Easing PTSD through music

McNabb veteran to use flutes to treat afflicted comrades

tcollins@shawmedia.com There were a few close shaves. Kenneth Troyan’s job was to fix radios in Vietnam and he sometimes heard mortar fire near his post. He was lucky to come home in one piece.

Some of his comrades were less fortunate. Troyan knows many veterans struggling with post-traumatic stress disorder and he’s privately wished for a way to help them. Recently, he found it.

Troyan, a McNabb retiree and lifelong musician, has launched a local chapter of Flutes for Vets, a not-forprofit entity that provides veterans with wood flutes and free music lessons. Troyan had long known that playing music reduces blood pressure and heart rate and was intrigued to learn it can alleviate PTSD, too.

“I’ve been playing the flute for three years now and have learned the calming effect of it,” said Troyan, whose arthritic hands welcomed the switch from a guitar to the six-hole American woodwind flute.

“The flute has a unique voice which is very calming, soothing,” he explained. “It’s not a loud instrument at all.”

Flutes for Vets was founded in Tucson, Arizona, and its founders have encouraged chapters in other states, recognizing the prevalence of PTSD as well as the difficulties in treating it.

Troyan agreed that veterans generally, and Vietnam vets specifically, have trouble opening up about their difficulties, much less seeking help.

Troyan founded the first Illinois chapter in May and has spent the past four months drumming up interest in the program — “It’s a lot of networking, a lot of calls” — and has yet to hand out a single flute. He thinks he’s still a few months away from sufficiently getting the word out to start holding clinics.

For those willing to try it, the American woodwind flute has relaxing properties obvious even to a nonmusician.

The instrument produces sonorous tones that lower stress — loud instruments such as trumpets, Troyan said, are less effective — and the act of playing keeps the mind positively engaged.

Hammers is assistant superintendent of the LaSalle County Veterans Assistance Commission, moved recently from Ottawa to Peru. She thought Troyan’s proposal was intriguing and agreed to help him reach out to struggling veterans.

“We thought it was a unique and exciting idea,” Hammers said. “We’d never heard of anything like that before and decided to have something different to offer our veterans.”

Hammers said the VAC alerted their social media followers to Flutes for Vets and the posts were widely shared. If Troyan does not yet have a list of signups, the interest in music therapy is percolating — and certainly the need for PTSD services is extensive.

“You can’t even put a number on it,” Hammers said of the volume of afflicted veterans. “We have a multitude of veterans coming in every day suffering (from PTSD) and not only them but the family members who care for them.”

Troyan is eager to help but he won’t simply hand out flutes on street corners. Interested veterans should be prepared to show proof of military service, such as discharge papers or a vet-

erans group membership card.

“Flutes for Vet is strictly designed for veterans with mental health issues,” Troyan said. “As long as I can verify that and they show a real interest, they’ll get a flute that day.”

Troyan recommends 30 minutes of practice a day, every day, to not only hone skills but to keep stress levels down with regularity. Those benefits might not materialize immediately as first-timers fumble with an unfamiliar instrument.

“There’s going to be frustration,” he allowed. “I want everybody to go slow and easy with it. Take something, play it, repeat it, go back, play it again — and then go on to the next step.”

Troyan plans to offer free, 12-week courses in which he teaches fingering and scales as well as simple and familiar melodies such as, “You are my sunshine.”

Though the program is therapeutic and Troyan harbors no hopes of discovering a hidden James Galway, he’s prepared to encourage veterans to take advanced lessons or pick up trickier numbers through YouTube, for example.

Eventually, Flutes for Vets will have a website and paywall. Until then, Troyan said he would gratefully accept donations mailed to his home at 3433 E. 1550th Road, McNabb, IL 61335.

PCJH students express positive messages

Putnam County Rotary receives grant for inspirational project MCNABB — Putnam County Junior High School students, returning from summer break, were greeted with a billboard sharing the message, “Your life is a rainbow of possibilities!” This is just one of several planned billboards that will change monthly with positive and inspiring messages, provided under a grant project of Putnam County Rotary.

The year-long project will include an opportunity for selected students, all PCJH Interact Club members, to

share their own perspectives and reactions to each month’s theme. PC Rotary will offer each for publication, beginning with the following essay of PCJH Interact President Eric Vipond and Membership Chair Bryson Brown: “The new bulletin board in our hallway reads, ‘You Are A Rainbow Of Possibilities.’ That is a great way to start the school year. Each one of us has so many possibilities this year.

We can do whatever we want to, it is up to us. We can decide what our goals are, just like the rainbow and find our ‘pot of gold.’ So every time you walk by the bulletin board, always remember that all your goals can be achieved!

Just like the rainbow, always be looking out for your pot of gold!”

Savanna Rietgraf is among University of Iowa Class of 2025

IOWA CITY, Iowa — This fall’s incoming undergraduate class at the University of Iowa includes Savanna Rietgraf of Tonica.

The Class of 2025 has yet again topped previous records in achievement with a higher average high school

grade point average, at 3.81, than any previous class. The average high school GPA for the classes of 2024 and 2023 were 3.78 and 3.76, respectively.

Rietgraf is majoring in criminology, law and justice in Iowa’s College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.

The first group was about 13 ladies. In 2019, approximately 45 ladies, ranging in age from 16 to 70, danced their way to the streets. Practice started in a garage and slowly moved to a new location and then once again had to move to an even bigger location. These ladies are the most creative when it comes to their outfits, head pieces and makeup.

Gateway Services, Inc. joins effort to observe National Disability Employment Awareness Month

Nationwide campaign takes place in October Gateway Services has announced its participation in National Disability Employment Awareness Month, an annual awareness campaign that takes place each October.

The purpose of National Disability Employment Awareness Month is to educate about disability employment issues and celebrate the many and varied contributions of America’s workers with disabilities. This year’s theme is, “America’s Recovery: Powered by Inclusion.”

The history of National Disability Employment Awareness Month traces back to 1945 when Congress enacted a law declaring the first week in October each year, “National Employ the Physically Handicapped Week.” In 1962, the word “physically” was removed to acknowledge the employment needs and contributions of individuals with

all types of disabilities. In 1988, Congress expanded the week to a month and changed the name to National Disability Employment Awareness Month.

“Our national recovery from the pandemic cannot be completed without the inclusion of all Americans, in particular people with disabilities,” said U.S. Secretary of Labor Marty Walsh. “Their contributions have historically been vital to our nation’s success and are more important today than ever. We must build an economy that fully includes the talent and drive of those with disabilities.”

Reflecting this year’s theme, throughout the month Gateway Services will be engaging in a variety of activities to educate the community on disability employment issues and its commitment to an inclusive work culture. A feature article is planned along with weekly informational posts via Facebook. Additionally, a celebration is being planned for individuals who have participated in the Community

Employment Services (CES) program and have met their goals of finding a job.

“Gateway Services is proud to be a part of this year’s National Disability Employment Awareness Month,” said Tracy Wright, CEO. “We want to spread the important message that we value all perspectives, especially those of individuals with disabilities.”

Employers and employees in all industries can learn more about how to participate in National Disability Employment Awareness Month and ways they can promote its messages — during October and throughout the year — by visiting www.dol.gov/ NDEAM. Gateway’s CES program, in collaboration with the Department of Human Services Division of Rehabilitation, provides services to individuals with a variety of disabilities from Bureau, Marshall and Putnam counties, offering a number of strategies and opportunities for employment. From resume building or developing interview skills

to the actual job search, the CES program covers all aspects involved with successfully obtaining employment. If needed, Gateway also provides a job coach while the employee becomes acclimated to his/her new position.

“Individuals involved in the CES program have a wide range of disabilities from intellectual or learning disabilities that have been lifelong to physical and medical disabilities that have occurred later in life,” states Wright. “Our philosophy program is that everyone who has a desire to work should be given the opportunity to find a meaningful job suited to his/ her interests and abilities.”

Gateway’s CES program has assisted individuals in finding jobs in a variety of occupations including janitorial, retail, office work and maintenance.

How domestic violence impacts children and teens Editor’s note: This is first in a fourpart series on dealing with domestic violence. The series, written by counselors of Freedom House, will run throughout the month of October, which is Domestic Violence and Prevention Awareness Month.

Each year, one in 15 children is exposed to domestic violence, and 90% of them are direct eyewitnesses to the violence. These statistics are reflected even among the communities in our five-county service area.

Last year, Freedom House served 139 children and teens who have been exposed to domestic violence, 20 of whom spent varying amounts of time in the shelter with their families.

When a child witnesses domestic violence in their home, it is important to ask three questions: How do they feel? What are they learning (from this experience)? How are they acting?

Whether or not a child sees the abuse happening directly, it will affect them in some way — often just as badly as an adult, if not more so, since their development may be adversely affected.

The effects of domestic violence often begin before a child is even born.

Exposure to violence during pregnancy may lead to trauma

symptoms in the infant due to hormonal and other biochemical changes in the mother. There is a higher chance of miscarriage and premature births, delayed brain development, and disrupted attachment with their parent.

As the child reaches preschool, the signs of trauma are not always easily detectable. During this age, the effects of violence are most often displayed as behavioral issues, such as regression to earlier stages of development.

Young children may have difficulties with potty-training or perhaps temporarily lose an ability that had already developed, such as speech.

Other times, they may display physical symptoms, such as frequent stomachaches or chronic asthma.

Some children turn their emotional pain and confusion outward, leading to more disruptive or aggressive behaviors. As they get older, they look more to their parents as role models and will begin to copy their behaviors, which have become normalized over time, including poor anger management and violent dispositions.

For other children, their behavior may not appear differently from their peers. However, their internal state tells another story about struggles

with low self-esteem, anxiety and depression.

The longer that children experience severe stress, such as violence in the home, it becomes increasingly more difficult for them to sustain resilient adaptation over time. It is not uncommon for teenagers to struggle with self-harming or suicidal ideation, while they may turn to risky behaviors, such as drinking, substance abuse or unsafe sex, as a means of further numbing their emotional state. Their own chaotic relationship with their parents can also create problems forming and maintaining healthy relationships of their own, perhaps even encountering violence or exhibiting abusive patterns in during dating.

You may not be able to protect your children from all adversity or trauma, but you can nurture them to help prevent the effects of chronic stress and provide them with tools to process their experiences safely.

Perhaps first and foremost, listen to your children. Believe their experience and validate their feelings while acknowledging the injustice that happened to them. That may look like simple phrases, such as “I’m sorry that happened to you,” “What

happened was wrong” or “It’s not your fault.”

Secondly, engage in open conversations with your children about the violence. Part of what makes childhood experiences of violence so damaging is not only that it happens, but also that it often happens in secret and goes unaddressed. It is normal for victims of domestic violence to not want to discuss it with their children; it may be easier to pretend that it didn’t happen, to believe that the children didn’t know, or to hope that they’ll just forget about it. However, denying the violence and its impact generally leads to more harm, since it causes children to become more confused and scared. They need to know that they’re not alone, that some of the life lessons they are learning are simply wrong (“Violence is normal” or “It’s OK for people we love to hurt us”), and that it’s healthy to share their feelings. Bringing these issues into the open relieves this burden from children’s shoulders — and acknowledging what happened and naming their feelings can help them better cope in the long term.

Marquis will be first-ever carbon neutral industrial park

Marquis Incorporated’s CEO, Mark Marquis, announced a plan for the Marquis Industrial Park to be the world’s first carbon neutral industrial park with onsite carbon injection.

Last week, Marquis began drilling its first 5,000-foot test well to determine the total capacity available for carbon sequestration in the Mt. Simon Sandstone on its site. The Marquis family will begin immediate development of the first of two 600-ton-per-day blue hydrogen and blue ammonia facilities,

as well as manufacturing for carbon neutral bio-based chemicals and plastics.

The Marquis Industrial Park in Hennepin is a 2500-acre industrial site with multiple natural gas lines, access to the electrical transmission grid, yearround river barge loading, interstate highway and Class 1 railroad. In addition to the blue hydrogen and blue ammonia project, the plan includes a state-of-the-art soybean crushing facility to produce bio-based feedstocks for

the production of renewable diesel and sustainable aviation fuels.

Marquis commented, “I am excited about low-carbon solutions to the climate crisis however our government has failed to recognize ethanol’s value as part of the climate crisis solution. As a result, my family may reduce our exposure to the fuel grade ethanol business.

Alumni flock to St. Bede for homecoming, reunion celebrations

St. Bede Academy’s 2021 homecoming celebration drew a record number of alumni to the Peru campus Sept.

23-26 as double reunion classes returned.

Several alumni were honored as inductees in the St. Bede Athletic Hall of Fame for 2020 and 2021 on Sept. 25.

The school honored 2020 inductees Dan Carruthers 1980, John Brolley ‘80, Erin (McGunnigal) Heide ‘00, the 2015 Bruins Baseball Team and Bill Liebe ‘70 (posthumously), as well as 2021 inductees John Barnes ‘16, Kayla MacDavitt ‘12, Dave Hancock ‘77 and J. Mike Fahey ‘61 (posthumously).

Richard Giudici, a member from the Class of 1946, presented the game ball on the field at the start of the varsity football game Saturday. Giudici, 94, made the trip from Davenport, Iowa, with his son Michael as St. Bede honored his 75th class reunion. The halftime show featured the Classes of 1970 and 1971, who were escorted by the St. Bede cheerleaders to honor the newest Golden Bedans and their 50th reunion class gifts to the academy.

The Class of 1970 raised over $50,000 as their class gift for a campus improvement project. This project included new signage throughout the campus to welcome all to St. Bede and a tractor with accessories for the St. Bede grounds crew.

The Class of 1971′s gift, which also raised over $50,000, will be directed to the gymnasium improvement project, which will be completed over the summer of 2022.

Both class gifts also will include a donation to Phase 3 of the Legacy Project for renovations.

“These generous gifts fulfill many significant projects,” said Julia Yaklich, director of mission advancement, in a news release. “We are blessed that our 50th Reunion classes continue to honor their experience at St. Bede by

The annual homecoming celebration began with the parade and powder puff game on Sept. 23. The variety show took place Sept. 24, followed by the Jim Lattin 5K Run/Walk on Saturday morning. For the fourth year, the Bruins Jam, took place after Saturday

afternoon’s football game, which included a lineup of performances featuring St. Bede alumni from the Class of 1977 through 2019.

Sunday concluded with a catered brunch coordinated by the St. Bede Alumni Association in the Perino Science Center. The Alumni Association made a special presentation during brunch honoring Andrew Bacevich,

from the Class of 1965, and Vic Abell, from the Class of 1956, as the recipients of the Distinguished Alumnus of the Year Award for 2020 and 2021.

“What a memorable weekend it was for our entire St. Bede Family,” Abbot Philip Davey, OSB, said. “It was wonderful to see everyone on campus, and you could feel the Spirit of St. Bede everywhere.”

Award-winning haunted house opened in Peru Mall this past weekend

Insanity Haunted House in Peru should be on your itinerary, its creator says.

Located in the heart of the Peru Mall, this award-winning production is entering its fourth year in Peru and was ranked third in the state by Haunted Illinois in 2020.

The 10,000-square-foot space is a yearlong project owner Pete Pavia undertakes with ever-changing rooms and attractions to ensure annual visitors always have a new experience.

“We started building this year in March and fortunately for us we have the lease all year long, so I’m able to work on it all year long,” Pavia said. “We started demolition in March and every year we try to do 30% to 40% new to keep it fresh.”

With just the finishing touches left to go before the Halloween season begins, Insanity Haunted House opens its doors Friday.

Insanity Haunted House sends visitors through with the group they arrive with rather than herding multiple groups through at the same time. For Pavia, he believes this creates a special experience friends and family get to undergo together.

“It’s a very intimate show and when I say that I mean it’s you and your group going,” Pavia said. “I don’t do ‘Give me your tickets and go, give me your tickets as go.’ ” Pavia’s house uses a timer system to signal when the next group should enter. Through many trials and work behind the scenes, Pavia and his Insanity Crew create an atmosphere where the groups will never meet within the house.

The haunted house takes about 15 minutes to complete.

For Pavia, this haunted house is a true production. He hires performers that go through training and work together to give the visitors a high-quality show.

“I tell our actors, we have 30 to 40 actors on staff at all times, we’re not going to scare everybody,” Pavia said.

“We’re just not, but if we can entertain everybody then we did our job.”

When it comes to the details of Insanity Haunted House, Pavia spares no effort creating an experience that manipulates all five senses

Pavia creates scenes from everyday items found in garage and goingout-of-business sales, transforming the repurposed materials into whatever he needs to suit his purposes.

The haunted house triggers individuals’ sight like most haunted houses, but also uses sounds and smells to give visitors a spine-tingling experience.

“Nothing beats actors and we are a very actor-driven haunted house,” Pavia said. “It’s that in-your-face scare that we’re going for. That’s what we want. Walls aren’t scary, but people hunting you in the dark, that’s what is.”

Pavia’s Insanity Crew uses custom costumes to take visitors out of reality during the time they are within the haunted house.

The actors take ownership of their characters, which they continually work on throughout the year. They also compete throughout the season to earn Chicken Awards for making people tap out of the haunted house.

While using jump scares, the show has its fair share of choreography

that has been perfected over many years to scare their visitors to the best of their abilities.

“You’re going to get a great show,” Pavia said. “We do all kinds of things, we are training all year long. We are training our actors and giving them characters. They have to learn their character.”

The Insanity Haunted House was previously located in the Charlestowne Mall for many years before the mall closed down.

After needing to find a new home for the business, Pavia discovered Peru Mall, where they have spent the past four years and have loved every second of it.

“What’s nice about the move here is that it’s just us,” Pavia said. “In St. Charles I had Elgin and I had Aurora and haunts all over the place. Here it’s just us.”

While there are other well-run seasonal haunts in the Illinois Valley, the subject matter and the intended audience of Insanity Haunted House is unmatched, Pavia said.

While younger children are

allowed within the Haunted House, it is not recommended, as the actors are instructed not to lighten up the show based on the age of the guests.

“I want people to come through here and say ‘Wow, I’ve never seen stuff like this before,’ ” Pavia said.

“That’s what I’m going for.”

Admission is $15 per person or $25 for a VIP (skip the line) experience.

The haunted house will be open every Friday, Saturday and Sunday in October. Sunday hours are 7 to 9:30 p.m., and starting on the third weekend, the haunted house will be open until 11 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays.

There will be a children’s matinee from 4 to 6 p.m. Oct. 17, 24 and 31. The matinee shows are put on without the actors for a less-scary experience.

There is also a planned blackout show that will take place from 7 to 10 p.m. Nov. 6 to close out the Halloween season. Pavia said that they have seen success from holding special Christmas and Easter shows for those who are looking to have a scare outside of Halloween.
