Experiencing growth through travel overseas Rotary’s short-term student exchange offers a new twist to educational program

BY DAVE COOK news@putnamcountyrecord.com MARK — Nothing changes your perspective on the world like traveling to another country, especially when it’s outside the protective bubble of organized tour groups.

Immersion in the day-to-day lives of the locals offers the best opportunity to learn about the lifestyles and traditions of a culture. Student exchange programs have long been a popular way for youths to experience this, but Rotary International’s short-term exchange has provided an interesting twist — pairing students together through trips to both their home countries.

Putnam County Rotarian Darlene Siegman recently hosted Putnam

County High School graduate Ben Just at a dinner at The Clover Club where he shared his experiences in this educational program.

“I’d definitely say I’m a different person now. It changed me, and I’ve grown a lot because of my experiences with Tommaso and his family,” Just said.

This past summer, Just spent six weeks hosting Italian student Tommaso Ghiara at his family’s home in Putnam County. Afterward, the two traveled to live with Ghiara’s family in Marudo, Italy, for six weeks.

Just said hosting someone full time took some getting used to, but in the end, he said, they had become very close and “were like brothers.”

While in Putnam County, they went camping and took trips to see the popular sites in Chicago.

When asked what Ghiara enjoyed about this area, the answer provided

by Rotarian Adriane Shore prompted some laughter.

“We took him to the demolition derby at the Marshall-Putnam Fair, and his eyes were so big.

He’d never seen anything like that

before,” Shore said.

Ghiara told her that while they had auto racing in Italy (Formula One, the highest level of auto racing), there was nothing like a demolition derby.

Once in Italy, Just said much of the six weeks was spent traveling throughout the country with Ghiara’s family. The cities visited included Montepulciano, Florence, Venice, Marudo, Pisa, Verona, Milano, Sienna, Bologna and many more.

The young men were able to spend more time camping together, but this time it was with the stunningly beautiful backdrop of Italian mountains, lakes and forests. During his presentation, Just shared many photos taken during this period, and Italy’s natural beauty could arguably surpass its’ long history of cultural beauty.

Endlessly surrounded by countless pieces of breathtaking art and the historic buildings in which they’re often displayed, one location above all others stood out for Just.

Always be gambling, just for fun Gambler 500 Road Rally zooms through Putnam County

BY DAVE COOK news@putnamcountyrecord.com GRANVILLE — Walking out of the Minit Mart in Granville on Saturday, a mud-covered Chevy Impala was seen parking. Its’ front fenders had been removed and the rear wheel openings had been cut for the installation of larger, off-road tires.

“That looks like you’re having fun,” the driver was told.

“It is, it’s a lot of fun,” the driver exclaimed.

Initially it was thought this was simply two guys who’d been goofing around on muddy farmland somewhere. But, looking towards the fuel pumps and on to Highway 71, several other muddy, questionably roadworthy and admittedly comic looking vehicles were filling their tanks. Many others sped past and continued down the road.

What was seen by Putnam County residents, and even reported to the Putnam County Sheriff ’s Office, was The Gambler 500. The Gambler is a rally adventure in which participants spend no more than $500 on their choice of vehicle and then see if it can complete the 500-mile course. There’s also additional fun

Max Gastel’s 1988 Honda Civic station wagon isn’t likely to be what you’d think of when imagining a rally car, but it is typical of what gets entered into The Gambler 500. With a spending limit of $500, the focus of the increasingly popular 500-mile rally adventure isn’t speed, it’s fun. challenges they can complete for extra points.

The first Gambler 500 was held only a few years ago in Oregon with 14 cars. That event has grown to approximately 1,600 cars and the enthusiasm has spawned other Gambler 500 events across the country. This year the Illinois Gambler

500 attracted more than 180 vehicles.

The teams in Granville all listed “fun” as their top reason for entering. This was the second year for the Illinois rally and every team spoken to had returned after the first year, many with the same vehicle. The starting point was at JC Whitney in LaSalle and drivers spent two days

traveling to a series of 49 waypoints.

“We don’t know everywhere we’ll be going until we get started, but we do know we’ll be ending somewhere in Indiana,” Dennis Mann, of Herscher, said.

Mann’s teammate was his son, Aidan.

“He’s 17, and this is a great way to spend time together because it’s nothing but fun,” Dennis said.

Mann said their morning included a trip through the popular off-roading site The Cliffs, in Marseilles.

Portions of The Gambler are off road or include routes that take drivers along the less frequently traveled, rougher and muddier paths through the rural countryside, hence the reports to the sheriff ’s office, according to a deputy.

Putnam County Sheriff ’s Deputy Jacob Frund stopped in at The Minit Mart and was asked by a driver/navigator team to autograph their vehicle, thereby earning extra points by completing one of the items on their “Shenanigans List.”

“We had a report of a bunch of vehicles out on West Bottom Road and usually it’s only the people who live out there who drive on that,” Frund said.

“It looks like they’re all having fun,” he added.

Midway through the two-day event the racers gather together to camp and there’s also an end-of-rally party.

The last item on the race’s “Shenanigans List” was a “Make Your Own Shenanigan”. This Putnam County reporter had the idea to write “Get yourself in the newspaper” on the back of a business card, signed it and handed it to Denault.

“We got extra points! This is why I love doing this, it’s so much fun,” she yelled as she laughed and jumped back into the truck to head towards their next adventure.

Rep. Long releases apology statement to former co-worker

BY DEREK BARICHELLO Shaw Media State Rep. Jerry Long, R-Streator, released an apology Sept. 25 to a former co-worker who said she was physically harassed, among other complaints, leading the state GOP to pull resources from his campaign and ask for his resignation.

Long said Sept. 19 he touched a former co-worker on her neck, denying any wrongdoing and vowing to stay in his race against Democratic opponent Lance Yednock, of Ottawa, for the 76th District house seat.

The House Republican Organization has said Long’s story does not match the one found in an independent investigation corroborated by

a witness. The organization said it has a zero tolerance policy for harassment.

The Sept. 25 apology is the first from Long regarding this incident.

“Although I feel that the non-threatening touch of my co-worker was nothing more than act of concern, and it was never conveyed to me that it was a problem, I want to say that I never want to ever put anyone in that position of being uneasy,” Long said.

“I, therefore, reach out with a sincere apology to my co-worker of the situation that I have put her into.”

Long said he will likely post the apology to social media.

Long has said the complaints

against him stem from a contentious relationship with the House Republican Organization. Between the House Republican Organization and Illinois Republican Party, Long had received more than $125,000 in this campaign with a donation recorded Sept. 7, according to the Illinois State Board of Elections.

“It’s no secret that the Republican Party hacks have disowned me and pulled away from me for something that has yet been proven,” Long said Sept. 23 in a Facebook post. “They have chosen to find me guilty without due process, therefore we must implement a grassroots campaign to make sure we maintain this seat.”

Long said he will address the com-

plaint at a campaign event at August Hill Winery in Utica, in which he’s asking those in attendance to open their checkbook for $25, $50 or $100 donations.

The House Republican Organization, through spokeswoman Eleni Demertzis, said last week it stands by the independent investigator’s report and subsequent actions rendered to Long.

The complainant said in a statement through the House Republican Organization “the verbal abuse and abuse of power on a daily basis resulted in a hostile work environment.” Her name has been withheld by the state organization to respect a request for privacy.

Rules for the event are positive, straightforward and simple. They include don’t be a jerk; this isn’t a race, it’s a fun rally adventure; be weird and choose weird or impractical vehicles; no minors allowed; if you have a 4WD vehicle be prepared to help others; leave no trace of yourself; you can’t abandon your vehicle; and vehicles must be street legal.

Leaving no trace of yourself is an important aspect of the race and extra points are awarded to the team collecting the most trash from the campsites and along the routes.

“We work on this all year and the group has a saying — ‘ABG,’ or Always Be Gambling,” Jordan Ritz, driver of a 1991 Suburu Justy, said.

He added the group’s members are all friendly and help each other online to locate parts and repair and/or modify their vehicle.

Max Gastel, of Rockford, was driving a 1988 Honda Civic station wagon. Its appearance is hard to describe and he got several laughs when he announced it’s his daily driver.

“I drive this every day and part of my soul is in this car,” he said proudly. Anyone putting faith in such a vehicle should be commended and he added that he’s never been in doubt of making it to the finish.

One of the final vehicles to pull into Granville was a replica of the famous Pizza Planet truck from the Toy Story movies. While not a Toyota, the yellow Ford Ranger belonging to Micheal Caceres and Angela Denault was surprisingly accurate.

With the staggeringly beautiful landscapes and art works experienced by Just, there was yet another area of Italian culture that deeply impressed him.

“The food was definitely not a problem. I put on some weight there, and honestly felt kind of fat when I got back,” he said, smiling.

A future culinary student, Just took advantage of being in Italy and learned everything he could about Italian food. He returned home with several recipes and a strong appreciation of their style.

He said Italian homes are very similar to American homes, but added there’s a much stronger sense of family and community among the Italians.

“There was company every night.

Sometimes it was family, other times it was friends or neighbors, or you might be going to visit them at their home,” he said.

Language barriers are always a concern when traveling to another country, and while Just did have some regrets with not preparing himself more, he adapted quickly.

“At first, I was really frustrated and angry at myself for not making more of an effort to learn Italian, but within a couple of weeks I started being able to communicate.

By the end of the six weeks though, while still broken, I could make myself understood pretty well. I’d like to be able to speak it more,” he said.

fisherman he met while camping.

While neither could fully speak each other’s native language, they successfully conversed for 20 minutes.

“They don’t care if you’re not perfect. It means more to them that you’re trying,” Just said.

In October, Just will be traveling to New York to attend the Institute of Culinary Education. Following his graduation, he said he’d love

to focus on Italian food and return to Italy.

“I consider Tommaso and his family to be my family now. I’d definitely recommend this program to other Putnam County students,” he said.

The Rotary’s short-term youth exchange program is open to Putnam County High School students ages 15-19. Those entering the program will be paired with a student from Spain, France, Germany or Italy for four to six weeks here, and another four to six weeks in their home country.

The Rotary covers the application and registration expenses. There is also a requirement for a two-day orientation for students and parents at Rock Falls in March. Families are responsible for the cost of the overnight stay, as well as for transportation, insurance and the costs involved with hosting a student for the duration of the program. Students are paired by age, gender and interests, and there is no language requirement.

Applications are due by Dec. 1 and are available upon request by emailing PutnamCountyRotary@gmail. com. The selection of students will be completed by the PC Rotary by Dec. 15. The selections will be subject to the acceptance by the District Rotary and the “match” placement of students, a process that will begin in January.

HENNEPIN — The Putnam County Health Department is now offering walk-in flu clinics for adults age 18 years and older.

Most private insurance is accepted. Medicare Part B, cash and checks will also be accepted. Participants should bring a current insurance card or Medicare Part B card with them. For all others, the fee is $30 cash or check. (Medicaid is not accepted for adult flu vaccines.)

Those not able to attend the clinics

may call the Putnam County Health Department for an appointment.

Children’s flu shots will be given in the Putnam County Health Department office by appointment. The Health Department is at 220 E. High St. in Hennepin.

According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control, everyone age 6 months or older should get a flu shot.

Following the “three C’s” (cover your cough, contain the spread of disease by staying home if you are sick, and

control the disease by washing your hands) will also help to keep your family healthy during flu season.

On average, 5 to 20 percent of Americans catch the flu every year, with more than 200,000 being hospitalized (including 20,000 children ) and 36,000 dying from flu complications. The best way to prevent the flu is getting a flu shot every year.

The following clinics are for adults 18 years and older. Call the health department at 815-925-7326 for children’s flu

shot appointments and adults not able to attend the public clinics.

Walk-in clinics, with no appointment necessary, will be held on the following dates: • Thursday, Oct. 11 — 1:30 to 3 p.m. at the Granville American Legion.

• Monday, Oct. 15 — 4:30 to 6 p.m. at McNabb EMS Building on Route 89.

• Tuesday, Oct. 16 — 2 to 3 p.m. at the Hennepin Pool.

• Thursday, Oct. 18 — 9:30 to 11 a.m. at the Standard Senior Center-PCAS.

Medicare Open Enrollment is October 15- December 7.

Health Department schedules 2018 flu clinics

WASHINGTON, Ill. — Dante J. Rinaldi, 89, of Washington, Ill., died Monday, Sept. 24, 2018, at Washington Reflections Memory Care in Washington, Ill. Dante was born Sept. 26, 1928, in Toluca to Isacco and Adele (Tassi) Rinaldi. He married Sylvia Trovero Oct. 9, 1954, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Granville. They would have been married 64 years in October.

He worked at Hart/Carter and was in maintenance at Caterpillar for 21 years. He was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Washington, Ill. He and Sylvia enjoyed traveling the United States. He was also an avid Chicago Cub fan.

Survivors include his wife, Sylvia of Washington, Ill.; one brother, Mario Rinaldi of Cupertino, Calif.; one sister, Frieda Pattarozzi of Peru, formerly of Mark; and many nieces and nephews, and great-nieces and great-nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Jenny Kovacevich.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held Friday, Sept. 28, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Granville with Father Bob Spilman officiating.

Burial was in Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery in Granville. Visitation was held prior to the service at the church.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Masses.

SPRING VALLEY — Lucille A. Dzierzynski, 84, of Spring Valley passed at 4:10 p.m. Monday, Sept. 24, 2018, surrounded by her family at home in Prescott Valley, Ariz.

She was born July 18, 1934, in Mendota to Peter and Leona (Hutt) Funfsinn. She married Anthony Dzierzynski on May 7, 1955.

She and husband owned and operated Valley Electric Company in Spring Valley, before opening the Lawn and Garden Center in LaSalle in 1986.

She also worked at the Spring Valley Nursing Home, Peru Mall, The Golden Bear and Westclox.

She enjoyed spending time on her family’s land and favorite pasttime, playing bingo.

Along with her husband of 60 years, they enjoyed bowling and square dancing together.

She is survived by two daughters, Linda (James) Miller of Prescott Valley, Ariz., and Sheri Lechner of Spring Valley; two sons, Duane (Michelle) Dzierzynski of Cedar Point and Anton Dzierzynski of Hennepin; her grandchildren, Jeremy, Michael, Nathan (with the U.S. Army), Mikali, Caleb, Madelyn, Breann, Blake, Drew (with the

U.S. Air Force), McKenzie, Carly, Jordan and Amanda (technical sergeant with the U.S. Air Force); five great-grandchildren, Devin, Alora, Sloan, Jonas and Traeger; five sisters, Esther, Rita, Alberta, Barbara and Vera; and two brothers, Cletus and James.

She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; one son Daryl; two sisters, Theresa and Doris; and one brother, George.

Funeral services were scheduled for 3 p.m.

Sunday, Sept. 30, in Faith Church in Peru with the Rev. Steve Adamson officiating.

Private burial was scheduled for Monday, Oct. 1, in Valley Memorial Park in Spring Valley.

Visitation was from 4 to 8 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 29, in the Hurst Funeral Home in LaSalle.

Additional visitation was in the church on Sunday, Sept. 30, from 2 p.m. until the time of services. A luncheon followed services in the church.

Pallbearers were her grandsons and granddaughters.

Food pantry needs bags

Omicron Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma Society meets in Ottawa ducted by Mary Sue Myers. As part of an on-going project, the Personal Growth and Services Committee collected school supplies for River’s Edge Academy teachers. In October, members will fill jars with loose change to help support area food pantries.

The Ways and Means Committee reported on the 2018 Blueberry Project. Members picked, packed and delivered 737 pounds of blueberries.

This was the 13th season for their blueberry project. They have now picked 8,350 pounds of blueberries or 4.175 tons. The committee’s next project will be a fundraiser sponsored by Schwan’s.

All profits from chapter projects will fund the following chapter projects: Martha’s Books, Recruitment Grant, Grant-in Aid and three classroom stipends for members.

The chapter’s next meeting will be Tuesday, Oct. 16, at the Pitstick Pavilion. The program will be a travel adventure.

The Delta Kappa Gamma Society International is a professional honorary society of key women educators. The Society promotes professional and personal growth of its members and excellence in education. OTTAWA — The Omicron Chapter of the Delta Kappa Gamma Society International met Sept. 18 at the Pitstick Pavilion in Ottawa.

Lambda State (Illinois) President Debra LeBlanc installed the chapter’s new officers. Installed were co-presidents Mary Sue Myers of Peru and Bev Madsen of Ottawa; first vice president Patty Hopkins of Ottawa; second vice president Fran Ogden of Marseilles; recording secretary Marilee Applebee of Seneca; corresponding secretary Alaina Weatherford of Ottawa; treasurer Janice Kaufman of Mendota; and assistant treasurer Mechthild Ferguson of Ottawa.

The program, Omicron in Wonderland, was presented by the special events committee. Silver fringe decorated the front doors to give the illusion of entering the looking glass.

Tables were arranged for a Mad Hatter’s Tea Party. Members participated in activities with the Mad Hatter, Patty Hopkins; Queen of Hearts, Kay Carlson; the White Rabbit, Teresa Cameron; and assisting was the Cheshire Cat, Caroline Martin.

Reddick Mansion will present ‘Ghosts The polls at the election will be open at 6:00 o’clock A.M. and will continue to be open until 7:00 o’clock of Ottawa Past’ on Oct. 12 and 13

OTTAWA — On Friday, Oct. 12, and Saturday, Oct. 13, the Reddick Mansion Association will reprise its “Ghosts of Ottawa Past” program with some new and different stories.

The guided tour will begin in the East Parlors of the candle-lit Reddick Mansion where participants will “attend” Mr. Reddick’s funeral. After the funeral, the group will take an approximate quarter-mile outside walk along Columbus and LaSalle streets. The tour will include the story of the only recorded case of spontaneous combustion in LaSalle County, and a stop at the site of the death of the first Ottawa fireman killed in while on duty. During the walk, other famous and infamous ghostly characters from Ottawa’s past may also appear.

Two tours will be given each night

— one at 7 p.m. and one at 9 p.m. After each of the walking tours, the groups will return to the Reddick Mansion for hot apple cider and refreshments.

The cost is $15 per person and, due to the subject matter, participants should be at least 12 years old. For reservations, call the Reddick Mansion at 815433-6100 or visit their website at www. reddickmansion.org. Each tour is limited to 20 people and reservations are strongly suggested. All money raised will be used for the preservation and renovation of the Reddick Mansion.

Putnam County girls golfers compete in meets Putnam County golfers won the United Open at Gibson Woods in Monmouth on Saturday. Kelli Kennedy (94) placed first overall. Ali Ciucci (98) was third overall. Rylee Liles and Madi Keegan tied for fourth with rounds of 102. In the Tri-County Conference Tournament at Pontiac Elks, Kelli Kennedy (87) was first overall. Ali Ciucci (93) tied for second. Rylee Liles carded a 103 while Madi Keegan had a round of 120. Taryn Grasser did not finish due to an injury.

CROSS COUNTRY St. Bede edges Putnam County

Putnam County and St. Bede boys and girls cross country teams competed in a coed meet on Sept. 27 at the Putnam County Conservation District. St. Bede edged Putnam County, 27-28. The boys and girls scored as one team with the girls started running six minutes ahead of the boys. Putnam County runners were Mike Dzierzynski, first in 17:51; Annie Sabotta, fifth in 28:04; Nick Mattern, sixth in 22:27; Matt Haage, seventh in 22:27; Joey Twardowski, eighth in 22:35; Wes Grimshaw, 13th in 24:48; and Becky Ramey, 18th in 32:55.
