Paddling through Putnam KIM SHUTE

kshute@shawmedia.com PUTNAM — Jason Tomlinson, along with a crew of friends and family, recently borrowed an idea for a paddling trip that he hopes to make a yearly tradition.

Tomlinson and friends decided to set up a trip leaving from the shore of Senachwine Lake in Putnam and paddling to Henry boat ramps.

“We got the idea from a group that has a yearly trip leaving from Henry and paddling to Chillicothe. That trip started at 4 a.m. and ended at 2 p.m. which seemed way too long for us,” Tomlinson said of his decision to start with an alternate route for their trip.

“A lot of us have cabins at Walnut

Grove Resort so word traveled fast about the trip,” he said. “Social media also helped let people know what we were planning.”

Tomlinson said the trip initially started with a group of 10 or so family members and friends, and turned out to be 50-plus by the time they dipped oars in the water.

“We had canoes, kayaks, inflatable kayaks, as well as some homemade boats,” he said. (Shaw Media photographer) Scott Anderson (who ‘s family has a cabin at Walnut Grove) was there taking pictures and had a drone doing flyovers and was able to get shots of the group.”

Tomlinson said the trip was about six miles.

“We had a strong head wind so it

took about five hours from start to finish. We had a couple stops planned on the way to rest up a bit and rehydrate.

We also had some friends following along in a pontoon and a couple fishing boats just in case we needed anything.”

“It was a fun day that ended back at Walnut Grove where we had a cookout and some live entertainment, Tomlinson said.

“Scott also had a foam machine for the kids, and some of us adults, to enjoy.

“For the little planning we had done it was a great turn out and a fun day for everyone. We plan on making this a yearly event and will make changes I’m sure as we go.” * See photos from the trip on Page 15.

Area libraries receive per capita grant

Secretary of State and State Librarian Jesse White awarded $18.1 million in Illinois Public Library Per Capita and Equalization Aid Grants to 638 public libraries serving almost 12 million patrons, including several libraries in Putnam, Marshall, Bureau, LaSalle and Livingston counties.

“Public Act 102-0039 allowed my office to award these grants at $1.475 per capita, an increase from the previous rate of $1.25,” White said in a press release. “I am extremely proud of the outstanding service Illinois’ public libraries provide to all residents. I truly believe libraries are cornerstones of our communities, and I am pleased to provide this increased funding to help them serve the public.”

Per Capita Grant funding is authorized under Illinois library law for public libraries, which allows resources for expenses, such as materials, personnel, equipment, electronic access, telecommunications and technology. Equalization Aid Grants help qualifying public libraries with a low library tax base ensure a minimum level of funding for library services.

Some of the services public libraries provide with grant money include the following: • Large print material for aging patrons

Chief Senachwine Chapter, NSDAR is proud to celebrate the 234th anniversary of our nation’s Constitution, which was adopted by the American Congress of the Confederation in Sept. 17, 1787.

Between the adoption of the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence announcing and justifying the birth of a new nation in 1776, a new type of government had to be created.

What resulted was a loose friendship among the states called “The Articles of Confederation,” adopted in 1777.

At the time, the states felt like they were more important than the nation as a whole, and this attitude is reflected in the Articles. The drafters didn’t even capitalize “The United States,” but used lowercase letters when writing about them.

The Articles of Confederation were lacking, and the need for a stronger federal government soon became apparent. The following are a few examples of the document’s weaknesses: * There was no chief executive or a permanent national capital.

* There were no federal courts. * There was no national currency. * Each state printed its own money and decided its value. * Congress could ask for taxes but had no way to collect. * There were no trade regulations. * Congress could not afford to pay for even a 300-man army and therefore, had to depend on state militias.

By 1787 the situation had become so bad that Alexander Hamilton and others recommended that the Continental Congress authorize a new convention to revise the Articles. The culmination of months of deliberation, debate and compromise resulted in the Constitution of the United States.

This year, from September 17-23, Americans from the 50 states will join in celebrating Constitution Week. The celebration’s goals are threefold: to encourage the study of the historical events that led to the framing of the Constitution in September 1787; to inform people that the Constitution is the basis of America’s great heritage and the

foundation of our way of life; and to emphasize U.S. citizens’ responsibility to protect, defend and preserve the Constitution.

The week is dedicated to the Constitution and to “We, the People.”

by President Dwight D. Eisenhower.

The first 10 Amendments of the Constitution are known as The Bill of Rights, and were drafted almost immediately following the Constitutional Convention in 1787. The most recent Amendment was originally proposed Sept.

25, 1789; but was ratified May 7, 1992.

NEWS BRIEFS Chief Senachwine DAR chapter will open chapter year Sept. 3

HENRY — The opening meeting of the 2021-22 year of the Chief Senachwine Chapter NSDAR will be held at the Henry Presbyterian Church, 511 Wirt St., at 1:30 p.m. Friday Sept. 3.

Refreshments will be served followed by the start of the meeting at 1:45 p.m.

The program will be presented by Director Trisha Schafer whose topic will be “Freedom House: a Safe Haven Serving Our Communities.”

A year ago chapter members participated in Project Oops, filling women’s purses with personal care items for the women and children sheltering at Freedom House.

Members are invited to bring an item to donate to Freedom House, such as TP, box of Kleenex, roll of paper towels, laundry detergent, dish soap, kitchen/bathroom cleaning spray, etc.

Constitution Week, Sept. 17-23, will be commemorated. Members are reminded to ring bells in celebration on Wednesday, Sept. 17, at 3 p.m. CST when DAR chapters and other celebrants will ring bells coast to coast, remembering the adoption of the U.S. Constitution.

DAR displays may be noted in various

locations. Also noted will be a report on Veterans’ Walk at Stoner Park.

‘Rosie’s Reply’ one of two surviving bombers with combat experience Thrill seekers and history buffs will get a chance to ride in a B-25 bomber in Peru.

The airplane, nicknamed “Rosie’s Reply,” will arrive at about 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 18, at the Illinois Valley Regional Airport, 4251 Ed Urban Drive.

“The flight crew is excited to fly to Peru for two reasons,” said Yankee Air Museum president Kevin Walsh. “The first is that the aviation instruments made at the Westclox company have cemented Peru’s role in aviation history. The second is that the Illinois Valley Regional Airport has a sterling reputation for awesome World War II aviation events, such as the largest gathering of TBM Avengers in the world. We are honored to be at the great airport that hosts this event.”

The Yankee Air Museum of Ypsilanti, Mich. has refinished one of the fastest and most aggressive bombers of the same type, best known for serving in the Doolittle Raid. Rosie’s Reply is of

dual significance to both military and civilian history. It was built largely by thousands of women on the home front collectively known as Rosie the Riveters.

But it is also one of two surviving B-25 bombers with combat experience.

The aircraft was based out of Corsica and flew eight missions over Italy in 1944. Rosie’s Reply thus honors both the men who fought abroad and the women who entered the industrial manufacturing workforce.

The aircraft will not only be available to see up close but also for visitors to book rides and take a flight. Riders sit where combat crews sat and experience the thrill of flying on a rare aircraft.

“A ride in a World War II bomber with combat experience is, hands down, the most unique and memorable experience you could ask for,” Walsh said. “This aircraft is so maneuverable for a bomber that air crews would clamor to fly such an agile aircraft.

You will feel this immediately when you join us for a flight over Peru.”

Walsh said Air Adventure rides would begin at about 11:30 a.m. and continue into the afternoon. Air

Red Cross seeks blood donors to fill critical need

As fall approaches, the American Red Cross urges eligible donors to help end the ongoing critical need for blood and kick off the season with a blood donation. The Red Cross needs donors of all blood types to give now and help ensure lifesaving transfusions are on the sidelines for those who rely on them.

While summer winds down, the Red Cross is concerned that the rise in COVID-19 cases due to the Delta variant and a potentially active hurricane season may further challenge the ability to collect and meet hospital demand. In recent weeks, the Red Cross has seen blood donor turnout decline by nearly 10% while hospital demand continues to outpace donations. This decline is believed to be due to multiple reasons, including the continued effects of the pandemic on blood drive cancellations and donor availability as well as back-to-school preparations for many families.

Make a game plan to donate — patients are relying on the kindness of blood and donors for their continued treatment. Schedule an appointment to give blood by using the Red Cross Blood Donor App, visiting RedCrossBlood.org, calling 800-RED CROSS (800-733-2767) or enabling the Blood Donor Skill on any Alexa Echo device.

As a thank you, those who give Sept. 3-7 will receive a new, 16-ounce Red Cross campfire mug, while supplies last.

Sport Clips Haircuts and Red Cross partnership helps

Having a stable blood supply is the

best defense against a shortage. This September, donors can do good and look good when they give blood or platelets as part of the Red Cross and Sport Clips “Tackle the Need. Give Blood” campaign.

Those who give blood or platelets Sept. 1-30 will receive a coupon for a free haircut via email several days after their donation. The coupon will be valid through Nov. 30, 2021, at participating Sport Clips locations. Donors must have a valid email address on record to receive the coupon.

The Red Cross and Sport Clips encourage donors to use the hashtag #TackleTheNeed to share their new looks and invite others to give.

Health insights for donors

At a time when health information

has never been more important, the Red Cross is screening all blood, platelet and plasma donations from self-identified African American donors for the sickle cell trait. This additional screening will provide Black donors with an additional health insight and help the Red Cross identify compatible blood types more quickly to help patients with sickle cell disease. Blood transfusion is an essential treatment for those with sickle cell disease, and blood donations from individuals of the same race, ethnicity and blood type have a unique ability to help patients fighting sickle cell disease.

Donors can expect to receive sickle cell trait screening results, if applicable, within one to two weeks through the Red Cross Blood Donor App and the online donor portal at RedCrossBlood.org.

Each Red Cross blood drive and donation center follows the highest standards of safety and infection control, and additional precautions – including face masks for donors and staff, regardless of vaccination status – have been implemented to help protect the health of all those in attendance. Donors are asked to schedule an appointment prior to arriving at the drive.

The LaSalle County Health Department received confirmation a crow from Utica and a crow from Streator tested positive for West Nile virus.

The Streator bird was collected and tested Friday and the Utica bird was collected and tested Thursday. Environmental Health staff was able to conduct the confirmatory test on the birds at the health department. Additional West Nile virus activity for 2021 includes mosquitoes that tested positive on Wednesday in Ottawa.

West Nile virus is transmitted through the bite of a a house mosquito, which has picked up the virus by feeding on an infected bird. Common symptoms include fever, nausea, headache and muscle aches. Symptoms may last from a few days to a few weeks. Four out of five people infected

with West Nile virus will not show any symptoms. In rare cases, severe illness including meningitis or encephalitis, or death, can occur. People older than 60 and individuals with weakened immune systems are at higher risk for severe illness from West Nile virus.

Monitoring for West Nile virus includes laboratory tests for mosquito batches, dead crows, blue jays and robins, as well as testing humans with West Nile virus-like symptoms. People who observe a sick or dying crow, blue jay, or robin should contact the health department, which will determine if the bird will be picked up for testing.

There are some simple precautions residents can take to protect themselves from West Nile.

or replace screens that have tears or other openings. Try to keep doors and windows shut. Repel: When outdoors, wear shoes and socks, long pants and a longsleeved shirt, and apply insect repellent that contains DEET, picaridin, oil of lemon eucalyptus or IR 3535, according to label instructions. Consult a physician before using repellents on infants.

Report locations where you see water sitting stagnant for more than a week such as roadside ditches, flooded yards, old tires, stagnant pools, or other unattended water holding containers that may produce mosquitoes.

The local health department or city government may be able to add larvicide to the water, which will kill any mosquito eggs.

Fresh ingredients make Sam’s Pizza stand out I was not planning to eat at Sam’s Pizza this week until a coworker told me it was the best in Ottawa, quite the claim given Ottawa’s selection of pizza places. I gave it a try.

I’m not quite ready to make a declaration that strong, but my recent bias makes me want to. It took little to sell me on Sam’s. The big, fluffy, well-seasoned, handmade breadsticks will give any pizza place a spot in my heart before I ever take a look at the pizza. They were every bit as delicious as they looked. And they come cinnamon or regular.

I selected a 20-inch Sam’s Special, a pizza with cheese, sausage, pepperoni, green pepper, onion and mushroom, a departure from my typical order of just pepperoni and sausage. It was worth every penny, because there were enough leftovers to feed me for the next week.

The Sam’s Special stands out because of all the flavor.

The multiple types of cheeses, and the kick from the pepperoni and green pepper complement each other well, and the mushroom keeps it all from being too much at once.

Overall, it took about four of the square slices to feel like I couldn’t eat any more.

I also had a large order of cheese bread, which comes with marinara sauce. It is surprising how much is packed into what’s basically pizza without the sauce: For anyone looking for something lighter than a full pizza, this is a good option. It also gave me the opportunity to taste the cheese by itself, and it truly is outstanding.

Overall, it cost about $50 to feed three people, and we had a lot left over.

On the menu, you will find pizza featuring barbecue chicken with a sweet and tangy barbecue sauce paired with mozzarella.

School’s back, so please slow down and pay attention when children may be around For the past year and a half, when we’ve driven by schools, many motorists may have wondered if there were children inside. Should you slow to the posted school speed limit?

Today, as schools reopen for the fall, the answer is unquestionably yes, because all public school children have returned to school amid the pandemic. Yellow school buses are filling the roads in the early morning, midday and afternoon hours. It’s a welcome sight, but one that requires extra caution. Drivers need to slow down and pay attention when children may be around.

According to National Safety Council research, most of the children killed in bus-related incidents are ages 4 to 7, and they’re walking. They are hit by the bus, or by a motorist illegally passing a stopped bus.

Besides buses, drivers also need to be even more aware of children walking to school and riding their bikes. And parents have to be more aware of the rules schools have set for drop-off and pickup of children.

The National Safety Council offers motorists school safety tips.

If you’re dropping off:

• Don’t double park; it blocks visibility for other children and vehicles.

• Don’t load or unload children across the street from the school.

With school opening for the fall, there are more school buses on the road. Motorists need to slow down and watch out for children.

• Carpool to reduce the number of vehicles at the school.

Sharing the road with school buses:

• If you’re driving behind a bus, allow a greater following distance than if you were driving behind a car.

• Never pass a bus from behind – or from either direction if you’re on an undivided road – if it is stopped to load or unload children • If a school bus’ yellow or red lights are flashing

• When turning left and a bicyclist is approaching from the opposite direction, wait for the rider to pass.

• If you’re turning right and a bicyclist is approaching from behind on the right, let the rider go through the intersection first, and always use your turn signals.

• Watch for bikes coming from driveways or behind parked cars.

• Check side mirrors before opening your door.

A few other precautions to keep children safe:

• Don’t block the crosswalk when stopped at a red light or waiting to make a turn, forcing pedestrians to go around you; this could put them in the path of moving traffic.

• Always stop for a school patrol officer or crossing guard holding up a stop sign.

• Never pass a vehicle stopped for pedestrians.

Let’s all do our part to practice extra care and caution on the road to make sure this is a safe school year.

Could vaccine mandates permanently separate Democrats, unions?

Political affiliations are not immutable, and we may be witnessing the outset of a seismic shift.

When the U.S. Food and Drug Administration gave full approval to Pfizer’s COVID-19 vaccine Monday, it was only a matter of time before governments began following the private sector by mandating workers get inoculated.

Gov. JB Pritzker tipped the first domino earlier in the month when he required vaccinations by Oct. 4 for all state employees who work in places such as veterans’ homes and prisons.

Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot laid down a huge marker with Wednesday’s dictum that all city workers be fully vaccinated by Oct. 15.

The Chicago Federation of Labor and Fraternal Order of Police raised concerns (putting it mildly) about Lightfoot’s edict, then the American Federation of State, County and

Without analyzing which position is most likely to succeed, it doesn’t seem a stretch to suggest that depending on how firmly everyone digs in, this standoff could be a turning point in the historic alignments of organized labor.

In the 2018 gubernatorial election the Illinois AFL-CIO, Illinois Education Association and Illinois Federation of Teachers led the way in endorsing Pritzker while incumbent Gov. Bruce Rauner campaigned on his

desire to weaken the power of organized labor. AFSCME in particular was one of Rauner’s most outspoken opponents.

Not every member votes unilaterally, and not every union backs a blue candidate. When the subject is saving nuclear plants, Republicans and labor find themselves aligned. For every story about Republicans lamenting the influence of organized teachers, there’s one about Democrats challenging the power of police unions. The Chicago FOP has been at odds with Lightfoot since before her election, while her Democratic opponents split up the labor endorsement pie.

Perhaps the vaccine skirmish will be resolved without lasting political implications. But it’s worth watching – especially if the dispute lingers – to see if there are any notable changes in campaign contributions, endorsements and turnout. It’s not hard to find candi-

dates who oppose any sort of vaccine mandate, and if those actors can make peace with labor on other fronts, the potential for significant realignment is tangible.
