Car enthusiasts help children at the Illinois Valley Toy Run

‘When it’s for the kids, why not?’ TOM COLLINS

tcollins@shawmedia.com Looking for a way to help this holiday season? Consider donating to the Illinois Valley Toy Run. Though the drive-in auto show was Sunday in Princeton, organizers still are accepting toys for needy kids. And the need is expected to be high this Christmas. Scott Bickett, of rural Princeton, is one of the organizers of the 17th annual Toy Run, which outgrew three venues before filling Soldiers and Sailors Park in downtown Princeton. Bickett said he was delighted with Sunday’s early turnout — “This is probably going to be our biggest show ever” — but was especially grateful for the rapidly-mounting pile of toys brought to assist families. “Four years ago it wasn’t quite so bad, but we’re hearing there are people who haven’t been working or they’ve working a lot less,” he said. “They’re not going to have hardly anything under the tree for their families, and this is a way of helping them out.” Homeless shelters and food pantries reported a worrisome increase in appeals for shelter and food across Starved Rock Country, a trend that some advocates correctly predicted after the novel coronavirus wreaked havoc on the local jobs market. The demand for donated toys also is climbing, which spurred local gear-

Car enthusiasts are collecting holiday gifts ahead of what’s expected to be a lean Christmas for the poor. heads into action. While the toys were ticketed mostly for the Red Cross and the Christmas for Kids Foundation, proceeds also were being raised to provide Thanksgiving dinners for families in La Salle, Bureau, Putnam and Marshall counties. The chance to give while also catching a glimpse of the world’s best-ever cars proved irresistible to Chuck Reynolds of Peru. “That’s the main purpose is to help the kids,” Reynolds said. “When you

help somebody out you feel good about it.” Kendra King of Peru and son Bryce Booker helped collect donated toys that, by mid-morning Sunday, had already filled the bottom of a 6-foot Christmas tree. “We want to get as many toys to kids as possible,” King said. “It’s going to be hard to hard enough with everything stuck on the ships.

See TOY RUN, Page 4 The Illinois Valley Toy Run, held Sunday in Princeton, drew plenty of holiday gift donations as well as some rare autos. Aaron Gonzalez of Mazon supported needy families by rolling up in a longed-for 1954 Pontiac Chieftain. “I’d been searching high and low,” Gonzalez said. “I finally found one.”

• TOY RUN Continued from Page 2 With the holidays fast-approaching – and the number of balmy days dwindling – cars roared in from across Illinois and three neighboring states. Besides the chance to enjoy the show and help the needy, a 50-50 raffle was held to fund a scholarship for the automotive class at La Salle-Peru Township High School. Aaron Gonzalez of Mazon was one of the first to roll in to Soldiers and Sailors Park behind the wheel of a longed-for 1954 Pontiac Chieftain. “I’d been searching high and low,” Gonzalez said. “I finally found one.” What really made his Gonzalez’s day was being able to lend a giving hand while also flashing the chrome. The Toy Run had “a good set-up” where he and other classic car enthusiasts could provide Christmas presents and holiday meals. A few feet away, Ray Clausen of Ottawa greeted a few onlookers who came to admire his aqua-colored 1957 Bel-Air. Clausen said he, too, couldn’t pass up the opportunity to hit the road on a crisp fall day while also supporting the less fortunate. “When it’s for the kids, why not?” Clausen said. And it’s not too late to give. Bickett said he or another volunteer will gladly collect donated toys. Calling 815-875-1901 or 815-883-1901 to arrange pickup.

SPRING VALLEY

GRANVILLE

The fifth annual Toy Run, founded by Drew Faletti of Spring Valley, was held Oct. 3 and raised $15,000 for local charities supporting children in Bureau, Putnam and LaSalle counties. Volunteers from the three-county region get area businesses to be supporters of the event each year. The volunteers help with numerous raffles throughout the year to raise funds for the event. There are a few small fundraisers during late spring and summer. New volunteers are always welcome. The organization wishes to thank those businesses and people that donated to the cause. The goal has always been to raise funds and receive toys for less fortunate children and people in the three county area. Funds are now being dispersed to local charities for children from this year’s event. To find out more information about Photo contributed the Toy Run, visit its Facebook page. Since its inception, the the group has grown in size, originally practicing in a garage and slowly moved to several larger locations. These ladies are the most creative when it comes to their outfits, head pieces and makeup. Practice beings in August and new dancers are always welcome.

BUREAU AND PUTNAM COUNTIES

BPART looking for input via survey

Survey period concludes Nov. 12 To continue providing the highest quality of transportation services, Bureau-Putnam Area Rural Transit (BPART) is asking for your input via a needs survey. Feedback is appreciated as the program continues to seek ways to enhance the services that are being

offered. The survey period will conclude on Nov. 12. The survey consists of 13 brief multiple-choice questions, and there is space for any comments. The time to complete the survey is estimated to be less than 5 minutes. “Your opinion matters,” stated Amber Biddix, director of transportation at Gateway Services. “Results from our 2018 survey concluded that riders wanted later hours and Saturday service so we were able to make those changes, thanks to your input.”

Copies of the survey are available at the BPART office located at 526 Bureau Valley Parkway in Princeton and various locations throughout Bureau and Putnam counties. Other transportation partners will also have copies as well: Gateway Services, Bureau County Senior Center, St. Margaret’s Health – Spring Valley and Putnam County Community Center. Respondents can also scan the QR code to access it or visit https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/F6HJVZ7.

Additionally, some BPART buses will have tablets available to use during their trips. Responses are completely confidential. Results will be tallied and provided to the public upon completion. BPART transportation is available to the public, provided that the trip begins or ends in Bureau or Putnam County. For more information on the service or fares, visit the website at www.ridebpart.org or contact the BPART office at 877-874-8813.

Putnam County Sheriff Kevin Doyle will not seek seventh term

PUTNAM COUNTY — Putnam County Sheriff Kevin Doyle has announced he will not seek a seventh term. He released the following statement: “It has been an honor and a privilege to serve as Sheriff of Putnam County. After careful consideration, I have decided not to seek re-election after this term ends in November 2022. At the end of this term, I will have 30 years in Law Enforcement and 24 years as Sheriff. In the PC Sheriff beginning, retirement was such a distant objective, but it Kevin Doyle is now time to turn it into reality and begin a new chapter in my life. A career in law enforcement is a very tough and demanding profession, and I have been blessed with a great staff throughout my career as Sheriff. The staff at PCSO are some of the most committed and dedicated individuals I have ever worked alongside, and that has been a true honor. They have endured some of the best and worst times, and they continue to show up and do the work they do for the people of this community. My career in law enforcement and being Sheriff has allowed me to cross paths with so many tremendous people. I have been honored and blessed with an opportunity to meet and network with people that I would have otherwise never gotten the chance to meet. Many lifelong friendships have been established and I am forever grateful for what my career has given me in return. I am truly blessed to have had great support from my family, friends, and the citizens of Putnam County. I appreciated the faith the community has put in me, and I would like to thank the great citizens of Putnam County for allowing me to serve as your Sheriff. It has been a true pleasure.”

‘Grunella’ cast announced for Illinois Valley Community College production

Production will be recorded, streamed the week of Nov. 22 The cast for Illinois Valley Community College’s theatre department’s family-friendly fall production of “Grunella, The Story Stealer,” written and directed by speech and theatre instructor Dr. David Kuester, has been announced. Cast includes Madeleine Hunter as Grunella, Macy Anderson as Enchantra, Zoe Starkey as Snow White, Reid Rynke as Winston, David Zuniga as Prince Charming, Emma Elmore as Cinderella and Rattryna Yim as the Magic Mirror. Crew members are production assistant Ashley Hurst, Maryanna Amaral and Andrew Paden. To mitigate COVID and for the safety of the audience and cast, the production will be recorded and streamed the week of Nov. 22 on the IVCC Fine Arts YouTube channel. “This is a fast-moving story involving many of the familiar fairy tale characters,” Kuester said. “They are put in situ-

ations where they have to save the stories of Story Land from the nasty plot of a naughty witch.” Classic improvisation tools are used in the workshopping and story-building process of the script. “It is my hope,” Kuester said, “as well as Grunella’s, that this story further enhances the classic fairy tales and gives young and old a new window into the magical world we all grew up with.” In the play, Enchantra, magical keeper of the fairy tales, is hosting a production of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. All starts well before strange things start happening: characters are missing and others are quickly losing their memory. Grunella, a minor witch in Story Land, bursts in and announces her plan to take control of all princess stories and star in all of them. She has cast a spell to erase everyone’s memory, leaving only herself in every leading role. The cast works hard to counter her spell. To do this, they must, with the help of audience members, act out story lines and action to restore Snow White’s and later Cinderella’s memory and protect all princesses of Story Land.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Is aerial spraying possible with wind turbines? A: Yes. There are thousands of wind turbines in Illinois and farmers continue to spray their crops.

Q: How will the turbines impact land use? A: A turbine and its access road combined take up less than an acre of property -- you can use your property as you have always done in the past.

Q: Are the turbines a safety hazard? A: A team of locally hired, highly-skilled wind technicians monitor the turbines on a daily basis to ensure everyone's safety.

Q: Do wind turbines create sound? A: Turbines create sound, but by the time it reaches a residence it is no more noticeable than the humming of a refrigerator.

Q: Will I experience flicker? A: Turbines are placed in the middle of farm fields and they are sited to minimize flicker.

Q: Who removes the wind turbines at the end of the project? A: A bond will be in place to guarantee funds are available to remove (decommission) the wind farm at the end of its life cycle.

Q: How does construction impact drainage tile? A: The locations of drainage tile lines will be identified before construction and wind facilities will be installed to minimize impact. The company will pay to locate, move and repair any impacted tile lines.

IVCC ag program receives $25,000 grant

Since 2019, IVCC has received three Compeer Financial grants totaling $40,000 OGLESBY — Illinois Valley Community College’s agriculture program recently received a $25,000 grant from Compeer Financial’s Agriculture and Rural Initiative for equipment, technology, student engagement and retention. IVCC President Jerry Corcoran said, “Thanks to the leadership shown by Compeer Financial, students can rest assured they’ll have a first-class experience when choosing IVCC agriculture as their program of study.” Compeer representative Karen Schieler said, “Developing our agriculture workforce is a priority to our client-owners. Supporting vocational agricultural education at community and technical colleges is a focus of our Agriculture and Rural Initiative. “Community colleges like IVCC are providing the essential hands-on educational experiences that excite young people to pursue their passion and

careers in agriculture,” Schieler said. The grant provides equipment for crops, soils and precision ag labs. Specifically, the first $10,000 installment will purchase a weather station, chlorophyll meter, stereo microscopes and soil probes, compaction testers and infrared thermometers. The remaining $15,000, coming in $7,500 increments in 2022 and 2023, supports efforts to grow student participation in the IVCC Ag Club, the state student ag organization and the LaSalle County Farm Bureau Young Leaders/Collegiate Farm Bureau. In addition, it will provide funding for students and instructors to attend the annual North American Colleges and Teachers of Agriculture (NACTA) Student Judging Conference. “Our goal is to engage students in our club and provide the opportunity for them to participate at the state and national level,” IVCC ag instructor Caitlinn Hubbell said. Instructor Willard Mott added, “Students are often motivated to enter the ag industry because of the people they meet along the way and the experiences they have in high school and college.”

Corcoran credited Mott and Hubbell for the program’s growing enrollment and for helping place graduates in good jobs. Ag enrollment has grown from nine students in Fall 2016 to 56 this fall and ag scholarships have increased from $3,000 to more than $70,000. Mott said, “In terms of job placement, all our graduates have found employment or transferred to a university to pursue a bachelor’s degree.” Ag graduates are currently working for U.S. Department of Agriculture-Natural Resource Conservation Service (USDA-NRCS), Troy Grove

Elevator, Northern Partners Cooperative, Ag View FS, and Wilbur-Ellis, among others. “I am proud of the impact IVCC agriculture is making in the district,” Corcoran said. Since December 2019, IVCC’s ag department has received three Compeer Financial grants totaling $40,000, including $10,000 for biotechnology equipment in June 2020, in addition to annual scholarship support. Over the next five years, Compeer Financial is providing two, $1,250 scholarships each year to students studying agriculture at IVCC.

Gary Roberts will begin his tenure Jan. 1 as Illinois Valley Community College Vice President for Academic Affairs following his board appointment Oct. 14. Trustees approved the hiring of Roberts, dean of arts and sciences at Lake Michigan College in Benton Harbor, Mich., to succeed Deborah Anderson, who is retiring at the end of the semester. IVCC President Jerry Corcoran said Roberts brings an “excellent combination of teaching and administrative experience including accreditation, articulation and transfer and assessment of student learning. “Dr. Roberts’ skills match perfectly what we need,” Corcoran said. “And from a succession-planning standpoint, with the team we have in place, I am confident IVCC is in good shape for years to come.” Roberts earned the Ph.D. and master’s in political science from Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo, a bachelor’s from WMU and an associate’s from Lake Michigan College. In other business, trustees approved: • Seeking proposals for a Learning Management System to be implemented in July 2023 when the contract with Blackboard expires. • Preparation of the 2021 tax levy for tentative approval Nov. 18 and final approval Dec. 9. • Contracting with Robbins Schwartz to represent IVCC in a property tax complaint filed by Kohl’s of Peru. Kohl’s is requesting its EAV be reduced from over $4.2 million to $2.7 million. If the complaint is approved, IVCC would refund Kohl’s $5,670. Robbins Schwartz is representing IVCC, L-P High School, Dimmick School and

potentially other taxing bodies for $7,680 collectively. • A settlement agreement in the Putnam County property tax appeal by Vistra’s Hennepin Power Station. Gary Roberts The plant’s EAV will decrease from $3.3 million in 2021 to $2.5 million in 2022. • High deductible health savings account contributions for full-time employees. In January, IVCC will contribute $2,500 for individual coverage and $5,000 for “employee plus one” and family coverage. • The annual $10,000 local match to support Project Success, the federally-funded program serving approximately 165 low-income, first-generation and students with disabilities. Specifically, the match helps low-income students offset costs for tuition, books and supplies. • The bid of $47,995 from P & D Sign Company of Peru to replace the digital display within the existing sign at Orlando Smith Road and County Highway 23. • A cash farm lease with Kevin Newell of Newell Farms of Mendota for 146 acres at $287.57 per acre or $41,985.22 per year. The three-year lease can be renewed for an additional two years. • Three-year renewal of software and support from Burwood Group for Palo Alto Firewalls for $51,438. Firewalls provide internet connectivity and security. • Purchase of SmartCatalog/Curriculum software for $26,200 to publish and update the college catalog. • Purchase of 160 Dell PCs for labs and offices for $149,748. The Higher Education Emergency Relief Fund will

finance the buy. • A 30-credit Industrial Maintenance I certificate, second in a series of three certificates to help students enter the workforce. It includes courses in safety, equipment maintenance, welding, blueprint reading, industrial electricity, wiring, rigging, hydraulics and pneumatics. • Criminal justice instructor and program coordinator Kevin Hermes resigned Oct. 8. Hermes joined IVCC in 2018 after 30 years as a police officer. The board learned: • Edgar Lucero Castillo has been hired as staff accountant in the business office. A graduate of IVCC and Northern Illinois University, he was the recipient of Northern’s full-tuition William and Dian Taylor Accountancy Scholarship. • Lynn Ewing-Teegardin is the new payroll and benefits coordinator. • Financial Aid advisor Amy Woods resigned Sept. 17; English as a Second Language instructor Mary Donovan resigned after three and a half years; and accounts receivable specialist/ cashier Krista Miller resigned Oct. 12. • IVCC’s bookstore is transitioning its website and inventory to Resero. In addition to an annual savings of $10,000, the website will be more functional and user-friendly. • Included in the board packet was an email Corcoran received from Rich West, a 1981 IVCC graduate. “I remain very proud of my AA degree, and without that foundation, I would never have become what I am today. I recall Mr. (Robert) Mueller’s English classes so fondly and while he’s not with us any longer, he remains among the top three professors I’ve had in my life! What an inspiration to continue on my teaching track!”

UNIVERSITY OF ILLINOIS EXTENSION

• The Committee on Accreditation of Educational Programs recently determined the EMS program’s annual report on the paramedic certificate met all thresholds in written exam, retention and job placement. “EMTs moving into the paramedic field have a great local option at IVCC,” Corcoran said. • Ag field day Sept. 17 included speakers from Stoller International, Sun Ag and the Illinois Extension. It was the last IVCC event for the Extension’s retiring Russ Higgins. “Russ, Daryle Wragge and Jill Guynn of the Extension have supported us from the moment we decided to relaunch ag,” Corcoran said. • Enrollments “appear to be trending in a more encouraging direction,” Corcoran reported. As of Oct. 11, headcount is up almost 4% with credit hours down a bit over 2%. “Thankfully, every week looks better,” he added. • English instructor Delores Robinson shared information on the college’s Center for Accessibility and Neurodiversity and the One Book, One College program during public comment. CAN provides students accommodations, coaching and study skills support. One Book, One College, a community reads program, is discussing Eric Eyre’s “Death in Mud Lick: A Coal Country Fight Against the Drug Companies that Delivered the Opioid Epidemic.” • Also in public comment, Local 1810 President Tracy Lee said the faculty union “wholeheartedly supports reopening IVCC’s Fitness Center” and returning Tony Ruda to Fitness Center director. Ruda also addressed the board and said the center has long been a fixture at the college.

7 students selected as Mad Hatter Ball honorees

NCI ARTworks will host fifth annual Mad Hatter Ball on Nov. 19 Student honorees representing Putnam, Bureau and LaSalle counties will perform and present their work at the North Central Illinois ARTworks fifth annual Mad Hatter Ball from 6 to 10 p.m. Friday, Nov. 19, at the Auditorium Ballroom in LaSalle. This year’s honorees include: Izzy Cacciatori, Hall High School; Jamie Dooley, Mendota High School; Catherine Engels, LaSalle-Peru High School; Jacob Ensor, Mendota High School; Emelia Grant, Putnam County High School; Zoe Kidd, LaSalle-Peru High School; and Allie Snyder, Ottawa High School. Cacciatori will present several works of original art. She is a junior at Hall High School and is the daughter of Amy and Justin Cacciatori. At school, she participates in the Devilettes dance team and student council. She has created paintings and drawings for seven years and her teachers include Hugo Heredia and Mary Janusick. One fun fact: She loves to create art, but has a talent for painting. She loves seeing her parents’ faces when she brings home her newest work of art. Dooley will present several works of original art. She is a junior at Mendota High School and is the daughter of EmLee and Daniel Dooley, of West Brooklyn. She is in the art program at school under the tutelage of Brock Sondgeroth, and enjoys working most in graphite pencil or clay. “I enjoy the way most people react when they see all of the things that I’ve had fun making and I find it fun to create wherever I want with what is at my disposal,” she said. She also is active in the Interact Club at school and plans to pursue a career as an English Language Learner teacher with hopes of teaching abroad. Engels will present a flute performance. She is a senior at La Salle-Peru High School and is the daughter of Amber and Brian Engels, of La Salle. At school, she is a section leader and plays flute in the wind ensemble, marching band and pit bands. She has been selected for District 2 Illinois Music Education Association at both the junior and senior levels and an All-State musician in her sophomore year, and has received superior ratings at solo and ensemble contests. She also plays

with the Illinois Valley Flute Ensemble, has received honorable mention and runner-up honors in the Illinois Valley Symphony Orchestra Young Performers competitions and has participated in the annual summer flute retreat performing in the masterclass of Gerald Carey, flute professor emeritus at Western Illinois University. She has studied flute with Sue Gillio since age 5, is on the high school varsity tennis team, and plans to attend Lewis University and pursue an aviation career as a pilot. Ensor will present a trombone performance. He is a junior at Mendota High School and is the son of Andrea and Chad Ensor. At school, he is active in the music programs as a member of the band, under the direction of Paula Baker, and in the choir and madrigals, conducted by John Steben. He has been chosen for District 2 ILMEA and is active in a variety of sports including football, golf and bowling. “I enjoy how music

creates friendships,” he said. He plans to attend Illinois Valley Community College and then transfer to a college for a degree in music. Grant will present several works of visual art. She is a sophomore at Putnam County High School and is the daughter of Lisa and Tom Grant, of Hennepin. She has been creating art for nine years under the instruction of Mary Janusick at Music Suite 408. She also participates in cheerleading at school. “What I love about doing art is that it gives me the freedom to express myself in different ways,” she said. “I think art is important because it allows people to tell a story without words to express their thoughts and feelings. My interest in art developed after doing my first painting and art projects with Mary. In the future I would like to do something with graphic design.” Kidd will present a vocal performance. She is a junior at LaSal-

le-Peru High School and is the daughter of Kim and Steve Kidd, of La Salle. At school she is in the concert and chamber choirs, under the direction of Matthew Butler, and has performed in the spring musicals and has performed in Stage 212 productions. She studies with Jenilyn Roether at Music Suite 408. “Music is a very fun way to spend my time and to me it feels like I will never be out of way to explore it,” she said. She plans to attend an in-state college and will pursue a psychology degree. Snyder will present a clarinet performance. She is a senior at Ottawa High School and is the daughter of Cindy and Chris Snyder. She has been playing the clarinet for eight years under the direction and instruction of Andrew Jacobi, Tom Makeever and Emily Gallagher. She played in the ILMEA district band in 2018 and 2020 and in its All-State band in 2020. At school, she is involved in volleyball, track, Rotary Interact and Honors Society. Her favorite thing about music is “that special feeling of sharing music with my friends and community,” and “hearing the assembly of the parts as they come together completing the vision of the composer.” She plans to attend a four-year university and study biology with a minor in music. “The Mad Hatter Ball is the regional equivalent of a state championship of the arts, where top notch local talent is honored, great food is eaten, and prizes and music and fun fill up the evening,” said Julia Messina, executive director of NCI ARTworks. “This event showcases local student performers in all of the arts: visual, music, performing, literary, etc.” Dinner music will be provided by Al & Jeannie Brown; Guys on the Radio will DJ; and the Mad Hatter will emcee the event, where the Queen of the Arts will be crowned for the fifth year in a row. Tickets are $35 and are available online at nciartworks.com or by calling 815228-1253.
