Village of Standard seeks donations to complete memorial to veterans KIM SHUTE

kshute@shawmedia.com STANDARD — Standard’s mayor is hoping to garner donations to complete a memorial in honor of its veterans by Veterans Day. Frank Vulcani said the idea of the memorial came from discussions with friends Joel Ellena and Bill Haage, who is a veteran. They approached the village board, which approved the idea and the location adjacent to the village hall.

Vulcani said the small size of the village, which makes neighbors into friends, lacks the ability to fund passion projects through grants so he’s appealing to the people of the community to honor their own.

“So far, donations have been more than fair,” Vulcani said. “We can’t rely on grants like a lot of bigger towns. If anyone here can kick in, every little bit helps.”

The village has been able to pour a large concrete pad and install flag pole bases for the branches of the military along with one for the U.S. and Prisoners of War, but that phase of the project has emptied the coffers.

“If people can donate, that’s great,“ Vulcani said, “And whatever we can get, the village will try to kick in as well.”

Meeting catalyst to youth projects, community service projects University of Illinois Extension invites all current Master Gardener and Master Naturalist volunteers from Putnam, Marshall, Bureau and LaSalle counties to a Cultivating Connections meeting 6 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 18, at the University of Illinois Extension Education Center and Community Teaching Kitchen, 944 First St., LaSalle.

All Master Gardener and Master Naturalist volunteers and Extension’s 4-H staff team will meet together to connect with the 4-H coordinators in

each county, discuss current programming and new plans, learn about local partnership opportunities, share ideas, and plan and schedule events for 2022. This meeting will be the catalyst to making communities more aware of educational programs, engaging youth and adults in natural resources and the environment, and completing community service projects to beautify the area this year, with help and expertise.

OSF HealthCare receives FCC grant for COVID-19 telehealth efforts

OSF has completed nearly 93,000 virtual visits since start of pandemic PEORIA — The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has announced that OSF HealthCare is the recipient of $943,644 in grant money through Round 2 of its COVID19 Telehealth Program. This funding is part of more than $41 million in grant money awarded recently by the FCC to health care agencies throughout the country to assist in providing telehealth services during the coronavirus pandemic.

OSF has completed nearly 93,000 virtual visit encounters since the beginning of the pandemic, with many of these visits occurring in low-income, underserved and rural counties. The funding from the FCC’s COVID-19 Telehealth Program will allow that work to continue, specifically providing telehealth devices for

video and telephonic connections between patients and providers, with a particular focus on the low-income and hardest-hit areas across the communities it serves.

“We are elated that OSF HealthCare is among the deserving health care agencies receiving this funding, and are extremely grateful our elected representatives recognize the important role telehealth plat- David Hall, f o r m s p l a y i n t h e M.D., chief COVID-19 era,” said information David Hall, M.D., chief information officer, OSF officer, OSF HealthCare HealthCare.

He continued, “Throughout the pandemic, OSF HealthCare has worked tirelessly to find innovative ways to provide care using telehealth technology. Our clinicians are using telehealth technologies to facilitate inpatient clinical care in our ICU’s, general floors and

through our Hospital at Home services. We are also leveraging telehealth in the ambulatory space to provide remote care from our offices, and via our COVID-19 dedicated phone support. OSF’s mission is to serve all persons with the greatest care and love and OSF’s investment in technology gives us one more tool to facilitate this care no matter where a patient is located.”

The FCC’s COVID-19 Telehealth Program was established in the Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security (CARES) Act. It has now provided help for health care providers in each state, territory and the District of Columbia to provide telehealth and connected care services to patients in their homes or mobile locations in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“The FCC has now approved a total of over $83 million in funding applications for Round 2 of its COVID-19 Telehealth Program. From community health clinics in urban city centers to hospitals serving rural com-

munities across the country, these funds will support efforts to help our neighbors remain in the care of their doctors, nurses, physician assistants and trusted health care providers during this pandemic,” said Acting Chairwoman Jessica Rosenworcel.

“I’d like to thank the FCC’s Wireline Competition Bureau for their continued work on this critical program which continues to make an impact on the health and well-being of all Americans.”

Round 2 is a $249.95 million federal initiative that builds on the $200 million program established as part of the CARES Act. As outlined in the Round 2 Report and Order, once $150 million in funding has been committed, the FCC’s Wireline Competition Bureau will announce an opportunity for all remaining applicants to supplement their applications, as required

by Congress. After all remaining applicants have the opportunity to supplement, the remaining program funding will be committed.

Local German witchdancing group shares what it takes to be a hag GOLDIE RAPP

grapp@bcrnews.com It seems as if The Hocus Pocus Hags are this year’s newest Halloween hit in the area.

You’ve might have seen them perform in parades, or at Boggio’s Orchard, or at area witches walks, maybe even at a local Halloween event. They’re suddenly popping up performing everywhere it feels.

But this witch-dancing group has actually been around for the past five years, and have grown bigger and better each year, with the exception of last year due to COVID, of course.

The group started with four area women who became inspired by the idea of German witch dancing they came across on Facebook.

When Denise Jeppson of Granville just happened to see it pop up on her Facebook page, she told her husband at the time that she thought it looked fun and that she could do it for a group of people. So she gathered up three of her closest friends, Mary Nielsen of Spring Valley, Jackie Curran of LaSalle and

DeMarie Newton of Peru, who quickly jumped on board and recruited 13 women to perform that first year.

Practices started out in the Jeppson’s garage, but as the group grew larger, more space was needed. So the prac-

tices were moved to Nielsen’s Jazzercise studio in Spring Valley.

Nielsen became the group’s choreographer by learning the dances from Facebook videos and teaching them to the women.

Add in some spooky makeup, witch costumes, a wig here and there and an old broom and The Hocus Pocus Hags were born.

• HOCUS POCUS Continued from Page 5 Their first year, they performed only one dance during the Spring Valley Lions Club Halloween parade, but women from the area saw that performance and quickly reached out wanting to join the group.

Over the years, the group grew from 13 members to now anywhere around 35 members.

“Once a few women saw it, it just grew,” Jeppson said. “I can’t believe the women who wanted to learn this.”

Today, women come and go from the group. It all depends on availability and the willingness to show up to practice and learn the dances. This year, the group also recruited its first warlock.

Its members come from all over the Illinois Valley area — Princeton, Hennepin, Spring Valley, Granville, LaSalle, Peru, Lostant, Oglesby, etc.

They come from all walks of life, too. There are nurses, teachers, office assistants, business owners, retirees and more. And they’re of all ages ranging from teens to woman in their 70s and 80s.

“It doesn’t matter your age. If it’s something you like to do, have a good time and put smiles on people’s faces — that’s all it takes,” Jeppson said.

Most of the women in the group say

they do it for the kids.

Curran said she gets so much enjoyment out of seeing the kids’ faces light up when they’re performing.

“You try not to smile so much because you’re suppose to be a witch, but you just can’t help it,” she said.

“That’s the main reason I do it. It’s not for myself, it’s for them.”

It’s a positive experience for all the women, and a good way to grow confidence.

Nielsen said she’s met many women who never imagined ever stepping out in front of a crowd and performing with crazy makeup on their faces.

“This puts you outside of your comfort zone, and that’s the best part,” she said. “It’s nice because nobody can tell who you are under your makeup and costume. You can be somebody you never were.”

The women say they never imagined the group becoming as popular as it has in the area. What started as a fun idea to get out of the house and have a good time, has blown up into a highly-demanded dance group that people love watching perform.

“It’s almost like you’re a celebrity,” Nielsen said. “During the month of October, everybody wants to know where you’re dancing, if they can come see us, if our performance is open to the public. There are so many questions, but it’s fun, it’s very fulfilling. It makes you feel good.”

Once Oct. 31 is over, the rule of The Hocus Pocus Hags is to hang up the broom until next October.

“We don’t come out for any other holiday event or parade outside of Halloween,” explained Nielsen. “We want to be a treat when we come out and we try to keep things fresh. We don’t want the crowd to get tired of us.”

Being a Hocus Pocus Hag is more than just performing. It’s about friendship, creating bonds with other women and being there for one another during life’s challenges. That just may be what makes the time they’re together for one month out of the year so rewarding.

“The bond between the ladies is amazing,” said Newton. “These women — we know a lot about each other and sometimes we don’t know anything about one another, but we know for one month of dancing … we’re a group of women who are powerful and just good blood. We’re hard-working women and we never say no to anybody because we want to make people happy. I think the crowd feels how fun this is for us and they love it and we thrive on that.”

The Hocus Pocus Hags do not charge a fee to perform for parties, parades or events, however Jeppson said if an organizer would like to pay, the group prefers that they instead make a donation to any local, charitable organization in the name of The Hocus Pocus Hags.

Those interested in becoming a part of the group can follow The Hocus Pocus Hags Facebook page to learn more information and reach out that way. While this year is too late to join, the group will be looking for witches next year. Practices will begin in August 2022, with performances beginning October 2022.

NEWS BRIEFS Granville man identified as deceased in Cedar Point crash

The motorist killed Saturday on Route 71 in Cedar Point has been identified as Daniel Ramirez, 43, of Granville.

Ramirez was pronounced dead at the scene after Cedar Point Fire Department arrived shortly before 9:30 p.m., said Cedar Point Fire Chief Allen Haeffner. His vehicle left the roadway, struck a utility pole and then the Cedar Point motel.

An investigative autopsy was completed Sunday. The crash will be under further investigation by the Illinois State Police and the LaSalle County Coroner’s Office.

The Cedar Point Fire Department was assisted by Standard Fire Department, Tonica Fire Department Ambulance, Oglesby Fire and EMS, Illinois State Police, LaSalle County Sheriff’s Office and LaSalle County Coroner’s Office.

Veterans Day lunch set for Nov. 11 in Standard

STANDARD — The Putnam County Community Center will hold a special Veterans Day lunch on Thursday, Nov. 11, beginning at 11:30 a.m.

Lunch will be served at 11:30 a.m. with the menu consisting of fried chicken with mashed potatoes and gravy, corn, fruit and dessert. The meal will be free for all veterans.

After lunch, at 12:30 p.m., local veteran and historian Ron Bluemer will present a program on military museums along the Pensacola, Fla., coast.

If you would like to attend, call the PCCC at least 24 hours in advance to make your lunch reservation. Face coverings are required in the building when not eating or drinking.

Putnam County second graders visit Al Cioni Ford

On Oct. 13, a beautiful, sunny day, the second graders from Putnam County Primary visited Al Cioni Ford in Granville to learn the importance of sales and service. The second grade class sure came to the right place for Al Cioni Ford just won the 2020 President’s Award for Outstanding Customer Sales and Service of Excellence; Ford’s highest honor.

In service, Jared Vaessen, the service manager, taught the second graders how to measure tread depth and the condition on tires. He also taught them how to replace brakes and what the components are. Lastly, he taught them how to inspect the underside of a car using the hoist. They had a lot of interactive fun.

Switching it up to the sales side, the second graders had a blast learning the steps in the sales process, from when the

car gets delivered to the dealership all the way to showing the customer all the technology in the vehicle and downloading FordPass App where the customer can earn points to be used back in the service department when buying a new vehicle. Their favorite was getting to pretend to be a salesman, pointing out features they liked in order to try and sell the new F150 that was on the lot. It was a blast hearing all their comments.

Most comments were on the great comfort of the vehicle and the American Flag Easter egg found in the F150.

The visit finally ended with some pretty cool trivia about the new Ford Maverick truck that will hit the ground very soon along with the two-door and four-door Ford Bronco.

St. Margaret to consolidate obstetrical services to Peru

Obstetrics category of service will be discontinued in Spring Valley St. Margaret’s Health will consolidate its obstetrical services to its Peru campus.

St. Margaret’s intends to file an appli-

cation in late October with the Illinois Health Facilities and Services Review Board to discontinue the obstetrics category of service at its Spring Valley campus.

The hospital anticipates the Review Board will consider the application in mid-December. If the application is approved, the consolidation will occur within 60 days.

“This consolidation will allow St.

Margaret’s to combine its excellent obstetrical services to one location, while enabling more efficient utilization of resources and improvement of the organization’s financial health,” St. Margaret’s said in a press release issued Oct. 20.

St. Margaret’s said since it took in the Peru hospital Jan. 1, it has been conducting an assessment of its clinical programs and this decision was based on that assessment.

Concert will celebrate 250th anniversary of Beethoven’s birth The Illinois Valley Symphony Orchestra, under the direction of Music Director and Conductor Daniel Sommerville, will present “Belated Beethoven Bash!” at 7 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 30, at the LaSalle-Peru High School’s Matthiessen Auditorium, celebrating the 250th anniversary of the birth of Ludwig Van Beethoven.

LaSalle-Peru High School graduate and Peru native Sherry Rubins will be featured soloist in Darius Milhaud’s colorful “Concerto for Marimba and Vibraphone, op. 278.” The program will also include Beethoven’s “Symphony No. 1,” Franz Schubert’s “Rosamunde Overture,” and “The Moldau”

by Bedrich Smetana.

Sherry Rubins is professor of practice and coordinator of the percussion program at the University of Texas at San Antonio. Rubins directs the percussion and steel drum ensembles and teaches undergraduate and graduate percussion majors. Rubins is principal timpanist with the Mid-Texas Symphony, the Victoria Bach Festival and the Mozart Festival Texas (San Antonio). Recently, she held the position of acting principal timpanist and acting assistant principal timpanist/percussionist with the San Antonio Symphony. She frequently performs as a substitute musician with the San Antonio Symphony.

As a busy freelance percussionist, she has contracted and played for numerous touring shows including A Tribute to Prince, Weird Al and Hugh Jackman. She has presented clinics and performances throughout the south Texas area, the Texas Music Educators Association, the Texas Bandmasters Association Convention, the Music for All National Percussion Symposium in Indianapolis, the Midwest Band and Orchestra clinic, and the Percussive Arts Society International Convention.

Rubins is an artist/educational clinician for the Zildjian/Vic Firth Company, Remo Percussion and the Yamaha Corporation. She has been featured on the Zildjian, Texas Music Educators and Vic Firth websites.

Rubins is an active long-time member of the Percussive Arts Society, where she recently finished her term on the board of advisors. In the past she also served as vice president of the Texas Chapter of PAS. Rubins received her bachelor’s degree in music education at Western Illinois University. She began her graduate studies at Baylor University and finished her master’s degree in music performance at the University of Texas at San Antonio. She resides in San Antonio, Texas, with her husband Peter and their son Matthew.

The YM-5100 marimba and YV-3910 vibraphone on which Rubins will perform are provided on loan by the Yamaha Corporation of America with help from The Music Shoppe, located in Normal, Champaign and Springfield.

Stage 212 explores living with loss in its fall 2021 production of “Rabbit Hole,” the Pulitzer Prize-winning drama by David Lindsay-Abaire.

Becca and Howie Corbett have everything a family could want, until a life-shattering accident turns their world upside down and leaves the couple drifting perilously apart. “Rabbit Hole” charts their bittersweet search for comfort in the darkest of places and for a path that will lead them back into the light of day.

Putnam County Schools seeking greater transparency

Putnam County #535 Community: In an effort to be sure all community members are receiving updates and information about our schools, the district and student learning, we will be collaborating with the “Putnam County Record” to regularly report on events and progress.

This effort is part of a larger plan to increase communications and overall transparency of the district with students, parents/guardians, families and the larger community. In addition to regular reporting in the newspaper, we will be developing social media pages with highlights of student learning across the schools.

The building principals and I will also continue with regular messages to families that include notices and reminders.

Enhancing and increasing our communications is only the beginning of greater improvement efforts at PC #535. Later this year, we will start a strategic planning process to set a vision and large-scale goals to serve as the focal point for student learning improvement and overall growth of

the district. As the hub of Putnam County, we want to ensure that our schools are celebrated for its rich history while defining a path and plan of action for the many years ahead.

Every student who attends PC schools deserves a well-rounded education that leads to promising transitions and livelihoods. This strategic plan is a renewal of that assurance for students.

While looking ahead, we also want to remind you of the improvements made in the past few years. Some of these improvements are as follows: • Redefining programs of study at PCHS to align with post-secondary outcomes.

• Expansion of the fine arts program by adding another music teacher.

• Adding advanced placement courses and increasing student access to dual credit placements.

• Updating the K-5 core curriculum.

• Enhanced security measures in all schools.

• Facility upgrades, including new boilers at PCJH. • … and many more.

We anticipate the planning later this year will provide opportunity for

stakeholder involvement and feedback. Nonetheless, I encourage anyone with questions or comments regarding PC #535 and its schools to contact me anytime at theisingerc@ pcschools535.org.

$5,000 scholarship will award single parents, survivors of domestic violence OGLESBY — Retired Illinois Valley Community College counselor Kathy Notbohm of Tonica recently created an endowed scholarship through the college foundation.

Notbohm’s $5,000 scholarship will award single parents; preference will be given to survivors of domestic violence.

Notbohm retired from full-time counseling at IVCC in 1997 after 28 years. Before IVCC, she was a resident advisor at Northern Illinois University and for six years prior to that a junior high and high school physical education and health teacher in the Dundee School District.

She grew up on a farm near Mount Vernon, Iowa, and attended a one-room schoolhouse. Her mother Eloise was a teacher and her father Rudolph a farmer. She earned

a bachelor’s from the University of Dubuque and a master’s from NIU. Notbohm served on the board and was a volunteer for the domestic violence shelter in Streator, ADV & SAS, now known as Safe Journeys. She was one of the first two women to become volunteer “Red Coats” at the former Illinois Valley Community Hospital and also helped the hospital’s social work department.

She delivered food for the Illinois Valley Food Pantry and served as a trustee for Tonica’s village board.

While wintering 16 years in Casa Grande, Arizona, she volunteered to drive elderly individuals to doctor’s appointments and collected items to take to the recycling center.

“It is so gratifying to see another philanthropic retiree give back so generously to our college,” said IVCC President Jerry Corcoran. “At $5,000, Kathy’s award will be life-changing for a single parent.”

OBITUARIES Born: October 19, 1930 Died: October 17, 2021 Sister Rosalie Noder was born October 19, 1930, in McNabb, Illinois, the oldest of three children of Michael Joseph and Charlotte Grasser Noder. She was baptized Phyllis Barbara on November 1, 1930, in St. Mary, Immaculate Conception Church in Mt. Palatine, Illinois. She had one brother, Michael Joseph and one sister, Frances Ione.

Phyllis attended McNabb public grade school and Swaney Grade School in McNabb; St. Mary’s Grade School in Henry, Illinois; and

Mount St. Clare Academy in Clinton, Iowa.

She entered the congregation of the Sisters of St. Francis at Mount St. Clare Convent on September 8, 1948, and received the name Mary Rosalie at her reception on June 20, 1949. She made her first profession on August 13, 1951, and her final vows on August 13, 1954.

Sister Rosalie obtained an A.A. degree from Mount St. Clare College, a B.S. in Education from Creighton University, Omaha, Nebraska, and an M. M. in Ministry from Seattle University, Seattle, Washington. She was also certified as a liturgical minister through the Liturgical Institute, Diocese of Chicago, and San Anselmo, Rome.

Sister Rosalie’s early ministry was in education, teaching primary and intermediate grades in Iowa, Illinois, and California. During the 60’s, she felt called to become involved in the faith life of adults. In 1969, Sister Rosalie

began to serve in parish ministry at St. Francis de Paula in Chicago. In her fourteen years there, she began a food pantry, a clothing center, a senior citizens’ club, and the first RCIA classes. Through her efforts, a religious education program that included a cluster of six other parishes was developed. She did further parish ministry at St. Gall’s in Chicago, St. Patrick of Merna in Bloomington, and St. Charles Borromeo in Hampshire, Illinois.

Following a month-long study pilgrimage to Assisi and during a year of ministry in rural Hampshire, IL, Sister Rosalie recognized a call to serve persons who were suffering from AIDS. In 1991, she became co-founder and first Executive Director of AIDS Ministry of Illinois in Joliet. She also served in positions such as Outreach Services Coordinator, Educator and Case Manager, as she continued to meet the various challenges that her ministry involved.

Sister Rosalie retired in December 2002, and volunteered at Catholic Charities of Joliet, Illinois, in the Foster Grandparents program until 2006. She then came to live at The Canticle in Clinton, Iowa, where she actively ministered in any way she could. Even as her eyesight failed, her spirit of joy and compassion endured. She moved to The Alverno in July 2019. She died at MercyOne Medical Center, Clinton, on October 17, 2021.

According to her request, her body has been donated to the University of Iowa for scientific purposes, her final gift of self for the benefit of others. Burial will be at a later date.

Sister Rosalie was preceded in death by her parents, siblings, and brother-in-law, Delbert Sanders.

She is survived by the Sisters of St. Francis with whom she shared life for 73 years, her sister-in-law, Helen Noder, a niece and several nephews, cousins and friends.

Three arrested after incident involving a gun on Saturday at Illinois Valley YMCA in Peru defend himself. Officers located the man and retrieved the firearm from a vehicle.

Some callers told police the man was leaving and taking a child that was not his own. A girl was inside the vehicle and was unharmed — and with the man voluntarily, police said.

This case still is under investigation and will be reviewed by the LaSalle County State’s Attorney’s Office to determine if additional charges will be filed.

“I would like to commend the quick response and resolution to this case by the patrol division,” said Peru Police Chief Bob Pyszka. “If it weren’t for that quick response and action of the patrol division, this situation could have ended up far worse.”

Three men were arrested Saturday afternoon at the Illinois Valley YMCA in Peru after police received several reports of a man with a gun at the facility.

Mark J. Judd, 39, of Hennepin, was arrested on a complaint of unlawful use of a weapon and taken to the LaSalle County Jail. Andrew Martinez, 35, of Utica was arrested on a complaint of battery and released with a LaSalle County court date. Credit plays a vital role in helping people realize their personal and financial goals. A good credit score can help people qualify for favorable home loan terms, ultimately paving the way for them to move into their dream homes. Strong credit histories also can help consumers earn perks, and young people who learn to use credit wisely can avoid potentially costly interest charges that tend to hamper many young adults’ financial freedom.

Many consumers struggle with managing credit. According to FICO¨, a data analytics company that developed the FICO score that many lenders use to determine consumer credit risk, more than 10 percent of consumers in the United States have credit scores lower than 550. Any score below 550 is considered very poor.

No two consumers are the same, but many struggling to establish good credit histories may engage in certain behaviors that can hurt their credit scores.

■ Taking out too many lines of credit: Consumers without much experience managing their finances, such as college students and young adults, often find credit offers hard to resist. Retailers may offer significant discounts at checkout counters to shoppers willing

to sign up for store credit cards. Inexperienced consumers may not recognize that such cards often feature inflated interest rates, especially when compared to more consumer-friendly cards. Avoid opening too many credit accounts, as doing so can adversely affect your credit score and make it easy to lose track of spending.

■ Letting interest charges pile up: Paying interest on consumer debt like credit cards will not help consumers improve their credit scores, so pay balances off immediately. That’s easier to do if you only have one or two lines of credit that you monitor regularly.

■ Using credit for daily purchases: Credit is not cash in your pocket and it isn’t money withdrawn directly from a checking or savings account, which is the case when using a debit card.

So it’s easy for consumers to lose track of their daily spending if they’re doing that spending with a credit card. Balances can quickly pile up and, if they can’t be paid off in full when the bill comes due, interest charges will begin to accumulate. This trap can be avoided if consumers commit to using credit only in emergency situations or when purchasing big-ticket items that they know they can pay off when the

credit card bill is due.

■ Failing to monitor credit score: It’s now easier than ever for consumers to track their credit scores. In fact, many credit card companies provide free monthly updates to card holders, who won’t have to lift a finger to see if their scores have improved or worsened over the last 30 days. Consumers should take advantage of this relatively recent perk so they can see

Veteran interviews will be shown every Tuesday through Nov. 16 JAYCE EUSTICE

jeustice@shawmedia.com Tuesday at the North Central Illinois Artworks Gallery in Peru was filled with emotion, respect and remembrance as many gathered to view a collection of interviews of local World War II veterans speaking about their experiences.

The veteran interviews were recorded about 20 years ago and since have been preserved at the Richard A. Mautino Library in Spring Valley. Now they are available for viewing thanks to NCI Artworks Executive Director Julia Messina,.

“I’m on the board at the library and I just asked the question ‘Remember those videos that they did 20 years ago, has anyone ever checked those out?’”

Messina said. “They told me no, and I said ‘I’m going to fix that.’ There’s a way to do this so that people can see their grandpas and great grandpas.”

NCI Artworks used the interview to host World War II Tuesdays, an event that will run from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. every Tuesday through Nov. 16 at 400 Fifth St. in Peru.

Veterans Eugene Klein, Hank Mahnich, Louis Malooley, Ray Michael, John Picco, Dom Rochetto and John Ruskusky were featured in the first showing.

Although some of the veterans showcased in the interviews are still alive, some have passed away since they were recorded.

For some families, the recorded interviews gives them a unique opportunity to see loved ones who might have passed away and to hear stories they might not have heard.

For Dan Dolan and his family who traveled from Morton, being able to watch the interviews was an experience they’ll never forget. Dolan’s grandfather, Louis Malooley, also was featured during Tuesday’s showing.

“I’ve been looking for videos so my kids can meet my grandpa forever,” Dolan said. “So this is crazy that it worked out this way because, for the last year really, I’ve been hunting hard trying to find home videos and nobody has any of them.”

Interest from the families of the featured veterans has been extensive as NCI Artworks has scheduled private screenings for many families to accommodate the large number they expect in attendance.

“It’s amazing, this one woman from France saw it on Facebook and she called her cousins over here and said, ‘Let’s go see her dad,’” Messina said.

Families have made plans to travel from across the world to see their loved ones in their own words, some for the first time.

Although the family appeal is substantial, visitor Christopher Kmetz said it’s not just family members who should take the time to hear the veterans’ stories. Kmetz was happy to be there and to support the initiative and said events like this are important to the community.

“I think it’s a way to let the local

people know about all the WWII veterans in the area and who their local heroes are,” Kmetz said. “It’s about the stories that they can tell. This is the way to do it. It’s important that we recognize that we have a lot of heroes in our area that we don’t really stop and think about.”

Dan Zissler and Tom Marenda, who grew up around many of the names planned to be featured, also said they believe these showings are important to keep the words and the images of these veterans alive and well.

“It’s important to hear from the people who were there,” Zissler said.

“This is a great way of preserving that history. It’s more than just interesting because a lot of the guys that were in combat never talk about it and it’s quite remarkable that these gentlemen at some point in their lives decided to talk about it.”

The recorded stories shared combat perspectives and gave viewers a glimpse into veterans’ minds and feelings.

“There’s a few people who I knew that I really want to listen to,” Marenda said. “I want to listen to all of them, though.”

During the Oct. 26 screening, visitors heard from recorded veterans James Barto, Jack Cassiday, Paul

Khoury, Jim Coutts, Ralph Engelman, Carl Blum, Al Brady and Jim Jenkins.

The Nov. 2 screening will feature Thurman Dwyer, Bob Blum, Dwyer and Blum, John Krueger, Helen O’ Halloran, Charles Palia and Don Fescenmeyer.

The Nov. 9 screening will feature Al Kalupka, Tom Sobin, Sr. “Red” Withrow, Bud Pizzamiglio, Norm Sebastian, Ed Wood, Ed Zeglis and John Troy.

The Nov. 16 screening will feature Mike Chiaventone, Tom McNally, Burl George, Joe Nimee and Earl Michael.

The Right Spice in Peru hits all the right flavors There are supper clubs that characterize the Illinois Valley region’s taste: The Right Spice in Peru is one of them.

Upon entering, patrons walk into a tavern with seating, but a host will lead the way to one of two dining rooms, including one set behind the bar that immediately transforms the experience into nice casual dining.

There’s also plenty of outdoor dining along Pike Street.

Known for its prime rib and tavern fried chicken, the menu also features five varieties of “Oscars,” which offer meat dishes served over a bed of rice and topped by crab meat, asparagus and bearnaise sauce. The menu put me in a tight spot, because as much as I love chicken Oscar, I cannot pass up good tavern fried chicken.

Given that hand-dipped onion rings ($6.95) on the appetizer menu can be a window into how the fried chicken may taste, my dinner companion and I opted for them and some sweet corn nuggets ($7.45). Usually a restaurant that boasts a good fried chicken also makes good homemade onion rings.

Our intuition was right.

The onion rings were a highlight for us. We loved how lightly breaded they were, allowing diners to taste the onion inside. Other appetizer options range from cheese sticks, baked pretzel and breaded mushrooms to shrimp cocktail and a combo platter.

I knew I was in for a treat when the fried chicken was served. The breading was crispy and crunchy, and the chicken beneath piping hot.

My only regret is that I ordered the quarter ($11.45), instead of a half so I could enjoy some more at home.

The meal is served with a salad, coleslaw or cottage cheese, as well as a choice of French fries, baked potato or wild rice, or tater tots for an extra $1.50. I opted for the plentiful serving of tots.

The meat sauce was a pleasant surprise, because it had a sweet taste and good tidbits of meat in it.

My companion ordered one of the night’s specials, which was a sizable filet of walleye fried, broiled or Cajun’d ($19.95). She selected Cajun’d, broiled and seasoned to add a

burst of flavor. When people think Cajun, they think hot, but this wasn’t the case. Diners can order this blend of spices with other meats on the menu. Her dinner also came with a baked potato and salad. When the salad was served, a loaf of fresh white bread was placed on the table.

The Right Spice has a full

menu of steaks, chops, ribs, pasta, seafood and sandwiches. The prime rib, which is served on Fridays and Saturdays only, has a good reputation, and will be worthy of a future trip.

For fried chicken and prime rib lovers, or diners who love Oscars, The Right Spice is your kind of place.

From what I’ve learned, that’s most of the Illinois Valley.
