GRANVILLE — The final step in Granville’s McCoy Street project will soon be underway after the village board’s vote to reconfigure the northwest corner of McCoy Street and Hopkins Avenue during its Oct. 2 meeting. Village engineer Mike Richetta, of Chamlin & Associates, reported the work was estimated to cost $52,000. This amount includes engineering costs and a 20 percent contingency, although Richetta said the final cost could come in lower. He added the contractor was ready, and the bulk of the project would likely take about two weeks. The work would improve

accessibility to nearby businesses with ramps and a handrail. While the ADA compliant handrail is being fabricated, a temporary handrail Jared Baker will be installed at the entrance of the GranGranville ville National Bank. village “Let’s finish McCoy president Street and be done with it,” board member Jim Petit said before they voted in approval.

Water treatment plant Richetta said the renovation work at the village’s water treatment plant was on schedule and proceeding well. The remaining work will include two shut-downs for the plant when the new piping and brine tanks are installed and filled. The first is anticipated during the week of Oct. 8-12, and the second will occur approximately three weeks later. He said the project should be completed by mid-Novem-

ber, and that the shut-downs won’t cause any water loss for residents.

Village audit results Brandon McNeil of Hopkins and Associates presented the findings of the village’s yearly audit and said it was a clean audit, meaning the village is in compliance with all accounting standards for the fiscal year. “Overall, the village’s financial situation is very strong with all six village funds being profitable,” he said. Village attorney Brad Popurella later said he would soon have the new budget ready for the board’s approval.

In other board news: • The village board welcomed new Granville Police Department Officer Derek Busch. • Police Chief Kevin Moore reported the village would have to wait until May 2019 for a new patrol vehicle because the manufacturer wouldn’t have any available until then. • The next village board meeting is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. on Oct. 16.

Faith, family and modern worship Contemporary services find a new home in Putnam County BY DAVE COOK news@putnamcountyrecord.com GRANVILLE — A connection to the community is important for both new and longtime residents, and churches have always fulfilled an integral part of those relationships. A Granville couple has recently seen an opportunity to expand those connections by creating a local home for contemporary worship services. Brian and Carina Gonet are raising their family in Granville, but until recently they’d been traveling to Walnut to attend Sunday services at the Walnut Community Bible Church, where Carina’s father is pastor. “We love that church, and it’s everything we want, but it’s just not our community,” Carina said. Brian added there are no churches in Putnam County offering modern worship services, and that local residents have had no option but to travel to either Walnut, Princeton or LaSalle to find what they’re seeking. To fill this local need, the couple has begun the long process of establishing a new place of worship with the county. Although there’s no official name, pastor or organizational structure in place yet, they have begun hosting informal, open-door fellowship gatherings with coffee and doughnuts on Sunday mornings at 220 S. McCoy St. in Granville. Their hope is to offer “a simple and inviting place” for anyone who appreciates the support of nearby family and friends. “We want to be plugged in and able to give back to and help our own community,” Carina said.

She said a contemporary worship service is informal, typically led by multiple people and features modern worship music, as well as a variety of positive and engaging programs for youths. “We want to help provide a sense of home and friendship for those who’d like to have a stronger local connection within our community and haven’t been able to find it elsewhere,” Carina said. Those interested can visit and worship with the Gonet family and others at 10 a.m. on Sundays at 220 S. McCoy St., and all are welcome.

MARK — Each year, members of the Putnam County Rotary look for creative ways to help their community. For the past several years, the club has been awarded funds through grants from their district organization to help make these projects a reality. The 2018-19 Rotary grant project is titled “Pillow Pals.” This project began after a conversation PC Rotary President Brandy Sandberg had with the coordinator of the Toys in the Pantry project. This project provides toys to the children of families who use the PC Food Pantry. It was mentioned that many of the children said they’d be willing to trade their toys for a good pillow. “This is one of those moments that made me realize how fortunate I am, yet so sad that the basic need, such as a pillow, sometimes is unattainable for some,” Sandberg said. She added that pillows are a basic need, because sleep is a basic need, and that doctors believe a lack of sleep impairs cognitive function and leads to adverse physical conditions. Pillows, while important for all, are especially important for children and seniors. Because food pantry clients representing children and seniors are at the highest risk of not being able to purchase a new pillow, the PC

GRANVILLE — The Granville Library is seeking help in continuing to honor local veterans. For several years, the library has collected pictures of local veterans and displayed them throughout the library. They’d now like to take that a step further as Veterans Day approaches. They’d like to display a few pictures at a time along with a short story or anecdote about that particular veteran. If someone currently has a picture at the library and would like it highlighted, please send the submission to be displayed along with the picture. Currently, the library has only three World War I pictures and would like to collect more. Pictures from the public will be copied, and the original will be returned. This display has been an important addition to the library, and the hope is that it will grow. The public is invited to visit the library this fall and enjoy the pictures and their accompanying stories.

The Bureau-Putnam County Health Department makes routine and unannounced visits each month to various food service establishments in Bureau and Putnam counties to inspect the operations. Health inspectors use an identical scorecard at each facility, where they check for health code compliance in 45 areas. Each area carries a rating from one to five, with five being the most critical. Inspectors check the entire operations of the facility in 14 different categories, such as food protection, personnel, and garbage and refuse disposal. Beginning with a score of 100 p o i n t s, t h e h e a l t h i n s p e c t o r

deducts one to five points for every violation. The final total is the facility’s inspection report score. A passing food inspection score is 65 or above. At 65, the Bureau-Putnam County ordinance allows the health department to close an establishment, but a score doesn’t have to be that low for the department to close it. It depends on the number of critical and non-critical violations and the type of violations. Certain combinations can create a domino effect for food-borne outbreaks. All inspection reports are a matter of public record and can be seen at the Bureau County Health Department in Princeton.

Harbeck, the first officer “Starved Rock Sheriff” when the park became the second state park in Illinois (and who wore the badge number of 666); and, a CCC commander from company 1609, who was stationed at Parkman’s Plain (now known as the LaSalle and Tonti Canyon parking lot). Hikes will head out at 5 p.m. and then again at 6 p.m. Hikers will be led by a CCC recruit of Company 2601, and the famous ghostly figure of “the Pink Lady” — an Edwardian-styled woman from the late 1800s, whose ghostly image is said to have been captured on film by a park visitor. A cocktail party, attended by 16 former classmates and their spouses, was held on Friday evening. Saturday afternoon featured a scenic trip on the Spirit of Peoria river-

boat. The weekend was completed with a Saturday evening banquet at Landmark, which was attended by 45 former classmates and spouses. Attendees traveled from California, Pennsylvania, Iowa, Missouri, Maryland and Colorado. A wonderful time was had by all as old friendships were renewed and many stories were exchanged.

OGLESBY — Walter Durley and Hazel Marie Boyle’s contributions to Illinois Valley Community College will be celebrated during a ceremony at noon Monday, Oct. 15, in the Dr. Mary Margaret Weeg Cultural Centre. The Boyles’ bequest of more than $620,000 to the IVCC Foundation helped fund the purchase of 587 theatre seats, environmentally-friendly stained western hemlock wall treatments and energy-efficient LED house lighting — as well as greatly improving the accessibility of the Cultural Centre. IVCC President Jerry Corcoran will emcee the event, which will feature a brief history of the Boyle connection with IVCC by Fran Brolley and remarks from theatre director Dr. David Kuester and Student Government Association President Xavier Braboy. A plaque honoring the Boyles will be unveiled. Walter, who died at age 94 in 2008, served 22 years on the IVCC Foundation board and nine years as a college trustee. Roach, who was pleased with his outing, said, “My long game was pretty good, got some solid shots,” he said. “My irons were really good, too, but my putting was a little off. A few five-footers I could’ve made today, the greens were faster than I anticipated. Other than that, the day was pretty good.” Playing on his home course didn’t hurt either. “I’ve been playing this course since I was eight years old,” Roach said. “I knew where to go at every hole, which is why it was a bit disappointing to bogey on a couple.” Other Putnam County golfers scores in the regional were Luke Carlson (93, 25th), Ian Woitynek and Chris Uzella (106, tied for 49th place), and Luke Olson (117, 59th).

Group seeks employers’ input about labor force BEST Inc. posts online survey with Oct. 22 deadline A growing portion of the population in Bureau, Carroll, Jo Daviess, LaSalle, Lee, Ogle, Putnam and Whiteside counties is reaching retirement age, and data show that

there is not a population of younger workers in the area to take over their positions. This age re-distribution cycle will have a dramatic impact on the workforce in the Northwest Central Illinois Region for years to come. To address this issue, Business Employment Skills Team Inc. (BEST Inc.), on behalf of NCI Works, has undertaken a new initiative to help employers expand

their labor force by employing individuals in typically underutilized populations. To best meet the needs of companies in the region, BEST Inc. is seeking input from individuals involved in the hiring process in the region’s companies in the following fields: advanced manufacturing, agriculture, construction, education, energy production, food processing, government, health care, logistics/ transportation, retail, services, and

tourism/recreation. The BEST Inc. Targeted Population Employer Survey is open now and available online at https://www. surveymonkey.com/r/BESTinc. The survey is intended to help BEST Inc. determine how to adapt its services to link underrepresented populations with appropriate job opportunities in the region.
