshly chopped sage, toasted walnuts.

Tips for a successful soup • Don’t compromise on quality; lackluster ingredients will make a lackluster soup.

• Saute vegetables in butter or oil before adding them to soup. This seals in their flavor and keeps them firm. Give onions a little extra time because slow cooking brings out their natural sweetness.

• You can make a good soup with water, but a rich, homemade stock will add a depth of flavor that water can’t duplicate.

• Most soups (with the exception of delicate, fresh fruit soups) improve with age and can be made a day or two in advance.

Leftovers can also freeze well.

• It’s easy to de-fat soup if it’s chilled first. The fat will solidify on top and can be

easily removed with a spoon.

• To guard against burns, allow hot soup to cool slightly before pureeing.

• Leftovers make terrific soups. Saute aromatic vegetables, such as onions, carrots and garlic in oil or butter, adding bite-sized pieces of leftover meats, along with a little stock or milk, and simmer until flavorful.

• To ensure soups arrive at the table piping hot, serve them in tureens, lidded bowls or well-heated cups.

• For a rich brown color, brown meat carefully. Commercial coloring can also be used.

• Add a little bouillon to cream soup or a weak homemade stock to increase flavor.

• Always check the sodium content of your broth and add seasonings as needed.

She had prepared a butternut squash soup to share with those attending her program, and offered a variety of garnishes to sample with it, including dried cranberries, feta cheese, minced herbs, croutons and more. She also encouraged home cooks to not be afraid to experiment with the unusual.

After enjoying a bowl of soup, Hennepin resident Pauline Marchiori

shared what she enjoyed about the program.

“This was my first time here, and it was very warm and had a nice sense of togetherness. My favorite soup is homemade vegetable, but the squash soup we sampled was delicious,” she said.

“I liked that we learned how to substitute ingredients to make it healthier and also how to saute vegetables in olive oil to seal in their flavor,” JoAnne Walden of Cedar Point said.

On Oct. 30, Granville Cemetery Board members and their guests held a retirement dinner for Arch Hopkins at the Liberty Family Restaurant in Peru. Joining the board in 1989, Hopkins served as the chair of the Finance Committee. Presenting Hopkins with a plaque of appreciation was President John Holmbeck. Also in attendance were board members Jack Ossola, Donald Naumann, Richard Fiedler, James Barnes, Robert Steele and Barbara Kessler, as well as the new member to the board, Michael Gonet. The cemetery has been in existence since 1863 and is totally not-for-profit.

Mr. and Mrs. John Sandberg of McNabb will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary.

John Sandberg and the former Trudy Capponi were married June 1, 1968, at St. Ann’s Church in Toluca.

They are the parents of three children, Sean (Cherie) Sandberg of McNabb, Traci (Richard) Presthus of Pekin and Ryan (Brandy) Sandberg of McNabb. They also have eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Foundation for success GRANVILLE — The Starved Rock Country Community Foundation is a new and growing fund with a lot to offer throughout Putnam, Bureau and LaSalle counties. The SRCCF’s president, Pamela Beckett, was the featured speaker at the Sept.

27 meeting of the Putnam County Rotary Club, hosted and introduced

by Putnam County Rotarian Reed Wilson.

The Foundation was formed late in 2015 to offer grants to local non-profit organizations, while managing and distributing scholarships and providing philanthropic direction for individual donors, corporations and non-profit agencies. In hardly two years of fundraising, the Foundation has raised more than $1.5 million in both restricted and designated donations plus investment earnings. Almost $600,000 has already been distributed for charitable purposes throughout the three counties.

Funds will impact education,

health care, the environment, those who are homeless or in need of basic foods, the arts, children, economic development and tourism, as well as existing non-profit agencies. Donors can designate when, why and how funds will be disbursed. Family foundations and endowed funds can be gifted to and invested by the SRCCF. Most of these funds, and even scholarships, can be established with a gift of as small as $1,000.

The Foundation takes care of the preparation, administration, investment and award or distribution of the funds for the donors with the assistance of an educated team of advisors who ensure the dollars are fairly and appropriately handled according to the wishes of the donor.

New interpretive trail is open at Starved Rock State Park OGLESBY — A new interpretive trail opened Oct. 11 at Starved Rock.

“The trail cuts through the woods and runs from the main parking lot of the lodge to the overflow parking area,” said Edna Daugherty, lodge activities director. “This flat trail is easy to navigate and serves a purpose of allowing safe passage from the overflow lot to the Lodge and one

of the main trailheads.”

Daugherty began working on the project over a year ago when a newly passed House Bill 3455 allowed the public to maintain a trail. Daugherty pitched her idea to Lodge CEO Amy Trimble, Kerry Novak (park superintendent) and the Starved Rock Walkers Club, which now has over 40 active member who hike togeth-

er every Thursday morning. Once everyone agreed, Daugherty began to gather content for the 11 interpretive signs that would be installed along the trail. The signs detail the history, beauty and legends of Starved Rock Lodge and State Park. Together, with the Walkers Club, they raised the funds to pay for the production and installation of those signs.

Daugherty is hopeful that the interpretive trail will soon be made ADA compliant so even more visitors can enjoy the beauty of Starved Rock.

Boyles honored for contributions to Illinois Valley Community College OGLESBY — A crowd of about 35 friends, relatives and college staff attended a ceremony Oct. 15 honoring Walter Durley and Hazel Marie Boyle posthumously for their contributions to Illinois Valley Community College.

The Boyles’ bequest of more than $620,000 to the IVCC Foundation helped fund major upgrades to the Dr. Mary Margaret Weeg Cultural Centre, such as theatre seating, wooden wall treatments, LED house lighting and ADA accessibility.

“Durley’s embrace of IVCC was part of his core belief that higher education enhances lives,” said IVCC President Jerry Corcoran, emcee for the event. “His contributions to IVCC in life will carry on long after his death thanks to the provisions he made for the college in his will.”

Corcoran credited Durley’s nieces Nancy Hopkins and Sally Boyle for helping facilitate the bequest and ensuring proper recognition for their uncle and aunt. Hopkins and Boyle are daughters of Durley’s brother Francis.

life, Durley, ever the country gentleman, said modestly, ‘Everyone has to work to make a community strong,’” Brolley remarked in his closing. “We were blessed the Boyles called our community home and embraced this college as if it were their own.”

PRINCETON — The Prairie Arts Council has announced tryouts for its winter production, “Greater Tuna.”

Tryouts will be Friday, Nov. 9, and Saturday, Nov. 10, starting at 7 p.m. Tryouts will be held in the PAC theater, 24 Park Ave. East in Princeton.

Director Dixie Schroeder will be looking for two men, ages 18 and up, to play radio disc jockeys, as well as a wide variety of local residents of the “third smallest town” in the state of Texas.

The play was written by Jaston Williams, Joe Sears and Ed Howard. The play is at once an affectionate comment on small-town, Southern life and attitudes but also a withering satire of same.

The play is notable in that two men play the entire cast of more than 20 eccentric characters of both genders and various ages.

Governor makes announcement regarding growth of Starved Rock, Matthiessen parks

Bruce Rauner announced Oct. 25 the state recently acquired 2,629 acres of property in LaSalle County near Oglesby “to protect natural resources and expand recreation opportunities, tourism and economic development near Starved Rock and Matthiessen state parks.”

Making the announcement at Starved Rock Lodge, Rauner explained, “More than 3 million people visit Starved Rock and Matthiessen state parks each year. They are among the most beautiful destinations in our state.

“This expansion, contiguous to existing parks, increases the amount of open space that will be managed and protected there by more than 50 percent and gives people even more reasons to enjoy the outdoors in LaSalle County,” the governor said.

Illinois Department of Natural Resources Director Wayne Rosenthal said the state acquired the reclaimed mining land from Lone Star Industries Inc. for $11 million. The money, Rosenthal said, came from the Open Lands Trust, which was established to acquire property for conservation and recreation purposes.

Rosenthal, while praising Starved Rock, noted the additional acreage is a great move for the state and local communities.

“If Starved Rock was a national park, it would fall into the top 10 (sites) in the nation,” he said.

Lone Star Industries — along with its predecessor companies — has owned much of the property since the early 1900s. The land originally was mined for coal. It also has been mined for limestone and used as a site for cement manufacturing.

Both Rauner and Rosenthal said, thanks to Lone Star’s mined land reclamation, the existing forested areas, lakes and a stretch of the scenic Vermilion River is ideally suited for development of outdoor recreational uses.

Development details According to an IDNR release, the agency will manage the acquired property as part of the Starved Rock/Matthiessen state park complex. Rosenthal said planning will soon be underway to restore forest, prairie and wildlife habitat, develop trails, a campground, picnic areas, and boat, canoe and kayak access, as well as foster horseback riding, cross country skiing, fishing and hunting opportunities.

An enthused Kerry Novak, Starved Rock Complex superintendent, said the new park land is “quite scenic and beautiful. It includes Wild Cat Rapids on the Vermilion (River), several ponds and the former Bailey Falls area.”

“I want to thank Gov. Rauner for his vision in supporting this expansion of our busiest state park complex — and thank Lone Star Industries for working with the state to make this property available for the use and enjoyment of area residents and visitors from throughout the state, the nation, and around the world,” Rosenthal said.

“Opportunities like this don’t come around very often, and we’re delighted to add this parcel to Starved Rock and Matthiessen for the enjoyment of visitors for generations to come.”

Oglesby Mayor Donald FInley called the expansion acquisition great for his city and surrounding communities.

“We’ll be looking forward to and hoping Oglesby will be deeply involved in the state’s future plans

(for the property).”

Asked after the announcement if public parking for the popular parks will be improved with the land purchase, Rosenthal said he thought it would give the state that opportunity for improvement, but it would be at least a year before proper plans for the property will make it available for public use.

“Starved Rock and Matthiessen state parks are gems for the Illinois Valley and the state,” said state Sen. Sue Rezin, R-Morris. “The beauty of these parks is unmatched in Illinois, and this new land acquisition will only add to the pleasurable experience for visitors.

“This is great news for the area and will provide an additional boost to economic development and tourism as people will want to explore these areas, watch the wildlife, and see more of Illinois in an exciting new way. The expansion will add to the already rich natural resources portfolio of the region, especially when we market Starved Rock and Matthiessen state parks beyond our borders,” Rezin said.
