BRIEFS IVCC offering Virtual Express Registration
Virtual Express Registration event will be 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 11, at Illinois Valley Community College. Students can apply, register, see a counselor and, if necessary, meet with a financial aid representative, said IVCC Director of Admissions and Transfer Services Quintin Overocker. “It will be a virtual one-stop shop,” said Overocker. “All students need do is call 815-224-0324. We will direct them to everything they need.” Overocker said up to four counselors are expected to cover each session. Students can also visit campus in-person during the events and whenever the college is open. Extension’s final summer gardening program set Aug. 11
The summer series of the University of Illinois Extension’s Four Seasons Gardening Program, which focuses on environmental stewardship, home gardening and backyard food production,
got underway during the month of June. The final session of the summer series, set for Tuesday, Aug. 11, at 1:30 p.m., is titled Adventures in Edible Landscaping. This webinar will explore the use of plants that are not only visually attractive, but also edible. Join horticulture educator Austin Little to look at the benefits of introducing edible plants into the landscape, as well as the unique challenges of edible plants. In addition, the webinar will discuss great options of edible plants to use, as well as some design basics when adding them to your landscape. grapp@shawmedia.com While the COVID pandemic has changed a lot of what this school year is going to look like, one thing it hasn’t changed is the ability for exchange students to study in America. Right now, because of the misconception that cultural exchange probably won’t happen this year, there is a great need for host families. Andrea Crew, Illinois Field Manager for International Cultural Exchange Services who is based in Put-
nam County, said her agency does have a decreased amount of students coming to the U.S. this year, but the program is still going forward. “Cultural exchange bridges the divide. If you turn on any news station at all, anyone can easily see that our world needs a global impact and foreign exchange students and their experiences help foreign relations now and in the future.” Crew is currently seeking host families in Putnam County. There are also openings in Streator, Earlville, Leland, LaMoille, Serena and Spring Valley.
Crew said while it’s hard to put on a number on just how many families are needed this fall through ICES, she said it’s rare that a family would not have a student if they applied to host a student. “New students submit applications daily, and students are matched to their new American families daily, as well,” she said. Some may question what will happen to these students if schools revert back to remote learning full time due to an outbreak of COVID. But even if schools revert back to remote learning, Crew said ICES will allow ex-
change students to stay and continue learning remotely. “We are committed to allowing the students their best experience regardless of the situation,” she said. “The Federal Department of State has made it very clear that they are not suspending the J-1 high school student visa program this year. They have been very flexible during the pandemic and continue to do so.” Crew said there’s still a strong interest from students to spend a year in the U.S.

Student exchange is still happening this school year
Lostant mom saves prom By KIM SHUTE
kshute@shawmedia.com LOSTANT – A Lostant family threw a highly personalized prom after Putnam County High School canceled theirs due to COVID-19. Like most local schools, Putnam County canceled this year’s prom due to coronavirus, but one Lostant woman, Jenifer Shaver, didn’t want to see her son and his girlfriend go without, so she threw them their own prom. Shaver, a nurse who’s worked through the pandemic, and her husband Brian, LaSalle-Peru High School’s dean of students, have experience homeschooling their kids so creativity has always been a strong point for them. She’s also no stranger to throwing a good family party – the mom of five has family fun nights that are second to none. Thanks to her creativity, her family has had a virtual Hawaiian vacation, “camped in the mountains,” gone to outer space and visited princess fairy unicorn land right from home. When it came to prom, she says throwing her own was a no-brainer. “When our vacation got canceled, I decided we’d do a staycation, but not an ordinary one,” she said. “We went all out with a Hawaiian theme, with decorations, traditional foods, clothes, an ocean waves sound machine and music. Just because we had to stay home doesn’t mean we can’t leave in our minds.” “I think it’s important to just be present in the moment, but turn
those moments into memories,” Shaver added.” I don’t want the kids’ memories to be that they didn’t get to play sports, or didn’t get to go to their prom.” Shaver said she understands why prom was canceled and supports the administration 100% so she decided she didn’t want to try to throw a competing event, or one that could exclude anyone, so she decided to honor her son and his girlfriend with their own dance, but also included her two younger children and their Argentinian au pair Aldi who helped plan the event. After deciding on a masquerade ball theme, Shaver got to work searching for formal wear, renting a dance floor – a well-kept secret that she says paid off when her son’s girlfriend Kendra laid eyes on it, making bouquets for the girls, getting lights, a sound system, chocolate fountain, backdrops and photographer lined up. “I had a lot of amazing businesses help me out with deals on the dance floor, sound system, pie pops and more, because they were enthusiastic about the idea,” she said. As for the results? She says the only people who knew about the dance floor were Aldi (the au pair) and I. “Corbin was super surprised and Kendra almost cried. I told her that she had to wait until after pictures,” Shaver said. “Her parents came just for the pictures and they were both pretty teary-eyed. It was absolutely wonderful. They had the night of their lives.”

The Arukah Institute of Healing will host a drive-in program and movie, featuring the 1989 Hollywood hit, “The Field of Dreams” on a big-screen. The event will be open to cars at 7:30 p.m. with the program to start at 8 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 8, at Alter Acres, 1134 Prairie Lane S., Princeton. A brief program with former Major League Baseball player Les Norman, who played for the Kansas City Royals in 1995-96, will proceed the movie. Norman, who grew up with an alcoholic, abusive father, is a syndicated sports radio host, “Breakin’ the Norm,” TV analyst, author and motivational speaker. He is a graduate of Braidwood Reed-
Custer High School. Attendees may sit in their car in a safe, socially-distanced environment and tune in to FM for the program and movie. They are also welcome to sit outside their cars in chairs or on blankets. Cost for the event is $100 per car. All proceeds will benefit the The Arukah Institute. Snacks and Arukah Institute “swag” will be available. Tickets may be bought online at arukahinstitute. org. Arukah Institute of Healing, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that operates in part on the generous support of community members. COVID-19 has had a significant impact on the already rising mental health needs in the community. Arukah does what it can to keep services affordable, as a large portion of residents cannot afford mental healthcare. All donations are tax-deductible.

SOB arrives in Peru to create unique, tasty food When SOB – which stands for Sushi or Burger – was preparing to open, I was excited to have another place in the area that offered sushi because it’s not something you can get many places locally. The new restaurant at 612 Fourth St. in Peru didn’t open until February and, unfortunately, I didn’t have a chance to go before restaurants were shut down because of COVID-19 precautions. I finally got my opportunity and it didn’t disappoint. The main draw for me is the sushi, and one neat feature of SOB is you can see the chefs preparing the rolls. The restaurant offers classic rolls, house rolls and “weird” rolls, and we sampled from each category. One member of our group had the classic California ($6) and Philly lox ($7), which featured smoked salmon, cream cheese, cucumber, avocado and bagel seasoning. Another had the Shrimp Kicker ($8), prepared with tempura shrimp, avocado, cucumber, jalapeño, cream cheese and SOB sauce, and another ordered The I&M ($15), which contained tempura shrimp, cream cheese, avocado, SOB sauce, unagi and sweet Thai chili sauce. All the flavors in each roll came together nicely, and the sauces, especially the sweet Thai chili, really kicked them up a notch. We also ordered the BBQishi ($9) for an appetizer from the “weird” rolls, which were sushi rolls without seafood. This one had pulled pork, tempura onions, Korean barbecue and French fries, all deep-fried and topped with creamy slaw. It was unique, tasty and great for non-seafood eaters who want the sushi experience. Other non-seafood rolls are tempura portabella, tempura chicken, beef and vegetables. Our non-sushi eater had plenty of options. He had a build-your-own burger ($7) and truffle fries ($6). The array

SOB also serves mac and cheese, non-burger sandwiches, ramen, salads and a variety of appetizers from goat cheese balls to crispy pork belly to miso soup. Of course, you can’t have
a dinner without drinks. SOB has a nice selection of beers and wines, but also provides a specialty drink menu, including Girlie Drink ($9), a cocktail with vodka, strawberry puree, fresh lime, rock candy syrup and club soda, which was a hit among our group. To top things off, we ordered two delectable desserts:
the apple pie egg rolls served with vanilla ice cream, and the dessert of the week, which was a tempura brownie with vanilla ice cream. The atmosphere was relaxed and enjoyable, our server, Kat, was friendly and attentive and offered excellent recommendations, and, most importantly, the food
and drinks were delicious.

cellerbrock@shawmedia.com Toughness wasn’t just something that Steve Self tried to instill in the basketball players he coached. He lived it, too. Self, who served two stints as the boys basketball head coach at Henry-Senachwine High School, died on Monday, July 27, at the age of 49, after a six-year battle with cancer. “The Henry-Senachwine family is saddened by the loss of Steve Self,” read a release from HSHS superintendent Dr. Michael Miller. “As a teacher and coach, Steve was so dedicated and invested in our students, families, and schools. Working with Steve for 17 years, I know the positive impact he had and know how much he cared about our schools and our community. We will miss and always remember Coach Self.” Former Henry athletic director John Erwin, who retired after the last school year, spent 20 years working with Self, many of them sharing the same office. He remembers Self as an ambitious, hard-working man who was a successful coach, a strict but fair mentor to his players and students, but always with a witty sense of humor. “Steve was a funny guy, a lot of fun to be around. I have a lot of fond memories of my years working with him,” said Erwin. “He was a very caring person. He cared about the kids, he cared about Henry-Senachwine High School and he cared about the community. “He put up a good fight … He will be very much missed.” St. Bede volleyball coach Karrie Damerell got to know Steve’s wife, Rita Self, through coaching against her Henry teams in the Tri-County Conference for many years. Ultimately, they became friends and got to know each others families better when their sons, Griffin Self and Braden Damerell, played junior football against each other. “Steve was an avid sportsman, whether it was coaching his team, supporting Rita’s volleyball teams or sitting in the stands supporting our children’s teams,” she said. “He will be missed …

Our thoughts and prayers go out to Rita and the Self family.” Self, like his wife a native of Williamsfield, took over the Mallards hoops program in 2001-02 and over the next eight seasons, led them to a 92-124 record. Joe Mintus, now the assistant principal at Mossville Elementary School, admitted he and Self were bitter rivals when the former first started coaching boys basketball at T-C rival Midland. However, when Mintus’ assistant, Brian Yoder, left to coach at Flanagan-Cornell, he offered Self the spot and it paid off big. In 2009-10, the first of his two seasons there working as an unpaid assistant, he helped Midland set a school record for wins, win both the Tri-County regular
season and conference tournament and a regional. Later, Mintus returned the favor and joined Self at Henry. “I always respected Steve’s teams and how hard they played,” Mintus said. “His attention to detail made me a better coach. He taught me so much. Steve was such a great guy. This is a sad day, for sure … He made Henry a better place.” In his second term at HSHS, from 201112 through 2016-17, his clubs posted a 10069 mark over six seasons, but it was during this second tour at Henry that he fell ill. After suffering from severe headaches, he had it checked out and was diagnosed with a brain tumor in July of 2014. During the subsequent surgery, he
underwent radiation and chemotherapy treatments that caused him weight loss, nausea, fatigue and the loss of his hair. Through it all, with the help of his wife, his children 18-year-old Griffin and 16-year-old Hope and his many friends and colleagues, Self remained dedicated professionally and upbeat personally. “Steve was a class act,” said Marquette coach Todd Hopkins, who like Self is a devoted St. Louis Cardinals fan. “He was a good guy to talk to, great guy, great family guy, a real basketball guy, too. He got everything out of those Henry kids that he possibly could and then some. He did a fantastic job … This is a tough deal for his family. You have to feel for them and the entire Henry community. It’s a big loss.”

Prophet Hills is hosting the Invitational for the first time since joining the field in 2016. The standing rules require that clubs that are within a 60-mile radius of South Bluff in Peru, the original IVWGI host course, are invited to participate. The Prophetstown club meets this requirement on the northwest border.
Prophet Hills took home team titles in its first two years (2016, 2017) in the tournament. Other active participating clubs are Seneca’s Deer Park (Oglesby), Edgewood Park (McNabb), Hidden Lake (Sheffield), Mendota Golf Club, Morris Country Club, Senica’s Oak Ridge (LaSalle), Spring Creek (Spring Valley)

The Contact Tracer Supervisor will supervise a team of six to nine Contact Tracers who are working with COVID-19 patients to help them recall everyone with whom they have had close contact during the time-frame while they may have been infectious, then contact the individuals to let them know of their potential exposure, and connecting contacts with various services (including social support structures, testing, clinical care, etc.). The Contact Tracer Supervisor will track progress against target goals and provide supervision and mentorship to staff.
The Contact Tracer will work with patients to help them recall everyone with whom they have had close contact during the time-frame while they may have been infectious, then contact the individuals to let them know of their potential exposure. Contact Tracers will be provided scripts to follow, and must comply with policies and procedures provided by IDPH, and comply with Human Subjects training regarding confidential information related to personal information.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities Supervise a team of between seven to ten people that collectively performs all functions of the COVID-19 Community Team response. Coordinate the team's schedules and provide supervision and troubleshooting. Resolve issues and brainstorm and implement solutions. Call patients who have been newly diagnosed with COVID-19 to provide support and gather information. Help patients recall everyone with whom they have had close contact during the timeframe while they may have been infectious. Call the contacts to discuss their potential exposure. Communicate with contacts in a professional and empathetic manner. Collect and record information on symptoms into a Client Resource Management platform CRM. Provide contacts with information about how to separate themselves from others who are not exposed, how to monitor themselves for illness, and if appropriate, refer them to testing according to procedures or to a Resource Coordinator for additional resources. Track daily and weekly progress for the team against target goals including cases contacted successfully, contacts tracked and referred, and patients and contacts referred to social support systems. Perform quality assurance through listening in on calls or to recordings of calls and providing feedback to team. Liaise with partners and stakeholders at the Bureau, Marshall, Putnam County Health Departments and IDPH. Call each person under active monitoring daily for 14 days to check that there is no onset of symptoms. Maintain contact with supervisor. Conduct other related duties as assigned. Minimum Qualifications Bachelor's degree or 4 years of related professional experience. 3 years of related professional experience (in addition to the educational requirements). Experience supervising staff. Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to interact professionally with culturally diverse individuals during a time of crisis and distress. Ability to communicate verbally in a professional and empathetic manner. Good project management skills and ability to track progress of a team. Excellent organizational skills. Good critical thinking skills. Ability to handle confidential information with discretion and professionalism. Proficiency with computer software and ability to learn how to use CRM platform. PUBLIC HEARING NOTICE The Village of Granville will hold a public hearing on Tuesday, August 18, 2020, at 6:00, in Granville Village Hall at 316 S. McCoy Street, Granville, IL to provide interested parties an opportunity to express their views on the proposed federal funded Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) project. Persons with disabilities or non-English speaking persons who wish to attend the public hearing and need assistance should contact North Central Illinois Council of Governments, 613 W. Marquette Street, Ottawa, IL, 815-433-5830 no later than August 12, 2020. Every effort will be made to make reasonable accommodations for these persons. On or about September 30, 2020, the Village of Granville intends to apply to the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity for a grant from the State CDBG program. This program is funded by Title 1 of the federal Housing and Community Development Act of 1974, as amended. These funds are to be used for a community development project that will include the following activities: replacement of water mains, hydrants and grant administration. The total amount of CDBG funds to be requested is $550,000. The amount of CDBG funds proposed to be used for activities that will benefit low-to-moderate income persons is $296,340. The Village of Granville also proposes to expend $99,900 in non-CDBG funds on the project. These non-CDBG funds will be derived from the following sources: Village of Granville's Water Fund. Information related to this project will be available for review prior to the public hearing as of August 5, 2020 at the Post Office at 107 S McCoy Street, Granville, IL. The lobby is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Interested citizens are invited to provide comments regarding these issues either at the public hearing or by prior written statement. Written comments should be submitted to North Central Council of Governments, 613 W. Marquette Street, Ottawa, IL, 61350 no later than August 18, 2020 in order to ensure placement of such comments in the official record of the public hearing proceedings. A plan to minimize displacement and provide assistance to those displaced has been prepared by the Village of Granville and is also available to the public. This project will result in no displacement of any persons or businesses.
