SHAW LOCAL NEWS NETWORK Illinois Valley Community College will host its Fall Ag Open House for all prospective students and parents from 9 to 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 15, in the Dr. Mary Margaret Weeg Cultural Centre and via Zoom.

Guests will interact with current IVCC students and faculty, learn about the program and tour campus. Enrollment, financial aid and scholarship information will be provided.

Princeton family shares about their journey with son’s rare genetic disorder GOLDIE RAPP

grapp@bcrnews.com PRINCETON – The Chlum family of Princeton recently hosted an awareness event at Boggio’s Orchard in Granville in honor of their son, 5-year-old Ryne, who was born with the rare genetic disorder KBG Syndrome.

What is KBG syndrome? It’s extremely rare, for starters. Only about 600 cases have been diagnosed worldwide. The cases continue to rise each year as doctors and geneticists become more familiar with the disorder. KBG represents the surname initials of the first families diagnosed with the disorder.

KBG syndrome is a gene mutation that affects the body in a variety of ways, including developmental delays, speech delays, behavioral issues, small stature, low muscle tone, skeletal abnormalities, heart defects, hearing loss, seizures and more.

Ryne struggles with more mild effects, parents Kevin and Justina said.

He is short-statured and has low muscle

tone. Ryne was born with a hole in his heart and cannot keep up physically with other children his age. He has struggled with digestive issues since birth and sees a speech therapist. Other than that, Ryne is a happy child who loves life, his parents said.

Justina said he’s the wittiest child, who has the most hilarious comebacks.

Kevin said Ryne is very friendly and social. They get comments a lot from the teachers at Douglas Elementary School, where Ryne goes to kindergarten, who share that everybody knows Ryne because he has to say “Hi” to everybody he sees walking down the hallways.

When Ryne was born in May 2016, the Chlums had no idea he would be different. But as Justina describes it, something was always a little off about Ryne since the day he was born. The first sign was difficulties with feedings.

As difficulties and symptoms would arise, Justina and Kevin sought answers from doctors and specialists, only to be

told that Ryne was a healthy child with no serious issues.

But parental instincts continued to nag at them as Ryne developed into a toddler with more severe symptoms that never seemed to come with answers as to why they were there.

This sent Justina and Kevin on a three-year journey to seek out an answer so that Ryne could receive the correct help they felt he needed. They spent time at the Mayo Clinic in 2018, when Ryne was just 2 years old, where they visited with numerous specialists. A geneticist conducted a basic genetic test on Ryne, but it provided no answers for the Chlums.

Feeling defeated, they continued on with life until the following summer when Ryne had his first dental visit before preschool. It was the dentist who explained to them that Ryne had no adult canine teeth and that it appeared some of his teeth would grow out of the roof of his mouth.

Hearing this, the Chlums were adamant that their son had a genetic disorder. So they went back to the Mayo Clinic in 2019 to undergo a more thorough genetic test that finally came back positive for KBG syndrome.

Getting the results brought forward a variety of emotions for the Chlums. First, there was confusion.

What was KBG syndrome? There wasn’t a lot of information out there other than the brief explanation Google provided. Because it’s such a rare syndrome, not a lot of research has been done to offer more information and explanation. However, there was relief knowing they finally found an answer for their son. That was followed by heartbreak and worry about what this meant for Ryne’s future.

Right now, other than his short stature, Ryne appears to be just like any other kid. And he keeps up with his classmates on an academic level.

Justina said she will be the first to tell anyone that it’s because of Kevin and

his persistence working with Ryne on letters and numbers five days a week.

The Chlums know that there will eventually be a time when Ryne will begin to struggle and fall behind in school. Most likely, the third or fourth grade when students transition away from repetitive learning and Ryne is unable to grasp new information as quickly as others.

For now, Ryne is seeing an occupational therapist out of Naperville who the Chlums can’t say enough goods things about. She continues to provide them with a better understanding of Ryne and the reasons why he does things certain ways.

Kevin said there won’t be much more to do for him until Ryne hits puberty.

“Going forward, the most important thing for him/us is to monitor for signs of early puberty, which is common in KBG, and hearing loss, which can come on later,” Kevin said.

During the day-to-day, the Chlums cope by continuing to be a strong shoulder to lean on for each other.

They are also grateful for the strong support they receive from family and friends.

Justina admits it’s still a struggle to see other families with “perfect children.”

“It’s hard to not compare your kids to other kids as far as where they’re at academically or physically or with sports. I do struggle with that a little bit,” she said.

For Kevin, his worries include wondering about what the long term with Ryne might look like.

The Chlums said they definitely have a better understanding and awareness of the struggles parents are dealing with. If there is one life lesson they’ve learned through this journey it’s to be more compassionate towards other families with children, because as they say, “You never know what others are going through.”

Program on the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier informs DAR members SHAW LOCAL NEWS NETWORK HENRY — Members of the Chief Senachwine Chapter NSDAR were enlightened by the history of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier from America’s World War I entry into the war to the development and completion of a Tomb, honoring the thousands of World War I unknown American dead.

Smaller crypts honor unknowns from World War II and the Korean War. DNA development has now allowed identification of Vietnam War dead and subsequent losses.

The dedication of the Tomb on Nov. 11, 1921, became a national day of mourning. Many thousands earlier visited the casket as it lay in state in the U.S. Capitol rotunda, the first non-presidential citizen to be so honored. Huge numbers lined the funeral route from downtown Washington, D.C., to the final resting place at Arlington National Cemetery. Foreign and national dignitaries participated and awarded their highest honors in gratitude for the U.S. entry into the war on the side of the Allies and turning the tide against Austro-Hungary, Germany and other “central powers.”

Presenter of the PowerPoint program was Laurie Perry, Illinois State National Defense chairman and regent of the Rochelle Chapter. DAR members will celebrate the Tomb’s 100th anniversary on Nov. 11, 2021.

Following the program at the chapter’s Oct. 1 meeting, held at the Henry Public Library, members learned of Oct. 26 as the National Day of the Deployed (military) and wearing red on Fridays, red standing for R.E.D., meaning Remember Everyone Deployed.

Other committee reports followed.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and a quiz was offered to check members’ knowledge. Members did well. The belief behind the American Indian dreamcatcher was explained. A Constitution “minute” report and a Literacy Promotion “minute” were given as well as reports from the following chairmen: Commemorative Events, Community Service, DAR magazine and U.S. Flag.

October is also Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Members brought toiletries for donation to residents at Freedom House in Princeton. The action also serves as the chapter’s

MCNABB — Putnam County Methodist Churches will host the next Red Cross community blood drive from 1 to 6 p.m. Monday, Oct. 18, at Goldasich Hall in the McNabb Fire Department on Illinois Route 89, south of McNabb.

The blood drive offers a chance for repeat and first-time donors to save lives with their donation of blood. All blood types save lives. Putnam County treasurer issues deadline for delinquent real estate taxes

Putnam County Treasurer Kevin Kunkel has announced that certified mailing regarding delinquent real estate taxes will be sent on Oct. 14. The taxes are for the tax year 2020, payable in 2021.

Putnam County’s tax lien sale is scheduled for 11 a.m. on Nov. 9 at 11 a.m. in LaSalle County Courthouse on Etna Road in the LaSalle County Board Room.

Real estate and mobile home taxes for 2020/payable in 2021 and prior years are to be sold at the tax sale.

Registration for the tax sale must be 10 days prior to the tax sale on Oct. 29.

Marshall-Putnam 4-H to present three-part yarn program

Marshall-Putnam 4-H is excited to present “Yarn, Yarn, Yarn,” three days of

yarn activities.

PERU - Adam Diss thought for sure his phones would blow up. When the the state’s moratorium on enforcement of residential evictions expired Sunday, La Salle County’s new sheriff thought landlords would ask him to begin evicting many tenants.

Diss was wrong about the call volume – at least so far. His fear of an “overwhelming” number of evictions prompted him to issue a Sunday memo warning that subsequent evictions would La Salle County Sheriff be done by scheduled Adam Diss appointment only.

“It has not been bad so far at all,” Diss said Wednesday, adding that he’d made a plan with civil process staff to manage an influx that hasn’t materialized yet.

But the good news ends there.

“That’s definitely higher than we have ever seen,” Diss said. “But, unfortunately, this has been building for some time.”

Police chiefs, pastors and homeless advocates all agreed that the lifting of the evictions moratorium did not unleash an abrupt wave of homelessness. No agency Shaw Media contacted had reported a sudden influx of people seeking shelter or aid as a result of the moratorium ending.

However, COVID-19 and the resulting job losses were expected to strain households and lead to an increase in homelessness. Illinois Valley Public Action to Deliver Shelter confirmed that likelihood occurred and could worsen as evictions rise.

Illinois Valley PADS Executive Director Carol Alcorn said PADS registered 120 individuals, 16 of them children, since Aug. 15.

Alcorn had warned everyone who’d listen that pandemic-related homelessness likely would happen in late 2021, citing a documented lag of 18 months between the onset of a national crisis and the appearance of new homeless.

Her prediction proved correct.

“Our family rooms have been filling up,” Alcorn said. “We have recorded eight evictions or loss of housing as a reason for homelessness with this group of individuals.”

Eight individuals evicted or displaced comes to 7% of the current PADS population, but Alcorn echoed Diss’ concern those numbers are only beginning to rise.

“Evictions are not easily accom-

The trend hasn’t encompassed all of Starved Rock Country, however.

“We haven’t any [evictions],” Bureau County Sheriff Jim Reed said.

“There are a few pending, but we’re not inundated with them. There are only a couple.”

Putnam County Sheriff Kevin Doyle said his office is receiving some eviction activity, but he was quick to note that the volume has been lower than in recent years.

Sheriff’s sales were significantly higher between 2016 and 2019, Doyle said, and the sales leveled off as the COVID-19 reached U.S. shores.

“We still have some (evictions) coming up, but nothing like it was,” Doyle said. “Pre-COVID was probably the highest we’ve seen.”

The La Salle County Sheriff’s Office is telling landlords to call 815-494-8381 or 815-434-8382 to schedule a time and date for evictions.

Free legal assistance, such as that offered by Land of Lincoln Legal Aid, may be accessed through Eviction Help Illinois by going online to evictionhelpillinois.org or by calling 855631-0811.

Pritzker’s office had released $443 million in legal aid Illinois has received from the federal government prior to this past weekend. There’s $61 million still to be distributed, and another $60 million is available through a courtbased rental assistance program which is meant to serve as a “safety net” for those who may be eligible for rent assistance but otherwise have not applied, according to Capitol News Illinois. Landlords must include information on the program in court filings, and more information can be found at ilrpp.ihda.org.

Putnam County Rotary will recognize World Polio Day

One generation ago, decades before COVID, a virus even more lethal continued to cripple or take the lives of more than 350,000 children each year – 1,000 children each day. That virus was known as Polio, a fast-spreading disease that could kill or paralyze a child within just a few hours of contact.

Rotarians in the Philippines, soon joined by Rotarians world-wide, took on the challenge of eradicating the world of this devastating disease.

Partnering with world health organi-

zations, volunteers embarked upon a mission to vaccinate every child in every country and remote region of the world, sometimes at great risk to themselves. Today, there are less than 100 cases per year, concentrated in Afghanistan and Pakistan where cultural and political barriers continue to exist. The threat remains as the virus could again spread from that region, and as newborns must continue to be immunized throughout the world.

Each October, Rotary International

observes World Polio Day in recognition of the efforts made and still required to finally end the threat of polio. As noted by world leaders everywhere, we are “this close” to reaching that goal.

On Saturday, Oct. 23, Putnam County Rotarians will join in the observance of the day by sharing “End Polio Now” balloons and information from 9 to 10 a.m. at each of Putnam County’s three local banks.

Rotary members recognize that many area residents have stories to

share of their own experiences growing up with polio, or with those who suffered its effects. PC Rotarian Adriane Shore, who chairs the club’s Polio Committee, shared with fellow members this month that her mother was stricken with polio when she was three years old, surviving and strong enough to overcome her disability and, later in life, an after-effect known as post-polio syndrome. Born: December 14, 1987 Died: October 6, 2021 Katy Grace (Morris) Broshears left this earthly life peacefully on the morning of October 6th, 2021. She was surrounded by her family and friends, music and prayer and so much love.

Katy was born on December 24th, 1987 to Joe and Monica Morris at St. Margaret’s Hospital, Spring Valley, Illinois. From the time she was little, Katy displayed a curiosity of every living thing, from bugs to birds and the world around her. She enjoyed going out in the woods near her home in Magnolia, Illinois to mushroom hunt with her dad or hike with her mom. The apple orchard where she grew up

was one of her favorite places and Katy loved nothing more than whiling the day away in an apple tree with a good book. She loved to read from the time she learned how and a trip to the library or a bookstore was always on the top of her list.

Katy married the love of her life, Chris Broshears, on April 30th, 2011. Katy and Chris began their married life in Peoria, Illinois, where they shared many of the same interests from music and food to star-gazing and photography. They gardened together and went on long hikes at Forest Park and Wildlife Prairie Park in the Peoria area. Every vacation included hiking, especially in the mountains of the Smoky Mountain National Park.

Halloween was their favorite holiday and they always looked forward to throwing their annual Halloween party which included creative costumes and decorations and candy for all the neighborhood children.

When Katy met Chris he played drums in a local band, and from that day forward, Katy

never missed a show. She loved watching Chris play and supported his dreams 100%.

But what Katy will be remembered for the most is her generous heart and that beautiful smile. Katy’s innate kindness extended to everyone from friends and family to complete strangers. She had a way of welcoming everyone, always providing a listening ear or a place to crash.

She fought her battle with stage 4 melanoma like a warrior and worried more over how her illness affected her loved ones than how it took its toll on her. In the end, she may have the lost the battle, but Katy won the war with her concern and love for everyone she encountered on this difficult journey.

She was forever sweet and never, ever lost her quirky sense of humor. Katy was a gift to everyone she met and her middle name is Grace because we all were graced by God the day she was born.

If You Want ‘Renewable Energy,’ Get Ready to Dig,. Building one wind turbine requires 900 tons of steel, 2,500 tons of concrete and 45 tons of plastic. Democrats dream of powering society entirely with wind and solar farms combined with massive batteries. Realizing this dream would require the biggest expansion in mining the world has seen and would produce huge quantities of waste. “Renewable energy” is a misnomer. Wind and solar machines and batteries are built from nonrenewable materials. And they wear out. Old equipment must be decommissioned, generating millions of tons of waste. The International Renewable Energy Agency calculates that solar goals for 2050 consistent with the Paris Accords will result in oldpanel disposal constituting more than double the tonnage of all today’s global plastic waste. Consider some other sobering numbers: A single electric-car battery weighs about 1,000 pounds. Fabricating one requires digging up, moving and processing more than 500,000 pounds of raw materials somewhere on the planet. The alternative? Use gasoline and extract onetenth as much total tonnage to deliver the same number of vehicle-miles over the battery’s seven-year life. When electricity comes from wind or solar machines, every unit of energy produced, or mile traveled, requires far more materials and land than fossil fuels. That physical reality is literally visible: A wind or solar farm stretching to the horizon can be replaced by a handful of gas-fired turbines, each no bigger than a tractor-trailer. Building one wind turbine requires 900 tons of steel, 2,500 tons of concrete and 45 tons of nonrecyclable plastic. Solar power requires even more cement, steel and glass—not to mention other metals. Global silver and indium mining will jump 250% and 1,200% respectively over the next couple of decades to provide the materials necessary to build the number of solar panels, the International Energy Agency forecasts. World demand for rare-earth elements—which aren’t rare but are rarely mined in America—will rise 300% to 1,000% by 2050 to meet the Paris green goals. If electric vehicles replace conventional cars, demand for cobalt and lithium, will rise more than 20-fold. That doesn’t count batteries to back up wind and solar grids.Last year a Dutch government-sponsored study concluded that the Netherlands’ green ambitions alone would consume a major share of global minerals. “Exponential growth in [global] renewable energy production capacity is not possible with present-day technologies and annual metal production,” it concluded. The demand for minerals likely won’t be met by mines in Europe or the U.S. Instead, much of the mining will take place in nations with oppressive labor practices. The Democratic Republic of the Congo produces 70% of the world’s raw cobalt, and China controls 90% of cobalt refining. The Sydney-based Institute for a Sustainable Future cautions that a global “gold” rush for minerals could take miners into “some remote wilderness areas [that] have maintained high biodiversity because they haven’t yet been disturbed.” What’s more, mining and fabrication require the consumption of hydrocarbons. Building enough wind turbines to supply half the world’s electricity would require nearly two billion tons of coal to produce the concrete and steel, along with two billion barrels of oil to make the composite blades. More than 90% of the world’s solar panels are built in Asia on coal-heavy electric grids. Engineers joke about discovering “unobtanium,” a magical energy-producing element that appears out of nowhere, requires no land, weighs nothing, and emits nothing. Absent the realization of that impossible dream, hydrocarbons remain a far better alternative than today’s green dreams. Mr. Mills is a senior fellow at the Manhattan Institute and a partner in Cottonwood Venture Partners, an energy-tech venture fund, and author of the recent report, “The ‘New Energy Economy’: An Exercise in Magical Thinking.”

The Manhattan Dolls are an international touring trio founded by and featuring Festival 56’s very own Heather Stricker. You’ll remember Heather as Victoria in “The Business

of Passion” (Season 2, 2005) and Princess Winifred in “Once Upon A Mattress” (Season 4, 2007).

Again this holiday season, the Putnam County Food Pantry in cooperation with local schools, organizations and churches will prepare Christmas baskets for families in need who live in Putnam County. The baskets contain makings of a Christmas breakfast and dinner, toys and clothes for the children and gifts for senior citizens. The baskets will be ready for pickup Saturday, December 18th between 8:00 a.m. and 9:30 a.m. in Bonnuchi Hall at the Granville United Church of Christ and upstairs from the Food Pantry.

Due to COVID-19 guidelines, you will need to remain in your vehicle and we will bring the baskets out to you.

All families who wish to receive a basket must complete and return the request form or call Gayle Reno at 815-339-6480 before Sunday, November 7th or risk not being able to get a basket. Please include a specific wish list for your children including what type and names of books, music, activities, jewelry and specify if their ears are pierced or not and toys they like. Forms are also available at the Food Pantry for clients who receive food on Saturday mornings. Please do not fill out duplicate forms.

Regular clients of the Food Pantry will not receive a basket unless they complete a form. Baskets will be delivered only to those who are shut-in or have no access to transportation. Deliveries will be made the morning of December 18th, as well. We ask that you are home at the time of the delivery.

Due to COVID-19 guidelines our delivery personnel will not be allowed to enter your home. We will leave the baskets on your doorstep outside.

Putnam County scores Senior Night win over St. Bede

GRANVILLE – On senior night for Putnam County, seniors Linzee Fay, Jaidin Trone, Laci Calkins, Zofia Uzella and Sydney Miller led the way to a three-set win over the visiting St. Bede, 25-19, 25-27, 25-21 on Monday, Oct. 4.

PC senior Linzee Fay was happy to get the win as well.

“It was a really fun senior night.

The outcome was successful, and we played hard and pretty well all night.

I think we really jelled as a team tonight and were there for each other all night long. It is doubly special tonight, not only senior night but also the first time this class has ever beaten St. Bede.

“It always feels better after a win.”

Game 1 began with the teams feeling each other out before the Panthers strung together a few points

and opened a 9-2 lead. A pair of kills from Maggie Richetti, a block from Ava Hatton and a Fay ace fueled the run. The Bruins’ Ali Bosnich would end the run with a kill of her own, and the Bruins would bounce back on three aces from Miranda Mazzorana and a Lia Bosnich block to make the score 12-11 PC. The match was tight until PC’s Uzella ran off three points, including an ace, to make the score 21-16. The Panthers would get a well-placed floater from Hatton to finish off Game 1.

Game 2 was another tight set, as the both teams seesawed the lead until PC got some separation, with Hatton and Richetti supplying the power at the net. Again, Uzella was solid with the serve, and the Panthers led, 19-15.

But the Bruins came back as Payton Giordano delivered at the line, and the Bosnich girls took their turn controlling the net. The score was

24-all. The Bruins got a perfectly placed dink shot by Emily Robbins that found an open spot in the Panther defense, and St. Bede would prevail in Game 2 to force a third and deciding game.

In Game 3, the Panthers started on fire with Richette hammering down three kills and Avery Moutray adding an ace in her five-point service run.

But on the next Bruin service, Giordano answered back with the help of a pair of blocks by Grace Maschrman and Lia Bosnuch, and the match quickly leveled off at 8-all before PC’s Tori Balma was able to find open floor with a floater to stop the momentum.

It was tight until Putnam County scored four straight points on Balma’s service, but Mia Waters served the Bruins to within a point before Fay slammed the door with a laser to the heart of the Bruins defense.

service run by Balma and a pair of kills from Hatton, including the game-winner.

“It was nice to finish one off. We have been playing some close matches against good opponents and have been coming up short. The girls played well tonight and were able to close this one out as a team. I think we are peaking at the right time,” PC coach Amy Bell said.

St. Bede coach Abbi Bosnich was happy with the resilience her team showed.

“We came out slow in each of the games, but we battled back each time and made it a good match,” Bosnich said. “You always like to win, but when you can work on things and come out better, that is good too.

“We have been talking about focusing on the game, and not the crowd, and on getting mentally tough. This is a tough place to play, and I think it will help us later in the year.”

No. 6-seeded Putnam County split a pair of matches Saturday, Oct. 9 at the Tri-County Conference Tournament at Streator Woodland.

The Panthers lost, 25-18, 25-19, to No. 3 Marquette but bounced back to beat No. 7 Dwight, 25-17, 25-19, in the consolation semifinals.

Against Marquette, Tori Balma had 12 assists, three

kills, three digs and three points, while Zofie Uzella contributed six points, five digs, four kills and three assists.

Against Dwight, Balma had 16 assists, five kills, six points, one ace and a block for PC (13-12-1), while Ava Hatton added eight digs, six kills and four points.

No. 5 Henry-Senachwine lost, 25-20, 15-25, 25-22, to No. 4 Woodland in the quarterfinals.

Putnam County def. Marquette 25-16, 25-18 Tori Balma had 10 assists, seven kills, five points, two digs and a block Thursday, Oct. 7 to help the Panthers to a Tri-County Conference victory in Granville.

My favorite sports memory is winning 15U nationals on my travel softball team (Aftershock).

What do you like about volleyball?

I like being able to hang out with my friends, hanging out with Coach B and Coach Bell. I also love setting.

Besides volleyball, what do you like about fall?

I love to go to pumpkin patches and haunted houses.

What is the best Halloween costume you ever wore?

My favorite Halloween costume was Dorothy when I was little.

What is your favorite Halloween candy?

My favorite Halloween candy is Reese’s peanut butter cups.

Do you have any can’t-miss TV shows?

One of my can’t-miss TV shows is “Glee.”

What is your favorite subject in school?

My favorite subject in school is foods.

What are your thoughts on your performance last week?

I was very proud of my performance and the team’s. I thought we played really well against some competitive teams and I hope we continue to play like this.

51st annual Burgoo Festival Despite the early rain, thousands gathered in Utica on Sunday for the 51st annual Burgoo Festival. More than 300 vendors, including flea marketers, entertainment,

craftsmen and musicians, were at this year’s festival. Burgoo is one of Illinois’ largest and longest-running fall festivals, held annually on Columbus Day weekend.
