Six new ways to stop in Hennepin Village approves new traffic controls, fencing ordinance and street work

BY DAVE COOK news@putnamcountyrecord.com HENNEPIN — The Hennepin Village Board recently approved the installation of six new stop signs which will be erected throughout the village of Hennepin.

During the July 26 board meeting, an ordinance was passed to erect the new signs at the following intersections: • A two-way stop at the intersection of Hazel Marie Boyle Drive and 10th Street which will stop traffic on Hazel Marie Boyle Drive • A one-way stop at the intersection of Morine Drive and 10th Street stopping traffic on Morine Drive • A two-way stop at the intersection of Locust Street and Fifth Street stopping traffic on Locust Street • A one-way stop at the intersection of Fifth Street and Vine Street which will stop traffic on Fifth Street • A one-way stop at the intersec-

One of the issues is no motor fuel tax (MFT) funds will be available to help with maintenance costs until the road meets state standards.

The subdivision’s developers, now deceased, failed to originally construct Timberline Drive to these specifications, and the cost of altering the road now is prohibitive.

Putnam County highway engineer Pat Sloan has said it would cost an estimated $10,000 to fill the potholes and seal-coat the current road. Granville Township has recently filled the potholes, with officials saying they were willing to do that out of a sense of being good neighbors, but added they were unable to accept the greater costs of reconstructing the road.

Moriarty said residents were told years ago the township won’t accept the road until it meets proper specifications. He said if the township is approached again years from now, the answer will remain the same.

Moriarty proposed if Timberline Drive residents were able to get the village of Mark to agree to connect the subdivision to its water supply, as other outside areas have done, the subdivision and the road would then become part of the village. He added,

Fences will also need to be placed at least 12 inches inside the lot line, and none will be allowed to be constructed on public property or in the right-of-way.

It will also be the property owner’s responsibility to determine all property lines. Property owners will be responsible for keeping their fencing in good repair and any missing or damaged portions will need to be repaired or replaced with the same type and quality of material within 30 days.

Residents erecting any non-agricultural fencing will need to obtain a permit from the zoning officer. Any violations of this ordinance will result in a fine of not less than $100 and not more than $200 for each offense. The new ordinance also reads a separate offense will be deemed committed on each day during or on which a violation occurs or continues.

“The problem is a person buys a house, moves in and doesn’t check rules, regulations, who owns the road or what’s going on; they just assume somebody’s supposed to take care of it,” township trustee Frank Vulcani said.

Vulcani added for the township to accept a $30,000 to $50,000 road project in exchange for MFT funds, which he estimated would only amount to a few hundred dollars, didn’t make good financial sense.

“There’s no way we can justify going out there and putting that kind of money into that road when we’ve got the gravel roads we’ve got to fix,” Moriarty said.

“When the board didn’t accept it back then, when it was first done, you know something had to be wrong,” Vulcani said.

With no government entity willing to shoulder the costs of properly re-constructing Timberline Drive, it appears as though the residents themselves may be responsible for the associated costs.

High Street project The board took advantage of the current low asphalt prices to approve the widening of High Street from Route 26 to Front Street. The $774,587.30 project will include the installation of a bike path and will also improve a two block area of Front Street.

Trees The board tabled a decision concerning the removal of trees on village property, but agreed to create guidelines for such occurrences in the future. As far as a request from a resident concerning the removal of a tree on private property, the board seemed to feel if the request was being made for aesthetic reasons, it should be done at the homeowner’s cost.

“We’ve also lost a lot of trees, we can’t just be cutting them down if there’s nothing wrong with them,” trustee Quentin Buffington said.

K-9 locates nine pounds of meth Four arrested after I-80 traffic stop

BY DAVE COOK dcook@bcrnews.com PRINCETON — Following a traffic stop on Interstate 80, three California residents and one Ohio resident are facing charges of unlawful possession of methamphetamine.

At 9 a.m. on July 28, Illinois State Police stopped a vehicle on eastbound I-80 at Mile Marker 48 for a traffic violation. During a vehicle walk-around, a K-9 officer from the Tri-County Drug Enforcement Narcotics Team (Tri-DENT) detected the presence of illegal drugs.

While searching the vehicle, officers found three pounds of methamphetamine in a duffel bag.

Driver Robert Dyas, 36, of Long Beach, Calif., admitted possession of the bag and was taken into custody.

Three passengers, Mary Brown, 36, of Long Beach, Calif.; Elizabeth Jones, 25, of Cleveland, Ohio; and Sherwood Lyles, 52, of Burbank, Calif.; were also taken into custody, and all four defendants were taken to

the Illinois State Police District 17 Headquarters in LaSalle.

According to Bureau County State’s Attorney Geno Caffarini, while being searched during processing, one of the women was found to be hiding three additional pounds of methamphetamine in her girdle. Officers later found three more pounds of methamphetamine in the squad car that one of the defendants then admitted to concealing during transport. This raised the total amount being smuggled to Ohio to nine pounds.

Dyas faces charges of unlawful possession of methamphetamine with intent to deliver and more than 900 grams. Penalties for the Class X felony include a sentence of not less than 15 years and not more than 60. Fines are not to exceed $400,000 or the street value of the drug.

The other three defendants face charges of unlawful possession of methamphetamine of more than 900 grams. Caffarini also said Lyles has a prior federal conviction for distribution of cocaine.

OGLESBY —The Illinois Valley Community College (IVCC) Foundation, an independent, non-profit created to improve the college’s ability to provide local educational opportunities and public service, has recently elected a new president.

According to a press release, Dr. Susan Schmitt of Streator was elected president of the IVCC Foundation, succeeding O.J. Stoutner, president since 2004. Stoutner, a member since 1999, will remain on the board.

Schmitt, a Streator veterinarian and IVCC alumnus was elected vice president in 2016 and has been a member of the foundation since 2006. Dr. Kim Novak, also a veterinarian in Streator and Ottawa, as well as an alumnus, was elected vice president. She’s been a member of the foundation since 2014.

Schmitt thanked Stoutner for his 13 years of leadership and also for his service to the foundation for more than 18 years.

IVCC, Extension partner on ag research plot OGLESBY — The University of Illinois Extension and Illinois Valley Community College announced the opening of a new chapter in its expanding soil and crop research partnership with the development of a stand-alone research plot at IVCC, just south of campus.

The eight-acre plot has been planted with soybeans and is being used to conduct a replicated soybean population study.

The study has three planting populations: 100,000, 140,000 and 180,000 plants per acre.

The populations will be recorded by Extension staff Russ Higgins and Daryle Wragge. Higgins is an Extension educator with a commercial agriculture emphasis, while Wragge is a coordinator of ag and natural resources programs.

Test plot data will be obtained from the yield monitor on the combine during harvesting this fall. Research is being conducted in close cooperation with Chris Kolodziej, who has contracted with IVCC to farm its land. The Extension will offer a late season scouting workshop at the site Aug. 15.

IVCC President Jerry Corcoran said, “This is an exciting step in the quickly developing partnership between IVCC and the University of Illinois Extension/College of ACES. We are pleased to be working with one of the world’s premier colleges of agriculture.

“I also want to express our appreciation for the essential cooperation of Chris Kolodziej.

Having Chris handle the IVCC farming operation is a major plus for the college,” Corcoran added.

The enhanced research program is the latest chapter in the IVCC-Extension partnership.

IVCC’s effort to build a new agriculture program was aided greatly by the partnership.

The relationship began three years ago with the Extension moving its four-county main office to IVCC. The counties are Bureau, LaSalle, Marshall and Putnam.

“The Extension’s significant resources and vast network of clients played a major role in helping us plan and carry out the successful ag program launch,” Corcoran said.

Extension County Director Jill Guynn said, “The Extension provides both direct, researchbased educational programming and also works in cooperation with local partners to address needs that improve the quality of life for area residents.

“It has been a pleasure to work with IVCC to develop the new agriculture program and to enhance local resources and services for residents and the ag industry. Through this partnership, we will bring more programs from the College of ACES and create opportunities for more youth and adults.”

The foundation helps local communities by providing scholarships to area students who’ve demonstrated they are deserving and well-qualified, as well as giving financial support to educational programs and services.

In 1974, Helen Taylor, a retired teacher from Peru, bequeathed IVCC a gift of more than $100,000 after she died.

This generous gift provided the seed money to create the IVCC Foundation in 1976.

Taylor’s bequest allowed the opportunity for other area philanthropists to make substantial gifts dedicated to helping local students continue their education. J. Murray and Rhea Mae Crowder, of Spring Valley; Watson Bartlett, of Mendota; and Nora and Mennow P. Smith of Lostant have all made bequests of more than $100,000 and helped increase the foundation’s assets to nearly $2.7 million by 2010.

More importantly, their generosity continues to help a multitude of students enjoy brighter futures. There are currently more than 120 foundation scholarships and up to 200 students annually receive awards.

Re-elected to foundation positions are David Conterio, as treasurer and Donna Swiskoski as secretary.

Re-elected to three-year terms were Novak, Stoutner, Jack Cantlin and Dan Janka.

New Director Kim Zavada was elected to a three-year term. A 1989 graduate of IVCC, she works at Streator High School.

At the close of this fiscal year, the foundation had $3.28 million in its investment portfolio and more than $477,000 in its endowment campaign for increasing the number of scholarships.

IVCC President Jerry Corcoran has said the work to replace lighting fixtures and add wall coverings in the Cultural Centre auditorium continues. The project is expected to be finished before classes begin on Aug. 16 and is being funded by a bequest from the estate of Walter Durley Boyle of Hennepin, a former long-time foundation director and trustee.

GRANVILLE — Harold Gene “Corky” Mabis, 86, of rural Granville died Sunday, July 30, 2017, at St. Margaret’s Hospital in Spring Valley.

Corky was born Dec. 30, 1930, in Mansfield to George and Luera (Schmall) Mabis.

He married Beth Carr on April 8, 1956.

He attended Mansfield School System and served in the U.S. Army in the Medical Core from 1948 to 1952 and was stationed in Germany for 39 months.

Corky was a self-employed contractor. He also ran McNabb Lumber for many years.

He was a member of Granville American Legion Post 180 and a past member of the McNabb American Legion. Corky was on the McNabb Fire Department for many years, he was also a member of Fish–N–Fun for many years. He helped develop the site for the Edgewood Golf Course and planted many of the trees on the golf course and served on the board of directors.

He had a passion for playing golf and fishing.

Survivors include his wife, Beth Mabis of Granville; one son, Kent Mabis of Granville; six grandchildren, Paige, whom they helped raise, Paul, Colin, Kemberli, Colton and Michael; seven great-grandchildren, Jordan, Josilynn, Dakota, Oliver, Elijah, Breyson and Parker; one sister, Gladys Scott of Leroy; and one sister–in–law, Arlene Mabis of Pontiac.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Kelly Mabis; six brothers; two sisters; and one grandson, Cameron.

Services will be at 7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 3, at the Dysart-Cofoid Funeral Chapel in Granville. Cremation rites will be accorded following the service.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

HENNEPIN — John Richard O’Neill, 64, of Hennepin died Sunday, July 30, 2017, at his home with his loving family by his side.

John was born April 1, 1953, in Peoria to Leo and Loretta (Johnston) O’Neill. He married Nita Braun on Sept. 18, 2004.

He graduated from Tiskilwa High School and attended Illinois State University. He was the manager for the Department of Motor Vehicle Secretary of State. John was also in the U.S. National Guard.

He was a member of Hartman Gun Club and the Knights of Columbus.

He is survived by his wife, Nita of Hennepin; two daughters, Rachel Parsons of Granville and Tara (Adam) Perry of Tiskilwa; two brothers, Edward (Jan) O’Neill of Dunlap and Patrick O’Neill of DeKalb; two sisters, Anne (Daniel) Casing of Shorewood and Jane (the late John) Piccatto of Spring Valley; three grandchildren, Alexander, Bentley and Charles; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one nephew, Brian.

Accident

At 4:28 p.m. on July 24, deputies investigated a two-vehicle accident at the intersection of East First Road and North 43rd Road, in Mendota Township.

A vehicle driven by a 16-year-old female from Mendota was westbound on North 43rd Road, approaching East First Road. A vehicle driven by Gerald Wenzel, 64, of Granville, was northbound on East First Road, approaching North 43rd Road.

Wenzel proceeded into the intersection and struck the westbound vehicle.

The 16 year old, Wenzel and Wenzel’s passenger, Julie Fultz, 25, of Granville were all transported

by Mendota EMS to OSF St. Paul’s Hospital in Mendota. Wenzel was cited for failure to yield at a stop intersection and for failure to wear a seat belt.

Fultz was also cited for failure to wear a seat belt.

Summer vacation: ‘Those were the days’ W

e have survived the summer youth baseball season, and now our thoughts are turning to vacation. There is a very small window of time to enjoy a family vacation — new activities and school will begin again in just a couple of weeks.

Summer vacation time always reminds me of that same thing when I was growing up.

It seems now there isn’t much time for a family to go on vacation, but I remember when I was young, we had to plan our family time around getting my projects done and participating in the 4-H Fair and the Bureau County Fair. The activities are different for my grandsons, but plans still revolved around my activities.

The first family vacations I remember were centered around going to Nebraska to visit my grandfather and aunts, uncles and cousins. My parents moved to Illinois from Nebraska, and many of our rel-

atives were still there. I have to say I wasn’t always wildly excited about those visits. My grandpa was great, but I didn’t know the rest of the family very well.

The cousins didn’t know me, and I didn’t know them. We only saw them once a year. We did always make sure to spend the night with my favorite aunt and uncle in Lincoln, Neb. In my young mind, they were so special. My uncle was an optometrist, and my aunt worked in a department store. I thought it was so cool that she worked away from home — I don’t know why — she just seemed so different from my mom, and in my young mind she was just the best person I knew.

After my grandfather passed away, we didn’t go to visit the family as much. My parents decided we should go on some vacation to see things. The first vacation included my sister and I sleeping in a tent, and my parents slept in the car.

COMMENTARY Nita Wyatt At that time we owned a Rambler (OK I just dated myself) car with seats that would fold down flat and my parents slept in there. Our camp was quite a sight, but when I think back we weren’t that much different than other people we met on our travels.

We took a trip to Colorado and went to Estes Park and to the top of Pikes Peak; we visited the Blue Ridge Mountains in Tennessee and got lost on a curvy road in those hills; we camped in Minnesota and survived the biggest mosquitoes I had ever seen; we saw Old Faithful and all the rest of the wonders of Yosemite.

We saw them all. We drove the two-lane roads to the west and south, north and east. We

took a trip to Washington, D.C., where my dad discovered the only way to see the sights was to take a tour. My dad, the country guy, thought the traffic of the capital city was too much for him. We found a guide and his car to take us to all the monuments. My dad was almost as scared having someone else drive as he had been to drive himself. He gripped the door and his seat the entire time. Our driver zipped around in that traffic like it was nothing. I had never seen my dad scared of anything before that day.

Those were the days, my friend, those were the days.

We sang our way down the road watching the scenery and the big trucks pass us by.

No radio, no air conditioning, no big hotels, it was a special time.

Very soon, my immediate family, the six of us, will take off on a vacation of our own.

We have vacationed together

before. We have gone to a lake or two for a week, and we have gone to a water park for a few days. This time we are going, as my oldest grandson says, “to see something,” kind of like those vacations I remember as a child.

Our trip will be slightly different, there will be the interstate; there will be air conditioning; there will be radio and other entertainment electronics. We will be staying in a cabin, not in a tent (thankfully), but some of it will be the same.

We will be together, and we will be making memories with our grandchildren as my parents did with me.

Hoping that you made some memories this summer, whether in your own backyard or on the road.

Enjoy the summer! I know we have and will.

Jacinta and Francisco soon. (and within two years they are in heaven), but you are to stay here a longer time. The Lord wants to use you to make me known and loved. Given Monday’s “disclosures,” what can we expect from NAFTA 2.0?

For Trump the environment is a non-issue -- expect no environmental protections.

Expect nothing for workers.

If Trump had plans to benefit workers he would’ve disclosed them Monday, July 16.

Bottom line ...

There will be some trade imbalance restrictions: Window dressing with no real enforcement teeth to it. To that facade add from the TPP what is missing in NAFTA, and you get NAFTA 2.0 — corporate welfare on steroids.

Will our Congressman Adam Kinzinger stand up to Trump?

Will Kinzinger protect our jobs and health here in Illinois, or will he tow the corporate line?

If you want to know, follow the money.

The money trail — a long line of parties elbowing their way to the front to stake a claim. Upfront, you will find the corporations — ag, pharma, the Koch Brothers, the usual suspects. This core constituency will get their prized corporate protectionism, a license to kill. Then, the politicians, Ryan and McConnell at the lead, with Adam Kinzinger close behind.

Dead last — but extremely well publicized for “how well they came out in the deal,” a token of some sort, for the American worker. Nothing will be left by then for the environment.

Your health and your prosperity will suffer because our representative in Washington did nothing.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Don’t support ACA repeal To the Editor, Repealing the ACA will have wide-ranging effects, not many of them good. For starters it will eliminate the Medicaid expansion which provides health care to those who are not able to afford health care insurance. Eliminating this expansion will immediately cut off access to affordable health care for millions. This will have negative effects on the disabled, less fortunate and the most vulnerable in our society.

Another effect of repealing the ACA will be to eliminate the subsidies on the ACA exchanges. These subsidies, available to those earning less than 400 percent of the FPL, provide access to affordable health care insurance for millions of self-employed, under-employed and those not yet eligible for Medicare. These people are all hard-working, taxpayers, who because of employment choices or lack of employment opportunities, do not have access to an employer-sponsored plan.

Eliminating these subsidies will make health care insurance unaffordable for millions of people.

Another effect, which is less talked about, is the various protections the ACA provided. These protections ensure that health care policies meet certain basic coverage requirements. These basic requirements are coverage of prescriptions, annual checkups, pre-existing conditions, diagnostic tests, emergency room visits, and many others. These protections ensured that policy holders were covered for the most basic of health care services in the event of an unforeseeable health event.

Before passage of the ACA it was very common to have common procedures not covered. It was not uncommon to have an emergency room visit that was not covered by insurance, forc-

ing you to pay hundreds or even thousands of dollars. It was not uncommon to have coverage rescinded because of a diagnosis of a catastrophic illness such as cancer or diabetes, in fact, insurance companies had whole departments dedicated to that process.

Repeal of the ACA will be catastrophic for millions of Americans. It will not make access to health care more affordable and accessible, it will decrease access and increase costs, both short-term and long-term. I recommend every one contact their members of congress and urge them to not support a repeal of the ACA without an acceptable replacement.

Three secrets To the Editor, The Catholic church has sinned against the secrets of Fatima and the consecration of Russia to Mary’s Immaculate Heart. It has been 100 years since Lucia, one of the seers of Fatima, gave the church these secrets.

The first secret was the vision of Hell. And little Jacinta (after seeing Hell) would repeat what Our Lady told her to say at only 7 years old, “Oh my Jesus. Forgive us our sins.

The second secret was World War I would end, and a new and greater World War (World War ll) would begin when you see a night illuminated by an unknown light. Our Lady even stated the war would begin in the reign of Pius XI. Pius the Xi became Pope in 1922, five years after 1917 when Our Lady told Lucia these statements. Our Lady knew who was going to become the Pope, when World War ll would begin and even gave what his name would be. And

Follow the money To the Editor, NAFTA is on the table. Monday, July 17, the Trump Administration disclosed its plans to the public. Trump didn’t want to. Trump had to disclose his “key negotiating points.”

Roach wins summer golf league’s A Flight SENICA — Ian Roach of Putnam County High School won the A Flight in the inaugural Illinois Valley High School Summer Golf League.

He birdied the final hole to capture the title by one stroke over Nathan Rodriguez of LaSalle-Peru High School.

John Potthoff of St. Bede won a threeway sudden death playoff for third place.

The six-week summer league consisted of 30 area high school golfers, all competing as individuals rather than a team competition.

Golfers played six nine-hole round at six different courses, including Edgewood Park, Pine Hills, Mendota, Spring Creek, Senica’s Deer Park and Senica’s Oak Ridge.

Each golfer’s best four scores out of six

rounds were counted.

“This is a great way for high school golfers to get as good dose of competitive exposure in a low-pressure atmosphere,” said league-creator and director Mason Kimberley, head golf coach at Hall High School. “All the kids had a lot of fun being able to compete against other players that were purely local, and if this league has shown us anything, it’s that there are a lot of talented players in our area.”

Agricultural Museum open house is Aug. 13 HENNEPIN — The annual Agricultural Museum open house of the Putnam County Historical Society will be from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 13, at 501 Old Highway 26, Hennepin.

Local collectors will be displaying antique tractors and vehicles as usual.

The permanent displays are agricultural equipment and tools, wildlife, coal mining and military memorabilia, early 1900s general store, post office, one-room school and farm kitchen.

The Putnam County FFA Alumni will be holding a tractor drive before the open house to raise funds for the Bill Biagi Memorial FFA Alumni Scholarship. Registration for the tractor drive will begin at 9 a.m. at the Ag Museum. The tractors will depart at 10 a.m. and return at 12:30 p.m. for lunch. The cost of the drive is $40 per tractor.

PADS brings homeless message home

GRANVILLE — Putnam County Rotarians gained eye-opening insight into the plight of the homeless, during a program hosted by Rotarian Scott Shore and presented by PADS outreach assistant Jacqueline Smith at the club’s July 27 meeting.

Last year alone, PADS facilities in Peru and Ottawa provided a total of 11,391 shelter nights, served 28,785 meals, and provided services ranging from health and dental care, to life skills, substance abuse counselling, job and housing placement services to a total of 357 clients – including a record number of 75 homeless children.

Surprisingly, 90 percent of those served are local residents. Many, she said, have jobs but do not earn enough to cover rent and expenses.

The request for services has risen dramatically in each of the last two years. PADS shelters are open from September through May, from 5 to 9 p.m. nightly.

The non-profit organization, founded 26 years ago, serves Marshall, Putnam and LaSalle counties.

It is primarily funded by donations, and the revenue generated by the sale of donated items through “Lilly Pads,” the second-hand store in Peru operated by PADS volunteers.

Only 6 percent of its funding is reliant on state grants. For the future, she said, PADS facilities hope to

Dr. Piacenti is retiring after 37 years of medical practice in the Illinois Valley. During his career, he became well-known locally as an advocate of mammography as a mean of detecting breast cancer in women in its early stages. He and his physician group, Hospital Radiology Services, work at St. Margaret’s Hospital in Spring Valley, where he joined the medical staff in 1980; Illinois Valley Community Hospital in Peru, where he joined the medical staff in 1993; and at OSF Saint Paul Medical Center in Mendota. Ag business management program approved OGLESBY — “A very big step forward for our agriculture program” is how IVCC President Jerry Corcoran described the notice just received from the Illinois Community College Board (ICCB) and the Illinois Board of Higher Education certifying IVCC’s new Associate of Applied Science (AAS) Degree in Agricultural Business Management.

The two-year, 60-credit hour program beginning this fall will prepare students for immediate employment in the region’s steadily expanding agri-business sector.

“This program will provide students pursuing agriculture careers the knowledge they need to quickly get a good job,” said Corcoran. “Agricul-

tural Business Management has a robust internship which often leads directly to a new job.”

Wrestling for a cause

STREATOR — Rebellious Wrestling Federation head Sean Hubbard recently presented United Way of Eastern LaSalle County a donation of $300 to aid the tornado relief fund of Ottawa and Naplate. This was raised during the RWF’s June event “Wrestle Wars 2” which was held at the Streator Family YMCA. The RWF’s next event, “Wrestle Wars 3” will be held Sept. 16 at the Bureau County Fairgrounds in Princeton.

Wrestle Wars are a series of regularly held professional wrestling events held throughout the Illinois Valley area, and each event is run to aid a different cause.

The premier event held in December aided the Wounded Warrior Project. Wrestle Wars 3 will benefit Piper Stapleton, the daughter of Kristina Norris, formerly of Princeton, whose parents still live in the area. Piper suffers from a disease known as microcephaly which causes her head to be smaller than normal, leading to developmental disabilities and other health issues.

PRINCETON — Local artist Bart Kassabaum will give a presentation and sign copies of his new book, “Becoming Richard Widmark,” at 6:30 p.m.

Tuesday, Aug. 8, at the Princeton Public Library.

Complete with original illustrations by Kassabaum, “Becoming Richard Widmark” is a biography of the life of a film actor who spent his early formative years in Princeton.

Widmark attended grade school and high school in Princeton, graduating in 1932 as senior class president. Four years at Lake Forest College, and a radio and theater career in New York, was followed by his sensational film debut in “Kiss

of Death” in 1947. His acting technique takes fans from one side of the fence to the other throughout his 72-movie career.

“Writing ‘Becoming Richard Widmark’ began with a visit from a friend, Jim Dunn,” Kassabaum said. “He encouraged me to create some art to honor the film actor.”

When he began researching Widmark, however, it became clear that he should consider writing about him as well.

Talking points during the Aug. 8 program will include: the author’s experience researching, writing and publishing the book; creating art for the prints; and how he got into Richard Widmark.
