Deputy announces run for Putnam County sheriff

Brian Gonet is seeking the Republican nomination in June 2022 Deputy Brian Gonet has officially announced his candidacy for the Putnam County sheriff. He will be seeking the Republican nomination in the June 28, 2022, primary election.

Gonet lives with his wife and three children in Granville. He began his career in law enforcement in 2012 with Granville Police Department. In 2016, he was promoted to sergeant. During this time he was responsible for scheduling, patrol, investigations and training new officers.

In 2019, Gonet took the opportunity to work for the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office as a deputy. Along with regular duties, he has been tasked with running a drug awareness program in the junior high during the 2019-20 school year and is an ALICE instructor to help educate schools and businesses to prepare for active shooter situations.

Gonet has been very active in his community with church, youth sports and helping continue the Backpack Ministry supporting children in the Putnam County School District.

McKee re-elected as group director of CBAI

Kim McKee, president/CEO of North Central Bank in Hennepin, was re-elected as group director of the Community Bankers Association of Illinois (CBAI) at the association’s annual convention held recently in Chicago. As a group director, she serves on the CBAI board of directors, as well as its strategic planning and membership committees.

McKee received her Bachelor of Science in Economics from Illinois State University in Normal. She is a graduate of CBAI’s Community Banking School, Bloomington, and the Graduate School of Banking, University of Wisconsin, Madison.

McKee began her banking career in 1994. From 1998 to the present, she has worked at North Central Bank, Hennepin, where she has had the opportunity to work in all areas of the bank. She is currently the president/CEO and director at the bank.

She has served on the Community BancService Corporation board of directors. She is currently on the CBAI board of directors, is a strategic planning committee member, and

is serving on the special events committee. She has been the chairwoman for CBAI’s Foundation for Community Banking since 2016.

McKee civil duties include serving as a board member of the Hall Township Food Pantry - Project Success of Eastern Bureau County, and as an executive board member with the Upper Illinois River Valley Community Development Corporation.

Putnam County Brownie Troop 1037 recently held a One Can, Two Can, You Can Good Neighbor Food Drive. The food drive was a huge success! The Girl Scouts went around and handed out HyVee bags to their neighbors to fill and leave for them to pick back up. For friends, families and neighbors that did not receive a bag, there were also donation boxes located at local businesses. All donations were donated to the Putnam County Rotary Club Micro-Pantry. Ryan Thompson, a Henry native, remembered fondly by his peers, will be playing Roger Herbranson, a fasttalking salesman, witty and a bit of a kaniver. Roger has a lot of goods for sale, but Thompson will try to sell you a bill of goods. He has quite the surprise in store for you!

Sterrett Collins resides in Galesburg and is the interim pastor at the Henry Presbyterian Church. In “Rise Up O’ Men,” he is the handyman, Carl,

and he’s not a bit comfortable in the kitchen with the ladies.

Prairie Arts Council will present ‘Passengers’

Performances begin Nov. 5 PRINCETON — The Prairie Arts Council will present the play “Passengers,” written by Sam Bobrick and directed by Joseph Ennenbach.

Performances begin on Friday, Nov. 5 and end with a matinee on Sunday, Nov. 7. Friday and Saturday performances begin at 7:30 p.m. and the Sunday matinee begins at 2 p.m.

Four veteran actors, Mary Kieffer, Ken Schroeder, Karlyn Swords and Gary Talsky, will bring to life a total of 18 characters in eight short scenes set in a small midwestern bus station. Each scene transitions seamlessly into the next and varies from comedic to poignant.

“Passengers” is presented by arrangement with Concord Theatricals on behalf of Samuel French, Inc. Tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for students.

Regional Transportation Committee will meet Nov. 19

OTTAWA — The Human Services Transportation Plan (HSTP) - Region 3 - (Bureau, DeKalb, Grundy, Kendall, LaSalle, Lee, Ogle and Putnam counties) Transportation Committee will meet 10 a.m. Nov. 19 at Mendota Moose Lodge 714, 211 East 12th St. in Mendota. Individuals with an interest in public transportation are strongly encouraged to attend, especially human service organizations serving individuals who use public transportation.

The Regional Transportation Committee is responsible for the development and implementation of the Human Services Transportation Plan (HSTP). HSTP identifies transportation needs and develops solutions to improve transportation services for the general public. An emphasis is placed on seniors, people with disabilities, individuals with lower incomes and veterans.

The Illinois Department of Transportation has formed an agreement with North Central Illinois Council of Governments (NCICG) for the purposes of preparing, implementing and updating the plan for Region 1 (Boone, Carroll, Jo Daviess, Stephenson and Winnebago counties) and Region 3 (Bureau, DeKalb, Grundy, Kendall, LaSalle, Lee, Ogle and Putnam counties). Evidence in Starved Rock murders can go to crime lab La Salle County judge rules in Chester Weger’s favor in Oct. 26 decision

tcollins@shawmedia.com Some aged evidence from the Starved Rock murders case can go to the crime lab, a LaSalle County judge ruled Oct. 26.

Lawyers for Chester Weger, who was paroled in 2019 after serving six decades for murder, asked to have select pieces of evidence submitted for fresh testing. They later refined the petitions to get nine exhibits submitted for tests not available in 1960, when three women were found bludgeoned to death at Starved Rock State Park.

On Tuesday, LaSalle County Judge Michael C. Jansz gave the OK for eight exhibits to be reexamined. These include cigarette butts, hairs and pieces of string collected at various spots at the crime scene. The one exception was a cluster of three test tubes that were partially labeled, but not enough for Jansz to positively identify the contents.

“We’re very happy with the results, getting eight items tested of the nine requested,” said Celeste Stack, one of Weger’s lawyers. She praised Jansz’s ruling and his “above and beyond” research.

Weger’s reaction was harder to assess. The 82-year-old was present but flanked and largely shielded by six companions who escorted him out and let Stack do the talking. The recently hospitalized Weger used a walker and had an oxygen tube attached to his nose.

There will be a status hearing Nov. 30. Special prosecutor Colleen Griffin said she was unsure whether there would be any post-ruling petitions such as motion asking Jansz to reconsider. That matter, she said, had yet to be discussed.

Stack acknowledged there would be no lab results in hand by the Nov. 30 hearing. She said she would try to expedite the analysis to get results by year’s end.

“It’d be nice to know by Christmas, but that might be wishful thinking,” she said. “But we’re going to try.”

Weger was convicted of murdering Lillian Oetting at Starved Rock State Park. Weger also confessed at that time to killing Oetting’s two companions, but he has since recanted those statements. He has repeatedly challenged his case and, as far back in 2004, asked to have key pieces of evidence subjected to cutting-edge tests. He was not successful.

Until Tuesday, that is.

As for the possibility of tampering, the judge ruled, “These items may have been viewed by many people over the last six decades, but their unique nature makes it unlikely that they

have been substituted, tampered with, replaced or altered in any material respect.”

But Jansz wouldn’t agree to analysis of the test tubes, which Weger’s lawyers said contained scrapings from the fingernails of victim Frances Murphy. That was based on a 1960 report that Jansz dismissed as “speculation.”

Women Inspired Network will host Celebration of Giving at Tonica gala on Nov. 14

Sunday, Nov. 14, will mark the fourth annual Celebration of Giving for the Women Inspired Network.

The Celebration is the annual gala to award grant funding to worthy organizations in Starved Rock Country who empower and enhance the lives of women and children.

The Women Inspired Network is a women’s giving circle established through the Starved Rock Country Community Foundation, serving LaSalle, Bureau and Putnam counties.

Nearly $100,000 has been raised to date; a WIN Scholarship was recently established, and a new website has been created.

This year the number of grant recipients will increase to four, thanks to the generosity of the women in WIN who raised nearly $15,000 for grants as well as additional funds for the Women Inspired Network Endowment to support the organization’s mission in perpetuity and the new WIN Scholarship.

The grant funding presentation will follow with grant checks presented to the 2021 recipients. The evening will conclude by 7 p.m.

She enjoyed traveling and visited numerous countries and also enjoyed reading.

Survivors include sons, David (Sherry) Morris of Granville, Brian Morris of Granville, Mike and Pat Morris of Hennepin, Steve Morris of Granville and Kevin (Richelle) Morris of Michigan; sister-in-law, Barbara Paxson of Hennepin and brother-in-law, Phil (Emily) Morris of Amboy. Also surviving are grandchildren and great-grandchildren and 2 nieces.

O.J. Stoutner of Peru and Jack Cantlin of Earlville were honored Oct. 25 for their decades of service to the Illinois Valley Community College Foundation.

Cantlin joined the foundation in 1992 after being recruited by then-President Ralph Bowermaster and has served 29 years, including 12 as vice president.

Stoutner was recruited to the board in 1999 by Bowermaster and Bill Strong, and has served 22 years, including three as vice president and 13 as president.

Their leadership has helped grow foundation assets to $8.6 million. In the past two years alone, the foundation has provided nearly $950,000 in scholarships and program support.

Stoutner and Cantlin supported capital campaigns for the Community Technology Center and scholarship endowment, and both endowed their own scholarships with wives Susie Stoutner and Kathy Cantlin.

“When I reflect upon Jack and O.J.’s history with our foundation, the words that come to mind are integrity, principle, rectitude, devotion and decency,” said Executive Director of Community Relations and Development Fran Brolley. “Thank you for making our foundation part of your remarkable lives of service.”

The Spirit Award, created in the mid-2000s to honor community members who have made a substantial contribution to the college, has been awarded eight times since 2004. Previous recipients include Brad Schorn, Walter Durley Boyle, Bill Strong, Sen. Gary Dahl, William Taylor, Robert Eschbach, Tom Walsh and Patricia Seibert.

Before presenting the award, IVCC President Jerry Corcoran said, in terms of the foundation’s success, Cantlin and Stoutner are “rock stars.”

Woodland upsets Yorkville Christian; St. Bede tops Putnam Co. Woodland and St. Bede met for championship at 6 p.m. Thursday

bhoxsey@shawmedia.com HENRY – The opening two nights and three matches of the Class 1A Henry-Senachwine Volleyball Regional produced upsets all around, and things didn’t veer off course during Oct. 27 semifinals on John C. Anderson Court.

In the opening semifinal, No. 8-seeded Woodland continued its strong play with a 25-22, 25-19 victory over top-seeded Yorkville Christian.

The Warriors scored the final three points of the back-and-forth opening set and then reeled off the final six points of the second to set up a chance to capture their first postseason title since 2012.

In the night’s second semifinal, No. 10 seed St. Bede topped No. 9 Putnam County, 25-18, 25-14. The Bruins used strong serving runs midway into both sets against the Panthers to advance.

St. Bede, which had dropped a three-setter to Putnam County in Granville just over three weeks ago, will be looking for its first regional title since 2001.

Woodland (21-8) and St. Bede (13-191) met for the championship at 6 p.m.

Thursday.

Yorkville Christian finishes the season 28-6, while Putnam County bows out at 18-17-2.

Sibert led WHS with seven kills and four blocks, and Emma Highland with 12 service points, two aces and four digs. Lexi Struble and Clara Downey recorded five digs each, while Easton and Shae Simmons each passed for three assists.

“This is so exciting,” said Woodland coach Michelle Pitte. “Yorkville Christian is a very good team, but I think my girls came in knowing what we can do, what we are capable of, and they just don’t quit. They showed it tonight.

They are playing with so much confidence right know and are on a heck of a run.

Yorkville Christian was paced by 10 kills and three aces from Saxe, with Mikayla Highland adding four kills and Ava Tickel nine points.

“We are a young team with only one senior in the starting lineup, and we are learning,” said Yorkville Christian coach Bob Coselman. “We’ll take this as a learning experience and come back stronger next year. We just had way too many hitting and serving errors (25), and those are not areas we normally struggle with, but we did tonight.”

being the postseason and having 10 seniors on this team, we wanted this one to keep things going.

“I feel we came out with a ton of energy, and we’ve been playing well as of late, so the confidence has been there too. I also feel like this team is starting to jell and hit its peak ... there is no better time for that than right now.”

The Panthers received five kills each from Maggie Richetta (two aces) and Linzee Fay, while Hatton had four points.

“St. Bede came to play tonight and was able to find open spots tonight, and we struggled to close up those open spots,” said Putnam County coach Amy Bell. “Unfortunately the game of volleyball is about momentum, and they grabbed it early and we just couldn’t seem to wrestle it away from them.

“This has been a great group of seniors, some of them I’ve coached since seventh grade, and they’ve shown great leadership and taught a lot to the younger girls. We have a great bunch of underclassmen that will be back, and they have some really big shoes to fill, because these seniors will truly be missed.”

The combo comes with a choice of dipping sauces; we picked ranch and bang bang sauce, a kind of spicy, elevated ranch.

For entrees, we wanted to try a full spectrum from the menu of salads, flatbreads, sandwiches and burgers, so we opted for a Caprese flatbread, a mushroom and Swiss burger, fiesta steak wrap, and chicken strips with cheese fries.

I was quoted 15 minutes for pickup on the order, and to my pleasant surprise, the kitchen staff was packing my order when I showed up in exactly 15 minutes. I waited a few extra minutes for the flatbread, after both owners told me the first one got a little overdone, and they were remaking it for me, which I thought was excellent service.

The food was steaming hot and fresh when I got home, and the dishes delivered on flavor and price, feeding a whole crowd for $56.

The flatbread was perfectly toasted, covered in melted mozzarella, with pesto, cherry tomatoes and a balsamic glaze. The size is perfect for an appetizer or

The steak wrap, again offered in several flavors, was nicely seasoned and full of grilled steak with veggies served in a spinach tortilla, and accompanied by a side of

seasoned fries.

We opted for mushroom and Swiss for the burger, which was freshly grilled and tasted homemade. The burger was, for me, the perfect size; if you’re looking for a monster burger that’s going to put you in a food coma, this probably isn’t it, but it’s well-executed and worth ordering.

Currently, the food menu is available beginning at 4 p.m., and you can order in the café or bar area for dine-in or carryout.

Prices are reasonable, service is fast and friendly, and the menu is extensive enough to offer something for every taste without being overwhelming in its selections.
