Golf ball drop planned for Nov. 1

There will also be a silent auction at this time. At 1 p.m. the golf ball drop will take place. Numbered golf balls are available for $10. The golf balls will be dropped by a helicopter above hole #6, up to 500 balls will be sold. Payout will be 50% of the golf ball sales with a guaranteed payout of at least $500. HENRY — The Marshall-Putnam Fair Association is preparing for their 100th anniversary this summer. They will be hosting their first fundraiser on Sunday, Nov. 1, with the Marshall-Putnam Fair “TAKEOFF” for the 100th fair. The fundraiser will be held at Timber Ridge Golf Club in Lacon beginning at 11 a.m. with a pulled pork lunch served from 11 am. to 1 p.m.

The chug & run will consist of a relay around the perimeter of the golf course. Each team member will

chug a carbonated beverage and run up to a quarter of a mile to the next team member. The last team member will run to the start of the race, grab a golf cart and pick up their remaining team members. The first team to the club house wins. In the event of a tie, there will be a chug off at the club house. Teams may sign up for this event at Timber Ridge or by calling the fair office. You can also sign up the day of the event. The 100th celebration of the Marshall-Putnam Fair Association will be held July 14-19, 2021.

MCNABB — Larry Ringenberg landed his first job on a golf course when the late Carl Gustafson hired him as a high school freshman in 1967. His dad, Dick, and Carl bowled together, and Gustafson asked if Larry would be interested in helping clean up the golf course in the spring. “Kind of liked it and got to drive a golf cart, and you know, had a good time doing it,” Ringenberg said. Fellow Wyaton Hills co-worker Kenny Pihl convinced Gustafson to bring Ringenberg back the next year and he’s never left the golf course since. That experience launched a long and successful year as golf course superintendent for nearly years, the past 19 at Edgewood Park Golf Club in McNabb. Ringenberg, who has been at Edgewood since January 2002, will be retiring Nov. 25. He said it’s been a rewarding career. “There’s nothing better than being out here bright and early in the morning, no one else around besides you and Mother Nature,” he said. “It’s been nice to work for the people I’ve worked for. I’ve had

a good time. And I still like doing it, it’s just time.” Along the way, Ringenberg has worked at six golf courses, spending 10 years at Wyaton Hills, a year at Twin Orchard Country Club in Long Grove, six and a half years at Baker Park in Kewanee, 14 years at Bureau Valley Country Club, four years at Lacon Country Club and the past 19 at Edgewood.

Keeping up with Mother Nature The biggest challenge of the job is dealing with whatever Mother Nature may bring. “Mother Nature kind of rules the roost as far as what’s going to happen. You go from too wet to too dry to too hot. Storm damages, flooding,” Ringenberg said. “And the diseases you get on the greens can be a challenge to try to keep ahead of them. Knowing when to apply the fungicides and the insecticides at the right time to keep it under control.” While there are certain things that have to get done every day, there are other days other challenges arise. “There’s days you come in at 6 o’clock in the morning and, ‘Well, I guess I’m not going to do that today,’ because this issue is screaming louder than that one is,” he said.

“My guys are real good at finding water leaks for me (laughing). What are you going to do today? Nothing but dig holes. “My workers do 90% of the mowing. My job is to put the fires out that they can’t do. … I do the spraying, mechanical work, irrigation work. And whatever else comes up. There’s always something to do.” Ringenberg has the kind of job that people will know if he’s done a good job or not. “There’s some people that think it is should be Medinah Country Club that don’t want to pay for Medinah Country Club. All in all, I’ve never had too many people really gotten irate over anything,” he said. He said some late afternoon golfers may give him hard time about the greens. “‘Ah, Larry, you know the greens were a little slow last night.’ ‘Well, yeah. They would be.’ They’ve grown for a day,’” he said. “You mow them at 6 o’clock in the morning and by 5 o’clock in the afternoon, they’ve grown for 12 hours. Conditions change even over the course of the day.”

Time to travel Ringenberg and his wife, Ellen, who will be retiring after 24 years from Princeton Elementary Schools

on Dec. 31, are making plans to travel and spend more time in their camper at Condits Ranch. “We’ve never really been able to travel other than at Christmas time with both our schedules being so far off, me off in the wintertime and her off in the summertime. It was a little tough for me to take a little summer vacation,” Ringenberg said. He will keep busy and doesn’t plan on sitting around. “There’s going to be something to do. I’m not going to just go home and sit. She probably won’t let me. And I’m firm believer you’ve got to keep doing something,” he said. “All the help I have here are all retirees. Mainly to get free golf, get paid a little bit. They’re not out here to make a living just to find something to do for awhile.” He will likely hang out a bit at Edgewood helping new superintendent Darren Weasel with some mechanical work and occasional mowing. He hopes he’s able to play more golf, something he never had much time to do even if he spent all day on the golf course. And he won’t say anything about the condition of the greens or anything, because he knows all about what took it to be ready to play.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR To the Editor, I would like to respond to Leo McCauley’s editorial about President Trump. Let’s start with the picture of the president alone on a balcony of his home taking off a mask. Oh my god, how horrible. Does Mr. McCauley wear a mask in his home? Mr. Trump was the first leader to suspend travel to and from China and was called a racist. He saved thousands of lives doing that while Governor Cuomo of New York caused the deaths of thousands by forcing nursing homes to take virus infected patients into their facilities. The President had a hospital ship anchor off New York which was never used. He gave Cuomo and Newsome everything they asked for and was praised by them. So don’t tell me he caused thousands of deaths when in fact he saved lives. I suppose you blame him for the deaths around the world too. As for lies, it is the left who lie about President Trump. Russian conspiracy hoax, a lie. Proved by the Russian investigation. The president backs terrorist groups. Lie. He has denounced these groups over 17 times. Ukranian quid pro quo hoax. Made up by an anonymous person. Lie. Called fallen soldiers losers and suckers. Another lie by an anonymous source who waited 18 months to bring this out. Why? Over 210,000 killed by COVID mostly due to Mr. Trump, another untruth. The majority of deaths have been elderly people with underlying medical problems. The medical problem plus virus

caused most of deaths not the virus by itself. President Trump did everything possible to save lives. Wearing a mask keeps from getting the virus, untrue. In July, 70% of people catching the virus wore a mask constantly and another 14% wore a mask most often. CDC figures. President Trump is working hard to unite the country. Hispanic and black communities are waking up to the truth that the president has their best interests in his heart. He calls for school choice and endorses charter schools. Parents are lining up to get their children into these schools. Most of the hatred in America stems from the left and the media. They say America is a systemic racist country which could not be further from the truth. They divide the country with this lie. They are telling America that if you are black it is unsafe to leave your home because of racist police which is nonsense. So Mr. McCauley, stop blaming President Trump for everything and get your facts straight. The greatest economy ever (until the shutdown but coming back), millions of jobs created, worker’s salary increases (over $5,000 in three years), historic peace agreement in the middle east, safe borders, revamped the veterans administration, prison reform, foreign companies building plants in America, lower taxes and on and on with great programs. All these successes attained despite the vicious attacks by the media, big tech and Hollywood elite. President Trump truly cares about America.

Local farmers assist family in need at harvest

GRANVILLE — Roy Waldschmidt, a longtime resident of Granville, passed away on Sept.14, and left his family with the decision of who would harvest his corn crop in the field that he planted this past spring. On Oct. 21, a group of area farmers pulled out of their own fields, worked together to combine Waldschmidt’s corn and hauled it to the elevator. It was a community effort that involved Bart Whitney, Doug and Bill Henkel, Shannon Fay, Jim Johnson, Bob and Tom Bruch, Ben Day Sr. and Cole Duffin.

DAR chapter recognizes National Family Literacy Day

HENRY — The Chief Senachwine Chapter NSDAR is announcing its recognition of National Family Literacy Day on Nov. 1. Established by the 103rd Congress in 1994, National Family Literacy Day emphasizes the importance of reading and learning for the entire family and highlights the impact that parents have on their child’s learning. National Family Literacy Day usually focuses on special activities to showcase the importance of family reading to help build a nation of readers. For example, in November 2019, the Chief Senachwine Chapter co-hosted with the Henry Library a Family Reading Night at the library. Several veterans selected their favorite children’s books to read to the children and their families that gathered at the library. Unfortunately, despite plans to host the event again, the Family Reading Night at the library cannot be repeated this year due to COVID. Nevertheless, families can underscore the importance of reading by and to their children to assist in reading and literacy. Some suggestions are to have reading night(s)

with the family, collect and donate books, check into read-a-thons and participate in reading-challenge programs sponsored by schools and libraries. Noticeable is the alarming fact that as many as one in six adults struggle with reading and writing. A reading/writing adult gains self-respect and confidence. That person can strive toward goals that otherwise would not be achievable. Fostering child reading is essential to the development of an adult reader/ writer. With education as one of the cornerstones of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution, the Chief Senachwine Chapter NSDAR is committed to increasing literacy by promoting and supporting literacy programs. The proclamation signed by Mayor John Wabel, Lacon, underscores the importance of literacy, celebrates the joy of reading, encourages area residents to promote literacy by reading together as a family, and extends deep appreciation to those who strengthen the literacy of our children and the local community.

COUNTRY Financial representative Matt Hostetter is pleased to announce the Putnam County Emergency Management Agency as a 2020 recipient of a COUNTRY Financial Operation Helping Heroes donation. Hostetter presented the donation for $1,500 to agency coordinator Chauntelle Biagi-Bruer to assist with the purchase of a new ID card and credentialing system. The credentialing system has an app that most phones can download and the phone then becomes the scanning device. Managining Diabetes in a Modern World education series is ongoing University of Illinois Extension Educator Susan Glassman presented “Choose It, Count It, Eat It!” as part of the Managing Diabetes in a Modern World education series. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention National Diabetes Statistics Report, 2020 indicated that 10.5% of adults manage a diagnosis of diabetes. Of those diagnosed, 89% struggle with overweight and obesity and 38% are unable to meet recommended physical activity guidelines. The “Choose It, Count It, Eat It”

free presentation is available to all in a virtual class recording at go.illinois.edu\nutritionwell. Glassmann presented researchbased information and resources to help persons with diabetes enjoy eating, be nourished and stay on track. During “Choose It, Count It, Eat It,” she explained healthy meal plan options including the Mediterranean and DASH Diets. Glassman highlighted meal planning using the plate method and discussed carbohydrate counting and dining out.

The session offered how to make food choices based on sound scientific information. She emphasized balance and the importance of making small changes, setting goals and continuing to add healthier options or limiting less healthy options as you go along. “Healthy eating and meal planning will look different to everyone because it reflects personal preferences, values, traditions, cultures and food budgets,” Glassmann said. Managing Diabetes in a Modern World webinar series is offered on

The 318 packs flavor and history into its menu If you want to feed both your stomach and brain, consider ordering a meal from The 318 Restaurant with a side of “Biography in Black” from the library. The 318 is a relatively new addition to Streator’s downtown. It opened at 318 E. Main St. earlier this year and serves up burgers, sandwiches, wraps, hot dogs and appetizers with names that pay homage to Streator history. Locals will recognize the significance of many meal monikers, such as “The Brick” burger, which alludes to the city’s former brick-making industry, the “Pluto” burger in honor of Streator son and Pluto discoverer Clyde Tombaugh or the “Plumb” burger, named for Col. Ralph Plumb, a 19th century mayor who oversaw some of the community’s mining operations. If any of The 318’s many other historical references are a mystery to diners, answers can be found in the Streator history text “Biography in Black” by Paula Angle. My colleague and I placed a weekday carryout order during our lunch break. This was the first time either of us were sampling The 318, so when I picked up the meals, I took it as a good sign that every table both indoors and on the sidewalk was occupied. A busy lunch location often indicates a good one. I’m easily reeled in by a good name, so I naturally gravitated toward the “Hardscrabble,” a two-patty hamburger with pepper jack cheese, loaded with slices of jalapeño ($10.89). The title is a nod to Streator’s original name of Hardscrabble. Jalapeño is one of my favorite flavors, and the “Hardscrabble” delivered spice on every bite. I could have made the burger even spicier with The 318’s “homemade VERY HOT hot sauce,” but decided to save that for another order. Another of my favorites is deep-fried sweet corn nuggets,

But The 318 includes them on its list of appetizers ($6), and they’re a mix of crunchy, sweet and savory perfection. My colleague also ordered an appetizer of cheese curds ($6), and since we were paying on one ticket, we were offered The 318’s appetizer deal of three for $15. We decided to

stick with only two appetizers, but the option would be ideal for a larger group. As his main course, my colleague chose a grilled cheese cheeseburger; it’s a cheeseburger in a grilled cheese sandwich made with Texas toast ($9.49). He said the sandwich was the best of both a classic grilled cheese

and a burger – lots of American cheese, a large ground beef patty and buttery bread. Both sandwiches came with a side of coleslaw and crinkle-cut french fries. The 318 doesn’t skimp on portion size, so this is a great stop when you’re hungry. The sandwiches are large and the appetizers are plentiful, so

we each had leftovers to take home and savor for later. • The Mystery Diner is an employee at Shaw Media. The diner’s identity is not revealed to restaurant staff when ordering or picking up the food. If the Mystery Diner cannot recommend the establishment, we will not publish a story.

NOTICE OF INTENT TO ISSUE BONDSAND RIGHT TO FILE PETITION AND HEARING ON PROPOSED ISSUANCE

Notice is hereby given that pursuant to Ordinance No. 2020-10-15-03, adopted October 15, 2020 (the “Ordinance”), the Village of Magnolia, Putnam County, Illinois (the “Village”), intends to issue its Water Revenue Bonds (the “Water Revenue Bonds”) or, in lieu thereof, its General Obligation Bonds (Alternate Revenue Source) (the “Alternate Bonds”), in the principal amount of not to exceed $260,000, and bearing interest per annum at not to exceed the maximum rate authorized by law at the time of the sale thereof, for the purpose of financing capital improvements within the Village (the “Project”), refunding certain outstanding obligations of the Village (the “Refunding”), and paying certain costs related to the issuance thereof. The Alternate Bonds would be payable from (i) Net Revenues derived from the operation by the Village of the Waterworks System (generally, Net Revenues means gross revenues minus operation and maintenance expenses) (“Net Water Revenues”) as authorized to be issued at this time pursuant to Division 129 of Article 11 of the Code, (ii) all collections distributed to the Village from Retailer's Occupation Taxes, Service Occupation Taxes, Use Taxes and Service Use Taxes (the “Sales Taxes”), and (iii) income taxes imposed by the State of Illinois pursuant to the Illinois Income Tax Act and distributed pursuant to the State Revenue Sharing Act (such distributive share referred to herein as the “Revenue Sharing Receipts” and, together with the Net Water Revenues and Sales Taxes, the “Pledged Revenues”). The Village will also levy ad valorem property taxes upon all taxable property in the Village without limitation as to rate or amount to pay the principal of and interest on the Alternate Bonds. Incorporation of Preambles. The Corporate Authorities hereby find that all of the recitals contained in the preambles to this Ordinance are full, true and correct and do incorporate them into this Ordinance by this reference. Section 2. Determination To Issue Bonds. It is advisable, necessary and in the best interests of the Village to complete the Project and the Refunding in accordance with the estimate of costs as hereinabove described, and that for such purpose, there are hereby authorized to be issued and sold the Water Revenue Bonds or, in lieu thereof, the Alternate Bonds, in an aggregate principal amount not to exceed $260,000. Section 3. Publication. Within ten (10) days after the adoption of this Ordinance, this Ordinance, together with a notice in the statutory form, shall be published once by the Corporate Authorities in the Putnam County Record, being a newspaper of general circulation within the Village, and if a petition, signed by 7 electors (said number being 10% of the registered voters in the Village), is filed with the Village Clerk within thirty (30) days after the date of the publication, asking that the question of the issuance of the Water Revenue Bonds (the “Water Revenue Bond Proposition”) be submitted to the electors of the Village, is filed with the Village Clerk within thirty (30) days after the date of the publication, then the Water Revenue Bond Proposition shall be submitted to the electors of the Village at the consolidated primary to be held on the 23rd day of February, 2021, unless there are no voters scheduled to cast votes for any candidates for nomination for, election to or retention in public office, in which case the Water Revenue Bond Proposition shall be submitted to the electors of the Village at the consolidated general election to be held on the 6th day of April, 2021. If no petition is filed with the Village Clerk within said 30 day period, then this Ordinance shall be in full force and effect and the Water Revenue Bonds shall be authorized to be issued. It is expressly provided that in the event that there shall be filed with the Village Clerk in a timely manner a petition, asking that the issuance of the Water Revenue Bonds be submitted to referendum, the Alternate Bonds, payable from Net Water Revenues, shall not be authorized to be issued until such time as the issuance of the Water Revenue Bonds shall have been submitted to the electors of the Village and a majority of the votes cast on such question shall have been in favor thereof. Section 4. Additional Ordinances. If no petition with respect to the issue of the Water Revenue Bonds or, in lieu thereof, the Alternate Bonds, and meeting the requirements of applicable law is filed during the petition period hereinabove referred to, then the Corporate Authorities may adopt additional ordinances or proceedings supplementing or amending this Ordinance providing for the issuance and sale of the Water Revenue Bonds or, in lieu thereof, the Alternate Bonds, and prescribing all the details of the Water Revenue Bonds or, in lieu thereof, the Alternate Bonds, so long as the maximum aggregate principal amount of the Water Revenue Bonds or, in lieu thereof, the Alternate Bonds, as set forth in this Ordinance is not exceeded and there is no material change in the Project or the Refunding. Such additional ordinances or proceedings shall in all instances become effective in accordance with applicable law. This Ordinance, together with such additional ordinances or proceedings, shall constitute complete authority for the issuance of the Water Revenue Bonds or, in lieu thereof, the Alternate Bonds, under applicable law. Section 5. Additional Proceedings. If no petition meeting the requirement of applicable law is filed during the petition period hereinabove referred to, then the preparation and distribution of a preliminary official statement relating to the Bonds is hereby approved, and the Village President is hereby authorized to deem the preliminary official statement nearly final. Section 6. Severability. If any section, paragraph, clause or provision of this Ordinance shall be held invalid or unenforceable, the invalidity or unenforceability of such section, paragraph, clause or provision shall not affect any of the other provisions of this Ordinance. Section 7. Repealer. All ordinances, resolutions or orders, or parts thereof, in conflict with the provisions of this Ordinance are to the extent of such conflict hereby repealed. Section 8.
