dcook@putnamcountyrecord.com HENNEPIN — Richard A. Henderson, accused of the January killing of a Bureau County teen, announced in court on Sept. 13 that he has decided to waive his right to a jury trial.

He will instead face the decision of a lone judge during his trial, which is scheduled to begin Dec. 17.

Henderson, 26, of Standard, is charged with three counts of murder for the death of 16-year-old Diamond Bradley of Spring Valley. She was last seen by her family on Jan. 23, was reported missing the next day, and was found stabbed to death alongside a rural Putnam County road on Jan. 27.

Henderson was taken into custody on Feb. 5 after investigators linked him to Bradley through interviews, surveillance footage,

and cell phone data.

During Thursday’s status hearing in Putnam County Court, Judge Stephen A. Kouri asked Henderson whether he understood the constitutional right he was waiving; that he wouldn’t be able to reverse the decision; and that he might also end up facing a different judge.

“Yes, sir,” Henderson answered.

The prosecution and defense agreed on a deadline of Oct. 15 to file motions. They also scheduled a Nov. 1 status hearing and a Nov. 15 motions hearing.

Public defender Roger Bolin said after the hearing that he felt having a bench trial was appropriate considering the case, but he wouldn’t elaborate.

Putnam County State’s Attorney Christina Judd-Mennie said the prosecution was well prepared for either a bench or jury trial and that there’s “an abundance of evidence.”

She also expects the trial to last only three to four days.

Henderson was initially charged with concealment of a homicidal death, a Class 3 felony with a sentencing range of two to five years.

However, Bolin successfully got that charge dropped during a Sept. 6 status hearing.

Bolin argued the 120-day limit of the Speedy Trial Act has been exceeded, and Judd-Mennie agreed to drop the charge to focus on the murder charges.

The three additional first-degree murder charges were entered on Aug. 30, and each carries concurrent $1 million bonds with 10 percent to apply.

If convicted, Henderson faces 20 years to life in prison with each felony charge, and would have to serve 100 percent of his sentence.

Henderson previously entered pleas of not guilty on all counts.

County enters suit against opiod makers Contract stipulates no cost unless suit provides an award

BY DAVE COOK news@putnamcountyrecord.com HENNEPIN — Putnam County has joined a long list of communities who have agreed to enter the legal fight to hold pharmaceutical companies responsible for their marketing of prescription opioids and the nationwide addiction epidemic it helped to create.

Attorney Pat Herrmann, of Peru’s Meyers, Flowers, Bruno & Herrmann law firm, and the former Bureau County state’s attorney, attended the Sept. 10 Putnam County Board meeting to hear the county’s decision about joining the lawsuit.

“Opioid producers put out these drugs with their own literature and

statute of limitations, so the county would be able to be reimbursed only for opioid-related costs from two years prior to signing the contract.

Putnam County State’s Attorney Christina Judd-Mennie told the board she had reviewed the contract and was in support if the board voted to approve it and enter the suit.

Funds that could be reimbursed to the county include the varied expenses of law enforcement, emergency responders and death investigators who have responded to overdose or other opioid-related cases.

“Over time, doctors began to notice the Patrick addictive effects and Herrmann questioned them, but were told ‘No, they’re OK,’” he said.

Herrmann said this led to many different losses for many people, as well as to creating significant expenses for counties. The challenge, he said, would be in proving the link between prescription medication abuse and the damage caused by a heroin addiction or overdose years later.

The lawsuit, based in Cook County, includes several other communities and counties, including Bureau County. There will be no cost unless there’s an award that exceeds the legal costs or if the county withdraws from the suit. Attorney fees will be 25 percent of an award.

The construction of the county’s new salt shed is well underway and should be completed soon.

• Jim Burger, county zoning officer, reported he conducted 16 inspections in August.

• The county passed the resolutions for shared dispatch costs and the execution of two deeds of conveyance.

• The board approved the dates for budget meetings on Sept. 17 and 24, and Oct. 1,15, 22 and 29. All meetings will be at 5:30 p.m., and the board expects to approve the budget for the next fiscal year by November.

Shaw Media STREATOR — The House Republican Organization has announced it will withdraw its support of state Rep. Jerry Long, R-Streator, in his bid for re-election.

The GOP organization also is asking Long to step down from his position after a complaint was lodged regarding verbal and physical harassment, but Long appears to be willing to continue his term from a statement issued Sept. 13.

Long is facing Democratic challenger Lance Yednock for the 76th District House seat. The seat, once long held by Democrat Frank Mautino of Spring Valley, is considered a battleground for the two parties.

Long defeated Andy Skoog, who succeeded Mautino, in November 2016 with 50.6 percent of the vote.

“Over Labor Day weekend, the House Republican Organization was made aware of allegations into Rep.

Long’s behavior,” said Eleni Demertzis, Office of the House Republican Leader Jim Durkin in a press statement. “ We immediately brought in a third State Rep. party firm to investiJerry Long gate these allegations, R-Streator and upon completion of their report on Sept.

12, a decision was made to withdraw support of Rep. Long’s campaign, restrict access to all caucus resources, and recommend he step down from his position.”

The complainant issued a statement on Sept. 14.

“Rep. Long’s denial of his actions and behavior are troubling and disappointing.

“While there was an incident of physical harassment, the verbal abuse and abuse of power on a daily basis resulted in a hostile work environment that put anyone around him at risk.

It is my sincere hope that Rep. Long resigns from his position and gets the help that he needs.”

Long told WCMY 1430 radio in Ottawa that “he can be demanding,” due to the nature of the campaign being high pressure and high paced.

Demertzis said the House Republican caucus and organization “has a zero tolerance policy on harassment of any kind.”

The House Republican Organization has given $37,674.98 to Long in his bid for re-election and the House

Victory Fund $5,000, according to filings with the Illinois State Board of Elections. The last contribution recorded was from Aug. 30. The Illinois Republican Party also has given $86,348.80 to Long with its latest contribution recorded Sept. 7.

If Long resigns or drops out of the race, the ballot vacancy for the November election must be filled within eight days. The party can replace a candidate who drops out up to 16 days before an election, according to Matt Dietrich, Public Information Officer for the Illinois State Board of Elections.

In July, Long appeared with Gov. Bruce Rauner in Ottawa to sign the “People’s Pledge,” which is term-limit pledges the governor is advocating for in his campaign.

Rep. Long represents the 76th House District, which in this area includes all of Putnam County, much of LaSalle County, and five townships in southeastern Bureau County.

SPRINGFIELD — Gov. Bruce Rauner has declared a harvest emergency to help level the playing field between Illinois farmers and crop haulers and those in neighboring states.

The action bridges the gap between the 2018 harvest season and a new law the governor signed Aug. 25 that takes effect next year.

Going forward, the measure allows for an annual harvest-season easing of gross vehicle and gross axle weight limits for agricultural commodities haulers with a free permit, according to a press release.

“We have heard from Illinois’ trucking industry and from farmers who are operating on thin profit margins in today’s agricultural climate,” Rauner said before making his announcement at the Ladage

Farm in Auburn. “ To d ay ’s h a r ve s t emergency declaration recognizes that the weight-restriction structure in place in Illinois puts our farmGov. Bruce ers and truckers at a disadvantage.

Rauner “They cannot and should not be forced to wait until the 2019 harvest season to reap the economic benefits of eased weight limits,” he said.

The emergency declaration is in effect from Monday, Sept. 10, to Dec. 31, 2018, and enables crop haulers to seek free Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) permits to exceed legal maximum gross vehicle and gross axle weight limits or the vehicle’s registered gross weight, whichever is less, by no more than 10 percent on state and federal highways under IDOT’s jurisdiction, except interstates.

Heavier harvest trucks bring additional stress to roads There is a downside to increased weight limits — the additional stress on local roads and an already underfunded highway budget.

In regard to the state’s road system, IDOT noted in a 2017 press release, “The rate of deterioration far exceeds the available funding to improve the system to acceptable conditions.”

Putnam County Highway Engineer Pat Sloan said the raised limit will shorten the lifespan of a road and could increase damage. Roads are designed for the stress of normally loaded trucks, which cause the equivalent impact of approximately 3,000 cars.

“The increased loading allowed by this declaration will increase the trucks’ impact. It’s definitely not worth it for the counties and townships because we’re not receiving any additional funding to deal with increased maintenance costs.” he said.

During a 2017 Putnam County Board meeting, Sloan reported the state budget would result in a 50 percent reduction in local road maintenance projects and that 89 percent of the state’s roads are maintained by counties, townships or municipalities.

Local governments saw a decrease in revenue generated through the Motor Fuel Tax, as well an additional loss of revenue through the transfer of $300 million from the state’s General Fund to IDOT, which in turn cut local road payments by $50 million.

In 2017, Sloan said there were 14 miles of road reconstruction projects in the county estimated to cost $3 million. The county’s three bridges were also classified as being in poor condition and would require $2.5 million.

“During the last 15 years, our purchasing power has decreased by more than 60 percent, meaning that counting both the decreased share of revenue and its decreased purchasing power, we can only do a fifth of what we did in 2000,” he said.

More Chinese students on the way OGLESBY — Illinois Valley Community College will welcome more Chinese students this spring as part of an agreement approved Sept. 13 by the board.

Trustees endorsed a dual credit and English as Second Language program with Foreign Service (China) Group of Hong Kong beginning with the start of spring classes on Jan. 9.

Although the college expects only a handful of students to participate in the program the first year, Yang Hong, Foreign Service CEO, anticipates more to follow with the potential of 20 per year moving forward.

Ideally, an IVCC teaching center will be established at Streator’s Sherman School, now owned

by Foreign Service, to serve both international and local American students. Foreign Service purchased Sherman School for a teacher training facility.

IVCC President Jerry Corcoran said the agreement would provide “scholarly interaction, cultural interchange and other forms of academic collaboration.

“The timing for this partnership is perfect,” he said, adding, “We are excited to see what develops.”

Contracts ratified, pay increases win approval by board of trustees OGLESBY — Following closed session on Sept. 13, the Illinois Valley Community College board ratified new contracts with full-time faculty and service employees and pay increases for employees not affected by a labor agreement.

The three-year contract with the American Federation of Teachers Local 1810 calls for average pay increases of 2.65 percent this year, 2.66 percent for fiscal 2020 and 2.72 percent for 2021.

The salary schedule will remain the same, however, Step 1 will be eliminated, resulting in starting wage increases each year. The contract provides administrators greater flexibility in the scheduling of classes, thus minimizing overload, IVCC President Jerry Corcoran said.

Summer pay/overload will increase 7.8 percent over the term of the contract and compensation for lab and clinical instruction will increase 5 percent. Custodial and maintenance staff represented by Service Employees International Union Local 138 will receive salary increases of 2.5 percent a year over their four-year contract.

Employees not affected by labor agreements, including support staff and administration, at levels 5, 6 and 7 will receive a 2.65 percent increase and all others will receive 2.5 percent. Seven employees were given “special salary adjustments” this year after being “identified as warranting such an increase.”

“We appreciate Gov. Rauner declaring an emergency situation for the 2018 harvest season, especially in light of the declining incomes and market turmoil which farmers are currently facing,” said Richard Guebert Jr., president of the Illinois Farm Bureau.

“This declaration opens the door for increased efficiencies for farmers and truck drivers hauling agricultural commodities and will help offset any uncontrollable effects of weather and commodity markets, allowing farmers the freedom to move what is projected to be a record-breaking crop.”

Rauner said the declaration will speed the movement of crops to market, adding the importance of an economically healthy agriculture community in Illinois cannot be overstated.

Illinois is home to 71,000 farms on 26.6 million acres. Marketing of Illinois’ agricultural commodities generates more than $19 billion a year, and the state’s food and fiber industries employ nearly 1 million people. The state ranks third nationally in the export of agricultural commodities, with $8.2 billion worth of goods shipped to other countries, according to the Illinois Department of Agriculture.

“Our farmers feed the world, working tirelessly every harvest season to get their crops from the field to market as quickly as possible,” said Illinois Department of Agriculture Director Raymond Poe. “We need to give Illinois farm families every advantage we can to ensure they stay competitive with farmers in neighboring states.”

Tentative multiplier is ‘one’ to remember Revenue Dept. declares 1.0000 is the number SPRINGFIELD — Putnam County has been issued a tentative property assessment equalization factor of 1.0000, according to Constance Beard, director of the Illinois Department of Revenue.

The property assessment equalization factor, often called the “multiplier,” is the method used to achieve unifor m property assessments among counties, as required by law.

This equalization is important because some of the state’s 6,600 local taxing districts overlap into two or more counties (e.g. school districts, junior college districts, fire protection districts). If there were no equalization among counties, substantial inequities among taxpayers with comparable properties would result.

State law requires property in Illinois to be assessed at one-third of its market value. Farm property is assessed differently, with farm homesites and dwellings subject to regular assessing and equalization procedures, but with farmland and farm buildings assessed according to standards based on productivity.

The equalization factor is determined each year for each county by comparing the sales price of individual properties sold over the past three years to the assessed value placed on those properties by the county supervisor of assessments or county assessor.

If this three-year average level of assessment is one-third of market value, the equalization factor will be one (1). If the average level of assessment is greater than one-third

of market value, the equalization factor will be less than one (1). And if the average level of assessment is less than one-third of market value, the equalization factor will be greater than one (1).

Assessments in Putnam County are at 33.18 percent of market value, based on sales of properties in 2015, 2016 and 2017.

The equalization factor currently being assigned is for 2018 taxes, payable in 2019. Last year’s equalization factor for the county was also 1.0000.

The tentative factor is subject to change: 1) If the County Board of Review takes actions which significantly affect the county assessments; or 2) If local officials or others can present data showing that the Department of Revenue’s estimates of the average level of assessments in the county should be adjusted.

A public hearing on the tentative multiplier will be held between 20 and 30 days after the tentative factor is published in a newspaper of general circulation within the county.

A change in the equalization factor does not mean total property tax bills will increase or decrease. Tax bills are determined by local taxing bodies when they request money each year to provide services to local citizens.

If the amount requested by local taxing districts is not greater than the amount received in the previous year, then total property taxes will not increase even if assessments may have increased.

The assessed value of an individual property determines what portion of the tax burden a specific taxpayer will assume. That individual’s portion of tax responsibility is not changed by the multiplier.

IN BRIEF Soil and Water District adopts policy on addressing the board HENRY — The Marshall-Putnam Soil and Water Conservation District Board meetings are open to the public, as the district is a tax-supported body.

Visitors who wish to address the board of directors at a board meeting may do so, provided a request is submitted in writing 48 hours prior to the meeting, so that they may be added to the agenda.

The speaker must then observe a 10-minute time limit. The moderator may allow additional time.

This policy was adopted by the Marshall-Putnam Soil and Water Conservation District Board of Directors on July 12.

PATRICIA WILSON BEAVERTON, Ore. — Pat Wilson, 90, formerly of McNabb, peacefully passed away in Beaverton, Oregon, on July 9, 2018, surrounded by her family.

Pat was born May 29, 1928, in Rock Island County to Emilie and Paul Feaster. Raised on the family farm, Pat attended the University of Illinois where she lived at the 4-H House in Urbana. As a member of the 4-H House, Pat served as house officer and made many lifetime friends.

She served on the Board of Directors of what was then the recently constructed Illini Union. Majoring in home economics, she graduated with honors from the University of Illinois in 1951.

At the University of Illinois, Pat met Clarence Wilson of McNabb, who lived at the Farmhouse Fraternity a few blocks from the 4-H House. After graduation, she married Clarence and they began their married life on the family farm near McNabb. Pat taught home economics and English in the local schools while raising a family.

She was very active in the McNabb United Methodist Church. Pat moved

to the Portland, Ore., area in the late 1970s to be near her daughters. She placed special value in her strong Christian faith and family. Pat was a talented artist and an excellent cook.

She is survived by her three children: Reed (Sydney) Wilson of McNabb, Sue Harris of Malaga, Wash., and Pam (David) Wilson of Beaverton, Ore. She is also survived by six grandchildren, Laura Wilson, Loralee Wilson, Tori Rasmussen, Taryn Harris, Trace Harris, and Benjamin Long. During her later years, Pat especially enjoyed her great-grandchildren, Racer and Colton Rasmussen of Spokane, Wash.

Pat was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Dale Feaster.

A memorial service for Pat will be held at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 23, 2018, in the McNabb United Methodist Church followed by internment in the Friends Cemetery in McNabb.

Memorials encouraging her involvement in education may be made to the Putnam County Educational Foundation.

PAMELA WHEATLEY STANDARD — Pamela Ann Wheatley, 69, of Standard, formerly of Wyanet, passed away Sunday, Sept. 3, 2018, in St. Anthony’s Medical Center in Rockford.

Visitation was held from 5 to 8 p.m.

GRANVILLE — Erma G. Costello, 88, of Granville passed away on Sunday, Sept. 9, 2018, in LaSalle.

Born July 15, 1930, to John and Bertha (Cox) Cherry, she married Frank R. Costello in 1967.

She graduated from Hall High School. She was an assembler in the wristwatch department at Westclox and a homemaker.

She was a member of Eastern Star, the Granville American Legion Auxiliary and the United Church of Christ in Spring Valley.

Survivors include one son, Art Shipp of Spring Valley; two daughters, Carol (Shipp) Hill of Granville and Valerie (Shipp) Bruce of Raleigh, N.C.; one sister, Alice (Cherry) Lamagno of Florida; five grandchildren, Shannon Hogan of LaSalle, Christy DeGroot of Spring Valley, Sarah Kester of Rochester, Minn., Jeffery Bruce of Syracuse, N.Y., and Melanie Bruce of Raleigh, N.C.; eight great-grandchildren; and one great-great grandson.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband in 2002; one sister, Bernice Taylor; and two brothers, Lester Wallin and John Cherry.

A Celebration of Life was held at 5 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 15, at Servant’s Heart Fellowship, 1119 Eighth St., LaSalle, with Pastor Michael and Robin Shaver officiating. Cremation rites have been accorded. Visitation was prior to the service, from 3 to 5 p.m., at Servant’s Heart Fellowship.

HENNEPIN — Nora B. (Van Cleave) Brandstatter, 88, of Hennepin passed away Thursday, Sept. 13, 2018, at Perry Memorial Hospital in Princeton after a brief illness.

Nora was born Oct. 21, 1929, in Bureau to John H. and Mary Jo (Lucas) Van Cleave and graduated from Princeton High School. She married John D. “Jack” Brandstatter on Feb. 3, 1952. They had five children, sons John (Chris) of Pueblo West, Colo., William (Vonna) of Vienna, Ill., and Rodger (Diana) of Hennepin; daughter Linda (William) Browning of Conifer, Colo.; daughter-in-law, Loretta Jean of Granville; 13 grandchildren, and 12 great-grandchildren. Survivors also include her sister Mary Katherine Spayer of DePue and many nieces and nephews.

Nora was a wonderful singer, lending her talents as soloist to many area weddings as well as church choirs, Sweet Adelines, and Harmonaires. She also was a capable partner in the family plumbing and heating business, running the hardware store and doing the books in addition to helping restore and remodel the historic former Cecil Hotel as the family

home and apartments. In later years Jack and Nora enjoyed escaping to south Texas for the winters, where Nora also sang in and later directed the choir for Sunday services. She loved preparing and sharing big family dinners and was famous for her delicious pot roast, butterhorn rolls, and pies.

She was preceded in death by her husband on July 25, 2008; one son, Ronald; one grandson, Marty; one brother, Lawrence, and two sisters, Lucille and Myrtle Mae. Services were held at 10 a.m. Monday, Sept.

17, at the United Church of Christ in Granville where she was a member, with the Rev. Ron McNeill officiating. Burial was in Riverside Cemetery, Hennepin. Visitation was held from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 16, at Dysart-Cofoid Funeral Chapel in Granville.

Memorials may be directed to the United Church of Christ in Granville or other organizations of the donor’s choice.

IVSO opens season with family pops concert OGLESBY — The Illinois Valley Symphony Orchestra invites everyone to join Maestro Danko Drusko, along with Los Angeles-based mezzo-soprano Ameena Maria Khawaja, for “An Evening of Disney Magic & Movies” at 7 p.m.

Saturday, Sept. 22, at the IVCC Dr. Mary Weeg Cultural Centre. The concert will feature music from “The Lord of the Rings,” “Pirates of the Caribbean,” “Wicked,” “Pocahontas,” “The Little Mermaid,” “Frozen” and “Themes from 007,” as well as many surprises, including music from memorable Hollywood movies.

Guest Conductor Drusko was born in Germany and is currently visiting Assistant Professor and Director of Orchestra and Opera at Northern Illinois University School of Music.

He is founder and music director of the Hoosier Philharmonic and previously held the position of associate instructor at Indiana University Jacobs School of Music Opera and Ballet Theatre. He has conducted professional, university and youth orchestras throughout Europe and North America, including the Frankfort Radio Symphony, Frankfort Opera, Metropolitan Opera, Lisbon, Rochester Philharmonic, New York Symphony, Youth Orchestra of Los Angeles, and the Staatliche Hochschule für Musik in Trossingen, Germany. Along with his work as a professional trumpet player in symphonies and pit orchestras in Germany, he also enjoyed performing as a tenor in several operas and toured with orchestras in Spain, Italy, Denmark, Poland and the United

States. He has a Doctorate of Musical Arts degree in Orchestral Conducting from Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University.

Khawaja is a Los Angeles-based cellist and mezzo-soprano. She holds a degree in cello performance from Cal State University, and studied vocal performance at the Hochschule für Musik in Trossingen, Germany. As a cellist, she has worked on numerous studio recordings and live performances, and was recently seen playing with Kamasi Washington at Walt Disney Concert Hall and Jeff Lynne’s Electric Light Orchestra in New York and Los Angeles. Other artists with whom she has collaborated include: Paul Anka, Sia, Mary J. Blige, Mandy Moore, Spacehog, Marc Anthony, Linda Perry, Switchfoot, Delta Goodrem, Rain Phoenix, Marco Antonio Solís, Trans Siberian Orchestra and many more. She has had the opportunity to perform live at the Grammy Awards, as well as on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, NBC’s The Voice, American Idol and The Jimmy Kimmel Show. She is a teaching artist for the Los Angeles Philharmonic, The Harmony Project and the cello instructor for YOLA (Youth Orchestra Los Angeles) at EXPO, whom she coached for their recent performance with Coldplay at the Super Bowl 50 Halftime Show. She has also coached for the Pasadena Youth Symphony Orchestra Philharmonic and is a staff cellist and vocalist for the Pacific Crest Music Festival.

HENRY — Upon learning that very little printed information exists about area Potowatomi Chief Senachwine, the Chief Senachwine NSDAR Chapter donated

a collection of materials to Putnam County Public Library District Director Jay Kalman on Sept.

Containing information devoted

to their chapter namesake, the book includes primary source materials, secondary sources, items from a private collection, and writings on his life and family, shared by Gary Wiskigeamatyuk, the great-great-great-great-grandson of Chief Senachwine.

Among the more interesting pages is one showing the War Club of Chief Senachwine, preserved by his family through six generations. Gary Wiskigeamatyuk is a performer of the Native American hoop dance at Knott’s Berry Farm

in California and is also a Native American story-teller and teacher.

Chief Senachwine is buried on private land north of the town of Putnam. During his chiefdom his influence was felt throughout the Illinois River area of Marshall and Putnam counties. He spoke against his tribesmen joining the Black Hawk War in 1832 and preserved peace in the area for Indians and settlers alike.

One of the books will be placed in the Hennepin Library and one in the Condit Library in Putnam.

St. Margaret’s Foundation Committee announces Stanmar Scholarship winner SPRING VALLEY — The winning applicant for this year’s $1,000 Dr. Margaret Stanmar Scholarship was recently chosen by St. Margaret’s Foundation Scholarship Committee.

Gracyn Tabor of Oglesby has been accepted to the University of Wisconsin-Madison, University of Iowa, University of Illinois and University of Minnesota-Twin Cities, with the ultimate goal of becoming physician with a focus in neurology.

Tabor is a 2018 graduate of Ottawa Township High School and attended Illinois Valley Community College the summer of 2017. An all-conference academic honors student at Ottawa High School, she was an active member of the volleyball team, soccer team, Jazz Band, Rotary-Interact Club, Freshman Mentoring DoChange Program working with underclassmen and is a part of the National Honors Society. During her time at Ottawa Township High School, she was awarded the Daughters of the American Revolution Good Citizen Award (2017), Illinois State Scholar (2017-2018), Ottawa Sunrise Rotary Student of the Month

(December 2017), OTHS Foundation Science Student of the Month (Janurary 2018) and All-Conference Academic Honors (2016-2018). Outside of school, she has been involved with numerous community service organizations, such as the S.E.E.D Catholic Youth Group and a TAGs volunteer at OSF Saint Elizabeth Medical Center in Ottawa. She is the daughter of Marc and Kathleen Tabor and has an older brother.

Dr. Margaret Stanmar graduated as an MD from The Chicago Medical School in Chicago in 1943. She was one of four other females in her class to earn a medical degree at that time. She opened her practice in LaSalle and practiced in the field of OB/general practice. A longtime physician in the Illinois Valley area, Dr. Stanmar joined the St. Margaret’s staff in late 1975 and continued to practice in LaSalle and on staff at St. Margaret’s until her passing on Aug. 9, 1997.

Chapter hosts Chief Senachwine Recognition Day HENRY — The Chief Senachwine Chapter NSDAR recognized the contributions of Potawatomi Chief Senachwine at a special ceremony on Sept. 7 held at the First Presbyterian Church in Henry, relocated from Senachwine’s gravesite due to rain. Also participating in the ceremony were uniformed members of the Capt. Zeally Moss Chapter, Peoria, of the National Society Sons of the American Revolution and their wives in colonial dress.

A Native American flute call, played by Chapter Regent Nancy Gillfillan, began the event followed by the SAR Presentation of the Colors. After the usual opening, introductions, and greetings, the Proclamation of Chief Senachwine Recognition Day, passed by the Henry City Council and signed by Mayor Doug Wilson, was read. The proclamation stated Chief Senachwine’s importance to the area for his refus-

al to join the 1832 Black Hawk War. This ensured peace for settlers and Native Americans in Putnam and Marshall counties.

Recitation of a poem by John Howard Bryant, “Senachwine’s Grave,” preceded the reading of the historical plaque placed at Senachwine’s burial site north of Putnam. The plaque was placed there in 1937 by SAR members.

A wreath representing Native American symbols was then presented, followed by closing remarks, prayer and retiring of the Colors.

Jay McCracken, former educator in both Senachwine and Henry

school districts, superintendent at Putnam and currently interim superintendent at LaMoille, presented a program on the area Indian mounds and Chief Senachwine’s gravesite. James Talliaferro, who arrived in the area in 1835, was the first white settler in Senachwine Township. He developed a farm in the valley below the grave. Subsequent owners, the Wheeler family, have cared for the site since 1888.

Refreshments were served prior to the 2018-19 chapter-year opening business meeting, called to order

by Regent Gillfillan. Registrar Sharon Bittner reported the chapter’s growth of 10 new members and four pending.

American History chairman Barb Peterson explained the year’s emphasis on tidbits of Revolutionary War history. Sheila Schrowang, Constitution Week chairman, invited members to view the display at

the Henry Library Sept. 17-23 and stated that another display will be placed at the Henry Grade School.

Members were encouraged to ring bells at 3 p.m. Sept. 17 to celebrate Constitution Week.

Among other business, the chapter voted to clean the gravestone of Real Daughter Clarissa McManners at the Henry Cemetery on the DAR National Day of Service on Oct. 11. A Real Daughter was the daughter of a Revolutionary War patriot as well as a member of a DAR Chapter. A memorial ceremony will also be conducted.

The next meeting will be at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 6, at the Meeting Place in Henry. The guest speaker will be Patricia Holcomb, District II Director of the Illinois DAR State Organization. New members will officially be welcomed into the chapter at that time.

Blood drive in McNabb MCNABB — An American Red Cross blood drive will be from 1 to 6 p.m.

The Putnam County Junior High Lady Pumas won the regional softball championship last week with wins over Midland 11-1 on Sept. 5, Woodland 8-1 on Sept. 10 and Streator Michael 10-8. The Pumas’ record was 20-4 heading into the sectional game. The Pumas lost to Ottawa Marquette 1-0 to end their season.

Kara Staley picked up the win in the championship game against Streator Michael. Tori Balma and Reise Zellmer were both 3-4 at the plate. Gabby Doyle and Maddie Weger both had two hits.

Staley also picked up the wins in the other regional contests. She didn’t allow any hits in the Midland game and one in the Woodland contest. Madelyn Torrance was 3-4 against Woodland. Gabby Doyle was 2-3. In the Midland contest, Torrance, Doyle and Tori Balma had two hits each. Torrance had a homer and a triple, scoring three times.

The Putnam County Pumas won the regional title on Sept. 11, beating Streator St. Maddie Weger safely steals second base against Ottawa Marquette in the 1-0 sectional Michael, 10-8. loss.

Putnam County Pumas win regional baseball games Putnam County Junior High Pumas won two games in regional play last week to advance to the championship game on Sept. 17.

The Pumas defeated Peru Catholiic 16-4 on Sept. 10 behind 11 hits with Ryan Hundley, Troy Petty and Blake Billups rapping out two hits each. Jackson McDonald went two innings on the mound, allowing two runs on one hit, striking pout three and walking one. Petty and Hundley entered the game out of the bullpen to close the game out.

Putnam County defeated Fieldcrest on Sept. 15 3-2 with a walk-off triple by Jackson McDonald in the bottom of the eighth inning.

PC’s pitchers struck out 12 batters. McDonald started and allowed one hit over five innings, striking out six.

Ryan Hundley picked up the win, throwing three innings, striking out six and walking one. He allowed one run on two hits. Austin Mattingly was 2-4 at the plate while McDonald drove in all three runs.

Dzierzynski wins at LaSalle-Peru Putnam County’s Mike Dzierzynski was the first runner to cross the finish line on Sept. 11 at LaSalle-Peru.

He ran the course in 17:20, 11 seconds ahead of the second place runner.

Other PC runners were Rob Twardowski (37th place, 22:42), Matt Haage (42nd, 22:54), Nick Mattern (51st, 23:51) and Wes Grimshaw (63rd, 27:11).

PC as a team placed sixth in the seven-team field with a score of 151.

Health officials announce flu vaccine availability, clinics The Bureau and Putnam County health departments will offer flu vaccinations starting soon, according to a news release.

Offsite clinics will be held for adults and children with private insurance.

Children with Medicaid or All Kids insurance need to call the health department to schedule their flu shot appointment. For an appointment, or more information, call the Bureau County Health Department at 815-872-5091, or the Putnam County Health Department at 815-925-7326.

Private insurance and Medicare

Part B will be accepted. Bring a current insurance or Medicare Part B card with you. The cost for a flu shot will be $40. Insurance will be billed as applicable.

According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control, everyone age 6 months or older should get a flu shot.

On average, 5 percent to 20 percent of Americans catch the flu every year, with more than 200,000 being hospitalized and 36,000 dying from flu complications. The best way to prevent the flu is getting a flu shot every year, officials said. For more
