PRINCETON – Jim Dunn is returning to the newspaper where his journalism career began nearly 40 years ago.

Dunn, of Ohio, on Oct. 24 was named editor and general manager of the Putnam County Record, Bureau County Republican and Tonica News. He began work at the Princeton office last week.

He is back at the Jim Dunn newspaper where he launched his career in 1978 as a reporter and photographer.

Dunn would go on to serve as the BCR editor from 1980 to 1990. He has been in various positions with Shaw Media since, most recently as editorial page editor of Sauk Valley Media in Sterling for the past 12 years.

“I’m pleased and honored to take on this leadership role at the Putnam County Record,” Dunn said. “(Publisher) Sam Fisher and (Editor) Terri Simon did wonderful jobs for many years, and I hope to help our staff build upon their work and continue to produce a fine product.”

Dunn will direct the newspaper and digital products of the Putnam County Record, Bureau County Republican, and Tonica News. He also will manage the day-to-day operations at the Princeton office, and will continue to be Sauk Valley Media’s editorial page editor.

He follows Sam Fisher, the Putnam County Record publisher since 1993 who last month was hired as president and chief executive officer of the Illinois Press Association, Illinois Press Foundation and National Newspaper Association.

IVCC fall open house Nov. 15 OGLESBY — Illinois Valley Community College’s fall open house is set for 5:30 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 15.

This event is essential for any students considering attending IVCC. Deans and faculty members from more than 20 majors will lead tours and speak to students and parents about their programs and student support services will discuss the resources available to students including financial aid, scholarships, learning

technologies, disability services and transfer services.

Students experience the blues GRANVILLE — On Wednesday, Oct. 18, Mr. Blue Shoes, also known as Michael Dyson, traveled to Putnam County to enhance the music curriculum through live music.

Mr. Blue Shoes is an interactive and engaging, multi-sensory live music experience that combines blues music, oral history and life lessons, designed to inspire children of all ages about music and learning. The program covers a span of 400 years, music, song, dance and storytelling.

Putnam County primary and elementary students, along with a mixture of junior high and high school students, experienced the sound of blues music and heard the history of where the blues originated. Students were singing, dancing and keeping the beat throughout the assemblies. Many students and staff joined the stage to show off their dance skills in the Wiggle Bounce and Hokey Pokey.

Students even played on Mr. Blue Shoes guitar, with his guidance.

Dunn brings a wealth of newspaper experience to the newspaper.

In the late 1980s, the Bureau County Republican won the Will Loomis Memorial Trophy in the sweepstakes category of the Illinois Press Association newspaper contest for best medium-sized non-daily newspaper.

After serving 10 years as editor at the BCR, he worked for newspapers in Sterling and Mendota. He was the assistant managing editor of the Daily Gazette in Sterling before joining the staff of the Telegraph in Dixon as editor of The Weekender and special sections.

The Telegraph and Daily Gazette joined forces under Shaw Media ownership on Sept. 1, 1995. He has served in many capacities since, including editor of Sauk Valley Sunday and managing editor, before being

named editorial page editor in 2005. Sauk Valley Media has won several awards for editorials and Opinion pages in state newspaper contests.

Jim and his wife, Jamie, a paraprofessional at Princeton High School, have six grown children and three grandchildren.

“As an aside, some of our children’s sporting events took us to R.M. Germano Gymnasium in Granville in the 1990s and 2000s, and we always enjoyed the hospitality of the folks at Putnam County High School,” Dunn said.

He is a 1973 graduate of Ohio High School, and graduated from Illinois College in Jacksonville in 1977 with a bachelor’s degree in English and mathematics and in 1978 attended the Marquette University Graduate School of Journalism in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

Princeton Lions Club held its annual Illinois Valley Toy Run Sunday, Oct. 15, at Soldiers and Sailors Park in Princeton. The toy run consisted of 70 classic cars coming from all over the Illinois Valley. Drivers bring a toy for their entry fee and the Lions Club takes them on a 40-mile cruise touring the countryside as well as Captain Swift’s Covered Bridge and the Red Covered Bridge then through downtown Princeton and back to the park for lunch and a car show.

GRANVILLE — Students at Putnam County Primary School (PCPS) recently helped some of the classrooms of their fellow students recover from Hurricane Harvey.

“On Oct. 5th, we did a civic project with the PreK-2nd grade students.

It was a Hurricane Harvey Walk-a-thon to raise funds for three teachers who lost their school and personal school items in the flooding,” Ronda Cross, PCPS principal, said.

Cross extended her appreciation for all the help PCPS families and students provided in their relief efforts and said the pleasant weather on the day of the walk helped increase the donations.

“We’re very proud to announce that our school raised a total of $2,629.87.

Our initial goal was to fund the needs of one classroom in Texas affected by this hurricane. However, due to the student and com-

munity generosity, we’re happy to say we were able to fund three classrooms with your generous donations,” Cross said.

She added that teachers put thousands of dollars of their own money into their classrooms during their career. These teachers in Texas not only lost their district issued items, but their personal teacher classroom items as well.

Cross said the donations collected will help provide the following items for the three Houston classrooms: phonics book sets, reusable dry erase pockets, flip charts, leveled reading series, chart tablets, letter stamp sets, white sentence strips, word family cards, math instant learning centers, early math learning games, ten-frame magnet boards, math folder games, practice journals, magnetic wands, black and white wipe markers, iPads, a Galaxy tablet, book covers, cases, and more.

“And because of technology ... we’ve already made plans with one classroom to Skype and turn this civic project into even more of a learning opportunity between these classrooms in two different states. Way to go!” Cross said.

Open enrollment a chance for Medicare savings Putnam County Community Center can help residents compare and choose plans

BY DAVE COOK news@putnamcountyrecord.com STANDARD — Anyone who’s had any exposure to Medicare knows how convoluted and confusing it can be to make sense of the various plans and supplemental coverage options.

There is, however, help available which could end up providing you significant savings.

Medicare’s open enrollment period will continue until Dec. 7 and the Putnam County Commu-

nity Center (PCCC) can both enroll new members and provide a review of your current plans to see if there are better options available.

Through the Senior Health Insurance Program (SHIP), Janice Holst, PCCC’s community outreach worker, has received initial training, continuing educational opportunities and the required support to ensure she’s providing the most up-to-date information regarding the health insurance needs of

seniors.

“Last year we counseled 68 people and helped them save a total of $13,229.82 in Medicare costs, so we always recommend to review your plan on a yearly basis,” Holst said.

SHIP was created in 1988 by the Illinois Department of Insurance and the Illinois Department of Aging provides the state’s outreach workers with their training.

SHIP is not affiliated with any insurance company nor do their counselors sell or solicit any type of insurance. Counselors are trained to educate and assist with questions

and comparisons regarding Medicare; Medicare supplements; Medicare Advantage plans; Part D plans; Extra Help for Part D plans; long-term care insurance; and other insurance plans.

Counselors can also assist in filing appeals regarding Medicare claims.

Those new enrollees considering Plans C and F in particular will want to review their options as both will be eliminated in 2020.

“However, this only affects newly eligible beneficiaries. Anyone currently on these plans will

be grandfathered in and will be able to keep their existing coverage,” Holst said.

The PCCC, through its partnership with the Bureau-Putnam Area Rural Transit (BPART), can also assist with providing PC residents with transportation to the center. Holst also said she can schedule to visit PC residents in their homes.

Although the transportation options are only available to PC residents, anyone is free to schedule an appointment for the enrollment process or a coverage review at the PCCC.

“Many people will visit us for information and enroll for their plans later at home, but we can also do that here. One of the benefits of enrolling here is that we also comparison shop so they get the best options available,” Holst said.

How to properly dispose of your expired medications

BY DAVE COOK AND GOLDIE RAPP news@tonicanews.com PERU — If you have any unwanted, unused or expired prescription drugs laying around in the medicine cabinets, there are a variety of opportunities to dispose of them safely.

While National Take Back Day was officially held on Oct. 28, several Illinois Valley police departments including ones

in Putnam and LaSalle counties, as well as the Community Partners Against Substance Abuse (CPASA) and the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), will accept medications for disposal at any time.

The service is free and anonymous, with no questions asked. Peru Police Chief Doug Bernabei said his department has offered this service for years and added that it’s only become more

popular over time.

“A lot of people don’t know what to do with their old medications, so this is an important service for the community. It helps ensure the medications are disposed of properly rather than simply throwing them away or flushing them. It keeps them from getting into our environment or endangering an innocent person,” Bernabei said.

Conerton stressed this is the safest way to get rid of prescription drugs, and CPASA representatives will take anything and not ask questions. Since 2010, CPASA has collected over 10,955 pounds of drugs locally.

According to a press release CPASA released, it’s advised that disposing of unused medicines by flushing them down the toilet or throwing them in the trash poses a potential safety and health hazard.

Five arrested following narcotics investigations

LASALLE — Betty (Bildhauer) Lindner, 97, of LaSalle passed away peacefully on Thursday, Oct. 26, 2017, in Heritage Healthcare in Peru.

She was born Dec. 14, 1919, in LaSalle to Mathias and Mary (Koplenik) Bildhauer. She married George “Gig” Lindner on Nov. 18, 1939, in St. Roch’s Church in LaSalle.

Betty attended LaSalle-Peru High School. Betty worked at Westclox, L-P cafeteria, Walgreens and Blakeley’s Department Store until it closed.

Betty was a member of St. Patrick’s Church, where she had been active in St. Ann’s Sodality and Ladies of Charity. She was also a member for more than 50 years of the Catholic Daughters of the Americas. She was also a member of LP Elkettes and American Legion Auxiliary.

She had been a former Girl Scout leader and volunteered at the Illinois Veterans Home in LaSalle for many years. She enjoyed playing cards, bus trips to the gambling boat and watching the Cubs.

She is survived by her daughter, Nancy (Chuck) Loebach of Granville; two granddaughters, Heidi and Becky Loebach; her twin sister, Dorothy Kolanowski; many nieces and nephews; and a son.

She was preceded in death by her husband, George, on March 15, 1990; a daughter, Mary Beth, in infancy; one brother, Mathias Bildhauer; and four sisters, Mary “Mitz” Piletic, Agnes Harth, Josephine Brongel and Jane McConnell.

A Mass of Christian burial was held Monday, Oct. 30, in St. Patrick’s Church in LaSalle with the Rev. John Harth, her godson, officiating. Burial was in St. Vincent’s Cemetery in LaSalle. Visitation was held prior to the services in the church.

Pallbearers were Bill Rogowski, Jim Dellinger, Mel and Phil Harth, Larry Loebach, Dave Weiden and Christopher Stillson.

Memorials may be directed to the donor’s choice.

LOSTANT — Edward J. Schorn, 78 of (Mt. Palatine) rural Lostant passed away Thursday, Oct. 26, 2017, at his residence.

He was born Dec. 6, 1938, at home in rural Lostant to Joseph and Emma (Dose) Schorn.

He married Suzann Chamberlin on Nov. 12, 1960, at St. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Leonore.

He attended Lostant Schools and was a member of Immaculate Conception Church in Mt. Palatine until it closed and then became a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Granville.

He farmed his entire life until he retired in 2003. He was a Magnolia Township trustee for many years. He was also a trustee for St. Mary’s Cemetery in rural Lostant.

He was a Putnam County Panthers sports fan and loved his St. Louis Cardinals.

He is survived by his wife, Suzann Schorn; his children, Brenda Wulzen of rural Lostant, Cathy (Mike) Moriarty of Granville, Christy (Jim) Galetti of Standard, Mike (Aida) Schorn of Millstadt and Dale (Carey) Schorn of rural Granville. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Brad (Andrea) Moriarty, Dan (Katie) Moriarty, Nick Moriarty, Dylan Wulzen, Tim, Justin and Matthew Galetti, Kyle Sellett, Trey, Jace and Brea Schorn, and Eddie Schorn; and six great-grandchildren, Manuela, Tobias, Andres, Antonia Botero-Moriarty, Camden and Caleb Moriarty.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his twin brother, Elmer; and two brothers, Donald and Robert (died at birth).

A memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m.

Wednesday, Nov. 1, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Granville with Father Patrick DeMeulemeester officiating. Cremation rites have been accorded. Burial will be at St. Peter and Paul Cemetery in Leonore.

Visitation was held from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 31, at the Dysart-Cofoid Funeral Chapel in Granville, will a rosary recited at 7 p.m.

• Jeffrey A. Phillips, 47, of Mendota was charged with unlawful delivery of a lookalike substance, a Class 3 felony. Bond was set at $40,000.

• Larry I. Jones, 50, of Peru was charged with unlawful delivery of a controlled substance, crack cocaine, a Class 2 felony. Bond was set at $500,000.

On Monday, Oct. 23, Mendota Police also arrested another individual on an arrest warrant that was involved in the Tri-DENT investigation: • Aaron F. Hamrick, 38, of Mendota was charged with three counts of unlawful delivery of a controlled substance, heroin, a Class 2 felony.

Bond was set at $1 million.

All bonds are 10 percent to apply. Tri-DENT’s investigation into illegal narcotic sales and distribution in the Illinois Valley area will continue and more arrests are expected in the coming months.

Over the last several months, the Tri-DENT Drug Task Force has been conducting narcotic investigations throughout the Illinois Valley. During this time, Tri-DENT has conducted multiple controlled purchases of heroin, crack cocaine and LSD. Arrest warrants were obtained with the assistance of LaSalle County State’s Attorney’s Office and on Friday, Oct. 20, Tri-DENT, along with law enforcement partners including LaSalle County Sheriff’s Office, Mendota Police, LaSalle Police and Peru Police, conducted warrant arrests of multiple individuals involved in Tri-DENT’s investigations.

Ottawa man charged with selling LSD OTTAWA — Following an investigation into narcotic sales in the Ottawa area by the Tri-DENT drug task force, an Ottawa man was arrested Wednesday, Oct. 25, for allegedly delivering LSD to undercover officers.

Cordell M. James, 19, was taken into custody in Marseilles by deputies from the LaSalle County Sheriff’s Office after an arrest warrant was obtained from the LaSalle County State’s Attorney’s Office. He was

charged with unlawful delivery of a controlled substance, LSD, which is a Class 1 felony.

James is being held at the LaSalle County Jail on a $1 million bond, 10 percent to apply.

Observations from the Field of Dreams M

att Hostetter, our local Country Financial Representative, had called me and said he had a great story for me. His administrative assistant, Darlene Coleman, and her husband, Sean Coleman, were actually the ones COMMENTARY who had this story. I went and interviewed them.

Darrell Darlene told me that Sean had found a high school ring by a pond Alleman in Sheffield back in 1966. She said their daughter, decades later, had come home from school with a brochure for high school rings. That evening, they were looking over the brochure to order her class ring. This had reminded Sean of the ring he had found so many years ago. Sean’s wife asked if he still had the ring. To her surprise after more than 40 years, he still had the ring, tucked away in his jewelry box.

The high school ring had the initials of M.C. and the class year of 1966. The ring belonged to someone from Kewanee High School. The Coleman family began to research on the Internet in order to locate the owner of the ring. After hours of researching and coming up blank, they decided to take a picture of the ring and share it on Facebook with a description of the ring.

They asked people on Facebook to share the post and get the message out in hopes of locating the owner.

People soon began to share their post and people began asking more questions about the ring. Soon the information reached the Kewanee area. Darlene received many messages from people in Kewanee offering their help in finding the person.

Of all the message received, one stood out of all of them sounding very hopeful. Someone had located a junior from Kewanee High School with the initials M.C. It was a woman from Kewanee by the name of Mary Clark.

Darlene received this message and began her Google search to locate this person’s phone number. When she found a number, she attempted to contact her a couple times. No one picked up the call and no answering machine was set up to take a message.

It was about a half an hour later that Darlene received a phone call from the number she had attempted to call. When she answered, the woman on the other end thought she was returning a call to a family member.

“I remember asking this individual if she was Mary Clark. When she answered yes, I was so excited to think I might just have found the owner of the ring,” Darlene said.

Darlene introduced herself on the phone and said to Clark, “You don’t know me, but I have a question for you. Did you at any time ever lose a ring?”

“I just remember the excitement in Mary’s voice when she responded to me and said she had lost her high school ring ‘forever’ ago,” Darlene said. “She recalled the time she lost it and described the pond in which she had looked and looked for it with the help from her sister and friends she was with that day. She thought she would never find it again.”

After only one weekend and the dedication of the Coleman family, the high school ring that had been kept safe for so many years found its way back to its rightful owner. Sean and Darlene drove to Kewanee the following weekend and presented the ring to Clark.

“It was a wonderful moment for all of us. Sean and I were so happy to have found Mary. She shared her story of her search with us that day. It was a feel-good day for the both of us. We could not have found her without the help of those individuals on Facebook. A big thank you to those who shared our post and helped in locating Mary Clark,” Darlene said. “It is nice to be able to share something positive in a not-so-positive world today. When used properly, social media can be one of the most powerful tools we have. It can bring a community together and make good things happen.

“Who knows? Other people may have someone else’s treasures tucked away that they found years ago. Today with the tools and means to be able to aid in the search of locating people, more people might start doing the same as we did. As for our family, this is a memory we will treasure forever.”

Windmills spin, and life goes on

A

s I crested the hill on the Kentville today, heading to work, I saw them. Giant silver windmills, churning up the air. Now these are not the windmills of our Netherland ancestors.

Don Quixote didn’t saddle up and fight these, but they were the subject of a huge debate and countless opinions. Modernists might refer to them as “wind turbines.”

Those who opposed them declared them hideous. “They will ruin the natural beauty of our skyline,” they said. Some came up with seemingly ridiculous reasons not to erect them.

My father owned a duck club at the time, and our membership was approached and asked to sign a petition stating that the windmills would alter the migrational pattern of the geese and ducks and throw them off course as they flew to and from their nesting sights. We also were told that the ducks would get sucked into their swirling vortex and be killed, reducing the population significantly. Um, trees grow high and no one ever accused God of throwing off migration, and if you are a Darwinist, then you would be inclined to believe that waterfowl stupid enough to fly into a huge silver feather shredder probably shouldn’t have been in the breeding pool anyway.

My favorite reason was that they created some sort of weird electric current that coursed through the ground (based on the fact that they are designed to create electricity) and that entire herds of cattle who had been grazing at their bases had been electrocuted and killed.

The people that supported them declared that they were environmentally friendly and helped create energy from God given sources, such as the wind. Those fortunate enough to own property on which they would be placed

COMMENTARY Lori Boekeloo were promised to be financially compensated for this mar on their land. It makes ‘ugly’ seem more tolerable when you have a roll of bills in your pocket. Just ask any old 20-something model married to a geriatric millionaire. This new industry also promised an increase in jobs in our area in order to erect them and maintain them.

Personally, I enjoy them. I mostly enjoyed the look on the faces of children I’d take out there to see them, explaining that they were alien ships, and when the red lights were on, it meant they were teletransporting children to the mother planet.

All kidding aside, I work outside sometimes on a farm near them, and when all is quiet, you can hear the gentle whooshing of the blades as they cut through the air. I find it soothing. I also think they are oddly beautiful and have captured pictures of them on the horizon during sunset and the image is pleasing to my eye. I appreciate the fact that they are a renewable resource and will help energize our planet until the real aliens do arrive.

This all made me think of my first Sunday at Willow Springs Mennonite Church. I was new to something so conservative.

Mennonites have the reputation of being quiet and subtle and grossly understated. Not one of those words has ever been used to describe me and my personality (except maybe the gross part).

I never thought I’d fit in. I was so different with my tattoos and trucker mouth and sordid past. I was a single mother in a church

full of families. My life was lived out loud, for all the world to see. I tease them all still today that when we think of the body of Christ, and what part we play, I am the mouth.

When something needed to be said, I said it. When questions needed to be asked, I asked them.

Something weird happened that day. I found a new family and they grew to love me, despite myself. I’m sure some of the older congregants rolled their eyes at my outgoing personality, but they loved me anyway. I’m sure some of the parents wondered what sort of influence I would be on their children, and yet they have allowed me to minister to the youth every Sunday for over a decade now. I’m sure there are some who are still suspicious of me and would accuse me of being too bold. Generally, I am appreciated for my differences and accepted without too much judgement.

They, on the other hand have helped me to be more quiet (okay, not much quieter, but noticeably so in comparison to my youth).

They have taught me the art of subtlety. They have slowed me down and helped me enjoy a more relaxed pace of life. They have guided me on a path of God’s choosing, not my own. They have helped me become a better person and supported me in my frantic and enthusiastic endeavors.

So, almost 19 years after this giant, noisy ‘windmill’ walked onto the property of a quiet Mennonite church, we have all learned to live in harmony and appreciate the beauty of the transformed horizon.

The middle must be heard

I

worry a great deal about the polarization of what’s left of our two major parties. The Democrats are in thrall to African-American leadership plus party identity culture wars; all they seem to want from government is more.

Within the GOP, a battle for dominance is underway among Establishment conservatives, the Tea Party, and the Trump program, spelled out to us in 144 characters every morning.

Nobody speaks for me anymore.

I think most Americans are somewhere in the middle, between the 30-yard lines of the field. We are not necessarily centrists, yet pragmatists who want to see big problems solved and provide order, harmony and prosperity.

I don’t know what a person in the middle thinks; I can only speak for myself. Yet here are a few positions of mine that seem not to be well represented today. Apologies for the brevity imposed by the tyranny of a column with a 700-word max.

Guns: I’m in support of the 2nd Amendment but oppose assault weapons, which used to be banned.

I am certainly not for letting lawless teen children in Chicago have access to guns, which are fenced to them from out of state.

Abortion: I am opposed to abortion, as are most people, yet I am reluctantly pro-choice, as I think

UNDERSTANDING ILLINOIS Jim Nowlan letting Big Brother invade a woman’s body is egregious in a supposedly free society.

My friend, Perry Klopfenstein of Gridley, is staunchly pro-life. He proposes a pro-reduction program in which both sides would, ideally, work together to reduce the incidence of abortions, which are going to occur regardless of any law.

International politics: I believe the U.S. must continue to play its role as the world leader, but that Congress should require the President to submit plans to lawmakers, in secret if necessary, for ending our involvement in each conflict.

There are no plans or clear goals I know of for exiting Afghanistan and the Middle East.

Immigration: We should let “Dreamers” stay. We should reduce illegal entry to the US, but a wall is not needed to do so.

Illinois state pensions: We must reduce the burden of these pensions, which are too rich. (Disclosure: I receive $29,000 a year from the state university retirement system.)

Illinois lawmakers must pass yet another major pension reform bill,

for example, to eliminate the very costly annual 3 percent compounded increase in retirement pensions.

Municipal pensions: Many municipal police and fire pension systems are much worse off than those of the state. We should pass a law to allow perilously burdened cities to declare bankruptcy, so they can rewrite their pension plans, reduce benefits, and thus make future benefits sustainable.

Finally, I propose that we create a new The Middle Rising Party (or better name) in Illinois. We would need to file a slate of statewide candidates, from governor on down. At 76, I am too old to take a top slot on this slate but would be willing to put my name forward, if needed, for a lesser state office.

We wouldn’t win, not with hundreds of millions of dollars from billionaires sloshing around in Illinois politics. Yet we could generate enough attention that voters would know there is another option out there.

This effort, in which I would put my shoulder to the wheel, would keep me out of saloons for the coming year. But I am serious. What do you think? Is this idea a hit or a miss, and why?

Lady Panthers’ season ends PERU — The Putnam County Lady Panthers saw their season come to a close on Oct. 23 when they lost to Peoria Christian in the St. Bede Class 1A Regional, 16-25 and 16-25. The team’s final season mark is 13-18-3.

Hunters can use crossbows during archery season SPRINGFIELD – Hunters in Illinois may use crossbows during archery hunting seasons, including the Illinois archery deer season and the Illinois fall turkey archery season.

Gov. Bruce Rauner signed into law House Bill 2893, which amended the

Illinois Wildlife Code to repeal restrictions on the use of crossbows during archery hunting seasons in Illinois.

Illinois law previously allowed the use of crossbows for archery hunting by persons age 62 or older, and those persons with disabilities who qualified for

a crossbow permit issued by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR). In addition, the previous law allowed certain youth hunters to use crossbows, and allowed all archery hunters to use crossbows beginning the Monday after the second firearm deer season.

The 2017-18 season dates for archery deer and fall turkey archery hunting in Illinois are Oct. 1, through Jan. 14, 2018. Archery seasons will be closed Nov. 17-19 and Nov. 30-Dec. 3 during the firearm deer season in those counties open to firearm deer hunting.

New DAR chapter forming

HENRY — An organizational meeting will be held at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 12, at the First Presbyterian Church in Henry to begin the process of founding a new DAR chapter. The church is located at 511 Wirt St. Any new prospective members, any transfer members or women wanting to learn about the Daughters of the American Revolution are welcome.

State leaders will attend, including Gloria Flathom, Illinois state regent; Donna Benshoof, state organizing secretary; Joy Upton, chapter development and revitalization committee; and Patricia Holcomb, District II director.

Founding a new chapter is a special event and very exciting for the Illinois Organization and the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution.

When a new chapter is formed, women want to be part of the organizing and later the charter list of members.

The new chapter will join the current 104 chapters in the Illinois state organization and promote patriotism, preserve American history and support education.

Members are descended from the patriots who won American independence during the Revolutionary War. DAR is one of the world’s largest and most active service organizations.

Annual Food for Fines amnesty benefits area food pantries HENNEPIN — Again, this year, area libraries are working to benefit local food pantries while forgiving fines.

Seven area libraries — LaSalle, Peru, Richard A. Mautino, Putnam County, Graves-Hume, Princeton and Oglesby — are sponsoring their annual “Food for Fines” amnesty program benefiting area food pantries. From Monday, Nov. 6, through Saturday, Nov. 18, these libraries will accept canned or boxed non-perishable food donations for payment of overdue fines. The collected donations will be given to area food pantries, help restock shelves in November and December. This is the eighth year area libraries have cooperated to benefit of area food pantries.

Each donated food item pays $1 in library overdue fines up to a maximum of 25 items to pay $25 per overdue library/patron card. Food items must be presented at the circulation desks, with all donated food given to area food pantries.

Donated food is not accepted for lost or damaged books, replacement of cards or interlibrary loan fees.

Because of food safety concerns, the pantries request items be in their original packaging; damaged packages, outdated food or glass containers are not acceptable. Suggested food items include canned fruits and vegetables, soups, cereals, pasta mixes and canned meats. For more information, call a sponsoring library.

Bradford Beta Sigma Phi to host Family Feud Fun Nite Nov. 11 BRADFORD — The Bradford chapter of Beta Sigma Phi will host a Family Feud Fun Nite on Saturday, Nov. 11, at Shallowbrook Farm.

Doors will open at 5 p.m. with the competition beginning at 6 p.m.

This event replaces their annual fall bazaar as one of our two main fundraising events of the year.

The group is looking for teams of five to eight people, ages 15 and up, to participate in an evening of questions and answers, basket raffles, 50/50 raffle, silent auction, prizes and fun.

In the spirit of the season, Betas will be accepting canned and non-perishable items which will be donated to the local food pantry.

The Betas will be serving barbecues, pasta salad, chips and dessert.

Items may be purchased throughout the evening as a meal or individually.

Carry-outs will be available. Beverages will also be available for purchase.

Bradford Betas is a non-profit organization that exists to serve the community.

Some services that they provide include: providing school supplies, the Little Miss Bradford Pageant, Labor Day tractor

pull, the senior citizen Christmas dinner, Christmas tree tags, visit with Santa, breakfast with the

OGLESBY — The Illinois Valley Symphony Orchestra will celebrate a tribute to “Women in Music” at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 3, at the Dr. Mary Weeg Auditorium at IVCC. Kate Tombaugh, mezzo soprano, will return to the area as soloist with the orchestra, directed by Lucia Matos, conductor and general manager. This concert is being dedicated to the 150th anniversary of the birth of Maud Powell.

Prior to the performance, from 6 to 7 p.m., a documentary film by Paul D. Butler will be shown in Room CTC125, next to the auditorium. The film is titled America’s First Great Violinist, “Our Maud Powell.”

There is limited seating.

Tombaugh was born and raised in Streator and has been praised as “utterly convincing dramatically and musically superlative.” Some of her musical highlights include twice placing third in the Chicago Regional MONC Auditions, hosted by NYC’s Metropolitan Opera, and per-

forming her Carnegie Hall Debut upon winning the Barry Alexander International Vocal Competition.

She is the founder and executive director of the new area arts organization, Poco a Poco, which hosts a week-long summer training program for highschool-age vocalists every June and offers various concerts open and free to the public throughout the week.

Tombaugh holds a master’s degree in voice from the University of Cincinnati’s College Conservatory of Music (CCM). She is currently based in Murray, Ky., where her husband, Steven Warner, is on the faculty at Murray State University, They have a 1-year-old daughter.

Other music featured will include Sinfonia in C Major (Overture) by Marianne Martinas, and also ”Annie Laurie” by Lady John Scott.

LACON

M-P Master Gardeners clean up Marshall County Courthouse LACON — The Marshall County Courthouse hosta bed took on a fresh look, as the Marshall-Putnam Master Gardeners, along with Marshall County Board Chairman Gary Kroeschen, began fall cleaning of the hosta flower garden. Along with removing weeds, an evaluation was conducted to regain the beauty of the garden.

This garden reflects the beauty of Marshall County and needs to be maintained to enhance the courthouse grounds.

Major work will need to occur in the spring to enhance this garden space. The master gardeners, along with the Marshall County Board, are seeking any community volunteers to work to restore these beds. Hostas need to be split, the garden worked up, weeds removed and mulch refreshed. Anyone who would like to help is welcome and can contact the University of Illinois Extension Office in Henry to help with the courthouse garden

restoration.

The University of Illinois Extension Marshall-Putnam Master Gardeners are a small group trained to answer garden problems in Marshall and Putnam counties. They also conduct educational sessions throughout the counties they service. Gardening is the hobby of these dedicated volunteers.

The master gardeners would like to thank Marshall County Board Chairman Gary Kroeschen and Dennis Dahlbach of Toluca for their help on this project.

Both men worked alongside of the master gardeners to clean and load the brush accumulated in the neglected garden.

Annual scholarship program announced HENNEPIN — North Central Bank and the CBAI Foundation for Community Banking announces its annual scholarship program which enables Illinois high-school seniors to enter a statewide essay-writing contest. The goal of the program, sponsored by CBAI member banks and thrifts, is to increase public awareness of community banks and their contributions.

North Central Bank is a member of the Community Bankers Association of Illinois (CBAI), which formed the foundation in 1996. A monetary award in the amount of $1,000 a year for up to four years of higher education will be given to the author of the best entry submitted to the CBAI Foundation by a participating Illinois high-school senior. Up to 11 additional first-place $1,000 awards and 12 second-place $500 awards are available throughout the state. An additional $500 will be awarded to the high school of the overall winner. All high

school seniors, regardless of their financial need or plans for higher education, may participate. North Central Bank in Ladd and Hennepin are participating locations.

North Central Bank will also be offering up to $500 as a local award. The same entries sent to the state competition will be judged locally.

Information on the contest is available at North Central Bank (Hennepin and Ladd) and the local high schools.

HENRY — The Marshall-Putnam Quilter’s Guild will meet at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 8, at the Henry Presbyterian Church on Wirt Street in Henry. After the business meeting, the program will be given by Judy Murphy.
