The Shaw family of Granville enjoyed visiting Darrell Alleman’s farm this past weekend for another day of summer family fun.

Last month, Alleman held the popular Field of Dreams event, and after moving dozens of pieces of restored antique farm equipment from his barn and onto the different positions around the ball diamond, he provided families, friends and visitors with an impressive antique display, as well as a delicious and complimentary barbeque lunch.

GRANVILLE — Unable to find a part-time law enforcement officer to provide a police presence, the village of McNabb has turned to their neighbors for help.

During the Aug. 15 board meeting, the village of Granville heard a request from McNabb President Brandy Sandberg to enter into a contract in which Granville would provide part-time patrols.

A similar agreement is already in place with the village of Standard. Granville President, Jared Baker said if they agreed, the contract would essentially be the same as Standard’s.

Currently, Standard pays $15,000 a year for a 20-hour a day, seven days a week access to police availability. Officers are present within Standard at various times over seven nights and three days a week.

“We’d be happy with anything Granville can give us because it’d be better than what we have now. We have no expectations; we just want some kind of police presence in our village and for someone to respond if needed,” Sandberg said.

She said McNabb has its own squad car and a dedicated office space. She added an officer is needed to help with ordinance enforcement, dog issues, speeding and student safety near the school.

County leaves salt on the table

Board asks for breakdown of bids for salt storage shed and foundation

BY DAVE COOK news@putnamcountyrecord.com HENNEPIN — The construction of the new Putnam County (PC) salt storage shed has been tabled by the county board until the itemized bids for its planned concrete work are reviewed.

PC highway engineer Pat Sloan said the old shed in Hennepin, which he estimated was in excess of 50 years old, suffered severe storm damage earlier in the year, and its demolition was recently completed.

The county only received two bids for the concrete foundation work, the lowest at approximately $54,000. Board member Luke Holly questioned why there were only two bids and suggested the county find a way to increase the amount of bidders for future projects. He said only receiving two to three bids per project has become typical.

“I think for this amount we should re-bid,” Holly said.

After the board failed to make a motion to approve the existing bid, discussion began about the possibility of re-bidding the work.

Sloan said it was getting late in the year; that re-bidding wouldn’t likely result in a lower bid; and added for the work required, which includes a reinforced, 8-foot thick floor and 1-foot thick walls capable of withstanding 100 mph winds, the bid seemed reasonable.

Rather than delaying the job with the proper, yet lengthy re-bidding procedures, PC Board Chairman Steve Malavolti suggested the board review the bids in an itemized format, so they could see the line by line costs involved. The board then approved the tabling of the discussion until its next meeting.

Sloan said the low responsible bid for the building portion of the project was approximate-

ly $30,000, and the costs were reduced by the design work being completed in-house by structural engineers.

Two remaining road projects which are scheduled for completion soon are repairs to the McNabb blacktop and work to correct the areas of Bottom Road which get washed over during heavy rains.

In other board news: • The board approved moving $3,000 from the county’s Contingency Fund to the Automation Fund in order to help the circuit clerk’s office meet the costs of the state mandated e-filing requirements.

• PC EMA coordinator Bob Cofoid reported their tent and cooling area at the recent Marshall-Putnam Fair received a good response, and improvements were going to be made which would provide an even better experience for future fair-goers.

• Cofoid congratulated PC EMA assistant coordinator Chauntelle Biagi-Bruer for completing the Professional Development Series course work and receiving certification from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).

• Biagi-Bruer and Tiffany Moodie, from the Marshall-Putnam Farm Bureau, presented a review of a new portal website which has been launched through a $5,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

The website is part of the Strengthening Economies Together program and functions as a way to provide regional information and promote the assets of Marshall, Putnam and Stark counties. Through the website at www.mpsplan.com, detailed information can be found on various demographics; investment incentives; communities; available sites and resources; and tourism.

The Bureau/Putnam County Health Department makes routine and unannounced visits each month to various food service establishments in Bureau and Putnam counties to inspect the operations.

Health inspectors use an identical scorecard at each facility, where they check for health code compliance in 45 areas. Each area carries a rating from one to five, with five being the most critical. Inspectors check the entire operations of the facility in 14 different categories, such as food protection, personnel, and garbage and refuse disposal Beginning with a score of 100 points, the health inspector deducts one to five points for every violation.

The final total is the facility’s inspection report score.

A passing food inspection score is 65 or above.

At 65, the Bureau/Putnam County ordinance allows the health department to close an establishment, but a score doesn’t have to be that low for the department to close it. It depends on the number of critical and non-critical violations and the type of violations. Certain combinations can create a domino effect for food borne outbreaks.

Granville Board member Jim Pettit said his main concern was leaving Granville unprotected. The Granville Police Department currently has three, full-time and five, part-time officers.

“The town will suffer, period.

We’ve got a lot of ordinances here for our officers to deal with,” Granville Board member Lucian Verda said.

“Going into this, Kevin (Granville Chief of Police Kevin Moore) knows Granville would be his priority, just as he went into Standard knowing Granville was his priority.

If something were to happen, he’d be back here. I feel the amount of time it would interfere with something happening in Granville would be far less than helping another community,” board member Tina Dolder said.

Dolder also pointed out McNabb is approximately only seven miles and 13 minutes away from Granville.

Standard is roughly three miles and five minutes from Granville.

The board said if it did agree it would be on a one-year trial basis with Moore adding he’d like to try it. The decision was tabled pending a discussion between Granville’s police committee members, and the board said they’d announce their decision at the next board meeting scheduled for Sept. 5.

“McCoy Street is falling through the cracks again; this is our second year of serious talks about fixing it, and it’s only going to get more expensive. The problem is not going to go away. We need to work on how we’re going to finance it,” Verda said of the long-needed project estimated to cost approximately $680,000.

Village engineer Mike Richetta of Chamlin & Associates said while some initial design work has been completed, the project isn’t “shovel ready.”

The prospect of raising taxes was raised by both Dolder and during the public comment portion of the meeting by resident Bob Fescenmeyer.

“I think the taxpayers would be willing to pay more to have a nicer street to drive on,” Dolder said.

“This may be the time to raise taxes. You’ve got to fix this; you need the money to repair all the things that are always coming up, and it’s only going to get worse,” Fescenmeyer said to the board.

The board decided it would research the different financing options available to the village.

Sewer inspections Richetta said portions of the village’s sewers have been inspected in regards to the widespread flooding earlier in the year caused by heavy rains, and they’re in the process of identifying homes which may have drainage tiles connected to the sewer lines.

Another year’s window of opportunity for construction projects is rapidly closing, and Granville is

“If there are kids who want to raise chickens for their 4-H projects, they should be able to do it as long as they’re caged, and there are no roosters,” Dolder said.

Verda said there’s already an ordinance in place prohibiting farm animals within the village.

“Is a chicken not a farm animal?” he asked.

“I think we discussed this last year and were talking about five chickens and no roosters,” Pettit said.

“Yes, and it was tabled just like everything else,” Dolder pointed out.

She added there are already chickens within the village, and Verda agreed, adding they bother some residents which is why an ordinance shouldn’t be approved.

As multiple discussions overlapped, the board appeared to be in agreement that if an ordinance was eventually passed, no roosters would be allowed and neither would free-range roaming. The number of hens allowed and the distance of the coop from the property line remained undecided.

While not ready for action, the board did discuss the possibility of an ordinance allowing chickens within Granville.

The board approved the $1,698.56 purchase of two wireless cameras which will be installed at the village gas tank and yard waste center.

Women Inspired Network grant-seekers advance Sunday, July 30, marked the latest Women Inspired Network (WIN) meeting, held at the Dickinson House in Oglesby. A summary of the grant applications submitted by local non-profit agencies and selected by the WIN Grant Review Committee to advance to the full membership vote were presented.

At the upcoming Sept.

24 meeting, representatives from each of the nominated agencies will make a full grant presentation to the membership. Voting by WIN members will begin Oct. 1, and WIN grant(s) will be awarded at the Celebration of Giving in November.

Grant finalists include: Starved Rock Regional Center, who will use grant dollars to enhance the Illinois Valley Autism Resource Center, providing resources to families living with a child experiencing autism.

Freedom House, located in Princeton and serving five counties will use grant funds to continue the Youth Empowerment Program, a series of five week-

long summer camps for pre-teen boys and girls to improve self-esteem, promote a positive body image, and to teach techniques to prevent bullying.

ADV/SAS provides in-person counseling and advocacy services to victims/survivors of domestic violence and sexual violence in LaSalle and Livingston counties. Grant dollars will be used to establish and outfit a new office at a Mendota location. ADV/SAS has also requested grant money to develop and accelerate an aggressive domestic violence and sexual assault awareness campaign.

MICHAEL FASSINO

TRI-DENT DRUG TASK FORCE

PHILADELPHIA — Michael Joseph Fassino, born on Dec. 31, 1955, originally from Granville, passed away Wednesday, Aug. 9, 2017, in his Philadelphia home, surrounded by family.

He passed away after a courageous two-year battle with lung cancer.

After graduating from Putnam County High School in 1973, Mike enrolled in Southern Illinois University Carbondale, where he received a degree in philosophy. He then attended Princeton University and received an MBA. A lover of many things, Mike found a perfect balance between work and family. Mike was the director of marketing intelligence at BAYADA Home Health Care. He was affectionately known among his coworkers as, “The Smartest Man at BAYADA.” Mike deeply loved data and the career it gave him, but he only worked as hard as he did in order to provide for his family because, for Mike, family came first. His favorite activities with his family were visiting Ridley Creek State Park, watching Phillies baseball and cooking pancakes.

Mike was preceded in death by his father, Peter J. Fassino Jr., and is survived by his mother, Charlene Fassino of Granville; his brothers, James (Sally) Fassino of Dunlap and David (Annie) Fassino of Melbourne, Fla.; his sister, Judith Barlow of Spring Valley; his children, Nicholas Fassino and Emily Fassino of Media, Pa.; and his ex-wife, best friend and confidant, Susanne Fassino of Ridley Park, Pa.

ISP to conduct checks on seat belts, safety seats LASALLE — Illinois State Police (ISP) District 17 announced it will conduct Occupant Restraint Enforcement Patrols (OREP) in LaSalle County in August.

OREPs allow the ISP to focus on safety belt and child safety seat laws.

Illinois law requires all vehicle passengers (front and back) to be buckled up.

Safety belts are still one of the most effective safety devices in vehicles, estimated to save nearly 14,000 lives each year.

Half of vehicle occupants killed in a traffic crash were not properly buckled up. The objective of this program is to increase occupant restraint compliance through education, child seat inspections and enforcement.

LASALLE — A Plano man was arrested Aug. 8, on a Class X felony drug charge following an investigation into cocaine sales in Peru by the Tri-DENT Drug Task Force.

According to a press release issued by Tri-DENT, George M. Pozeg, 46, was charged with unlawful delivery of a controlled substance — cocaine, more than 15 grams, but less than 100 grams.

Seeing red in more ways than one I

was in a retail store the other day. The item I needed to buy was small and inexpensive. I did have a question about the item, so I patiently waited until the four or five other customers had left before I went to the counter to ask the clerk my question. When I think back, it was a silly question, but nevertheless I did want to see if the store might have the item I needed in another color.

OK, there was nobody in line.

Actually, I don’t even know if there was anyone else in the store at all except maybe another employee.

“HI,” I said somewhat cheerfully.

The clerk looked at me without saying a word. Actually, she just kind of glared at me. I didn’t let her demeanor affect me.

Sometimes when I say “Hi” to a clerk and they don’t answer me, I say it again — kind of proving a point that I said “Hi,” and he/she couldn’t either muster up a response. The look

on her face told me otherwise.

Instead, I went right on with my question: “I really like this. Do you know if you folks have it in another color? Maybe gray or blue or even green or black. I’m just not fond of the red,” I said with a smile.

Apparently I was the only one wearing a smile that day. Her response to me was: “Did you see it in another color? If you didn’t, then we don’t have it.

That’s simple.” The clerk turned her back on me and dismissed my question and myself. I stood there holding the red item, and quite frankly, I was kind of flabbergasted by her response.

It wasn’t like she had eight or 10 other customers. It wasn’t like she was busy stocking shelves. It wasn’t like the telephone was ringing, and she had to answer it. She dismissed me with gusto, and to this day, I still haven’t forgotten it.

At this point, I had a few options. What I really wanted to do was give Broom Hilda a good lesson in customer service. I

Another option was to write down that 800 number you always see at the stores, where you can voice a complaint or a problem. I never really think those 800 numbers do much good, but if nothing else, they at least make the customer feel better.

Instead, I put the red item back and left the store. I sat in my Jeep for a good five minutes — kind of fuming, but then realizing it shouldn’t be that big of a deal. I vowed to myself I’d never go back in that store, but I knew that wasn’t really true either.

To the Editor, We can accomplish so much when we are not worried about who claims the credit.

That is the essence of a new partnership between the Illinois State Treasurer’s Office and The Chicago Lighthouse, formerly known as The Chicago Lighthouse for the Blind.

Lighthouse is a world-renowned social service organization serving veterans and people who are blind, visually impaired and disabled. Since 1906, it has provided vision rehabilitation services, education, employment opportunities and assistive technology for people of all ages.

To help pay for these services, Lighthouse has revenue-generating partnerships with private corporations and public entities.

One of these services is operating a customer call center. This month, the state treasurer’s office became a partner.

Lighthouse will offer customer care support for our electronic banking and payment services, called ePAY. Created in 2002, ePAY provides a safe, timely and competitively priced payment tool for units of local government that offer electronic payment of bills. ePAY accepts credit cards, bank cards and electronic checks either online, at point of sale, or by telephone. More than 600 local governments use ePAY, including cities, counties, libraries, and park districts. Community colleges and universities also can benefit from ePAY. Lighthouse focuses on professional development, retention and advancement of employees, so I anticipate exceptional customer service that will allow for 95 percent of ePAY questions to be resolved within one business day.

And then I said to her what I truly believe: “We are all fighting some kind of a battle.”

Nine words. Not difficult to remember, but oh so very important. Don’t you think?

I think we need to constantly remind ourselves of those nine important words every day.

Actually, I understand why those nine words are difficult to remember. After all, we are so involved in our own worlds, our own lives, our own family and friends, so often it’s difficult to think of others when we are so caught up in our own issues, problems and more.

But everyone — and I mean everyone — is fighting a battle.

Big battles, small ones, petty ones, life and death ones — it doesn’t matter. Battles are battles.

We need to be kind — even when others are not. Perhaps it’s all as simple as that.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR Partnership helps veterans/ visually impaired

And so it was about two weeks later when lo and behold ... go figure ... I found myself back in that same store. I wasn’t praying, but I was sure hoping Broom Hilda wouldn’t be working. Of course I was wrong.

I glanced at her behind the counter; she glanced at me, and I could feel my blood pressure rise a bit.

On that day, I needed something simple. Again, one item, but I didn’t need any help from anyone. I took my item to Broom Hilda’s cash register (sometimes I am a glutton for punishment), and that’s when she looked me in the eye and said: “I wasn’t very nice to you a couple of weeks ago,” she said.

“I was having a really bad day.

I had to have my cat put to sleep that morning, and I wasn’t coping well.” Finally, she looked me in the eye — tears brimming in her own. “I’m sorry,” she said.

I was ironically quiet for a few moments, until I swallowed hard and said, “I get it. That had to be a difficult day for you.

Are you better now?” I asked.

’m writing this column from my hotel room in Roswell, New Mexico. Roswell is, of course, famous for the alleged alien crash landing that happened in 1947.

Roswell also happens to be the last leg of my family’s summer vacation. We opted for a two-week vacation instead of our customary one week because we had a lot of places we’ve always wanted to visit.

My husband had absolutely no interest in visiting Roswell and hearing about aliens, but my son and I couldn’t wait to get here. While it’s been a blast hearing about the supposed cover-up at Roswell (and I’ll keep my opinion about that to myself), most of the alien-like sightings we’ve had during this trip haven’t been at Roswell.

They’ve been at the slew of national parks we’ve visited on our trip – places like Yellowstone, Grand Canyon, White Sands National Monument, the Grand Tetons and Lake Mead.

We had planned for months to visit these places, but we only learned right before we left that we qualified for free entry into all national parks we visited because my child had just completed fourth grade. Under a program established by then President Barack Obama, all fourth-graders and their families receive free entry into any of the national parks they visit.

Hopefully, this program continues, so more families can experience the natural beauty these parks have to offer.

While we would have visited these places regardless of what we were charged to see them, having free access saved us a bundle.

I think introducing kids who are in middle school to national parks is a great idea because they are at such an

COMMENTARY Shannon Serpette influential age. A trip to Yellowstone may put them on a career path they may have never considered.

Plus, it gives them a sense of ownership. My daughter felt like a special guest of the parks we entered. She had her own card that gave us free access, and the employees would ask where our fourth-grader was when we pulled up to the admission gates. She’d wave her hand like a celebrity, and we’d get right in. And now, as our trip is winding down, that card will serve as a unique souvenir of the biggest trip we’ve ever taken together.

It will help her remember the mind-blowing things we saw, the natural landscapes that made us feel like we were the aliens on a whole different planet entirely. That card will remind her of the world-famous geysers we saw at Yellowstone, and the things we didn’t even know existed like the colorful geyser basins and the Dragon’s Mouth formation that hinted at the enormous volcanic pressure under our feet at Yellowstone.

Years from now, that card may spark a memory for her of the half-mile walk we took down into the Grand Canyon – a walk that consisted of a narrow dirt path and no handrails in sight. Although we had all obviously heard of the wonder of the Grand Canyon, hearing about it and seeing it in person are two different things entirely. Walking down that pathway, I felt like a visitor on the planet I have lived on all my life. It was completely foreign from anything I had ever seen.

Another alien-like place we visited was White Sands National Monument in New Mexico. The giant white sand dunes there are completely cool to the touch, unlike beach sand.

The dunes are so tall, we rented sleds to slide down them as if it was winter in summertime.

I couldn’t let my kids have all the fun so I slid down them too, laughing as I wiped out on the particularly steep dunes. The whole landscape seemed like something you might see in Star Wars movies instead of here on Earth.

But while the landscape we saw may have seemed extraterrestrial, we also saw flashes of human creativity and ingenuity everywhere we went.

There were roads built through mountains and tales about people conquering the wilderness of the Grand Canyon long before they had any sort of technology to help them.

We saw a bottle forest in California – a man had created it alongside the highway.

For whatever reason when he looked at an empty bottle, he didn’t see it as junk. He saw it as a piece of a glass tree and he built a forest of those trees for people to enjoy at no cost.

It might seem like a strange thing to do, but it was a spectacular sight.

I’ve always been fascinated by the idea of aliens, ever since I was little. But as it turns out, you don’t have to look to the skies to spot something that looks like it belongs on another world. You just have to explore the places and people that are already on our planet.

There’s still plenty of wonder here if you look hard enough.

PC boys beat Princeton, Mendota MCNABB — The Putnam County boys golfers won a triangular on Aug. 14 at Edgewood Park in McNabb over Princeton and Mendota.

The Panthers scored 148 as a team led by medalist Caleb Dzierzynski with a 31.

Other PC golfers’ scores were Ben Cy (38), Auston Pflibsen (39), Ian Roach (40) and Luke Griffith (71).

DNA specialist to speak PRINCETON — The Bureau County Genealogical Society has selected Steve Szabados to be the speaker at its Thursday, Aug. 24, meeting which is free and open to the public.

The group will meet at 7 p.m. at the Society library, 629 S. Main St. in Princeton.

Szabados is a genealogical lecturer, and his content will be based on his own experiences with DNA testing. He promises that his presentation will be delivered in a practical way and that one does not need an extensive scientific background in order to understand his message. He wants to present information so that the audience will be able to determine if a DNA

test would be worthwhile for their research and what results they could expect from each type offered.

Szabados has degrees from the University of Illinois and Northern Illinois University, and has traced his ancestors back to the 1600s in New England and others to the 1730s in Poland, Germany, Bohemia and Slovenia. He is also the author of six books as well as ebooks on various genealogy topics.

This commonly accepted answer is overly simplistic. America has suffered numerous tragedies and rebounded each time, but the popularity and staying power of the Beat-

les remains unmatched in American history.

The real answer is that Kennedy’s life and death inadvertently primed the nation for the Beatles’ arrival and success. This 60-minute multimedia program explains how and why.

Bureau County Fair set for Aug. 23-27

Thursday Thursday is Concert Day at the fair. The popular entertainment group The Oak Ridge Boys will perform on the grandstand stage. They have had 17 No. 1 hits and have sold more than 41 million records. Opening for them is the Martin Family Circus at 7:30 p.m.

The Martin Family has four kids from 9 to 18 and two parents who play a variety of instruments and sing in harmony on a variety of popular and traditional country music.

Thursday has always been Senior Citizen Day at the fair. Seniors are admitted for $2. A special day of bingo games and refreshments begins at noon in the hospitality building.

Free musical entertainment begins at 3 p.m. and continues through 10 p.m.

During the day you can watch the dairy cattle show or the rabbit show.

The goat show starts at 7 p.m. The rest of the week’s livestock shows are on Saturday and Sunday.

Friday The longest wristband ride special is on Friday night with unlimited rides from 5 to 11 p.m. for $24.

Listen for the roar and watch the smoke billow on the track as the Illini State

Pullers truck and tractor pull begins at 6 p.m. The farm stock tractors pull at 5:30 p.m. but soon the track is taken over by the souped up pick-ups and high-powered tractors.

The beer garden next to the track opens at 5 p.m.

Friday.

As with every day of the fair, there are plenty of free shows scheduled throughout the evening.

Learn about Bengal tigers and African lions, test your farming knowledge or get spooked by a scary clown — all included in your admission price.

Wait until you get to the fairgrounds to eat dinner. There are great food stands all over, including corn dogs, onion rings, tacos, cotton candy, elephant ears and Kramer’s BBQ ribs. You won’t leave hungry.

Saturday If you can only come to the fair one day, Saturday would be a great choice. It is crammed full of entertainment from 9 a.m. to 11 p.m. Take a good long sniff as you walk past the open air barn at the east gate. The BBQ rib cook-off chefs started their roasters bright and early. The winners will be announced around 3 p.m. and you might be lucky enough to snag a sample.

The horse speed show begins at 9 a.m. Watch the riders as they fly around the cloverleaf pattern around the barrels and race their horses to the finish line. Their agility is amazing. Several livestock shows are going on across the fairgrounds too.

Sheep are shown on Saturday and hogs take over the show ring on Sunday. The beef and steer shows are both days.

The day’s free musical entertainment begins with the Bureau County Fair talent show at 1 p.m. in the hospitality building. There are two age divisions — 0-14 and 15-21 years. Talent can be anything from dancing to singing to juggling or doing impressions. The winners from each of the two divisions will repre-

sent Bureau County in the Illinois State Fair talent show in Springfield in January. Registrations are still being accepted. The musical entertainment continues until 10 p.m. in the hospitality building.

There is plenty of seating there. Grab a lemonade shake up and a corn dog and sit and enjoy the free entertainment.

There are two wristband ride specials on Saturday.

The first one is from 1 to 5 p.m. and the second is from 5 to 11 p.m. Wristbands are $24 for each session and provide unlimited rides.

There are several other free shows on the grounds several times daily. Watch the Bear Hollow chain saw carvers make tree trunks turn into cute bears or giant ears of corn. Farmily Feud is a kid’s entertainment show which tests the competitors on their farming knowledge. Close Encounters of the Exotic Kind is an educational show that features Bengal tigers and African lions.

Nightmare on Fairgrounds Road haunted attraction will have a sneak peek into the dark recesses of the haunted barns. Pick up a fair brochure when you get to the grounds to check out the show times.

The slam bang excitement of the demolition derby begins at 5 p.m. Saturday. Be sure to get to the grandstand early to see the kids competing in the power wheels demo derby. Watch those tiny drivers crash their Barbie cars into each other. This year there is a beginner driver class in the demo with drivers from 15 to 21 years old. First place is $1,000. There is also mini van class that’s great fun to watch. Stick around following the demo. The local favorite band, Snap Shot, will be performing near the beer garden from 9 to 11 p.m.

Swing by the hospitality building for a free slice of watermelon all afternoon.

While you are there enjoy the free musical entertainment that continues until 4:30 p.m. Be sure to stop by the McCutchan Arena for the open horse show and the draft horse show.

The six-horse hitch class will be the first class on the schedule following the lunch break at approximately 1 p.m.

The last blast wristband ride special is from 1 to 6 p.m. on Sunday. Ride all you want for $24.

If you have admired the chain saw carvings, your chance to own one will come at 2:30 p.m. when the Bear Hollow wood carvers artwork will be auctioned off as a fundraiser for the fair. Also on the sale block will be some great homemade pies which will be auctioned as a fundraiser for the Bureau County Fair queens trip to Springfield.

If Garth Brooks is one of your favorite musicians, be in the grandstand at 3 p.m. to see the Brian Shartzer Garth Brooks Tribute Show. He will sing all of your Garth favorites.

Admission is only $5 for the concert.

Rep. Jerry Long will host event on Aug. 27 STREATOR — Rep. Jerry Long (R-Streator) will host a family-friendly event — Jerry Long’s BBQ and bags throw-down — on Sunday, Aug. 27, at the Streator City Park.

This will be a fun event with a pulled pork throwdown, a bags tournament, magic by Mark Padgett, facepainting, raffles and music from DJ Zoli.

Four area restaurants are participating in the throwdown — The Bullpen (Streator), Dig Doug’s BBe (Ottawa), Tony’s Butt Shack (Peru) and The Stone Jug (Peru). The attendees will get to pick

IPRB conducts annual oil and gas summer education program for science and math teachers MT. VERNON — Teachers from 29 Illinois counties convened at the Double Tree Hotel at Mt. Vernon for four days of activities to learn about the science, the business and the people of the Illinois oil and natural gas industry.

Day one consisted of hands-on workshops for grades 3-12 to experience classroom-ready curriculum, materials and equipment. Teacher classroom kits valued at hundreds of dollars each, as well as all other cost of the summer program were provided free of charge to each of the 70 attending teachers.

The Illinois Petroleum Resources Board designed the program to introduce teachers to all facets of the industry from geology to leasing, engineering, drilling and production, transportation, and refining oil into thousands of products we all use every day.

In addition to many topics covered by various industry specialists on Tuesday and Thursday, attendees participated in many hands-on activities and learning stations related to geology, geophysics and engineering. “Geologists’ Ideas for the Classroom” focused on the fun of teaching geology to students by employing various aids in the classroom environment.

Wednesday was devoted to touring on-site drilling, production and storage facilities in Southern Illinois. A northern tour bus traveled to the massive Patoka Tank Farm, hosted by Marathon Petroleum and Bi-Petro, Inc. Teachers learned about the importance of this storage and routing facility and the pipeline networks that safely transports oil to loca-

tions all over the U.S. Next host, Deep Rock Energy near Kinmundy, explained about their unique operation near Forbes State Park. Demonstrations of an operating drilling rig, an active seismic wave generation truck, as well as a vehicle for the collection and interpretation of the resulting data, were on display for the group. Teachers enjoyed lunch and conversation with the Webster family and employees. The last stop, Shakespeare Oil, near Salem, provided additional information about reefs and utilizing 3D seismic to find new optimum drilling locations, as well as methods to revitalize old wells that helps keep this historic “Tonti Field” active. Attendees also learned how rock cores help geologist interpret the possibility of an oil location, how oil field equipment is used, as well as planning and preparedness necessary to address any oilfield emergency that might occur.

The eastern tour began with Shakespeare Oil as above. However, this group witnessed a workover rig pulling/reinstalling pipe at an existing well. The tour proceeded to Carmi to visit with host George Mitchell Drilling Co. at their yard and shop. Teachers walked on and toured the multilevel drilling rig and spent some time at the “dog house” learning about the rig’s capabilities and about the hard working people that operate drilling rigs.

Teachers also learned about the huge job of maintaining oilfield equipment and enjoyed lunch in the shop area with the Mitchell family and employees.

Next, the group traveled to Mt. Vernon, Ind., to

explore the CountryMark refinery where much of the Illinois Basin oil is refined.

CountryMark employees explained how oil is transported to the refinery and the various stages of refining oil into other products. Walkthrough Q & A tours of the refinery lab and control room were provided

by CountryMark personnel responsible for quality control and refinery operations. Teachers learned that the Illinois Basin includes parts of Indiana and Kentucky. The primary retail market for CountryMark finished products is within these three states.

IPRB gives special recognition to Illinois State University and the Regional Office of Education 13 for participation and guidance with the program.

Teachers attend the IPRB Summer Education Program, along with other programs to meet their professional development requirements. Options for the IPRB program are two graduate credit hours from ISU or professional development hours from IPRB. Planning is underway for the 2018 program. IVCC receives bequest from estate of Mary Margaret Weeg

OGLESBY — Illinois Valley Community College announced the largest gift in its 93-year history, a bequest of more than $1 million from the estate of Mary Margaret Weeg, PhD, a longtime English instructor and humanities division chair who died April 19, 2015, at age 84.

Weeg’s gift of $1.1 million surpasses the $1 million gift of Miller Group Charitable Trust in November 2011 to name the Community Technology Center for Peter Miller Jr. and his son Peter Miller III. IVCC President Jerry Corcoran made the announcement at the Aug. 17 board meeting.

The board will meet in special session at 3:30 p.m.

Friday, Aug. 25, to officially name the college’s Cultural Centre for Weeg. A ceremony honoring Weeg will follow the meeting at about 3:40 p.m. in the CTC pre-function area.

The bequest will be endowed to support a Dr. Mary Margaret Weeg Arts Scholarship, the Scholarship Campaign fund, the Adult Education department, Student Emergency Fund and IVCC Foundation related needs.

“This monumental and unprecedented gift from a beloved professor and

academic leader will have a profound effect on generations of Illinois Valley Community College students,” said Corcoran.

“Throughout her life, Dr. Weeg generously shared her financial resources, time and counsel with students in need and those seeking a better life through Adult Education,” he said. “As a lifelong champion for classic literature, music and theatre, naming the Cultural Centre for her is a most fitting honor.”

Weeg retired in 1989 — 35 years after beginning her teaching career at LaSalle-Peru High School and part-time teaching at IVCC predecessor LaSalle-Peru-Oglesby Junior College. In 1964 she was appointed chairman of LP’s English department; when the IVCC district was created in 1967, she was named chair of the college’s humanities division. She resigned the chair in 1980 to return to teaching full time.

“My friend and mentor Mary Margaret might be a bit overwhelmed by this recognition of her many contributions to IVCC,” said Dr. Rose Marie Lynch, executor of the Weeg estate. Lynch was hired

by Weeg in 1970 to teach English and journalism.

“This bequest provides a tangible legacy, but her true legacy is in the thousands of students, teachers and friends she inspired with her love of language, literature, music, art and travel,” said Lynch.

In other business, the president reported renovation work in the Cultural Centre financed by the estate of Walter Durley and Hazel Marie Boyle has been completed with potentially more enhancements to come.

Vertical wood grille treatments have been installed on the auditorium’s side walls and projection booth to enhance acoustics and aesthetics and 78 LED lights have been installed to increase energy efficiency and lighting levels.

With remaining Boyle funds, IVCC is reviewing additional Cultural Centre enhancements including new seating.

The Boyles will be honored this fall with the ceremonial unveiling of a plaque placed near the Cultural Centre entrance.

“With the lighting upgrades, paint and wall coverings, the Centre is again a first-class venue for musical and theatrical performances and other special events,” Corcoran said.

The board also approved: • A 2018 budget totaling more than $31 million following a public hearing. Revenue for all funds is $31,208,559, a 5.1 percent decrease from 2017 and expenditures are $31,850,619, a 5.1 percent decrease. Operating revenue is $21,354,944, a 3.1 percent decrease and expenditures are $21,431,944, a 3.8 percent decrease. To balance operating funds, there will be a transfer of $87,000 from auxiliary funds for IT infrastructure.

• Allowed a change in the resignation date of economics instructor Abhijeet Bhattacharya from Dec. 31, 2017, to Aug. 10, 2018. The change, requested by Bhattacharya, will allow him teach the entire year.

• Renewal of insurance coverages, including property, general liability, commercial auto and workers’ compensation, among others, for a total of $263,998.

The renewals were recommended by insurance consultant Bushue HR. Trustees also learned: • Special Saturday Express Registration at Ottawa Center July 22 attracted 24 enrollees and generated 226 credit hours.
