Serial killer’s statement sparks search

Prolific murderer told podcast he killed woman, disposed of body there

A serial killer named Dellmus Colvin has been talking, telling the podcast “Where the Bodies Are Buried” of places he killed and disposed of as many as 52 female victims.

One of them, he told the podcast, was in LaSalle County — and police may have found the aged crime scene.

But they aren’t sure yet.

About 1:30 p.m. Sept. 2, investigators halted the search of a section of LaSalle Road west of Chartres Street.

Crime scene technicians along with cadaver dogs and their handlers were spotted searching the grounds near an abandoned truck wash.

Sheriff Tom Templeton said the dogs were beginning to struggle with the early afternoon heat, and it was decided to resume the search Sept. 9, by which time cooler temperatures would lend to an extended search.

“Based upon the issue with the animals — it’s getting warmer — the consensus is we start again on this next Wednesday,” Templeton said.

Templeton did confirm that evidence was collected and investigators were discussing how best to transfer the items collected for forensic analysis.

Although not confirmed, reports at the scene indicated that bones or bone fragments were collected from at least two places. However, photos relayed to technicians in Springfield yielded inconclusive results, and direct analysis would be required to rule out animal bones or centuries-old Native American artifacts.

The operation is a joint investigation by the sheriff’s office and the La Salle and Peru police departments.

The site in question sits at the edge of where the two municipal borders meet with unincorporated La Salle County, and authorities are unsure of jurisdiction should the findings open a criminal investigation.

Colvin’s extensive statement raises the possibility of murder.

The former truck driver was arrested in 2005 and claimed upon his arrest that he had murdered about 50 women coast to coast between 1983 and 2005.

He currently is serving multiple life sentences in Ohio and recently was featured on the podcast “Where the Bodies Are Buried,” where he

said he strangled a woman at the Flying J Travel Center in La Salle and then left the body at a nearby, out-ofbusiness truck wash.

Asked on the podcast which of his undiscovered victims would be easiest to locate, Colvin said, “I would have to think La Salle.”

He continued: “I was at the Flying J in Illinois, and I was doing paperwork. She knocked on the door, and I said, ‘Beat it. Get the [expletive] out of here.’ She came back, and I said, ‘Didn’t I just run you away?’ I said, ‘Wait right here.’

“I had to buy some log books, I bought about four of them, came back, climbed up in the truck, strangled her.”

When asked by the interviewer, Colvin went on to describe his leaving the body at a nearby, abandoned truck wash.

“It was just starting to rain, and it got foggy, and that’s when I remembered that abandoned truck wash.

Always deserted, no one comes down there. It’s dark, and it’s scary,” he

said.

“I pulled all the way in the back, and weeds are so high, and I remember picking [the victim] up on my shoulders, and into the woods I go. I got the hell up out of there.”

Those statements piqued the interest of local investigators, who huddled together and formulated a plan before sending for help. A dog handler from out of state said the summons to LaSalle County arrived Sept.

Through traffic on LaSalle Road, which feeds into May Road near the former Tiki Inn, was halted Wednesday morning as a throng of investigators milled about with cameras, radios and search equipment.

Those at the scene expressed doubt the remains, should they be found to be both human and recent, would be quickly identified. Technicians would face at least 15 years of decomposition and degradation, and Colvin’s criminal tendencies could mean the victim was herself a drifter with only fleeting ties to LaSalle County.

LASALLE — Stage 212, in the interest of the health and safety of their patrons and participants, has decided to postpone to 2021 the remainder of their 2020 season, which began this past winter with “Nunsensations: The Nunsense Vegas Revue.”

The three remaining productions in the 2020 season package are the hilarious comedy “Farce of Nature,” the classic Cole Porter musical, “Kiss Me Kate” and the musical comedy, “Don’t Hug Me.” These three productions will round out the four-production package purchased by 2020 season subscribers. The previously announced comedic drama, “August Osage County” will

no longer be presented. Stage 212 will announce updated dates and performance times for the three productions via email, social media and press announcements as more information regarding the ability to re-open safely and effectively becomes available.

Stage 212 has also decided to postpone indefinitely their 2020 fundraiser production “212 Sings: Cocktails & Classics.” The event will be rescheduled when the theater is allowed to re-open safely. Current “212 Sings: Cocktails and Classics” ticket holders have the option to keep their tickets and apply them to the as yet undetermined future performance dates, or they

may request a full refund. To apply for a refund, ticket holders must submit a refund request via email to stage212box@gmail.com or mail it to Stage 212 at P.O. Box 198, LaSalle, IL 61301. They should include the ticket holder’s name and a phone number to be reached at, along with an address to receive the refund check. All refunds will be distributed in check form. Those deciding to keep their tickets do not need to do anything. The tickets will be automatically transferred to the new dates when the production is rescheduled. Panthers Team Room gets face lift

GRANVILLE — Putnam County athletic director/coach Chris Newsome got some unexpected time on his hands when the coronavirus forced schools to go to remote learning.

He made the most of the opportunity, renovating the Panthers Team Room at RM Germano Gymnasium.

Along with the gym makeover, it has all proven to give the PC facilities a small-college feel.

“I had been discussing my renovation idea with Coach (Jared) Sale off and on for about a year. The old team room had an L shaped bench opposite of a whiteboard with a TV up in the corner. The gold paint was a bit overwhelming and was starting to peel,” Newsome said.

“I think it turned out great. I still have a few finishing touches I want to do with the room, but it’s ready to go and it’s a great upgrade that our student athletes and coaches will be able to enjoy for many years to come.”

First, Newsome sent over all the measurements to Don Pederson of Pederson Construction to give him an idea of what he was trying to accomplish. Pederson provided Newsome with a list of materials that he needed and a mock-up of a locker design.

Newsome moved the whiteboard and the TV from the east wall to the north wall so they could have lockers on both sides. Each side has eight lockers.

The custodial crew and summer workers filled any old wall anchor holes in the block and gave it a couple coats of white paint. The inside of the

locker walls were painted a darker grey color.

“It’s not a huge space, so we wanted to stay away from black so that it felt more open,” Newsome said.

Next, Newsome ran new electrical to provide the student athletes with an outlet inside each of the lockers, which has proven to be a big hit with the kids.

“The individual outlet sounds like a small thing, but I’ve heard more positive comments from players about having the chance to charge

their phone or Chromebook than any other positive about the room,” Newsome said.

Pederson and Newsome spent a full day putting all the pieces together to go for the school year.

“I am just hoping that our teams will have the opportunity to utilize this upgraded space,” Newsome said.

Newsome thanked Pederson for donating his time, and Tracy Reaska, director of buildings and grounds, the custodial staff and summer workers for all their help.

BY CARL CARLSON Special to the PCR GRANVILLE — Last May, the annual Excellence in Education awards program hosted by the regional office of education was canceled due to COVID-19. Putnam County School District would still like to recognize those teachers and staff who missed out on being awarded during last spring’s celebration.

Primary school Abby Cravatta is currently teaching first grade at Putnam County Primary School. This is her third year teaching at Putnam County Primary School, and fifth year teaching. Previously, she was a teacher for two years at Midland #7. She has coached seventh-grade volleyball and now she is co-leading the school’s activity committee. Cravatta steps up and volunteers to improve the building.

She demonstrates natural leadership in the content and technology areas specifically through her own natural motivational and research-based methods. Her favorite part of teaching is creating a unique relationship with each student, and watching their

curiosity for learning grow. Which is exactly why she deserves to be recognized as an Excellence in Education Teacher.

Elementary school Valerie Peterson has been teaching fourth grade at Putnam County Elementary School for 20 years. She has been a tremendous asset to the district throughout her tenure. Peterson has been a teacher leader among her peers by mentoring new teachers and leading numerous committees throughout the years. Peterson is passionate about education and her enthusiasm for teaching and learning is second to none. Thank you for all that you do for your students and continued leadership.

Virtual Illinois Valley Walk to End Alzheimer’s set for Sept. 12 The annual Illinois Valley Walk to End Alzheimer’s will be held Saturday, Sept. 12, in Ottawa.

The event, sponsored by the Alzheimer’s Association, will be different this year than in the past. In addition to virtual ceremonies conducted for the first time because of the COVID-19 pandemic, organizers suggest that rather than the usual large gathering of supporters, individuals, families or small groups should perform the walk along the sidewalks, tracks and trails throughout the city.

The virtual opening ceremony will feature local speakers and a presentation of “Promise Flowers,” honoring the personal reasons people join the fight against Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia and delivered via smartphones, computers and tablets.

Members of the Alzheimers Association staff and volunteers will create the iconic “Promise Garden” in a view-only format to honor those impacted by the disease, which affects over 5 million people across the country – 230,000 in Illinois alone – and is the sixth-leading cause of death in the United States.

Held since 1989, the walk as a whole is the world’s largest event to raise awareness and funds for Alzheimer’s care, support and research.

FRIEDA R. PATAROZZI GRANVILLE — Frieda Rose (Rinaldi) Patarozzi, 102, died peacefully on Thursday, August 27th, 2020, at St. Margaret’s Hospital in Spring Valley, IL. A Mass and Christian burial was held Friday, September 4th, 2020, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Granville. The burial was at Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery in Granville. The Dysart-Cofoid Funeral Chapel assisted the family with the arrangements.

Frieda was born September 7th, 1917, in Toluca, IL to Isacco and Adele (Tasi) Rinaldi. Frieda married Sisto Patarozzi on November 24, 1938. She and Sisto lived in Mark, IL where they raised their two daughters, Palma and Valerie.

Frieda was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; their daughter, Valerie Hrovat (Ron) of McNabb; and two siblings, sister, Jennie Kovacevich of Flanagan, IL, and Dante Rinaldi of Washington, IL. She is survived by her daughter, Palma Lyons (Kevin) of Byron, IL; and brother, Mario Rinaldi of Cupertino, CA. Tri-DENT makes two methamphetamine arrests About 250 grams of meth found when police search residence

BY SHAW MEDIA On Aug. 25, the Tri-County Drug Enforcement Narcotics Team (TriDENT), working directly with the Department of Homeland Security, the LaSalle County Sheriff’s Office and the Ottawa Police Department, conducted an investigation into the trafficking and delivery of about 250 grams of methamphetamine in Ottawa.

The team of law enforcement agents and investigators executed a LaSalle County search warrant on Kansas Street in Ottawa.

During the search of the residence, agents said they recovered a package containing about 250 grams of purported methamphetamine.

While investigating the occupants of the residence, agents

arrested Elizabeth N. Rodriguez, age 32. Rodriguez was transported to the LaSalle County Jail for further investigation and was charged with one count of unlawful possession of methamphetamine with the intent to deliver, over 100 grams, a Class X felony.

Stemming from this investigation, the team conducted a controlled delivery of the purported methamphetamine. At that time, Enrique Vidal Santana-Diaz, 27, of Ottawa was arrested and transported to the LaSalle County Jail, where he later was charged with one count of unlawful possession of methamphetamine with the intent to deliver, over 100 grams, a Class X felony.

Both Rodriguez and SantanaDiaz were turned over to LaSalle County Jail. Deputies to await a felony bond hearing.

Tri-DENT consists of LaSalle, Streator, Princeton, Oglesby, Ottawa and Mendota police departments along with La Salle, Bureau and Putnam County sheriff’s offices.

A well-known fixture in downtown Granville, Frieda worked 32 years at the Granville Hardware Store before retiring in 1986. During the ’40s and ’50s, you could find Frieda and her husband working most weekends in DePue at the Silver Dome tavern helping out Olga and Louise (her sisters-in-law).

She was a member of Sacred Heart Church in Granville and loved taking care of her family. She was known for her tough love, sharp wit and wonderful cooking. She made the best chicken stew, “gnochs” and succarines. You always knew there would be cookies in the cookie jar or candies in the dish when you stopped for a visit.

Frieda was beloved by her family and will be sorely missed by all. This is especially true of Danny and Eric, who promise to be on their best behavior, because even as adult men, they are still afraid she might show up with the stick!

Thank you to all of the staff at Liberty Village in Peru and St. Margaret’s Hospital in Spring Valley for the great care that Frieda received over these past few years and days. Your compassion and attention did not go unnoticed.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be directed to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, Granville Sacred Heart Catholic Church, or to the donors choice.

St. Margaret’s Auxiliary awards health care scholarships The St. Margaret’s Hospital Auxiliary recently awarded five scholarships to local students who have been accepted into or who are currently enrolled in a health care professional curriculum. Recipients of this year’s scholarships include: Kaelyn Condon is a student at Illinois State University and will begin her third year this fall. She was awarded the $1,000 Janyce Stuckert Memorial Scholarship, presented by Stuckert’s family in her honor. The St. Bede graduate hopes to become a nurse practitioner. The Spring Valley native is the daughter of Michael and Christy Condon.

Madelyn Hultz is a recent Hall graduate who will be attending Illinois State University this fall. She was recently awarded a $1,000 St. Margaret’s Auxiliary Scholarship to help further her goal of becoming an OB or pediatric nurse. She lives in Spring Valley with her parents, Scott and Nichole Hultz.

Ryan Marlett is in his second year at Dominican University pursuing his goal of becoming a physician’s assistant. The La Salle-Peru High School graduate already has obtained his Bachelor of Science from Illinois State University. He recently was awarded a $1,000 St. Margaret’s Aux-

iliary Scholarship. He is the son of John and Mary Marlett of LaSalle.

Olivia Mueller is a student at Illinois Valley Community College studying in the Nursing Program.

She also has worked at St. Margaret’s for four years as a CNA and ER registration clerk. The St. Bede graduate was awarded a $1,000 St. Margaret’s Auxiliary Scholarship and hopes to become a certified nurse midwife or nurse practitioner. She currently lives in LaSalle and is the daughter of Scott Mueller and Ellen Jasiek Mueller.

Eustice follows dad’s footsteps

Eustice, 23, brings a solid playing background in golf, having qualified for state her junior year and sectional her senior year at St. Bede, in addition to playing collegiately at Clarke College. Eustice said she and her golfers have a lot in common.

“My players and I all have something in common: we are young and don’t have much experience in our new roles. But we are willing to learn and improve as much as possible this season,” she said.

“We graduated some excellent players last year, so it is now a matter of figuring out who will step up and be a leader.”

Jim Eustice is proud to see his daughter join him in the coaching ranks.

“I’m happy for her and she’s very excited about this new chapter. It’s great experience for her and we are proud of her,” he said.

So who comes out on top when father and daughter play a round of golf?

“It’s pretty even out on the course,” Jim said.

“My dad always says he’s going to beat me, but we have yet to see that happen,” Sydney joked. “My dad and I are competitive people in general (it has to be genetic), so when we do play it’s always fun.”

Whoever wins, Sydney said they always support one another.

“Between football and golf, our family always has a game or meet to attend. We love to show our support for each other,” she said. “With football pushed to spring, my dad will be attending quite a few golf meets, because he is bored.”

Bos is the new Boss at St. Bede

PERU — Abbi Bosnich played volleyball for St. Bede.

For the last three years, she served as an assistant coach under Karrie Damerell at St. Bede.

Now, Bosnich will lead the Lady Bruin program.

Abbi “It’s kind of hard to Bosnich describe,” Bosnich said about the feeling of taking over at her alma mater. “Being an alum of St. Bede and having had the opportunity to be part of the staff with Karrie the last three years, when the opportunity came up it was just too good for me to pass up.

“I’ve always had a strong passion for volleyball and to be able to be back at St. Bede is pretty special.”

Bosnich played on St. Bede’s lone regional championship volleyball team in 2001 before graduating in 2002.

She hopes to bring that type of success back to the Lady Bruins.

“I think it’s really a benefit having been involved with the program for three years prior to becoming head coach,” Bosnich said. “I feel like Karrie did a great job establishing a program and really instilling a passion for volleyball in the girls as well. I’m excited to continue that tradition. I hope we can have a season this year with everything going on and hopefully have some sort of postseason.

I know when I walk in the gym it’s

hard to look up and see only one regional championship at the Academy. It would be great to be able to put another one up there soon.”

While Bosnich hopes to lead the Lady Bruins to wins and postseason plaques, that’s not her only goal.

“I think every program has the goal of winning a regional and doing well in the postseason,” Bosnich said. “What’s also a large goal of mine as head coach is ensuring we have one program freshman to varsity. It’s really important for all the girls to feel part of St. Bede. Some of my greatest memories are playing sports. I want our kids to have the same memories. We want to win and do well and I think we have a lot of talent returning, but it’s also important to be good people. I think being kind and offering to do for others should come first. If we can do those things, I guarantee we’ll be successful at volleyball.”

Bosnich has an extensive coaching resume besides being a St. Bede assistant the past three years.

She was the head coach at Bureau Valley from 2012-15, leading the Storm to a 27-6 record and a 12-0 Three Rivers Conference East Division mark in 2014.

Bosnich has also been an assistant volleyball coach at IVCC and an assistant basketball coach at Princeton and Bureau Valley.

“I think every job you’re in whether it’s in the education field or as a coach, you can always learning something,” Bosnich said. “Having prior head coaching knowledge I think will help. Something I think

that’s so important, especially in the world right now is just to ensure you’re always learning and to never be too set in your ways. I think that’s

Coach Eustice won’t be walking the sidelines at St. Bede this fall, the football season postponed until next spring.

There will be a Coach Eustice, however, on the links for Putnam County.

Sydney Eustice, the coach’s daughter, has taken over as the boys golf coach for PC. She comes right out of Clarke University, where she golfed for five years, including a redshirt freshmen year. She graduated in May with a teaching degree.

Eustice is teaching sixth grade homeroom and junior high social studies at Holy Family School in Oglesby.

“I am so excited to be coaching,” Eustice said. “I didn’t plan to come right back to the area after graduat-

He will discuss the Underground Railroad that was organized to help runaway slaves seek freedom. This was nothing new to many residents who lived in Ottawa in the 1850s. The Northern District of the Illinois State Supreme Court became the scene of a hearing of a runaway slave Jim Gray who had been arrested in Union County in southern Illinois. The presentation will be both in person and virtual on Facebook and Zoom. A Zoom link will be posted on the library website.

The Oglesby and Mendota Elks lodges announced their 2019-20 Teens of the Year.

The Oglesby winners are Molly Boyd and Sam Maschmann, while the Mendota winners are Katherine Henrikson and Luke Anderson.

Boyd, the daughter of Helen Lenkailis and Michael Boyd, graduated from Putnam County High School.

Boyd was on the high honor roll for all four years and was a member of the National Honor Society.

She played volleyball and basketball all four years and was academic all-conference in both sports. She was co-captain for basketball as a senior and earned the Sportsmanship Award in track and field as a junior.

She was involved in band, was secretary of her class three years and treasurer one year, participated in FFA, 4-H and Interact all four years.

She was vice president of FFA as a junior and served as Interact vice president as a junior and president as a senior. In 4-H, she was secretary for two years before serving as vice president, then president. She also was the 4-H Federation treasurer as a senior and the Putnam County 4-H Ambassador as a junior and senior.

Boyd also volunteered for 20 Miles an Hour, Trick of Treat canned food drive, blood drives and at the Spring Valley nursing home.

Maschmann, the son of Scott and Jennifer Maschmann, is a graduate of St. Bede. He was named an Illinois State Scholar. He was involved in football, scholastic bowl and bass fishing club all four years and wrestled his last three years. He was in choir one year, was involved in the Venturing Club for two years and was a student ambassador his junior and senior years. He was co-captain of the scholastic bowl team his junior and senior years and helped the team to four straight regional titles. He received the Math Award his freshman and junior years. As a sophomore, he earned the Spanish and World History awards. He competed on the WYSE team as a junior and senior. He placed third individually in English while helping the team to regional and sectional championships.

Maschmann plans to attend a fouryear university to study computer science and engineering.

Henrikson, the daughter of David and Karen Henrikson, graduated as valedictorian from Ohio. She was on high honor roll all four years and a member of National Honor Society.

She served as vice president of her class as a freshman, president as a sophomore and treasurer as a junior.

History, tasty Italian cuisine on menu at Mona’s Toluca is a city of less than 1,500 citizens, and yet it has twin Italian restaurants of wide renown located within a short city block of each other.

When you mention it to someone not from central or north-central Illinois, they tend to give you a suspicious, doubtful look.

That’s only because they’ve never been to Mona’s or Capponi’s.

Mona’s – the original, founded in 1933 by Nildo “Mona” Bernardi – eventually led to neighboring Capponi’s (opened in 1934 and a down-the-street competitor until 1965), Bernardi’s (2001 in Washington), Bernardi’s II (2005 in Pontiac) and Bernardi’s Pub and Italian Eatery (2008 in Dunlap) all becoming part of the Bernardi Italian Restaurants family.

Walking in and being treated to an old-world Italian meal, it’s easy to see why the Mona’s way has been so successful for coming up on nine decades.

1. Corporate tax rate is commonly referred to as the general fund and is used for the goods and services provided to the county.

2. The approximate amount of taxes currently collected with the corporate fund rate of .0037 is $658,459, which is dedicated to the general fund. If approved, the approximate amount of taxes to be collected with a corporate rate of .0062 is $1,103,363.04, which will be dedicated to the general fund.

3. For the 2021 levy year the approximate amount of additional taxes against property containing a single-family residence having a fair market value (at the time of the referendum) of $100,000.00 with the homestead exemption applied, is estimated to increase by $68.33. A single-family residence with a fair market value (at the time of the referendum) of $100,000.00 with no exemptions applied is estimated to increase by $83.33.
