Shepherd given Rural Health honors

Doctor committed to rural health care SPRING VALLEY — St. Margaret’s has announced Dr. Ben Shepherd, of the Center for Family Health in Princeton, was recently honored as a 2019 Illinois Rural Health Association Physician of Excellence.

An award presentation was held Sept. 17 at the Center for Family Health in Princeton.

In a tradition started more than 15 years ago by the National Rural Health Association, the Illinois Rural Health Association (IRHA) has been honoring physicians who exhibit a special commitment to rural health care.

“One of the biggest health care challenges across our nation is the shortage of physicians who practice in rural settings. IRHA feels it is important to recognize those who have accepted this calling and gone out of their way to make an impact,” Margaret Vaughn, IRHA executive director, said.

Dr. Shepherd was nominated by Diane Potts, assistant director of curriculum outreach and development at the University of Illinois College of Medicine Rockford.

In her nomination, Potts stated: “He provides this care in a most compassionate way, allowing his patients the opportunity to remain near home, where they are able to avoid those wearing stresses related to traveling to larger city centers, with or without family, along with those financial burdens, which would necessarily be incurred.

“His successes in patient care result from his professional strengths in identifying patients’ needs in combination with his own personal demeanor. Patients develop trust and comfortability in speaking with him, as they feel that he offers thorough explanations describing their medical conditions and associated treatment plans.

“Dr. Benjamin Shepherd continues to serve and give back selflessly to the medical community by teaching the next generations of rural doctors. Although he is quite busy with a young family, he continues to precept third-year and fourth-year medical students … repeatedly over the course of an entire academic year.”

When asked about the award, Dr. Shepherd stated: “I am grateful to receive this award from the Illinois Rural Health Association. Being able to practice in Princeton with St. Margaret’s and work with the community is a true honor every day.”

The purpose of a driving record is to document whether a person has a valid driver’s license, and to track a motorist’s history of traffic violations as well as any sanctions imposed by the Secretary of State.

Driving records are often required by employers for employees who drive during the course of their workday.

Records may also be needed to obtain a new driver’s license for those who have moved to another state.

To use this service, customers will be

SPRINGFIELD — Illinoisans no longer need to visit Driver Services facilities to purchase their driving records because of a new program launched by Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White.

Motorists may now buy a copy of their driving record online by visiting www. cyberdriveillinois.com. This new program will allow customers to immediately print their driving record at the end of the transaction.

The program is accessible 24/7 at www.cyberdriveillinois.com through the

required to enter personal information for security purposes, as well as information from the hard copy of their driver’s license, such as driver’s license number, issuance date on driver’s license, etc.

They may purchase their driving record once the required identification has been entered.

The fee is $12 per record, plus a $1 credit card processing fee. The $12 fee to purchase driving records is set by the state Legislature and is the same whether the record is purchased online or at a Driver Services facility.

Once payment has been accepted,

customers will have immediate access to their driving record in a PDF file.

The records are the same certified record a motorist would obtain at a Driver Services facility.

In addition, customers will be emailed a link to the PDF, which will be available to view for five calendar days. Customers may save the record to their computer or smart phone, and email or text it to a third party, such as their employer or attorney. The electronic link is only available through the online service and is one of the advantages of obtaining the record electronically.

Students took the opportunity to pick Kinzinger’s brain about various ongoing issues including the tensions between Syria and Turkey, the funding of Trump’s wall and homelessness among veterans.

With Kinzinger making recent headlines for criticizing President Donald Trump’s decision to pull U.S. troops out Syria, sophomore Lillian Sandberg asked Kinzinger where he stood on the increasing tensions between Syria and Turkey.

He did not hold back, calling the situation a “catastrophe.”

“America didn’t stand by its word and that will have an impact on the future,” Kinzinger said.

“There’s going to be another war someday. … We’re going to need people to stand up with us.

Kinzinger said if he was in Trump’s shoes, his first move in solving this issue would be to first off, get rid of Twitter — an answer met with a loud applause among students.

He’d then encourage Turkey to stop their attacks, cut off their ability to purchase weapons from NATO, tell the Russians to get out of Syria, and work with parties on a peace treaty.

Jack Buffington, a Putnam County senior, asked Kinzinger what his opinion was on Trump using money from the general defense fund for a wall at the Mexico border.

The congressman said while he did not like Trump using emergency funding to do it, he supported the wall because of the ongoing crisis at the border. He added the crisis has nothing to do with immigration, but rather the money and human trafficking issues created by

him to being a congressman in his early 30s.

Because of his young age, he spent most of his early career being discouraged by people who said he couldn’t represent a district of 700,000 people. But he broke barriers and did it anyway. Today, he is serving his ninth year in Congress.

He also shared how 9/11 changed his life and influenced his Air Force career. When he got out of the Air Force in the summer of 2009, that’s when he decided to run for Congress.

Tri-DENT, Putnam County officials aided in U.S. Department of Justice investigation SHAW MEDIA The U.S. Department of Justice indicted three Chinese citizens with several charges involving the delivery of synthetic opioids that led to fatal overdoses, including one in Putnam County.

Tri-DENT drug agents and Putnam County officials assisted in a multi-year investigation that included may local, state and federal agencies throughout the U.S. “This is a prime example of working with our law enforcement partners (local, state and federal) to combat the ongoing opioid problems that plagues not only our local area, but also our nation and other parts of the world,” a Tri-DENT official wrote in a press statement.

According to the investigation, synthetic opioids were being sent from China to Pennsylvania and distributed throughout the U.S. U.S. Attorney William M. McSwain announced Deyao Chen, Guichun Chen and Liangtu Pan aka Liang Pan, all of China, have been charged by indictment with the following: conspiracy to import controlled substances (one count); conspiracy to distribute controlled substances (one count); and distribution of furanyl fentanyl, U-47700, and methoxyacetyl fentanyl — all powerful synthetic opioids (62 counts).

According to the indictment, in or about April 2016 through on or about March 22, 2017, Deyao Chen, Guichun Chen and Liangtu Pan operated through websites located in China and offered controlled substances for sale, including furanyl fentanyl, U-47700 and methoxyacetyl fentanyl. The defendants often used the same alias, “Alex,” when using these websites.

Customers accessed these websites and selected the controlled sub-

stances they wanted to purchase, and the defendants directed the customers to different websites to pay for their orders.

Upon receipt of payment from the customers, the defendants emailed the customers’ orders to David Landis, charged elsewhere, who was a distributor residing in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania and a former Montgomery County deputy sheriff.

The defendants mailed controlled substances from China to Landis in quantities sufficient to meet the orders from their internet customers. Landis would then mail the controlled substances via the U.S. Postal Service to customers located throughout the United States and in numerous other countries. In less than a year, Landis mailed approximately 2,900 packages of controlled substances to customers on behalf of the defendants. Landis has pleaded guilty and is awaiting sentencing.

Of the 62 distribution counts set forth in the indictment, one count alleges distribution of U-47700 to an

individual which resulted in serious bodily injury. The remaining 61 distribution counts allege the defendants distributed U-47700 and/or furanyl fentanyl to numerous individuals, including five individuals in Putnam County, Illinois, Georgia, Ohio and Tennessee who received these illegal substances and later overdosed and died with these controlled substances in their systems.

“China is supplying the United States with the most potent and deadly fentanyl and other synthetic opioids on the market today,” McSwain said. “Today’s indictment is an important step in choking the flow of these deadly drugs into the Eastern District of Pennsylvania.

International suppliers beware: you cannot hide behind a computer or evade our detection by drug trafficking from a far-away place. Even if you are halfway around the world, you will be held to account for your crimes.”

If convicted, the defendants face a maximum possible sentence of life imprisonment.

HENRY — Seven awards from the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution were announced at the Sept. 6 meeting of the Chief Senachwine Chapter, held at the Henry Public Library.

For a newly-formed chapter organized in the spring of 2018, the awards were a wonderful surprise to Chief Senachwine members, especially since activities occurred over less than a year’s time and were undertaken by new DAR chapter members.

Sheila Schrowang won three awards personally for her chapter coverage on Constitution Week, and Sharon Bittner won an award as schools chairman. The chapter won an award certificate and blue ribbon for its outstanding (notebook) report; an achievement award, Level 1, for its many activities; and an award for commemoration of the chapter’s namesake (Chief Senachwine).

Red Cross blood drive set for Oct. 21 in McNabb MCNABB — New Hope Parish will host the next American Red Cross community blood drive in McNabb from 1 to 6 p.m. Monday, Oct. 21. The drive will be held at Goldasich Hall in the McNabb Fire Department on Route 89, south of McNabb.

The blood drive offers a chance for

BRIEFS STANDARD — The Putnam County Community Center will host an AARP driver safety program from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 28, and Tuesday, Oct. 29.

This classroom driver refresher course is designed especially for drivers age 50 and over. The program aims to help community members retain their driving competency. They will learn about driving strategies, understanding the effects of aging on driving, reducing the chance of having an accident and knowing when to retire from driving.

After completing the course, participants will receive a certificate that can be presented to their automobile insurance holder that may entitle them to a discount.

A $15 fee for AARP members (with AARP membership card) and $20 fee for non-members is due on the first day of class, payable to AARP, for the instruction book and materials. Participants must attend both days.

Three Rivers Conference champ Riverdale (318) won its fifth straight regional championship by a 38-stroke margin of victory over runner-up Putnam County (356).

Putnam County senior Ian Roach qualified for sectionals for the fourth straight time, claiming his second regional championship in two years.

For St. Bede, it was all about a streak that ended as the Bruins (359) placed third to advance for the first time since 2014.

They were to be joined at the Class 1A Freeport sectional Oct. 14 by sophomores Bryson Smith of Bureau Valley and Rivers Jordan from Hall, who both qualified for the first time.

sen (79) and Sam Williams (80).

He shot a 31 on the front, but was hampered by four “blow-up holes” on the back nine, shooting a 44.

“I’ve been to sectionals all four years now. With some good play on the front nine, I should be able to take some momentum to sectional,”

Roach said. “Hopefully get a firstplace medal there.”

PC coach Chelsi Niewinski was happy with Roach’s game as well.

“Ian’s goal is always to contend in every tournament he plays in. Today he made it three out of four for the season in which he was medalist which is a great personal accomplishment for him,” Niewinski said.

“His 31 on the front 9 was some of the best golf I have seen him play.”

Roach is glad he isn’t going to the sectional alone.

“We’re moving on to sectionals as a team, which is all we wanted to do.

So I’m proud of them,” Roach said.

Niewinski was able to put a checkmark on the Panthers’ season goal list.

“We had making it out of regionals as a team set as a goal since the beginning of the season, so we’re really proud to have accomplished that goal,” Niewinski said. “We had an awesome front nine, but struggled quite a bit on the back nine, so that made it a little bittersweet. But we are on to sectionals which is the important part, so I am very proud of the boys. We are hoping to come out and post a nice score at sectionals.”

It marked the third time in four years the Rams beat out the Panthers for regional honors.

Lady Bruins win first regional in nine years

The Lady Bruins carded a 384 to win the Class 1A Kewanee regional by five strokes over the host Boilermakers. Peoria Notre Dame placed third with a 397. It was the first regional title for St. Bede since 2010.

Meanwhile, Putnam County’s Ali Ciucci, a senior, shot an 88 to place second individually behind Kewanee senior ace Riley Hansen (79) of Neponset, who claimed her fourth straight regional medalist honors.

Ciucci’s freshman sister, Gracie, shot a 112 to grab the last individual spot.

“It felt really good,” said Ali Ciucci, who birdied No. 16. “I was not expecting second place, that’s for sure. When I saw the final scores, I

“My drives were really good today,

but my short game was not as good as it usually is.”

“She was just consistent throughout the whole round,” PC coach Chelsi Straughn-Niewinski said.

“She had a couple holes where she had double bogeys, then she’d bounce right back and didn’t let it get out of control. She didn’t have anything higher than a six, which is always helpful.”

Ali Ciucci is hoping to shoot a career best on Monday and qualify for the state tournament for the first time.

“I hope to shoot in the low 80s since I know the course pretty well,” Ciucci said. “That’s really all. I hope to shoot a personal best, so better than 84.”

Straughn-Niewinski said the younger Cuici probably surprised herself.

“When she came in, I don’t think she thought she’d make it,” Straughn-Niewinski said. “I started looking around at the scores and said, ‘I think you’re going to be in the last spot,’ and she’s like, ‘No way.’ She was pretty excited once she found out she did make that last spot.”

‘Broadway Backwards’ will be presented Oct. 26-27 at IVCC

OGLESBY — A musical revue with a major twist will kick off Illinois Valley Community College Theatre’s fall season, when “Broadway Backwards” takes the stage at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 26, and Sunday, Oct. 27.

“Broadway Backwards” is a new type of entertainment that has recently become a popular and unique showcase for stage talent. Originating on Broadway as part of Broadway Cares, a philanthropic Actors Equity fund, it was presented as a one-night-only fundraiser featuring Broadway performers.

Director and choreographer of musical theatre at IVCC, Don Grant Zellmer, explained, “We’re following the original format of ‘Broadway Backwards,’ a revue in which women perform

Broadway songs written and performed by men, and men perform the women’s songs.

“In putting this together, we’re already enjoying one of our men performing ‘I’m Just A Girl Who Can’t Say No’ from ‘Oklahoma!’ or one of our women performing ‘Why Can’t A Woman Be More Like A Man?’ from ‘My Fair Lady.’”

He added, “We’re also pretty excited to have all eight principals from ‘Mamma Mia!’ back together, so there will definitely be some tribute to our biggest show on record.”

The large cast includes many community members, IVCC alumni, as well as performing arts students. “Broadway Backwards” is under the direction of Zellmer, and produced by Dr. David A. Kuester.
