news@putnamcountyrecord.com GRANVILLE — The Putnam County School Board has voted to move forward with a progressive and ambitious solar project at each of the district’s four schools.

The board had seen full presentations from solar companies several months ago at a previous meeting, so at the Oct. 15 meeting, Superintendent Carl Carlson asked Greg Williams, the representative from Siemens, and Yona Lunken, representing Chart House Energy, to give shortened presentations summarizing their offers.

Williams’ presentation included details and benefits of the project’s power purchase agreement (PPA) versus the district owning the solar arrays; the financial aspects; the specifics of utility usage, delivery and costs; and the educational opportunities that working with Siemens would provide.

The benefits of Siemens’ PPA offer include that it will be solely financed through the company’s incentivization of tax credits, the district not having to find funding through taxpayers, single-point accountability, and the stability of a long company history.

“Through a PPA, we’ll be the ones worrying about the design, installation, financing, interconnection, permits, maintenance, insurance, repairs and maximizing production.

All you’ll have to worry about is educating your students and paying the invoice for production,” Williams told the board, adding the company has a “triple bottom line — people, the planet, and profit.”

Following the presentation from Siemens, it was Lunken’s turn to present for Chart House Energy. However, he said he had already made a presentation and only added, “We can save your district 25 percent.”

After questions to both parties, the board first voted to move forward with a district-wide solar project.

Then came time to decide which company would be selected.

“I look for a thorough presentation with details in order to make a decision of this magnitude, which is my recommendation to this group,” Carlson said.

The board voted 3-1 to proceed with Siemens. Board members Jason Judd, Rollie Copeland and Rhiannon Baker voted yes. Owen Mallory voted no, despite seconding the motion to choose Siemens. Adriane Shore and James Gibson abstained because of an outside friendship with Lunken, and board member Laurie Glenn wasn’t present.

Wash., to present at an assembly for the students at 10 a.m., visiting classrooms at 11 a.m. and 12:30 p.m., and writing poetry with 4th graders at 1 p.m.

Nesbitt will stay and present a family night at the PC Elementary School, with

refreshments being served by the PTO from 5:30 to 6 p.m. The program will begin at 6 p.m. and last until 7 p.m.

Nesbitt’s expenses are being paid by a grant from the Putnam County Educational Foundation.

In other board news: • Carlson reported the state currently owes the district $165,920 in mandated funding, including more than $134,000 for transportation and more than $28,000 for special education. “There’s also been some speculation and concern about the mandatory categorical payments and whether we’ll be receiving all of them,” he said.

• Some of the district’s bus routes have been temporarily rerouted because of railroad construction.

The high school will have 37 percent of its power needs met through the ground-mounted renewable energy source; the junior high 84 percent with a roof array; the elementary school 92 percent with a roof array; and the primary school 83 percent through a ground-mounted array. The lower percentage at the high school is related to the lights at the athletic fields, and Williams said there could possibly be a way to install additional panels over the shelters to increase the output.

“We only like to install roof arrays on roofs less than seven to 10 years old because if you need to replace a roof, then we have to uninstall and re-install the arrays, and this cost would be the district’s responsibility,” Williams said.

Siemens’ solar panels are designed to operate at an 80 percent to 85 percent efficiency rate at 25 years old and are considered a 40-year asset.

Following the end of the 20-year agreement, the district can choose to purchase the systems at a fair market value, extend the agreement, or end it and have the panels removed.

Siemens also has several structured educational opportunities the district will be able to take advantage of to help educate students about renewable energy, delivery, costs and usage.

Granville in good fiscal condition moving forward Village will also be looking into solar ordinances

BY DAVE COOK news@putnamcountyrecord.com GRANVILLE — The village of Granville will be entering the next fiscal year in good financial shape following the announcement of approved appropriation figures and the first bond payment toward the McCoy Street project.

“We’re a little close in some areas, but have some cushion in others, so overall we’ll be in good financial shape as long as we’re careful,” board member Jim Petit reported at the Oct. 16 Granville Village Board meeting.

Petit announced the village would be expecting roughly $717,000 in revenue for the fiscal year in the General Fund, with about $714,000 in expenses. The Water/Sewer Fund was expected to produce approxi-

mately $666,000 in revenue with about $517,000 in expenses. Overall, the village’s appropriation for the next fiscal year totals $8.84 million.

The workers have had to deal with a broken pipe that occurred after the plant’s second shutdown, but otherwise there have been no issues. He also reported the final plant shutdown will take place after Oct. 26, and no interruptions to the village’s water supply are expected.

The board said they were concerned with setting a bad precedent that could cause problems with that property and others in the future.

Solar projects

Village engineer Mike Richetta reported the plans for the final stages of the McCoy Street improvements are complete and that the

Building and Zoning Inspector Steve Haun told the board the zoning commission had recommended approval of a resident’s request for a zoning variance regarding the construction of a new garage and driveway at 323 W. Main St. The board was concerned the new driveway wouldn’t be long enough to keep vehicles parked on it safe from passing snow plows. There was also concern regarding the site’s true property lines and advised the owner to have his property surveyed before they made a final decision.

Village attorney Brad Popurella advised the board to become knowledgeable about the county’s zoning ordinance in anticipation of future solar projects. He said the county is discussing a solar project on land Granville annexed in 2013.

“Even if they don’t have jurisdiction, they may be setting things in motion that will be of interest to the village, which is why that land was included in the TIF district,” he said.

He said his advice wasn’t intended to be adversarial to the project, but was to encourage the board to become knowledgeable of solar ordinances because eventually they would be approached about such projects.

“There’s something of a race for funding with these projects, and it would be in the village’s best interest to be prepared,” he said.

Hennepin proceeds with plan for security camera installations

Clerk shares information on the process for absentee voting

Village will first buy a single camera to research technical requirements

BY DAVE COOK news@putnamcountyrecord.com HENNEPIN — During the Oct. 17 Hennepin Village Board meeting, members were in agreement in continuing their exploration of possibly installing security cameras near the village’s few exits and entrances.

“If a child were abducted, God forbid — you can’t put a price on that,” member Lynn Haage said in regards to residents concerned with the cost of such a project.

The board was in consensus to first buy a single camera in order to allow Rocket Communications to determine the potential system’s bandwidth and configuration requirements.

According to member Quentin Buffington, the 12-megapixel camera will have high resolution, a 160-foot range, infrared capabilities, and a cost of approximately $1,000 to $1,500.

The system would feed into the sheriff’s office and would be monitored only if needed. Powering the system individually proved cost-inhibitive, so the village will be seeking ways to piggyback onto existing locations with power where they can and then entering into agreements to pay the cost differences.

School safety Board member Karyn Christiansen reported she had met with Put-

nam County Elementary Principal Courtney Balestri to discuss how to improve the traffic and safety issues surrounding the school.

Before limiting parking options in the area, Kevin Coleman Christiansen said BalHennepin estri recommended the establishment of a village president one-way only, flowing route of vehicular traffic as parents drop off or pick up their children. The school has already changed the exit path for students leaving the building, and Balestri said she would work with the village if they decided to make additional changes.

Hennepin water issues Nic Keegan, of the village’s water district, thanked the village for helping to fund the water main improvements during the High Street project. The district has made the first $500 payment to pay back the village for the infrastructure work.

Village engineer Bill Shafer reported he had met with residents in regard to those areas along High Street where drainage was a problem near their driveways.

“We’re going to install trench drains across those drives. It’s a joint problem, and it will be on both the village and the owners, so we’ve decided the village will handle the material costs and they’ll help with the labor,” Shafer said.

until their sub-contractor returns to re-seed the muddy areas along this year’s street project. According to Shafer, the contractor has missed multiple opportunities this year to complete the work, and time to do it this year is running out.

The village made repairs this summer to the fountain in Hazel Marie Boyle Park, but there appears to still be a leakage issue. Workers are planning on shutting off the water to the fountain in an attempt to isolate and locate the problem that is suspected to be in an underground pipe.

In other board news: • Village attorney Sheryl Churney is helping the board to draft a policy concerning village donations. The policy will require the village to set criteria to donate only to organizations or events that benefit residents in some way.

There will be a limit of $50 per donation, with exclusions for educational groups. The exclusion will allow the board to donate increased amounts to those groups at its discretion. Additionally, no donations will be allowed to political, religious, for-profit or discriminatory organizations.

• Halloween hours have been set for the village. Celebrations at the fire department will begin at 5 p.m. on Oct. 31, and trick-or-treating will take place from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

• The board would also like to remind residents that the village’s commemorative bicentennial wine is available for Christmas gifts at cost. Individual bottles are available at $14 each, and cases are $165.

HENNEPIN — Putnam County Clerk Daniel S. Kuhn announces that absentee voting for the upcoming Nov. 6 general election is now in progress.

“Any registered voter who expects to be absent from the county on Nov. 6 may make application by mail or in person to the county clerk to receive an official ballot,” Kuhn said.

He said anyone wishing to vote absentee by mail may call the county clerk’s office at 815925-7129 and request an application. An official ballot will be mailed after the correctly completed, signed application is returned to the county clerk’s office.

Kuhn said the last day for the county clerk’s office to mail an absentee ballot is Nov. 1.

“Therefore, correctly completed applications for absentee ballots must be received no later than Nov. 1,” Kuhn said.

Anyone wishing to vote absentee in person may stop by the county clerk’s office between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. The county clerk’s office will also be open on Saturday, Nov. 3, for in-person absentee voting from 9 a.m. to noon.

The last day for in-person absentee voting is Monday, Nov. 5, during regular office hours.

Lays out plan for new term if re-elected

Ahead: Dady interview An interview with Republican U.S. Rep. Adam Kinzinger’s Democratic challenger, Sara Dady of Rockford, will appear in next week’s Putnam County Record.

BY BRENT BADER Shaw Media OTTAWA — U.S. Re p. Adam Kinzinger has served the 16th Congressional District since 2013 and has been in Congress since 2011, and in that time, he’s learned to not be afraid to shift his perspective on issues.

In a recent meeting with Shaw Media editors at The Times office, Kinzinger, R-Channahon, said specifically he’s “evolved” his thinking on tariffs, and while he doesn’t support all tariffs, he does see value in some of them.

“I initially recoiled at the thought of any version of a tariff anywhere,” said Kinzinger, who met with the Shaw Media Editorial Board on Sept. 18 in Ottawa.

“I’m a free trader, and I’m a believer that American products on the market can crush anyone else’s.”

Kinzinger faces a challenge this fall from Sara Dady, a Rockford Democrat and immigration lawyer. Both are vying to represent the 16th Congressional District, which includes Bureau, Putnam and LaSalle counties. President Donald Trump carried the district by more than 17 points in 2016.

Kinzinger said he originally opposed all tariffs considered by the Trump administration, and although he still opposes some, such as on steel and aluminum from places such as Canada and Europe, he now sees the need for using them to put the squeeze on China.

Kinzinger said throughout his visits in the district, he’s heard about American businesses struggling over targeted tariffs from China designed to drive prices down, ploys to steal technology used in manufacturing products there, and other government interference.

“That’s unfair, and right now I think our best way to push back against that is through using our economic system, especially because the Chinese system is very tenuous,” Kinzinger said.

“So, while I’m nervous about it and frankly, I don’t know if I’d do the additional $200 billion in sanctions, I certainly hope the president is successful.”

Health care reform K i n z i n g e r s a i d h e a l t h c a re reform was one area where partisan politics were impeding progress in Washington. Kinzinger voted to replace the Affordable Health Care Act with The American Health Care Act, which missed approval by one vote, with all Democrats opposed.

He said his hope is that Congress will work toward making health care accessible and affordable for the poor, middle class and wealthy.

“I don’t think your pocketbook should be a determination whether you live or die,” Kinzinger said.

He hopes to do this by working to bring costs down and finding a way to encourage transparency in billing so consumers recognize cost differences from hospitals and clinics as well as generate competition between institutions.

He added he would like to see protections for those with pre-existing conditions included, as well as penalties for people who try to game the system by picking up insurance when they’re sick, and dropping it when they’re not.

Kinzinger admitted that it’s difficult to bridge the gap between Republicans and Democrats when President Trump continues to divide the parties with Twitter attacks.

“I think if you talk with most Republicans, they’re conflicted with policies we agree with and those we don’t,” Kinzinger said.

“So, I’ll just continue to be a counter example.”

Kinzinger rejected the criticism that he’s not easily accessible to or engaged with his constituents, calling it this line of attack a key maneuver in the Democrats’ “playbook.”

He said he had two town halls last year, but was criticized for them not taking place in the right venue or setting. He said he’s open to “legitimate” town hall discussions and public forums that discuss issues, such as human trafficking, but not those created by the Democratic Party designed to favor one party over the issues.

He added he’s supportive of President’s Trump actions to this point and credits him with the recent economic upswing, but he is reminded a new generation of Republicans will be quick to succeed him.

“I hope he’s president for another six years, but he’ll be done at some point, and there will be this generation that’s my age and younger that’s going to define what the Republican Party looks like,” Kinzinger said.

“Whether I’ll be in this job or not by then, to the extent that I can have a piece of that conversation now is essential,” he added.

Kinzinger said one of the larger frustrations in his position is he is unable to direct spending to specific issues in the district.

The spending, known as earmark spending, was temporarily banned in February 2011, which prohibits lawmakers from using congressional funds for specific local projects.

Kinzinger said he hopes to restore earmarks in a new, reformed system that prevents abuse so he can divert money to his district.

Kinzinger said grassroots campaigns are vital to combating the opioid epidemic, but noted there are some potential regulatory aids that can assist.

He said treatment facilities are sometimes limited in the number of beds they can have by federal regulations imposed decades ago meant to prevent people from becoming institutionalized; these regulations should be revised, he said.

He said alternatives to opioid painkillers should be used, including medical marijuana, which he supports. He added that he supported a measure allowing Veterans Administration doctors to prescribe medical marijuana in states that allow it.

Kinzinger also said for some, it’s up to others to be aware if they have prescription medications within reach of children, as some pick up the habit through finding pain

Kinzinger said he thinks wind power is important but understands the frustrations of some that say they’ve become too prevalent.

He said the government should encourage a level playing field and occasionally should step in to give advantages to new technologies to help get them off the ground and be able to rely on them. Now, wind power provides a great deal of power, and the gover nment is phasing out its tax credits to farms.

“I think wind power is important.

I share the frustrations of a lot of people that when I drive or fly my little plane and I see nothing but wind turbines, it can be a bit of an eyesore, so it’s a give and take, but I think the federal government helps to stand up technologies, but it needs to walk away, too, and that’s the role we’re playing right now,” he said.

Boy Scout Troop 1093 receives $2,500 grant GRANVILLE — Boy Scout Troop 1093 recently received $2,500 through America’s Farmers Grow Communities Monsanto Funds to replace camping equipment and supplies.

The Granville Masonic Lodge 1093 is the charter organization of Troop 1093. The Illinois Masonic Children’s Assistance Program assisted the troop in receiving the grant.

Communities in Putnam County are making plans for Halloween.

The village of Granville will begin its Halloween celebrations with a parade line-up at Al Cioni Ford at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 31. Following the parade, there will be free hot dogs, chili and drinks at Hopkins Park, as well as pumpkin coloring and a picture station. Trick-or-treating hours

will be from 6 to 8 p.m.

The village of Hennepin will begin their Halloween celebration at the Hennepin Fire Department at 5 p.m. on Oct. 31 with hot dogs, drinks and other refreshments.

Trick-or-treating will be from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.

The village of Magnolia will be hosting a Halloween party at its fire department from 4:30 to 7 p.m., and trick-or-treating will be from 5 to 7 p.m. on Oct. 31.

McNabb’s time for trick-ortreating will run from 6 to 8 p.m. on Oct. 31.

GRANVILLE — Brian Thomas Shaw, 48, of Granville passed away Thursday, Oct. 18, 2018, at his residence.

Brian was born Aug. 9, 1970, in Spring Valley to Thomas and Nancy (Hartman) Shaw. He married Kim Picchi on Aug. 23, 2014, in Granville.

He graduated from Putnam County High School.

Brian was team leader at Unytite in Peru. He also enjoyed fishing, golfing and being with his family.

Survivors include his wife, Kim Shaw of Granville; two sons, Bryce and Brayden Shaw of Princeton; one daughter, Hailey Shaw of Princeton; one stepson, Colin Finan of Minooka; his parents, Tom and Nancy Shaw of Granville; his mother-in-law, Rebecca Picchi of Ottawa; and two sisters, Brenda (Dan) Wrobelski of Oglesby and Rhonda (Joe) Bezely of Ladd.

He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents and his maternal grandparents, and an aunt and an uncle.

A celebration of life was held Sunday, Oct. 21, at the Dysart-Cofoid Funeral Chapel in Granville. Cremation rites have been accorded.

Annual Food for Fines library fine amnesty benefits area food pantries Program will run Nov. 5 to 17 Food for Fines returns this year to area libraries, forgiving fines while benefiting local food pantries. Eight area libraries (Peru, LaSalle, Richard A. Mautino, Putnam County, Graves-Hume, Princeton, Oglesby and Jacobs Library) are sponsoring their annual “Food for Fines” amnesty program benefiting area food pantries.

From Nov. 5 to Nov. 17, these libraries will accept canned or boxed non-perishable food donations as payment of overdue fines. As in past years, the collected donations go to area food pantries, helping restock shelves in November and December.

This is the ninth year area libraries have cooperated benefiting area food pantries and forgiving fines.

Each donated food item pays $1 in library overdue fines up to a maximum of 25 items to pay $25 per overdue library account. Food items must be presented at the libraries’ circulation desks.

Don’t have any overdue fines? Feel free to bring your donations to a participating library. The libraries are happy to deliver it to area food pantries.

Donated food is not accepted for lost or damaged

books, replacement of cards or interlibrary loan fees.

Because of food safety concerns, the pantries request items be in their original packaging; damaged packages, outdated food or glass containers are not acceptable. Suggested food items include canned fruits and vegetables, soups, cereals, pasta mixes, and canned meats.

MORRIS — Dozens of high school students from across the 38th Senate District participated in a unique, hands-on experience in public policy, state government, and leadership as members of state Sen. Sue Rezin’s Youth Advisory Council on Oct. 10.

“The enthusiasm, knowledge, and engagement from the students on my Youth Advisory Council is incredibly refreshing,” Rezin said.

“We’ll need positive, uplifting, and bright leaders, whether it’s in government, public policy, the classroom, everywhere. The students of this generation are our future leaders, and I can tell you the future looks bright after spending the day with these students. I hope my Youth Advisory Council taught them more about government and leadership, and reinforces their drive to achieve their dreams.”

Rezin hosted the all-day event with students who’d been selected by their principals and teachers.

Youth attended from Coal City High School, Gardner-South Wilmington High School, LaSalle-Peru Township High School, Morris Community High School, Newark Community High School, Ottawa Township High School, Putnam County High School, Seneca Township High School, Serena High School, and Wilmington High School.

They all expressed an interest in either working in government, public policy or learning more about those subjects.

Rezin spoke about her career, how Illinois government works, shared her experiences at the Statehouse, and explained how public policy can shape the student’s everyday lives.

DAR district direstor visits Henry chapter HENRY — District II Director Patricia Holcomb of the Illinois State Organization NSDAR presented the program at the Oct. 6 meeting of the Chief Senachwine Chapter at the Meeting Place in Henry.

Holcomb’s program, “From Then to Now,” traced the growth of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution from its founding in 1890 through its ownership of the National Headquarters in Washington, D.C., and on to detailing the many accomplished women who have been members. The headquarters building occupies a full block not far from the Washington Monument – the largest amount of real estate owned by women in the world.

The meeting was called to order after Regent Nancy Gillfillan’s native American flute call signaled the start of the gathering. Seven of the 10 new members were present for the welcome ceremony, conducted by Registrar Sharon Bittner and Chaplain Diana Williamson. Gift bags of DAR materials were presented.

A brief report was given by Gillfillan on attendance at DAR Days in Springfield. Updated materials were distributed to chairmen.

The NSDAR National Day of Service was Oct. 11. Members met at the grave of Real DAR Daughter Clarissa McManners to clean the gravestone, lay a wreath and hold a brief ceremony. Oct. 13 was the District II Day of Service at the LaSalle Veterans Home. Members donated items and played bingo with the veterans. The District II fall meeting is scheduled for Oct. 27 in Rockford.

Members are asked to notify Gillfillan of their desire to attend.

Constitution Week Chairman Shelia Schrowang was recognized for her excellent news coverage of Constitution Week and her displays at the Henry Public Library and the Henry Grade School. Over half of the members rang bells, joining thousands of other DAR members across the U.S. in remembering the importance of our Constitution. Several area churches also participated by ringing their bells.

The members voted to hold a re-dedication ceremony at the gravesite for Real Daughter Clarissa McManners in May. A Real Daughter is a woman whose father was a Revolutionary War patriot and who also was a DAR chapter member.

The audience is taken along on young Ralphie Parker’s quest for the “Holy Grail of Christmas gifts,” which is of none other than the “official Red Ryder, carbine action, 200-shot, range model air rifle, with a compass in the stock and this thing that tells time!” Despite being rebuffed consistently throughout his journey, Ralphie continues to devise a new plan that will bring him and his coveted BB gun together once and for all this Christmas.

Everyone will be sure to enjoy this versatile score that includes gentle ballads, as well as several full ensemble show stoppers, such as “Ralphie to the Rescue,” “A Major Award,” “Sticky Situation,” “Up On Santa’s Lap,” “Somewhere Hovering Over Indiana” and the undeniable, “You’ll Shoot Your Eye Out.” Don’t worry, they promise all of the classic, iconic scenes haven’t been forsaken. Those dreadful bullies, Farkus and Dill, are still alive and well. Mother will certainly insist on Randy getting into his snowsuit and Ralphie donning the infamous bunny suit. Putnam County Rotary will host a Bunco fundraiser on Oct. 26 GRANVILLE — The Putnam County Rotary Club will host a Bunco fundraiser on Friday, Oct. 26, at Putnam County High School in Granville. The fundraiser will benefit the high school’s Unified P.E. Program.

The event is open to the public.

The doors will open at 5 p.m. and Bunco starts at 6 p.m. The $10 ticket price includes entry into the event.

Food and beverages are included in the ticket price.

Unified PE pairs special needs students with general ed students.

The general ed students help their partners develop and improve basic skills based on their specific needs. They also help prepare the students for Special Olympics competitions. The students are in need of uniforms and specialized equipment.

Mr. and Mrs. Don Brandstatter of Chillicothe will celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary with a family vacation in August.

Don Brandstatter and Nancy Naumann were married Oct. 25, 1958, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in rural Peru.

They are the parents of two sons, Dave (Kay) Brandstatter of Peoria and Jeff (Kelly) Brandstatter of Chillicothe, and two daughters, Margy (George) Mattern of Magnolia and Lisa (Scott) Palm of Varna. They also have 11 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Don was employed by, and retired from, LTV Steel.

Nancy was employed by, and retired from, OSF HealthCare.

PERU — Oct. 31 is the last day to complete Illinois Valley Community Hospital’s online health needs survey, a key part of the community health needs assessment IVCH conducts every three years.

The link to the survey can be found at the top of the home page of the hospital’s website,www.ivch.org.

The link will remain live until the end of October.

Paper copies of the survey and postage-paid envelopes in which to return them are available at IVCH and at IVCH Medical Group offices in LaSalle, Peru, Oglesby, Utica, Princeton and Streator.

All families who wish to receive a basket must complete and return the request form or call Gayle Reno at 815866-6484 by November 12th. Please include a specific wish list for your children including what type and names of books, music, activities, and toys they like. Forms are also available at the Food Pantry for clients who receive food on Saturday mornings. Please do not fill out duplicate forms.

Regular clients of the Food Pantry will not receive a basket unless they complete a form. Baskets will be delivered only to those who are shutin or have no access to transportation.

Deliveries will be made the morning of December 15th, as well.

Conductor and cellist Chris Wild’s performances have been lauded as “insatiable” (New York Times), resulting from his enthusiastic pursuit of musical connections. Currently based in Chicago, he is conductor for the Andrews University Symphony Orchestra (Michigan), conductor and co-director of Après L’Histoire, and cellist for Ensemble Dal Niente, a contemporary music collective noted for its “bracing sonic adventures” (Chicago Tribune).

Chris’s recent and upcoming activities include performances at Walt Disney Concert Hall, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Art Institute of Chicago, and the Palacio de Bellas Artes (Mexico), as well as leading staged productions of L’histoire du soldat at the Poetry Foundation, the Arts Club of Chicago, and Northwestern University with Après L’Histoire. Chris has led concerts, readings, and educational concerts with the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra, Oregon Bach Festival Orchestra and Chorus, Windsor Symphony Orchestra, and Camerata Antonio Soler (Spain), among others.

Wild began his cello studies at the age of 5 in British Columbia, Canada, where he would later win first place in the strings category of the Canadian Music Competition. He

moved stateside to attend the University of Michigan, where he studied with Erling Blöndal Bengtsson and Richard Aaron and won first place in the school’s Concerto Competition. His solo performances have included classical and contemporary repertoire with the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra, Third Coast Percussion, Experimental Sound Studio SWR (Germany), and University of Michigan Philharmonia Orchestra. His debut cello album, “Abhanden,” is described

by New Music Box as “a virtuosic tour-de-force for solo cello …

Wild’s approach to the material is soaring, lyrical and bold … confirms that Wild is not only an exciting performer to watch, but also a wise programmer and collaborator.”

Wild’s work as a conductor grew out of a love for teaching that has included work with orchestras, chamber ensembles and private cello students of all ages. Upon moving to Illinois, he directed the public-school orchestra program in DeKalb, doubling its enrollment, winning multiple awards, moving into new facilities, and adding the DeKalb High School String Band, for which he arranged dozens of songs.

Recently, he has begun sharing his love for music in the YouTube video series Great Moments in Orchestral History and through teaching in the music department at Andrews University. Chris’s conducting mentors include Victor Yampolsky (Northwestern University), Lucia Matos (Northern Illinois University), Cliff Colnot (Civic Orchestra of Chicago), Randal Swiggum (Comprehensive Musicianship through Performance), and Robert Culver (University of Michigan).

Roether, soprano, is a native and current resident of Peru. She holds a Bachelor of Music Education, specializing in voice, from

Illinois Wesleyan University, where she studied under Bridget Rose. After five years of teaching music to students from pre-K to high school, she made the decision to return Jenilyn to college and pursue a Roether, Master of Music from soprano Northern Illinois University, specializing in music education and voice. While there, she studied voice with Myron Myers and conducting with Eric Johnson. Roether currently sings with Cor Cantiamo, a professional choir directed by Eric Johnson and based in DeKalb. She has been fortunate to record four CDs with Cor Cantiamo. She has also sung with Canterbury Singers, a professional choir based in Dixon, Illinois. She is voice instructor and director of Choral Activities at Illinois Valley Community College. She also directs the Illinois Valley Youth Choir, the very choir in which she began her singing career as a young child.

National Take-Back Day will be Saturday CPASA announces local prescription drug drop-off sites On Saturday, Oct. 27, National Take-Back Day, Community Partners Against Substance Abuse Coalition (CPASA), Princeton Police Department, Tiskilwa Police Department, Spring Valley Police Department, and the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) will give the public another opportunity to prevent pill abuse and theft by ridding their homes of potentially dangerous expired, unused, and unwanted prescription drugs.

Medications will be accepted for disposal at the following locations in Bureau County: the Princeton Police Department at 605 Elm Place, Princeton from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.; the Tiskilwa Fire Department at 135 N. High St, Tiskilwa from 9 a.m. to noon; and at the Spring Valley Police Department at 215 N. Greenwood St., Spring Valley from 9 a.m. to noon.

The service is free and anonymous with no questions asked.

The last Take-Back Day brought in almost 1 million pounds of unused or expired prescription medication nationwide. This is the largest amount collected since the program began in 2010. This brings the total amount of prescription drugs collected by the DEA since the fall of 2010 to 9,964,714 pounds, or 4,982 tons.

This initiative addresses a vital public safety and public health issue. Medicines languishing in home cabinets are highly susceptible to diversion, misuse and abuse.

Rates of prescription drug abuse in the U.S. are alarmingly high, as are the number of accidental poisonings and overdoses because of these drugs. Studies show a majority of abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends, including from the home medicine cabinet.

In addition, Americans are now advised that their usual methods for disposing of unused medicines — flushing them down the toilet or throwing them in the trash — both pose potential safety and health hazards.

Medications accepted are prescription medications, all over-the-counter medications, pet medications, vitamins and supplements, medicated ointments and creams, homeopathic remedies and suppositories.

CPASA also has the ongoing Prescription Drug Disposal Program called P2D2 with locations in Bureau and Putnam counties at the Princeton Police Department, the Bureau County Sheriff ’s Office and Jail, the Spring Valley Police Department, the Putnam County Sheriff ’s Department, the Granville Police Department, the Ladd Police Department, and the Walnut Police Department.

Trustees say yes to cybersecurity associate’s degree Program scheduled to start in fall of 2019 OGLESBY — Illinois Valley Community College entered the world of cybersecurity Oct. 11.

Trustees approved a cybersecurity Associate in Applied Science degree and certificate to begin in fall 2019.

Among eight new courses in the 60-credit AAS are digital forensics, cybersecurity scripting, computer ethics and ethical hacking.

A recent survey administered through district chambers revealed dozens of local business and industry managers desire employees with cybersecurity knowledge and skills.

The curriculum was crafted in collaboration with local information technology leaders and the college’s cybersecurity and computer networking advisory committees. The certificate is for IT professionals looking to strengthen their skillset in this area.

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) estimates there are more than 200,000 cybersecurity job openings nationally and predicts employment growth of 37 percent over the next decade.

In other business, tr ustees approved the $50,750 bid of S&K Excavating & Trucking of Newark to take down and remove the old

dairy barn south of campus. S&K, the lowest of three bidders on the project, is expected to begin demolition this fall.

The contractor will work on IVCC’s behalf to salvage any usable lumber that might be incorporated into the new facility.

Last month, the college announced it would receive nearly $165,000 in state funding for demolition of the barn and construction of an agriculture storage facility. The project, which would require at least $60,000 from the college, will replace the 1940s-era barn with a building to house ag program implements.

At the beginning of the meeting, state Sen. Sue Rezin received an “Outstanding Legislator Award” from Illinois Community College Trustees Association Executive Director Mike Monaghan for her continued support of IVCC and all Illinois community colleges. State Sen. Pat McGuire and state Reps.

Kelly Burke and Chad Hayes also received the award in 2018.

The board approved: • Seeking bids for patient simulators for the nursing program.

The Laerdal Simulation Manikins, which will be paid for by a $50,000 donation from 1951 IVCC alumnus Ralph Scriba, allow students to practice core skills, problem-solve and experience highly-realistic

patient encounters.

• High deductible health planhealth savings account contributions for full-time employees. On Jan. 1, 2019, IVCC will contribute $2,500 for individual coverage and $5,000 for “employee plus one” and family coverage.

• Adding computer networking to the dual credit agreement with Starved Rock Associates for Vocational & Technical Education (SRAVTE). The agreement already covers automotive, business/ computers/keyboarding, computer-aided engineering and design, early childhood education, graphic design, nursing, manufacturing and welding. SRAVTE serves the Area Career Center and DePue, Hall, LaMoille, LaSalle-Peru, Mendota, Ottawa, Princeton, Putnam County, Seneca and Streator high schools.

• Purchase of Basic Rigger and Signal Person training classes for $17,000 for the Continuing Education Center. The cost will be recovered by fees charged to students in a Crane Inspection and Certification Bureau course.

• Preparation of the tentative 2018 tax levy to be presented at the Nov. 8 meeting and finalized at the Dec. 13 meeting.

• Continuation of the cash farm lease with Luke Holly for 149 acres of college farmland at $308 per acre or $45,929 a year.

• The annual $10,000 local match

to support Project Success, the federally-funded program serving 160 low-income, first-generation and disabled students annually. Specifically, IVCC’s match helps low-income students offset tuition, books and supplies.

• An updated contract with the Joint Apprenticeship Training Committee (JATC) Local 176 for an AAS in electrical construction for individuals completing the electrician’s apprenticeship.

• A certificate in basic computer-aided design. The program’s advisory committee expressed a need for employees with basic CAD knowledge to supplement employees with CAD expertise. The 12-credit, two-semester certificate has four courses.

• Reimbursement of $368 in travel expenses for board chair Jane Goetz to attend an ICCTA meeting Sept.

14-15 in Peoria.

The board learned: • A free, mini food pantry cabinet has been placed off the main lobby to help low-income students get through the day. The initiative, which involves stocking the cabinet with snacks, began after a local newspaper highlighted hunger and homelessness among area college students. Illinois Valley Food Pantry provided the cabinet’s initial stock and numerous employees and students helped launch the project.

PERU — Putnam County’s Michael Dzierzynski qualified for this Saturday’s IHSA Class A Sectional in Oregon, Ill.., as an individual after placing eighth in Saturday’s St. Bede 1A Regional.

The senior ran the course in 19:14.84 and was one of five individual racers to qualify. The seven teams who qualified for the sectional were Seneca, Stark County, Hall, Princeton, St. Bede, Fieldcrest and Mendota.

Other Putnam County boys running were Matt Haage (60th in 22:14.22), Nick Mattern (67th in 22:52.32), Joey Twardowski (71st in 23:07.17) and Wes Grimshaw (83rd in 24:34.29). Putnam County girls running were Annie Sabotta (45th in 26:38.14) and Becky Ramey (65th in 32:11.32).

Complete forms soon to get Christmas baskets GRANVILLE — The Putnam County Food Pantry, in cooperation with local schools, organizations and churches, will again be preparing Christmas baskets for Putnam County families in need.

The baskets will contain the makings of a Christmas breakfast and dinner, toys and clothes for the children, and gifts for senior citizens.

The baskets will be ready for pickup between

8 and 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 15 in Bonnuchi Hall at the Granville United Church of Christ, upstairs from the food pantry.

All families wishing to receive a basket must complete and return the request form or call Gayle Reno at 815-866-6484 by Sunday, Nov. 11.

Participants are asked to please include a specific wish list for your children, including what type and names of books, music, activities, toys, or jewelry they like, and specify if

their ears are pierced or not.

Forms are also available at the food pantry for clients who receive food on Saturday mornings. Please don’t fill out duplicate forms.

Regular clients of the pantry won’t receive a basket unless a form is completed.

Baskets will be delivered only to those who are shut-in or have no access to transportation. Deliveries will be made the morning of Dec. 15.
