A warning for tax delinquents PC treasurer announces deadlines to avoid tax sale

HENNEPIN — Those delinquent in paying this year’s property taxes have a short window of opportunity to avoid being included in the upcoming tax lien sale.

During the Sept. 11 Putnam County (PC) board meeting, PC treasurer Kevin Kunkel reported he’s been busy with recent tax collections and that his office is beginning to make the first distributions of the revenue.

He reported that as of Sept. 11, $511,000 will be disbursed to the county, of which $376,000 will be for the general fund.

Kunkel said as of Sept. 8, there were still approximately 700 parcels for which the county had not received property tax payments.

“We’ll be sending out friendly reminders this week, but October 9th is when I’ll have to send the file to the Putnam County Record for publication on the 18th. So, for anybody who doesn’t want that advertisement in the paper, please pay your taxes by October 9th,” Kunkel said.

He also reminded residents that mailing a payment postmarked by Oct. 9 will not work and that the payments will need to be received by his office by that date.

Kunkel said the judgment for permission to sell the tax liens will be issued Nov. 2 and the tax lien sale will be at 2 p.m. on Nov. 3.

The numbers were then tallied, and the aforementioned women collectively received the highest totals from the judges.

“This was not easy,” said one of the judges and one of last year’s Women of Distinction winners. “I thought it would be, but it was anything but easy. Every one of the people nominated were deserving.”

Perhaps a former judge from last year said it best: “All of the ladies who were nominated were so deserving of this award. It was difficult to select my winners, but after I was finished, it became clear all the ladies who were nominated were winners.

All of the 2017 Women of Distinction winners — as well as all women in general — will be honored at a luncheon set for 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 24, at The Barn at Hornbaker Gardens in rural Princeton. The facility is located at 22937 County Road 1140 North.

The American Institute of Architects (AIA) worked with USA Today to showcase great architecture in each state. Starved Rock Lodge was listed as one of 25 must see buildings in Illinois.

Chris Dvorak, superintendent for the Regional Office of Education (ROE) for LaSalle, Marshall and Putnam counties, as well as his new assistant superintendent, Matt Winchester, discussed educational updates in the area during their budget request of $14,075.

Dvorak spoke about steps being taken to address the substitute teacher shortage caused by the state’s more stringent requirements which has made it more difficult for those interested in becoming qualified.

For those interested in becoming a substitute teacher, informational open houses will be held at the ROE office from 9 to 11 a.m. on Sept. 13 and from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. on Sept. 14. The office is located in Room 102 on the first floor of the courthouse at 119 W. Madison St. in Ottawa.

The board approved the appointment of Brook Stanbary to the Senachwine Township Zoning Board of Appeals.

PC highway engineer Pat Sloan reported the seal-coat work on the McNabb Blacktop is completed and that the remaining seal-coat work in the county will soon be finished. According to Sloan, the improvements to the areas which washout near the Bottom Road bridge are scheduled to be done before it gets cold.

The work for the new salt storage building will be re-bid in the spring because of the estimated costs being higher than expected.

Dvorak also spoke of training efforts to qualify local firefighters to allow them to inspect their area schools during routine state-required safety inspections. He said this will not only save the state fire inspector from having to travel to the area, but will also provide an easy way for local firefighters to become more familiar with the layouts of area schools prior to emergency situations.

PCCC aims to protect seniors from health care scams

BY DAVE COOK news@putnamcountyrecord.com STANDARD — As quickly as they’re detected and defeated — new, more complex scams take their place. Health care is a common target. To help residents avoid these swindles, the Putnam County Community Center in Standard recently held a program teaching how to detect and report these types of fraud.

Presented on Aug. 17 by Amy Phillips, program coordinator for the Western Illinois Area Agency

on Aging (WIAAA) and Senior Medicare Patrol (SMP) representative, the event included steps which can be taken to detect health care billing errors, fraud and abuse, as well as ways to protect personal information. “Protecting your personal information is the best thing you can do to help prevent becoming a victim of any type of fraud, but it’s especially important when it concerns your health care,� Phillips said.

She advised treating Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security numbers

as they would their credit card information. After reviewing Medicare documents for mistakes, shredding those papers once they’re no longer useful is another important step in avoiding being a victim. “Medicare also won’t call or visit to try and sell you anything,� she said.

Phillips said the things to look for on medical bills are charges for things you didn’t receive, repetitive billing and charges for services not ordered by your health care provider. “If you suspect anything, errors, abuse or fraud, you

should report it immediately and call both your provider and your insurance plan. If you’re still suspicious, call your local SMP office,� she advised.

Medical journals were provided and recommended as a way to keep track of the often complicated and confusing results of multiple doctor visits at multiple locations.

Phillips said preparation before visiting a doctor is equally necessary.

Before an appointment people should know if the visit will be covered by Medicare or other insur-

ance; what the symptoms are, when they began and what makes them better or worse; and what medications are being taken and why. “Be sure to write the answers to these questions in your journal, as well as what happens during your time with the doctor. Make sure you understand everything they tell you before leaving, and use your journal to help review your bills to make sure they’re correct,� she said.

Phillips said that even if every preventive step

is taken, there’s still a chance someone will try to scam you. “There are so many ways your personal information can be used against you, so it’s very important to report suspected abuse.

You’ll not only be protecting yourself, but others as well,� she said.

Widmark in words Local artist pens new book celebrating Princeton’s most famous resident

BY DAVE COOK news@putnamcountyrecord.com PRINCETON — A few years ago, Princeton artist Bart Kassabaum, who is normally creating art featuring wildlife, landscapes and rural scenery, finished his collage celebrating the film career of Richard Widmark, a 1932 graduate of Princeton High School.

He’s since moved from brush to book in order to raise local awareness of Widmark’s time in Princeton. “Becoming Richard Widmark� was a four-year endeavor for Kassabaum and grew from the time he spent in research for his collage of Widmark’s filmography and connections to Princeton.

Born and raised in Granville and a resident of Princeton for more than 40 years, Kassabaum had no formal art training during his time in school but always considered it a hobby. While receiving encour-

agement from family and some teachers, many thought he’d pursue a career as a writer. “Not many people, except for my family, knew of my interest in drawing and art,� he said.

His connection to Richard Widmark reaches back to his childhood in Granville. “I first saw Richard Widmark in a movie, ‘The Law and Jake Wade’ at the Gran Theater, when I was 11 years of age and have been a fan ever since. When I moved to Princeton, I heard a lot about him, and that he went to school here. I’d thought at different times I’d do some type of art concerning him.

In 2013, a friend, Jim Dunn, wanted to know if I’d be interested in doing some art honoring Widmark’s 100th birthday in 2014. He wanted to get more public awareness of the famous movie actor and that he was from Princeton. I decided to do the art and was sort of pulled down

the rabbit hole. One thing led to another,� Kassabaum said.

In 1932, Widmark graduated from Princeton High School and then attended Lake Forest College.

He graduated in 1936 and remained there for two years to teach. Widmark then traveled to New York and embarked on a successful radio and stage career where he appeared on Broadway.

The year 1947 became a breakthrough year for Widmark after earning an Academy Award nomination and wide-reaching fame for his portrayal of psychopathic criminal Tommy Udo in the “Kiss of Death.�

Kassabaum said it was a challenge to complete all the research required to find just the right images to work from and to also learn everything he needed in order to complete the book.

HENNEPIN — Ella A. D’Amico, 80, of Hennepin died Monday, Sept. 4, 2017, at OSF St. Francis Medical Center in Peoria.

Ella was born Jan. 18, 1937, in Chicago to John and Alice (Goosens) Luchtenburg. She married Vito D’Amico Sept. 8, 1956.

Ella attended high school in Chicago. She was a homemaker.

Ella loved her family and they always came first. She enjoyed playing bingo and her favorite thing to do was play the slot machines in Mesa, Ariz.

Survivors include her husband, Vito D’Amico of Hennepin; two sons, Anthony (Paula) D’Amico of Lockport and Kenneth (Barbara) D’Amico of Lockport; five grandchildren, Tori (Greg) Zukowski, Megan (Tim) James, Kristofer Lapis, Derek Lapis and Nicholas D’Amico; and three great-grandchildren, Kristian, Kaylee and Oliver.

She was preceded in death by her parents and eight siblings.

There will be no service. Cremation rites have been accorded.

I probably didn’t really make a profit with it, but I think it’s done as much as anything in reminding the public of who he was and that he was as much a Princeton boy as anyone. I know not everyone feels that way, but I think this book will have a greater effect in bringing about a renewed interest in him and his movies, both locally and across the country,” Kassabaum said.

While he never met Widmark himself, Kassabaum did get to know several of his classmates. He has met another movie star though, Karl Malden, who happened to be good friends with Widmark. Kassabaum shares the story of their 1976 encounter in his book.

And like many fans, Kassabaum has difficulty in picking a favorite out of Widmark’s many roles, but he does know what he likes about the actor’s performances.

“I love watching for the subtle moments, when you think he’s going in one direction and just like that, he goes in another. He has command of the screen when he’s in any role, and I have a lot of favorite performances. Tommy Udo in ‘Kiss of Death;’ Ray Biddle in ‘No

Kassabaum also learned how Widmark was different in his personal life as compared to some of the roles in which he was cast.

“It was night and day. He was a private person who shunned the spotlight off the screen and was a family man who loved the outdoor life on his ranch in California and his farm in Connecticut,” he said.

While the Princeton Public Library has a Richard Widmark film collection and regularly screens them during their “Widmark Wednesdays,” Kassabaum would like to see more done.

“I’m part of the Rediscover Richard Widmark group, and we hope to have a star on the sidewalk outside of the Apollo Theater where he worked as a doorman in high school. We also hope to have a scholarship started at Princeton High School,” he explained.

Kassabaum described the experience of researching Widmark’s life, career and impact as a satisfying experience which allowed him to connect with many of the people across the country who knew Widmark and his family.

“These connections and these people are what my book is about.

They were all in the big tumbler of life with the famous actor from Princeton, Illinois,” he said.

Kassabaum is currently working to promote and sell “Becoming Richard Widmark,” and he’s looking forward to holding book signings. He’ll be speaking at the Granville Public Library at 6 p.m. on Sept. 19.

New online service for replacement Social Security cards in Illinois The Social Security Administration introduced the expansion of online services for residents of Illinois available through its my Social Security portal at www. socialsecurity.gov/myaccount. Nancy A. Berryhill, acting commissioner of Social Security, announced that residents of Illinois can use the portal for many replacement Social Security number (SSN) card requests. This will allow people to replace

their SSN card from the comfort of their home or office, without the need to travel to a Social Security office.

“I’m pleased to offer the residents of Illinois the added convenience of replacing a Social Security card through the my Social Security portal,” Berryhill said. “We will continue to work on innovative initiatives to provide people with safe, secure and convenient options for doing business

with us online or in person.”

The agency is conducting a gradual roll out of this service; Illinois is one of the states, plus the District of Columbia, where this option is available.

Throughout 2017, the agency will continue to expand the service option to other states. This service will mean shorter wait times for the public in the more than 1,200 Social Security offices across the country and allows staff more time

to work with customers who have extensive service needs.

Walking alone?

W

hen my son was little, the occasion often arose where he had to walk to school on his own.

We live within visual distance of the school, and most days he was accompanied by the older kids from my home daycare. But because of absence, illness or other circumstances, there were days when he stood on the front step with a hint of fear in his voice as he set out on his own. “Mommy, will you watch me?”

He really wanted to be brave. He knew it was not really that far, and he walked it every day ... just not alone.

I was unable to leave because of my younger charges, so I assured him that I would watch him from the porch until he was safe with the crossing guard at the corner. This gave him the confidence he needed to set out with boldness.

As his mother, and the victim of a hovering mother, I too was a little nervous. My own mother had read every crime statistic ever posted and was not shy about clipping articles and slipping them into my belongings, and pointing out every danger that lurked around the corner. Babies can drown in a teaspoon full of water. Children can choke on everything from Legos to hot dog parts and peanut butter. I cringed every time the new issue of Reader’s Digest would come out and she’d flip to the ‘Drama in Real Life’ section, because some of those ridiculous adventures hampered my ambitions to walk through the parking lot of the local Walmart. Would I be attacked by a rogue lynx or a mountain lion? (Make sure you check under your vehicle as well as on top of it, in case it slashes at your ankles first to take you down.)

I know her intention was to keep me safe. I know she loved me and that was her motivation. I forgave her the persistence of her efforts, as long as she forgave me the eye rolls and huffy breathing while she recited the latest personal disaster she had read about.

Our town has swollen from 500 to 750 in the 48 years I’ve lived here, so it’s not like we’re talking inner city living when it comes to crime and danger.

About 27 years ago, there was a little girl abducted and killed in the town 10 miles away, so we know we can never consider ourselves truly safe, but the chances my son would be snatched were slim. I always felt better when the big kids went with him. Then I didn’t feel compelled to keep my eyes glued to him until he reached the corner.

Does God feel this way about us too?

He is always aware of where we are, but when we are walking with Christian brothers and sisters who hold us accountable and watch out for our well being, does He feel more comfortable in letting us walk ‘alone?’

Does He fret and worry and cross His arms while biting His fingernails as we skip through puddles and drag our bookbags?

All I know is that I am glad He’s watching. I’m glad I have that assurance that if the stranger with the candy pulls up, He will be right there to save me. He is never far away, and all I need to do is call out.

Illinois public schools on defensive New program bespeaks lack of confidence in the system

A

s I write this, the Illinois House has just passed a school funding bill that includes $75 million in first-ever state tax credits for scholarships for youngsters to attend nonpublic schools in our state.

The proposal is yet another declaration of lack of confidence in Illinois public schools.

I am a believer in public schools as the historic bedrock upon which our nation has been built. I also believe in competition as a tool for enhancing quality.

Yet public schools have been held suspect in various quarters since the mid-1800s.

Catholic schools became especially important to Irish Catholic immigrants because of intense discrimination against these newcomers from Yankees, who controlled the public schools.

By the 1960s, however, many of the Catholic parish schools began to struggle because they were losing their low-cost teaching-religious sisters and brothers.

About the same time, Catholic families began fleeing many inner-city neighborhoods, leaving behind poor parishes that then struggled to provide education to minority students.

Coincidentally, or not, the four Illinois legislative leaders (two Dems, two GOPers) who recently approved the tax credit idea are all Irish Catholic.

In 1963, the US Supreme Court prohibited prayer in schools. As a result, I think many conservative Chris-

UNDERSTANDING ILLINOIS Jim Nowlan tians began to look for alternatives such as home-schooling. The home school families I know have little good to say about public schools.

But much else was at play as well.

When I was a back-bench lawmaker in the late 1960s, many of us felt aid-to-nonpublic schools was unconstitutional.

Yet a series of court decisions since then concluded that aid to religious schools can pass constitutional muster. The aid must benefit the student, as in scholarships to students, who in turn use same for tuition at nonpublic schools (most of which are Catholic).

In 1983, the Reagan education department issued “A Nation at Risk,” a report that excoriated American schools, 90 percent of which are still public, for falling behind other nations in student achievement.

This prompted a school reform movement that soldiers on to this day. The report energized American corporate leaders to weigh in, saying they could improve schools by making them more like accountable businesses.

Also in the 1980s — I said this was complicated — teacher unions gained the right to strike in Illinois and rapidly became political powerhouses. Some business leaders saw a connection

between teacher unions and perceived poor student achievement. This fueled efforts to provide alternatives to traditional public schools.

These initiatives include charter schools, which are somewhat independent schools within public school districts. They operate free of unions thus far.

Most of the 100 or more charter schools in Illinois are in Chicago. Few are found downstate, where most school districts are too small to fit in another school, even if they wanted to.

I have always felt that most education failings result primarily from increasing family dysfunction and low parental expectations for their children.

For example, I go right by the local high school on my frequent walks out into the country. I see many teacher automobiles in the parking lot early each morning, long before school begins.

The many teachers I know work their butts off and often seem more caring of the students than some of the parents—all for an average salary in my rural district of $48,500.

As I understand the sketchy details of the tax credit proposal, wealthy individuals would get a 75 percent credit for contributions to a scholarship fund to help low-income youngsters attend non-public schools.

This credit plus federal tax deductions might make it possible for donors to actually “make a buck” net from their “good deeds.”

The $75 million in tax credits would deprive the state general funds of that amount, money that might otherwise go to public schools. Clearly, the idea is a slap at public schools.

I do believe competition via school choice induces educators to up their game in order to keep their students.

On the other hand, alternatives to traditional public education, by their nature, tend to attract better students, probably with fewer problems overall, into their classrooms. Some perform better than traditional publics; some do not.

Neighboring Iowa offers its students open enrollment. That is, students may attend any public school they wish at no increased cost. If a neighboring school district has a better music program, a talented aspiring musician can attend that school. Or Mom can take her daughter to work 40 miles away each day, and drop her girl off at school in the town where she works, riding together each way each day.

People say open enrollment wouldn’t work in Illinois.

They say parents who could figure out the transportation involved would send their kids to the schools that spend twice as much per pupil as their own district, and for other reasons.

I say we should pilot the idea in part of the state, as another public school choice option.

Political theater in Statehouse

llinois lawmakers might want to consider new careers on the stage as their legislative terms wind down.

Most aren’t very good at governing, but they sure do have the whole political theater thing down.

Take Monday, Aug 28.

The Illinois House was in session to consider education funding reform.

Representatives essentially had three options: 1. Approve a compromise bill hammered out by legislative leaders from both political parties and supported by Gov. Bruce Rauner but that was opposed by teachers’ unions. 2. Override Rauner’s veto of Democrats’ one-sided funding reform plan that would need at least four Republicans to break from Rauner for the override vote to succeed. 3.

Fail at the first two and start over, further delaying school funding this year.

But lawmakers weren’t going to come to any resolution without their politically staged drama playing out.

The compromise plan agreed on by both parties’

COMMENTARY Dan McCaleb legislative leaders largely negated Rauner’s changes, including his removal of Chicago Public Schools pension bailout funding. But it added a few positive things Rauner wanted: Relief for schools from some of the state’s unfunded mandates (including items addressing mandatory physical and drivers’ education) and the creation of a school choice plan that would give up to 6,000 lower-income students annually an opportunity to attend the private school of their choice.

The school choice plan allows for voluntary, tax-deductible donations, capped at $75 million annually, toward school choice scholarships. The pilot program would expire after five years unless renewed.

Given the more than $200 million in additional state aid to CPS annually, the fiveyear school choice program seemed like a reasonable

compromise ... unless you’re a teachers’ union.

That put House Democrats, particularly those from Chicago, in a tight spot.

With unions making up much of their base, they had a tough decision: Support a compromise plan that could pass and make sure schools get funded but alienate teachers’ unions. Or stand with the unions, reject the compromise but also fail to override Rauner’s SB1 veto, jeopardizing school funding.

But House Speaker Michael Madigan, being the genius puppetmaster he is, offered a third option, and this is where the political theatre comes into play. They could pretend to stand behind the unions but ultimately support the compromise.

And this is exactly how it played out.

Everyone knew the endgame, it just took a while to get there.

In Act 1, Madigan called the compromise bill to the floor, knowing it wasn’t going to pass.

Democrats gave angry speeches about why school

choice was bad and SB1 was good. The measure, according to script, failed. Democrats showed they supported their teachers unions and all was good with the world.

In Act 2, the governor’s veto override was called and, again according to script, the measure failed. Even though Democrats didn’t have a supermajority to successfully override, they showed their teachers unions they stood with them and against Rauner.

But without Act 3, schools remained in danger of not being funded.

So the compromise bill was recalled to the floor and, according to script, more than 25 lawmakers switched their votes, despite the earlier vote being only 97 minutes prior. The measure passed and was sent to the Senate for concurrence.

Political theater like this, sadly, is more common in Springfield than substantive, positive outcomes.

Pumas advance to regional championship STREATOR — Putnam County Pumas advanced to the regional championship game by beating Washington St. Pats on Sept. 9 at Bodznick Field in Streator, 10-1.

Kara Staley was the winning pitcher, striking out seven batters and walking only one. Tori Balma and Reise Zellmer each had four hits.

“Tremendous defensive game today especially by Linzee Fay,” said coach Chris Walker. “She contributed offensively with a big triple in the fifth inning.

Our defense limits St. Pats’ opportunities by picking off a couple runners.

“We ran the bases very well and opened the game with three runs, which really set the tone for the day. Reise Zellmer had

a great day at the plate going 4-4. It was an exceptional team effort today,” he added.

The Pumas beat Lowpoint-Washburn 19-8 on Sept. 6.

Kara Staley was the winning pitcher, striking out eight and walking five. Zellmer, Balma, Fay and Doyle had two hits each for the Pumas.

“After a slow start and finding ourselves down 6-1 in the third inning, we really shifted gears,” said Walker. “Offensively we were more discipline in the box starting in the fourth inning. Our base running really gave us a boost, too.”

The championship game was played on Monday after the Putnam County Record’s deadline.

SPRINGFIELD — A Marshall-Putnam County volunteer was honored for his service as a 4-H volunteer.

Rod Monier of Sparland was one of 71 volunteers recognized by the Illinois 4-H Foundation as a 4-H Hall of Fame recipient during a ceremony Aug. 12 at the Illinois State Fair in Springfield.

Monier has served Marshall-Putnam 4-H for 26 years as a club leader, beef superintendent, association member and as a director on the Marshall-Putnam Extension and 4-H Foundation board. He began his 4-H career as a member of the Steuben Rangers, where he held every office at one time or another.

He was involved with livestock and general projects as a Steuben Ranger. He attended several state events such as camps and leadership conferences. He became the leader of his 4-H club while his three daughters were in 4-H. His oldest of five grandchildren just started his 4-H career, so he will continue to be a part of Marshall-Putnam 4-H for years to come.

This year celebrated the 13-year anniversary of the award, said

Angie Barnard, executive director of the Illinois 4-H Foundation.

“These longtime volunteers fully embody what 4-H strives to instill in youth,” Barnard said. “They are caring, dedicated, generous leaders, and the Illinois 4-H Foundation is extremely proud to be able to provide this honor to each and every one of them to thank them for their service to this wonderful organization.”

The Illinois 4-H Foundation established the statewide Hall of Fame in 2004 to honor and celebrate extraordinary 4-H alumni, volunteers and former 4-H staff. Each inductee received a commemorative Hall of Fame medallion.

“As a result of these volunteers’ years of service and leadership to Illinois 4-H,” Barnard said, “the program they love will continue to create wonderful opportunities for the young people whose lives it touches.

“The Foundation provides avenues to continue to support the work of Illinois 4-H by accepting financial gifts specifically directed to the program you wish to sup-

4-H has gone to the dogs, and that’s a good thing CHAMPAIGN-URBANA — More than 150 dogs competed with their owners for championship honors in the 2017 Illinois 4-H State Dog Show held Aug. 26 and 27 at the Dog Training Club of Champaign-Urbana.

To get to this level of competition, 4-H members devote months of training, said Dan Jennings, University of Illinois Extension animal science educator. “Not only do the dogs have to perform the required tasks, but they must do so in a new environment surrounded by new noises and distractions, including several other dogs in the same arena,” Jennings said.

Danielle Stuber of Tazewell County claimed the beginner high point award with a score of 197.5. She exhibited in the beginner novice 2 division.

Frances O’Donnel of Champaign County received the Deborah Orr Memorial Award for scoring the highest number of points (192.5) in the novice class. The cash award honors the late Deborah Orr who was active in the Kane County dog

obedience program.

Hadley Shaw of McHenry County took first place in the beginner novice 1 division. Other top finishers included Vincent Stewart of Kendall County, second; Allison Abell of Lee County, third; Adelynn McNamara of McLean County, fourth; and Samantha Zellers of Lee County, fifth.

Food service classes announced PRINCETON — The Bureau, Putnam and Marshall County Health Department is announcing two upcoming Food Service Sanitation Manager Certificate Classes provided at two locations.

The first class will be from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Oct. 4 at the Bureau County Health Department, 526 Bureau Valley Parkway, Princeton. The exam will follow.

The second class will be from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Nov. 7 at the Marshall County Health Department, 319 Sixth St., Lacon. The exam will follow.

A minimum of 8 hours is required by the Illinois Department of Public Health for certification. The fee is $125 and fees are non-refundable.

Payment is necessary at time of registration to guarantee a seat in class.

Ova named 21st Century scholar OGLESBY — Illinois Valley Community College sophomore Akari Oya of Peru was named the 21st Century Scholar at the IVCC Foundation’s 11th annual 21st Century Scholars Society dinner on Aug. 31 in LaSalle.

A 4.0 student, Oya plans to transfer to study psychological counseling. She has visited Ivy League universities Yale, Harvard and Columbia and is also considering Big 10 universities Michigan, Illinois and Wisconsin.

Oya was one of four finalists vying for the coveted $3,000 21st Century Scholar award for tuition, books and fees. Other finalists, Brianna Legner of Princeton, Nick Needs of Peru and Martha Hoffman of Earlville, each received $1,500.

“To me, this award represents three things: recognition, motivation and hope,” Oya said in her acceptance speech. “I have come to realize that countless people like my family, friends, IVCC faculty and this Society stands beside me.”

Oya, the daughter of Etsushi and Nobuko Oya, is the photography editor of IVCC’s award-winning student newspaper IV Leader and the visual arts and photography editor for River Currents, the

student literary and art journal. Winner of IVCC’s 2017 Paul Simon Essay Contest, Oya read her submission at the May commencement.

She is currently engaged in two independent research projects: a study on the historical and social contrasts between the cities of LaSalle and Peru and an analysis of student dream journals.

For the latter project, she traveled to California at her own expense this summer for a week-long conference on dreams.

Legner, the daughter of Dan and Sue Legner, is a 4.0 student who will transfer to the University of Illinois to major in speech pathology. After college, she plans to return home to work in local schools.

This summer she won the crown as Bureau County Fair queen and will represent the county at the state pageant in 2018.

Needs, the son of George and Barb Needs, is the Student Government Association president and an Eagle Scout. He plans to transfer to the University of Illinois and pursue a career in law. An active community volunteer for the PADS shelter and Illinois Valley Food Pantry, he personally raised $1,600 for Team World Vision by running the Chicago Mar-

athon last October. Needs’ run will provide 32 children in Third World countries with drinking water for life.

Hoffman, the daughter of Winifred Hoffman and the late Kenneth Hoffman, was the 2016 Earlville High School valedictorian.

She will transfer to Northern Illinois University to study communications. A student representative to IVCC’s ag advisory committee, Hoffman donated 350 dozen eggs from her chicken flock to the local food pantry, among other charitable acts.

Along with speeches from each finalist, IVCC President Jerry Corcoran and Foundation President Sue Schmitt also spoke.

Peoria Superfest Saturday, Sunday at Exposition Gardens Fairgrounds PEORIA — Ham radio and electronics enthusiasts from several Midwestern states will converge on Exposition Gardens Fairgrounds in Peoria for Illinois’ largest “Hamfest” on Saturday, Sept. 16, and Sunday, Sept. 17.

For more than 50 years, the “Peoria Superfest,” sponsored by the Peoria-Area Amateur Radio Club, has provided the perfect venue for commercial vendors. New and used amateur radios and accessories, computer equipment, peripherals and electronic components will be

offered from 8 a.m. Saturday to 2 p.m. Sunday. A large outdoor open-air flea market will begin at 6 a.m.

Saturday and run through 2 p.m. Sunday. The flea market will host private sellers with a wide assortment of almost anything electronic.

This year, the theme for the Peoria Superfest is “Do It Yourself” and will focus on kit building and working with micro-controllers and MESH networks.

Forums will center around making projects with Arduino microcomputer, and Kit Building. Join

Joe Eisenberg, K0NEB, for some great kit building instruction and Mike Brown, KG9DW, will provide instruction in Arduino programming and MESH networks.

Forums will be held in the Ameren-Cilco Building from 8:30 to 11 a.m.

Examinations for FCC ham licenses will be conducted on Saturday, starting at 1 p.m. in the Ameren-Cilco Building.

Information on how to become a ham radio operator and on the next ham radio class will also be available.

On Sunday there will be a Go-Kit competition at 9 a.m. in the Youth Building for those amateur radio operators that have built portable radio stations that are used during emergency situations such as tornadoes and floods. These Go-Kits are deployed where needed to provide communications to served agencies such as the Red Cross and other groups and aid disaster recovery efforts.

Also on Sunday, a high-altitude balloon will be launched from Exposition Gardens at approximately 11 a.m. The balloon will

contain a variety of ham radio equipment, including a high-altitude GPS, Automatic Packet Reporting System (APRS) for tracking the balloon and a UHF simplex repeater. High definition still and video cameras will be part of the payload.

Superfest prizes include a Yaesu FT-991A, a ICOM 5100 and a Rohn 30-foot tower. The winner of the tower will be drawn at 1 p.m. Sunday. The tower winner is responsible for all transportation costs

associated with the tower.

Great hourly prizes will be offered also.

Food service is available onsite during Superfest hours of operation.

All events are open to the public. Children under 12 will be admitted free when accompanied by an adult.

One point separates top National Direct Support Professionals Recognition Week two in 4-H poultry contest

PRINCETON

PRINCETON — Each year, Gateway Services, Inc. recognizes that the Direct Support Professionals (or DSPs, as they are called), are the frontline of the organization. Without them, it would be impossible to accomplish all of the great things we are able to do.

“There’s no doubt that our DSPs are a hard-working and dedicated group. They ensure that the individuals have the necessary supports to live, work, and enjoy life as independently as possible in their communities,” said Tracy Wright, interim CEO. “We are blessed to have over 50 DSPs who work among our six residential homes, various community sites, and day program

settings.”

Gateway Services operates a developmental training program in both Princeton and Henry and has six 24-hour residential homes in Princeton. A number of other individuals receive supports in their homes on an intermittent basis, and others receive assistance on the job.

Gov. Bruce Rauner’s proclamation acknowledges the work that DSPs do as well, stating “direct support professionals must build close, respectful and trusted relationships with the persons they help support” and “direct support professionals help those with disabilities participate fully in their communities and remain connected to family and

friends.” He closes by proclaiming Sept. 11-15, as Direct Support Professionals Recognition Week in Illinois “to recognize the dedication and vital role of direct support professionals in enhancing the lives of individuals of all ages with disabilities.”

Direct Support Professional Recognition Week is recognized annually across the country in various ways to honor the tens of thousands of workers who enable people with intellectual, developmental and other significant disabilities and their families to live healthy lives in the community. SPRINGFIELD — A Sangamon County 4-H member edged out his competition by one point to claim the top prize in the 2017 Illinois 4-H State Poultry Judging Contest held Aug. 10 during the Illinois State Fair in Springfield.

Daniel Kloppe, 18, New Berlin, earned first place, with Will County 4-H member Ben Mills, Peotone, taking second place.

Other top finishers in the senior division included Lorraine Selucky of Will County, Dalton Wachter of Jo Daviess County and Luke Jesgarz of Shel-

by County.

In the 13 and under age division, Izzy Haring of Jo Daviess County won by a wide margin, followed

by Isaac Kuster of Henry County, second; Reganne Price of Will County, third; Macy Donoho of Marion County, fourth; and Conner Blunier of Marshall-Putnam County, fifth.

The junior team from Moultrie-Douglas counties took first place in team competition.
