It’s all a matter of balance

Program helps to reduce fear of falling, improve activity levels

BY DAVE COOK news@putnamcountyrecord.com STANDARD — Whether it’s a sudden slip in the winter while walking across ice, missing a step on the stairs or even tripping over a pet, falling is, unfortunately, all too common.

A serious fall-related injury can happen at any age, but the impact of a fall can become increasingly detrimental as people get older.

To help decrease the likelihood of a traumatic fall, the Putnam County Community Center is preparing to offer a new pilot program named “A Matter of Balance.”

“These classes will help participants become more confident about managing falls by believing that they can increase their strength, find ways to reduce falls and protect themselves if they do fall,” PCCC Director Michelle Halm said.

This new, award-winning program is able to be offered at the PCCC through a one-year grant received from the Western Illinois Area Agency on Aging. Halm said the classes are expected to be offered in

the spring and fall.

Class participants will learn to view falls as controllable; set goals for increased physical activity; make changes in their homes to reduce the Michelle chance of a fall; and Halm how to exercise to Director, increase their strength Putnam County and sense of balance.

Community While anyone can Center register, it’s particularly recommended for those 60 and older; those who have previously fallen or are concerned about falling; those who have had to restrict their activities because of concerns about falling; and anyone interested in improving their sense of balance, flexibility and strength.

Eight sessions planned The classes will be held across eight sessions, typically held twice a week for four weeks, or once a week for eight weeks, and with each class lasting two hours. Each session will be led by a trained, volunteer coach.

Halm said she has already confirmed one interested volunteer to coach, and she’s looking for another.

Eight hours of training is required for coaches, and well-developed program materials will be provided.

“Coaches will need to be good communicators and have an enthu-

siasm and willingness to lead a small group through a series of low-to-moderate level exercises.

This is a great opportunity to make a significant impact in the community and to help change people’s lives,” Halm said.

Studies have shown that six months after engaging in the program, 97 percent of participants are more comfortable talking about their fear of falling; 97 percent feel comfortable with their increased activity levels; 99 percent plan to continue exercising; and 98 percent would recommend “A Matter of Balance.”

According to the National Council on Aging, one in four Americans 65 and older will fall this year, and falls are the leading cause of fatal and non-fatal injuries for seniors.

While this program will teach how to prevent falling, make adjustments to the home, and increase physical activity and strength, “A Matter of Balance” will also help promote independence and provide valuable social interaction.

Ongoing opioid issues topic of upcoming community gathering Opioid group seeks public input at Aug. 26 town hall meeting in Hennepin The North Central Illinois Opioid Consortium (NCIOC) invites the public to attend important town hall meetings that will address the ongoing opioid issues in local communities.

To deal with those issues, community members’ input is sought regarding the following questions: • What is currently being done in the community to address opioid issues?

• What still needs to be accomplished?

• What resources are needed to accomplish these goals?

In Putnam County, a town hall meeting will take place at 6 p.m. Monday, Aug. 26, at the Putnam County Emergency Management Building, 1050 N. Hennepin.

Refreshments will be provided.

The Opioid Consortium has other town hall meetings planned as follows: • Henry — 6 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 29, at the Marshall Putnam Farm Bureau, 509 Front St., Suite 1.

The first day to circulate nominating petitions for established political parties is Tuesday, Sept. 3. County offices that are up for nomination at the March primary are circuit court clerk, state’s attorney and two seats on the Putnam County Board.

Nominating petitions for Democratic and Republican precinct committee positions are available and may also be circulated beginning Sept. 3. These party offices are elected in the March primary.

Filing dates for nominating petitions are Nov. 25 through Dec. 2 in the county clerk’s office.

Through this grant, consortium members will help to organize community input in assessing needs; identifying currently available services; and in developing a plan of what might be added in local communities to prevent use, treat and sustain recovery for those suffering from addiction to opioids and other substances.

“It is our hope that the planning grant will help in securing other federal and state grants to then implement and fund needed services,” Miller said.

Cruisin’ with Magnolia Days More than 70 colorful and classic vehicles were entered in the Magnolia Cruise held Friday evening as part of the larger weekend celebration of Magnolia Days. Attendance was so good that the Magnolia Township Preservation Association sold out of all their food. Also on hand were a group of Wild West re-enactors with their stagecoach. Putnam County Elementary School Principal Courtney Balestri waited at the front door of the school as students began arriving, and all were welcomed with a warm and friendly smile. Breakfast was served in the cafeteria before everyone gathered in the gym. Balestri introduced students to their new teachers before leading a recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance. Teachers then guided students to their new classrooms where they got started on another year of learning and growing.

West Nile positive mosquitoes collected in Princeton

Take precautions, health official says PRINCETON — The Bureau, Putnam and Marshall County Health Department confirmed mosquitoes collected in Princeton have tested positive for West Nile virus.

“We are urging the public to use precautions against mosquito bites while attending outdoor events,” Hector Gomez, Bureau, Putnam and Marshall County Health Department administrator, said.

“Common symptoms include fever, nausea, headache and muscle aches.

However, severe illness including meningitis or even death can occur in rare cases,” Gomez said.

People older than 50 or those with compromised immune systems are at higher risk of severe illness from the virus.

Most people (eight out of 10) infected with West Nile virus don’t develop any symptoms.

Febrile illness

for weeks or months, according to the health department.

About one in 150 people infected develop a severe illness affecting the central nervous system such as encephalitis (inflammation of the brain) or meningitis (an inflammation of the membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord).

West Nile virus is transmitted through the bite of the common house mosquito, culex pipiens. Taking simple precautions can help people avoid mosquito bites and help to prevent the spread of the virus.

• Reduce the chance of a bite and the number of places for mosquitoes to breed by eliminating shallow containers of standing water and refreshing bird baths daily. Ensure

doors and windows have tight, properly fitting screens. Take extra care during evening and early morning hours when mosquitoes are active, or if possible, stay inside.

• Repel mosquitoes by wearing long pants, long-sleeved shirts, shoes and socks and by applying insect repellent containing DEET, picaridin, oil of lemon eucalyptus or IR 3535 according to product instructions. Consult a physician before applying insect repellents on children.

•Report areas where stagnant water has been sitting for more than a week, such as ditches or flooded yards.

Traffic crash results in fatality at state park entrance LASALLE — On Aug. 12, Illinois State Police responded to a report of a traffic crash on Route 178 at the entrance to the Matthiessen State Park River Area.

Preliminary investigation revealed a white 2001 International truck-tractor with semi-trailer, operated by Robert Black Jr., 68, of Grand Ridge, was traveling south on Route 178.

As Black approached the entrance to the Matthiessen State Park River Area, a white 2009 Hyundai Sonata, operated by a juvenile male, 16, of Chicago, attempted to turn left onto Route 178 from the Matthiessen State Park River Area.

The truck-tractor struck the left side of the Hyundai passenger vehicle. The Hyundai came to rest in the

The International jackknifed and came to rest across both lanes of Route 178, south of the intersection.

The juvenile male driver succumbed to his injuries. A juvenile male passenger, 16, of Chicago, was transported to an area hospital with serious injuries.

A juvenile female passenger, 16, of Chicago, was transferred to a hospital via helicopter with serious injuries.

This crash remains under investigation by the Illinois State Police and the LaSalle County Coroner’s Office.

No citations have been issued, to date.

An Illinois State Police news release reminds the public that all persons are presumed innocent unless the charges are proved in a court of law.

MARK — Darrell L. Jegglie Jr., 57, of Mark passed away Thursday, Aug. 8, 2019, at his residence.

Darrell was born April 2, 1962, in Spring Valley to Darrell Sr. and Nancy (Slimko) Jegglie.

He graduated from Putnam County High School. Darrell was a machinist and worked at Mennie Machine Company in Mark.

What life was like, not that long ago Museum’s additions, improvements result in a better understanding of history

BY DAVE COOK news@putnamcountyrecord.com HENNEPIN — To begin to understand what past lives were like in Putnam County, there’s no better place to visit than the Putnam County Ag Museum.

Located along Old Highway 26 in Hennepin, the building houses much more than just agri-

cultural equipment. There are displays and artifacts from nearly every facet of rural life during the earlier days of the county.

Many improvements have recently been made to both the building and the collection, resulting in an enhanced experience for visitors.

“It’s absolutely fabulous, all of this brings back so many memories from when I was a child,” first-time visitor Marlene Fidler-

Migliorini, who grew up on a far m near Granville, said during the museum’s recent annual open house.

Two of the many improvements to the museum are the addition of a display from the steel mill and an awning to protect the outdoor display of antique tractors and farm equipment.

‘So much of this is familiar’ “I’ve been gone from Putnam County since 1957, but so much of this is familiar. I’m going to talk my family’s ears off when we come back here. We used to work so hard.

I can’t wait to teach them about how it used to be, because now I can’t even get my grandkids to take out the trash because they complain it’s too much work,” she said.

Hennepin’s 2018 Citizen of the Year, Fred Lippincott, was seen touring the exhibits during the open house and was appreciative of the experience.

“Where else can you go to see so many things from Putnam County’s past?” Lippincott asked.

There is far too much to see in the museum to include everything in

The animal’s hide is preserved in the Putnam County Ag Museum. one story, but items of interest are everywhere. Some small items may not mean much in regard to the overall collection, but are locally connected in such a way that their

charm shouldn’t be underestimated.

For example, there’s a small noodle-making machine resting on a shelf. What gives it that special

touch is a framed newspaper clipping showing two women from Magnolia working the machine during a nearby festival.

Another small exhibit is one with a heartwarming connection to the county’s past, the preserved hide of a handsome little pony named Bobby.

A young girl named Cora Wendt was born in the county in 1904.

An only child, her nearly constant companion was Bobby. Each day, she rode him three miles to school.

During the day, Bobby rested in a shed Cora’s father had built behind the school. Each week, her father replaced the hay and Cora was responsible for ensuring he always had water.

She also rode Bobby to visit family and friends on their farms and also to take her father lunch as he worked in the fields. After Bobby died, his hide was preserved and passed down through Cora’s family before being donated to the museum along with two photos of Cora and Bobby.

The Putnam County Ag Museum is a place every resident should visit. The displays provide a great example of local history, the everyday lives of the past, and how far and how quickly the world has progressed.

“This is our history. This museum is Putnam County,” Putnam County Historical Society member Sue Bruch said.

Among those tractors is the first rubber-tired tractor in the county, which happens to be a barn-built implement. Constructed in Hennepin in 1932 from parts off a Ford Model A, a John Deere tractor and what appears to be a kitchen chair, the tractor is a testament to the practical creativity of Putnam County’s farmers of the past.

Other upgrades are improved lighting, ceiling fans, fresh paint, improved categorization and several additional displays. Visitors can see separate exhibits of items including a woodworking shop, a blacksmith’s tools, a butcher shop, rope-making, a post office, general store, a one-room school, an example of each room in a typical home, Native American artifacts, office equipment, children’s toys, laundry and cleaning equipment, stills, syrup collection, household items, corn, oddities, tools, sewing, wildlife, coal mining, barbed wire and more.

What makes the Putnam County Ag Museum so special is the majority of the displayed items originated from local families.

“I remember shucking oats with my grandpa,” Fidler-Migliorini said.

“We worked all day, but it was fun and it was all we knew. We had field work and also had to take care of our cattle, pigs and chickens every day. We’d all be dirty in school because we all had morning chores, but it didn’t matter because we all had more work to do when we got home,” she said.

Fidler-Migliorini said she misses the sense of companionship she shared with her family back then.

She added she’s planning to bring her younger family members back to the museum to help them understand what life was like when she was a child.

Stonier scholarships awarded to eight recipients for 2019-20 academic year GRANVILLE — The Granville National Bank, trustee for the I.F. Doug Stonier‑Ella Stonier Educa‑ tional Trust, has been notified of the winners for the trust’s 2019-20 scholarship.

Scholarships will be awarded to Mekenzie Ahlstrom, the daughter of Erin Ahlstrom of Granville; Rebecca Arnold, the daughter of Shannon Arnold of Bloomington and Sandra Arnold of Lostant; Kathryn Boux‑ sein, the daughter of Kevin and Kari Moore of Granville; William Faletti, the son of William and Wendy Faletti of Granville; Ryan Friel, the son of Michael and Joanne Friel of Hennepin; Ashlyn Haage, the daugh‑ ter of Bryan and Tracie Haage of Granville; Christian Harris, the son

of Michael and Esmeralda Harris of Hennepin; and Owen Mallery, the son of David and Denise Mallery of Hennepin.

Recipients are chosen on finan‑ cial need and academic ability. They must also be residents of Putnam County and meet other criteria under Mr. Stonier’s will. Each will receive $2,620 for the 2019-20 academ‑ ic year.

This scholarship fund was set up in the will of I.F. Stonier, a Put‑ nam County businessman for many years.

The selection committee consists of the Granville National Bank Trust Officer, one Putnam County School District 535 administrator, and one community member.

Moews scholarship awarded GRANVILLE — The Granville National Bank, which is the trustee for the Erna A. Moews Educational Trust, has been notified of the win‑ ner for the trust’s 2019-20 scholar‑ ship. This year’s scholarship winner is William Faletti, the son of William and Wendy Faletti of Granville.

Faletti will receive $810 for the 2019-20 academic year. He was cho‑ sen by a committee consisting of the school district superintendent and one other school administrator.

The scholarships are awarded to stu‑ dents enrolled in a college of archi‑ tecture, a college of fine arts, or any college in which the applicant will be working toward a degree with a major in any science, mathematics or computer degree.

The recipient must be a resident of Granville, and they are chosen on the consideration of scholarship and community service activities, as well as other criteria established by the Erna Moews will.

Casting call for Stage 212’s ‘The Game’s Afoot’ set for Aug. 23-24 LASALLE — Director Larry Kelsey has announced auditions for the final production of Stage 212’s 2019 season, “The Game’s Afoot,” the ingenious and hilarious mys‑ tery/thriller/farce by Ken Ludwig, will be at 7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 23, and Saturday, Aug. 24, at the theater, 700 First St. in LaSalle.

It is December 1936, and Broad‑ way star William Gillette, admired the world over for his leading role in the play “Sherlock Holmes,” has invited his fellow cast members to his Connecticut castle for a week‑ end of revelry. But when one of the guests is stabbed to death, the festivities in this isolated house of tricks and mirrors quickly turn dangerous.

Kelsey will be casting one man and one woman able to play 25-30, two men and three women able to play 40-50, and one woman able to play 70-75. Those auditioning will be asked to read selected passages from the script.

Perusal scripts are available by visiting the Stage 212 ticket office during regular hours, 4 to 6 p.m.

Monday and 9 a.m. to noon Satur‑ day. Familiarity with the script is not required to audition.

On July 16, the Putnam County Public Library District received the first installment of a $2,000 grant awarded by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), Chicago Section. The funds will be used to provide STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) educational kits for children. They will be allowed to be checked out and will help with the investment in new educational opportunities.

The kits, which will soon be available, are Sphero Sprk+, which will allow children to explore science, math, art, and computer science skills using robotics and basic coding. Another kit will feature Makey Makey’s, an electronic remote control connected to a computer and alligator clips using everyday objects. This kit will also allow children to learn science, music, math, art and computer science skills. Accessories will include laptops, charging hubs, Sphero accessories and books. HENRY — The Marshall-Putnam 4-H Show was recently held at the M-P Fairgrounds in Henry, and youths from all over both counties participated. The show gives them the opportunity to display what they’ve learned over the course of the year.

The show began with the dog show and ended with the evening awards show. The week was full of conference judging for the 4-H’ers, and it wasn’t just livestock. Categories of projects included dog care, mechanical sciences and technology, aerospace, natural resources and environment, home and family, visual arts, horticulture/crops, clothing and textiles, foods, miscellaneous and livestock. Weather and drones were two new additions. As well as blue, red or white ribbons, judges also select trophy winners, state fair winners and state fair alternates.

The American Red Cross held a blood drive during the fair, and many community donors helped with this worthy cause and the collection goal was exceeded.

The sale of champions and the pie/plant auction were both successful. The M-P-Stark Beef Improvement Association sponsored the sale of champions, and it’s a great honor for a 4-H’er to win the right to sell his/her animal at the event.

by Annie’s Little Pots in Princeton, just for the M-P 4-H Show. The M-P 4-H & Extension Foundation made a quilt that was also auctioned. The proceeds went to the Foundation to help support the M-P Extension and 4-H programming.

The show doesn’t go on without the help of

many volunteers who worked many positions such as judges, assistant judges, superintendents, junior superintendents, set-up and take-down crews, cleaning crews, building supervisors, food stand, blood drive helpers and pie makers. It also takes many trophy sponsors to pull off a show like this, and members appreciate their commitment to the M-P 4-H program and local youths.

PRINCETON — Laura Kann will present a program on Italian settlement in the Illinois Valley to the Bureau County Genealogical Society at 7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 22.

Kann’s program is titled “Italian Immigration and Settlement in the Illinois Valley.” She’ll discuss the reasons Italians left their home country, why they settled in the Illinois area, what work they found, and the challenges they faced. ine 2019 Putnam County High School graduates planning to pursue agriculture-related careers were awarded Pletsch Scholarships this year. Recipients who will attend a four-year college received $26,000 each, while those who will attend community college received $5,500. One student was awarded a one-semester community college scholarship. Recipients may reapply for each year of their undergraduate program.

The Pletsch Scholarship is open to all Putnam County High School graduates, current and past, who meet the scholarship requirements. More information on the scholarship and application process may be obtained by contacting Putnam County High School. The Pletsch Scholarship was established in 2011 thanks to the generosity of bachelor brothers Adolph and Elmer Pletsch, who spent their lives farming in rural McNabb. They wished to financially support Putnam County High School graduates as they continued their education and promote interest in farming and related agriculture careers, including agricultural communications, economics, education and engineering; horticulture; agronomy and soils; animal sciences; and various food-related services. Since its inception, the Adolph and Elmer Pletsch Charitable Trust has awarded almost $1 million to Putnam County students. Other Illinois Valley businesses and institutions that benefited from the Pletsch brothers’ generosity include Putnam County churches, St. Margaret’s Hospital, IVAR, Lighted Way and the American Legion.

SPORTS SHORTS Straughn to coach both Putnam County boys and girls golf GRANVILLE — Chelsea Straughn is going to be a busy coach at Putnam County this fall.

In addition to coaching the girls golf team, Straughn will also take over as head coach of the boys team this year with assistance from retired PC coach John Keener.

Both teams have some top talent.

Senior Ali Cuicci returns as the top golfer for the girls from last year’s regional runners-up and sectional qualifier. She warmed up for the fall season by winning the Illinois Valley Junior League title.

The Panthers have one returning state qualifier and one returning sectional qualifier. PC senior Ian Roach went to

state, tying for 10th place last year.

Classmate Ben Cyr was the second individual sectional qualifier out of the Panthers’ own regional.

The season opened for both teams Monday with the Lady Panthers golfing at Wyaton Hills Golf Course in Princeton and the boys golfing at Mendota.

Bill designed to help prevent SIDS signed into law It requires more complete reporting when babies die SPRINGFIELD — Stricter reporting and investigative requirements will now be required by law in situations where an infant has died suddenly and unexpectedly, because of legislation sponsored by state Sen. Sue Rezin, R-Morris, and state Rep. Thomas Bennett, R-Pontiac.

According to new law’s sponsors, sudden and unexpected infant deaths

are often listed as simply sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS), when other contributing factors, such as unsafe sleeping environments, might have been a contributing factor.

Senate Bill 1568 requires coroners to conduct an autopsy following the investigation as well as list any environmental factors that might have contributed to the child’s death on their report. The new law would also require the Department of Public Health to publish current data that it receives from coroner reports so

that the public has access to reporting concerning SIDS. “Too often, infant deaths are being ruled as SIDS even when there are unsafe factors present at the scene where the infant passed,” Rezin said. “By just putting SIDS on the death certificate, potentially valuable information is being left out that could help prevent infant deaths in the future.”

The legislation was brought forward by Ashley Lamps, a constituent of Sen. Rezin and state Rep.

Lance Yednock, D-Ottawa, who lost her son in 2013 to SIDS. Lamps now runs a foundation that advocates for SIDS awareness and the use of safe sleep practices.

“Illinois needs to have as much information as possible at hand to help prevent these instances from happening,” Yednock said. “Families across the Illinois Valley, and throughout the entire state, will have better information going forward to take extra care for their newborns.”
