Delivery of DNA evidence might result in murder charge

Prosecutor says additional charge likely before Aug. 30

BY DAVE COOK dcook@bcrnews.com HENNEPIN — Public defender Roger Bolin announced during a Putnam County Court hearing July 26 that suspect Richard A. Henderson is partially waiving his right to a speedy trial regarding the charges of concealment of a homicidal death.

Henderson, 26, is charged with the Class 3 felony and is being held on a $1 million bond. He’s the Standard man whom investigators believe killed 16-year-old Diamond Bradley, of Spring Valley, 6 months ago and left her body along a rural Putnam County road.

Bolin stipulated the agreement was only for the period of Aug. 6 to Oct. 1, when Henderson’s trial is scheduled to begin. He’s previously argued the state has exceeded the Diamond 120-day limit of the Bradley Speedy Trial Act, and his motion to dismiss the charges will be decided by Judge Stephen A. Kouri at a hearing at 2:30 p.m. Aug. 30.

Bolin has previously stated his client has been in custody since Feb. 5. Putnam County State’s Attorney Christina Judd-Mennie has argued the past three continuances were agreed upon by both sides at previous hearings and that by doing so, the 120-day count would have stopped during those periods.

Following the hearing, however, Judd-Mennie reported the state has received the DNA results from several items gathered and tested after the first round of crime scene investigation. Judd-Mennie said the results still need to be examined, but added that if they show what she’s expecting, new charges will likely be filed prior to Aug. 30.

According to Judd-Mennie, the motion for a dismissal of charges has caused understandable concern within the community.

“He’s not walking out of the jail,” Mennie said.

Bolin said he had some additional concerns about the comChristina Judd-Mennie position and other aspects of the grand Putnam County state’s jury, and those issues will also be ruled on attorney during the Aug. 30 hearing.

During the ongoing investigation, the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office developed information that Henderson might have discarded a weapon at Color Point, the commercial greenhouse in rural Granville where he had been employed.

On April 11, the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office was assisted in a search by Tri-DENT, Illinois State Police Crime Scene Services, the Spring Valley Police Department and the LaSalle County Sheriff’s Office.

The recovered weapon, a knife, is

being analyzed at the Illinois State Police Crime Scene Services laboratory, and both sides should continue to receive new evidence until the trial.

“This case is a priority for the crime lab,” Judd-Mennie said.

Bradley was last was seen on Jan. 23, and she was reported missing the following morning. Her body, stabbed multiple times, was found Jan. 27.

According to Putnam County Sheriff Kevin Doyle, investigators think Henderson and Bradley met online and that Henderson picked the teen up near her Spring Valley home between 6:30 and 7:30 a.m. on Jan. 24. Investigators believe Henderson then drove to the spot where her body was found and killed her.

Henderson was arrested after being interviewed at the police station. Tips, interviews, surveillance cameras and pings from Bradley’s cellphone link him to her death, Doyle has said.

BPART riders would like weekend service Multicounty public transit meeting shares successes, concerns

BY DAVE COOK news@putnamcountyrecord.com PRINCETON — Providing weekend service was shown to be a popular request from riders during the recent meeting of regional public transportation officials held Friday in Princeton.

Representatives from Bureau, Putnam, LaSalle, DeKalb, Grundy, Kendall, Lee and Ogle counties shared new developments within their areas, as well as training, common concerns and vehicle issues.

Privacy issues were also discussed regarding the need to communicate with riders to provide for their safety and welfare during both the ride and their transition to other caregivers.

Princeton resident Steve Dorfman said he moved to the area about six years ago and described himself as “a very happy rider” of the Bureau-Putnam Area Rural Transit (BPART) system.

His single request was for weekend service, even if it was just once a month.

“It gives me the freedom to get out and around; it’s just wonderful,” he said, adding the people of BPART and the Bureau County Senior Center

The representatives then shared the new developments in their areas. BPART Director Mick Johnson reported they’ll soon be making

the move into their new facility and that tours would be available.

With a major move underway and a declaration that it was currently a low priority, Johnson did mention

that BPART “may or may not be able to offer weekend service” in the near future.

• BPART The DeKalb County representative announced his agency is adding weekend services for its residents.

Alaina Rivers, deputy city clerk of Ottawa, represented LaSalle County and reported they are continuing to work with the state to get grant approval for a new building and that the final decision should be known

by September.

Rayanne Sestert, director of the Mendota Area Senior Services, announced they’re hoping to see an increase in riders with the Oct. 1 addition of a Monday-Friday congregate meal service, which will be held

at the Mendota Civic Center. The meal time has yet to be determined.

Putnam County Community Center (PCCC) Director Michelle Halm said there had been no new developments, but did share why public transportation services are vital, especially for rural residents.

“It’s a much-needed service that provides freedom and Independence for anyone who needs it,” she said.

GRANVILLE — Kenneth B. “Buzzy” Bishop, 83, of Granville passed away Saturday, July 28, 2018, at OSF St. Francis Medical Center in Peoria.

Buzzy was born July 12, 1935, in Spring Valley to Ivan and Mildred (Seibert) Bishop. He married Mary Barb Cass on Nov. 23, 1963, in LaSalle and the wedding was blessed in Spring Valley Catholic Church.

He served in the U.S. Marine Corps at the end of the Korean War. When he returned home, he worked as a redi-mix driver for Western Sand and Gravel Company in Spring Valley.

Buzzy was secretary-treasurer and business agent of Teamsters Local Union No. 722, LaSalle, from 1974 to 1992. He served on various boards and committees of the Illinois Conference of Teamsters in Springfield; Central Conference of Teamsters in Chicago; and the International Brotherhood of Teamsters in Washington, D.C., specializing in the cement and tank truck divisions.

He was a member of, and active in, the Illinois Valley Building Trades Council in Ottawa.

Because of his dedication to organized labor, he earned the respect of area union tradesmen.

He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Granville and the Granville VFW. Buzzy enjoyed fishing with his friends and the trips they took.

Surviving is his wife, Mary Barb Bishop of Granville, and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by their daughter, Brenda, in 1986; and one brother, Clair “Mutts” Bishop.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 4, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Granville with Father Patrick DeMeulemeester officiating.

Cremation rites will follow the service. Burial, with full military honors, will be at a later date in Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will be prior to the service, from 10 to 11 a.m., at the church.

Contributions may be made to his family.

She was blessed with five grandchildren, Timothy, Jerimy, Lily Anne, Miciah and Sawyer; two great-granddaughters, Angel and Finley; and one great-grandson, Harrison.

Dianne was reunited with the Lord and her loved ones on July 23, 2018.

The song fest in her honor will be held at on Sunday, Aug. 5, at 2 p.m. at Willow Springs Mennonite Church, Tiskilwa, with a meal to follow.

A 16-year-old female from Standard lost control of her vehicle and entered a cornfield. Lostant EMS was dispatched to the scene, and there were no injuries or citations.

Warrant arrest • At 8:18 a.m. on July 17, deputies responded to an unrelated call at 473 Route 351. Troy Lanham, 38 was arrested on a Putnam County warrant for failure to appear on a charge of no driver’s license. Lanham was

transported to the LaSalle County Jail, and bond was set at $1,000 with 10 percent to apply.

PUTNAM COUNTY SHERIFF DUI • At 5 a.m. on July 22, a Putnam County deputy sheriff arrested and charged Kyle K. Schrowang, 34, of Granville with improper lane usage, driving under the influence of alcohol, and DUI of .08 or more following a traffic stop on Old Route 26 in Hennepin. Schrowang was released with notice to appear and was given a Putnam County court date.

Harness racing action at the Marshall-Putnam Fair

PERU

Illinois Valley Community Hospital has been awarded a three-year term of accreditation in mammography as the result of a recent review by the American College of Radiology (ACR).

Mammography is a specific type of imaging test that uses a low-dose X-ray system to examine breasts. Mammograms are used to aid in the early detection and diagnosis of breast cancer in women.

The ACR gold seal of accreditation represents the highest level of image quality and patient safety. It is awarded only to hospitals and other facilities meeting ACR Practice Parameters and Technical Standards after a peer-review evaluation by board-certified physicians and medical physicists who are experts in the field.

The evaluators take a look at image quality, personnel qualifications, adequacy of facility equipment, and quality control procedures and quality assurance.

The findings are reported to the ACR Committee on Accreditation, which subsequently provides hospitals with comprehensive reports that can be used for continuous practice improvement.

The ACR, founded in 1924, is a professional medical society dedicated to serving patients and society members by empowering radiology professionals to advance the practice, science and professions of radiological care.

EDGEWOOD PARK GOLF CLUB

50 years of great golf par for the course For half a century, club has attracted golfers from throughout the region

BY DAVE COOK news@putnamcountyrecord.com MCNABB — Founded in 1968, the course at Edgewood Park Golf Club has since become a destination for golfers from throughout the region.

Starting with nine holes and no water hazards, the popular links were reconfigured in 1995 by wellknown designer Jim Spears into a full 18-hole, 6,600-yard regulation course with a variety of challenges and a rating of 71.7. The course’s signature hole is No. 14, a 513-yard par five.

“I’ve been coming here for five years and really enjoy the course, the friendly people and the great layout,” Don Goebel, of Henry said.

Privately owned, Edgewood Park has approximately 220 members and is open to the public. Members also enjoy reciprocal benefits with several other area courses, and tee times can be scheduled through the popular website GolfNow. Board members said joining GolfNow has increased interest in the course and has helped expand knowledge of Edgewood Park beyond the local area.

The links are the home turf of the Putnam County and Henry-Senachwine high school golf teams, and both the district and sectional high school tournaments are hosted by Edgewood Park, as well. The Putnam County team has qualified for the state competition for the past two years.

Additionally, they’ve also hosted both the Illinois Valley Women’s and Men’s Invitational Tournaments, as well as being the home of the PC Booster Club Tournament and other fundraisers.

To help nurture new interest in the game, Edgewood has recently held a three-day Kids Camp for 31 children, in grades 1-8, which taught them the important fundamentals of the game and the associated etiquette.

Edgewood Park golfers can hone their short game on the practice green, make use of a chipping area, and can also practice their swing with the newly added driving range, complete with targets and ball rental.

Par has recently been increased from 72 to 73 (36 on the front nine and 37 on the back) because of a change to the 13th hole.

The new shoot will be a nightmare for any duffers who struggle to keep their ball straight and true. With a narrow window to the fairway and bordered heavily by trees, shots must travel above multiple sections of a winding creek and a steeply graded rough, which will undoubtedly be consuming a lot of balls.

For the 19th hole, the clubhouse offers sandwiches, a bar and a pro shop. A supper club adjacent to the clubhouse is unfortunately no longer open, but Casford was hopeful a new owner will reopen it eventually.

Board members said while the course has many local golfers, it also regularly attracts players and members from Peoria, Henry, Ottawa, Streator, Tonica, Princeton, LaSalle-Peru and the rest of the Illinois Valley region.

Dale and Cathy Myers, of Streator said they loved the course from the first round they played at Edgewood Park, and added they became members as soon as there was an opening five years ago.

“We like that it’s 18 holes and that it’s a nice course. It’s the best in the

area, and everyone is so friendly here,” Cathy said.

We will be holding a tractor drive in conjunction with the Putnam County Ag Museum on Sunday, August 12th.

Registration will begin at 8:30 a.m., and the tractors will depart the Putnam County Ag Museum in Hennepin, at 9:30 a.m. We will be exploring the countryside of Putnam County for the morning with a 12:30 p.m return. Lunch is provided for all drivers who participate in the event.

The Putnam County Ag Museum will be open from 11:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.

Don’t steal from young Peter to pay old Paul In health care area, oldsters use a large chunk of the system

A

s I near 77, I find myself on a treadmill, you might say, of visits to doctors, specialists, clinics, hospitals. Ditto for many contemporaries I hang with. I worry that our society can’t afford all the health care that we oldsters enjoy.

In just the past few years, I have had procedures or operations for Lasik, cataracts, hernia repair, depression, prostate cancer, arrythmia, and more, plus many medications and endless checkups.

I have no idea what all that costs, because we are shielded from the numbers. I did read that the new-fangled proton beam radiation treatments for my prostate cancer cost $100,000, several times the cost of traditional radiation for prostate cancer.

But Medicare covered the treatments, and I was told there wouldn’t likely be any important side effects (there were), so who cares?

UNDERSTANDING ILLINOIS Jim Nowlan As a result, I am in relatively good health, and thankful. Yet still I worry that we are robbing Peter to pay Paul for all this.

Some background. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services reports that 5 percent of the population consumes half the costs of health care. This nickel slice isn’t all for oldsters, but much of it is.

One of five dollars in our economy goes to health care. Health care costs have been rising faster than economic growth since about the end of World War II. PWC (the former Price, Waterhouse, Coopers) is a national accounting firm that follows this industry. PWC notes that health care costs are expected to grow 6 percent next year (which is lower than the 9 percent to 12 percent annual growth of recent years), while the economy putters along at 2 percent growth or so each year. Unsustainable.

What careers do you encourage your children and grandchildren to pursue? Health care is near the top of the list, I’ll guess, because it’s a growth industry, pay is good, and security seems assured.

At the same time, we are spending less on children, higher education and infrastructure, all critical to our future, while the Chinese pour massive dollars into all these fields.

From 1978 to 2014 (the last year Illinois had a real budget), spending by our state for higher education, in inflation-adjusted 2014 dollars, declined from $283 per capita to $189.

In contrast, that for Medicaid (health care for the low-income, disabled and those in nursing homes) quadrupled, to almost $1,300 per capita!

Spending for our state children’s agency is also down, and Illinois hasn’t had a real infrastructure program for our highways since 2010.

I am not, of course, proposing that we cut off all health care to oldsters.

Those in our “golden years” deserve to reap some benefits from all we contributed earlier.

And yet, we cannot steal from the most productive elements of our

society to pay for inexhaustible health care.

What to do? We could, as most developed nations do, ration health care. We prefer to think we do not have to do this, although we do informally ration a great deal – poor people receive lots less of the best health care than rich people.

I propose that, at the least, the U.S. and our states develop annual spreadsheets, maybe titled “How’re we doin’?” The spreadsheets would tabulate expenditures, and ideally outcomes, for each of the major functions of society: education, children, colleges, basic research, infrastructure, and health care (this last maybe broken out by age categories, that is, young, working age, senior).

That way, if we spend ever more on health care for oldsters like me, we can see that. But we should ring alarm bells if the breakout shows we are investing less on the more productive functions in order to do so.

Tears show that a reporter truly understands S

ANTA FE, Texas – Last week, a mother looked me in the eye and explained how a gunman entered her son’s high school classroom and shot him dead along with nine others in a school shooting.

I came to this Texas coastal community to gather information about the May 19 school shooting and produce a podcast examining the causes and effects of such violence and to determine how to better protect our children.

But as that mother shared her loss to me, I was overwhelmed, unable to fully remember what I wanted to say to her. Tears welled in my eyes, my voice cracked, and I try as I might, I couldn’t form a sentence.

My younger self would have been ashamed.

In college, my journalism professors intoned that a journalist must be emotionally removed from a story. They saw us as dispassionate observers, transcribing our observations, but never betraying our feelings to any passersby.

In the testosterone-filled newsrooms, where I spent my youth, a crying reporter would have been the subject of much derision. After

Newsrooms can be strange places. In those days, other emotions such as anger were quite acceptable. It wasn’t uncommon to see a reporter or editor hollering at each other. But, crying? No, that was crossing a line.

For me, my emotional kryptonite is children.

My three daughters have given me a level of empathy I just can’t hide. When I hear of a child who has been subjected to violence, I think of my love for my own girls, and waves of grief follow.

In retrospect, the stoic journalist was never a good thing. It was something the profession was never asked to impose on itself by those outside of it.

For example, I once asked my mother what she remembered about President Kennedy’s assassination. She told me this story, “I

was watching ‘As the World Turns’ when a bulletin came across that the president had been shot. Walter Cronkite appeared on the screen crying. He said President Kennedy was dead.”

She didn’t speak of Cronkite’s tears as a bad thing.

For her, his emotion underscored

the gravity of the event.

Last week, when I became teary eyed, the mother’s face softened toward me. She knew I understood.

And at the end of the day, understanding is what journalism should be all about.

HENNEPIN — The annual Agricultural Museum open house of the Putnam County Historical Society will be from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday Aug. 12, at 501 Old Highway 26 in Hennepin.

Everyone is invited to attend to view the changes made to the Ag Museum and the Meeting House with support from the Walter Durley Boyle Charitable Trust. The permanent displays are agricultural equipment and tools, wildlife, coal mining, early 1900s general store, post office, oneroom school and farm kitchen. Military memorabilia have been moved to the Meeting House.

The Putnam County FFA Alumni will hold a tractor drive before the open house to raise funds for the Bill Biagi Memorial FFA Alumni Scholarship. Registration for the tractor drive will begin at 8:30 a.m. at the Ag Museum. The tractors will depart at 9:30 a.m. and return at 12:30 p.m. for lunch. The cost of the drive is $40 per tractor. Annual Henry Summer Festival set River Valley Players announce

HENRY — The eighth annual Henry Summer Festival will be from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 11, at Central Park in Henry.

This year there will be more than 80 vendors with a large variety of booths ranging from fruits and vegetables, homemade wood items, crafts, antiques, bake sales, health and wellness products, and everything else you can think of.

If your not in the mood to shop, stop by Central Park for lunch. A variety of items will be available. If your in the mood for pizza, stop by and visit The Backyard Party Guys.

Castaways will be serving burgers, walking tacos, chili cheese dogs and Italian beef, as well as salads, sides and drinks. The Meeting Place will be serving pulled pork, sandwiches, pork chops, brats and hot dogs. The

Webb food stand will have corn dogs, funnel cakes and lemon shake ups. Thompson Family Vending will have cotton candy, snow cones, deep fried s’mores, ice cream and homemade waffle cones.

On the entertainment side of things, there are a few new entertainers this year. Returning to the stage will be Daniel Watkins from 9 to 10 a.m.; The Lizzi & Dave Neal Acoustic Duo will perform from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.; Dance Central will perform from 12:45 to 1:15 p.m.; and Tyler Duckworth will entertain from 1:30 to 3 p.m.

Not only will there be entertainment on stage, but from 10 a.m. to noon you will find The Unique Twist creating balloon characters of your choice in the center of the park.

‘A Christmas Story’ auditions

HENRY — Auditions for River Valley Players’ “A Christmas Story the Musical” will be held Wednesday, Aug. 1, and Thursday, Aug. 2, at St. John’s Community Center, 1301 Second St. in Henry. Those auditioning should arrive 15 minutes prior to audition time to complete paper work.

Auditions for children ages 8 and up will be from 6 to 7 p.m. All children will be required to complete a tap audition (not necessary to have tap shoes to audition).

Adult roles and youth 14 and up will be at 7:30 p.m. Only adult

females who wish to be considered for the role of Miss Shields (the teacher) will to do a tap audition. All adults will do a dance/ movement audition. Auditioners should arrive prepared to sing 32 bars of music (can be from this show or one of your choosing) and bring their own sheet music; an accompanist will be provided. Wear comfortable clothing, including footwear suitable for dance movement.

Author Fair set for Sept. 22 PRINCETON — Applications are now being accepted from local authors who wish to participate in the Author Fair at the Princeton Public Library on Saturday, Sept. 22.

The last two years, more than 30 authors attended to sell their books and meet readers.

Applications can be received by emailing landerson@princetonpl. org or can be picked up at the Princeton Public Library, 698 E Peru St.

in Princeton.

There is no charge to participate, but authors must reserve their spot by filling out an application.

The application deadline is Aug. 25.

Table space (approximately 3 feet wide) and chairs will be provided.

Authors will be responsible for their own cash-boxes and set up. Set-up time begins at 9:30 a.m. with the doors open to the public at 10 a.m.

Baker named scholarship recipient GRANVILLE — The Granville National Bank, trustee for the Erna A Moews Educational Trust, has been notified of the winner for the trust’s 2018-19 scholarship. This year’s scholarship winner is Jeffrey Baker, the son of Leland and Juli Baker of Granville.

The recipient is chosen on the consideration of scholarship and community service activities. One must be a resident of Granville Township and meet other criteria set up under the Erna Moews will. The recipient will receive $800 for the 2018-19 academic year. The applicant is chosen by a committee which consists of the local school district superintendent and one other school administrator.

The committee shall make awards to those students who are enrolled in the College of Architecture or the College of Fine Arts, or any college in which the applicant will be working toward a degree with a major in any science, mathematics or computer degree.

Coca-Cola collectibles on display at Prairie Arts Center PRINCETON — “Delicious, Refreshing, Invigorating, Exhilarating!” that was the message proclaimed in the first advertising for the world’s most popular and famous soft drink, Coca-Cola. This advertisement appeared in Atlanta, Georgia’s “Atlantic Daily Journal” on Saturday, May 29, 1886, just three weeks after the soft drink was introduced in Jacob’s Pharmacy, also in Atlanta.

In the 132 years since then, thousands of companies have produced millions of creations “hyping” the product Coca-Cola.

Princeton’s Dick Volker was in sales management with the company for more than 40 years. Quite a variety of advertising passed through his hands, some of which he has collected and maintained in his home. Loretta, Dick’s wife, has especially focused on collecting

advertising related to the fountain Coca-Cola, the division with which Volker was associated. Loretta has made her kitchen into a mini-museum starting with a kitchen soffit packed full of Coke advertising pieces. Extending around the walls are metal serving trays, toy trucks and cars placed in slots in Coca-Cola bottle cases, plus a very large framed puzzle. There is a full-sized policeman crossing guard standing in one corner, going back to the days when Coke bottlers gave the metal signs to schools.

The Volkers will be exhibiting Coke-related memorabilia at the Prairie Arts Center, 24 E. Park Ave. in Princeton. The opening night reception will be from 6 to 8 p.m.

Friday, Aug. 3. Dick and Loretta will share stories about the history of Coca-Cola and their collection.

Talk about the first day as it approaches. A child’s first day of school is a milestone, and parents may do various things to commemorate the occasion. The excitement leading up to the first day can spark kids’ enthusiasm, but it also may lead to some anxiety about the unknown. Parents can quell those fears by discussing the first day as it approaches. Explain why the first day is so special, encouraging youngsters to share their feelings. If kids express fears about their first day, parents can explain they felt similarly on their first day of school but quickly adjusted.

Let kids choose their own clothes. Parents may be tempted to buy special outfits for their children for the first day of school. But kids who are jittery about their first day may calm down if allowed to choose their own

Summer vacations typically lack the structure of the school year, and it might be unfair to expect kids to seamlessly slip back into their more regimented lives as students.

While some early school year sluggishness might be normal, that should wear off pretty quickly. If not, and students appear to be struggling to get motivated for their schoolwork, parents can try various strategies that should help reignite youngsters’ passions for learning.

Make your home more school-friendly.

Summer is a relaxing time of year when parents have a tendency to relax rules around the house. But come the school year, parents must make sure their homes are as conducive to studying as possible. Resist the urge to turn the television on each night so students are not distracted from their studies. Keep the home quiet so students are motivated to focus on their studies.

Encourage participation in extracurricular activities. Various studies have examined the relationship between extracurricular activities and academic performance. A 2002 study published in the journal Sociology of Education found that participation in extracurricular activities is associated with improved grade point average, increased college attendance and reduced absenteeism. Calm the chaos on busy school mornings M ornings can test the patience and stamina of busy families as adults and children hurry to get out the door on time. Starting off the morning already stressed can lead to feeling tense throughout the rest of the day.

There is no magic formula to make mornings less hectic, but the following are some ways families can streamline their morning routines.

Make use of the night before. Morning madness may come about due to lack of preparation the previous night. The more that can be done the night before, the less there will be to do on weekday mornings. Encourage children to lay out clothes for the next day and take a shower or bath that evening. Make lunches the night before a school day, and gather all supplies from homework stations, restocking backpacks and gym bags so everything is ready to go come the morning.

Get to bed earlier. Sleep experts say that if you need to rely on an alarm clock to get up in the morning, you may not be getting enough sleep. The National Sleep Foundation says school-aged children should get between nine and 11 hours of sleep a night. Teenagers require between eight and 10 hours of sleep per night, while adults need between seven and nine hours. A good night’s rest can reduce

morning crankiness and get everyone moving more efficiently.

Incentivize timeliness for kids. Children who are reluctant to head to school may need extra motivation to get out the door. Offer small rewards to kids when they get ready on their own or finish breakfast in a certain amount of time. Follow a schedule. Make mornings the same each day so everyone knows what to expect.

Stay organized. Racing around trying to find keys or jackets can be very stressful. Make it a point to return items to their proper places so that everyone knows where to look for the items they need.

ollege is often met with excitement and interest by students pursuing their passions and what they hope will be fulfilling, lucrative careers.

And the rising costs of college, coupled with the growing number of students taking on substantial debt to finance their educations, make it necessary that prospective students consider their earning potential when deciding on a major.

According to the College Board, the average cost of college tuition and fees for the 2017-2018 school year was $34,740 at private colleges, $9,970 for state residents at public colleges, and $25,620 for out-ofstate residents attending public universities. Canadian citizens studying in Canada can expect to pay $6,571 per year, according to Statistics Canada. The cost of tuition and room and board may catch parents’ eyes, but there are some lesser known expenses associated with college that can make attending school even more expensive. According to Cappex.com, a website offering ideas on how to pay for college, the extra costs of college can cost between $250 and $500 per month.

The following are some lesser known expenses that college students and their families may need to budget for this school year.

Transportation: Commuter students will need to drive to and from campus, which involves budgeting for gas, repairs and auto insurance. Students who live on

campus may be subjected to a high fee for a resident student parking pass. Colleges in the United States earn an average of $4 million to $5 million in parking revenues each year, according to the most recent rate study from the National Parking Association. A typical four-year college or university in the United States charges about $635 per space for the school year.

Other students use public transportation or ridesharing services to get around. Those fees can quickly add up, too. Students attending school far away from home also need to budget for plane tickets home during the holidays and other breaks.

Fraternities and sororities: Many students join Greek organizations to fully immerse themselves in the college experience and make new friends. Many of these groups charge fees to prospective pledges and then semester dues once students are accepted.

Parties, trips, living expenses, and other expenses may come up as well.

Added fees: Many colleges and universities charge technology fees, sports center fees and activity fees.

Arukah Institute of Healing holds inaugural color run PRINCETON — The Arukah Institute of Healing hosted its inaugural Freedom 5k Color Run on July 4.

More than 150 people participated in the event, which was a first of its kind for the holiday in Princeton.

Participants came dressed in festive attire, some wearing red, white and blue, while others wore shirts made that honored their active-duty heroes serving overseas.

The morning began with veterans participating in the color guard and squirting the first shots of color out

of water guns onto the large Freedom sign. It was a moving tribute to those that have served and that are serving.

Not only did Arukah want to celebrate the freedom we have here in the United States, but they wanted to encourage and celebrate freedom from mental health issues.

The Arukah Institute of Healing’s mission is bringing accessible and relational holistic mental health care to communities with a vision of restored hope and purpose in com-

munities.

The Arukah Institute of Healing addresses the epidemic of emotional woundedness afflicting communities today.

They are a new culture of holistic mental health care that uses a variety of group-based mind-body-soul approaches to journey with clients long-term toward psychological restoration.

Arukah’s services revolve around building healthy relationships; they believe that as individuals are often

injured in relationship, they are also healed in relationship.

Their method is grounded in data-driven strategies that assess needs of communities and track the healing of their clients.

Working with 30 other Team Illinois representatives, Ivan Baker represented North Central Illinois in promoting new foreign direct investment at the recent SelectUSA Summit in Washington, D.C. North Central Illinois is a primary Team Illinois sponsor of the Intersect

Illinois promotional program at Select USA. This year, Baker met with corporate executives from Turkey, Indonesia, South Korea, Mexico, Taiwan, Colombia, Israel, Italy, Japan and Ivan France. Team Illinois Baker personally coordinated personal meetings with more than 100 executives from throughout the world.

This fifth annual SelectUSA Invest-

ment Summit is the highest-profile event dedicated to promoting foreign direct investment (FDI) in the United States, and is sponsored by the U.S. Department of Commerce.

More than 1,200 business representatives from 66 foreign markets met with economic developers from 51 states and U.S. territories.

Over the past 5 years, nearly $93 million in new investment projects, supporting 140,000 American jobs, have resulted from the initial meet-

ings at SelectUSA Summits.

“Select USA is an important promotional effort for us to encourage Foreign Direct Investment,” Baker said. “Importantly, we are meeting with executives who have projects, and want to make investments in the United States.”

The region already boasts the investment by 62 foreign-owned manufacturers, and Illinois is the fifth largest foreign direct investment state in the U.S.
