Marquis Energy fire draws multiple departments

kshute@shawmedia.com HENNEPIN — Where there’s smoke there’s fire, but in the case of a Wednesday morning dryer fire at Marquis Energy, the alarm was largely precautionary.

Marquis Senior General Counsel Don Rayfield said on Thursday that the fire was contained to a dryer duct, but when it comes to any incident at the ethanol plant, ‘they don’t mess around’.

Rayfield said at about 5 a.m. employees noticed smoke coming from a dryer and called 911. Granville Fire Department, the first on scene, put out a call for mutual aid from other area departments, many of which are staffed by volunteers, to ensure the situation stayed controlled. ‘’We have over 500 trucks of corn delivered per day,” Rayfield said.

“Wet, leftover corn shells have the oil removed, then the rest is used for (distillers grain) for livestock and for export. The fire occurred where the grain is dried.”

Rayfield said Marquis administration still is unsure how the fire started because the plant uses a steam drying process that helps to eliminate fire risk.

“We’re very perplexed how the fire started in the exhaust duct,” he said.

“It’s possible there was a build up of dust from drying that collected in the duct and caught on fire.

“It’s still unclear because they don’t get hot enough, but still it caught fire.”

Firefighters from four counties were dispatched to Marquis Energy for a fire at about 5:45 a.m. Sept. 1. The fire was located inside a pipe in the roof of a dryer building. The pipe was hard to access therefore causing a harder time for firefighters to extinguish. about 8:30 a.m. and several departments stayed on scene until about lunchtime to ensure all the ductwork was cooled.

The ducts were subsequently cleaned out.

“No one was injured or ever in any danger, and the fire did not happen anywhere near the ethanol production side of the plant,” Rayfield said. “There was no permanent damage and we’re back to normal operations.

“We appreciate how quickly everyone got here and are thankful to all the departments and emergency responders.”

The following Ambulance services need to be thanked as well: PC EMS, Lostant, Utica, Peru, Eastern Marshall County and Ottawa. Special thanks to Putnam County Sheriff’s Office Dispatch, Valcom, BuEComm and MABAS for all their assistance. Also thank you to Spratt’s Tap for sending food out to the scene. If we have missed anyone, we apologize and know that we appreciate all the support our community offers.

While it does seem like a big list of agencies and the fire was contained to a small area of the plant, remember that a fire of this nature can suddenly turn and it is better to be prepared and operate in a safe manner than to not have enough help.”

Putnam County School District welcomes new teachers for the 2021-22 school year

Putnam County CUSD 535 has welcomed new staff members for the 2021-22 school year.

Matthew Dwinnells will teach biology and environmental science at Putnam County Junior High. He is a graduate of Northern Illinois University - Biology. He enjoys board games, table top RPG, video games, hanging out with family and friends, and reading sci-fi/fantasy books. He said: “I enjoy the small town vibe and I really enjoyed the personalities of the staff in my interview. Also, I heard great things about the school from a former teacher that I went to college with. I am really excited to be teaching at PCHS and cannot wait to see what this year brings all of us. Thank you for the warm welcome.”

Kristen Grubich will teach special education at Putnam County Elementary School. She is a graduate of Illinois State University Learning Behavior Specialist I. She enjoys spending time with her family, walking and crafting. She said: “In my 15 years as an educator, I have heard only amazing things about the community and school district. I am so excited to be a Panther! I am looking forward to an amazing school year!”

Brianna Downey will teach kindergarten at the Putnam County Primary School. She is a graduate

of Aurora University - Elementary Education. Her hobbies include concerts, spending time with family and being outdoors. She said: “Being here feels like home and my co-teachers are amazing people!”

Taylor Kimble will teach second grade at the Putnam County Primary School. She is a graduate of Northern Illinois University - Early Childhood Education and ESL Endorsement. She enjoys traveling, spending time with family and friends, and anything outdoors. She said: “I completed my student teaching at Putnam County, and I enjoyed my time here so much I jumped on the opportunity to come back.”

Eric Masini will teach fifth grade at Putnam County Elementary School. He is a graduate of Illinois State University - Music Education.

He loves to be on stage in theatrical productions. He has performed in, directed or stage managed over 35 productions. He said: “I fell in love with PC during my time as music teacher because of the rural community’s support in their students’ education. Because I feel very supported, appreciated and known at PC, I knew that when my interests in education started to shift towards general ed that I would only consider switching if something that interested me came up in this school

district. Although it may have come sooner than I expected, the community’s support has been extremely telling as to why PC is the place for me! Thank you so much to the community for all of your support these years that I’ve been at Putnam County! I look forward to growing as a teacher in this community in my new role as fifth grade teacher with your incredible support!”

Anne Downey will teach kindergarten at the Putnam County Primary School. She is a graduate of Illinois State University - Elementary Education. She enjoys spending time at any beach, concerts, reading and being a grandma. She said: “I chose to teach in the PC School District because it is where I attended as a child and where my children also attended during their school years. I didn’t know I wanted to be a teacher until I was a parent volunteer for my own daughter’s kindergarten classroom here at PC and was so inspired by her teacher and from one of my previous PC teachers growing up that I decided to go to college as a mother of two to get my degree. I not only chose PC once but twice as I did spend the last two years elsewhere which was a great school as well but PC is my home. Putnam County is a very special place. I am beyond grateful to be back!”

Blood drive planned for Sept. 10 in Granville

Honor 9-11 by giving blood GRANVILLE — PCHS Interact will sponsor a Red Cross blood drive from 1 to 6 p.m. Friday, Sept. 10, at the American Legion building, 209 N. McCoy St. in Granville. The blood drive is open to students, faculty and staff, and community members. The event is co-sponsored by Putnam County Rotary.

As the drive falls on the day prior to our nation’s tribute to the fallen and first-responders of the tragedies of

9-11-01, it is a fitting remembrance to save other’s lives by donating blood.

Nationwide, due to COVID restrictions and recent natural disasters, blood supplies are dangerously low.

In addition to gifts offered to donors

by Red Cross, units collected at all PCHS blood drives earn Red Cross scholarship money — the more units collected throughout the year, the more Red Cross gives to the school in scholarship dollars.

All donors, and particularly students, are urged to eat breakfast and lunch, and drink plenty of fluids,

before donating. Students age 16 may donate with parent’s written permission on forms available in the school’s front office. All donors must show a photo ID. Masking and social distancing procedures remain in place for the safety of all.

Due to current circumstances, walk-ins are not encouraged and may be turned away. Donors are asked to register by calling 800 RedCross or scheduling online at RedCrossBlood. org. Online pre-registration is also encouraged.

Held every year from Sept. 17-23, the week’s activities and observance are in honor of the U.S. Constitution, the country’s foundational document of national governance.

In the spring of 1787, George Washington, Benjamin Franklin, Alexander Hamilton, James Madison and other prominent leaders gathered in Philadelphia to offset a looming crisis for the new nation. They had just been through one of the rarest events in the history of the world — a war that increased liberty rather than restricted it.

The Articles of Confederation, a blueprint for government that they adopted in the Second Continental Congress in 1777, had proved too weak and ineffective to achieve a balance of power between the new federal government and the states.

Rising to the challenge, our found-

ers crafted a new charter of government — the U.S. Constitution — that has proven to be a masterpiece of political philosophy. It also provided our nation with the resilience to survive trying times and the flexibility to correct past injustices.

Rob McDonald, history professor at United States Military Academy at West Point, said in a recent interview in “American Spirit,” an NSDAR publication, that what he finds most fascinating is the incredible creativity of the founding generation and how they created institutions and promoted beliefs that are still important to us today.

“As we grow and develop as a nation, it’s important that we don’t lose sight of the reason America was created in the first place. History is so important to the health of our republic, and we need to remind ourselves why American exists. Most nations have no real reason to exist, except for the fact that their borders approximate where a group of people who share a similar language, culture or ancestry happen to live.”

“America is different,” he said.

“America is a nation established around a set of ideas, and it has been ethnically and culturally diverse from the beginning. What unites us are the principles our country stands for.”

“We are not perfect people, but neither were the members of the founding generation. They didn’t solve all the world’s problems or all their own problems … but they did make their world a better place. Appreciating their imperfections, humanity and limitations should inspire us,” McDonald said.

“If they could achieve what they did, given all of our advantages, just imagine what’s within our grasp.”

achwine Chapter, NSDAR invites everyone to celebrate the signing of the U.S. Constitution with the “Ringing of the Bells” in conjunction with “Bells Across America.” This marks the beginning of celebrations during Constitution Week, held nationally on Sept. 17-23.

Local churches, courthouses, veteran homes, city governments, city and county employees, schools, polices stations, and firehouses, clubs, and individuals will join millions of others across the USA by ringing bells simultaneously from coast to coast for two minutes, commemorating the signing of the Constitution. The Constitution was signed on Sept. 17, 1787.

If you would like to take part in the observation but do not own bells, use the bell ringer on your cell phone. Be creative, have fun and participate.

George Mason is credited with being the “Father of the Bill of Rights,” which are the first 10 Amendments to the U.S. Constitution. Steadfastly standing up for the people’s rights, Mason was one of three delegates present at the Constitutional Convention in 1787, who refused to sign.

Mason had served as the primary drafter of the Virginia Constitution and Declaration of Rights, a radically liberal document that was adopted two months before the the Declaration of Independence. It summed up boldly the concepts of human freedom, which had been slowly developing through the ages but had never before dared be proposed as the individual rights of man.

The Virginia Declaration began with a statement that all men are born free and have certain inherent rights, including the enjoyment of life and liberty, the means of acquiring and possessing property, and the pursuit of happiness and safety.

These statements were not only influential in Thomas Jefferson’s

introduction to the Declaration of Independence, but also eventually became the basis for the Bill of Rights.

When many of these freedoms were not specifically included in the drafts of the Constitution, Mason bitterly exclaimed that he “would sooner chop off his right hand than put it to the Constitution as it now stands.”

Mason despaired that the convention was rushing to adopt a potentially ruinous central authority.

When the convention adopted the Constitution, Mason was still unhappy with the document and refused to sign it.

After the convention, the states needed to ratify the Constitution.

But many opponents attacked the document for its vagueness and lack of specific protection against tyranny. As a proposed solution, states called for for a bill of rights. James Madison worked tirelessly to persuade legislators to enact amendments, and ultimately 11 states ratified the first 10 amendments to the Constitution, now familiar to Americans as the Bill of Rights.

the cornerstone of not only our Bill of Rights, but also our society’s conception of what having rights means in America.

Becky Perkins has been assisting with the hymns with her ukulele. Members were surprised when Luke Vaessen showed up with his and joined her in playing. The church will continue to host a garden service at 8:30 a.m. on Sundays as long as the weather cooperates.

Sunday school will start at 9 a.m. on Sunday, Sept. 12, and be held two times a month. The group will wear masks and social distance.

On Sunday, Sept. 19, services will include a blessing of pets. Services will be at 8:30 and 10:30 a.m.

Following crowd to check out JACKpots’ draw Every time I’ve driven by JACKpots in Streator since it debuted its new menu, the place has been jam-packed, whether it’s noon, 2 or 7 p.m.

I now understand why.

I ordered the brisket and mac-and-cheese tacos specifically because I thought it sounded funky. I told myself there was no way it could work, but it was delicious: The brisket was tender and flavorful through the cheese and barbecue sauce. I’m still not entirely sure it’s what God intended when he invented the taco, but it’s a creative spin that tied together well.

My fellow diners ordered more traditional meals, one getting the Steakinator, and the other picking the Classic Jack burger. They were kind enough, or perhaps foolish enough, to lend me a bite for review purposes. Yeah. Right.

The Steakinator is a seasoned rib-eye sandwich smothered in caramelized onion, green pepper, pepper Jack cheese and garlic aioli.

Its taste lined up well with what I know of a Philly cheesesteak, and the kick was mild enough that the person who ordered it could handle it.

He’s notoriously anti-spicy food, and the Steakinator struck a good balance of tastes without being too hot.

The Classic Jack is the stereotypical Midwestern cheeseburger, and a darn good one at that. Bacon, lettuce, tomato, onion, pickle, cheese and mayo are all that’s really needed for a good burger, and this one was fresh and juicy. I was only allowed one bite, but had I not consumed three tacos beforehand, I probably would have stolen more.

The whole reason I decided to dine at JACKpots was its Facebook ad for the jumbo flash-fried pretzel, because if I’m anything, I’m a sucker for giant versions of things I already like. Jumbo was an understatement. It came in an

Crispy outside and fluffy inside, it reminded me how long it’s been since I had a good pretzel.

I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention the fries. JACKpots does fries right. They’re crunchy without being burnt, and the inside is still soft. The seasoning isn’t overwhelm-

ing, and they don’t over-salt it. This might seem like small potatoes, but it’s important to me.

Now, I mostly still do carryout instead of dine-in, for reasons more to do with me being a hermit and less to do with the pandemic. However, JACKpots recently built a covered addition with good ambiance off its north side,

featuring a full outdoor bar, fire pits and tables.

Price-wise, JACKpots cost a little over $60 to feed three people, but that easily could be cut down to $40, because all three of us were overly full. I definitely feel I got my money’s worth, as the portion sizes were generous. I strongly recommend JACKpots to anyone who’s still on

the fence, and I look forward to a dining-in experience there in the future.

‘I’ve been trying to get pilots,’ Congressman says after Ottawa visit DEREK BARICHELLO

dbarichello@shawmedia.com Ahead of President Joe Biden’s remarks Aug. 31 acknowledging 100 to 200 American citizens were unable to get out of Afghanistan when the airlift ended Aug. 30, U.S. Rep. Adam Kinzinger said he’s been on the phone with pilots trying to line up alternative solutions for anyone looking to leave.

The Channahon Republican toured Sigan America, LLC Plant in Ottawa on Aug. 31. He said that before his visit, however, he’d been working to help people — notably refugees — who want to get out of Afghanistan.

“On the way here, I’ve been working trying to get pilots in an airplane to fly into a country near Afghanistan to pull more people out, so that’s going to continue and I think we owe it to these folks, especially the ones we promised if they worked with us they would get a special immigrant visa,” Kinzinger said. “I’ve been working this issue for 11 years, since I’ve been in Congress.

“These are exactly the kind of people we want in the United States. People who try to go out there and create a lot of fear around it have no idea what they’re talking about.”

In his address at the White House on Aug. 31, Biden defended his handling of the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan, including the final evacuation from Kabul airport, according to The Associated Press.

Biden said the U.S. government had reached out 19 times since March – before his public announcement that he was going to end the U.S. war – to encourage all American citizens in Afghanistan to leave.

The president said 5,500 Americans eventually got out, and that “arrangements” will be made to get the remaining Americans out if they so choose. Biden said his administration was ready when the U.S.-backed government in Kabul collapsed in mid-August and the Taliban took over.

Kinzinger has been critical of both Biden and President Donald Trump for their administrations handling of removing troops from Afghanistan.

“For me it’s sad we’re in a position where we had to rely on the Taliban to defend the airport,” Kinzinger said. “This idea that they’re somehow going to be a willing partner in the future is naive.”

Kinzinger said although they are rival groups, he doesn’t see any difference between the Taliban and ISIS. “Truthfully, we found out a former Al Qaeda bigwig is under Taliban protection,” Kinzinger said. “I don’t think it’s going to be long until the Taliban cut a deal with ISIS, like they did with Al Qaeda pre-9-11. ‘You can stay here, just lay off us.’ “ Kinzinger said his biggest concern is Afghanistan becoming a breeding ground for terrorism across the world. He said the U.S. was able to

accomplish victories against ISIS in Iraq and Syria by having soldiers embedded in the Middle East.

“We’ll have to see what time says,” Kinzinger said. “I think at this moment we have lost a lot of insight into terrorist organizations, into terrorist growth. There’s a lot of talk about over-the-horizon counterterrorism capacity, but all that basically is, is bombing stuff you know exists.

It’s not the same. I hope I’m wrong, but I worry it’s going to lead to a growth of these terror organizations and ultimately we’ll bear the wrath of that.”

As an Air Force veteran who flew missions in Iraq and Afghanistan, Kinzinger said it’s been hard to put into words what the past month has meant for himself and other veterans he’s talked to, saying it’s mostly confusion at this point.

“It’s kind of a mixture of anger, disappointment, mixture of sadness,”

Kinzinger said. “There’s a little bit of pride on some of the things we were able to achieve, but we’re not monolithic on whether we should stay or leave. In veterans groups there’s differences of opinion, but I think there’s certainly a prevalent sadness.

From the micro-perspective, we achieved a lot, we gave a lot of people freedom and opportunity, but macro, there’s no doubt we lost the war, because we chose to.”

The congressman said that as refugees make their way into the United States, he wouldn’t be opposed to helping them any way he can. He said most of that will come through policy set by Congress. He said Catholic and Lutheran services in Rockford has worked with relocation efforts in the past.

“Any way I can be helpful, the district can be helpful, I’m all in,” Kinzinger said. “There’s a process that goes through Congress.”
