Funds are finally flowing

GRANVILLE — After years of keeping schools on the edge of financial insecurity, the passage of a state budget and a new educational funding formula by the state legislature is finally relieving some of the pressure.

While no mandated funds have begun flowing yet and a substantial amount remains due from last fiscal year, Put-

nam County Superintendent Carl Carlson reported during the Sept. 18 school board meeting that the district has begun to receive other payments from the state.

Currently the amount owed to the Putnam County School District from last fiscal year totals $332,025.07. The bulk of that is owed for transportation and special education, with each fund owed more than $132,000.

Hennepin to receive trees from Rotary Rest of county will also benefit from tree donations

BY DAVE COOK news@putnamcountyrecord.com HENNEPIN — Most communities would likely agree they’ve lost a substantial number of trees over the past several years because of pestilence, disease and storm damage. The Putnam County Rotary has recently announced they’ve committed themselves to helping reverse this trend through a generous donation of trees which will benefit the entire county.

Putnam County Rotary president Debbie Buffington spoke to the Hennepin Village Board during their Sept. 20 meeting to discuss the Rotary Club’s newest initiative.

“Our international president has challenged each club this year to plant a tree for each member. Our club is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year, so we’ve decided to do him one better and plant a tree for each year of our existence,” Buffington said.

She said there are plans to plant three trees in each village of the county, as well as at every school.

Each village will get to decide where the trees are planted and they will mostly be a combination of maples, aspens and birches.

Each will be 6- to 12-feet tall and Buffington added that fall colors were also considered. The selected trees will turn either red, yellow or orange and one variety will have a range of all three.

The club has secured the donation of 40 trees so far, and Buffington said there’s been additional interest from people wanting to donate a tree to be planted in honor of a loved one. There are also people who have volunteered to help with the planting.

“We’d love to have these trees; thank you for such a generous donation,” Hennepin Village President Kevin Coleman said.

Village engineer Bill Shafer reported that the street improvements throughout the village are progressing as expected and that the widening of Sixth Street would be starting soon.

The village has set the hours for trick-or-treating from 5 to 7 p.m. on Oct. 31. The Hennepin Fire Department will open at 4:30 p.m. and will serve hot dogs, treats and other refreshments until 7 p.m.

Trustee Quentin Buffington reported most of the work to improve the electrical system at the Walter Durley Boyle park has been completed and is ready to be switched over, but because Ameren has sent work crews to assist with hurricane damage there are currently no crews available.

Leaf burning Coleman asked residents to observe the following guidelines concerning the burning of leaves: • Burning is allowed any day of the week from 10 a.m. to dusk.

• No burning is allowed within 24 hours of a half-inch of rain.

• Fires must be extinguished with no smoldering.

• The street department will not pick up bagged leaves or branches.

Carlson said the district has received three General State Aid payments already this year. He said the first two came late, but added that the payments will soon be back on schedule with the normal two payments per month.

“Currently, we’re getting about $16,000 more per payment because of the new formula factors. Those are tentative amounts because they’re still finalizing the formula breakdowns for all the districts in the state, but that’s up from $22,000 last year to $38,000 and that’s needed revenue for us and good news,” he said.

been in discussion with area banks and will be providing the board with an investment update at the October meeting.

“We’re discussing other options in order to find ways to maximize our tax payer dollars for investments,” he said.

Student ambassadors The board was introduced to this year’s new student liaisons who have been selected to address the board with their concerns or compliments throughout the school year. Senior Bailey Davenport thanked the board for the opportunity and complimented the art program and fall play.

Road closure announced The Illinois Department of Transportation has announced there will be a complete road closure and detour for culvert replacement in Putnam County on Route 18, 1.2 miles east of Route 89. Work is scheduled to begin on Monday, Oct. 2, and should be completed by Friday, Oct. 6. A marked detour route using Interstate 39, Route 71 and Route 89 will be used. to thank the board for the new lockers and to compliment the benefits of the new 10 point grading scale.

Chickens and Lions rule the roost at meeting Board asked to reconsider ordinance banning chickens in village

BY DAVE COOK news@putnamcountyrecord.com GRANVILLE — Villagers in support of Granville allowing backyard chickens made an argument for the board to reconsider the ordinance against them.

Tonni Wink, a leader of the PC Progressors, a local 4-H club with 38 members, was joined by the Hartman family of Granville and fellow resident Chad Lucas at the Granville Village Board meeting Sept. 19.

Connie Hartman said the ordinance against chickens was previously unknown to her and said her family has been keeping chickens in their yard for two years without complaints.

“Caring for chickens has helped teach me how to do chores and how to be responsible,” 4-H member Owen Hartman, 10, said.

Wink presented the board with information dispelling common myths about chickens.

She said there are protocols in place to ensure chickens are healthy, citing there are even federal regulations which allow chicks to be sent through the mail to the Granville Post Office.

She said hatcheries have to be licensed for sanitation and disease control, that chickens have to be tested and have their

health papers prior to showing, and added that testing is cheap and easy.

“We’re not asking to keep cattle, just poultry. If somebody can have homing pigeons, what’s the difference in having some chickens?” Lucas asked the board.

Wink said it typically costs about $500 to begin a backyard flock.

“This is not going to be a fly-by-night interest for people because of the initial cost; people who want to do this will be committed to doing it the right way and no one will be doing it for profit,” she said.

Wink said several other communities allow backyard poultry, including Chicago.

“If Chicago, with all their other problems, can allow chickens, I don’t see why we can’t, especially since we’re in a rural area and several other communities around us allow them,” she said.

Wink explained to the board how chicken feed is kept securely to prevent attracting pests, how they’re cooped at night and added that the village, with or without chickens, is already regularly visited by raccoons, deer, foxes, possums, rabbits, squirrels and other wild animals, including a large number of feral cats.

“How is it any different from all the hunters and fishermen who clean their deer and fish in their garages? I see it all the time and no one has a problem with that,” she said.

Only allowing FFA or 4-H members to keep backyard poultry was mentioned, but the seemingly discriminatory idea was shown to have an additional problem.

“My kids have now aged out of 4-H and FFA. So after 20 years of having chickens, I’d be expected to just get rid of them?” Wink asked the board.

The board didn’t take any action.

Lions Club spoke to the board about the interest they’ve received regarding starting a chapter either in Granville or in Putnam County after the club attended the Granville Cruise and a health fair at Putnam County High School.

They said the Lions Club is the world’s largest service-oriented humanitarian organization and that any money collected in the community stays to benefit the community. In the event of an emergency, communities with Lions Club chapters have access to quickly approved grants.

“After the recent tornado in Naplate, I had secured a $10,000 grant for them within 45 minutes,” Lion Pat Gaffney said.

The Lions also offer matching grant funds for community projects.

The representatives also ensured there wouldn’t be any conflicts with other fraternal organizations already present in the area, such as the Rotary.

“We’re all on the same page for the same reason and that’s to help the community. We often like to do a joint project together when we establish a new chapter in order to demonstrate that,” Gaffney said.

As with many fraternal organizations, they were especially interested in finding younger

members to assist with projects as older members age.

There are currently 507 Lions Clubs in Illinois and 20 members are needed to start a chapter.

An alternative to a new chapter, in the event of there not being enough initial members, is to create a branch club associated with a nearby chapter in another community. A branch club only requires eight members and as the membership roster grows and reaches 20, the branch club can transition into its own chapter.

Clean Line Energy’s plans to build a wind power transmission line through Illinois and Iowa took another hit last week.

The Illinois Supreme Court on Thursday unanimously ruled that the Rock Island Clean Line project does not meet the state’s definition of a public utility. The decision upheld an August 2016 appellate court ruling that had reversed an earlier decision by the Illinois Commerce Commission.

The project route was to begin in Iowa’s O’Brien County, enter Illinois between Cordova and Port Byron, continue through Whiteside County, through the entire north edge of Bureau County, and end in Grundy County.

The project isn’t dead, but it would have do be done as a private venture.

Without public utility status, Clean Line won’t have the right to acquire property through eminent domain.

The Illinois Landowners Alliance, along with the Illinois Farm Bureau and ComEd, have been fighting the $1.8 billion project in court since plans began 7 years ago.

“We have firmly believed that Rock Island Clean Line does not qualify as a public utility and is absolutely not entitled to use the power of eminent domain,” ILA Executive Director Mary Mauch said in a news release. “Their foray into eminent domain for private gain has served to raise the public consciousness against these kinds of projects and unite communities to create strong opposition to them.”

Curt Jacobs, an ILA board member who farms land near the Whiteside and Henry county line, said the ruling was a victory for all Illinois landowners.

“The courts have affirmed the precise wording of the law, and have relieved a great amount of stress from all the landowners in the scope of this project,” Jacobs said.

Clean Line said the high court based its decision largely on the status of a purchase agreement for a converter station parcel. At the time of the company’s application to the ICC, Clean Line had an option to buy

the land instead of a fully exercised purchase agreement.

Hans Detweiler, vice president of Clean Line Energy Partners, said the company isn’t ready to pull the plug on the project, but having to restart the process will ultimately hurt consumers.

“This causes great delay for the project and will directly impact competition in electricity markets, resulting in fewer choices and higher prices for electricity,” Detweiler said in a news release. “It is unfortunate that Illinois now has higher barriers for new market entrants.”

Detweiler said he was encouraged that the court made it clear that they could reapply with the ICC at some point, and the ruling didn’t impact the authority of the regulatory body.

Earlier this year, Iowa effectively shut down the project in that state with legislation that prohibits “merchant transmission lines” from acquiring private property through eminent domain.

PRINCETON – The Bureau, Putnam and Marshall County Health Departments are seeking assistance from the public in locating birds to test for West Nile Virus before Sunday, Oct. 15.

The public is encouraged to help locate birds that may have died from the disease. Sick birds or birds that have been dead less than 12 hours may be eligible for testing. To qualify for testing, birds must meet these guidelines: • Birds must be dead less than 12 hours (fresh) and the carcass must not have obvious signs of trauma (struck by a vehicle, window or animal attack), decay or strong odor. Birds dying from WNV are usually found singly, scattered over a wide area.

In contrast, birds that die from other causes (storm mortality, food poisoning, toxicants) often die in groups or clusters.

• Only adults should handle dead birds. Pick

the bird up with gloves, tongs or a shovel. If you do not have gloves, insert your hand into a plastic bag like it is a glove, grasp the bird carefully and invert the bag over the bird. Each bird should be double-bagged in clear plastic bags.

• If the bird will not be submitted for testing, place the bagged bird in the trash or bury it away from water sources. After disposal of the bird, wash your hands with soap and water.

OBITUARIES&RECORDS BOLINGBROOK — Donald Andrew Nielsen, 58, of Bolingbrook, formerly of Lostant, passed away Sunday, Sept. 17, 2017, at Mercy Hospital in Springfield, Mo. He was born June 23, 1959, at St. Margaret’s Hospital in Spring Valley to Carl and Dolores (Kusnerik) Nielsen.

Survivors include his daughter, Amber Nielsen of Springfield, Mo.; a stepdaughter, Christina Talbot; his mother, Dolores Nielsen of Bradenton, Fla., formerly of Lostant; his sister, Barbara Nielsen of Bradenton, Fla.; his brother, William (Eileen) Nielsen of Altamonte Springs, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held Saturday, Sept. 23, at St. John the Baptist Church in Lostant with the Franciscan Friars officiating. Burial followed in St. John’s Cemetery in Lostant.

Visitation was held Friday, Sept. 22, at the Mueller Funeral Home in Lostant. Additional visitation was held Saturday at the church.

Tonica man arrested on three Class X felony warrants PERU — Tri-DENT drug task force along with the Peru Police Special Investigations Unit (SIU) conducted a traffic stop on a Tonica man wanted on three separate warrants in the area of Second and Putnam streets on Monday, Sept. 11.

Edgar Fellows combat toxicity in I Illinois politics F

ormer Illinois governor Jim Edgar (1991-98) has developed a bipartisan program for up-and-coming leaders in our state. It has the potential to take our politics from the gutter up toward constructive, problem-solving give and take.

The recent concord on state school funding, for example, a topic riven for years by regional and partisan rancor, may have resulted, in good part anyway, from bonds forged earlier in the Edgar Fellows Program.

Every summer since 2012, Edgar has gathered a new crop of 40 young mayors, fresh-faced state lawmakers and others for an intensive week-long crash course on how to get along and think about how to make Illinois better.

(Leadership programs, all valuable, are today so everywhere.

Yet, the Edgar Fellows Program is different, really different.)

“I wanted something that was diverse, bipartisan and drew people who were already committed and successfully involved in government and politics,” the moderate, one-time GOP governor told me recently. “People who are likely to make it big in Illinois.”

In a state where regional, partisan and economic differences are often razor sharp, Edgar’s focus is on getting people to work together.

“A lot of Chicagoans have never been south of I-80 (where three-quarters of Illinois lies),” Edgar, a downstate native, observes.

He recalls one Democratic city official exclaiming, only half in jest: “This is where I met my first Republican, and they’re not all bad.”

Edgar runs the program and is there for every minute of it. The Fellows are hosted at a University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign retreat setting, but the program relies on private fundraising to cover most of the $350,000 a year cost.

Forty Fellows are selected each year by an advisory committee for this by-nomination-only program. Readers of this column can nominate a local official, civic or business leader you think has the right stuff; send your nominations to sgrace@uillinois.edu.

Geographic and partisan balance are critical. Not every deserving nominee gets in. Some make it the second year.

The program has only been operating since 2012, yet already 52 Fellows are in or have made it to the state legislature (out of a total of 177 members in the House and Senate).

“My goal is that someday a Chicago mayor and Illinois governor will have met earlier, and bonded, as Fellows,” Edgar says.

That day may not be far off.

Three Fellows are running for governor next year, another is Cook County State’s Attorney and one is now in Congress.

UNDERSTANDING ILLINOIS Jim Nowlan jam-packed with substantive issues like infrastructure and health care; process, as in labor negotiating, and of course leadership skill development.

Although based at a major university, over the years the speaker roster has shifted largely from academics — “often too pedantic,” Edgar says — to practical experience and lessons learned from top political, civic and business leaders.

Fellows are always riveted, for example, when regular guest and former Obama chief of staff Bill Daley tells of his night in the White House situation room when the U.S. took out Osama bin Laden.

A tea-totaler, Edgar is nevertheless struck by the value to the bonding process when Fellows might slip away from their isolated retreat setting after a 14-hour day to hoist a few brews at a campus bar.

Back to school funding.

Small-town Democratic state senator Andy Manar, conservative downstate GOP senator Jason Barickman and Chicago Democratic, African-American state rep Christian Mitchell are all Edgar alums.

These three have also become leading students of our complex school funding. The trio were the keys to making the ground-breaking new school funding package reality.

“During the recent, intense tussle over school funding,” Barickman notes, “Christian, Andy and I debated and argued with one another publicly about school funding, but we did so on the substantive issues, not on the regional and partisan dimensions that often get in the way.”

Edgar wants the 240 Fellows thus far to keep building on connections forged at the U. of I., yet he hasn’t come up with a sureshot way to do so.

“Alumni” are invited a couple of times a year to activities in Chicago and Springfield, but attendance has been spottier than he had hoped. “These are busy, ambitious people,” Edgar notes.

It’s way too early to tell, and the centripetal forces that draw Illinois politicos into their own, narrow partisan and regional worlds are strong.

Even so, observers like Edgar as well as many Fellows I have talked with are rather amazed at how compelling the bonds forged via the Edgar Fellows Program have become.

Let’s hope the better angels of our nature play out from this program and contribute to transforming the way politics is done in Illinois. We could sure use it.

Aggressively nice

n listening to a presentation today about Tanzanian people, the term ‘aggressively nice’ was used. I almost died laughing (inside, since I was sitting in a church service and it seemed inappropriate to burst out laughing in the middle of nothing).

It reminded me of when my children were little and they’d hang on me, lay across me, muss my hair, try to kiss me, you know, like when I was trying to cook dinner or assemble something breakable. When I’d suggest they leave me alone, they’d turn on the big eyes, tilt their heads back and say, “But we love you, Mommy!” to which I’d reply, “Could you please love me less for a little bit?”

I know that doesn’t seem nurturing and motherly, but darn it, sometimes those little space invaders really got on my nerves. I had stuff to do.

They weren’t really doing anything wrong, and they were being nice, but they were being aggressively nice.

A lot of times, we think of the term aggressive as being mean, or surly, but it really can just mean persistent.

We all hate the aggressive car salesman who follows us around and won’t leave us alone, even though he has a smile on his face and seems willing to import elephants from China for you if you would only put down a small deposit on a brand new car

COMMENTARY Lori Boekeloo right now. He is nice. He wants to make a sale. He wants something from you and he will crack his face in half grinning from ear to ear to get what he wants.

Some people accuse us Christians of being in the same category as car salesman. We want you to know our God, and to join us in heaven, and we will be aggressively nice to you until you cave in and listen to our preaching. I can understand the lack of appeal of this approach. No one wants to be coerced into doing something they don’t want to do or enduring a situation they don’t want to endure, even if it is presented by the happiest Smurf on earth.

It is my opinion that the most effective Christians are the ones who just live their lives in a way that reflects their beliefs and people will be drawn to the benefits of the results of this type of living. I don’t think you need to preach in order to convince someone about the benefits of your chosen beliefs.

Be genuine. Be joyful.

Find the good in people and situations, and be sincere.

Do good. Be nice. When you are shouting enthusiastically

into the camera donning a plaid powder blue suit and a festive bow tie, hair slicked back with a hand full of VO-5 while proclaiming your low, low prices to the world, they will see right thru the charade.

All of that being said, anyone who knows me, knows my enthusiasm for everything I believe in, whether it be a product I’ve sold, a skill I’ve mastered, an organization I’ve supported or a hobby I’ve discovered. My challenge as a Christian, and a person, has been to tone it down. My mother always told me (in a calm voice), “Just because you’re the loudest, doesn’t mean you’re the rightest.”

I’ve tried to turn down my volume, enthusiasm (or overenthusiasm) and car salesman nature. I have tried very hard to live my life as an example of what God wants me to be and convey my message in that way, instead of being aggressively nice. But every once and a while, I still turn to the, “And that’s not all folks. If you act now, you will also receive ... grace.”

I sure hope it’s grace, because I need a lot of that.

The march of the millennials – out of Illinois

W

ith this time of year comes the sound of stretched packing tape and whimpering goodbyes, as students head off to college campuses. Boundless ambition and bittersweet pride mix with exhaust fumes as young folks motor away.

But there’s a problem here.

More and more often, those collegiate destinations are outside Illinois. And those college-bound millennials are not the only young people leaving the state.

One of the most important indicators of future growth is the inflow of young, hungry, educated talent. Lose it at your peril. Illinois is losing it.

Illinois lost as many as 37,000 millennials on net every year from 2011 through 2014 for a total net loss of as many as 148,000 millennials – including millennial taxpayers and their dependents and millennial college students – according to the most recent available data from the IRS and the National Center for Education Statistics.

In other words, a four-year period may have wrought a millennial exodus roughly the size of Rockford.

These are people who will

They’ll increasingly form the fabric of our communities.

But they’re being wooed elsewhere. And that’s hurting those who remain.

The U.S. Census Bureau tracks new housing permits as a key economic indicator.

Illinois was averaging more than 40,000 permits for new, single-family homes per year before the Great Recession.

But in 2016, the state issued just over 10,000 of those permits. That 75 percent nosedive is the worst in the nation.

A lack of young families – Illinois is the nation’s second-biggest net loser of both millennial taxpayers and their dependents, and millennial college students – might help explain this phenomenon.

But can you blame those who are leaving?

There’s little reason to plant roots in a barren economy.

Illinois is a national laggard in income growth and jobs growth. And the state’s massive debt is a yoke on the young who had no role in creating it.

Not to mention the student loan debt one often must take on to attend college in Illinois.

As Illinois’ higher education system diverts more and more dollars away from the classroom toward administrative coffers and pensions, in-state tuition at University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign was more expensive last year than any neighboring state’s flagship university – by far.

To be sure, Chicago can continue to draw young, white-collar professionals. But the numbers indicate that’s not enough to balance out thousands of millennial losses felt elsewhere.

Growth is golden. Illinois doesn’t have enough of it. State lawmakers, a few of whom are millennials themselves, need to start pushing pro-growth policies that have seen success in surrounding states.

The future depends on it.

NORMAL – The Putnam County Junior High Lady Pumas got back to Normal, reaching the IESA state softball tournament for a Class 1A record sixth time.

While the outcome was not what they would have liked, falling 8-1 to Heyworth in Friday’s 1A quarterfinals, coach Chris Walker was pleased to see the Lady Pumas reach the Elite Eight once again.

“The end result of this one game does not change the fact that this team matured and jelled as well as any I have had at junior high,” Walker said. “They played a predominately 2A schedule in the first half of the season and went 4-9. The second half of the season they were 12-2. I think that shows their growth as a team and for that effort. They’ll be rewarded with an Elite 8 sign in our outfield. That is a pretty impressive accomplishment.

The Lady Pumas got on the scoreboard first, pushing their only run across in the top of the first when Grace Ebel stretched out a double, took third on a wild pitcha and scored on a hit by Zofia Uzella.

Heyworth answered with three in the bottom of the first and extended its lead from there.

Jaidin Trone and Reise Zellmer also hit safely for PC. “We struck out 11 times and gave up eight walks. We generally don’t do either. We generally run the bases extremely well. The situation and the excitement of the game might have contributed to a couple of mental mistakes on our part,” Walker said.

Putnam County finished with a 16-11 record, having won its own sectional.

The Lady Pumas had reached 1A state tournament five previous times since 2008, topped by a state championship in 2009 and a state runner-up finish in 2014.

The Putnam County Lady Panthers traveled to Braidwood to compete in the Comet Classic at Reed-Custer High School.

They finished with a 1-2-2 overall record.

The Lady Panthers went 0-1-2 in pool play, losing to Cissna Park (12-21, 7-21) and splitting matches with Reed Custer (14-21, 21-17) and Clifton Central (11-21, 21-14).

They opened bracket play with a 25-17, 25-21 win over Bloom, but lost to Romeoville (13-25, 23-25) in the second round.

Madison Solomon had 55 assists on the day and also led the team in service points with 20 and eight aces.

Lindsey Diazdeleon led the Lady Panthers with 20 kills and 18 digs. She also had 12 service points and two aces.

Annual rummage sale set for Oct. 16-17 in Varna VARNA — Varna Women’s Club will hold its annual rummage sale from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday, Oct. 16, and from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday, Oct. 17, at the Varna Fire and Ambulance building located off of Route 17 on South Chestnut Street.

Saturday will be half price.

All proceeds will go to a scholarship for a Midland High School graduating senior, the Varna Fire and Ambulance, food pantries and other local charities.

The circus is coming to Granville on Friday GRANVILLE — The village of Granville is sponsoring another visit from the Kelly Miller Circus.

Performances will be held at 4:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 29,

on the grounds of Putnam County High School.

This year’s show will feature an elephant and a variety of other animals along with a cast of interna-

tional performers. The big top tent raising and a guided tour are a free show which will take place at 9 a.m. on the day of the performance and the public is invited.

UTICA

Hike for a Cure and Angel of Hope Fest set for Oct. 1 UTICA — Starved Rock Lodge and downtown Utica restaurants and merchants will be teaming up for two fundraising events on Sunday, Oct. 1.

“The purpose of both events is to celebrate breast cancer survivors, help those in the fight and remember those we’ve lost,” said Aimee Holland of the Relay for Life team that works with the Utica Business Association.

The Lodge will host “Hike for a Cure” from 9 to 11 a.m. There will be four guided hikes (9, 9:30, 10 and 10:30 a.m.) or participants may hike on their own. Once registered, each hiker will get a pink “Hike for a Cure” T-shirt and an engraved HOPE stone to carry with them as they depart from the Back

Door Lounge and hike to the top of Starved Rock and back to the Lodge.

A light breakfast will also be provided for participants.

The Utica Business Association, August Hill Winery and Relay for Life Team ‘Angels Among Us’’ will host the fourth annual Angel of Hope Fest from noon to 4 p.m. in downtown Utica.

Howard and the White Boys, a renowned Chicago Blues Band, will return this year to provide free musical entertainment, along with

live music from local acts. Food vendors and artisans will have booths along Mill Street. Local merchants and restaurants will also participate by offering drink specials and food. There will also be a 50/50 raffle.

During the month of October, Sunday through Thursday, Starved Rock Lodge will offer an overnight package called “Think Pink for the Cure.” This package includes an overnight stay for two guests, a $15 breakfast voucher, 1 1/2 pounds of pink fudge and a pink bucket that can be filled with Artisan ice cream from the Café or an adult lemonade shake-up from the Back Door Lounge. A portion of the proceeds will be added to the lodge’s donation to the American Cancer Society.

In the fall, multicolored Asian lady beetles gather in large numbers on the outside of light-colored houses. As they gather on the house, some find cracks or holes. They use these holes to get inside. Some lady beetles enter quiet places like the attic. They hibernate through the winter and be-come active again in spring.

Signs of an Asian Lady Beetle Infestation The most troubling sign of the multicolored Asian lady beetles is the mass appearance of large numbers of adults on and around buildings. This occurs during the fall with renewed activity on warm winter days and again in the spring. The larvae may be seen on plants or outdoor surfaces but, due to their radically different appearance from the adults, may not be recognized.

Control Measures - Getting Rid of Those Inside The first thing to do when dealing with ladybug beetles is to contact your pest management professional and request an inspection. Your pest management professional will correctly identify the pest insect(s) and pro-vide a plan for dealing with the problem.

Another effective and safe methods to deal with ladybug beetles are:Use a HEPA filter vacuum.Be sure to empty the vacuum bag after using it. Your pest management professional may apply the proper insecticides at the right time of the year to control ladybug beetles before they get inside your home.

Holmstrom-Esterdahl family reunion held WENONA — The 113th annual Holmstrom-Esterdahl family reunion was held Sept. 3 at the Wenona City Park, with 30 family and friends enjoying a potluck meal.

The favorite dishes were ham and scalloped potatoes made by Phyllis Holmstom Phillips and lasagna made

ecek. Family genealogy was shared by those present. Children’s activities were led by Pat Janecek.

Officers elected for next year are Rebecca Smith of Oak Lawn, president; Peggy Smith of Magnolia, vice president; Jan Schuster of McNabb, secretary; and Marcy Fry of Bloomington, treasurer.

The youngest present was Isobell Smith, the daughter of Andrew and Rebecca Smith of Oak Lawn. Most mature was Phyllls Phillips of Varna.

Next year’s reunion will be Sept. 2 at the Wenona City Park. Chris Schoepke and family will be in charge of shelter cleaning and table set up.

Seattle Sutton funds Illinois Valley Community College home health initiative OGLESBY — Seattle Sutton, founder of Seattle Sutton Healthy Eating, recently made a $10,000 donation to fund a home health initiative in Illinois Valley Community College’s nursing program.

Sutton’s gift will help pay for a home-like community area in nursing, said IVCC Director of Nursing Julie Hogue.

“With health care trending toward outpatient and home settings, we will transform an area near the nursing labs into a hometype setting to include a living area complete with a twin bed, bedside table and lamp, an armchair and

a small table and chairs,” said Hogue.

“Faculty will use the space to teach students how to do one-on-one patient education over that small table, just like they would in a home.

Demonstrating proper procedure for giving an insulin injection or transferring a patient to a bed is very different in a home than it is in the clinical setting or lab,” she said.

In addition, Sutton’s gift will allow IVCC to move its mental health curriculum toward a community based application, versus institutional. Other possible uses for the space

include prevention screenings, chronic health care, hospice care, transitional care and the ability to determine when it is time for home care to transition into acute care.

In 2014, Sutton donated $10,000 to the program for instructional equipment.

“It is remarkable what Seattle has accomplished as a businesswoman and philanthropist,” said IVCC President Jerry Corcoran.

“She is a former practicing nurse and nursing instructor and remains a fervent advocate for the profession. Her gift will enhance an already strong program.”

4-H clubs invite children to be new members may join 4-H clubs, coordinated by local certified adult volunteers. Each club decides how often it meets, the location of its meetings and the activities held during the meeting. Members may select from over 100 different project areas to study while they build leadership, teamwork, cooperation, decision-making and communication skills.

Festival 56 gets ready for its 2018 season PRINCETON – Changes are in the air as Festival 56 prepares for its 2018 season of live professional theater.

Shannon Hill, who first came to Festival 56 as an actor in 2014, and has served as artistic director for the last two years, has stepped down from that position. Among her many achievements in the 2017 season was serving as director for “The Comedy of Errors,” which, after a full summer run as the Festival’s free Shakespeare in Soldiers and Sailors Park, still drew 200 people to its final performance.

“I want to thank the Princeton community, the Princeton Theatre Group Board, and my fellow artists for an amazing two years,” said Hill. “I can’t wait to see how the Festival grows in the years ahead.”

Laura Brigham, who has been the Festival’s casting director from the very beginning, has been hired to serve as interim artistic director. She has already begun fine-tuning the 2018 summer season schedule and hiring the individual show directors and technical department heads.

Brigham is well known to Festival patrons as an actor, director and a partner with her husband, Dexter Brigham, in starting Festival 56 in 2004.

Princeton Theatre Group (PTG), the non-profit organization that governs Festival 56, will also see some changes.

Maureen Droessler, who has served as PTG president for many years, is stepping down from that role.

“It has been my honor to represent the board and work closely with Festival 56 patrons, donors and the community,” Droessler said. “As a team, this board has made great strides in developing support for the arts in our area.”

Board member Liana Hall has been elected the new PTG president.

“Festival 56 has been a staple in our community for a decade and a half, and I consider it a privilege to be trusted to lead

Joining the Taylors at a recent NIU accountancy department reception are scholars Jacob Bonnell of Ohio (left), Bethany Dovin of Grand Ridge, Edgar Lucero Castillo of LaSalle and Mario Cortes Sandoval of Mendota. Each year, the award pays full tuition for an IVCC student transferring to NIU in accounting. On occasion, the Taylors make available partial tuition scholarships to other IVCC accounting candidates at NIU not chosen for the full-tuition award. The full-tuition grant is worth up to $25,000 over the student’s junior and senior years. The Taylors also fund a scholarship for IVCC students transferring to NIU in STEM-related fields. Bailey Bradish of Ottawa and Aubry Molln of LaMoille are the current STEM scholars at NIU. Additionally, the Taylors donate $12,500 annually for 10 scholarships for current IVCC students.

‘I on Diabetes’ classes will focus on the holidays OGLESBY — The University of Illinois Extension will offer its healthy holidays “I on Diabetes” classes from 5:30 to 8 p.m.

Illinois Press Foundation announces $5,000 grant opportunity for Illinois journalism programs SPRINGFIELD — The Illinois Press Foundation has announced a $5,000 grant, for which Illinois high school and college journalism programs are eligible. This grant will reward the program that locates the most missing photos of Vietnam veterans for the foundation’s Wall of Faces effort.

When the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C., was finished in 1983, the wall listed about 58,000 servicemen and women who had either died in action or went missing in action during the war. Due to a fire at a government storage facility in 1973, the U.S. military lost millions of personnel records, including records for many of those who were listed on the wall. While the military and other organizations made efforts to recover the lost data, 24,000 veterans listed on the wall still had no picture in military records in 2013.

In January of this year, the Illi-

nois Press Association/Foundation launched a coordinated effort among Illinois newspapers to recover the 579 missing Illinois Vietnam veterans’ photos. Since then, Illinois newspapers have worked with their communities and readers to locate 153 of the missing photos, and tell the stories of these no-longer faceless veterans.

Thirty-eight Illinois counties are home to the remaining 426 veterans without photos; however, the bulk of the missing photos, 323, are from Cook County.

With this grant, the IPF hopes to enhance the research skills of student journalists, honor Illinois veterans by locating the remaining missing photos, and provide valuable operating funds to the winning journalism program. Journalism programs can get started by following these steps: Go to www.vvmf.org/Wall-of-Faces/ and click advanced search (to the right of the search box), input the city and

state, scroll to the last box and check “Does not have a photo” then hit submit.

The search results yield a list of veterans from the specified location that are missing photos in their personnel files. Local newspapers, school yearbooks and church directories have proven useful sources for locating missing photos.

Once an image has been located, submit it directly to Foundation Director Kate Richardson so the school may be recorded as locating the photo. Send images as JPEGs to krichardson@illinoispress.org.

Grant funds will be awarded to the program that locates the most missing photos from Illinois. Funds will be issued when all the photos in Cook County have been located.

The IPA’s goal for finding all the missing photos is Veteran’s Day, Nov. 11.

University booths will open at 5:30 p.m. followed by the IVCC ag open house at 6 p.m. and university ag representatives will discuss

their programs at 7 p.m.

The event includes campus tours, a chance to meet IVCC ag instructors and current ag students.

Dan Fitzgerald named Horizon House’s CEO PERU — On Sept. 3, Dan Fitzgerald was named chief executive officer of Horizon House.

He is filling the position that was vacated when Jim Monterastelli retired on July 12 after serving as CEO for 38 years.

Jeff Borelli, president of Horizon House’s Board of Directors, announced, “We are very fortunate to have someone with such vast experience, knowledge and commitment to promote into this position. We are confident that Dan will excel as CEO.” Fitzgerald was hired in 1981 as a case services coordinator for Horizon House. In 1989, the agency

underwent an administrative reorganization and he stepped into the newly-created position of director of programs and services.

During his 28-year tenure in that position, he oversaw all program functions of the agency including overseeing the ongoing national accreditation of the agency’s services.

As a result, Fitzgerald also served as a program surveyor/consultant for the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF) for eight years, completing surveys in 17 states and Canada.

He has a strong interest in promoting self-advocacy for people with disabilities and

OGLESBY — The Dec. 31 retirement of Jeanne Hayden, executive assistant to the president, affiliated with Illinois Valley Community College for more than three decades, was announced by IVCC President Jerry Corcoran at the Sept. 14 board meeting.

An IVCC graduate, Hayden was selected executive assistant and named secretary to the board when president Jean Goodnow arrived in 1996. She was also the executive assistant to president Larry Huffman, interim presidents Chuck Novak and Dave Louis, and has worked alongside Corcoran the past nine years.

Illinois residents encouraged to register for ‘The Great ShakeOut’ earthquake drill earthquake. The drill takes only a few minutes, but the lessons learned could save your life.”

The Great ShakeOut drill centers around the drop, cover and hold on actions: drop down to the ground, take cover under a table or other piece of heavy furniture, and then hold on until the shaking stops.

In October 2016, nearly 500,000 Illinoisans took part in the ShakeOut drill. To date, more than 300,000 people in Illinois are registered for this year’s event.

Some of the most powerful earthquakes to ever occur in the U.S. happened in the winter of 1811-12 in the New Madrid Seismic Zone, which reaches into southwestern Illinois.

That series of earthquakes lasted for several months and shaking was felt as far

Located in northeastern Illinois, Mazon Creek is an incredible fossil array of associated Upper Carboniferous plants and animals. Considered to be among the world’s great Lagerstätten, or Mother Lodes, this site’s numerous and delicately preserved soft-bodied animals are rarely seen in the fossil record, and many species have been singularly described from the deposit. Magnificent plant impressions, many of them ferns (to some, the quintessential prehistoric floral form) are beautifully preserved in iron carbonate nodules.

The importance of Mazon Creek to understanding

the story of our planet, and specifically the Pennsylvanian Period, was realized by science only in the mid-19th century.

Considerable research has been done since then, perhaps providing the most comprehensive picture of life in the Late Paleozoic.

Young is a visual artist who studied biology, art history and studio art at the University of California, Berkeley. In 2006, he received an invitation to join an expedition to Antarctica to study the wildlife and document studies of the earthquakes and ice movement in the region.

A continued fascination with the human relationship to the natural world led him to curate an exhibition in 2011 titled, Indexing the World: invention, abstraction and dissonance, the 2012 publication of a book on Mazon Creek fossils of Illinois, and a solo painting show with the Chicago Academy of Sciences.
