$100,000 nature project planned near Hennepin by wetlands group

More trails, birdwatching platform, natural restoration envisioned

BY CRAIG STERRETT Shaw Media HENNEPIN — Volunteers and scientists have spent 18 years building trails and restoring wetlands, lakes and prairie throughout a more than 3,000-acre nature area south of Hennepin.

But they have not done much work at the northeast corner of the Dixon Waterfowl Refuge.

That’s about to change, as The Wetlands Initiative received an $18,045 wildlife habitat grant from Illinois Department of Natural Resources for restoration of the 42-acre Violet Meadow south of Coffee Creek.

“It’s an area where we had never really done any intensive restoration,” Vera Leopold, grants manager for The Wetlands Initiative, said. Chicago-based TWI is a private entity but keeps the nature area open to the public.

Starting in 2001, TWI turned off pumps that had been used by farmers to drain a natural Illinois River backwater area, and then clean water came in to create Hennepin-Hopper Lakes within the former drainage district’s levees.

Violet Meadow parallels Route 26 near the north levee, near a roadway that leads to the existing Oak Ridge Trail.

TWI will provide more than $92,000 in matching funds for the initial project in the Violet Meadow area as well as a total of 195 acres including seeding, planting native prairie plugs, disconnecting tile and drainage lines and prescribed burns for restoration of mesic prairie, according to the DNR. Leopold said the work initially will focus on management of aggressive cattails and removal of invasive honeysuckle, both of which “are really starting to dominate that area.”

Leopold said they named the area Violet Meadow because four types of native violets grow in one of the “seep” areas within the 42 acres, and TWI plans to introduce one other native violet.

TWI plans to create a trail loop southeast to the violet meadow, and eventually plans to install a platform for birdwatchers. The acreage also includes wetlands, woodlands and sedge meadow.

The Wetlands Initiative submitted a map of its next restoration project on its property near Hennepin. The organization can focus on the northeast corner of the site after receiving more than $18,000 in grant money for more than $100,000 worth of native wildlife habitat restoration work.

“Our goal is to get a portion of trail done in the next two years,” Leopold said.

What’s been happening lately?

Local site manager Rick Seibert said until recently, he had not heard much about the next project, but nature lovers should like the addition.

He said the southern part of Hennepin-Hopper Lakes, near the boat ramp, has attracted a lot of birdwatchers lately.

In addition to all kinds of ducks

dropping in, birders have been showing up this fall to see a bird that they want to add to their lists of birds they’ve seen in their lives, the glossy ibis.

The bird’s range has been spreading from the southeast, but they were rare here.

Boat operator cited in fatal crash near Hennepin

Autopsy performed on 53-year-old victim

BY CRAIG STERRETT AND BRETT HERRMANN Shaw Media HENNEPIN — Still investigating a fatal accident from Oct. 25, Illinois Conservation Police said a boat that crashed into a log after dark on the Illinois River had only one personal flotation device for the five people on board.

Area firefighters searched for a lit-

tle less than an hour and recovered the body of Audiel Trujillo Perez, 53, from Michoacan, Mexico, said Putnam County Death Investigator Bob Cofoid.

Illinois Conservation Police Sgt. Phil Wire said Perez was fishing with family members when the

accident occurred.

Boat operator Audiel Ramirez, 48, of Schiller Park faces charges of operating while under the influence, operating with blood-alcohol content of 0.08 or greater and careless operation of a watercraft, Wire said.

He said citations also were issued to the boat operator for having too many people aboard and not having enough life jackets or flotation devices.

Wire said five people in a fishing boat rated for four occupants had gone fishing, working their way downstream about four or five miles from Hennepin. Wire said reportedly the fishing was good, which is why they fished until sunset or after.

He said as they were returning to Hennepin, before 7 p.m., the boat struck a log and Perez was ejected into the water. From what he gathered in interviews that lasted until 4 a.m. Oct. 26, Wire said he believed

the boat operator or occupants were not familiar with that stretch of the river and were navigating in the dark or near-dark.

Wire said the group searched for 15-20 minutes for the man who went overboard, and then called 911 around 7:15 p.m. He said the boat received heavy damage and could have sunk. However, the pump on board was working, and they were able to beach the boat.

Henry, Hennepin and Standard fire departments responded to the call, along with Putnam and Marshall county sheriff ’s departments and Putnam County EMS ambulance crew members. After almost two hours of searching, Henry Fire Department found the body approximately one-half mile downstream from the accident site.

Peru Rescue Station also was dispatched to the scene after 8 p.m., and arrived not long before Henry fire-

fighters found the body.

Cofoid said he is awaiting final results of an autopsy. Toxicology is pending and may take four to six weeks before completion. Perez was pronounced dead at 10:30 p.m. Oct. 25 when the remains were transported to the Hennepin boat launch

by Henry Fire Rescue, Cofoid said.

Wire said he has to file a report with the U.S. Coast Guard because of injury/fatality and more than $2,000 damage. Illinois Conservation Police took possession of the boat, pending investigation. The boat is a total loss, he said.

The Putnam County Death Investigator’s Office is awaiting final results from the autopsy. The investigation is continuing with the state of Illinois Conservation Police, Putnam County Sheriff ’s Office, Putnam County States Attorney’s Office and the Putnam County Death Investigator’s Office.

ILLINOIS VALLEY PADS

PADS’ 28th season serves the homeless in LaSalle, Bureau, Putnam counties Season 28 of Illinois Valley PADS is underway, serving local homeless people in LaSalle, Bureau and Putnam counties.

Ottawa PADS opened its doors Aug. 15, while Peru PADS opened its doors Sept. 1.

The Ottawa shelter will run through end of school year. The

Peru shelter will operate through May 31, 2020. Daily hours of operation are from 5 p.m. to 9 a.m.

IV PADS, founded by Sister Margaret Suerth in 1991, began by placing mattress pads on the floors of local churches and volunteers serving food donated by local hospitals.

Each night, the pads were packed up

and moved to new locations.

From those humble beginnings, IV PADS today operates shelters in Ottawa and Peru, where homeless individuals, who are at least 18 years of age, as well as families are offered a secure place to stay each night, three meals a day and laundry and shower facilities.

Its comprehensive prog rams include case management, assessments, individualized service plans, educational opportunities, support group services and professional referrals. Personal items such as toiletries, clothing, medicine and other necessities are distributed as needed.

Ninety percent of the people who take advantage of IV PADS services are local. This past shelter season, PADS served 338 individuals, which included 35 families with a total of 70 children.

Three jobs eliminated, seven won’t be filled as income falls 7.9%

BY GOLDIE RAPP news@putnamcountyrecord.com PRINCETON — Perry Memorial Hospital’s final audit report for fiscal year 2019 has identified a $3.4 million loss from operations, which will result in the elimination of 10 positions, seven currently unfilled, along with other planned cost savings.

patients with government-funded care, such as Medicare and Medicaid, versus patients with commercial insurance.

The secondary change is the shift from inpatient care to outpatient and observation hospital care, the release stated.

Annette Schnabel, Perry’s CEO and president, said Perry provides the same care to all patients, and costs remain the same.

“We do not receive the same level of reimbursement for our observation patients, in fact it is much less,” she said.

The $3.4 million loss makes up 7.9 percent of Perry’s annual net revenue.

To respond to this budget shortfall, Perry is trimming its expenses. As of last week, one clinical and two

support staff positions have been eliminated, and seven currently open positions will not be filled.

Perry is also reviewing supply costs while establishing checks and balances in its current fiscal year.

Employees were notified of the changes via email earlier last week.

Despite the job reductions, Schnabel said all patient care needs will continue to be met with remaining staff.

These changes will not impact the ongoing discussions Perry is currently having with OSF HealthCare regarding partnership options.

“Perry initiated the conversation with OSF due to the changes in health care delivery and the ability to provide for technology and care coordination. For Perry, that need continues to be the purpose behind

the conversations,” Schnabel said.

The changes also will not impact the current construction of Perry’s Family Health Clinic building, located at 535 Park Avenue East. The 15,000-square-foot building is still on schedule to be complete in February 2020. The exterior structure is nearing completion, and work will continue in the interior as winter sets in.

“Perry’s primary focus has always been to be the local heath care provider and an employer of many great people today, tomorrow and into the future,” Schnabel said.

Perry Memorial Hospital is a cityowned, not-for-profit hospital that dates back to 1903. The 25-bed critical access facility is one of Bureau County’s largest employers with a workforce of approximately 375 people.

Warrant arrests • On Oct. 22, Steven A. Prokup, 48, of Spring Valley turned himself in at the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office on a failure to appear warrant out of Putnam County for bad checks. Prokup posted bond and was released.

Michael D. Willis, 34, is in custody at the LaSalle County Jail, needing $100,000 for release.

He is charged with manufacturing/ delivery of heroin between 1 and 15 grams. The class 1 felony carries a 4- to 15-year prison sentence, if convicted.

County Sheriff’s Office arrested Edward B. Lopez, 31, of Mendota on a failure to appear traffic warrant out of LaSalle County. Lopez was also wanted for two counts of domestic battery by the Mendota Police that had occurred earlier that morning in Mendota. Lopez was taken to the LaSalle County Jail.

BUREAU COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE Hunters rescued after boat capsizes Saturday in Illinois River SPRING VALLEY — Three hunters whose boat capsized Saturday morning in the Illinois River were rescued safely, according to a news release from the Bureau County Sheriff’s Office.

Bureau County Sheriff Jim Reed stated that at approximately 10:15 a.m. Nov. 2, deputies responded to a report of a boat that flipped over on the Illinois River, near a private hunting club, with three males in the water.

The hunters were able to exit the water and were rescued by a passing boat, Reed stated.

Agencies responding to the scene were the Bureau County Sheriff’s Office, Spring Valley Police Department, Illinois DNR Conservation Police, 10/33 Ambulance, Spring Valley Fire Department, Peru Fire Department and Standard Fire Department.

Reed stated the incident remains under investigation by the Illinois DNR Conservation Police.

Oct. 23 at a north Peru parking lot near Interstate 80 and Route 251. He fled along Interstate 80 into Bureau County.

Authorities found his vehicle in Wyanet, and then Willis shortly after in a residential garage.

Willis was appointed a public defender. He is scheduled to appear in court for an arraignment next at 9 a.m. Friday, Nov. 22, in Judge H. Chris Ryan’s courtroom.

Willis may face further charges, according to officials.

Two regional banks announce merger deal

MENDOTA — In a Nov. 1 news release, the board of directors of Tri County Financial Group Inc., the holding company for First State Bank, and the board of directors of H.F. Gehant Bancorp Inc., the holding company for H.F. Gehant Banking Co., announced the companies have signed a definitive agreement outlining the terms of the acquisition of H.F. Gehant Banking Co. by Tri-County Financial Group through the merger of H.F. Gehant Bancorp with Tri-County Financial Group.

Subject to the parties receiving regulatory and shareholder approval by the shareholders of H.F. Gehant Bancorp and satisfying certain other closing contingencies set forth in the definitive agreement, the parties anticipate the consolidation will be completed in either the first or early second quarter of 2020.

As part of the agreement, each party’s banking subsidiaries (H.F. Gehant Banking Co. and First State Bank) will be merged and after such merger will operate under the First

State Bank name. The release stated this consolidation will bring together two long-standing Illinois community banking institutions.

H.F. Gehant Banking Co. has approximately $59 million in total assets and has locations in West Brooklyn and Triumph.

First State Bank has approximately $1.137 billion in total assets and has locations in Mendota, Batavia, Bloomington, Geneva, LaMoille, McNabb, North Aurora, Ottawa, Peru, Princeton, Rochelle, Shabbona, St. Charles, Streator, Sycamore and Waterman.

STARVED ROCK STATE PARK

Specialists suggest looking at what other gateways do SHAW MEDIA Discouraging visits to Starved Rock State Park and surrounding attractions was not one of the suggested solutions to overcrowding and other issues in a report released recently.

Instead, in seeking solutions for one of America’s busiest state or national parks, research specialists indicated the Illinois Department of Natural Resources, Starved Rock Lodge and surrounding communities should follow some examples from other parts of the United States.

“The underlying strategy is that Illinois can draw on proven ideas from elsewhere and anticipated future recreation interests of Illinois residents to create a balanced solution for Starved Rock,” said Mim Evans, a Northern Illinois University-based research specialist who worked with IDNR and Starved Rock Lodge. Other NIU-based specialists conducting the study were Andy Blanke, Abigail Evans and Norm Walzer.

To address overcrowding and other issues, the Illinois Department of Natural Resources and Starved Rock Lodge turned to NIU’s Center for Governmental Studies. They asked CGS to research ways to improve the visitor experience, protect natural resources and work with nearby communities that provide services to park and lodge visitors.

Suggestions from the research findings include new ways to manage visitors, Evans said.

• “Reservation systems like one used at Enchanted Rock State Park in Fredericksburg, Texas, seem to work by controlling access, allowing for flexibility and data gathering, redirecting visitors to low visitation days, delivering pre-visit education and collecting fees,” she said.

The pathway between Tonty and LaSalle canyons shows a huge amount of erosion, a excessive amount of tree roots are exposed, and the trailway logs holding the path have given way to the right, leaving a soft and dangerous path to walk across. Tonty Canyon was closed due to the excessive amount of accidents in recent years, and LaSalle Canyon is well on its way to the same fate if it doesn’t get the necessary help, closing down some of the most visited sites in the park.

• Creating broad-based public support for Starved Rock State Park and Lodge will make it easier to sustain and improve both over the long run. Adding a variety of new large- or small-scale facilities is a possible strategy for broadening support, the research shows.

• Large-scale facilities such as treetop rope and zip line courses, expanded museums and education centers, and water play areas can bring in new visitors while possibly diverting some visitors from overcrowded trails, creating

a better experience for everyone. These kinds of facilities also can make a state park more of an overnight attraction, growing the local economy.

• Private-public partnerships can make these projects affordable to build and manage. Smallscale improvements such as disc golf and dog parks are relatively inexpensive to install and operate, and they can generate revenue that more than supports their maintenance.

For Starved Rock, it’s all about finding the right balance,” Evans said.

“Critical are ways to enhance the visitor experience, preserve the natural resources, find funding sources, and build support from the surrounding communities by providing opportunities to grow the local economy.”

‘State’s most popular park’ The CGS noted that Starved Rock State Park attracts as many visitors as major national parks.

“As the state’s most popular park, it has struggled with overcrowding certain days, necessitating closing the gates when parking lots fill, as occurred over Labor Day weekend,” CGS noted.

The research findings are contained in “Starved Rock State Park & Lodge: Options for the Future,” a report recently released to IDNR and Lodge management.

The NIU Center noted that the completion of the CGS report is particularly timely with the recent addition of 2,629 acres to the west side of Starved Rock State Park and Matthiessen State Park adjacent to Oglesby. It’s also timely, CGS said,

because of legislative consideration of charging entry fees to generate additional funding.

In developing the report for Starved Rock, Evans and the CGS team drew from actual projects and successful experiences at state and national parks across the nation.

Evans said certain questions needed to be answered for Starved Rock: Who visits the park? What is the relationship between the park and the surrounding area? Are there trends in demographics and interests that should be considered? Do other states have effective strategies for their most popular parks?

As they worked to answer those questions, CGS researchers followed a methodology that included learning from IDNR, park and lodge management; surveying visitors, states, businesses and agencies; researching trends; and interviewing management at parks in other states.

The economic impact of the park and lodge also was considered.

DAR surpasses 1 million members since its founding Chief Senachwine Chapter marks milestone by celebrating its members HENRY — This fall, the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) will surpass 1 million total members who have joined the organization since its founding in 1890. The DAR is a women’s service organization whose members can trace their lineage to an individual who contributed to securing American independence during the Revolutionary War. The Chief Senachwine DAR Chapter, based in Henry, has welcomed a total of 20 new members since its founding on Feb. 5, 2018.

The chapter is excited to join the National Society in celebrating the millionth-member milestone by spotlighting members of Chief Senachwine.

Although the chapter has been in existence only 19 months, its membership includes many remarkable women from the area.

Adelaide Flanigan of Lacon joined DAR in 1972 and became an organizing member of Chief Senachwine in 2018. For 29 years, she worked in the Marshall County Sheriff’s Department as an office manager. Retiring in 2012, she now serves the chapter as assistant treasurer and local DAR Service for Veterans co-chairwoman. She holds the position of Hopewell Township clerk and enjoyed her first experience as an election judge.

Florence Finfgeld of Henry became a charter member of the chapter in August 2018. She has devoted time to a number of local charities, including volunteer social work at Lacon and Henry

nursing homes, and serves as vice president and textile chairman of the Marshall County Historical Society and Museum, where she organized an architectural tour of homes for historic preservation.

She serves the chapter as historian/librarian and women’s suffrage anniversary chairwoman.

Christine Jones joined DAR in 2012 encouraged by her sister’s interest in genealogy. During college, she fulfilled a desire for adventure by joining a sport parachuting club and, upon graduating, joined the Women’s Army Corps. Her major posting was the American sector of Berlin, Germany, when the city was still behind the Iron Curtain. Since leaving the service, she has lobbied the U.S. House and Senate to improve veterans’ health care.

These are just three of the 1 million women who have joined DAR since 1890. Each DAR member has a unique story, but all share a passion for historic preservation, education, and patriotism and a dedication to her local community.

The Chief Senachwine DAR Chapter focuses much of its efforts by recognizing activities of local groups via Community Service and Historic Preservation awards, honoring Good Citizens among high school seniors and interacting with veterans in a variety of ways. The chapter encourages women interested in DAR membership or desiring to arrange to visit a meeting in order to become acquainted with the chapter to contact 815-303-1034.

Through the DAR Genealogical Research System (www.dar.org/ GRS), the public can access a free database of information amassed by the DAR about patriots who fought for America’s freedom.

GRANVILLE — In September 2017, Hurricane Maria devastated Puerto Rico. Nearly 3,000 people died — more than 60 in the hurricane and the rest from the crippling of health, power, water and other systems for months after the storm.

The Granville United Church of Christ (UCC) Mission Team will be working in Puerto Rico Feb. 9-15, 2020. The Granville UCC Mission Team was founded in response to Hurricane Katrina. The Mission Team spends one week each year helping to rebuild homes damaged in natural disasters. The Mission Team is an ecumenical group of adults based in the Illinois Valley, but with members traveling from other states. They have responded to disasters in Biloxi, Miss., Joplin, Mo., Moore, Okla., St. Augustine, Fla., and Daytona Beach, Fla. The Granville UCC Mission Team is funded through donations and needs help with the additional expenses for this year’s trip. Donations can be sent to: Granville UCC, P.O. While much progress has been made since Maria first made landfall, many people are still struggling to get enough food, access

social services, like health care, and cope with the emotional stress of losing homes and loved ones.

It will take years for the island to fully recover.

The UCC has contributed substan-

tial funding to the joint UCC-IEUPR project of restoring Maria-damaged homes, especially the repair of roofs (105 in all as of August), and has helped recruit volunteers (420 in all as of August).

Paducah. She is the author of the C&T book titled “Impressionist Applique – Exploring Vaue and Design to Create Artistic Quilts.” She is the authority

Omicron members present skit OTTAWA — “God Bless America” was the theme of the Oct. 15 meeting of the Omicron Chapter of the Delta Kappa Gamma Society International at Pitstick Pavilion in Ottawa.

Six Omicron members presented a skit about American history that included historic statesmen along with national symbols and landmarks. Paula Freepartner portrayed the teacher with Janna Greanias, Alaina Wetherford, Marilee Applebee and Fran Ogden being the students. Teresa Cameron, the class joker, provided many comical moments during the classroom history lesson written for second graders. Patty Hopkins added patriotic decorations as well as leading the group in patriotic songs.

The business meeting was conducted by President Mary Sue Myers. Myers shared highlights from the executive board meeting she attended in September. After general announcements, the slate of officers for the 2020-22 biennium

was presented: Heather Reardon of Ottawa and Linda Ernst of Princeton, co-presidents; Paula Freepartner of Seneca, first vice president; Judy Hooper of Ottawa, second vice president; Marilee Applebee of Seneca, recording secretary; and Mary Jo Farrell of Ottawa, corresponding secretary. These officers will be voted on at the Nov. 19 meeting, which will be held at Pitstick Pavilion with Omicron member Alaina Wetherford giving a book talk on numerous titles from kindergarten through adult.

YCAMORE — RoseMarie Treml noted that there are pumpkins on display near the stone welcome signs near Sycamore’s downtown, welcoming visitors to the historic district. People in the community had put them there around mid-October, preparing for the Sycamore Pumpkin Festival.

They were still there at the end of the month, undistributed for weeks, even after the festival.

“How many towns do you know that you could actually put pumpkins out on a corner of a Main Street and, and they’re still there?” she said. “That’s just the way it is in Sycamore. ... I wish I could tell you what it is because if I knew, I’d bottle it up and sell it.”

Treml has been executive director of the Sycamore Chamber of Commerce since 2002. She had lived in Sycamore for six years before then, but worked at the Geneva Chamber of Commerce working in events and marketing.

Earlier this year, she joined Shaw Media Illinois’ Corporate Advisory Board, a group of professional leaders from around northern Illinois who are helping the company as it charts its future course.

“Chambers (of commerce) have a huge impact on the community as a whole,” Treml said. “We do everything from helping businesses succeed to creating events to bring people downtown. ... It’s economic development.”

The Sycamore chamber has more than 500 members. Former Mayor Ken Mundy said that membership has probably doubled since Treml took over.

“The chamber has been a huge part of the city for so long,” he said.

“Rose strengthened the chamber’s position in the city.”

Mundy was Sycamore’s city treasurer when Treml was named executive director. He worked closely with her in that role, and their working relationship continued after he was elected mayor in 2005.

He said, at one point, some people on the City Council were skeptical about the city’s annual subsidy to the chamber and whether it was right to use public funds to fund the organization.

Mundy said Treml changed the view of the doubters.

The chamber of commerce serves several roles for the community, Treml said. It promotes tourism in

“That’s the Discover Sycamore part,” Treml said. “The other part is what most chambers do. ... We help businesses market and promote themselves to residents and to other businesses.”

Although Treml spends a lot of hours at working at the chamber — “She works hard. People have no idea the hours she works,” Mundy says — Treml is also involved in a number of local boards and non-profit events.

She serves as a director for the DeKalb County Economic Development Corporation, Kishwaukee Valley YMCA and Kishwaukee College Foundation. She is also on the City of Sycamore Growth Management Committee and City of Sycamore Economic Development Committee.

Dave Juday, former CEO at Sycamore-based IDEAL Industries, said he worked with Treml on many events, involving workforce development in the community.

This past summer, Treml helped organize the Sycamore Strong fundraiser following a fire that destroyed a building at the city’s St. Albans Green apartment complex in July. More than 120 people were displaced by the fire that destroyed Building A of the complex.

The fire was on a Saturday night, and crews fought it into the early hours of Sunday. On Sunday morning, Treml said she received a call from David Miller of the band Back Country Roads.

“He said ‘We want to help,’” Treml remembered. Blumen Gardens

provided event space, and Taxco Restaurant organized local bars to provide alcohol, Sycamore United Methodist Church Youth Ministries designed and sold T-shirts and, by 4 p.m., Treml said, the fundraiser was planned. “It was put together literally within four hours.”

The event raised more than $73,000 for victims of the fire, Treml said, with community members dropping checks off in the office. Treml said Ideal helped by matching donations.

Each year, Treml also helps organize the 10K Sycamore Pumpkin Run during Pumpkin Fest. In 2009, she remembered, she brought the tradition abroad. Teaming up with the Illinois National Guard, Treml worked with a team to bring the Pumpkin Run to Kuwait.

When she’s not working, Treml said she likes to spend time with her two grown children, Keri, who teaches third grade in Michigan, and Colan, who will be graduating college shortly.

Treml said she couldn’t describe what makes the Sycamore community special. She said Mundy used to say once you dip your toes in the Kishwaukee River, you’ll be back.

“She’s a strong, professional woman,” Mundy said. “She’s a great mom, a great worker for the chamber, and a lovely, lovely lady.”

“I really thought we ran an effective offense tonight, and we had a lot of good, hard swings in both sets,” said PC coach Amy Bell. “We made a number of good decisions on tips as well, and like I tell the girls, ‘A kill is recorded the same way whether it’s a tip or it’s slammed down.’

“We played a very smart match, and that (smartness) has developed as the season as went on as far as playing. We have done a very good job of using our strengths to our advantage. I also felt we were aggressive at the net while also hitting or tipping the ball into open areas.”

The celebration is the annual banquet to award grant funding to worthy organizations in Starved Rock Country who empower and enhance the lives of women and children.

This year, three worthy organizations who support youths, teens, young parents and consumers will

receive grants. The event is open to the public and will feature music of violinist Casey McGrath at Deer Park Country Club. Doors open at 1:30 p.m. for music and cocktails, followed by heavy appetizers and socializing.

The grant funding presentation will follow with checks presented by the WIN organization to the Starved Rock Associates for Vocational Training and Educational Assistance at IVCC, the LGBQT+ Youth Outlook Teen Center and the Ottawa Food Basket Client Choice Program.

All qualified non-profit organiza-

tions are welcome to apply for the WIN competitive grants each year, and the finalists present their case for support to the WIN membership, who then vote for the grant recipients. Combined, the goods and services from this year’s winning agencies reach the entire Starved Rock Country area.

Tickets are $35 per person and include the buffet stations and entertainment. Reservations and prepayment are required. Checks may be mailed to the SRCCF, 718 Columbus St., Ottawa, and credit card payments may be made online at srccf.org.
